]]> Stonebwoy responds to controversy over GIMPA certificate https://www.adomonline.com/stonebwoy-responds-to-controversy-over-gimpa-certificate/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 11:55:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436848 Ghanaian dancehall and afrobeats musician Stonebwoy has addressed recent claims suggesting that his recently acquired GIMPA (Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration) certificate was gifted to him rather than earned.

The allegations were made by an individual who claimed to be a classmate of Stonebwoy, asserting that the musician was rarely seen attending classes.

In response, Stonebwoy firmly dismissed the claims, urging Ghanaians to ignore what he called a “false narrative.”

He explained that GIMPA is a reputable institution where students, regardless of their status, must work hard to earn their degrees.

“GIMPA isn’t a school that individuals or popular people will easily be accorded marks for attendance’ sake,” Stonebwoy stated, emphasizing that he earned his Second Class Upper degree through “blood, sweat, and tears.”

During an interview on GTV, Stonebwoy further expressed his frustration with the rumours, attributing them to a “poverty-stricken mentality” and a “failure mentality.”

Additionally, he defended his academic efforts, noting that he attended evening classes due to his schedule, which may have contributed to the misconceptions.

“I couldn’t have done the morning, so I was in evening school, that’s why I love GIMPA for how you can get it done,” Stonebwoy said, adding that the institution has measures like cameras in exam halls to ensure integrity.

He used the national platform to denounce those spreading the rumours, calling them out for attempting to tarnish his achievement.

Nonetheless, Stonebwoy climaxed his statement by expressing his satisfaction with earning his degree and urged others to focus on inspiring and educating rather than spreading baseless accusations.

This comes after he graduated from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) with a master’s degree in Public Administration on July 25, 2024.

The Afro Dancehall star encouraged musicians and others to pursue education early rather than waiting until the end of their careers.

“When you have the chance to educate yourself formally and gain more knowledge, you should seize it to show the world,” he said. Stonebwoy acknowledged the challenges of balancing education with other responsibilities but maintained that nothing is impossible. “Nothing is that easy and nothing is that difficult. Once it’s not impossible, then it’s achievable. I think that’s what I just proved,” he added.

Stonebwoy congratulated his fellow graduates and expressed hope that his journey would inspire others to pursue their educational goals. “If you find the opportunity to educate yourself and learn more, grab it, and don’t wait until you finish your career before you start your education.

This will inspire people who want to educate themselves. Everything is education, whether formally or informally, so let’s grab it and be inspired,” he concluded.

The graduation ceremony was a celebratory event, with Stonebwoy’s family and friends in attendance, including fellow musician Criss Waddle, who arrived in a Ferrari to show his support. Stonebwoy’s speech and accomplishments serve as a compelling reminder of the value of education and personal development.

Businessman nabbed after absconding with GIMPA SRC money https://www.adomonline.com/businessman-nabbed-after-absconding-with-gimpa-src-money/ Mon, 11 Oct 2021 09:05:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2026616 A businessman who absconded with Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Students Representative Council’s (SRC) ¢45,000 six years ago, has been arrested by the Police.

Prince Elorm Dor is said to have collected ¢45,000 out of ¢60,000 meant for the production and supply of 2014 diaries, key holders, and pens for the SRC.

He was put before an Accra Circuit Court on a charge of defrauding by false pretences.

But, before the court, presided over by J. A. M. Ahmed could pronounce judgment, he absconded from the jurisdiction.

The Court sentenced him to a prison term of 36 months in absentia and he was ordered to refund the ¢45,000 to the SRC.

However, when he resurfaced to get married to his lover on October 2, this year, the Police nabbed him so he could serve his prison term.

Dor’s sentence was handed down on October 12, 2016.

Prince Elorm Dor is said to have defrauded Benjamin Essuman, then President of GIMPA SRC, and the complainant in the matter.

Dor promised to provide the SRC with 2014 customised pens and diaries hence he took ¢45,000 from the complainant.

The accused, now a convict, provided the SRC with a proforma invoice which indicated that the items would cost about ¢60,000.

Police say the proforma invoice was in the name of Dor-Consult.

Following series of meetings, Dor made the Complainant and his colleagues believe that the production was being done in China and he needed an advance payment so the souvenirs would be produced and supplied on time.

On January 24, 2014, the complainant paid ¢45,000 to Dor.

The Court in its judgment on October 12, 2016, held that by Accused representation, he induced the Complainant to part with ¢45,000 when he had no intention of fulfilling the contract.

According to the Court, it was informed that due to the conduct of Dor, the complainant was not awarded his degree.

It held that the prosecution had proved their case with enough evidence.

The Court said it considered the fact that Dor was a first-time offender and sentenced him to 36 months imprisonment.

It further ordered the convict to refund the ¢45,000 he collected from the complainant.

He said this while addressing the opening ceremony of a two-day training programme organised by the African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ) at the GIMPA Law Faculty for journalists.

“Giving regard to issues of violence that have occurred on the African continent in recent past such as in Burundi and the role journalists have played in the occurrence or otherwise of these crimes, it is time for media practitioners to pay greater attention to the way and manner they go about their profession.

“Journalists have had a significant role in either igniting or dousing the conflagrations,” Prefessor Bondzi-Simpson said.

He proceeded to ask some rethorical questions, “What do we report and how do we report? Do we analyse? Do we sensationalise? Do we trigger or do we educate, heal and restore?

“Journalism definitely is critical to how society will run and unfold and an appreciation by the practitioners and the students of journalism is critical,” the GIMPA Rector added.

The Netherlands Ambassador

The training programme, titled ‘International Criminal Law and Justice: An Overview,’ was put together by the ACICJ (GIMPA) in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Ghana.

In his message of support, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ghana, Ron Strikker, indicated that with the Netherlands being the host country of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Embassy finds it very necessary to support every effort to educate journalists who are the watchdogs of society as far as impunity is concerned.

The ACICJ

The ACICJ is dedicated to growing the body of knowledge on International Criminal Law & Justice (ICLJ), its necessity and the place of Africa within that paradigm. The ACICJ was conceived as a result of the success of the International Criminal Court (ICC) & Africa Conference held at GIMPA in March, 2016.

The aim of the ACICJ is to center the ongoing discourse on Africa’s role and place in the work of the ICC as it applies to the continent.

The Centre hopes to formalise the network of conference participants as well as International Criminal Law Scholars from all over the world to sustain the conversation, engaging the greater ICLJ community, as well as serve as a focal point for ongoing research, scholarship and training on the ICC and broader ICLJ issues across the continent.
