The contribution underscores the bank’s commitment to strengthening media development and supporting institutions that promote professional journalism.

Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana, Julian Opuni, said the donation followed a formal request from the Association and aligns with the bank’s broader corporate responsibility to support the media.

“We received a request from the GJA, and as part of our pledge to support, we are donating GH¢50,000 towards the press centre project,” he announced at a one-day financial sector training programme for journalists in Kumasi organised by Fidelity Bank.

According to him, the bank recognises the vital role journalists play in national development and values their continued partnership, not only in the Ashanti Region but across the country.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Kofi Adu Domfeh, expressed appreciation for the timely financial support and also commended the immediate past executives of the Association for initiating the appeal for funds.

He explained that although the Association previously lost land earmarked for the project, intervention by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has resulted in the allocation of a new site to facilitate the construction.

“We lost the land some time ago, but fortunately, through the intervention of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, we have been granted a new facility,” noted Mr. Domfeh. “As new executives, we have been thinking through how to finance this project, and this gesture by Fidelity Bank has come at an opportune time.”

He assured that the funds would be used judiciously and pledged that the bank’s contribution would be permanently recognised when the press centre is completed.

“Fidelity have set the pace for this project; we truly appreciate this gesture, and we promise that the donation will be put to good use. Fidelity Bank’s name will be written in gold at the press centre,” he added.

The proposed press centre is expected to provide a dedicated and professional workspace for journalists in the Ashanti Region, serving as a hub for media engagements, training programmes, and collaborative activities aimed at strengthening the practice of journalism.

About the Training Workshop

The presentation of the donation formed part of a one-day financial literacy training programme organised by Fidelity Bank for journalists in the region.

Facilitated by the Chartered Institute of Banking, Ghana, the workshop sought to enhance journalists’ understanding of the banking and financial sector while building capacity for accurate and responsible financial reporting.

Participants received training on banking policies, regulatory frameworks, and practical approaches to interpreting financial statements to improve the quality of financial journalism.

GJA petitions IGP over threats to journalists covering Bawku conflict https://www.adomonline.com/gja-petitions-igp-over-threats-to-journalists-covering-bawku-conflict/ Wed, 28 Jan 2026 13:45:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2624729 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to take immediate action against individuals issuing threats to journalists covering the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The petition follows reported threats, particularly on social media, against JoyNews reporter Albert Sore and other media personnel operating in the conflict-affected area.

Speaking at a press conference, GJA President Albert Dwumfour condemned the threats, describing them as a serious danger to press freedom and democratic governance.

“Journalists covering conflict-sensitive environments must be adequately protected to perform their duties without fear or intimidation,” Mr. Dwumfour said.

He also renewed calls for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the earlier attack on journalist Carlos Calony.

The Association urged the police to swiftly identify and bring to justice the perpetrators behind the threats, warning that intimidation of journalists undermines the public’s right to timely, accurate, and credible information on national security issues.

GJA issues 14-day ultimatum to Fire Service over attack on journalist https://www.adomonline.com/gja-issues-14-day-ultimatum-to-fire-service-over-attack-on-journalist/ Wed, 28 Jan 2026 13:22:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2624719 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has given the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) a 14-day ultimatum to publicly release the findings and sanctions arising from the alleged assault on a journalist by some of its personnel.

The ultimatum follows growing concerns over increasing threats and attacks against journalists across the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, GJA President Albert Dwumfour described the attack on Class FM reporter Samuel Addo as a grave threat to press freedom and Ghana’s democratic governance.

He stressed that journalists must be able to carry out their constitutional duties in safety, without fear or intimidation.

Mr Dwumfour warned that failure by the Fire Service to act within the stipulated period would compel the Association to take drastic measures, including blacklisting the institution.

He also reiterated the GJA’s call for the immediate removal or reassignment of the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Raymond Ackah, stating that his conduct in handling the matter renders him unfit to remain in the position.

Additionally, the GJA is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of all persons involved in the assault, insisting that internal disciplinary measures alone are insufficient to address criminal acts against journalists.

GJA raises alarm over rising attacks and threats against journalists https://www.adomonline.com/gja-raises-alarm-over-rising-attacks-and-threats-against-journalists/ Wed, 28 Jan 2026 12:38:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2624696 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as an alarming surge in attacks, threats, and intimidation against journalists across the country, warning that press freedom and democracy are under serious threat.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, GJA President Albert Dwumfour cited recent assaults on journalists by security personnel.

These include the brutal attack on Class FM reporter Samuel Addo at Kasoa, an alleged police assault on UTV and Peace FM correspondent Michael Akrofi in the Eastern Region, and a reported military assault on Media General journalist Solomon Kwame Kanaluwe in Walewale.

While welcoming President John Dramani Mahama’s intervention that led to the interdiction of fire officers involved in the Kasoa incident, Mr Dwumfour criticised the silence of the Ghana National Fire Service leadership. He demanded the public release of investigation findings within 14 days.

The GJA also raised fresh concerns about death threats and intimidation against journalists covering the Bawku conflict in the Upper East Region. The association declared the area an “early warning zone” for press safety and called for sustained police protection for media personnel operating there.

The association demanded the arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators, stressing that internal disciplinary actions alone are insufficient. It further urged political parties, particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to guarantee the safety of journalists during upcoming internal elections.

Mr Dwumfour stressed that attacks on journalists are attacks on Ghana’s democracy, insisting that the GJA will pursue accountability both locally and internationally until justice is served.

GJA calls on government to overturn Court ruling restricting investigative journalist https://www.adomonline.com/gja-calls-on-government-to-overturn-court-ruling-restricting-investigative-journalist/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 09:04:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2613284 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged the government to intervene and overturn a recent court ruling it says threatens press freedom and investigative journalism in the country.

Speaking at the 3rd GJA Dinner Night, President Albert Kwabena Dwomfour expressed concern that the ruling effectively restricts the media by requiring investigative works to be subjected to scrutiny before publication.

According to him, the decision undermines the constitutional role of the media as a watchdog and could have a chilling effect on investigative reporting.

The event was attended by key state officials, including Deputy Attorney General Srem Sai and Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

The concerns follow a decision by the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Nana Brew, which placed a perpetual injunction on freelance investigative journalist Innocent Samuel Appiah.

The injunction restrains him from publishing or disseminating allegations against a private individual, Cynthia Adjei, after the court upheld a privacy breach suit against him. The court also awarded GH¢10,000 in costs against the journalist.

The ruling bars Mr Appiah from engaging in any investigative publication or commentary directly or indirectly related to the subject matter of the case across both traditional and digital media platforms.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Brew acknowledged that press freedom is guaranteed under the Constitution but emphasized that it is not absolute.

He stated that media freedom must be exercised within the limits of the law, particularly where the rights to privacy and reputation of individuals are concerned.

The judge further advised that allegations of criminal conduct uncovered through investigative work should be submitted to appropriate state institutions, such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Ghana Police Service, rather than being published without prior determination by authorities.

Bono East GJA urges better network infrastructure to boost tourism https://www.adomonline.com/bono-east-gja-urges-better-network-infrastructure-to-boost-tourism/ Mon, 22 Dec 2025 14:14:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2613033 The Bono East Region is home to several major tourist attractions, yet many remain underdeveloped and under-promoted due to infrastructural challenges.

In response, the Bono East Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is advocating for improved road networks and telecommunication services to unlock the region’s tourism potential and boost revenue generation.

Ahead of its official inauguration, the Bono East GJA has taken the lead in promoting ecotourism development in the region. The initiative also aims to honour Anas Sabit of Joy News, the Overall Best GJA Tourism Journalist of the Year and Secretary of the regional chapter.

During a familiarisation tour of key attractions, including the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary and the Kintampo Waterfalls, Bono East GJA President Frederick Antwi called on authorities and telecom providers to enhance network connectivity at tourist sites. He noted that poor mobile and internet services negatively affect visitor experiences, limit promotion, and ultimately reduce revenue.

Madam Eunice, Site Manager of the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, echoed these concerns, highlighting that persistent network challenges impact communication, security, and overall visitor satisfaction.

Meanwhile, Kintampo Municipal Chief Executive Isaac Donkor joined the journalists at the Kintampo Waterfalls, outlining steps the assembly is taking to promote ecotourism and improve infrastructure to attract more visitors.

The Bono East GJA believes that addressing infrastructure gaps, particularly in telecommunications and roads, will significantly boost tourism development and position the region as a major ecotourism destination in Ghana.

GJA demands Police update on attacks against journalists and anti-galamsey officials https://www.adomonline.com/gja-demands-police-update-on-attacks-against-journalists-and-anti-galamsey-officials/ Sat, 08 Nov 2025 19:39:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2597801 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged the Ghana Police Service to provide the public with a clear update on ongoing investigations into the recent wave of attacks on journalists and officials leading the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

Speaking at the 29th GJA Media Awards in Kumasi, the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to act decisively and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

“The GJA demands that the Ghana Police Service brief the nation on the progress of investigations and leaves no stone unturned in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all those responsible. We demand that briefing in the coming week, Mr. IGP,” Mr. Dwumfuor stated.

His comments follow a series of disturbing incidents involving violent attacks on journalists and anti-galamsey task force members in various parts of the country.

Mr. Dwumfuor referenced reports from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) indicating that enforcement teams had recently come under armed assault during operations to curb illegal mining.

“Recently, during a briefing, I listened to the EPA boss recount how galamsey operators, aided by armed men in uniforms branded as CIDs, attacked enforcement teams with heavy weapons,” he revealed.

The GJA President also condemned the attack on the head of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat (NAIMOS), describing it as a serious challenge to state authority and national security.

“The GJA strongly condemns the cowardly attack on the NAIMOS boss. This act is not only a direct assault on the hardworking officers leading the fight against the destructive menace but also a grievous affront to the authority of the state and the rule of law,” he declared.

This year’s GJA Awards, themed “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey,” emphasized the media’s essential role in defending public interest and promoting national development.

Mr. Dwumfuor explained that the theme reflected the pressing need for journalists to highlight and confront national challenges such as environmental degradation and insecurity.

“We believe the media will make the necessary impact to safeguard the future of Ghana,” he said, reaffirming the GJA’s commitment to responsible journalism, integrity, and the pursuit of justice.

The 29th GJA Media Awards recognized journalists who have demonstrated courage, innovation, and excellence, particularly in promoting peace, good governance, and environmental protection.

