She made this assertion at the World Political Leaders Summit 2024 held from 19 – 21st March in Athens, Greece.

This relentless pursuit of power, she said, turns politics into a ruthless game where winning is paramount.

Driven by this, the political parties, according to her, then resort to unethical tactics like smear campaigns and spreading misinformation, thereby, poisoning public discourse and eroding trust in democratic institutions.

“This erosion of trust deepens the gap between political entities and citizens, fostering cynicism towards democracy itself,” she bemoaned.

Speaking on the topic ‘The Perilous Grip: How Political Parties Threaten Democracy’ in a main-stage panel conversation with two other women political leaders, Gabriela Crețu, Member of the Senate of Romania, and Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová, Member of the European Parliament, Safo said the actions of political parties have greatly contributed to polarizing the Ghanaian society, a situation she added, comes with dire consequences if not addressed.

The twelfth edition of the three-day Summit was held under the theme, ‘Democracy in the 21st Century’.

The event was co-hosted by WPL and the Government of Greece under the patronage of H. E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

The Summit was meant to address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in democracy in 2024 and to also serve as a powerful reminder of the indispensable role of women’s equal participation and leadership in preserving effective and resilient democracies.

Issues of meritocracy, political funding, and the processes leading to, during, and after the conduct of elections were also discussed by the former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

For instance, on the issue of elections, she said such must be free, fair and transparent, putting the burden of responsibility on the Electoral Commission of Ghana and also charging the political parties to be civil in their utterances so electorates could have confidence and trust in the processes to enable them to participate fully in the exercise.

Speaking on the issue of political party funding, Safo, who made history in the Parliament of Ghana by rising to the position of First female and youngest Deputy Majority Leader said the West African nation has no laws on political funding, making financiers of political parties take advantage of that lacuna to shape the interest of political parties to the detriment of the majority of the people that voted them into power.

To curtail the above-highlighted issues, Safo called for reforms to strengthen democratic institutions and reiterated a quote by President Obama when he visited Ghana’s Parliament in 2009, saying ‘Africa does not need strong men, what Africa needs is strong institutions’

The reforms, she added, must be swift to foster inclusive, sustainable growth and social cohesion.

She further underscored the need to invest in civic education and political literacy to empower citizens to actively participate in the democratic process, calling on civil society organizations to play a role in this regard.

“We have to make sure that as the youth are coming out they see politics not as a tool for ethnic violence; they shouldn’t see politics as a tool of enriching themselves; they don’t see politics as a tool for polarization and sometimes as a tool leading to civil war. They need to see politics in a different dimension, which is that of serving humanity; serving my nation; serving my people; and providing the basic social amenities for my people”, she noted.

Ghana’s fuel emissions levy: Another dubious taxation approach by gov’t on citizens https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-fuel-emissions-levy-another-dubious-taxation-approach-by-govt-on-citizens/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 14:24:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2352358 In December of last year, Ghanaians were greeted with a new fiscal imposition from their government: an annual levy tied to the carbon emissions emanating from their petrol or diesel-powered vehicles.

Proponents of this levy, including the government itself, argue that it serves the dual purpose of curbing the nation’s emissions and bolstering governmental revenue.

The levy was recently greenlit by Ghana’s parliament, encompassing fees ranging from 75 Ghanaian cedis for motorized tricycles and motorcycles to 300 cedis for vehicles boasting a capacity of 3,000cc or higher.

While on the global scale, fuel emissions levies are intended to foster the adoption of eco-friendly technology and green energy, the rationale behind this specific tax begs scrutiny.

Firstly, it is imperative to question whether this levy stands any credible chance of significantly curbing emissions.

The resounding answer is ‘no’!

This levy, as it stands, isn’t a progressive solution to carbon emission in Ghana as the absence of credible alternatives will effectively take away the levy’s deterrent effect necessary to dissuade individuals from operating carbon-emitting vehicles.

The fact is, if this levy is meant to incentivise the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), then it is too far-fetched as vehicle buyers in Ghana have no such alternatives.

In the Ghanaian context, where such alternatives remain scarce, this tax merely imposes an additional burden on citizens without offering a tangible pathway toward sustainable transportation.

It’s baffling that the government proceeds with the implementation of this levy despite acknowledging the populace’s lack of choice in the matter.

The move appears particularly egregious in light of the government’s purported commitment to shifting the nation’s focus from taxation to production, a promise now seemingly contradicted by the imposition of multiple taxes, including this emissions levy.

In essence, Ghana’s venture into carbon emissions taxation raises pertinent questions regarding its efficacy, feasibility, and alignment with broader economic objectives.

As it stands, citizens will have to grapple with yet another tax burden but what can the people do but obey?

Another distressing news hits Mepe https://www.adomonline.com/another-distressing-news-hits-mepe/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 13:31:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2347474 Mepe, a town already grappling with the aftermath of flooding caused by the Volta River Authority (VRA) spillage, has been struck by yet another unfortunate event.

A steel bridge located at Saikope in the Mepe area, crucial for connecting the North Tongu town, of Juapong, to the Central Tongu capital town, Adidome, has collapsed.

According to reports, the collapse occurred when a fully loaded trailer carrying salt attempted to cross the bridge.

Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities resulting from the incident.

In response, the District Chief Executive, Osborn Devine Fenu, has issued a public advisory via his personal Facebook Page.

He urges motorists to take an alternate route through another Mepe town, Dadome, to access Adidome and Juapong safely.

Even though investigations are yet to commence into the actual cause of the collapse, the DCE has alleged overloading of the truck, saying The report have it that a fully loaded trailer carrying salt, likely surpassing the recommended maximum load of 25 tonnes, traversed the bridge, resulting in its collapse. Fortunately, the driver and the mate are reported to be safe.

