Ms. Gharbin earned international acclaim after creating the world’s largest beaded bag sculpture—a striking piece crafted in Ghana’s national colours and adorned with Adinkra symbols representing resilience, loyalty, and excellence.

Beyond the record itself, the government is now focusing on turning the global attention into long-term cultural and economic value.

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, described the achievement as an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s cultural diplomacy and position the country strategically within the global creative arts landscape.

She explained that the Ministry will work closely with the creative team to integrate the record-breaking artwork into national tourism campaigns, exhibitions, and cultural showcases both locally and internationally.

“Such collaborations are essential in transforming artistic excellence into viable tourism products capable of attracting visitors, creating jobs, and generating revenue for the country,” the Minister noted.

The Ministry is expected to explore partnerships with tourism agencies, event organisers, and cultural institutions to showcase the sculpture at major festivals, heritage events, and international expos.

The initiative reflects a broader strategy by the government to harness creative milestones not just as moments of celebration, but as tools for sustained tourism growth and global cultural promotion.

GWR: Nigerian woman sets record with wig taller than three-storey building https://www.adomonline.com/gwr-nigerian-woman-sets-record-with-wig-taller-than-three-storey-building/ Thu, 18 Dec 2025 06:29:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2611595 Nigerian woman has made a wig taller than a three-storey building to claim a hat-trick of wig world records.

Helen Williams had already created the world’s longest handmade wig at 351.28 m (1,152 ft 5 in) and the widest wig at 3.65 m (11 ft 11 in).

And now, she’s added the tallest wig to her collection by creating one that stands a whopping 15.37 m (50.42 ft) off the top of her head.

It literally towers over the building Helen is posing outside of… and the hair piece is taller than the Hollywood sign is wide!

“I don’t think I’ll ever stop breaking records,” Helen told us.

“To have a record is like climbing a mountain. The climb is hard and full of challenges but the view from the top is incredible.

Helen working on the wig

“Breaking another record shows that nothing is impossible.”

Helen is a professional wig maker, but said that this latest record-breaking creation was the toughest one yet.

She explained: “Before the attempt, I did a test run and to be honest, the test one failed.

Helen wearing the wig that's taller than a building

“Making the wig stand was going to be very difficult but I went back and started designing again.

“Finally, I was able to figure out how to go about it and I started my official attempt months later and everything went well.”

Helen used 250 bundles of string hair to make the wig and it cost over 3 million Naira, which is around £1,551 or $2,066.

The whole process of making the wig took two weeks and brought lots of challenges that Helen had to overcome.

She said: “The longest wig was easiest as a wig maker but the most technical and most challenging record was the tallest wig, it was very challenging because of the construction of the structure, it was very difficult.

“You can know how to make a wig and have 10 or 20 years of experience, but if the internal structure doesn’t hold you won’t get the record.”

Helen, who also holds records for most hair clips in a wig in 30 seconds (94) and most hair clips on the head in 30 seconds (97), says she feels her records represent her courage and determination.

She said: “Each record represents a battle I fought against doubt, fear and limits.

“The records remind me that if you refuse to give up, anything is possible.”

When asked if she’s done breaking records, Helen said: “There are more records to break, more boundaries to push and more dreams to achieve.”

The hit South Korean dystopian thriller was first released on the streaming platform in 2021, and it quickly became a global phenomenon.

From 27 September to 3 October 2021, the show clocked in an unprecedented 571.76 million viewing hours.

But the record breaking certainly didn’t end there.

Squid Game reached the No.1 position in 97 territories, surpassing period drama Bridgerton as the most popular TV show on the world’s most subscribed-to streaming service.

The show follows divorced father Seong Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae (South Korea), who has racked up a huge gambling debt while living with his elderly mother.

He thinks his luck is in when he’s invited to play a series of children’s games for a chance to win a large cash prize, but it’s far more sinister than that.

Along with 455 other players – he is Player 456 – he’s taken to an unknown location and kept in line by armed guards in pink jumpsuits and masks.

