The Minister for Communication, Digital Innovation and Technology, Samuel Nartey George, has called for a revision of the maximum age limit for enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces, describing the current policy as unfair to capable and physically fit individuals in their 30s.

His comments follow the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, which has sparked public debate over eligibility requirements, especially age restrictions.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Mr. George stated that Ghana needs to modernise its enlistment policies to match contemporary realities and provide equal opportunities for citizens willing to serve.

“I honestly believe it is time for our beloved nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services,” he wrote.

“There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age. There is precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it.”

Joining the discussion, Majority Whip and MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, also expressed support for the proposal on X.

He noted that several party supporters had raised concerns about the existing age limit and cited examples from countries such as Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria, and the United States, where enlistment is permitted well into one’s 30s or beyond.

“In Ghana, we can extend our age limit to say 35 or even 40 years, depending on medical fitness and non-combatant roles. We need new ways of doing things. For God and Country,” Mr. Dafeamekpor posted.

Both lawmakers believe that increasing the age limit would not only create opportunities for more Ghanaians but also strengthen the Armed Forces with dedicated and experienced recruits.

Their call comes as the military continues its recruitment drive amid growing discussions about fairness, inclusivity, and the need to update recruitment policies to reflect modern national security demands.

National Ambulance Service strengthens ties with Ghana Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/national-ambulance-service-strengthens-ties-with-ghana-armed-forces/ Sun, 24 Aug 2025 11:42:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570460 The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has deepened its collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to improve healthcare delivery, particularly through the training of Military Emergency Medical Technicians (MEMTs).

The initiative underscores NAS’s vital role in strengthening Ghana’s emergency medical response systems, both within the military and across the country.

A delegation from the GAF, led by Col. Francisca Aba Amakye, Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, paid a courtesy call on the Acting Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, and his management team to reaffirm the partnership and explore new areas of cooperation.

Since the partnership began in 2013, NAS has trained four cohorts of MEMTs, who continue to serve in both military and civilian emergency care. According to officials, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to capacity building and the delivery of effective pre-hospital care during critical situations.

By mandate, the Ghana Armed Forces frequently participate in national and international operations where medical emergencies are prevalent. With support from NAS, the military has been able to enhance its preparedness and response to these challenges.

Established in 2004 after the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster that claimed 126 lives, NAS remains committed to its mission of providing quality pre-hospital emergency care for Ghanaians.

Ghana Armed Forces receives $1m women’s body armor donation from U.S. https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-armed-forces-receives-1m-womens-body-armor-donation-from-u-s/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 07:24:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569512 The United States government has donated women’s body armor valued at over $1 million to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in a move aimed at strengthening the safety and effectiveness of female peacekeepers deployed in high-risk missions worldwide.

The donation is part of a broader initiative to support countries that contribute troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions and to promote greater inclusion of women in such operations.

The body armor, specifically tailored for women, is expected to address longstanding challenges faced by female soldiers who have had to adapt to equipment designed primarily for men.

Gender equality in security

The Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, who made the presentation at the Burma Camp today (August 20), said the gesture was a reflection of the US commitment to Ghana’s peacekeeping efforts and to the broader agenda of gender equality in security.

He praised Ghana for consistently ranking among the top 10 troop-contributing countries to UN missions, noting that its soldiers ,both men and women , had earned respect for their professionalism, discipline and resilience in complex theatres of operation.

“Every day, Ghanaian peacekeepers serve on the frontlines of global security, often in places far from home, where danger and uncertainty are part of daily life,” he said.

“This donation is not just about equipment, it is about ensuring that every soldier, regardless of gender, has the protection they deserve while serving humanity. Women bring unique perspectives and skills to peacekeeping, and when they are fully equipped, the missions become stronger and more effective,” he added.

Mr Olson recalled the recent recognition of two Ghanaian female peacekeepers who received top UN military honors in Abyei in 2024 and 2025, describing their achievements as a testament to the value of women in international peace operations.

He said the U.S. was proud to partner with Ghana through initiatives such as the Women’s Body Armor Pilot Project, launched in 2023 with the Netherlands, Zambia and Ghana itself.

“The world is facing unprecedented challenges from terrorism and armed conflict to humanitarian crises  and peacekeepers are the bridge between despair and hope. As Ghana’s women in uniform take on greater responsibilities in these missions, they must be adequately protected. This body armor is designed specifically for them, to give them the confidence, safety, and mobility they need to carry out their duties effectively,” Mr Olson said.

