Gyakie shares how she handles social media criticism https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-shares-how-she-handles-social-media-criticism/ Tue, 27 May 2025 11:49:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2539038 Jacqueline Acheampong, known in music circles as Gyakie, has opened up about her new approach to dealing with social media comments about her craft and personality.

In a recent interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, she said that although she appreciates feedback, she is careful about the kind of advice she takes from people.

According to her, sometimes heeding counsel from critics can be very confusing, so she makes the final decision herself.

“I just learn to appreciate what I feel is right because one person will say, ‘I don’t like the way your hair is always shorter,’ another person will say, ‘I don’t like the way your hair is long.’ So it’s like, what do you want me to do? I am going to do what I feel is right or what I feel my audience is going to enjoy. Because whatever I put out is what is gathering the people that are in my market.

In the beginning, I was really allowing a lot of the bad criticism to get to me but right now I just drop the music and do exactly what I have been brought on earth to do,” she said.

When asked if she was active on social media, she responded, “Very active [but] I don’t want to read [comments] anymore. Right now I just drop it and go.”

She explained that this helps protect her mind from being affected by negative vibes.

“You know the mind is very tricky. You might think if I say anything I am not going to let it get to me but you might see one comment and your entire week will be ruined because you are a human being. You have feelings.”

However, she noted that she has not completely stopped reading comments but has stopped the habit of reading through comments on everything she puts out.

Gyakie names Omar Sterling as her all-time favourite Ghanaian rapper https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-names-omar-sterling-as-her-all-time-favourite-ghanaian-rapper/ Mon, 26 May 2025 09:10:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538481 Ghanaian Afro-fusion artiste Gyakie has named R2Bees member Paedae, also known as Omar Sterling, as her all-time favourite Ghanaian rapper.

In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Gyakie explained her choice.

“My favourite rapper in Ghana now is Omar Sterling of R2Bees. He’s always been. Yes, he’s my all-time favourite Ghanaian rapper.

Omar Sterling is a poet. I always say that his rap is always different. The storytelling—he shares stories about his life or things happening in real time, and the way he puts the lyrics together helps the listener understand what he is saying. That always makes me very happy. I think he’s a very good writer and storyteller,” she said.

While admitting she is not a rapper, Gyakie noted that she loves the genre and tries to fuse it into her musical works occasionally.

Gyakie further mentioned that her style of music is eclectic, influenced by a wide range of genres she grew up listening to.

She is currently out with a new song titled ‘Sankofa,’ ahead of her upcoming maiden album, ‘After Midnight.’

I wish I answered some questions differently in my early days interviews – Gyakie https://www.adomonline.com/i-wish-i-answered-some-questions-differently-in-my-early-days-interviews-gyakie/ Mon, 26 May 2025 09:01:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538474 Ghanaian Afro-fusion singer Gyakie has expressed regret over how she answered some interview questions early in her music career.

Reflecting on her early days, she admitted that some of her responses were childish and wished she had approached them differently.

“There were certain things I said in some interviews when I was 19-20 years old, when I first entered the industry, that I wish I had answered differently. At that age, that was how my brain was working, and I allowed myself to be who I was at that time,” she told Doreen Avio in an interview on Daybreak Hitz.

Gyakie also opened up about dealing with hate speech and negative comments.

“After ‘Forever’ dropped, I literally opened up and let the negative comments get to me. I used to read every single comment and even checked the person’s page to understand why they said such things. During that ‘Forever’ period, I was struggling in the studio, looking for the next song to drop that would match its success,” she said.

The singer revealed how she has since embraced self-motivation to overcome these challenges.

“Now, I post my music without reading comments or opening myself up to negativity. I had to speak to myself and just focus on making the music. If a song is meant to blow up, it will. As long as it’s good music, just drop it,” she added.

Gyakie breaks silence on manager’s altercation with security at AfroNation Portugal https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-breaks-silence-on-managers-altercation-with-security-at-afronation-portugal/ Fri, 23 May 2025 14:27:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537947 Ghanaian artiste Gyakie has opened up about the altercation involving her manager, Electro Mirror, and security personnel at the 2023 AfroNation festival in Portugal.