While the DCE’s claim is a possibility, the point needs to be made that long before the collapse of the bridge, authorities had stationed a warning sign, signaling road users of a “weak bridge ahead” of them.

There is also a sign that says the maximum load limit of the bridge is 25 tons.

Until investigations conclude, it will be difficult to say which of the two phenomena has collapsed the bridge – weak bridge or excess tonnage.

Below is the DCD’s update and advisory as shared on his personal Facebook wall:

Urgent Notice

We woke up to the distressing news of another sudden accident— the collapse of the steel bridge at Saikope-Mepe along the Adidome to Juapong Road.

The report have it that a fully loaded trailer carrying salt, likely surpassing the recommended maximum load of 25 tonnes, traversed the bridge, resulting in its collapse. Fortunately, the driver and the mate are reported to be safe.

We have promptly informed all relevant stakeholders to ensure swift action is taken. The urgent need for a new bridge at the location is abundantly clear.

In the interim, we advise all motorists to utilize the diversion via Dadome to Adidome and Juapong.

In times like this, it’s crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved. This is a challenging situation, but we trust in our collective ability to address it effectively.

This too shall pass!

We’re learning from Nigeria, we will get there – Harold Amenyah on ailing movie industry https://www.adomonline.com/were-learning-from-nigeria-we-will-get-there-harold-amenyah-on-ailing-movie-industry/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 07:55:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2347163 Ghanaian actor, Harold Amenyah has addressed the ailing state of Ghana’s movie industry, attributing it to lack of support from the local audiences.

In an interview, he said the sector is not thriving because movie producers are not encouraged and motivated to release more movies.

Amenyah pointed out that, audience attendance at cinemas is crucial for the growth of the industry, yet most Ghanaians do not show up.

Comparing the Ghanaian film industry to Nigerian, Amenyah acknowledged Nigeria’s stability and strength in the film sector.

This, he explained is because people invest in the Nigerian movie industry and the people also show up during premiers at the cinemas.

The actor suggested that, Ghana can learn from Nigeria’s success by adopting similar strategies to boost the local film sector.

“Ghanaians do not support us. People will ask us why they don’t see us on the screens, it’s because they are not watching and they don’t even look out for it. Nigerians are ahead of us because they get the support. We are learning from them, we will get there. They learn from us in terms of production and filming, but we have to learn from them in terms of support and promotion because they do better than us,” he stated candidly.

In spite of the challenges, Amenyah expressed optimism about the future of the Ghanaian film industry if local productions receive the necessary support.

He urged Ghanaians to support the movie industry by attending premiers and watching local content.

Wine is a gift from God – Pope Francis tells Italian producers https://www.adomonline.com/wine-is-a-gift-from-god-pope-francis-tells-italian-producers/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 07:30:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2347184 Pope tells industry leaders at the Vatican the drink is a ‘source of joy’, but encourages healthy habits.

Pope Francis has said that wine “is a gift from God” and “a true source of joy” for its consumers – words that have been immediately embraced by Italian wine producers who have fought against European health warnings.

Francis made the comments during a private audience at the Vatican with winemakers from across Italy.

Welcoming his audience, he joked: “This seems like a drunk pope,” before going on to say: “Wine, land, agricultural skills and entrepreneurialism are gifts from God – the creator has entrusted them to us because, with our sensitivity and honesty, we make them a true source of joy.”

However, the pontiff also called on the winemakers to reflect on the “moral and ethical responsibilities” their work entails, such as treating their workers and the environment with respect while encouraging healthy drinking habits.

The event was organised by Domenico Pompili, the bishop of Verona, before the Vinitaly wine trade fair that takes place in the northern Italian city each April. The key to drinking wine is moderation, Pompili said. “Saint Paul said it – a glass is good to cheer you up, but in moderation.”

Italy has pushed back against proposals to make health warnings on alcoholic drinks mandatory across the EU after Ireland was given approval by the European Commission to adopt the measure. The move in Ireland, which was met with protest by Italy, Spain and six other EU states, will lead to health warning labels being placed on bottles of wine, beer and spirits from 2026.

Although the daily consumption of wine in Italy has declined steadily over the last 15 years, there has been a rise in more moderate consumption, according to figures from Istat, the national statistics agency. Italian wine associations often refer to this to argue that Italians have a healthier relationship with wine compared with their boozier counterparts in northern Europe.

Federico Bricolo, the president of Veronafiere, which organises Vinitaly, said the pope’s tribute to wine was a reminder that the drink is a “symbol of tradition and of a socially and environmentally sustainable economic system”.

“And all in the name of a conviviality that unites,” he added.

Francis has endorsed wine in the past. During a papal audience in 2016, he said wine was an integral part of a wedding celebration. “A wedding party where no wine makes the newlyweds ashamed, imagine you finish the wedding party drinking tea,” he said.

Wine is also a crucial element of the Catholic mass. In 2014, research found that the Vatican City consumed more wine per capita than any other country.

The discussion veered into a national dialogue, catching even host Chief Jerry Forson and his production team off-guard.

Kpebu, known for his anti-corruption advocacy, delved into the flaws of Ghana’s democratic system, drawing parallels with Socrates’ critique of democracy in “The Republic.”

He highlighted how financial influence often leads to unfit individuals assuming leadership roles in democracies.

During this discourse, Kpebu notably commended Ghana’s third president in the Fourth Republic, Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, suggesting that leaders of his caliber are rare and invaluable.

He proceeded to rank all five presidents of the Fourth Republic, positioning Atta-Mills at the top, followed by Jerry Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Mahama, respectively.

Surprisingly, he placed current president Akufo-Addo at the bottom of his ranking, describing his performance vis a vis the fight against corruption as poor.

