Speaking during an interview on Daybreak Hitz with host Kwame Dadzie, Ren Mich explained that balancing academics and music had become increasingly challenging, prompting the difficult decision.

He revealed that he left UPSA about four years ago while in Level 200.

“I dropped out of school to focus on music because I needed more time to concentrate on it,” he said.

Ren Mich added that managing both school and his growing music career was tough, and he feared that continuing with both could hinder his progress in music. He described the decision as necessary to avoid losing momentum in his career.

Gyankroma Akufo-Addo calls for unique Ghanaian music identity https://www.adomonline.com/gyankroma-akufo-addo-calls-for-unique-ghanaian-music-identity/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 00:44:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2420620 Executive Secretary for the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, has highlighted the importance of creating a distinctive musical identity for Ghana to enhance its international recognition.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders engagement with artistes and artiste managers, she stressed the need for a unique musical identity that has global appeal.

The engagement aimed to gather input from creatives and key players in the industry for the promotion of the #playghana initiative.

Gyankroma, the daughter of President Akufo-Addo, acknowledged Ghana’s historical contribution to Highlife music but emphasized the need for a specific, globally appealing music genre.

“When we mention Ghana music, the immediate question is often ‘what is Ghana music?’ Everybody is doing everything, and so we are supporting everything. However, our producers and musicians must be able to come out with a particular sound that is coming from Ghana. For instance, if it is Highlife, let’s do it, or Hiplife, let’s stick to that. Whichever one, I think the most important thing is to have a music sound from Ghana that will be internationally recognized,” she said.

Gyankroma stressed that the current situation makes it challenging to identify a distinct Ghanaian sound in the global music scene. “Our music industry needs to reach a point where audiences worldwide can readily identify Ghana’s musical signature,” she emphasized.

Nonetheless, she clarified that the initiative’s goal is not to limit Ghanaian musicians to specific genres, but to create a unified and recognizable music identity.

“The aim is to foster a unique sound that can stand out on the global stage while allowing the diversity and creativity of Ghanaian musicians to flourish,” she added.

In December last year, Ghana launched the PlayGhana project, a significant initiative aimed at boosting the exposure of Ghanaian music on local radio stations.

This project is crucial at a time when the local music industry is experiencing a downward trend, seeking to promote and support home-grown talent by ensuring more airtime for Ghanaian artists.

According to him, the lack of money for promotion and investment in music is to blame for the current phenomenon.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Edem said the Ghana music industry lacks the resources and investors who will propel things to greater heights.

“Our industry lacks money. For you to rule you need to be exposed. It’s resources we need, and it’s the same preventing Togolese artiste from crossing into Ghana” he bemoaned.

Edem said certain entertainment awards which will promote Ghana music and Ghanaian artistes have been suspended due to lack of funds.

“It’s the same resources that is making it hard for Bass Awards, Ghana meets Naija and 4syte Music Awards not to happen,” he added.

King Ayisoba reveals why many Ghanaian acts aren’t invited for music festivals abroad [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/king-ayisoba-reveals-why-many-ghanaian-acts-arent-invited-for-music-festivals-abroad-video/ Wed, 14 Jul 2021 10:14:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1985804 Many musicians in Ghana aren’t invited to play shows abroad due to the fact that they do not have a music band to play if they are given an international gig, says traditional musician King Ayisoba.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Ahosepe Xtra show over the weekend, King Ayisoba said musicians should make it a core duty to have a solid live band team because “that is what the white people want.”

Talking further on winning international gigs, Ayisoba said artistes who stay true to their roots with a unique genre always have a higher stake than people who love to perform solo.

Born as Albert Apoozore, the award-winning kologo-stringing musician has played many international shows and speaking on the Ahosepe Show urged musicians to do more live band and not “computer music”.

The rap and computer music will hit but they will not be invited to festivals… when Azonto came, I was in UK and some people mentioned it especially One Corner but the problem is that many don’t have live bands to follow up if they get gigs.

When the song gets there and you say they should play your CD, they don’t really like that during their festivals. You require a live band. If Ghana’s music will change, many musicians need a live band… I played ‘I Want to See My Father’ many times because I was playing the show live [SIC], he said.

70% of songs played on airwaves must be of Ghanaian origin – Samini https://www.adomonline.com/70-songs-played-airwaves-must-ghanaian-origin-samini/ Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:52:17 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=812891 Dancehall artiste, Samini has called on legislators in the country to enact laws that will demand that at least 70% of contents that are played on the airwaves are of Ghanaian origin.
The demand was made after Nigerian musicians dominated at the 2017 Aiteo CAF Awards at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra.
Similar demands were made by fellow Ghanaian musicians, Shatta Wale and Pope Skinny when they advised Disc Jockeys to forgo endorsing Nigerian songs on bigger platforms to promote the Ghanaian Music Industry.
Samini has ignited the campaign by pleading with lawmakers in the country to push the music industry up the ladder by playing 70% of Ghanaian content on the airwaves.
He further stressed that there should be an equal share of performance time on any international platform mounted on the Ghanaian soil.
With these measures, the ‘My Own’ hitmaker believes it will aid musicians to sell their craft unto the international market.
