My life hasn’t been the same since SRC presidency – Guru reveals https://www.adomonline.com/my-life-hasnt-been-the-same-since-src-presidency-guru-reveals/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 20:10:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2601459 Musician-turned-student leader, Guru, has opened up about the unsettling experiences he faced after declaring his intention to contest the University of Ghana SRC presidential elections.

In an interview with Hitz FM, Guru, who later served as SRC President, recalled that the political atmosphere surrounding the election was far more intense and spiritually charged than he had anticipated.

He said that the moment he publicly announced his ambition, his life “hasn’t been normal” ever since.

Guru explained that he initially thought student politics would be just a “normal student’s game,” only to discover that the competition was deeply entrenched in serious political manoeuvring. He revealed that a close associate had even warned him early on, but he underestimated the forces at play.

Many outsiders tend to dismiss student elections as trivial, but Guru noted that the same political structures often produce some of the country’s key leaders.

“People think it’s just student politics, but look at Parliament; the President, the Speaker, many leaders all started from student governance. That’s where they learn the politics they use today,” he explained.

The musician said the weight of the experience was so intense that he has considered producing a documentary to reveal the realities behind student leadership contests, noting that the public barely understands what candidates go through.

Looking ahead, Guru said the ordeal has made him rethink his future in mainstream politics. Although he once dreamed of working with the United Nations, the experience has forced him to prioritize his personal well-being.

“For now, I just have to think about my life,” he admitted, stressing that he must reflect carefully before deciding whether to enter active politics after school.

I spent my first year on campus in a mask due to shyness – Guru https://www.adomonline.com/i-spent-my-first-year-on-campus-in-a-mask-due-to-shyness-guru/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 20:09:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2601290 Rapper and former University of Ghana SRC President, Guru, has revealed that he spent almost his entire first academic year on campus wearing a face mask and hoodie—not because of COVID-19 protocols, but out of sheer shyness and discomfort.

Reflecting on his return to the lecture hall after years of musical success, Guru admitted that transitioning back into student life hit him harder than expected.

Despite his fame, wealth and accomplishments, he said sitting in a classroom full of teenagers and Gen Z students made him extremely self-conscious.

Though he had the option of mature or online classes, he deliberately chose regular lectures because he wanted the authentic student experience, even if it meant blending in with much younger peers.

“When I first entered, I was always wearing masks and hoodies. I was too shy. I didn’t even want to pull up in my Challenger because people would think I was showing off, and I hate that,” he said.

He explained that he avoided moving with security or drawing unnecessary attention to himself, choosing instead to walk into class with close friends, yet the uneasiness remained.

Guru recalled students whispering, recording videos of him, and sometimes gossiping behind him, creating an emotionally draining environment.

He said it took his transition from Level 200 to 300 before he finally gained the confidence to drop the mask and fully engage with campus life.

Over time, he adjusted, especially when he decided to contest for the SRC presidency—a move that forced him to face students openly and navigate the spotlight beyond the music stage.

Despite the initial discomfort, Guru says the experience helped him grow, pushing him out of his shell and teaching him resilience in a different kind of public space.

Guru hails Haruna Iddrisu for 50% cut in Legon hall fees https://www.adomonline.com/guru-hails-haruna-iddrisu-for-50-cut-in-legon-hall-fees/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 13:54:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596114 Former University of Ghana SRC President, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known in showbiz as Guru NKZ, has revealed how his leadership and student advocacy efforts led to a major win for students.

In an interview with Joy Prime, Guru revealed that under his leadership, he secured a 50% reduction in traditional hall fees, with the help of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

He explained that his team fought relentlessly against what they saw as an unfair hike in hall fees, which had been increased from GH¢2,000 to GH¢3,000, placing extra financial pressure on students and parents.

“We fought the system. We petitioned every level of authority, right up to the Minister of Education. With the intervention of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we secured a 50% reduction. It had never happened before, that was a real victory for students,” he shared.