Kpebu’s analysis, shared on Adom FM‘s morning show, is expected to spark a deep discussion on Ghana’s political landscape and the perceived susceptibility to corruption among its past and present leaders.

God told me to do it – Pastor who stole millions from church members https://www.adomonline.com/god-told-me-to-do-it-pastor-who-stole-millions-from-church-members/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 16:02:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346364 A US-based pastor, Eli Regalado, says it was God who instructed him to steal over $1.3 million from his Christian community in a cryptocurrency scheme.

Eli and his wife, Kaitlyn, are accused of violating Colorado’s anti-fraud, licensing and registration laws after they created and sold their cryptocurrency, known as “INDXcoin,” to Christians in the state.

The couple allegedly told potential investors that the Lord had told them people would become wealthy if they invested, according to a recent press release issued by the state’s division of securities.

However, prosecutors stated that INDXcoin was “practically worthless” in actuality. Investors lost millions of dollars while the Regalados lived lavishly, The Guardian reports.

In a video statement posted on INDXcoin website, Eli admitted that the pair squandered $1.3 million raised through cryptocurrency.

“The charges are that me and Kaitlyn pocketed $1.3m. I just wanted to come out and say those charges are true.

A few hundred thousand dollars went to a home remodel the Lord told us to do. We took God at his word and sold a cryptocurrency with no clear exit,” he said.

Regalado added that the couple still believes that God will “work a miracle in the financial sector”.

INDXcoin raised around $3.2 million from more than 300 people between June 2022 and April 2023. The Regalados spent at least $1.3 million, or more than half, on personal luxury goods such as jewellery, an au pair, and a costly house improvement project.

The Regalados also collected at least $290,000 for their online-only church, Victorious Grace Church, despite the fact that it has no physical location.

The Regalados also have no expertise with cryptocurrency. A third-party auditor also reported serious technical issues with the INDXcoin code, but the Regalados continued to promote the cryptocurrency as a low-risk, high-reward solution.

51 prisoners who passed BECE gain admission to SHS https://www.adomonline.com/51-prisoners-who-passed-bece-gain-admission-to-shs/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 15:40:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345916 All 51 prison inmates who sat the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have gained admission to various pre-tertiary institutions in the country.

They obtained between aggregates 16 and 31 in the examination, guaranteeing them passage to the next level of the academic ladder.

They comprise 26 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra, nine inmates from the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, eight inmates from the Kumasi Central Prison, four from the Ankaful Maximum Security and four more from the Sunyani Central Prisons.

Thirteen of them, all juveniles, have since been discharged upon completing their terms, leaving 38 of the inmate SHS freshers still serving their terms.

It further leaves 13 of the juveniles still in prison custody.

Juvenile inmates are incarcerated for a maximum three years and a minimum three months.

In a statement signed by the Head of Media Relations of the Ghana Prisons Service, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Irene Pokuah Wiredu, the service said: “The inmate students have, over the years, justified the investments made in their education”.

The schools

The Daily Graphic checks further established that the juvenile inmates, including those now discharged, have since been placed at Mfantsipim Senior High School (SHS) in Cape Coast; Labone SHS, St Thomas Aquinas SHS, Accra Technical Training Centre, the Forces SHS, all in Accra; Tema Technical Institute, and the Agona Swedru Technical Institute, among other pre-tertiary institutions.

Serving juvenile inmates placed in the regular SHSs are escorted by prisons officers to and from school on a daily basis.

Adult inmates who wrote the BECE papers are, however, pursuing General Arts or Business at SHSs on the premises of the Prisons Service under the supervision of the Ghana Education Service.

The students enjoy the full package of the Free SHS initiative, receiving free tuition and feeding in addition to educational materials from the GES.

The statement said the Ghana Prisons Service, in its quest to deliver on its reformation and rehabilitation mandate in line with modern universal best practices, introduced inmates to formal education, where they offered subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

“Formal education gained its popularity in the prisons in 2007, with the support of the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling and the Ghana Education Trust Fund,” it added.

Director-General’s remarks

The statement quoted the Director-General of Prisons, Isaac Kofi Egyir, as saying that “prisoner education is one of the surest and safest ways the service had prioritised over the years to reform inmates and provide them with better living upon their release.’’

“It is worthy to note that there is a drastic reduction in the rate of recidivism (the tendency of a convicted criminal to reoffend) for the prisoners who participated in prison education programmes, thereby reducing the recidivism rate in the prisons to the barest minimum,” Mr Egyir stated.

“For those who are serving lengthy sentences, prison education has had a profound and often life-changing benefit on them such as a substantial reduction in violence and disciplinary infractions, breaking down religious and ethnic barriers that sometimes created tension in prisons, significantly improving relations between officers and the inmates, and enhancing the inmates’ self-esteem,” the statement further quoted the Director-General of Prisons.

Other educational projects

Beyond basic school and SHS, the Prisons Service, in partnership with the University of Cape Coast and the Plan Volta Foundation, has introduced the University of Cape Coast Distance Learning Programme which provides tertiary education for prison inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security and Nsawam Female prisons who have excelled in their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the years.

The educational programmes run by the service include University of Cape Coast Distance Programme, National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI)/ICT and Proficiency for Tradesmen, Energy Commission Training and CTVET Electrical Certification Programme.

These, the statement said, would soon be extended to the other prisons across the country.

Currently, it said, 162 prisoners had been enrolled in the College of Distance Education (University of Cape Coast) to study for a Bachelor of Education degree with specialisation in English Language and Social Studies or Mathematics and Science, and a Bachelor of Commerce with specialisation in Accounting and Management.

About eight juveniles, who successfully completed SHS while in detention at the Senior Correctional Centre between 2020 and 2022, are pursuing various programmes at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and the Technical universities of Accra, Ho and Koforidua, among others.