Speaking to Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, May 23, 2025, she described the incident as one she finds difficult to revisit due to the unpleasant memories it evokes.

“I really wish I was able to answer this particular question at the time, because it’s like anytime I have to talk about it, it kind of opens wounds that have already been healed,” she said.

She added, “What happened, and the fact that I actually had a performance on that day, is not something I would wish on anyone. I had to prepare for the stage, and I had to experience all that happened.”

The Forever hitmaker said the incident triggered a flurry of calls. “It made me see things differently,” she noted.

Gyakie further advised that the entertainment business comes with challenges, urging industry players to exercise more caution in how they navigate it.

In June 2023, a video that went viral on social media showed Gyakie’s manager, Electro Mirror, being manhandled by some uniformed security personnel, to the horror of onlookers.

The video, shared by George Britton, featured George’s panicked voice in the background as he reproached the security officers for their actions.

Mirror was seen pinned to the floor while about five security men held him in a chokehold as he gasped for air.

Meanwhile, Gyakie is preparing to release her debut album after previously dropping two EPs. She has already released the first single titled Sankofa, off the upcoming album After Midnight.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, he stressed that the musician did well with songs released in the year under review.

“I think Gyakie should have won the Female Vocalist of the Year. She did a lot of work last year, especially with the songs she featured the boy (North London’s rap riser JBEE) who is coming from the UK. She did well but she had nothing, why is that so?” he quizzed.

However, Gyakie was not nominated in that category. The slot was contested by Niiella, Titi Owusu, Adina, Abiana, Lordina The Soprano, and Queendalyn Yurglee who won the award.

According to the Telecel Ghana Music Awards’ category definition, the Best Female Vocal Performance is adjudged by the Academy and Boards as the Female artiste (solo) with the best vocal delivery/Performance on any musical presentation which was released during the year under review.

Wendy Shay’s epic response to Ghanaians comparing her to Gyakie https://www.adomonline.com/wendy-shays-epic-response-to-ghanaians-comparing-her-to-gyakie/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 13:18:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2279365 Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has addressed the ongoing comparisons between her and fellow artiste Gyakie in a recent statement.

In her epic response, she emphasised that it is unfair to compare two different talented artistes, and each of them should be appreciated for their own unique style and sound.

The comparisons between Wendy Shay and Gyakie have since been a subject of debate among music fans and critics in Ghana.

While both artistes have achieved significant success in the music industry, Ghanaians are of the opinion Gyakie is outshining Wendy Shay on the international front.

Reacting to this in an interview on TV3 monitored by Adomonline.com, Shay said they have distinct musical styles and approaches to their craft, hence there’s no need for comparison.

“It’s not fair to even compare. You know, I have been doing and giving hit back to back for five years so there shouldn’t be any comparison. I am an international artiste as well and I am working towards it to become a global artiste. The race is not for the swift; once you’re working hard and working on yourself, you are going to get wherever you put your mind to.”

She expressed her belief that every artiste should be allowed to shine and be celebrated for their individual talents.

The ‘Survivor’ hitmaker further stressed that comparisons can sometimes be discouraging for artistes and may hinder their creative growth. Instead, she called for unity among music lovers.

Why I did not accept Kalybos’ proposal – Gyakie clears air https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-did-not-accept-kalybos-proposal-gyakie-clears-air/ Fri, 20 Jan 2023 08:02:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2206697 Comic actor Kalybos was left heartbroken after his proposal to Ghanaian songstress, Gyakie was dropped in the dumpster.

Kaybos revealed publicly in a recent interview that he becomes lovestruck anytime he sees or hears the 24-year-old, adding that he would love to start a beautiful relationship with her.

Among other things, he stated that his feelings for Gyakie surpasses the 16 celebrity crushes he has in Ghana, and he would marry her if given the chance.

However, his proposal was turned down, and the reason, Gyakie has revealed is that she felt Kalybos was not serious about his assertions.

“I thought he was being jovial, I didn’t know he was serious,” she defended in an interview with Sammykaymedia.

According to her, they had spoken on multiple occasions but the discussion was always on a musical level, the reason she believes his proposal is one of his gimmicks.

Should Kalybos exhibit his seriousness, Gyakie revealed they would have further discussions off the cameras and see what would become of them.