He further emphasised that security and prosperity are closely linked, and that by safeguarding those who safeguard peace, the U.S. and Ghana were jointly investing in a more stable future.

Appreciation

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Gbentanu, who received the donation on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces, described it as timely and significant.

He said it demonstrated the recognition of the sacrifices made by female personnel and the commitment of partners to safeguard their welfare as they serve under challenging conditions.

“This is the first time ever that women’s body armor is being donated to the GAF and it comes at a time when the roles and responsibilities of our women in uniform are expanding rapidly, both at home and in peacekeeping missions abroad,” he said.

He explained that female personnel had often faced difficulties working with equipment designed for men, which sometimes limited their comfort and effectiveness on the field.

“For years, our women have had to make do with protective gear that did not fully consider their physiology. Yet they never relented in carrying out their duties. This support, therefore, sends a strong signal that their sacrifices are recognised and that their operational effectiveness matters just as much as that of their male colleagues,” Major General Gbentanu said.

He expressed his gratitude to the U.S. government and its partners for prioritising gender inclusion in global security.

He assured that the GAF would put the donated equipment to the best use, and that the training already provided to soldiers would ensure proper handling and maintenance.

Tribute by GAF to late Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah  https://www.adomonline.com/tribute-by-gaf-to-late-sergeant-ernest-addo-mensah/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 13:48:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567619 “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.” Psalm 116:15 NIV

Sgt. Mensah Addo Ernest was enlisted into the Ghana Air Force on 25 July 2011 and
successfully passed out on 23 December 2011 as part of CSE 1/2011.

He later enrolled in the Ghana Air Force Aviation College (GHAFAC) in 2012, to pursue his career in the Air Force as an Aircraft Technician and successfully graduated in the year 2016 as part of Course 10.

He was an airman at the Tamale Base and was later posted on attachment to the Takoradi Base to work on the Z9 (No. 8 Heli Wing).

His hard work and zeal as a technician on the Z-9 were one of the beautiful ways he could express his love for the aviation industry.

Sgt. Mensah was loved and admired by a lot of people because he showed true passion in his line of duty.

He always had a smile on his face even when things looked a bit disturbing.

His advice to the younger ones was, “NEVER GIVE UP AND DO NOT LOSE HOPE IN YOUR CAREER PATH BECAUSE NOTHING COMES OUT WELL IN NEGATIVITY, BUT WITH A POSITIVE MINDSET YOU WILL ATTAIN YOUR AIM.”

He was particularly fond of the young female technicians. He was dedicated to ensuring that the few who dared to venture into the aviation technician field were mentored well and encouraged to stay.

Ernest was a man of deep faith. You had a conviction that no obstacle could derail a man from his purpose for which God has ordained for him in life.

Your life revolved around your deep faith and belief in your creator. You always had a testimony to share about the divine providence of God.

For you, the only way a man could show gratitude to his maker was by being a diligent worker.

You embodied the ideals of what service to God and country represented. The No. 8 Heli Wing has lost an invaluable technician and a brother in arms.

It is our hope that all the young ones you trained would rise to the challenge and fill the void your passing has created.

Sergeant Mensah, the Ghana Air Force is forever indebted to you. You paid the ultimate price with your life.

Your life’s work and achievement would be etched in the history of the Service. For every lift off and touch down we register, it would be dedicated to the angels of the No.8 Heli Wing.

You have played your part, now rest in the bosom of the Most High God.

Rest Thee Well.
Sgt.t Mensah Addo Ernest.
Till We Meet Again.

GAF cautions media against speculation on helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-cautions-media-against-speculation-on-helicopter-crash/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 08:00:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566516 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has appealed to media professionals, commentators, bloggers, and content creators to avoid spreading unverified or speculative information regarding the recent military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement signed by Captain (GN) V. A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the GAF expressed concern over “numerous speculative and unsubstantiated commentaries” about the Z-9 Air Force helicopter incident.

“For the sake of the bereaved families and loved ones, the Armed Forces urges media practitioners, panellists, social commentators, bloggers, and content creators to be circumspect in their reportage as a way of according respect to the memories of the fallen heroes and to mitigate the sorrows of the bereaved families,” the statement said.

The Armed Forces acknowledged the heightened public interest in the tragedy but assured that a detailed investigation is underway, with input from international agencies, to determine the cause of the crash.

“At this point in time, any purported conclusions based on opinions, perceptions, and conjectures will be premature and misleading. The public is therefore advised to be wary of such reportage,” the statement cautioned.

The GAF also expressed gratitude to the government, institutions, and individuals who have shown support during this period of national mourning and extended its deepest sympathies to the grieving families. “May the souls of our patriots continue to rest in peace,” it concluded.

