Six people, including the head of the Gomoa Obuasi Asona Royal Family, Agya Amoh, are in critical condition following an attack on the palace.

They are currently receiving treatment at the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital.

A group of irate youth on Sunday stormed the palace, vandalizing properties, including two vehicles belonging to the chief, in connection with a chieftaincy dispute.

Gomoa Obuasi, a farming community with a population of over 7,000, has been without a chief for the past five years until the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council stepped in to install a new leader.

On Sunday, the newly installed chief, Nana Mbir Asomako IX, and his elders were holding a family meeting at the palace when some youth allegedly invaded the premises.

They massed up, pelting stones, leaving six people seriously injured.

Sources within the police indicate that the Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council, Obrempong Nyanful Akrampah, in consultation with Gomoa Obuasi authorities, appointed Kwabena Atta as acting chief following the demise of the substantive chief.

However, the regent has failed to hand over power to the new chief, leading to the violent clash.

Speaking to Adom News, Nana Mbir Asomako IX said the youth hurled stones for over three hours before they managed to escape to the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command.

He claimed that the group attempted to set the palace on fire by pouring fuel on the building.

The chief also alleged that Kwabena Atta had previously mobilized the same youth to destroy the Gomoa Obuasi police station after an okada rider was beheaded.

He has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to beef up security in the area.