Gyakie reveals one ritual she does before releasing her songs https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-reveals-one-ritual-she-does-before-releasing-her-songs/ Sat, 12 Nov 2022 16:42:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2182903 Ghanaian Afro-fusion singer, Jacqueline Acheampong, known professionally as Gyakie, has stunned her fans with her ritual ahead of her song releases.

With expectations having been met in the release of her EP “My Diary”, Gyakie said she and her team make sure to fast and pray before she outdoors any song.

The ‘Forever’ hitmaker added that every member of her team is very religious, and she is very grateful to God for that.

“One thing we don’t joke with is fasting and prayers to be very honest with you. Most of the songs that come out, we do fast and pray before we make it available on all streaming platforms for people to consume, and obviously, there’s a lot of groundwork that is done to push whatever song that is coming out,” she stated.

She is excited her fans have not been disappointed in the sound that came out and still feels they are not done consuming the music yet per the response from social media.

“I never saw myself to be this big if I was asked four or five years ago,” Gyakie told DJ Reuben in an interview on Luv FM’s Drive Time show in Kumasi.

“To be very honest I never had that confidence in myself, I didn’t know my voice was this unique. I had to get people to tell me,” she said.

The responses she got from her fans made her realize she needed to be confident in herself and that has enhanced her career growth.

There are times she cries, complains, feels tired and even wants to stop the music.

“I have a soft side and there have been times when everything just feels too much for you as a person. Immediately you come into the camera and show yourself to the world, people see you as a machine and don’t see you as a human with emotions so they just say things and don’t imagine how the person is going to feel about it,” Gyakie said.

Gyakie mentioned the Global Citizen Festival 2022 at the Black Star Square as the biggest platform she has mounted so far.

“I was nervous at the beginning but when I saw the people were excited to see me then I said to myself we are in for the fun, and it made me so happy till the end of my performance and the entire show,” she shared the experience.

The event was headlined by American R&B artistes Usher and SZA.

The ‘Live Experience with Gyakie’ concert is slated for this December, and she is also billed to perform at the Afronation and Afrochella concerts.

I was paid – Gyakie contradicts Global Citizen Festival ‘free-show’ claim https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-paid-gyakie-contradicts-global-citizen-festival-free-show-claim/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 13:00:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2166901 Ghanaian singer Gyakie has contradicted claims that musicians who performed at the recently-held Global Citizen Festival in Accra weren’t paid.

According to Gyakie, she was paid in full alongside everyone involved in her craft on that day.

On Monday, the CEO of Big Ideas Consult, a local partner of the recently-held Global Citizen Festival in Accra, Kojo Poku, disclosed that no act was paid to grace the stage of the Global Citizens Festival because it was a charity event.

However, Gyakie told 3FM on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, that the organisers met all monetary requirements needed for her to appear on the stage.

“Yes, everybody that was on the stage was obviously paid. The dancers, the choristers, the band. Everybody.”

In response to her fee, Gyakie continued, “Yes. (full amount?) Absolutely. Every single person was paid.”

Her statement punches holes into the viral words of Mr Poku, who said that the show was predominantly charity work.

According to Kojo Poku, none of the artistes who performed that day was paid for the stage appearance.

Every few months, Apple Music’s editorial team features an artist on the African Rising program, showcasing and elevating rising talent out of Africa.

Gyakie being the latest to be announced comes as no surprise as the Songbird remains one of Africa’s most promising acts since her debut project.

Building a steady loyal fanbase from the time she dropped her earliest singles, Gyakie’s success in music was expected.

From “Never Like This” and “Love Is Pretty” getting some buzz online and amongst her peers to her releasing her debut EP which landed her the hit single “Forever”, Gyakie’s growth musically in tandem with her growing success is undeniably clear.

‘Forever’ peaked in 2021 earning the artist millions of streams across over a hundred African countries. Her video for the “Forever” remix with Omah Lay has maxed over 30M views and her songs have constantly been on Apple Music charts across several African countries.

Under the guidance of her label, Flip The Music, Gyakie’s strategic features with artists not limited to Africa have definitely made Gyakie a viable bet for a promising global sensation.