Soldiers comb Dampia Forest for crashed helicopter wreckage https://www.adomonline.com/soldiers-comb-dampia-forest-for-crashed-helicopter-wreckage/ Fri, 08 Aug 2025 14:19:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565082 Officers of the Ghana Armed Forces and aviation experts continue to comb the Dampia Range Forest Reserve to retrieve the wreckage of the Z-9 military helicopter as part of ongoing investigations.

Two cabinet ministers and six others, including the crew onboard the military aircraft en route to Obuasi from Accra, perished in the fatal crash in the Adansi town of Brofoyeduru.

President John Mahama, in a televised address last night, confirmed the recovery of the “Black Box”, a flight recorder which contains cockpit audio recordings to facilitate investigations into the circumstances which led to the fatal crash.

But some local farmers are complaining of starvation because the investigations have denied them access to their farms, as some farmlands are cordoned off to pave the way for the investigations.

“Now we buy food from the street shops. Rice, gari, among others, are what we buy. If they allow us into the farms, we will be able to harvest our foodstuff,” one of the residents said on Friday.

MP for Akrofrom, Joseph Azumah, told JoyNews that one of the residents had handed over a watch he picked from the scene when they responded on the day of the tragic crash.

“We are happy that one of them brought a watch… we have handed it over to the leader of the team who is currently here,” he added.

The legislator further urged the community members to continue to cooperate with the security forces on site.

The fatal crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of:

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment

Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

Mr Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary candidate

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

Flying Officer Twum Ampadu

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

The helicopter on an anti-illegal mining mission from Accra to Obuasi, crashed under still-unclear circumstances.

In response, President Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, appointing Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson as acting Defence Minister, and the Lands and Natural Resources Minister as acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

A statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the GAF, said the bodies have since been taken to the 37 Military Hospital to begin burial preparations.

“We express our gratitude to the people of Sikaman and all security services for their cooperation during the recovery operation,” the statement noted.

The tragic crash has sparked widespread grief across the country, with many mourning the deaths of servicemen and officials who died in the line of duty.

According to the Association, the GAF must publish the names, ranks, and photos of the soldiers involved in the incident or risk the GJA doing so independently.

The incident occurred during a demolition exercise at businessman McDan’s warehouse along the Spintex Road, where JoyNews’ Carlos Carlony and an eyewitness were allegedly attacked by soldiers while carrying out their duties.

At a press conference on Thursday, GJA President Albert Dwumfuor condemned the assault, describing it as a deliberate attempt to suppress information and intimidate the media.

“These actions are unjustifiable and undermine press freedom,” he said. “We are giving the Ghana Armed Forces seven days to publish the identities of the officers involved. If they fail, we will not hesitate to release their names, ranks, and photos on the front pages of major newspapers.”

The development has intensified calls for accountability and renewed debate about the safety of journalists in Ghana.

Defence Minister announces $1bn retooling for Ghana Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/defence-minister-announces-1bn-retooling-for-ghana-armed-forces/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 06:55:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558231 The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has outlined a 15-point vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of efforts to enhance its capabilities and readiness.

Among the 15 points, vision is a one-billion-dollar investment to modernise GAF over three and a half years.

Others are advanced tactical vehicles, body armour, and digital communication systems for the Army and maritime enhancement.

Dr Omane Boamah stated this when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series for the first half of the year at the Presidency in Accra.

The Government Accountability Series is being organised by the Presidency Communications Bureau as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

The rest of the three-and-a-half-year vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces includes new air assets, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), for the Ghana Air Force to operate effectively and the construction of 10,000 housing units across all garrisons.

Others are enlistment and recruitment to increase the manpower strength of the Ghana Armed Forces by 12,000 over the next three and a half years and strengthening bilateral and multilateral alliances.

The rest are enhancing local production through Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DHOC) and aligning defence strategy with national development goals.

Regarding security challenges, he cited threats such as chieftaincy, illegal mining (galamsey), violent extremism with foresight and readiness, and preparing for floods, droughts, and food security.

The Minister mentioned promoting diversity and inclusion in the Armed Forces, ensuring the well-being of veterans through the Mahama Cares, building more health facilities, and additional funding from DHOC.

On National Service, Dr Omane Boamah said they would be training 10,000 youth in disaster preparedness and patriotism.

Touching on national unity and progress, Dr Omane Boamah emphasised collective responsibility and unity for Ghana’s progress.

