For over nine years, Miss Anima has exhibited this kind gesture to ease financial burdens on parents in the area.

The headmistress, who doubles as the Nkɔsoɔhemaa, in an interview with Adom News revealed she started to put her hidden talent into use in 2014.

From that period, she said she has shaved the hair of not less than 500 children, an act the community has been very appreciative of.

According to her, she observed most of the children come to school with bushy hair due to financial constraints on parents in the rural area.

Some of the children who have benefitted from the headmistress’ act admitted their parents are unable to provide GHS10 to shave their hair.

Despite mixed feelings, their headmistress could cut their hair, they took the risk to allow her and she proved them wrong.

The direction comes on the back of a demonstration embarked upon by the students over what they describe as neglect.

The students claim the deceased, having suffered from ulcer, was left unattended to for three hours over fears of COVID-19.

Free SHS: ‘Corrupt’ school heads luring students to their private hostels – Abronye reveals https://www.adomonline.com/free-shs-corrupt-school-heads-luring-students-private-hostels-abronye-reveals/ Thu, 14 Sep 2017 12:59:15 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=492691 School heads in various senior high schools are deliberately charging parents and referring students to their private hostels.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe who disclosed this has called on the board of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sit up and deal with some Heads of SHS Schools marketing students into their private hostels.

According to ‘Abronye DC’, as he is popularly known, the Free SHS program offers every student the right to boarding facilities hence could not fathom why some headmasters and mistresses are forcing parents to send wards to their private hostels.

“The headmasters and mistresses have built hostels around their schools. When students come they prevent them from going to boarding houses and refer them to hostels. How much money are they paid to build such hostels…?” Abronye DC queried on Accra based Neat FM.

“The Education Ministry must make it clear for students not to go to any hostel. It is the responsibility of the government to give them the boarding facilities. They know when the children stay in the school, their hostels will run at a loss…” he revealed.

He however stressed that the GES board should transfer any school head flouting their orders.

“We definitely have some people who will not follow the law. I have a Koforidua SHS receipt. The government has paid for the P.T.A fees. There are some schools also issuing receipts for house jerseys, textbooks among other things that the government has paid for…” he said.

“If you have such behaviour as a Head, how will the policy prosper…?” he quizzed.

Free SHS: Headmistress accused of charging fees denies allegation https://www.adomonline.com/free-shs-headmistress-accused-charging-fees-denies-allegation/ Thu, 14 Sep 2017 08:01:04 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=491921 The Headmistress of the University Practice Senior High School (UPSS) in Cape Coast, Central Region, has debunked claims by some parents that the school authorities are extorting money before students are granted admission.

Mrs. Paulina Yankah said she is surprised by the damaging allegation.

Mrs. Yankah was speaking Wednesday on Adom FM’s Burning Issues programme hosted by Afia Pokua.

Some parents claim Mrs. Yankah’s school has been requesting GH¢ 700 from each fresh student despite government’s directive that public secondary school heads should not take money from any student.

“I’m surprised that some parents are alleging that I’m extorting GH¢ 700 cedis each from them. I haven’t taken any money from any parent. God should forgive them” the headmistress laments.

Mrs. Yankah said she advised parents whose wards are outside the Central Region to see the owners of hostels to accommodate their children since her institution is a day school and hence has no boarding facilities.

She added the only semblance of boarding facilities her school has is a girl’s dormitory of that has 40 beds for 80 girls and a few beds for boys.

She reveals that these accommodation facilities, constructed by the PTA, are only for continuing students, and not meant for first-year students.

“I only told the parents that since the school is a day school interested parents can hire hostels around the school to accommodate their wards because we don’t have boarding facilities and I didn’t charge them to pay any fees to the school authorities” she stated.

“The Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) are only taking a voluntary GHC 5 cedis as PTA dues which are not compulsory” Mrs. Yankah clarifies.

She revealed that hostel owners close to the school are rather charging students from GHC 500 to GHC 700 cedis to provide them with accommodation but not the school.

On the school’s capacity to accommodate students been placed there, Mrs. Paulina Yankah said the school requested for only 400 students but the Computerized School Selection Placement System (CSSPS) have so far placed a total of 595 students.

She has described the situation as worrying because the school has very limited capacity.