Manasseh Azure Awuni writes: Why I left the GJA https://www.adomonline.com/manasseh-azure-awuni-writes-why-i-left-the-gja/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 20:16:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596719 In 2017, I left the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and have since not been a member. I left because the association fought me for fighting corruption.

I had published an investigation that resulted in the cancellation of a $74 million fraudulent contract awarded to the Jospong Group.

The GJA President issued a press statement attacking my story. The press statement did not state anything wrong with the investigation, which was adjudged the overall best story in the 2018 West Africa Media Excellence Awards (WAMECA).

The GJA’s statement was concerned that a so-called profitable Ghanaian business was affected, saying such businesses should not be destroyed “in the name of investigative journalism.”

Last month, the GJA again offered its platform for a similar attack against The Fourth Estate, which had published a report on the KGL contract with the National Lotteries Authority (NLA). That contract diverted the income that should have been coming to the NLA to the private company, while the NLA gets only peanuts.

I am yet to see any rebuttal to the substance of The Fourth Estate report, but at the GJA’s award launch, the Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, said, among others:

“The tendency to undermine our own across the country is worrying. The default reaction to successful local champions is often suspicion rather than celebration. Why do we cheer foreign conglomerates but question the success of local ones?”

Of course, he mentioned The Fourth Estate and referenced the publication on the NLA-KGL contract.

This is unfortunate, and the GJA should not follow money and allow private businesses caught in accountability journalism to spread this tired and false narrative that seeking accountability for public resources means destroying local businesses.

Such false narratives incite the public against journalists and media houses doing accountability journalism. It paints the journalists as enemies of the state, enemies of Ghanaian interests.

I don’t remember the GJA awards ever being named together with a sponsor, but this year’s event goes by the joint name GJA/KGL Awards. Irrespective of KGL’s sponsorship package, its officials shouldn’t be given the platform to undermine the very journalism that the GJA awards were created to honour.

Besides, it is not true that Ghanaian journalists are against local businesses. There are thousands of local businesses that have been built with the support of the media. There are also so-called businesses that sprout overnight, connive with politicians to sign obscene contracts that are detrimental to the interests of the state.

To say that the media should not expose them because they are local businesses is like saying a thief or an armed robber who attacks you should be set free if he is a Ghanaian.

Exposing corruption or unconscionable business dealings is not synonymous with targeting Ghanaian businesses. I have been reporting on Zoomlion’s operations since 2013, but not once have I reported on its contracts with private companies.

If, for instance, a private bank signs a private with Zoomlion, it is that bank’s responsibility to ensure that Zoomlion delivers. If the bank decides to pay Zoomlion for no work done, that is the bank’s problem.

However, if a business enters into a contract that involves public funds, it should be prepared to account to the public. It should not see accountability as an attack on Ghanaian business. Being a Ghanaian business doesn’t mean corruption.

If KGL thinks the publication got any facts wrong, the company should point it out. The company has the right to a rejoinder. And they have other remedies.

Using a GJA platform to dampen the spirit of the few media houses doing accountability journalism with such false and sweeping claims is detrimental to journalism.

The GJA must resist corporate capture and act in the interest of its members and good journalism.

Ashanti GJA embarks on media tour to strengthen membership and foster collaboration https://www.adomonline.com/ashanti-gja-embarks-on-media-tour-to-strengthen-membership-and-foster-collaboration/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 19:58:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2595846 As part of efforts to strengthen its membership base and deepen collaboration within the media fraternity, the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has begun a media engagement tour across the region.

Led by the Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, and the Regional Secretary, Beatrice Spio-Garbrah, the executives on Monday visited several leading media organisations, including EIB Network, Pure FM, Akoma 87.9 FM, and Despite Media Group.

During the visits, the GJA executives held constructive discussions with Mr. Kojo Marfo of EIB Network, Mr. Kwame Luther King Adinkrah of Pure FM, Mr. Ransford Asare, Head of Station at Akoma FM, and Mr. Sampson K. Nyamekye of Despite Media.

The media leaders expressed confidence in the new GJA regional leadership and commended their proactive approach to strengthening professional standards in journalism.

They also called on the Association to initiate regular capacity-building and training programmes to enhance the skills of journalists in the region.

Discussions also touched on the welfare of journalists, with media managers urging the GJA to prioritize advocacy for improved professionalism and protection for practitioners.

Regional GJA Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh noted that the ongoing engagements form part of a broader agenda to mobilize and unite journalists in the region, while promoting ethical, responsible, and qualitative media practice.

“Our focus is to build a stronger professional community that supports, protects, and empowers journalists to deliver impactful journalism that contributes to regional and national development,” he said.

The Ashanti GJA leadership says the media tour will continue in the coming weeks to cover more media organisations and other partner institutions across the Ashanti Region, as part of efforts to rejuvenate the Association’s presence and visibility at the grassroots level.

GJA pushes for compensation for Latif Iddrisu after multiple assaults https://www.adomonline.com/gja-pushes-for-compensation-for-latif-iddrisu-after-multiple-assaults/ Sat, 06 Sep 2025 12:24:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575617 Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) president, Albert Dwumfuor, has appealed to President John Mahama to compensate journalist Latif Iddrisu, who has suffered two separate assaults while on duty.

Latif sustained life-threatening head injuries in 2018 after he was brutally assaulted by some police personnel at the CID headquarters.

More recently, he was attacked by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

According to the GJA, the assaults have left Latif undergoing prolonged treatment and therapy in California, USA. Despite occasional attempts to return to frontline reporting, he continues to struggle with severe pain and trauma.

Mr. Dwumfuor revealed that after a recent meeting with Latif, where he received a detailed briefing on his ongoing treatment and the protracted court case, the Association resolved to push for compensation.

“We want to appeal to you to compensate journalists who have suffered injuries in the line of duty. We have Mr. Latif Iddrisu who has been assaulted twice—first by the police, and then by thugs of the NPP,” Mr. Dwumfuor emphasised.

He commended President Mahama for his intervention following the recent assault at EOCO, which led to the arrest and prosecution of one of the perpetrators.

The GJA president also mentioned other journalists, including JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor and Ohemeng Tawiah, as deserving of compensation for attacks suffered in the line of duty.

Beyond individual cases, Mr. Dwumfuor renewed his call for stronger legislation to protect journalists, arguing that existing laws are too weak to deter attacks on the media.

In response, President Mahama congratulated the newly elected GJA executives and recalled his early days as a young journalist at the GBC newsroom.

He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring media independence and the safety of journalists, pledging to revive the Media Development Fund and work with the press to restore Ghana’s reputation as a model of press freedom.

Mahama expressed concern about Ghana’s decline in the World Press Freedom Index and stressed the importance of reversing the trend through concrete interventions.

Phase 2 of GJA Volta Press Centre project launched https://www.adomonline.com/phase-2-of-gja-volta-oti-press-centre-project-launched/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 10:42:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575218 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has launched the second phase of its Volta Press Centre project, marking another milestone in efforts to provide journalists in the two regions with a modern working environment.

The launch, held in Ho, brought together media practitioners, regional executives of the GJA, and stakeholders who pledged their support toward the completion of the centre.

Phase two of the project will focus on expanding office spaces, conference facilities, and resource rooms to enhance professional journalism practice in the region. Once completed, the centre is expected to serve as a hub for training, research, and press-related activities while also fostering collaboration among journalists.

Speaking at the event, Volta GJA Chairman, Harrison K. Belley, described the project as a “dream gradually becoming reality,” adding that the facility would not only raise the profile of the association but also provide a safe and enabling space for media work.

Mr. Belley noted that the project would ensure the sustainability of the Volta GJA and applauded the previous administration for working tirelessly to put up phase one of the facility.

He urged all members of the association in Volta to fully participate in ensuring that phase two is completed before May 3, 2026, when the World Press Freedom Day celebration will be marked. He also appealed to government agencies, corporate institutions, and individuals to support the initiative through funding and logistics.

Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, also commended the GJA for its vision, stressing the critical role of the media in promoting good governance, accountability, and development in the Volta regions.

“This is a great day as we begin the second phase of the Volta Press Centre. This centre is where the spirit of the press dwells—it represents our identity and legacy as journalists. We must all support this project to completion. I throw my full support behind it and entreat everyone to do the same so that the spirit of the media can have a permanent home and be properly recognized in the region,” he said.

Mr. Gunu backed his pledge with a donation of 100 bags of cement, a trip of chippings, sand, and GHC20,000, among other items, to support the project. He urged the GJA to ensure that the project is completed before World Press Freedom Day in 2026, so it can be commissioned as part of the celebration.

On his part, the immediate past Chairman of Volta GJA, Emmanuel Agbaxode, also pledged his support and appealed to members to show strong commitment to the project before seeking external assistance.

Other stakeholders, individuals, and corporate organisations have also pledged their backing for the timely completion of phase two of the Press Centre.

The Volta Press Centre project was initiated to give journalists a permanent home after years of operating without a central office. With phase two now underway, the association is optimistic about completing the project on schedule.

Akwatia by-election: GJA urges responsible reportage and safety assurances https://www.adomonline.com/akwatia-by-election-gja-urges-responsible-reportage-and-safety-assurances/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 19:44:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572815 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has raised concerns about the heavy military presence in Akwatia ahead of the parliamentary by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a statement on Friday, the Association reminded the security services that election security is primarily the responsibility of the Ghana Police Service, as mandated by the relevant Legislative Instrument, with the military expected to provide only backup support when necessary.

The GJA warned that the presence of masked security personnel in the constituency could create fear and panic among voters and undermine confidence in the electoral process.

It also issued a strong call to journalists covering the polls to uphold the highest ethical standards, urging accuracy, fairness, and balance in their reportage.

The Association further advised reporters to avoid conduct or language that might expose them to hostility, while cautioning media houses to equip their teams with protective gear and risk management guidance before deployment.

“We expect you to professionally broadcast or publish the news—don’t become the news,” the GJA told its members.

The Association appealed to political parties and their supporters to respect the work of journalists and avoid confrontations that could compromise their safety. It also held the security agencies, particularly the Police, fully accountable for protecting journalists on duty.

The GJA reminded the Ghana Armed Forces of its unfulfilled promise to release findings into the assault of JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony and his cameraman by a soldier earlier this year, insisting that the delay raises questions about the military’s commitment to accountability.

Reaffirming its stance, the GJA said, “Journalists are not combatants in the political contest; they are professionals carrying out a democratic duty to inform the public. Journalism is not a crime, and journalists must be treated as partners in democracy, not targets of threats or attacks.”