“As we stand at the threshold of a new era, the Mahama Second Coming, and resetting Ghana, let us remember that our strength lies in not just our arms, but in our unity, our resilience, and our unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress,” the Minister said.

“Today, we have outlined a vision for a modernised, industrialised, and inclusive defence sector that serves as a beacon of hope and stability in our region,” Dr Omane Boamah stated.

“Let us march forward together with Ghana Armed Forces as our guardians of peace and architects of prosperity.”

He encouraged Ghanaians to march forward together with the Ghana Armed Forces as their guardians of peace and architects of prosperity.

He further appealed to Ghanaians to uphold the sacred covenant to protect every Ghanaian and propel their nation towards a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future.

He said Ghanaians must recognise that defence went beyond the booths, barracks, and borders, because it affected everything.

“Security is the seabed of progress. Let our guiding principles be one Ghana, one destiny.”

The Minister reiterated that modernised, expanded, responsive and happier Military was the goal.

He underscored that Ghana Armed Forces service was not only a duty, stating that it was a national covenant.

U.S. donates $6m armoured vehicles to boost Ghana’s defence capabilities https://www.adomonline.com/u-s-donates-6m-armoured-vehicles-to-boost-ghanas-defence-capabilities/ Mon, 12 May 2025 06:36:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2534012 The United States government has donated 14 mine-resistant, ambush-protected armoured personnel carriers (APCs) worth over $6 million to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in a move expected to significantly enhance the country’s counter-terrorism and border security operations.

The official handover ceremony took place at Burma Camp in Accra, marking what both nations described as a deepening of bilateral defense cooperation and long-standing security ties.

The Puma M36 vehicles are designed to offer enhanced troop protection and mobility in high-risk environments, boosting Ghana’s operational readiness in responding to emerging security threats and safeguarding its territorial integrity.

More than 40 Ghanaian soldiers have received specialized training over the past four weeks on the operation and maintenance of the vehicles.

Speaking at the event, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Virginia Palmer, described the donation as a symbol of enduring partnership rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to peace and stability.

“These APCs support the GAF’s mission of ensuring peace and border integrity, which makes both Ghana and the United States safer,” Ambassador Palmer stated.

“They are part of a broader commitment that includes continued training and joint operations.”

She praised Ghana’s leadership in regional security, particularly along its northern frontiers, and highlighted its contributions to multinational peacekeeping efforts, including operations such as Flintlock and African Lion.

The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, expressed deep gratitude to the U.S. government, calling the donation “generous and strategic.”

“This occasion is not just a symbol of the enduring partnership between our two countries. It is a tangible expression of our shared commitment to peace, stability, and security within Ghana and across the West African sub-region,” Dr. Boamah said.

He commended the professionalism of the GAF and encouraged personnel to uphold a renewed sense of duty and responsibility in executing their mission.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, representatives from the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), and members of the diplomatic community.

The event coincided with Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), marking the end of World War II in Europe, further emphasizing the global significance of security cooperation.

The donation adds to a growing list of U.S. military support to Ghana in recent years, which includes the provision of patrol boats, mobile field hospitals, and critical infrastructure to reinforce the country’s defense systems.

An ode to now (Rtd) Brigadier-General Aggrey Quashie: A legacy of service and PR excellence https://www.adomonline.com/an-ode-to-now-rtd-brigadier-general-aggrey-quashie-a-legacy-of-service-and-pr-excellence/ Fri, 02 May 2025 11:52:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531006 After 31 years of distinguished service, Brigadier-General Quashie officially retired from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking the end of a remarkable career that has been characterized by both military prowess and unparalleled professionalism in communication.

He leaves behind not just a legacy of military achievements but a profound impact on the way the Armed Forces interact with the public.

It’s with great admiration and deep respect that I reflect on the retirement of Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, a man whose service to the GAF and his exemplary leadership in the military’s public relations department will forever be remembered.

A legacy of service to Ghana

Brigadier-General Quashie’s journey with the Ghana Armed Forces began three decades ago.

Throughout his illustrious career, he served in various capacities and earned the respect of his peers, subordinates, and the public alike.

His strength as a military officer was undeniable, but it was his role as a communicator and leader of the GAF Public Relations (PR) Directorate that truly set him apart.

For 10 years, he led the PR outfit with distinction, transforming how the Armed Forces communicated with the public.

His tenure as the head of the directorate marked a turning point for the GAF, moving from a military institution primarily concerned with internal affairs to a more transparent and outward-facing entity that bridged the gap between the military and the Ghanaian people.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Brigadier-General Quashie was the face of the GAF’s communication efforts, shaping the narrative and ensuring that the public was informed, engaged, and connected to the work of the Armed Forces.