They soon discover that losing a game doesn’t just mean they’re eliminated, it means they die.

The show helped Jung-jae make history, when he became the first actor to win an Emmy for a non-English-language performance.

Guinness World Records exposes Ghanaian content creator over ‘fake’ eat-a-thon https://www.adomonline.com/guinness-world-records-exposes-ghanaian-content-creator-over-fake-eat-a-thon/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 22:04:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2469752
Guinness World Records (GWR) has debunked claims by Ghanaian content creator Clementina Nkrumah, popularly known as Afua Nash, who announced her attempt to set a world record for the longest eating marathon.
Afua Nash’s attempt was marketed as a four-day, seven-hour, and 20-minute non-stop eating marathon scheduled to start on Monday, November 11, 2024, live on the Savage Room show at Afropod Studios.
The promotional campaign featured various flyers circulated on social media, drawing considerable public interest.

However, GWR has taken to its official Twitter page to clarify that it no longer recognizes records for extended eating marathons.

While the organization once tracked such feats, it has since updated its guidelines.

According to GWR, consumption records are now based on the rate of consumption rather than duration, with attempts typically lasting only up to three minutes depending on the type of food.

Afua Nash has yet to publicly respond to GWR’s clarification, but the incident has sparked discussions about authenticity in record-setting attempts.

Chefs Association of Ghana disowns Chef Smith https://www.adomonline.com/chefs-association-of-ghana-disowns-chef-smith/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 12:40:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2417620 The Chefs Association of Ghana has said Chef Smith is not a registered member of their organization.

This revelation by the Association’s General Secretary, Peter Agbovi adds to the woes of the chef who is under fire for claiming a world title after a cook-a-thon challenge.

“You can call him a chef because he is a professional, but he is not a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana,” Agbovi stated.

He explained that, the Association became aware of Chef Smith’s cook-a-thon on social media.

Mr. Agbovi said they became alarmed when they saw their logo on Chef Smith’s attire.

However, he said all attempts to get him to register as a member proved futile, that is why they did not post Chef Smith on their platform.

On the Guinness World Record brouhaha, the chef could not fathom why a professional like Chief Smith will fake such an important certificate.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s a fake Guinness World Records certificate. Once you are a qualified chef, we give you respect. It was heartbreaking to see a colleague chef come out with a fake certificate, and we don’t know if it’s his own doing. We have not been able to speak with him yet,” Mr. Agbovi said in an interview on GhOne.

He said given the circumstance, Chef Smith cannot claim to be a member of the Association.

Mr. Agbovi emphasizes the importance of proper registration and adherence to guidelines for anyone wishing to attempt significant culinary feats.

This ensures the authenticity and credibility of their achievements within the professional culinary community.

With a nail brush in hand, Lisha Dachor,19, whizzed around an events centre in Plateau state, northern Nigeria, adorning hundreds of fingernails with blue, pink and purple varnish.

Her three-day marathon came to a nail-biting end on Wednesday.

Guinness World Record (GWR) rules state that for Ms Dackor’s attempt to count, she must paint 60 fingernails per hour.

She is now waiting for GWR to review her attempt after she submits her evidence.

Lisha Dachor hopes the Guinness World Record will ratify her evidence soon

Ms Dachor said she embarked on this challenge to change the narrative about teen mothers like herself.

“I want to give people hope, especially single mothers because many people don’t think we have anything to offer,” she told the BBC.

The nail technician has been working professionally for almost three years and says she also wants to put women from northern Nigeria in the spotlight.

Ms Dachor says she also hopes her record attempt will put Plateau, her home state, on the map.

Plateau is where Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north meets the largely Christian south and many communities are mixed.

The region has battled decades of insecurity and conflict between different ethnic and religious groups, which has seen thousands killed.

“People judge the Plateau by the cover. Apart from the ethnic issues we have, Plateau is a beautiful place. I got support from all ethnic groups while I embarked on this attempt,” she said.