According to the GJA, Dr. Tenkorang-Twum declared during a recent interview that journalists who criticize nurses unfairly had been “marked” and would be “shown” whenever they visited public hospitals.

The association said these statements amount to intimidation and a direct threat to the safety of media practitioners.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, GJA President Albert Dwumfour demanded that Dr. Tenkorang-Twum retract the remarks and issue a public apology within five days.

Failure to do so, he warned, would compel the GJA to petition the National Media Commission (NMC), the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and international press freedom bodies such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Mr. Dwumfour also stressed that the association would hold Dr. Tenkorang-Twum personally accountable for any harm that befalls journalists in public hospitals.

He insisted that the comments—whether current or not—were unacceptable and risked eroding trust between journalists and health professionals.

“The safety of journalists is non-negotiable. Any attack on a journalist is an attack on democracy itself,” the GJA stated, vowing to pursue legal action if the threats are not withdrawn.

In a statement issued by the National Executive and signed by General Secretary Dominic Hlordzi, the GJA expressed pride in Asediba’s achievement.

The Association noted that it adds to his impressive list of honours, including the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling and multiple GJA awards.

The association praised Asediba for consistently demonstrating excellence, innovation, and a commitment to journalism that drives change, amplifies underrepresented voices, and supports national development. His recent recognition, the statement said, is “a real testament” to those values.

The GJA urged young journalists across the country to take inspiration from his career and aspire to the same level of professionalism. It further commended him for setting “an exceptional example” in upholding truth, fairness, and integrity in reporting.

Mr Domfeh secured victory in a rerun election on Friday, August 22, winning 20 out of 31 valid votes against Georgina Ama Ankomah, who polled 11.

The rerun followed irregularities in the June 30 elections, including breaches of GJA constitutional provisions and voter eligibility concerns.

Addressing journalists after his win, Domfeh described the outcome as the beginning of a “new dawn” for journalism in the Ashanti Region.

“A lot is expected of me and my team, and I can assure my colleagues that we will not disappoint. Within six months, the Ashanti GJA will experience real transformation,” he said.

He urged journalists in the region to remain united and rally behind him, stressing that his leadership would prioritize professionalism, accountability, and qualitative journalism.

The rerun follows a petition by his opponent, Georgina Ama Ankomah, who challenged the outcome of the first contest.

She argued that irregularities in the GJA voters’ register, particularly regarding the eligibility of some members, undermined the fairness of the process.

Her petition to the GJA’s Elections Dispute Resolution Committee was upheld, prompting the Association to order a re-run of the presidential race only, while results for the other executive positions remained intact.

In the initial election, Domfeh narrowly secured victory with 16 votes, edging out Mrs. Ankomah, who garnered 15 votes.

The re-run, although tense, reaffirmed his win with 20 votes against his opponent who secured 11 votes.

IGP assures journalists of protection ahead of Akwatia by-election https://www.adomonline.com/igp-assures-journalists-of-protection-ahead-of-akwatia-by-election/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 19:46:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569430 The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured journalists and media professionals that the police will not attack or obstruct them, particularly in the run-up to and during the Akwatia by-election.

He gave the assurance during a meeting between executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Police Administration in Accra on Wednesday, August 20.

Dr. Yohuno emphasised the critical role of the media in Ghana’s democratic process, stressing that the police service considers journalists as allies rather than adversaries.

“No policeman will attack you, we are here to protect you,” he affirmed. “It is our duty to protect you because, without you, nobody would know what is happening.”

He highlighted the importance of journalists in keeping the public informed, particularly during national events such as elections. According to him, media coverage ensures that people outside the electoral area can still follow developments in real time.

“Somebody might be at home and not in Akwatia, but they can see what is going on there better, thanks to you,” the IGP noted.

Dr. Yohuno further disclosed that police officers have been directed to exercise restraint and professionalism when dealing with journalists, especially those filming or documenting electoral activities.

“We’ve told our officers that the brothers and sisters holding cameras and phones during elections must be treated with moderation. Without them, people at home would have no idea what’s going on,” he said.

The IGP stressed that the police do not view the media as outsiders but as partners in safeguarding democracy. He also acknowledged the role of the media in shaping public perceptions and elevating the profiles of many public officials, including himself.

“We’ve passed the stage where we see the media as a separate group. They are part of us. Some of us wouldn’t have our names known without the media,” he remarked.

GJA commiserates with Asantehene and Asanteman on passing of Asantehemaa https://www.adomonline.com/gja-commiserates-with-asantehene-and-asanteman-on-passing-of-asantehemaa/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 09:09:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569193 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed its deepest condolences to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Royal Family, and Asanteman following the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

In a statement, the GJA described the late Queen Mother as a revered leader whose life embodied dignity, service, and devotion to the cherished traditions of Asanteman, and the unity of Ghana.

“She was not only a mother to the Asantehene but indeed a mother to Asanteman and Ghana,” the Association said.

The GJA noted that Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s leadership, rooted in compassion and wisdom, reflected the very essence of communication, which resonated with the core values of journalism.

The Association further assured the Asantehene and Asanteman of the solidarity of the Ghanaian media, pledging to honor her legacy by sharing the lessons of her life with future generations.

The National Executive of the GJA will join mourners on Thursday, August 21, 2025, for the one-week observance of her passing.

“Fare thee well, Nana Konadu Yiadom III. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.

Journalists must be protected to perform their duties safely – Senior Editor https://www.adomonline.com/journalists-must-be-protected-to-perform-their-duties-safely-senior-editor/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 20:04:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562129 Head of News and Current Affairs at Adom Brands, Multimedia Group Ltd., Martha Crensil Acquah, has asserted that the vital role of journalists in promoting truth, accountability, and democracy is often misunderstood and undervalued.

Speaking in an interview, Martha stressed the need for stronger protection and support for journalists in Ghana, noting that misconceptions continue to undermine the importance of their work.

“There has always been some negativity and misconceptions about journalists and the work we do,” she said. “But journalists play a very vital role and must be seen as very important.”

She highlighted the critical role journalists play in uncovering hidden truths, exposing corruption, and bringing to light issues that would otherwise remain unknown to the public.

“The work of the journalist is important at all costs. What is hidden, what is unknown, what is uncovered — all of this is revealed by journalists. If not for them, there would be total darkness about what is happening around us,” she emphasized.

“It means that if journalists are silenced, corruption and other wrongdoings in government and society will go unheard.”

Martha called on stakeholders — including the government, civil society, and the general public — to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of journalists.

“If there is something the public, government, and relevant stakeholders can do, they must do it to protect journalists,” she added. “The media must be safe, because once we are not safe, we cannot give our best.”

She also made a direct appeal to citizens, urging them to view journalists as partners rather than adversaries.

“If you see any media person or journalist anywhere, you must protect them at all costs,” she urged.

Martha warned that the absence of journalism would create a dangerous vacuum, depriving society of vital news and truths that directly affect daily life.

Her concerns were echoed by the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, who recently condemned an attack on a journalist, describing it as a grave threat to press freedom.

“The safety of journalists in Ghana is under serious threat,” Dwumfour stated. “This disturbing trend undermines confidence in our democracy.”

Other journalists also expressed frustration over the lack of respect for their profession.

“Journalists must be seen and treated with the same respect we give to judges, politicians, and other key professionals,” one journalist said.

He cited a recent Adom News report that exposed a hospital forced to use flashlights due to a lack of electricity. Following the broadcast, the facility received immediate attention and power was restored.

“This is the impact journalism can have. Without our report, that hospital would still be in the dark,” he stated.

The call is clear: for journalism to thrive and democracy to function, the safety and integrity of journalists must be prioritized and respected by all.

GJA threatens to boycott all police activities https://www.adomonline.com/gja-threatens-to-boycott-all-police-activities/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 17:04:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562081

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service to take decisive action against officers and civilians involved in recent assaults on journalists, warning of a nationwide boycott of police-related activities if the Service fails to comply.

Speaking at a press conference, GJA President Albert Dwumfuor demanded a public report on the police officer who allegedly assaulted GHOne TV reporter Kwabena Agyekum Banahene during the Ablekuma North rerun.

The officer was interdicted following the incident on July 11, 2025.

Subsequently, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed in a July 17 statement that the officer had been formally charged with assault. The Command further stated that it had obtained statements from complainants and witnesses to aid the ongoing investigations.

However, Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that both the officer and any civilians implicated in the attack must face immediate disciplinary action.

“We cannot continue to accept a culture of impunity against journalists. If, after seven days, we do not see concrete action, we will boycott all police-related activities and declare the Service as enemies of press freedom,” he cautioned.

He also expressed concern over the rising number of attacks on journalists in Ghana.

“Ghana typically records around 12 attacks annually, but in just the first seven months of 2025, we’ve already hit that number. This trend is alarming and unacceptable. Journalists are key pillars of democracy, and any attack on them is an attack on our collective freedom,” Mr. Dwumfuor added.

Name and shame within 7 days or… – GJA challenges GAF over assault on JoyNews journalist https://www.adomonline.com/name-and-shame-within-7-days-or-gja-challenges-gaf-over-assault-on-joynews-journalist/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 16:51:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562069 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern 7-day ultimatum to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following the assault of a JoyNews journalist and an eyewitness by military personnel at Spintex.

According to the Association, the GAF must publish the names, ranks, and photos of the soldiers involved in the incident or risk the GJA doing so independently.

The incident occurred during a demolition exercise at businessman McDan’s warehouse along the Spintex Road, where JoyNews’ Carlos Carlony and an eyewitness were allegedly attacked by soldiers while carrying out their duties.

At a press conference on Thursday, GJA President Albert Dwumfuor condemned the assault, describing it as a deliberate attempt to suppress information and intimidate the media.

“These actions are unjustifiable and undermine press freedom,” he said. “We are giving the Ghana Armed Forces seven days to publish the identities of the officers involved. If they fail, we will not hesitate to release their names, ranks, and photos on the front pages of major newspapers.”

The development has intensified calls for accountability and renewed debate about the safety of journalists in Ghana.

Attacks on journalists becoming one too many; 12 incidents recorded in 7 months – GJA https://www.adomonline.com/attacks-on-journalists-becoming-one-too-many-12-incidents-recorded-in-7-months-gja/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 07:20:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561710 President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, has condemned the latest attack on JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony at a demolition site along the Spintex Road in Accra, describing the increasing assaults on media practitioners as alarming and unacceptable.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following the incident on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Dwumfour stressed that the safety of journalists in Ghana is under serious threat, warning that the trend is undermining confidence in the country’s democracy.