Suffice it to say that he took some verbal bullets while doing this, but as the gallant soldier that he was, he took them in his stride and soldiered on.

A master of Public Relations: Bringing GAF closer to the people

What stands out most about Brigadier-General Quashie is his ability to blend his military discipline with a keen understanding of public relations.

He was more than just an officer – he was a consummate PR professional who understood the delicate balance of promoting the image of the military while maintaining its necessary confidentiality.

His ability to handle crises with grace, communicate effectively in times of conflict, and foster positive public relations with the media was second to none.

I had the privilege of working closely with him over the years, and I can say with certainty that Brigadier-General Quashie was a rare combination of military authority and PR acumen.

His proactive approach to communication was truly groundbreaking. He didn’t wait for the media to approach the GAF with questions or concerns – he went to them.

His strategy was simple but effective: stay ahead of the story, address issues before they became problems, and always maintain an open line of communication with the public.

Under his leadership, the GAF became more transparent, more approachable, and more respected than ever before.

He understood that in today’s world, the military must not only be capable in defense matters but also trustworthy and relatable in its dealings with the public.

His work fostered a sense of trust between the GAF and the Ghanaian people, reminding us all that the military is not a distant entity but a part of the community, there to protect and serve.

A man of character and integrity

Beyond his professional achievements, Brigadier-General Quashie is someone who commands respect simply by the way he carries himself.

As a leader, he exuded integrity, humility, and a sense of duty that inspired all who worked with him. He was approachable, understanding, and genuinely invested in the well-being of his colleagues and the soldiers under his command.

His leadership style was a fine balance of strength and kindness, earning him the admiration of both the senior leadership and the troops.

In every interaction, he showed the true meaning of service. His ability to listen, his commitment to the mission, and his unshakable sense of responsibility made him a role model for many, both in and out of the military.

Brigadier-General Quashie will be remembered not only for the milestones he achieved in his career but for the way he made people feel valued and heard.

A well-deserved retirement

As Brigadier-General Quashie embarks on his well-deserved retirement, it is impossible to ignore the mark he has left on the Ghana Armed Forces and the broader community.

While the military will no longer be guided by his steady hand in the PR Directorate, the lessons he instilled – of transparency, trust, and effective communication – will continue to shape the GAF for years to come.

Personally, I will always remember Brigadier-General Quashie not just for his professional excellence but for the warmth and humility he brought to everything he did.

He showed us all that leadership is not about position or title but about the impact you have on others.

His retirement marks the end of an era for the Ghana Armed Forces, but his legacy will endure.

Thank you, Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, for your 31 years of service, for your extraordinary work in public relations, and for the positive impact you’ve made on the Ghana Armed Forces and the country at large.

Your legacy will live on, and you will always be respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing you.

In honouring him today, we celebrate not just the military officer, but the man – a true patriot who gave his all for Ghana.

Wishing Brigadier-General Quashie a fulfilling retirement filled with peace, joy, and continued service to his community.

CDS announces release of all 2-Star Generals from Ghana Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/cds-announces-release-of-all-2-star-generals-from-ghana-armed-forces/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 16:11:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530061 The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Major General William Agyapong, hosted a gathering of all Two-Star Generals in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at his office in Burma Camp on Monday, April 28, 2025.

At the meeting, the CDS expressed his appreciation and admiration for the Generals’ exceptional professionalism and dedicated service to the country.

He extended gratitude on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the Ghana Armed Forces.

He then informed the Generals that, to aid command and control in the Armed Forces, many of them present would be honourably released from service in accordance with Ghana Armed Forces regulations.

The Commandant of the National College of Defence Studies, Major General Irvine Aryeetey, speaking on behalf of the Generals, said the current changes in the Military High Command structure were not unusual but consistent with the history and tradition of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He explained that, as tradition demands, new intakes succeed their predecessors. He cited the transition from then-CDS Lieutenant General O.B. Akwa to Vice Admiral S. Amoama as an example—five intakes apart (Intakes 18 and 23). Similarly, the change between Vice Admiral S. Amoama and General Thomas Oppong-Peprah involved three intakes (Intakes 23 and 26).

He concluded that the current change in command between the immediate past CDS, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the current CDS, Major General William Agyapong—four intakes apart—was well within military tradition.

He expressed gratitude to the CDS for formally inviting and honouring them, describing the gesture as a novelty.

The meeting concluded with a luncheon hosted by the CDS, during which he wished the outgoing Generals well in their future endeavours.