The court premises are closely monitored, with a stationed FPU vehicle and other police vehicles on standby, all linked to the impending judgment.

The heightened security measures are in anticipation of the verdict scheduled for today, attracting attention not only from law enforcement but also from the families and friends of the nine individuals on trial.

These individuals face charges related to an alleged plot to destabilize the country.

The courtroom is filled as supporters gather, eagerly awaiting the judgment.

The trial’s judgment date was set on November 22, 2023, following the submission of written arguments by all parties involved.

The accused include Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the late Chief Executive Officer of Citadel Hospital, and ACP Dr. Agordzo, along with eight others.

They were charged in April 2021 with conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason, and high treason.

The accused individuals pleaded not guilty, and all 10 were granted bail while standing trial. However, Dr. Mac-Palm’s passing led to the deletion of his testimony from the records.

The prosecution team, led by AG Godfred Yeboah Dame, included prominent figures from the Attorney General’s Department, such as Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa and Hilda Craig.

The defence was represented by lawyers including Rita Akukunti Ali, Victor Kodjogah Adawudu, Anthony Lartey, Eric Kpongo, Lamptiig Apanga, and others.

The three-member panel of judges overseeing the case consists of Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, and Justice Stephen Oppong, all serving as additional High Court judges.

State witnesses, including seven soldiers, were presented during the trial, and the prosecution concluded its case on July 12, 2022, after calling a total of 13 witnesses. The trial, which began on June 8, 2021, has garnered significant attention due to the nature of the charges and the involvement of high-profile individuals.

Tax political party donations before you tax church offerings – Rev Dr Opuni Frimpong https://www.adomonline.com/tax-political-party-donations-before-you-tax-church-offerings-rev-dr-opuni-frimpong/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 10:36:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346066 Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, a former General Secretary of the Christian Council, is encouraging the public to advocate for the taxation of donations to political parties before proposing taxes on church offerings.

He contends that churches already fulfill their tax obligations for commercial activities and emphasizes that offerings are voluntary contributions exempt from taxation by law.

In an interview on Adom FM‘s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong highlighted that churches engaged in commercial ventures, such as conference centers and guest houses, dutifully meet their tax responsibilities.

He clarified that the call for churches to pay taxes may stem from a lack of awareness that churches primarily exist for non-commercial purposes.

As a Presbyterian pastor, he shared his personal experience, stating, “I am a Presbyterian pastor; at the end of the month, my employer deducts my taxes from the source. By this, before I get my salary, I see all the deductions by way of taxes. Churches with other forms of businesses such as conference centres, guest houses etc, they pay their taxes accurately. When people keep saying that churches should pay taxes, we must bear in mind that it is not as though churches engage in commercial activities, but those that have some components of commercial businesses pay their taxes. So, churches pay taxes already.”

Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong proposed that if there is consideration for taxing voluntary contributions, the government and the public should start with political parties.

He urged, “But I believe that people keep making these arguments because of the offerings we take. Consider this, as a country we do not tax any voluntary contribution. Before you ask churches to pay taxes, any time NPP and NDC meet in their respective party meetings, they should pay taxes on their contributions.”

Funny Face’s baby mama opens up on their current relationship https://www.adomonline.com/funny-faces-baby-mama-opens-up-on-their-current-relationship/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 10:07:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345935 Funny Face’s baby mama, Vanessa Nicole, has shed light on the current state of her relationship with the popular comedian.

Despite no longer being together, she remarked that they maintain an amicable co-parenting arrangement for the sake of their triplets.

When asked about the involvement of their children’s father, she responded, “We are cool.”

Vanessa did not bow to pressure and chose not to delve into Funny Face’s private life when pressed by the interviewer.

Rather, she said her focus is on providing for her children and building a stable future, and that can only be with the help of Funny Face.

“When two parents are cool, then the children are cool,” she noted, as she spoke on the significance of maintaining a harmonious relationship for the well-being of their kids.

Regarding their triplets, she shared that they are doing well and will soon celebrate their fifth birthday in May.

This comes at the back of an outburst when Funny Face revealed he has not seen his triplets in the last four years and he has yet to meet his last child, Kimberly, since she was born.

The reason, he revealed, is that he is facing financial challenges that have limited him from performing his role as a doting father.

VAT on electricity: TUC justifies ultimatum to govt https://www.adomonline.com/vat-on-electricity-tuc-justifies-ultimatum-to-govt/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 09:35:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346007 The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has justified the 7-day ultimatum to government over the implementation of the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity.

According to TUC, excessive taxes is an unfair way for the government to generate revenue.

Deputy General Secretary of TUC, Joshua Ansah, in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, warned that if the government doesn’t remove the tax, Organized Labour will take action.

He said the incessant taxes is negatively affecting the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians, especially pensioners and low-income earners.

Mr. Ansah believes that, there are alternative ways for the government to generate revenue to service the energy sector debt and stabilise electricity supply without burdening consumers with additional taxes.

He said relying solely on VAT is an easy way for the government but there are better ways to raise revenue.

To the TUC General Secretary, imposing taxes on workers is unfair thus government should explore other options to generate revenue.

“Organized labour will advise itself, and unions will do what unions often do when an unpopular decision or tax is introduced that affects workers.

“VAT is not the only thing the government can do to bring back the lights. I don’t think that is the only way the government can take to make the electricity supply stable when a lot of the population is suffering. This is not fair, and that is why workers are resisting it with all their might” Mr. Ansah added.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to implement the VAT to generate funds for the COVID-19 recovery program.