“There is much to be done than just issuing statements. Over time, we have condemned the attacks and impunity against journalists—the people who promote our democracy. Yet, our security has been weakened,” he lamented.

According to him, the Association has already recorded 12 attacks on journalists since the beginning of 2025, a figure that equals the annual average from previous years, despite the year being only seven months old.

“Averagely, we record 12 attacks on journalists annually. But we are just seven months into the year, and we have already recorded 12. It means something is not right,” Mr. Dwumfour stressed.

He also criticised the involvement of state security officers in some of these attacks, stating that personnel funded by taxpayers are now turning their authority against the very citizens they are meant to protect—including journalists.

“The security personnel we pay with taxpayers’ money, whose uniforms we sew for them to protect us, are the ones attacking us now. Who is going to protect us?” he questioned.

Mr. Dwumfour announced that the GJA will address the media and the public on Thursday, July 31, to officially state its position on what he described as the rising and disturbing trend of attacks on journalists.

“Our eyes are still open. We will make our position clear, and we don’t care who is involved. It is becoming one too many,” he said firmly.

He further called on the National Security Coordinator to rein in officers accused of misconduct, expressing confidence that the Coordinator himself does not condone such behaviour.

“I know the National Security Coordinator does not support these things because he is a brother and friend, so I expect him to call his people to order,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.

He reaffirmed the Association’s resolve to protect press freedom in Ghana, adding, “We will not be intimidated. We remain resolute in discharging our duties.”

What Crime Has Kofi Adu Domfeh Committed? https://www.adomonline.com/what-crime-has-kofi-adu-domfeh-committed/ Mon, 28 Jul 2025 12:09:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560516 Almost a month after going to the polls to elect their regional executives, members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Ashanti region are yet to know when their officers will take office.

This is because a sore loser in the chairmanship position petitioned the national Election Committee to complain of an irregularity that was approved by her own agents and the Returning Officer in the election.

It should be stated that out of the four positions at the regional level, only that of the chairman was contested and the rest went unopposed, and it was a closely contested one which was won by Mr Domfeh of the Multimedia Group Limited by one vote.

Petition:
Following the petition by Georgina Ankumah, the loser in the election, the Election Committee decided to put on hold the swearing in ceremony of the chairman elect of the Ashanti region.

Re-run:
The Election Disputes Adjudicating Committee (EDAC) chaired by Zakaria Tanko came out with its recommendation and called for a rerun of the regional election in Ashanti Region because it believed that it was fraught with some irregularities.

The Committee said one voter who was registered to vote in Accra, voted in the Ashanti Region and due to the margin, it believed there should be a rerun.

The committee also noted that there were some irregularities and non-adherence to the rules of the association in the culmination of a supplementary list and “furthermore a voter who was registered to vote in Greater Accra Region was nonetheless allowed to cast her ballot Ashanti region.

“Given that the extremely narrow margin of victory-merely one vote-it is reasonable proposition that these irregularities could have impacted the outcome.”

Irony:
This conclusion and recommendation of the EDAC is quite unfortunate and questionable, particularly when there are more people who, going by EDAC, were allowed to vote in the region although their names appeared on different lists.

One can cite Justice Isaac Bediako of EIB media whose name appeared on the Ahafo list although he has spent his entire working life in the Ashanti Region.

There is also Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, a former National Media Commission Chairman who spent his working life in Accra but currently living in Kumasi.

These aforementioned names were all allowed to vote in the regional elections.

The agents of the two candidates, the returning officer of the Electoral Commission, E. T Donkor and the representative of the Election Committee in the region, Thomas Nsowah approved of them.

It is therefore very surprising that EDAC would recommend for a rerun when all parties concerned agreed to allow the so-called unqualified voters to cast their ballots and now turn around to contest the result because it did not go their way.

In any case, is EDAC telling us that the vote by that one voter was the ballot that made the difference and were the perceived or real irregularities the fault of Kofi Adu Domfeh or the mother association?

Definitely, it could not be caused by the contestants and if they were the fault of GJA why should Mr Domfeh be made to suffer the brunt?

Dead silence:
It should be noted that the recommendation of EDAC is just an advice to the election committee which should come out with a decision on whether it upholds the recommendation of EDAC or not.

This dead silence seems to lend credence to the perception that there is a clandestine machination by some elements within the national executive of the association to impose their favourite on the region.

However, EDAC seemed oblivious of the vote buying antics displayed by the petitioner on the voting day.

This is an issue that could be discussed in another forum and even the National executives are guilty of it.

Indictments:
Ashanti region was not the only region that had a supplementary list for the June 30 polls and to allow the EDAC recommendations to stand will be an indictment on the Election Committee and the GJA as a whole.

It is a clear affirmation that the entire election was fraught with irregularities and the rerun should be for the entire election and not just one region.

Meanwhile, the candidate the association is trying to impose on the members of the region has a questionable character and the national executive is aware of this and is still bent on ensuring that she becomes the regional Chairperson.

It should not be said that national Executive of GJA support members with questionable characters to lead to the association.

There are members in the region who are ready to testify that the said candidate collected dues from them but never accounted for them.

It is clear that EDAC made of people of repute made a bad recommendation or adjudication because one is tempted to believe that it tried to please a constituency within the national body.

Ablekuma North rerun: GJA condemns assault on journalists, demands justice https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-gja-condemns-assault-on-journalists-demands-justice/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:52:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554360 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on two journalists covering the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on July 11, 2025.

In a press statement, the GJA described the attacks as “brutal and unprovoked,” highlighting incidents involving Kwabena Agyekum Banahene of EIB Network and Salomey Nartey of JoyNews.

Banahene was reportedly slapped by a police officer while performing his duties, despite clearly identifying himself as a journalist. Nartey was assaulted by unidentified individuals.

“This egregious act is a direct assault on press freedom and a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” the GJA said.

The Association commended the Ghana Police Service for swiftly interdicting the officer involved but insisted on a thorough and transparent investigation.

It also urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure the prosecution of the officer to send a strong signal against such acts of impunity.

“The safety and security of journalists are paramount. Any threat to them is a direct threat to freedom of expression and the integrity of our democratic processes,” the statement added.

The GJA reaffirmed its solidarity with the affected journalists and pledged its support to ensure justice is served.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 29, the Committee expressed grave concern over what it described as a deliberate attempt to mislead members and erode confidence in the electoral process.

“The Committee urges all members to ignore this mischievous fabrication and rely solely on the official voters’ register, which bears the signatures of both the GJA General Secretary and Treasurer,” the statement said.

Members who are uncertain about their inclusion on the official list are encouraged to verify their status via the GJA’s official website or by contacting the Elections Committee directly.

To ensure security and order, the Committee announced that the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to all regional voting centres during the election.

“Any person or group attempting to disrupt the process will be swiftly removed from the premises by the police,” the Committee warned.

It also reminded members that valid identification is required to vote. Acceptable IDs include a Ghanaian Passport, Voter ID, or Ghana Card.

“Let us all work together to ensure a peaceful and credible election. May the best candidates win – and may the GJA be the ultimate winner.”

GJA Elections: Kofi Adu Domfeh seeks to lead Ashanti Region as Chairperson https://www.adomonline.com/gja-elections-kofi-adu-domfeh-seeks-to-lead-ashanti-region-as-chairperson/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 17:33:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541081 Environmental journalist and News Editor with the Multimedia Group, Kofi Adu Domfeh, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ashanti Region.

He has successfully filed his nomination to put himself up for contest in the upcoming 2025 GJA elections.

With over two decades of experience in the media landscape, Mr. Domfeh is widely respected for his dedication to socially responsive journalism, capacity building, and thought leadership in media.

His decision to run as Chairperson of GJA – Ashanti is rooted in a deep-seated conviction that journalism must be a catalyst for community transformation.

“Every community deserves the best of journalism; I believe in journalism that is ethical, transformative, and anchored in truth,” Mr. Domfeh remarked. “I am stepping forward to serve, not only to uplift the standards of our profession in the region but to position GJA Ashanti as a beacon of integrity, innovation, and inclusiveness,” he said.

As a seasoned communicator and champion of development journalism, Kofi Adu Domfeh brings a leadership style defined by empathy, accountability, and results-driven advocacy.

Free speech should not be criminalised – GJA https://www.adomonline.com/free-speech-should-not-be-criminalised-gja/ Sun, 25 May 2025 17:59:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538363 The General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Kofi Yeboah, has called for an end to the criminalisation of free speech in Ghana, describing it as inconsistent with the spirit and letter of the 1992 Constitution.

His comments come in the wake of the recent jailing of a blogger for publishing false news about the dollar, while the Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo, who made a similar public claim, has not faced prosecution. The incident has sparked renewed debate over Section 208 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which criminalises the publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm to the public.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Law on Sunday, he said the GJA opposes any attempt to criminalise free speech.

“Our position is that we cannot — and we should not — criminalise free speech,” Mr. Yeboah said.

“The example you gave, where a blogger was jailed for 30 days while an MP walked free for a similar offence, only confirms what we’ve always maintained: even where the law is applied, it is done selectively. Otherwise, why wouldn’t the MP also be arrested and prosecuted under the same law?”

He criticised what he described as the biased and selective application of the law, particularly by the police, whom he believes disproportionately target media professionals.

“In our humble view, if you look at the 1992 Constitution and interpret it as a whole, it leans strongly toward protecting and guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression.”

He cited Article 21(1)(a), which guarantees freedom of speech and expression, and Article 21(1)(f), which upholds the right to information.

Mr. Yeboah also pointed to Chapter 12 of the Constitution, which promotes media freedom, and Article 163, which enjoins state-owned media to provide fair opportunities for the presentation of divergent views and dissenting opinions.

“All these provisions are geared toward deepening democracy and encouraging civic engagement. If this is truly the aim of our Constitution, why then should we seek to silence free expression through criminal prosecution?”

He further argued that misinformation should be countered through civil remedies, public corrections, or regulatory sanctions, rather than punitive criminal action.

The time to act is now: GJA President urges IGP to end impunity in attacks on Journalists https://www.adomonline.com/the-time-to-act-is-now-gja-president-urges-igp-to-end-impunity-in-attacks-on-journalists/ Sat, 03 May 2025 17:38:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531288 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has issued a firm and urgent call to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take decisive action against the rising attacks on journalists in the country.