Also present at the meeting were the Service Chiefs and the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied claims purporting an attack on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu in Bawku of the Upper East Region.

GAF has dismissed viral videos from the alleged attack as false and should be treated with the contempt that they deserve.

In a statement, GAF confirmed that Major General Gbetanu visited Bawku on Wednesday, April 23, as part of a scheduled operational tour, and it was peaceful.

“COAS’ operational visit to Bawku on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, was successful and no negative incident was recorded,” the statement noted.

Admonishing media outlets, bloggers, and other content creators to verify information before publication, GAF noted that investigations are underway to identify and prosecute the originators of the videos.

“GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators, and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations, especially in Bawku,” the statement added.

The development was confirmed in a statement by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following reports of sporadic gunshots near the Binduri Central Market in the early hours of Monday.

A joint team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, with support from the Police, swiftly moved to the scene.

During the operation, security personnel retrieved an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, an empty M16 magazine, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Later the same day, the military thwarted an attempt by unidentified gunmen to infiltrate Binduri. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the armed men and security personnel, forcing the attackers to retreat.

Meanwhile, GAF says troops remain on high alert to respond to any further disturbances, although calm has been restored in the area.

The Force further assured the public that it is working closely with other security agencies to support peace efforts in Bawku.

It also urged residents and the general public to cooperate with security personnel and support ongoing efforts to restore normalcy.

GAF embark on ‘surgical’ anti-galamsey operations [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-embark-on-surgical-anti-galamsey-operations-photos/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 08:24:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525394 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have commenced a series of targeted anti-galamsey operations across all three Commands in a renewed effort to clamp down on illegal mining activities in protected areas.

These “surgical” operations, aimed at minimising collateral damage while dealing effectively with the menace, form part of a broader national strategy to preserve the environment and water bodies.

The operations were carefully coordinated to tackle galamsey operations simultaneously across the Northern, Central, and Southern Commands.

In the Northern Command, the military focused its operations in Bole and along the Black Volta Basin, areas which have seen a surge in illegal mining activities in recent months.

The troops were tasked with dismantling mining camps and seizing equipment used by the illegal operators.

These interventions are expected to curb the continued pollution of vital water bodies and protect farmlands that have been adversely affected by the destructive mining practices.

The Central Command’s operation was concentrated within the Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves, where several galamsey sites were uncovered.

Troops moved in swiftly to destroy makeshift shelters used by the miners and seize excavators and other mining machinery found at the scene.

These forest reserves, known for their ecological importance, have been under threat from illegal mining, and the GAF’s actions were welcomed by local authorities and environmental groups.

Meanwhile, the Southern Command carried out similar operations in the Jerusalem enclave and the Subri Forest Reserve.

The operations led to the seizure of multiple excavators and related equipment, as well as the demolition of illegal structures erected by miners within the reserves.

The GAF reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies, and urged the public to support the ongoing fight against illegal mining.

Gov’t moves to avert food crisis in Ghana Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/govt-moves-to-avert-food-crisis-in-ghana-armed-forces/ Fri, 28 Mar 2025 16:33:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519939

The government has pledged to take immediate steps to prevent an imminent food crisis in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) due to an outstanding GH₵275 million debt owed to food suppliers since August 2023.

President John Mahama made this assurance when the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, and other Service Chiefs paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House on Friday.

He stated that the Ministries of Finance and Defence are working together to clear the current bills and implement measures to settle the outstanding debt.

“This year, we have allocated over GH₵6.7 billion to the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces. As we turn the economy around, you can rest assured that your budgetary allocation will further increase to secure new platforms and assets to enhance your operations,” Mahama said.

On the broader financial challenges facing the Armed Forces, the President acknowledged a debt burden of around GH₵3.7 billion but expressed confidence that, through innovation and dedication, the military would be modernized and expanded.

“We are already working to fix the imminent food crisis that could have affected the Ghana Armed Forces due to the GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers for the past 17 months,” he added.

Mahama also highlighted the contribution of the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited to Ghana’s agricultural development, noting that the disciplined workforce and strategic land holdings of the GAF could help enhance food security in the country.

He urged the military to explore innovative financing solutions to improve infrastructure, training, and accommodation.

“I will be by your side every step of the way. We are already planning to upgrade the Asutsuare Training Camp into a first-class training facility,” he stated.

The President also called on GAF to take decisive action against illegal mining and continue their efforts to maintain peace in Bawku and other conflict-prone areas.