Guru described the achievement as one of the defining milestones of his time in office, adding that it proved the power of student activism when guided by purpose and persistence.

He also reflected on the uniqueness of his leadership journey, noting that it marked a rare moment where someone from the entertainment industry led Ghana’s premier university.

“This is the first time someone from showbiz represented the entire student body. It set a precedent showing that artists, too, can lead, inspire, and influence policy in meaningful ways,” he said.

Guru fumes over alleged sabotage of Legon SRC Artiste Night https://www.adomonline.com/guru-fumes-over-alleged-sabotage-of-legon-src-artiste-night/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 09:35:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588053 Musician and former SRC President of the University of Ghana, Guru, has expressed deep frustration over what he described as deliberate sabotage by some colleague students that led to the flop of an SRC artistes’ event he organized during his tenure.

During a TikTok live session, the “Lapaz Toyota” hitmaker recounted how certain students allegedly reached out to musicians and stakeholders involved in the show, spreading false claims that he had received full funding for the programme.

However, Guru clarified that he tried working with a budget of just GHS 200,000 for the high-profile event, an amount that was significantly insufficient.

“Do you know how much it takes to host an event? Sometimes it costs between ₵500,000 and ₵700,000, but I was working with just ₵200,000. How much would we have even paid Sarkodie or Black Sherif,” Guru lamented.

He explained that he was taking advantage of his mileage and personal relationships with top artistes to make the event happen on a low budget.

Guru alleged that despite his efforts to pull strings within the industry, some individuals within the student community contacted both artistes and the event organizer, advising them to withdraw their support.

He revealed that the interference ultimately crippled the show’s success, insisting that the event’s failure had nothing to do with his leadership or planning.

“So no one should come and ask me why the SRC event flopped. It flopped because of sabotage,” he fumed.

It’s a good feeling leading the student populace of UG – Guru https://www.adomonline.com/its-a-good-feeling-leading-the-student-populace-of-ug-guru/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 15:50:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525209 Ghanaian rapper Guru, who is currently in his final year at the University of Ghana, has discussed his experience as the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.

Reflecting on his transition from being a performer to leading the students, Guru expressed his satisfaction with his role as SRC President at the University of Ghana.

“To me, it’s a great step. It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been here in showbiz, doing all these performances, and so venturing into the academic space was quite a challenge. Leading the entire student populace is also a great feeling because these were some of the things I was hoping to embark on before finishing school. So, I feel good about it,” he shared.

When asked about his motivation for aiming for such a prestigious position at the university, Guru emphasized his desire to impact lives.

“So, I was looking for a space where I could make a difference in the entire jurisdiction. It wasn’t just about myself in the space of music; we impact lives, not just through performances. Now that I’m a student, I have to be able to think beyond that or think outside the box. I wanted to conceptualize the entire experience, either in the space of music while I was a student or venturing into the academic realm, where I would be leading the student populace,” he explained.

Guru further elaborated on his decision to run for SRC President, sharing his thought process: “I was initially considering vying for a position in my department, but I realized limiting myself to just one sector of the institution wouldn’t be the best approach. I wanted to take on the bigger picture—the larger goal that would impact the entire student body. So I decided to go for the SRC.”

Guru also explained what helped him win the position, saying, “In music, I’ve always been focused on projecting a certain type of content. I tend to avoid discussions in certain spaces, but at the end of the day, the dynamics in music always shift the conversation.”

Guru’s leadership as SRC President at the University of Ghana showcases his commitment to serving the student community and making a positive impact beyond his musical career.

Guru described the performance as more than just music, highlighting it as a patriotic statement that raised the Ghanaian flag on one of the world’s biggest stages.

He also commended Amaarae for using her set to spotlight other Ghanaian artists like the La Même Gang, Yaw Tog, Eazzy, and the Asakaa Boys.

“I was so happy hearing her sing other people’s songs. That was powerful. She wasn’t selfish; she gave others visibility and traction,” he added.

Guru acknowledged Amaarae’s unique marketing strategy, noting that while it may seem distant to the local market, it is clearly effective.