Speaking at the 2025 World Press Freedom Day celebration in Accra, Mr. Dwumfour described the persistent lack of justice for victims as a national failure that undermines democracy and threatens the integrity of Ghana’s media landscape.

In a strongly worded address during the event—held under the global theme “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”—Mr. Dwumfour said:

“We want to reiterate our call on the IGP that the time to act is now. The time to act is now. And Mr. IGP, for the last time, the time to act is now.”

His warning came against the backdrop of troubling new data from the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, which revealed a drop in Ghana’s global ranking.

The country fell from 50th position in 2024 to 52nd in 2025, with a sharp decline in the security indicator — sliding from 72nd to 86th within a year. According to the GJA’s internal records, there were 11 reported assault cases on journalists in February alone this year, with no prosecutions or sanctions against the perpetrators.

“These records are not good for us, especially in terms of economic security and legislative indicators,” Dwumfour said. “It also reinforces the need for us to intensify our efforts at promoting press freedom.”

He noted that while physical assaults on journalists attract more public attention, economic pressures and inadequate legal protections pose equally serious threats. The inability of the justice system to deliver accountability, he argued, contributes to a culture of impunity that emboldens further attacks.

Highlighting the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, Mr. Dwumfour stressed the GJA’s ongoing demand for justice.

“We have not been sleeping on the attacks against our members,” he said. “The time for justice, accountability, and deterrence is long overdue.”

The GJA president also acknowledged the presence of key political figures at the event, including the Minister in charge of Government Communication and the Minority Leader in Parliament, urging bipartisan support in the fight for media protection.

“The promotion of press freedom is not the burden of only media practitioners; it is the responsibility of all, because the lack of press freedom affects every aspect of our national life,” he said.

The event was marked by a solemn moment of reflection, as attendees observed a minute’s silence in memory of journalists who lost their lives or suffered attacks in the line of duty.

As Ghana navigates the growing influence of artificial intelligence on journalism, Mr. Dwumfour cautioned that press freedom must not be relegated.

“We shall continue to protect and promote press freedom even more than we have done before,” he added, noting that while the GJA remains committed to defending journalists, it will also not condone irresponsible practices.

GJA condemns attack on journalists by galamsey operators, demands swift justice https://www.adomonline.com/gja-condemns-attack-on-journalists-by-galamsey-operators-demands-swift-justice/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 17:58:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528035 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the brutal assault on three journalists in the Western Region by illegal small-scale miners, commonly known as galamsey operators.

The incident occurred on February 21, 2025, in the Breman-Adomanya forest, where the journalists were reporting on the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities.

According to Mr. Dwumfour, the assailants not only inflicted severe physical harm but also damaged the journalists’ equipment during the attack.

Describing the assault as “barbaric,” the GJA President called for swift and satisfactory justice for the victims.

He lamented the apparent disregard for the safety of journalists, despite their critical role in the national fight against illegal mining.

“It is unfortunate and indeed regrettable that in spite of the crucial role journalists and media practitioners are playing in the fight against galamsey, our welfare does not seem to be a priority to the authorities,” he stated.

Mr. Dwumfour noted that while the government, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has rolled out several interventions to curb illegal mining, the media has been excluded from these efforts, leaving journalists vulnerable.

“We regret to note that the media is missing in these interventions, which makes us more gullible and exposed to severe risk,” he added.

He noted that the Association plans to formally engage the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to express its concerns.

Additionally, Mr. Dwumfour stated that the Association intends to consult with the Ghana Police Service, particularly the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), to understand what measures are being taken to ensure the safety of journalists reporting from high-risk areas such as galamsey sites.

IFJ and GJA welcome arrest in Ahmed Suale murder case https://www.adomonline.com/ifj-and-gja-welcome-arrest-in-ahmed-suale-murder-case/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 16:00:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517579

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), in partnership with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has welcomed progress in ensuring justice for the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Daniel Owuusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arrested on March 19 in connection with the 2019 murder of Suale. He was remanded in custody by the Madina District Court, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 1.

The arrest marks a significant step forward in the long-running investigation into Suale’s killing, who was shot dead by unidentified individuals riding a motorbike in Madina, Accra, in January 2019.

In a press release issued on March 20, the GJA expressed hope that this breakthrough would bring justice for Suale and provide relief to media freedom advocates both in Ghana and internationally.

“We hope this breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owuusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad,” the GJA statement read.

Suale, known for his investigative work exposing corruption within Ghanaian football, was murdered in a case that sent shockwaves through the global media community.

The GJA has been closely monitoring the developments and committed to further engagement with authorities to ensure continued progress.

The GJA also emphasized its ongoing efforts to address assaults on journalists in Ghana, including the case of journalist Latif Iddrisu, which has been raised with the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

Anthony Bellanger, the General Secretary of the IFJ, praised the arrest as a critical step in the fight against impunity for crimes against journalists.

“This is a crucial step in our relentless struggle to end impunity for crimes committed against journalists. We call on the authorities of Ghana to continue their investigation into the killing of our colleague, Ahmed Suale, until the perpetrators are prosecuted and brought to justice,” Bellanger stated.

As the investigation continues, both the IFJ and GJA remain committed to ensuring justice for Suale and ensuring swift legal action for crimes against journalists.

GJA lauds police’s breakthrough in Ahmed Suale’s murder https://www.adomonline.com/gja-lauds-polices-breakthrough-in-ahmed-suales-murder/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 10:36:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516981 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The suspect, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody.

In a statement, GJA lauded the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for what it termed a “giant step” in efforts to unravel the murder.

“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement read in part.

The association expressed belief that the breakthrough was only the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad.

Expressing satisfaction with the development, GJA urged the Police not to relent in their efforts to apprehend all other persons connected to the crime.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement added.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to closely following the case and reiterated plans to proceed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if concrete results are not achieved by the end of March 2025.

The GJA also indicated plans to meet with police leadership for updates on the case and other unresolved assaults on journalists, including the case of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu, which is also being considered for submission to the ECOWAS Court.

GJA further disclosed that it has informed its international partners—the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)—about the arrest and ongoing prosecution.

Ahmed Suale, a member of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team, was shot and killed on January 16, 2019, in Madina, Accra.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who is said to be a friend, will reappear in court on April 1, 2025.

Although he has admitted to taking photos of Ahmed Suale, he has refuted claims of selling them to a politician who leaked them before his death.

GJA challenges court injunction on Esewani Community Radio closure https://www.adomonline.com/gja-challenges-court-injunction-on-esewani-community-radio-closure/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 14:44:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512017

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned an interim injunction issued by the Kade District Court, which orders the shutdown of Esewani Community Radio, Esawani Information Center, and Sir Plan Information Center in Kade.

The injunction, granted ex parte at the request of local traditional leaders, is set to last for ten days pending an Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) assessment of their noise levels.

In a press statement, the GJA described the ruling as legally flawed and a direct threat to media freedom, arguing that the plaintiffs failed to prove that the noise levels exceeded regulatory limits.

The Association also questioned the practicality of an EPA assessment when the stations are not in operation.

The GJA urged the affected stations to file for a Stay of Execution or seek redress in a higher court while calling on the Chief Justice to intervene.

It warned that such judicial actions could set a dangerous precedent for press freedom and impact the livelihoods of media workers.

The Association reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding media independence and resisting any misuse of state power to silence communication platforms.

PRESS STATEMENT ON AN ORDER OF INTERIM INJUNCTION ON ESEWANI COMMUNITY RADIO AT KADE GRANTED EX PARTE

The Ghana Journalists Association has sighted an Interim Injunction Order  granted Ex Parte by a Kade District court directing the Esewani Community Radio, Esawani Information Center and Sir Plan Information center  situated in Kade to cease operations until the Environmental Protection Authority assesses their noise permissible levels and grants them permission so to do.

The order issued by the court remains in force for ten days unless repeated on notice.

The plaintiffs in this Order for an Ex parte injunction are the Krontihene of Asuom one Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade, the Kyedomhene of Asuom Nana Deibour II and Abusuapanin Abosi Agyei.

The plaintiffs’ case is that the operation of the Esewani community radio  and the two information centers aforementioned has become a nuisance to the community due to the noise it produces and that,  excessive noise can lead to neurosis and nervous breakdown.

The Ghana Journalists Association, as a law-abiding institution respects the decision of the lower court but vehemently disagreese with the order granted.

The GJA has been in touch with the managers of Esewani Community Radio Station and has advised that their lawyers immediately file for a Stay of Execution or a Varying Order or an Order of Certiorari in a Higher Court.

The Ghana Journalists Association wishes to State that:

  1. It will not sit aloof and watch any state institution use its coercive power to shut down any medium of mass communication.
  2. That the Kade District Court on the face of its Order of Ex Parte Injunction erred in law because even though the plaintiffs could not demonstrate to the court that the level of noise pollution generated by the three mediums of mass communication is higher and above the permissible levels of noise by regulation, it went ahead and granted the injunction Ex parte.
  3. That the Order of an Interim Injunction directed a TEN DAYS closure of the media and at the same time directing the Environmental Protection Authority to assess its permissible noise level. The question is, how will the EPA assess the noise level of a media that is not in operation?
  4. That, in the adversarial justice systems like we have in Ghana, and considering the parties in the matter, the court should have put the defendants on notice in the worst case scenario. The GJA does not see the urgency in this case that leads to the granting of the Interim Injunction. And that the plaintiffs failed to prove to the cause proof of harm or likely of harm.
  5. That beyond the infringement of the citizens right to information, the economic right of staff of the station will be affected by this Injunction.
  6. That the decision of the court will cause irreparable damage to the community radio station considering the fact that it may have contracts with advertisers to be executed on air within the period of the closure.
  7. That we believe that, the court didn’t carefully consider the basic grounds of granting an injunction of such nature. i.e. the test of a prima facia case, balance of convenience and irreparable injury criterial.
  8. That, the decision of the Lower Court offends the letter and spirit of the Supreme Laws of Ghana, the constitution 1992. The guarantee of freedom for the media is one of the cornerstones of the Republican Constitution and that any attempt to deny such a fundamental freedom should be a source of worry to every democracy-loving citizen.
  9. That, Article 162 (3) provides that : “There shall be no impediments to the establishment of private press or media; and in particular, there shall be no law requiring any person to obtain a license as a prerequisite to the establishment or operation of a newspaper, journal or other media for mass communication or information”
  10. The GJA respectfully calls on the Chief Justice to take a particular interest in the matter and ensure that the judiciary and other state institutions do not arbitrarily use their coercive powers to undermine the constitution of Ghana.