“I know our personnel are deployed in Bawku and other areas for internal security operations, dealing with ethnic and chieftaincy disputes. While we work on resolving these disputes through mediation, judicial intervention, and community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, the Armed Forces must continue to play their part in maintaining peace. I trust you to deliver,” he said.

Mahama further expressed confidence in the military’s leadership, stating, “I am confident that you will all work tirelessly to ensure that our Armed Forces serve with unity, resilience, and pride. I wish the new CDS and the chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces a successful tenure as you protect and defend our dear nation.”

Ghana Armed Forces begins distribution of food supplies to SHSs https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-armed-forces-begins-distribution-of-food-supplies-to-shss/ Sat, 18 Jan 2025 11:51:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494397 Former Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Clement Apaak, has confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces has commenced the distribution of food supplies from warehouses to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.

President John Mahama had earlier ordered the distribution of food meant for victims of last year’s drought in the northern part of the country to be redirected to schools.

This initiative follows concerns over food shortages in schools and aims to provide immediate relief to students and staff.

In an interview on Joy FM‘s Newsnight, the Builsa South MP, disclosed this development after visiting Tema with representatives from the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service.

“I can tell you that the process has begun, okay, that by the end of next week, all schools should receive the quantities of rice they deserve, so we are prioritising,” he said.

“The trucks have started moving. The slight delay was due to awaiting detailed information from the Ministry of Education and the GES regarding breakdowns of quantities, locations, and contact persons. Security arrangements were also essential, especially given recent instances of cargo attacks.”

Dr Apaak confirmed that distribution to Greater Accra schools would begin immediately, with schools close to Accra receiving their allocations tonight. Schools far away from the capital will have their supplies dispatched over the coming days, he added.

Additionally, he noted that the military and police trucks are providing logistical support to ensure the safe and timely delivery of these supplies.

While the current effort addresses immediate food shortages, Dr Apaak acknowledged the need for sustainable solutions. He noted that the Chief of Staff, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Education, is working to allocate resources that will empower headmasters to independently procure food supplies in the future.

“This is a short-term measure. In the medium to long term, the processes initiated by the Chief of Staff and the relevant ministries should enable headmasters to procure food for their schools. We expect the requisite resources to be available within a week,” he added.

Dr Apaak also referenced former President John Mahama’s pledge to implement a sustainable food supply plan for schools, emphasizing its potential to resolve such crises permanently.

This follows the widespread reports of food shortages in various senior high schools forcing the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) to appeal to parents and guardians to supplement their children’s food supplies, as the National Food Suppliers Association cites its inability to deliver food to schools.

The suppliers blame the situation on the absence of a clear payment plan and uncertainty over whether the current administration will honour arrangements made by the previous government.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) Primus Baro, told JoyNews the government would by the close of Friday, January 17, release funds to support the feeding of senior high school students for 31 days only.

According to him, the fund is an emergency intervention by the government following the food shortage faced by the various SHSs nationwide.

“It was for 31 days as instructed by the president and beyond, and when we are able to deal with the issue as it is now I believe it would be a clear direction as to what can be done going forward,” he said.

Out of the 18 food items needed in the schools, only two are available for distribution, hence the expected release of the funds to cater for the rest.

We’ve no plans for coup – Ghana Armed Forces https://www.adomonline.com/weve-no-plans-for-coup-ghana-armed-forces/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 21:47:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2438045 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed claims by the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, suggesting threats to take control of the country if electoral violence escalated beyond the capacity of the Ghana Police Service.

In a statement, GAF noted Dr Akwetey cited a press conference held in 2016 and 2020.

However, GAF has clarified that it has never held a press conference, declaring such intentions, nor does it have any plans to stage a coup.

The statement emphasised that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service when assistance is requested, which should not be construed as an intention to overthrow the government.

The Force has therefore reiterated its commitment to upholding the democratic process and resisting any attempts, by individuals or groups, to unlawfully seize power.

GAF has also called on civil society organizations(CSOs) and the media to avoid using its name in ways that could inflame political tensions.

Meanwhile, GAF says it looks forward to a peaceful election on December 7 and cautioned against associating the military with actions that could exacerbate political tensions in the country.

NDC criticizes military’s response to viral video of MP inciting attacks on soldiers https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-criticizes-militarys-response-to-viral-video-of-mp-inciting-attacks-on-soldiers/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 06:31:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407905 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for what they perceive as a lackluster response to a viral video that allegedly incites illegal miners to attack soldiers.

The video, which features Mr. Ernest Frimpong, the Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Amenfi East Constituency, has sparked outrage for its content, where Frimpong reportedly encourages miners to retaliate against military personnel found at their mining sites.