I never turned into a snake or tiger as I claimed – Obinim confesses [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/i-never-turned-into-a-snake-or-tiger-as-i-claimed-obinim-confesses-watch/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 09:11:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345944 The founder of International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim has said he has no supernatural powers to turn into an animal.

According to him, such claims were just bravado just to impress his followers.

Years ago, the popular prophet boasted about having the ability to transform into snake or a tiger and appear in peoples dreams.

Angel Obinim as he is popular called went viral for this assertion and became a demigod for his followers.

But years after sober reflections, the man of God said all the things he said and did were vanity.

In a video on Tiktok, Bishop Obinim apologised to the public noting that, the things he did were due to circumstances beyond his control.

“I was saying a lot of things that were beyond me. People are asking me to turn into a snake or a tiger. How can I do that? Am I a vampire or an animal? How can someone who has a human body with a wife and children do this?.

Stay at home; don’t fight your successors – Julius Malema to former Presidents https://www.adomonline.com/stay-at-home-dont-fight-your-successors-julius-malema-to-former-presidents/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 08:54:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346046 The leader and founder of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has urged former Presidents in Africa to refrain from making the governance of their successors challenging.

Speaking at a public dialogue organized by the pressure group AriseGhana in Accra on Tuesday, January 23, Mr. Malema emphasised that former presidents should remain at home, participating in state visits as statesmen, and not engage in opposition to their successors.

He insisted that former presidents should not interfere in the affairs of ruling presidents and suggested that they be held accountable, discouraging their involvement in any civilised democracy.

“You have to ensure that democracy matures in such a manner in Africa, where the previous president does not make it his business to fight the current president, you must allow the new to lead with all their force because you were the same, it doesn’t mean you are perfect”.

“No African leader, who is on retirement, should lead from the grave. They must all be like all other progressive former presidents who are statements at home, waiting for courtesy visits and consultations, and attending to other state functions. Those are the duties of former presidents because Africa must be stable, Africa must go through democracy at all times,” Mr Malema said.

Mr. Malema further encouraged African leaders not to impose themselves on their people beyond the constitutional requirements.

He stressed that democracy entails holding elections after a specified period, and when leaders are voted out of power, they should peacefully exit without resorting to using the military to extend their tenure.

“We call on all African leaders not to leave an office with a coffin. When the time comes for them to go they must leave without calling the army to to extend their term” he said at an event in Accra organised by Arise Ghana, titled, ‘A Day of Dialogue With Julius Malema.’

“No one is born a leader. No one is a traditional leader in a political office. If you want to be a traditional leader, go and fight in your tribe for those types of issues. We don’t subscribe to people who want to leave a political office with a coffin,” he added.

The strike, which began last Wednesday, is due to government’s alleged neglect of pension concerns and the contentious cancellation of overtime allowances.

The purpose of the upcoming meeting is to facilitate mediation between the unions and relevant stakeholders, aiming to find a resolution that would bring an end to the ongoing strike.

The associations argue that, their appeals for the payment of two-tier pensions and overtime allowances have been ignored, prompting the industrial action.

The strike has resulted in the withdrawal of crucial services, impacting sectors such as healthcare, administration, and security.

Final year students are facing challenges in their practical sessions due to the absence of senior technicians to supervise their work.

I was hurt over Agyapa, PDS accusations – Gabby Otchere-Darko https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-hurt-over-agyapa-pds-accusations-gabby-otchere-darko/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 07:50:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345929 Founder and Chairman of Africa Prosperity Network, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, stated that accusations thrown at him for the Agyapa and PDS agreements hurt him.

The corporate lawyer said the move could have boosted his company’s CV as the legal firm that worked on the agreement.

According to him, the government did not contract him to offer the legal work but rather the consultant on the project called him which his accusers were unaware of.

“How come the other lawyers in Agyapa you are not accusing them but you are accusing me and I wasn’t even contracted by the government.

“I was contracted by a Consultant because they know the work you do in certain areas and they ask people and you then you give your opinion on certain things and I was contracted to do for a consultant and not for the government,” he said in an interview on Starr FM.

“The Agyapa kind of hurt me a lot because for me being at such an innovative approach to raising money and being part of the value chain of gold for me I thought that was good for my firm. It was something that we were going to celebrate that yes we were part of the lawyers that drafted this,” he stated.

Mr. Otchere-Darko disclosed that President Akufo-Addo wanted Ghanaians to own a bigger percentage with the PDS agreement.

“PDS was one of the most painful things and the reason being the whole PDS thing was created even before this government came to office. There were five companies that were shortlisted before NPP came into office.”

“The only difference was that under the previous government Ghanaians can own 20 percent and the foreigners can own 80 percent. Akufo-Addo thought no way. This is a great asset of the country and it creates income all the time. You may bring some small money but once you have it you can even use the expected revenue to go and raise money,” the corporate lawyer stated.

The artiste, known for her distinctive style and powerful performances, addressed questions from fans during an interactive session.

Following an announcement that she will be holding her next show at the Alliance Française, a fan inquired why she opts for such venues instead of larger spaces like stadiums and event centres.

In response, Wiyaala said her approach to shows is different.

She emphasized that her craft, as well as her targeted audience, sets her apart from other artistes who may choose more conventional venues.

Another inquisitive fan pointed out that, Ghana is not her target hence the reason she is not so interested in the conservative type of performances other artistes will opt for.

Responding to the fan, Wiyaala refuted the notion, stating that she indeed has Ghana at heart.

She referenced her numerous performances for Ghanaian audiences and affirmed her connection to the country.

The question and answer session took a lighthearted turn when a fan inquired about Wiyaala’s age.

In a playful approach, she sarcastically said she is 83.