Guinness World Records confirms Nigerian lady’s sing-a-thon attempt https://www.adomonline.com/guinness-world-records-confirms-nigerian-ladys-sing-a-thon-attempt/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 18:11:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2349995 Ewaoluwa Olatunji, who goes by the stage name Ewa Cole aka “Queen of Afro-Solk”, has been awarded the record for the longest marathon singing Christmas songs

Ewa sang for a total of 31 hours from 27-28 December to become the first holder of this record.

The 29-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, said she took on this challenge to “promote peace and unity” and to inspire confidence in young people.

“Since childhood, I’ve been preparing for this moment. I was often put on stage to lead and perform at my school’s Christmas carols,” Ewa revealed.

Throughout her record attempt, Ewa sang classic Christmas songs such as “Deck the Halls”, “Frosty the Snowman”, “Silent Night” and numerous others. She was not allowed to repeat any song within a one-hour period.

Just like all other ‘longest marathon’ record attempts, after every continuous hour of singing, Ewa was permitted a five-minute rest break, which could be accumulated if not taken. These were the only times that she could eat, sleep, or use the bathroom.

The prolonged spells of singing took their toll on Ewa, who battled fatigue, throat pain and stomach problems during her sing-athon.

“The most challenging period for me was between the eighth and 12th hours,” she said.

“I had consumed a drink that caused mild food poisoning symptoms, forcing me to hold in flatulence to avoid public embarrassment. I was simultaneously experiencing profuse sweating, stomach, head, and throat aches, along with an urgent need to use the restroom.”

Although she overcame this hurdle, her throat pain then began to worsen, and after 20 hours it had “intensified to an unbearable level”.

“By the 20th hour, I was desperate for a miraculous reprieve,” Ewa admitted.

She considered giving up, but fortunately she was able to persevere through the pain and did not let it affect her ability to sing.

I never once stopped singing, even when I completely lost my voice. I will say that God was absolutely by my side all through.

Ewa, who works as a software engineer and also runs her own clothing brand, says she’s thrilled to have earned this Guinness World Records title and is “still buzzing with excitement”.

Having created her own music genre called “Afro-Solk”, stemmed from the fusion of Afro-pop, soul, and folk music, Ewa is excited to see where her singing career goes from here.

“It’s incredible to consider all the limitless possibilities that lie ahead,” she said.

“I can’t wait to explore and make the most of them!”

Meet the 1-year-old Ghanaian attempting to break Guinness World Record https://www.adomonline.com/meet-the-1-year-old-ghanaian-attempting-to-break-guinness-world-record/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 08:47:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2333572 In an audacious attempt to etch his name into the prestigious Guinness World Records (GWR), one-year-old Ghanaian, Ace Liam, is attempting to break a record as the Youngest Artist in the world.

Ace, the young painting prodigy, embarked on this remarkable journey under the guidance of his mother, Chantelle Kuukua Eghan, a visual artist herself.

This unique venture began when Chantelle discovered the specific category in the Guinness World Records, noting that the record had remained unbroken for over two decades, last achieved by a 3-year-old artist.

Confident of her son’s artistic prowess, Chantelle said she filed an application which took about five months for the GWR to approve the attempt.

In an interview with Joy News, she revealed Ace’s creative journey began at just six months old and he has since had an impressive knack for colors and painting.

She revealed that, Ace began painting on larger canvas and his earlier pieces were crafted utilizing not just his hands, but his entire body movements.

Ace’s portfolio already boasts an impressive collection of 12 paintings, with his 13th creation currently in progress.

However, just nine of this paintings would be featured on the exhibition at the Museum of Science and Technology, scheduled from December 15 to January 21..

The Guinness World Records guideline is that Ace must organize an exhibition and sell his artworks, not necessarily do a live painting.

However, behind-the-scenes footages of the creation of his artworks must be uploaded on his social media with handle ace_liam_paints.

Also, a receipt of all subsequent sales from the exhibition must be submitted to GWR for the attempt’s validation.

Inspired by Ace’s impressive talent, Chantelle said she has made a substantial financial investment of GH¢10,000, covering media coverage, art supplies and other expenses, all of which are also requirements by the GWR.