With her sophomore EP, “My Diary” announced to be released on 22nd July, Gyakie promises fans an all-new experience away from her debut SEED EP. She’s already geared up, releasing “Something”, an Afrobeats single earlier in July and “For My Baby” a sultry RnB Highlife fusion, out on streaming platforms now.

The Africa Rising programme was launched in 2020 and has featured artists such as Tems, Amaarae, Blxckie, Ayra Starr, Omah Lay and Buju.

She described as orgasmic the reception she received during her stay in the region, which is in line with her media tour to promote her latest single, Something.

Though the journey was quite patchy and sleep deprived her of familiarizing with the route, Gyakie had a nice stay and the reception from her fans is one she said she won’t trade for anything else.

She was privileged to grace some top radio stations, and even went as far as teaching some hosts and panel the dance moves to her love song.

The highlight of her tour was the massive welcome she received from students of the Ahantaman Girls Senior High School, where she delivered her last performance.

In what has come to many as a surprise, the students were singing word-for-word her month-old song as though they rehearsed its lyrics.

While a few had the opportunity to hug Gyakie, some just took memories of the unforgettable moment.

Gyakie recounts worst moment in her career https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-recounts-worst-moment-in-her-career/ Thu, 26 May 2022 14:13:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2118605 Every artiste has a best and worst moment of their career and Ghanaian songstress Gyakie is no exception.

The song bird, in a recent interview, narrated when she was faced with the most humiliating experience at a time her career was just beginning to take off.

It was during a Republic Hall week at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) when she was billed to perform.

She mounted the stage to perform her very first song, Love is Pretty, but the feedback from her colleagues was not encouraging.

Gyakie recounted how her course mates just stood still while gazing at her as though she was nearly invisible on the stage.

While trying to save the situation, she said the microphone and sound system also gave up on her, which made her panic.

As though that was not enough embarrassment, her colleagues began chanting and hooting ‘away, away, away’ hysterically.

Gyakie said she was left with no option than to run backstage where she broke down in tears.

However, with the encouragement from a few loved ones, she got over the matter and pursued her music career.

That has paid off since currently Gyakie hosts crowd home and abroad and her fans can sing her songs word-for-word.

Gyakie-Yaw Tog snub: The inside story [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/gyakie-yaw-tog-snub-the-inside-story-video/ Wed, 24 Nov 2021 10:50:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2048875 Budding musicians Gyakie and Yaw Tog have made it to major headlines after a video of them icing each other out went viral.

In the widely circulated video, Gyakie is reported to have snubbed the artiste after they came face-to-face at the backstage of an award platform.

With smiles, she hugged fellow rapper Kofi Jamar, but she appeared to ignore Yaw Tog who was reaching out his hand, supposedly for a hug or handshake.

This has sparked allegations that the two have a personal rift, especially since Gyakie had warned not to be compared to other artistes anytime a conversation with Yaw Tog pops up.

Amid the trolling, Yaw Tog also left a message on his Instagram page, “leave toxic people in 2021”, further fueling the suspicion of a ‘beef’.

Clarifying the reports hours later, Kofi Jamar, who wtnessed the roll out of events, stated that there is no fuss between Yaw Tog and Gyakie, adding that the rumoured snub did not occur.

Rather, he stated that Yaw Tog was the first to be hugged and the video in circulation was too short to capture that moment.

Kofi Jamamr stated that after the brief meet-and-greet, they all went ahead to have fun as #TeamGhana billed for a Nigerian event.

While Yaw Tog is yet to comment on the incident, Gyakie has warned of the dangers of a one-sided story.

She is by this subtly debunking the claims that she snubbed her colleague.

For this, the congratulatory message is a big deal for Gyakie, and her fans were anticipating it.

Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the Forever hitmaker said she is only bent on dropping songs that will put Ghana on the map.

I’m here to make good music and to change my life and my family… so if it’s someone’s opinion, I don’t see myself as such… where the music takes me is my motive.

I’m not doing music because I want to be popular. It doesn’t bother me if my song doesn’t make a hit… if you listen to my songs I’m more particular about my lyrics… my motive is to take Ghana music to the world. To bring the foreign market into Ghana, Gyakie told Andy Dosty.