CCTV captures moment woman planted bomb in front of her ex-boyfriend’s room https://www.adomonline.com/cctv-captures-moment-woman-planted-bomb-in-front-of-her-ex-boyfriends-room/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 07:29:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345895 A shocking video has captured the moment a woman planted a ‘deodorant bomb’ outside her ex-boyfriend’s front door, causing a huge fireball explosion.

Lauren Marie Talbot caused the explosion outside her ex-partner’s home at around 8:pm on June 18, 2023. CCTV footage from inside the flat building showed the 39-year-old, with her hood up, planting the gas canister outside the front door after failing to put it through the letterbox.

The blast blew two doors open, cracking the walls causing structural damage, and burning the carpet.

When fire crews arrived to put it out, they found writing on the wall which read “This flat can burn in hell”, according to Northants Police.

During the time of the explosion, her ex-partner was not in, though evidence suggested she thought he would be, and no one was injured.

Talbot was arrested in connection with the fire and subsequently charged with arson with intent to endanger life, pleading guilty to both offences in September last year at Northampton Crown Court. She was sentenced to six years in prison at the same court on January 16.

Detective Constable Roisin Harrison said: “Lauren Talbot’s offending was exceptionally dangerous. She could have killed someone as a result of both offences and it’s through sheer luck that no one was injured. As you can see in the footage, the carnage she created when she set that can of butane on fire is extensive.

“It could very easily have ended with a large fire throughout the block of flats, causing untold damage, and I hope this is something she reflects on during her time in prison. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the man in this case who has supported our investigation from the beginning.

“Luckily he was not in his flat that day, but the incident has understandably had a very real effect on him. I hope this result provides him with some semblance of closure. I am pleased to see Talbot handed this sentence and I hope it shows how seriously Northamptonshire Police take these kind of incidents”.

Afcon 2023: The African footballers putting their hearts on the line https://www.adomonline.com/afcon-2023-the-african-footballers-putting-their-hearts-on-the-line/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 18:12:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345742 One player was a notable absentee during Zambia’s first two games at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but Enock Mwepu’s non-selection had nothing to do with his abilities.

Instead, it was because the midfielder, who captained his country in their first two qualifiers in June 2022, had been forced to retire from football after being diagnosed with a hereditary cardiac condition.

In September that year, he had fallen ill in Mali with tests upon his return to his then club, Premier League side Brighton, delivering the worst outcome for the then 24-year-old.

The Seagulls said Mwepu would be at an “extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event” if he continued playing.

“It is a terrible blow for Enock, but he has to put his health and his family first,” Brighton’s head of medicine said at the time.

“This is the right choice, however difficult it is to quit the game he loves.”

Yet it is not a decision that all African footballers in Mwepu’s position have made.

Just two months ago, former Ghana international Raphael Dwamena died after collapsing on the pitch in Albania, having chosen to play on after removing an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), fitted in 2020, that could have prevented his fatal heart attack.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen had a similar device fitted after collapsing while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

One of Dwamena’s former clubs, FC Zurich, first discovered his heart issues in 2017 and were advised by various specialists and cardiologists that he could continue – which he did – with the Swiss Super League side always ensuring they had a mobile defibrillator pitch-side in case of emergency.

But there was no such provision at Albanian side Egnatia FC, who were contacted in vain by the BBC but who told the Athletic last year that they were happy for Dwamena to play “so long as all the tests were done by the club”.

Knowing the risks

Sadly, the former Black Stars striker was not the only African to die on the pitch last year.

Moustapha Sylla passed away in March last year while playing for top-flight side Racing Club d’Abidjan in Ivory Coast, the country currently hosting the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Like Dwamena, Sylla would also have been aware he was risking his life by taking to the field, as the defender had been effectively kicked out of the Malian league in 2022 after mandatory pre-season medical checks revealed his condition.

His death, aged just 21, prompted former Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba to issue a plea on behalf of all players in his homeland’s local league system after its third heart-related death since 2019.

“Condolences to Ivorian football… 3 deaths of players in the Ivorian pro league in less than 4 years…,” Drogba posted on X, then known as Twitter., external

“When will there be compulsory medical examinations for “professional” players?… Blood test, ECG [Echocardiogram], stress tests? When will sports medicine arrive?”

With at least two dozen African footballers known to have died of heart-related issues over the years, Drogba’s attitude about needing more stringent medical provisions for cardiac issues is one with which another ex-Chelsea star agrees.

“I played in Europe several times and I know that when you sign the contract, you have to pass a medical control,” said Geremi, a former Cameroon international who is now a players’ union representative.

“We have to implement that here in Africa.”

While this does happen in some African clubs, it does not happen all over – one reason for Drogba’s plea.

Like Geremi, who lost team-mate Marc-Vivien Foe on the pitch in 2003, Drogba also lost an international team-mate to a heart issue in Cheick Tiote, an African champion in 2015 and a man with whom he shared the pitch on dozens of occasions.

Listening to the medics

Didier Drogba speaking during a press conference
Didier Drogba, who failed in a bid to become the president of Ivory Coast’s football federation in 2022, has called for compulsory medical checks

One major issue is that the African heart is believed to be more susceptible to cardiac problems, with a medical research team backed by world governing body Fifa determining, in 2009, that “black African athletes seem to have an increased risk of adverse cardiac events during sports events”.

The other primary issue is the refusal of some players with heart issues to heed medical advice.

South African doctor Lervasen Pillay is someone who knows this only too well, having had to advise five different footballers to quit because of heart-related problems.

“It’s never an easy conversation, because someone has been doing this job for 10-15 years and now you’ve given him news to say, ‘Listen, you can’t do this anymore, you need to make a plan B’,” Dr Pillay told BBC Sport Africa.

“Most footballers have not established a Plan B by the time they’re 25, and the conversation often boils down to that exact question: ‘What am I going to do if I stop playing football?’