He praised Amaarae as the liaison between the Ghanaian music industry and the global stage and urged fans to support her, emphasizing that her success is a win for the entire country.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, Guru explained that balancing his fame with academic life was difficult. “It is very difficult being an SRC president at the University of Ghana. What we hate in Legon is projecting your artistic lifestyle and celebrity status onto students. There’s a gap—you either come to perform, or you leave the superstardom at the door,” he revealed.

Guru also opened up about how he tried to maintain a low profile on campus. “Whenever I enter class, I would wear a nose mask and a hoodie to avoid attention. It was uncomfortable, but you have no choice,” he said. Despite his efforts to blend in, his recognition among fellow students remained a challenge. “In the beginning, I felt very uncomfortable. People would ask, ‘Who is he?’ Some even pretended not to recognize me,” Guru recalled.

The rapper explained that, at the University of Ghana, students are not forced to answer questions in class, which allowed him to maintain some anonymity. “Lecturers won’t force you to answer questions. I was able to hide for almost three years without people realizing I was a student,” he added.

Guru also shared how he coped with academic pressures. “I identified some ‘nerds’ who helped me with my studies whenever I faced challenges. I made sure to maintain a good GPA, as I didn’t want to graduate with just a pass,” he said.

Despite the difficulties of balancing his celebrity status and academic responsibilities, Guru managed to navigate university life successfully, keeping a low profile while excelling in his academic pursuits.

Mixed reactions as Guru turns SRC office into entertainment hub https://www.adomonline.com/mixed-reactions-as-guru-turns-src-office-into-entertainment-hub/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:08:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2507280

Musician Guru, who currently serves as the SRC President of the University of Ghana, has sparked mixed reactions after footage surfaced showing him celebrating in his official SRC office.

In what appeared to be a mini concert, Guru and his entourage energetically performed some of his hit songs, including Lapaz Toyota, Kasiebo featuring Obrafour, and Meba Be Tia Wo featuring Lil Win.

The atmosphere in the office was loud and lively, resembling an entertainment hub rather than an administrative space.

The viral video has triggered divided opinions among students and the general public. While some argue that Guru deserves to unwind since he was in the entertainment industry before assuming office, others insist that the SRC office should be a space for serious leadership and decision-making.

The University’s official social media platform, where the video was shared, questioned his actions, captioning the footage: “Student leadership comes with responsibilities, including maintaining the integrity of official spaces. Seeing the SRC President’s office being used for casual entertainment makes one wonder about the standards we uphold as the premier university.”

However, others defended him, stating that his background in entertainment does not disqualify him from leadership and that his ability to connect with students in a relaxed setting could be an asset.

UG student sues University and others over reinclusion of Guru, others in SRC election https://www.adomonline.com/ug-student-sues-university-and-others-over-reinclusion-of-guru-others-in-src-election/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 07:22:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450388 A second-year student at the University of Ghana (UG) has filed a lawsuit at the Circuit Court in Adentan, Accra, against the University, its senior officials, and the Electoral Commissioner of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

Joseph Mawuli Asioh’s lawsuit challenges the inclusion of two disqualified candidates in the 2024 SRC elections, citing procedural violations by the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs.

The defendants in the suit are the University of Ghana, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Professor Gordon A. Awandare), the Dean of Students Affairs (Professor Rosina Kyerematen), and the SRC Electoral Commissioner (Mudassir-Ibn Ibrahim).

Background

The legal dispute began when the SRC Vetting Committee disqualified two aspirants, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah and Maradona Adjei Yeboah (popularly known as Guru), for not meeting the residential requirement stipulated in the SRC Constitution.

The disqualified candidates subsequently appealed their disqualification to the SRC Court.

The SRC court ruled against the disqualified candidates and upheld the decision of the Vetting Committee.

However, despite the hearing of the case by the Judicial Board, the plaintiff contends that the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gordon Awandare instructed the Dean of Students Affairs to convene the SRC Appeals Board to hear the case.