Currently, 7 out of Ace’s 9 artworks on display have been successfully sold, with just two more to go, to etch him the record.

Why Guinness World Records deactivated the Longest Kiss challenge https://www.adomonline.com/why-guinness-world-records-deactivated-the-longest-kiss-challenge/ Wed, 12 Jul 2023 11:07:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2271793 The longest kiss ever lasted 58 hours 35 minutes, achieved by Thai couple Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat.

The superlative smooch took place at an event organised by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Pattaya, Thailand, beginning on 12 February 2013 and ending two days later, on Valentine’s Day.

Nine couples entered the annual competition, including one in their 70s (who only lasted 1 hour 38 minutes due to the husband’s inability to stand any longer).

Four couples remained when the previous record of 50 hours 25 minutes (set one year earlier by two Thai men) was broken. Ekkachai and Laksana – who had set the record once before in 2011 – ultimately won the contest, scooping the grand prize of 100,000 Thai Baht ($3,300; £2,131) and two diamond rings worth 100,000 Baht.

However, soon after, we deactivated the record category.

We did this because the competition had become too dangerous, and some of the rules conflicted with our current, updated policies.

Here were the rules of the record, which all challengers were required to follow:

  • The kiss must be continuous and the lips must be touching at all times. If the lips part, the couple are immediately disqualified.
  • Contestants may consume liquids via a straw during the attempt, but again, the lips must not part.
  • The couple must be awake at all times.
  • The contestants must stand during the attempt and cannot be propped together by any aids.
  • No rest breaks are allowed.
  • Adult nappies/diapers or incontinence pads are not allowed to be worn.

Couples were allowed to use the toilet, however, they were required to remain kissing while doing so. They were kept under the watchful eye of an accompanying referee to ensure there was no cheating.

Nonthawat Charoenkaesornsin and Thanakorn Sitthiamthong broke the record in 2012 after kissing for 50 hours 25 minutes

As the record to beat became longer and longer, and because rest breaks were not permitted, participants were prone to succumbing to the dangers associated with sleep deprivation, such as psychosis.

There had already been several instances of kissing-contest competitors suffering ill effects during previous record attempts.

For example, the record holders in 1999, Karmit Tzubera and Dror Orpaz (Israel) were barely conscious after kissing for 30 hours 45 minutes. They almost fainted after winning the contest and were promptly rushed to the hospital, where they were treated for fatigue. Their prize for winning was a trip around the world and $2,500 (£1,525) in cash.

In 2004, 37-year-old Andrea Sarti (Italy) had to be resuscitated with oxygen after kissing his girlfriend, Anna Chen (Thailand), for 31 hours 18 minutes. He suffered muscle cramps during the attempt and needed Anna to massage him to alleviate the pain.

One woman, participating in a contest in 2011, passed out after just 30 minutes.

Although we no longer monitor the longest kiss record, we have replaced it with something else: the longest kissing marathon.

The crucial difference, as with all our ‘longest marathon’ records, is that challengers are permitted rest breaks. After every continuous hour of kissing, challengers earn five minutes of rest, which can be accumulated if not used.

Challengers are allowed to sleep, eat, and separate their lips during these rest breaks, mitigating the risk of passing out, suffering psychosis, or requiring resuscitation.

There is no current record holder for the longest kissing marathon. Could you be the first?

History of the longest kiss world record

  • March 1998: Mark and Roberta Griswold of Michigan, USA, kissed continuously for 29 hours at the ‘Breath Savers Longest Kiss Challenge’ in New York City, winning a one-week trip to Paris. The competing couples qualified by winning regional kissing contests which were held all around the USA.
  • April 1999: Israeli couple Karmit Tzubera and Dror Orpaz were the winners of a kissing contest held in Tel-Aviv, Israel, after kissing for 30 hours 45 minutes. As previously mentioned, they were rushed to hospital afterwards, and won a trip around the world as well as $2,500 in cash.
  • December 2001: American couple Louisa Almedovar, 19, and Rich Langley, 22, locked lips for 30 hours 59 minutes at the television studios of the Ricki Lake talk show in New York City.
  • February 2004: Italian lorry driver Andrea Sarti, 37, and his girlfriend Anna Chen, 26, of Thailand, kissed for 31 hours 18 minutes, winning a contest held in Vincenza, Italy.
  • July 2005: English couple James Belshaw and Sophia Severin kissed continuously for 31 hours 30 minutes at the Plaza Shopping Centre in London. During the second day of their attempt, the tragic 7 July bombings occurred, including one blast on a bus less than a mile away at Tavistock Place.