Attached is a copy of the court order and the plaintiffs writ.

I will leave gov’t if… – Kwakye Ofosu says after GJA blames Mahama for assault on journalists https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-leave-govt-if-kwakye-ofosu-says-after-gja-blames-mahama-for-assault-on-journalists/ Wed, 19 Feb 2025 17:10:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2506469 Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama and Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that the government is responsible for recent assaults on journalists.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he assured that President Mahama’s administration would never target journalists over criticisms.

“No single journalist in this country will be attacked because they have spoken against the government. The day that happens, I will hear it and leave government because it won’t happen,” he said.

His comments come after the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfour, on Tuesday, February 18, strongly condemned the Mahama administration’s inaction over what he described as a rising number of attacks on journalists.

Mr. Dwumfour revealed that since the start of President Mahama’s administration, seven cases of assaults have been recorded, calling the situation “unprecedented.”

However, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu described the narrative as “most regrettable” and unfair to President Mahama and the government.

“Why would President Mahama even dream of attacking a journalist? Someone like Manasseh [Azure Awuni], despite his criticisms, Mahama still mentions his name during speeches and would never want to attack any journalist,” he stated.

He added that President Mahama is open to criticism and maintains a friendly relationship with his critics.

“The President will meet with the GJA President to further assure him on the matter. I want to emphasise that we will not harm any journalist,” Kwakye Ofosu assured.

GJA Ashanti condemns attack on 4 journalists at Council of State election chaos https://www.adomonline.com/gja-ashanti-condemns-attack-on-4-journalists-at-council-of-state-election-chaos/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 17:48:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503821 The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the attack of journalists during Tuesday’s Council of State election in the region.

A group of thugs purported to be supporters of one of the 12 candidates in the poll barged into the Regional Coordinating Council venue and disrupted the election process on Tuesday.

The thugs destroyed ballot papers and other voting electoral materials, ending the voting exercise abruptly.

Four journalists were physically assaulted in the raid and eventually hospitalized.

In a statement, the GJA-Ashanti described the attack as “vicious” and “unprovoked” thwarting reporters on ground from performing their duties on the day.

“Some ‘macho men’ believed to be linked to the ruling party, National Democratic Congress, caused a stir when they stormed the place and disrupted the exercise. They destroyed all the ballots just when the officials of the Electoral Commission were sorting the ballots,” read the statement signed by Kingsley E. Hope, Regional Chairman.

A complaint has formally been lodged at the police while the journalists receive treatment at various hospitals including Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

“This heinous act of violence is a reprehensible affront to press freedom and a stark reminder of the perilous environment in which journalists operate. The fact that this attack occurred in broad daylight, with impunity, is a damning indictment of the authorities’ failure to protect journalists,” the statement read.

The GJA is demanding that the perpetrators be brought to book as the violent attacks and intimidation on journalists have become recurrent.

“This trend must be halted, and those responsible must be held accountable. Attacks on journalists not only harm individuals but also erode trust in institutions and undermine the public’s right to information. We stand in solidarity with the victims and all journalists who face threats, intimidation, and violence in the pursuit of truth,” the statement read.

The statement added: “GJA will not be silenced, and we will continue to demand justice and accountability, and call on authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable”.

Governments and leaders worldwide have been urged to prioritize journalists’ safety and also protect the rights of media professionals to report freely and without fear of reprisal.

GJA seeks clarity on the removal of the Ministry of Information https://www.adomonline.com/gja-seeks-clarity-on-the-removal-of-the-ministry-of-information/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 18:25:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496464 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has raised concerns regarding recent changes in government structure while congratulating President Mahama on his election and Mr James Gunu on his nomination as Volta Regional Minister nominee.

Emphasising the vital role journalists and the media play in governance, the association now seeks to understand the rationale behind the removal of the Ministry of Information from the President’s list of ministries.

In a statement, the association said, “We are appealing for clarity from the President on the rationale for the removal of the Ministry of Information from his government portfolios. Our members, who are committed to upholding the principles of journalism, need to understand how these changes will affect media operations and governance.”

While the first Mahama administration merged the Ministries of Communication and Information, the current administration appears to have completely dissolved the Ministry of Information.

As a result, the association is calling for clarity on this policy shift.

In particular, there are concerns about the future management of state-owned media houses, such as the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

With no Ministry of Information in place, questions have arisen as to which ministry will now oversee the budgets and operations of these institutions.

Members working within these media houses are keen to know how these changes will impact their roles and the continuity of operations.

Additionally, there is a growing interest in whether the government plans to continue media development programmes from the previous administration, including the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme and the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of Journalists.

These initiatives have been essential in strengthening the media sector and ensuring journalists’ safety, and there is hope that they will not be discontinued under the new government.

While the appointment of a Minister of State for Government Communication may provide some clarity, the association is calling for a comprehensive and transparent response from the President.

The future of Ghana’s media, its development, and the safety of journalists depend on clear answers to these pressing questions.

Media brutalities: GJA calls on Mahama to act, gives two-month ultimatum https://www.adomonline.com/media-brutalities-gja-calls-on-mahama-to-act-gives-two-month-ultimatum/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 16:35:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496398 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on President John Mahama to urgently address the rising incidents of media attacks and brutalities.

He noted that despite the freedoms and rights guaranteed to the media under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, recurring attacks on journalists are tarnishing the country’s international reputation.

Mr. Dwumfour urged the executive, legislature, judiciary, and civil society organizations to join the fight against these assaults.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, he highlighted the brutal attack on Ohemeng Tawiah of the Multimedia Group Limited by a mob of illegal small-scale miners operating in the Offin Shelter Belt Forest Reserve.

According to him, Tawiah, who was leading a Joy News team to cover a police operation against illegal miners, was nearly killed in the attack.

A Joy News report indicated that Tawiah sustained head and chest injuries, twisted fingers, and multiple cuts on his body after surviving a machete attack, which appeared to be an attempt to cut off his right leg.

“Colleagues, this is what happened to a journalist working in the interest of the public and Mother Ghana; a journalist striving to protect our natural resources; a journalist ensuring that children are not born with deformities due to environmental contamination; a journalist protecting public health from the effects of illegal mining activities. And yet, we have all remained silent on this matter,” Dwumfour stated.

He further referenced the assault on Erastus Asare Donkor, also of Multimedia Group, which remains unresolved with little effort from law enforcement agencies.

On the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, the GJA has given the government a two-month ultimatum, ending in March 2025, to ensure substantial progress in the case or face escalation to the ECOWAS Court of Justice and other international bodies.

“Another case that has baffled the nation and the international community over the years is the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. It is unfortunate and disappointing that six years after his death, no arrest has been made. What is even more disheartening is the lackadaisical police investigation.

“In February 2024, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, revealed that his office had not received a prosecutable docket from the police five years after the incident. Just last week, Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, claimed he had provided information to the police regarding the suspected killers of Suale but threatened to reveal the suspect’s name if the police failed to act,” Dwumfour recounted.

According to him, A-Plus’ comments have raised serious concerns about the willingness of the police to resolve the case.

Given the eroding public trust in the police regarding the investigation and prosecution of suspects in the murder of Ahmed Suale, the GJA has resolved to take decisive action, including seeking redress through international legal channels.

“We are giving the Ghana Police Service until the end of March 2025 to present concrete findings on the case. We urge the Inspector-General of Police, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate, and the President to take a keen interest in this case,” he stressed.

Dwumfour also warned that the GJA would escalate the case of Latif Iddrisu, formerly of Multimedia Group, to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if the police fail to provide substantial updates by the end of March 2025.

Iddrisu was reportedly assaulted by unidentified police officers at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department while covering a demonstration by NDC supporters. The assault left him with a skull injury, and six years on, he continues to battle health complications.

“The police claim they cannot find evidence for prosecution and further assert that the CCTV at the crime scene was faulty on the day of the assault,” Dwumfour lamented.

Ahmed Suale murder: GJA vows to seek justice at ECOWAS court https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suale-murder-gja-vows-to-seek-justice-at-ecowas-court/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 08:33:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496167 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a March 2025 ultimatum to relevant authorities, demanding an update on the investigation into the slain journalist Ahmed Suale.

The Association has vowed to proceed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court in its quest for justice if its request is not granted by the set time.

GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, announced this course of action at a press conference on Wednesday.

“If by the end of March 2025, we have not seen or heard a satisfactory reaction to our demand, we shall proceed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice to seek resolution of this matter,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.

Similarly, GJA intends to pursue the brutal assault case of Joy News journalist Latif Iddrisu at the ECOWAS court.

“The Police claim they do not have or cannot find evidence for prosecution. They further claim the CCTV at the crime scene was faulty on that fateful day Latif was assaulted.

“The Police are saying since crime has no expiry date, anytime or any day they find evidence, they would initiate prosecution. We shall proceed to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to hear what they will also say on this case,” he noted.

After six years of Ahmed Suale’s death, Mr. Dwumfour said the pace of the investigation has been unsatisfactory.

“What is even more disheartening is the lackadaisical police investigations into the murder. You may recall the shocking disclosure made by the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in February 2024 that his office had not received from the Police any docket fit for prosecution or action on the murder of Ahmed Suale. This was five years after the murder of the investigative journalist,” he added.

The demand comes a few days after the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, threatened to expose the alleged perpetrator if the Police fail to provide an update on the case.

In a Facebook post, A-Plus revealed that he was invited to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters last year, where he provided crucial information about the case.

He alleged that a former government minister orchestrated the crime, citing a “highly credible” source he discussed with the CID director.

Bawumia demonstrated maturity and statesmanship in conceding defeat – GJA https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-demonstrated-maturity-and-statesmanship-in-conceding-defeat-gja/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 19:32:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482141 The Media Coalition Ghana has commended the Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for his exemplary display of “maturity and statesmanship” in conceding defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on behalf of the group on Tuesday, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour applauded Dr Bawumia for taking the gracious step of calling President-elect, John Mahama to congratulate him, even before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.

This act, Mr Dwumfour noted, demonstrates true leadership and commitment to the peace and unity of Ghana.

“This is indeed commendable,” he stated, adding that Dr Bawumia’s actions serve as a powerful example of how politicians should conduct themselves in the face of electoral outcomes.