For Dr Pillay, it is hard to watch when players who have been told not to play stick to Plan A despite knowing the dangers.

“When you see the guy’s name on the starting line-up you cringe – and if it’s going to be a televised match, I’ll change the channel,” he said.

One patient, who cannot be named without breaching confidentiality rules, died two years after he failed to heed Dr Pillay, leaving the latter “depressed for a while”.

“If you find someone with a cardiac problem, then ensure your medical care around that – so (that) you have things like automatic external defibrillators around, access to hospitals and emergency vehicles, because if you don’t have them, you are creating a problem.”

While FC Zurich took precisely that action in relation to Dwamena, many other clubs have not.

There have been notable incidents in the past where basic medical provisions are not available in African grounds, such as when local Nigerian footballer Chineme Martins died in 2020 following a catalogue of failures.

Access to the right support

The mother and sister of Moustapha Sylla hold a pictorial tribute to the deceased Ivorian footballer
The sister of Moustapha Sylla (right) says medical assistance available to players at Ivorian clubs must be improved

In a bid to reduce the number of tragic incidents that have rocked the sport, the Confederation of African Football conducts mandatory tests before major international tournaments, as does Fifa.

Fifa recommends that every school, club and organisation involved in football has an emergency plan in place to deal with a collapsed player.

Following Sylla’s death, his sister Bintou Sylla told BBC Sport Africa that the medical support given to her brother following his collapse was inadequate.

Both Racing Club and the Ivorian football federation did not respond to the BBC’s requests to comment on Sylla’s death and its surrounding factors.

He died at the Robert Champroux Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s largest city which is hosting matches in two different stadiums – the Felix Houphouet-Boigny and the Alassane Ouattara – during the Nations Cup.

But in contrast to local Ivorian league matches, there is plenty of medical support provided during Africa’s biggest sporting event, with pitch-side care as well as ambulances, helicopters and nearby hospitals all on standby.

Some see a clear contrast between the way in which international and local players are looked after.

“They must have access to the same medical support,” Bintou Sylla said. “Because it is the lives of children that are in play here.”

“So they really must review the medical assistance in Ivorian clubs. We don’t need another player to suffer.”

Given the heartbreak suffered by so many, Mwepu – who may be finding it difficult following Zambia’s progress at their first Nations Cup finals since 2015 – can at least take solace in knowing that, however hard his decision to quit, it is one that could well have saved his life.

“Haruna was my friend long before my parliamentary days. He was once a NUGS president and had a three-year lead over me. I also later became the NUGS president, creating a strong bond between us. Despite his efforts to bring me into the NDC, my family’s political roots are with the UP (United Party), and I have deep respect for the NDC,” he explained during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

Despite Haruna Iddrisu’s attempts, Annoh-Dompreh, who is currently seeking a fourth term in office, remained steadfastly loyal to his political upbringing.

In his perspective, he emphasized that his colleagues have played a pivotal role in shaping his political journey.

Social media user takes back insult directed at Samini amidst threats https://www.adomonline.com/social-media-user-takes-back-insult-directed-at-samini-amidst-threats/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 15:58:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345658 Tempers flared on X, formerly Twitter, when Ghanaian musician, Samini expressed his disappointment with the performance of the Black Stars in the AFCON match against Mozambique.

A young man on the platform responded by calling Samini “foolish,” leading to a heated exchange between the two.

In his initial posts, Samini aired his grievances about the Black Stars’ performance, criticizing some players for their display in the match, which ended in a draw.

The young X user, while tagging Samini, expressed more concern about the artiste acting like a know-it-all rather than focusing on the players’ failure.

Samini, surprised by the insult, questioned why the young man would resort to name-calling when he was expressing his disappointment as a Ghanaian.

Despite opinions being free, Samini emphasized that insults were unnecessary and urged the individual to express disagreement without resorting to offensive language.

In response, the X user appeared unfazed and continued seemingly mocking Samini. The musician, however, maintained his stance, stating that he would find the individual.

The exchange took a turn when the X user later apologized to Samini in private messages, citing frustrations as the reason for his behaviour.

Meanwhile, Samini, demonstrating grace, forgave the young man and encouraged him to be a better version of himself.

While the incident began with tension and insults, it ended on a note of reconciliation, with Samini choosing forgiveness over continued animosity.

The decision, according to the bereaved family, is due to the lack of respect by some members of the Traditional Council and the Konongo palace.

The family has issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding that the Council adhere to traditions and customs.

Addressing a press conference, the Asona clan claimed there is a deliberate attempt to sideline the family from the planning process.

The funeral rites have been set for Wednesday, January 24, 2024, without the family’s knowledge, contrary to customary practice.

They argue that, per the Akan traditions and customs, burials are organised by the family and of the deceased

However, in the case of the late chief, the Traditional Council wants to do the funeral without the family.

Son of the late chief said the family’s hands are tied, as the body of his late father has been moved to a different mortuary, and all attempts to locate it have proven futile.

They are, therefore, demanding that the Council do the right thing concerning the burial of their relative.

The late Nana Kwame Batafo Acheampong Nti II was the chief of Konongo from 1983 to 2022. He was the 18th chief of Konongo.

Following his demise, Nana Dr. Awuah Abedimsa II has been customarily enstooled as his successor.

Latest update on siblings killed by bedbugs insecticide https://www.adomonline.com/latest-update-on-siblings-killed-by-bedbugs-insecticide/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 14:41:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345640 Police prosecutors say they are awaiting advice from the Attorney General’s Office after concluding investigations into the deaths of three siblings suspected to be caused by an insecticide used for bedbug control.

The police indicate that, they have obtained an autopsy report on the cause of death, as the victims have already been buried.

The case has been adjourned to March 4, 2024.