  • February 2009: Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart of Germany kissed for 32 hours 7 minutes at the Hamburger Hof Shopping Centre in Hamburg, Germany.
  • February 2011: Married Thai couple Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat kissed for 46 hours 24 minutes at an event hosted by Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks in Pattaya, Thailand. They won a diamond ring worth 50,000 Thai Baht and a 100,000 Baht cash prize.
  • February 2012: The only gay couple to hold this record, Nonthawat Charoenkaesornsin and Thanakorn Sitthiamthong, kissed for 50 hours 25 minutes at an event organised by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Pattaya, Thailand. They were awarded two diamond rings; 100,000 Baht; and a gift voucher for a five-star hotel in Phuket.
  • February 2013: Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat won back the record, along with the aforementioned prizes, after kissing for 58 hours 35 minutes, becoming the final holders of this record before its deactivation.

Nigerian lady faints attempting to break Guinness World Record for longest massage https://www.adomonline.com/nigerian-lady-faints-attempting-to-break-guinness-world-record-for-longest-massage/ Tue, 04 Jul 2023 13:13:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2268059 A Nigerian masseuse has gone viral after she failed in her attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest massage on different individuals.

Joyce Ijeoma was expecting to massage numerous people in 72 hours to break the existing record.

She began on July 1, hoping to complete the challenge, however, the masseuse fainted during one of her sessions, after reportedly completing 50 hours.

In the video that has gone viral, Joyce’s assistant was seen catching her as she fell to her knees while massaging. The assistant called for help and was assisted by another individual on the set.

This comes after Nigerian Chef Hilda Baci gained national and international support when she embarked on a journey to break the Guinness World Records’ longest cooking marathon.

Following Hilda Baci’s cook-a-Thon, there has been a craze recently as some people have attempted to break Guinness World Records.

Hilda Baci awarded record for world’s longest cooking marathon https://www.adomonline.com/hilda-baci-awarded-record-for-worlds-longest-cooking-marathon/ Tue, 13 Jun 2023 15:49:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2259508 Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.

As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt.

The previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda attempted this record to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”

“I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities,” she added.

Hilda prepared for the event by creating a 35-item menu “as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.

She ensured that she had the necessary ingredients to make each recipe, with her team procuring further food items while the cook-a-thon was underway “based on what was needed to be topped up.”

Hilda’s record attempt took the world of social media by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond following her progress via an Instagram live stream.

Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans.

Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.

Hilda was required to abide by several rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon:

  • There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time.
  • A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record.

One of the most important rules of our food-related record attempts is that all items must be consumed after cooking. To this end, Hilda invited any and all members of the Nigerian public to come and eat her freshly made meals. All leftover food was donated to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.

“My team’s and my goal for this event was to make it free to all and to feed the less privileged,” Hilda said.

According to Hilda, each pot of food she cooked was big enough to serve 30-35 people, and “appropriate stock control was conducted” to avoid any wastage of food.

After graduating from Madonna University, Nigeria, with a degree in sociology, Hilda decided to embark on her culinary career. She was inspired by her mother, Lynda Ndukwe, who is also a chef.

Hilda went from success to success, hosting television show Dine on a Budget in 2020, before winning the Jollof Face-off competition in 2021. Representing her native Nigeria, Hilda beat Ghana’s Leslie Kumordzie to claim the victory.

Now, in 2023, she is officially a Guinness World Records title holder. Congratulations, Hilda!