The group also congratulated President-elect, John Mahama on his victory, urging him and his supporters to be measured and magnanimous in their celebrations to avoid exacerbating tensions.

At the same time, Mr Dwumfour called on those disappointed with the election results to exhibit restraint and avoid confrontations, drawing inspiration from D. Bawumia’s calm and conciliatory approach.

Expressing concern over reports of vandalism and destruction of state property in parts of the country, the Media Coalition Ghana strongly condemned these actions, stating that such behaviour undermines national stability and wastes taxpayers’ resources.

The Association called on the leadership of both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to actively encourage their supporters to act responsibly during this critical period, stressing the importance of preserving peace and unity in the nation.

“We condemn this act of vandalism and call on the perpetrators to stop it immediately. We can’t waste taxpayers money. It is our money. If you destroy it, they will use the same money, to bring it back to its normal existence,” Mr Dwumfour stated.

The group urged Ghanaians to draw lessons from Dr Bawumia’s example of maintaining peace and work together to uphold the nation’s democratic values.

GJA president condemns attacks on journalists during 2024 election https://www.adomonline.com/gja-president-condemns-attacks-on-journalists-during-2024-election/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 06:13:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480872 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, has raised concerns and condemned attacks on some journalists during the 2024 general election.

Mr Dwumfour particularly condemned the military’s involvement in the electoral process, despite assurances that they would not be deployed.

The GJA President was speaking at a press conference on Saturday, December 7.

He emphasised that it is the responsibility of journalists to carry out their constitutional duties and pledged commitment to address excesses.

“Some incidents involving the military have occurred. We have seen visuals of military personnel in uniform at polling stations, the very locations where they were barred from going,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour also condemned the shooting incidents at Nyankpala in the Northern Region, and Ahafo Ano constituency in the Ashanti Region.

He expressed concern about the potential dangers faced by journalists in such volatile environments, recalling incidents in the 2020 elections.

“When such things happen, there’s a high tendency that journalists may be affected. In 2020, there was an incident at Ablekuma Central where one of our own, Pius Asiedu, a student journalist, was severely injured while performing his role to inform and educate the public. Pius Asiedu has already undergone three surgeries and has not yet recovered,” he explained.

Mr Dwumfour reiterated the GJA’s concern for the safety of its members during the election period, urging the security forces to remain vigilant and ensure the protection of journalists during and after the elections.

GJA invites media to cover election-related activities at Press Centre https://www.adomonline.com/gja-invites-media-to-cover-election-related-activities-at-press-centre/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 11:43:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2479483 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says it has designated the Ghana International Press Centre (GIPC) as a hub for press conferences on election-related matters.

This initiative, part of the GJA’s efforts to promote credible and successful elections, is aimed at providing a central and convenient location for political actors and the media during the electoral period.

In a press release issued by the General Secretary of the GJA, Kofi Yeboah, the Association announced that the Gifty Afenyi Dadzie Conference Hall at the GIPC will be available for political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to hold press conferences.

The GJA therefore encouraged media houses to station news teams at the Press Centre to ensure comprehensive coverage of these engagements.

Additionally, the GJA revealed plans to establish a National Media Collation Centre (NMCC) at the GIPC. This facility will be used to collect and collate election results, with projections displayed on giant monitors.

The NMCC aims to serve as a reliable source of information for the media, political actors, and the general public.

“The GJA is committed to facilitating credible elections, and this initiative underscores our role in ensuring transparency and accessibility during this critical period,” the release stated.

The Association expressed confidence in the project’s ability to foster productive interactions between political actors and the media, ultimately contributing to peaceful and credible elections.

Media houses have been encouraged to fully utilise the resources at the GIPC and participate actively in the activities planned by the GJA.

GJA observers ready to monitor 2024 elections https://www.adomonline.com/gja-observers-ready-to-monitor-2024-elections/ Mon, 02 Dec 2024 17:33:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2478188 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has announced that members of the Association have been accredited as media personnel and election observers for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Mr. Dwumfour said these accreditations would allow GJA officers to visit any polling station across the country to observe the elections.

“We have media accreditation and observers’ accreditation, which entitles any GJA officer to visit any polling station to observe the elections,” he stated.

Mr. Dwumfour confirmed that, the GJA would have observers in every constituency, ensuring widespread monitoring throughout the country.

He added that these observers would not only be present to monitor the process but also to provide real-time election results.

“The volunteers will not only be there to monitor but also to report the results as and when they receive them,” he said.

The GJA President further revealed that, the Association is setting up a national media collation centre in collaboration with several partner institutions to ensure the smooth and safe running of the election process.

“We are setting up a system to ensure the elections run smoothly and safely,” Mr. Dwumfour explained.

This collation centre, he noted will also serve as a central point for political parties to address the media.

He urged political parties to bring any important information directly to the press centre rather than calling individual media houses.

“If any political party wants to hold a press conference, they don’t need to call individual media houses. They can come to the press centre to address the media,” he added.

Mr. Dwumfour also disclosed the growing role of the GJA under the current leadership, noting that the association is now widely recognized as the “fourth estate of the realm.”

He encouraged journalists to maintain professionalism throughout the election period, urging them to be vigilant and ethical in their coverage.

The GJA President also praised the EC for listening to the GJA’s concerns and granting the association observer accreditation.

“The EC has done well to listen to us and bring the GJA observer accreditation,” he concluded.

Election 2024: GJA must be applauded for scepticism on provision of police liaison officers to selected media houses https://www.adomonline.com/election-2024-gja-must-be-applauded-for-scepticism-on-provision-of-police-liaison-officers-to-selected-media-houses/ Sat, 30 Nov 2024 10:53:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477553 “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts”

The press conference convened by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and addressed by its President, Albert Dwumfour, is a shining example of the scepticism with which every patriotic citizen and organization should take the proposals and seemingly protective overtures extended to them by heads of public institutions who have been planted by the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for purposes of doing their bidding during this year’s elections. The alertness and inquisitiveness exhibited by the GJA in questioning the real intention behind the decision by the Ghana Police Service to provide liaison officers at various media houses during the December 7 elections after a meeting initiated by and held at the Ghana Police Headquarters with selected editors without the knowledge of the GJA is an example to be emulated by patriotic citizens cherishing their fundamental rights to privacy and liberty from unnecessary state surveillance and interference.

The words of the President of the GJA in the exercise of rational optimism in considering the proposal of the Ghana Police Service during this election period are worth quoting for the sake of the reader who might not have read it already. Speaking on behalf of the GJA, he said, “One of the key issues is the promise made by the Police Administration to provide police media liaison officers at media houses for protection. While appreciating the initiative by the Police Administration to ensure the safety and security of media practitioners in the electioneering, there are some pertinent concerns regarding the initiative by the Police. First, is it a strategy to interfere with the work of the media? Is it a ploy to leak information from media houses? Which media houses have the Police enlisted to detail its media liaison officers to? We can see some dark clouds surrounding this initiative by the Police and answers to these questions will clear the sky.”

The Ghana Police Service would not have been selective and overlooked extending an invitation for such an engagement to the Media Coalition as the professional umbrella body of the media industry in Ghana representing the interests and concerns of media practitioners and media houses in Ghana if the invitation and proposals were actuated by the national interest and not a politically partisan election agenda under the smokescreen of impartial policing. Colonel Festus Aboagye calls the scepticism exhibited by the GJA to the proposals by the Police Administration over the heads of the GJA as the professional umbrella of media professionals an exercise in objective pessimism in his article “Democracy’s dangerous delusion: How Ghana’s electoral peace narrative masks growing violence” published on 3news yesterday, 28 November 2024 which every patriot should read.

This writer should be the first person to ascribe good intentions for any decision coming from the Ghana Police Service by virtue of his long association with the service as the Deputy Attorney-General and Member of the Police Council from 1989 to 7 January 2001 representing the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, as a Minister of the Interior and member of the service council, concurrently the Minister responsible for the Security and Intelligence Agencies, and as an Attorney-General and Minister of Justice who worked closely with several Inspectors-General of Police. Unfortunately, this writer has followed with disgust in the last seven years and nine months the politicization of appointments in both the higher and lower echelons of the Ghana Police Service by the incumbent government as part of the President’s election-winning long game for his anointed successor, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who has also been the Chairman of the Police Council during this period.

The Bugri Naabu leaked tape which surfaced on 11 July 2023 involving a prominent police commissioner and some leaders of the governing New Patriotic Party allegedly plotting to remove the IGP exposed the politicization of the Ghana Police Service, the lobbying and manoeuvring among the top ranks of the Police Administration, especially when limited positions are available. The desire of the top ranks of the service to be appointed the IGP and the subsequent scheming to replace the sitting IGP has been endemic in the Police Service. Bugri Naabu, a former powerful Regional Chairman and now a respected elder of the NPP government, demonstrated in his evidence at the Parliamentary Committee that his real interest in running the stint operation was to protect the current IGP and the Chairman of the Police Council, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the anointed successor of the owner of Ghana’s election-winning long game, President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In my published article: “The ‘Dampare must go’ Leaked Tape Recording is Diversionary for the Long Game” dated 15 July 2023, I stated and supported my contention that the current IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare was handpicked for the position of IGP on grounds of proven loyalty to this Government. I also stated that “I know as a matter of fact that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who chairs the Police Council and chaired the Council meeting which formally recommended Dr. Dampare’s appointment to the President was a staunch supporter of Dr. Dampare, long before the office of IGP became vacant.” I admonished further with objective pessimism that: “The leakage of the tape recording has achieved its objective because the NDC in particular, other opposition political parties, and security and intelligence operatives have diverted their attention to defending and extolling the virtues and perceived neutrality of the IGP. IGPs do not win elections and can scarcely influence the polls. What an IGP can and might do is to position Regional, Divisional, District, and Station Commanders who will control their men at the polls and relax their security alertness and surveillance on election day. Even such a move in a national election is not without hazards for the IGP as some Commanders may give him out to the other side. The Assin North constituency by-election cannot be used as a yardstick for measuring the neutrality of the Ghana Police Service in the coming national elections in 2024.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo’s anointed successor and poodle, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not only the Chairman of the Police Council, he is also the Chairman of the Armed Forces Council who knows what he has stepped on to boast that he is winning the 2024 presidential elections just as the President himself has similarly boasted publicly. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has also positioned himself as the founder of digitalization in Ghana without informing the unsuspecting public of the downside of digitalization as a cheating government Orwellian Big Brother intelligence gathering and surveillance tool usable for selfish election interference by public institutions. How did Dr Bawumia get the telephone numbers and birthdays of several Ghanaians upon whose privacy he has been intruding with SMS, if not from our digitalised Ghana Cards? The other contesting candidates for the presidency on 7 December 2024 do not have that cheating advantage.