The Appeals Board, which typically handles appeals and does not have original jurisdiction, controversially heard the matter.

In a decision that the plaintiff describes as unlawful, the Appeals Board overturned the Judicial Board’s ruling and reinstated the disqualified candidates, allowing them to contest in the upcoming SRC elections.

Reliefs Sought

Joseph Mawuli Asioh is seeking several declarations and orders from the court, including:

a. A declaration that the decision of the Vetting Committee to disqualify the two candidates was lawful and binding.
b. A declaration that the Appeals Board had no jurisdiction to overturn the Judicial Board’s ruling, especially in the absence of a formal appeal.
c. An order to restrain the defendants from interfering with the SRC electoral process.
d. An order preventing the inclusion of the disqualified candidates in the SRC elections.
The plaintiff is also seeking costs, including solicitor’s fees.

JoyNews understands that the defendants have been served with the writ of summons, and the case is expected to be heard in the Circuit Court in Adentan.

Additionally, Mawuli has filed for an interlocutory injunction to prevent the disqualified candidates from participating in the elections until the court delivers a final ruling.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Guru also outlined key issues he aims to address if elected SRC President, including accommodation, transportation, and the need for free data for online lectures.

“Accommodation is a problem, 60 percent of the students come from home, and transportation is difficult because the country is already hard,” he explained.

Guru also plans to implement a policy for at least one sick bay in every hall, highlighting his focus on student welfare.

I blacked out on stage over ‘juju’ attack by my 3 assistants – Guru reveals https://www.adomonline.com/i-blacked-out-on-stage-over-juju-attack-by-my-3-assistants-guru-reveals/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 13:12:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2446646 Ghanaian rapper Guru, born Maradona Yeboah Adjei, has opened up about a mysterious on-stage blackout he experienced, claiming it was the result of a spiritual attack orchestrated by his former assistants.

Recounting the incident, Guru said everything seemed normal during his performance, with the crowd hyped and energy high.

However, at the peak of the show, he suddenly went mute and became stiff, unable to speak or perform.

The DJ even stopped the music, thinking he wanted to interact with the fans, but Guru was physically unable to continue.

“I don’t drink, so that wasn’t the cause. I drank several bottles of water, but nothing was working. I had to signal to my crew that something was wrong. We apologized to the fans and canceled the show” Guru shared on Okukuseku with Emelia Brobbey.

After the incident, Guru said he visited several pastors who all warned him that he was under a spiritual attack, but he ignored.

The situation worsened, with Guru suffering from frequent stomach pains and a sore throat. His voice started breaking, leading him to seek medical help.

However, it wasn’t until he visited herbalists that the true extent of the issue became clear.

According to Guru, the herbalists extracted metal objects, pins from his throat, and a stick with thorns and hooks from his stomach.

He added that the spiritual attack which lasted for eight months took a toll on his health.

The musician said he became weaker and thinner during the period, even suffering a car accident.

Guru files petition against SRC-EC over presidency disqualification https://www.adomonline.com/guru-files-petition-against-src-ec-over-presidency-disqualification/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 02:42:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2437174 Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru NKZ, has filed a petition against the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) Electoral Commission following his disqualification from the SRC presidential race.

The disqualification was based on Guru’s non-resident status, a violation of Article 30, which mandates that candidates must be campus residents and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position in their hall.

During vetting, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, confirmed that they were not residents of any hall, leading to their disqualification.

In response, Guru’s legal team has lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking a review of the decision.

Additionally, an interim injunction has been submitted to the Judicial Board, requesting a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing and ruling can be made.

Guru expressed his commitment to ensuring inclusivity in the SRC, vowing to fight against any form of discrimination within the university.

“We shall ensure that there is no discrimination towards any student, whether resident or non-resident, able or with special needs, first Degree or PFD, Local or International, Korle-Bu, City Campus or Distance education, including all the Regional Learning Centers across the length and breadth of the country”.

