The Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) has called on the government to expedite ongoing efforts to pass the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill into law following the explosion at Odumasi, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

GhISEP has described the unfortunate incident as a stark reminder of the need to prioritize safety and environmental protection in all aspects of work and daily life in Ghana.

According to the institute, the tragedy was preventable, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation into the causes of the explosion.

In a statement, GhISEP emphasized that passing the OSH Bill would be a significant step towards fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in the country.

“We therefore call on His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, to support the passage of the Bill into law and to ensure its effective implementation through government machinery,” portions of the statement read.

GhISEP further pledged its commitment to monitoring and managing high-risk areas such as mining and construction sites to prevent similar disasters.

“We have the expertise and knowledge to provide guidance and support to industries and organizations on safety and environmental best practices. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in Ghana,” the statement added.

The OSH Bill aims to improve the working environment and conditions, maintain the working capacity of employees, prevent occupational accidents and diseases, and eliminate other workplace hazards.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday, March 5, around 7 pm, affecting 30 buildings and eight shops, claiming three lives, and leaving many injured.

The fire, which broke out in stores selling dynamites and other explosives used by local miners, triggered earth-shaking blasts that damaged buildings and left dozens injured.

The exact cause remains unknown, but authorities say the driver of the first fire tender on the scene collapsed after his vehicle was caught in the impact. Another firefighter sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

GhISEP urges Ghanaians to plant trees, shun illegal mining https://www.adomonline.com/ghisep-urges-ghanaians-to-plant-trees-shun-illegal-mining/ Fri, 27 Sep 2024 18:37:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2454422 President of the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP), Miriam Eduful is urging Ghanaians to make tree planting a regular habit and put an end to destructive illegal mining activities.

Speaking at the 2024 GhISEP Biennial Summit, she emphasised the urgent need to preserve the environment and protect water bodies and ecosystems from deforestation and illegal mining.

Dr. Eduful’s call to action is backed by science. Tree planting is a powerful tool in combating climate change, as trees absorb carbon dioxide and store carbon for long periods.

Reforestation and afforestation efforts can also support biodiversity, prevent flooding, and boost habitat connectivity.

But it’s not just about planting trees.

The Chairman of GhISEP, Obrempong Ohene Apiah III, stressed the importance of proper sanitation and avoiding environmental degradation.

By working together, Ghanaians can build a resilient future and safeguard the environment for generations to come.

The summit’s theme: “Advancing Safety and Environmental Excellence: Building a Resilient Future for Ghana in the Era of Climate Change,” highlights the urgency of addressing occupational safety, health, and climate change concerns.

By embracing a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship, Ghana can thrive in the face of climate change.