Consequently, when a public institution closely associated with an incumbent Vice-President contesting as a candidate to be the President of Ghana meets selected editors of media houses, the patriot has every reason to raise the alarm and alert the electorate to possible discreet interference with the vote under the colour of discharging legitimate official duties. Where was the then incumbent IGP when the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election fatalities, and the 2020 Techiman South Constituency election day fatalities, took place in the name of free and fair elections under this government? The only guarantee that it not happen again is citizens’ alertness and objective rationality in asserting the sovereign power of We-the-People to ensure that our votes count without any politically motivated police surveillance before, on, and after election day.

Right now, I can report, as an aside, that between 11: 00 hours yesterday morning, 28 November 2024, and this afternoon gunfire is being exchanged in the Bawku township in the fratricidal chieftaincy and elections-related conflict deliberately mismanaged by the government during this election season with no intervention or patrols by the police and other security agencies. Three eligible voters are reported dead with the government supervising the day’s fatalities and mayhem because the votes in the six constituencies in the traditional area do not historically favour this government’s Presidential and Parliamentary candidates at elections.

I wish to repeat what I wrote on 14 July 2023 about the mandatory duty demanded of patriotic citizens by the 1992 Constitution for the impending 2024 elections which rhymes now more than ever before. I concluded my article by stating that: “Free and fair elections are the lifeblood of any democracy. I believe that the leaked recorded tape has achieved the opposite of what it intended by alerting patriotic citizens to the fact that no matter who is IGP everybody needs to be vigilant to ensure that the 2024 election is not captured by any President’s long game …. The vigilance of a patriotic citizenry is the truest bulwark against long games and election rigging come 2024. Let us defend the 1992 Constitution. Assalamu Alaikum!”

I invite all patriotic citizens and genuine defenders of the 1992 Constitution to join me in appreciating the selfless boldness exhibited by all of the members of the Media Coalition, the professional umbrella bodies of the media industry in Ghana who represent the interests and concerns of media practitioners and media houses, in standing up to the decision of the Police Administration that excluded them, for whatever reason, from the meeting with selected editors of media houses. As we count the remaining one week towards 7 December 2024 all lovers of free, fair, and transparent elections supervised by independent and impartial public institutions should remain more vigilant than ever before. GJA, Ayekoo, for putting Ghana First!

2024 Polls: The interests of journalists will not be compromised – GJA President https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-the-interests-of-journalists-will-not-be-compromised-gja-president/ Fri, 29 Nov 2024 10:57:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477239 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfuor, has pledged to safeguard journalists’ access to cover the December 7 elections amidst concerns over restrictions outlined by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The EC had issued a memo limiting media access at constituency collation centres to eight organizations, sparking public outcry and calls for a review of the directive.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that journalists play a crucial role in ensuring transparency in elections, noting that any restrictions could exacerbate existing trust issues with the EC.

“Journalists are the eyes and ears of Ghanaians. Restricting their access distorts the flow of information and can lead to misinformation. We’ve engaged the EC alongside stakeholders like GIBA to resolve this matter,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfuor assured journalists that the GJA is pushing for a comprehensive proposal that allows general polling station accreditation to extend to constituency collation centres.

He also revealed ongoing discussions with the EC to refine the accreditation process, ensuring no journalist is left out.

“We will present our proposals to the EC today and will keep the public informed about further developments. Our priority is to ensure that the interests of journalists are not compromised,” he assured.

The GJA has called on journalists to remain patient as it works to secure unfettered access for comprehensive election coverage.

EC engages GJA, GIBA on media access to collation centers https://www.adomonline.com/ec-engages-gja-giba-on-media-access-to-collation-centers/ Wed, 27 Nov 2024 10:41:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2476313 The Electoral Commission (EC) has responded to growing concerns from media stakeholders following its directive to limit media access to constituency and regional collation centers for the 2024 general elections.

The directive, which caps media representation at eight outlets per constituency collation center and twelve at regional collation centers, has drawn significant criticism from various media groups.

The EC explained that the measure aims to maintain order during the collation process but has raised concerns about transparency and inclusivity.

In a memo to its district and regional staff, the EC outlined a quota system for accrediting media outlets, sparking a wave of feedback from journalists and broadcasters.

Addressing the concerns, the EC announced on Wednesday, November 27, that it is in discussions with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) to address the issue.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to finding a balanced solution that ensures both transparency and orderly operations at collation centers.

“As a listening Commission, we are engaging with the leadership of the GJA and GIBA on the issue and trust that we will arrive at an arrangement that is both workable and acceptable,” the EC stated.

The EC assured stakeholders of its dedication to transparency in the electoral process, emphasizing that media access to all constituency, regional, and national collation centers is a priority.

However, it reiterated the need to limit the number of persons present at these centers to maintain peace and order during the collation of results.

“The Commission is keen on ensuring the highest level of transparency in its operations, hence the opening up of all its Constituency, Regional, and National Collation Centers to the Media. In doing so, the Commission is mindful of the need to ensure an orderly and peaceful process at all the Collation Centers, hence the quotas on the number of persons who can access the Collation Centers at any given time,” the statement read.

The EC expressed optimism that ongoing dialogue with the GJA and GIBA would result in an agreeable solution, enabling media partners to effectively carry out their roles without compromising the integrity or efficiency of the collation process.

2024 Polls: Fact-checking is crucial – GJA President https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-fact-checking-is-crucial-gja-president/ Fri, 15 Nov 2024 10:22:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2472180 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfuor, emphasized that fact-checking is an indispensable aspect of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during a fact-checking training session for journalists at the Spanish Embassy, Mr. Dwumfuor urged the media to remain vigilant against misinformation and prioritize accuracy.

“Fact-checking is critical. Verifying information before sharing it is especially important during elections. Journalists must be cautious of sources with vested interests and biases,” he noted.

He further highlighted the importance of leveraging reputable fact-checking organizations and independent media outlets to discern fact from fiction.

“Effective fact-checking is non-negotiable as we approach the December 7 elections,” he stressed.

Regarding the safety of journalists, Mr. Dwumfuor called for proactive measures to ensure their protection before, during, and after the polls.

“As the head of the GJA, my primary concern is the safety and well-being of journalists throughout the electoral process. We have a constitutional responsibility to shape the election narrative responsibly, ensuring voters are well-informed to make sound decisions,” he stated.

The Spanish Ambassador to Ghana reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting free and fair elections in Ghana.

Mr. Dwumfuor also expressed his gratitude to the Spanish Embassy, Casa África, Maldita.ES, and Newtral for their support in organizing the training, which he believes will bolster Ghana’s democracy.

The two-day fact-checking workshop, organized by the GJA in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy and Casa África, provided critical skills to journalists to combat disinformation effectively.

Prosecute assaliants of Erastus Asare Donkor – GJA https://www.adomonline.com/prosecute-assaliants-of-erastus-asare-donkor-gja/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 10:52:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463428 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for the swift prosecution of those responsible for the brutal assault of Erastus Asare Donkor, an award-winning journalist with the Multimedia Group, and his colleagues, while they were on assignment.

The GJA condemned the attack in a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, urging the police to expedite the arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in the incident.

In addition to demanding justice for the journalists, the GJA has also called for the immediate suspension of Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited’s operating license.

The Association expressed deep concern over the environmental damage caused by the mining company and has urged both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minerals Commission (MC) to take immediate action to investigate the company’s operations.

Background of the assault

The incident occurred last Sunday in Asumenya, a community located in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, where the Multimedia Group crew was investigating the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities.

The team, led by Erastus Asare Donkor, was covering the devastation of farmlands and water bodies in the area.

Their reporting focused on the adverse effects of the mining operations of Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited, a company linked to Adelaide Tettey as a shareholder, according to the GJA.

While filming, the journalists were accosted by armed thugs allegedly protecting the mining site. The assailants, brandishing pump-action guns, forcibly seized the crew and their equipment.

The armed men then transported the journalists to a remote forest, where they subjected them to a brutal assault. Erastus Asare Donkor and his team suffered severe injuries, including swollen eyes and ear trauma, before being abandoned in the secluded area.

The Multimedia crew managed to report the incident to the Manso Edubia Police Station, where they were provided with medical forms and later sought treatment at Agroyesum Hospital.

The journalists reported that their attackers claimed to be acting on orders from the owner of Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited.

Police response and ongoing investigation

Following the report filed by the victims, the police have arrested three suspects linked to the attack.

The GJA has applauded the swift response from law enforcement and praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for his interest in the case.

However, the Association stressed that the investigation must not stop with these arrests, urging the police to apprehend and prosecute all the individuals involved in the attack.

East Legon accident: Arrest and prosecute attackers of journalist – GJA to Police https://www.adomonline.com/east-legon-accident-arrest-and-prosecute-attackers-of-journalist-gja-to-police/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 09:33:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461668

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on Murtala Inusah, a court correspondent for EIB Network, by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The attack reportedly happened on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Accra High Court.

Bishop Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, were in court following a tragic car accident involving their 16-year-old son, Elrad Amoako, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals at East Legon.

While covering the case, Murtala Inusah, who was wearing his Judicial Press Corps ID badge, was attacked by sympathizers unhappy with his filming of the proceedings.

As a result of the attack, Mr. Inusah lost both his phone and his ‘good health’.

In a statement released on Thursday, the GJA described the assault as “devilish” and urged the police to swiftly arrest and prosecute the attackers.

“The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemns in the strongest terms the brutal assault on EIB Network court correspondent Murtala Inusah by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. This senseless attack left Mr. Inusah, a Legal Affairs Correspondent, with injuries to his fingers and severe bodily pain. We have also been informed that a court warrant officer who tried to assist him was likewise assaulted, an act we equally condemn without reservation.”

The GJA further called on the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they face justice.

They also appealed to the Judiciary to impose stringent punishments if the assailants are found guilty.

According to the GJA, Murtala Inusah has already lodged a formal complaint at the Ministries Police Station, and the necessary documents have been submitted.

They urged the Police to expedite their investigation.

The GJA reiterated its stance that such acts of violence against journalists and law enforcement officers performing their duties must be met with the full force of the law.