He remains confident that the Judicial Board will grant a fair hearing and deliver a just outcome.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, the musician disclosed that, growing up, it has always been his dream and ambition to be employed in the US-based intergovernmental organisation.

This, according to him, influenced his decision to study Political Science and Information Studies, which he is currently pursuing at the University of Ghana, to enable him to gain the requisite knowledge about the political field.

Although it has been stressful and challenging, Guru is determined to complete the programme to accomplish his aspiration.

Despite his goals, the “Mpaebo” hitmaker has no plans to give up music, saying it is the easiest way to riches no matter the ups and downs, especially in terms of investment.

Gurunkz narrated how he strived for financial support as a beginner in the music industry after he deferred his marketing course in the university because he believed in himself.

“I did marketing coming up, and I believed in myself so much that I had to defer while at the university. Doing so, I needed people to also come on board and invest in the craft, but I never had anyone till I met Obrafour through a collaboration.”

He later got a bit of support, but it did not meet his expectations of putting him in the spotlight, which he thinks prolonged the development of his dreams.

He recounted how music has helped him attain wealth and created businesses, including real estate, farms, and others.

After taking a break from music production, Guru NKZ is back with another hit song titled “Eye Nwanwa,” featuring actor and comedian Dr. Likee.

Guru insulted me and my entire family – Kuami Eugene reveals https://www.adomonline.com/guru-insulted-me-and-my-entire-family-kuami-eugene-reveals/ Wed, 03 May 2023 16:09:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2245266 Highlife act Kuami Eugene has reiterated his decision not to collaborate with Guru, known privately as Maradona Yeboah Adjei.

Explaining his decision in an interview with Delay, Eugene said his colleague is short tempered and made some disrespectful comments about him and his family.

It all stemmed from Guru’s displeasure with Eugene’s manager, Richie, after he declined a proposal for a collaboration between the artistes.

In giving his version of the saga, Kuami Eugene said Guru practically insulted his being and craft, and in extension, dissed his mother and father as well.

“This is an issue between Guru and Richie but for him to grant an interview and insult me and offend my family as well as a man purporting to be my father. He recorded a diss song for me and insulted both of my parents. He is a senior colleague and I did not expect that from him.”

In Guru’s diss song, Who Born Dog, he described Kuami Eugene as disrespectful, talentless and a brown-noser.

He went the extreme when he labelled Eugene’s mother a ‘slut’ and his father, a deadbeat.

The tags have warranted Eugene’s decision never to work with Guru, or have him in his personal space.

Ghanaian awards schemes kill more artistes than make them – Guru [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-awards-schemes-kill-more-artistes-than-make-them-guru-video/ Mon, 13 Jun 2022 16:11:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2125537 Rapper Guru says most of the awards schemes organised in the country do more harm than good.

According to him, instead of the music events highlighting the feat of performing musicians, the awards are rather given to people who don’t deserve them.

Guru explained that, the digital age has made it possible for everyone to determine what song is topping the streaming platforms, hence when an award is given to another artiste who is not on the list, then there is a problem.

The awards scheme is killing artistes more than making them… Ghana is getting more into the global world and everyone knows what is happening.

He explained that this attitude has been killing the hope and talent of artistes who were poised to be at the top since their efforts weren’t appreciated.

“If you ask anyone what is happening in the music world, everyone knows what song is streaming to the top. So if you don’t honour those songs but rather someone else, they will have a problem. You are rather making it look like they don’t relate with you.”

Guru also emphasised on the fact that, some of the industry players who have record labels also serve on the board of these schemes, hence it’s likely their artistes will be crowned winners regardless.

If a manager is under the awards scheme, don’t you think favouritism will be more on your behalf than me? Guru queried.

Speaking on Ahosepe Xtra on Adom TV, he condemned the actions of the Police regarding the Nkoranza incident to be unprofessional.

“To me, first of all, making the case as the guy being an armed robber was wrong without giving the proof and shooting through the crowd is wrong,” Guru noted.

“You need to bring footage and proof to convince the people,” he added.