On December 28, 2023, 15-year-old Judith Ekua Frans, and her siblings, 11-year-old Christian Magdaline Efua Frans, and six-year-old Nana Benin, who lived at Pakoso with their mother, visited their grandmother for school holidays in Asawase.

Their uncle, Anthony Frans, while preparing a room for the children’s stay, applied an insecticide, Toptoxin Fumigation tablet, also known as ‘bomb,’ to disinfect the room against bedbugs.

The three siblings, along with their grandmother, 66-year-old Ekua Gyaabena, slept in the room that night.

The siblings, along with their grandmother, were found unconscious in the room the following morning and were rushed to the hospital.

The two siblings, Christian Magdaline Efua Frans and Nana Benin, died upon arrival at the hospital, while the grandmother and Judith Ekua Frans were admitted.

Judith Ekua Frans later died while on admission.

Assembly member for the Asawase East Electoral area, Mathew Amissah, narrated the incident to Citi News and said the occurrence has thrown the community into grief.

“I was informed about the incident by a friend in my electoral area while on a visit to the hospital. I rushed to the ward and realized two of the victims had passed on. The grandmother and the eldest niece were also admitted to the Emergency Center ward of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment. I assisted them, and we came to the police station, and the uncle of the deceased who applied the chemical was arrested and detained,” he explained.

The uncle of the deceased person, Anthony Frans, made his second appearance in court on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, after being detained as part of police investigations.

Police slapped him with a provisional charge of murder, and prosecutors were seeking ample time to continue with investigations.

But Defence Counsel, Evans Amankwaah, prayed for bail for him, which was granted by the court.

He said his client deserved the right to be granted bail while investigations continue.

He insisted that the incident was pathetic and that the police should soften its stance against his client.

The accused was granted a GH¢20,000 bail sum with two sureties.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The case was then adjourned to today, January 23, 2024.

Two accused persons, including the deceased’s house help, Alister John, are on trial for the alleged murder of the businesswoman, Princess Afia Ahenkan.

The second accused, James Anokye, was denied bail after the court cited, among other reasons, his safety and the fact that the prosecution was still awaiting advice from the Attorney General’s office to commence the committal process.

The 35-year-old businesswoman, Princess Afia Ahenkan, was brutally murdered on Monday, September 11, 2023, at her residence in Apaaso near Sokoban, within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of the Ashanti Region.

Alister John had been employed as the deceased’s house help but allegedly killed her a week later. He was arrested on Thursday, September 14, 2023, just days after the alleged crime.

The two have been in police custody while proceedings continue.

The third accused, 23-year-old Collins Atuo, who appeared at the Asokore Mampong District Court on Tuesday, has also been remanded in prison custody.

The deceased’s relatives have expressed satisfaction with the case so far.

A relative told Citi News in an interview on Tuesday that “Everything is in the hands of the prosecutor. So we are waiting to see what will happen next, but we have got assurance that they are not going to come out for now. We are happy that finally, they have arrested the three of them. We are waiting for the next step. The police CID have done their job. They have done well. We have appreciated and clapped for them.”

Another said, “We are very happy today with the outcome. So we are hoping that everything will come to a successful end.

The case has been adjourned to February 6, 2024.

Gabby is definition of ‘a man soaked in power’ – Prof Kobby Mensah https://www.adomonline.com/gabby-is-definition-of-a-man-soaked-in-power-prof-kobby-mensah/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 13:30:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345597 Professor Kobby Mensah has defined New Patriotic Party stalwart, Gabby Otchere-Darko, saying he’s a man soaked in power.

The professor has challenged Gabby’s assertion that family members of the president have an edge when it comes to political appointments because their grandfather gave them a good education.

According to Prof Mensah, the NPP man only made such comments because he had become “soaked in power” as his position is averse to the principles of good governance.

The principle of conflict of interest doesn’t make sense anymore to those who feel they are more educated than all Ghanaians because their grandparents took that seriously than the grannies of all of us.

Gabby, in a recent interview on Star FM, made the point that Akufo-Addo’s grandfather fathered a lot of children who got head starts in life because he took their education seriously.

“… Because they got education early at a time that just a minority of Ghanaians were getting education, it gave them, if you like, to a point a head start.

“I’m just making the point that I don’t know how many of you in this room have a grandfather who had over 100 children?… I did.

“So, he’s appointed and his appointment is just because he’s family member; just forget the fact that he helped to raise money, he put resources in there (his own resources), he was a critical member of the campaign and he was a successful businessman, a private sector person, who has something to contribute,” he said of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Prophet Fire Ogya replies Ghanaians with Mama Esther’s ‘Me Judge Akasa’ https://www.adomonline.com/prophet-fire-ogya-replies-ghanaians-with-mama-esthers-me-judge-akasa/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 13:16:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345482 Self-styled prophet, Fire Ogya has got the last laugh at Ghanaians after Black Stars played a drawn game with Mozambique in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Prior to the game, the prophet predicted Black Stars will not qualify for the round of 16 in the AFCON tournament, as the game will end in a draw.

However, his prediction was met with backlash, especially as his previous prediction failed to materialise.

Fire Ogya was taken to the cleaners after his claim that Jordan Ayew would outshine Kudus Mohammed in the game. But at the end of the match, Kudus was named Man of the Match.

The criticisms did not deter the prophet as he went on to predict the outcome of the Ghana – Mozambique match.

This time, luck smiled on him and his prediction came to pass.

Feeling vindicated, Prophet Fire Ogya took to social media to share Mama Esther’s lyrics, “Me Judge Akasa,” to wit my ‘judge has spoken’ as a playful response to those who doubted his prophetic abilities.

He said the outcome of the match is an attestation that, he is a true man of God.