According to him, critics, who are attacking his artiste for allegedly disrespecting his colleague musician Guru, are wrong to do so.

Kuami Eugene was in the news after he granted an interview saying he wouldn’t feature Guru because the latter disrespected his boss, Mr Mensah.

However, Guru in a riposte told Kuami Eugene he wouldn’t be on top of his craft forever, hence he should respect elders in the game.

But, Mr Mensah has taken to his social media pages to explain himself.

MORE:

Read the full text below:

I normally stay quiet in most situations but this time I only feel it’s right I say something. Guru asked Lynx for a feature with either KiDi or Kuami Eugene, but the request was denied.

He then went from one media house to another insulting myself and other members of Lynx management, even to the extent of accusing us of sabotaging his career for the past 10 years.

He spun stories which implied we have some extreme power in the industry to vitiate someone’s career.

As usual my team and I stuck to our usual demeanour and stayed mute.

When Kuami Eugene was asked in an interview if he would feature Guru, he simply said he couldn’t because Guru had insulted me consistently, and it wouldn’t be right to do a feature with someone who was disrespecting his boss.

Let’s call a spade a spade. There was nothing disrespectful in what Eugene said. I’m a responsible leader, and I would have chastised my artiste if he spoke out of turn.

So my question is, those attacking Eugene for allegedly disrespecting his elder Guru, where were they when Guru was attacking myself and my reputation in a disrespectful manner?

We talk about unity in the industry and then we go around bringing each other down.

I personally have no problem with Guru. Never have and never will. I like to conserve my energy towards constant success and development than to waste my time on petty squabbling.

Guru is a natural hitmaker, and doesn’t need KiDi nor Kuami Eugene on his song to make a hit.

So there really should be no offence taken in any of this. So can we just drop all this ‘wahala’ and everyone go back to making hits for Ghana?

Guru pens long letter to Kuami Eugene to make a point https://www.adomonline.com/guru-pens-long-letter-to-kuami-eugene-to-make-a-point/ Tue, 09 Feb 2021 08:36:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1916680 Rapper Guru says he hasn’t begged singer Kuami Eugene for a collaboration, hence the former shouldn’t propagate such into the public domain.

This comes after Kuami Eugene, in an earlier interview, said he cannot do a song with Guru because he doesn’t see eye to eye with his record label boss Richie Mensah.

According to Kuami Eugene, Guru, cannot disrespect his producer and expect him to feature on his song.

But Guru has taken to his social media pages to reply the ‘Rockstar’ for his assertion.

MORE:

Dear Kuami Eugene,

I admire your hard work and how well you have come. I am already in my 13th year in this industry and I have been able to give back to back hits.

I made sure I had not less than 4 hit songs every year and in 2014 i gave 10 MEGA hits in one calendar year, I don’t know how old you were at that time though.

The industry is in difficult times which we need to join hands to change or continue with the mistakes our predecessors made.

Remember some people started with me but they could not last long so I appreciate how far God has brought me.

I know that you will not be under Lynx Entertainment forever but remember not to have any issue with Lynx Entertainment before you leave because those that exited couldn’t maintain the hype.

There are always new Lords so remember nothing LASTS forever.

Point of correction I never begged for a Collaboration. I didn’t ask for Collaboration because I wanted a hit song, I have a lot of hit songs and I’m proud of that.

I wanted you to know I appreciate your craft THAT IS why i wanted us to work together and nothing more.

I wish you well. Thank You

N K Z

Among the critics is hiplife artiste Guru.

But, speaking on Hitz FM to respond to the criticisms, Kuami Eugene smirked when host, Andy Dosty, read out Guru’s demeaning comment.

“This is Ghana, everyone is opinionated,” was his initial reaction, before admitting Guru, just like many others, have every right to fight for their favourites.

“If Sark had won, people will come and say he didn’t deserve it: it’s normal, if Kofi Kinaata had won, Sark Nation will say he didn’t deserve it, so it’s both ways. People like to express themselves and I think Guru has every right to feel this way,” he said.