According to the NDC, Mr. Frimpong in the video claims that the government has suspended all anti-galamsey operations, including Operation GalamStop, Operation Vanguard, and Operation Halt I & II, thus giving miners a “green light” to continue their activities without interference from law enforcement.

Furthermore, he allegedly promises to set up a WhatsApp platform involving local officials to alert miners of any impending patrols by soldiers or police.

The controversy intensified following a recent attack on a soldier at Wassa Akyempim, occurring just 72 hours after the video surfaced.

This incident prompted a release from the GAF on June 10, 2024, but the NDC argues that the response was inadequate.

The GAF’s statement, signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, was criticized for its failure to directly address or condemn the actions and comments of Mr. Frimpong.

In their statement, the NDC expressed disappointment in the GAF’s reluctance to directly call out Frimpong by name, accusing the military of being influenced by political considerations.

They argue that the GAF’s approach could undermine public respect for the military and may lead to further conflicts between civilians and soldiers.

The NDC’s statement spoke on the need for the GAF to act decisively and transparently. They urge the military to lodge an official report with the police against Mr. Frimpong and to take a firm stance against incitements to violence.

The NDC warns that failure to address these issues might escalate tensions and contribute to more attacks on military personnel.

Highlighting past incidents where soldiers have been harmed in civilian confrontations, the NDC stressed the importance of maintaining the military’s integrity and discipline.

They cited the tragic deaths of Major Mahama, Private Imoro Sherrif, and Lance Corporal Michael Danso as examples of the dangers faced by soldiers in such conflicts.

In their closing remarks, the NDC declared their intention to file an official complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to ensure that those responsible for the incitement and subsequent attack are held accountable.

They called on the GAF to uphold their duty to protect their personnel and to act impartially in the face of political pressures.

The party’s statement also calls on the public to support the military in upholding law and order while urging the GAF to enforce discipline and justice within their ranks.

GAF cautions public against assault on soldiers https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-cautions-public-against-assault-on-soldiers/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 23:14:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407426 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to the public following the circulation of viral videos on social media calling for attacks on soldiers and other security personnel.

GAF strongly condemns any incitement to violence against its members, reminding that  such actions are unlawful and threaten national security and stability.

In a public statement, GAF underscored its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s security and protecting civilians while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.

The statement also reassured the public that any misconduct by soldiers should be reported to the nearest police station or military barracks for appropriate disciplinary action, rather than resorting to violence.

The Armed Forces reminded the public that soldiers, like all individuals, have the right to self-defense when faced with imminent threats.

In situations where soldiers encounter immediate threats or acts of violence, they are permitted to use necessary and proportionate force to protect themselves and others.

GAF cautioned that the outcomes of such confrontations could be dire and stressed the importance of avoiding them.

GAF reiterated that attacking or assaulting soldiers is a serious offense punishable by law, urging all citizens to respect, cooperate with, and support the Armed Forces.

The statement called for public cooperation to refrain from engaging in or encouraging acts of violence against soldiers.

The Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed its dedication to the values of professionalism, integrity, and service to the nation, and its collaboration with other security agencies to protect Ghana’s interests while respecting citizens’ rights and dignity.

GAF encouraged the public to channel their concerns or grievances through the Department of Public Relations, maintaining an open-door policy to address issues constructively.

The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, 12 April 2024.

According to a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp, Accra, a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy was targeted by a crowd participating in the festival.

Responding to the escalating situation, the Naval personnel intervened and apprehended three suspects believed to be involved in the attack.

This prompted the Ghana Armed Forces to take decisive action to safeguard the Base and its sensitive installations.

Coalition of La Associations bares teeth at GAF https://www.adomonline.com/coalition-of-la-associations-bares-teeth-at-gaf/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 22:24:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2368236 The Coalition of La Associations (COLA) is up in arms with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) over a portion of the Burma Camp land.

The specific land in contention is 114 acres around Kpeletso/East Airport La which was reportedly released to the Traditional Council.

In an earlier statement, GAF warned the general public to stay away from all of its lands, following the performance of customary rites to signify reclamation.

The statement acknowledged there are ongoing discussions by a committee set up by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to deliberate and recommend possible measures to resolve the land issue.

However, GAF said that it has not received any directives from the Ministry of Defence, which is its supervising Ministry, directing that the land should be released to the La Traditional Council.

But COLA has described GAF’s statement as misleading and unfortunate, stating the Force is aware of steps to acquire 140 acres of the land at Kpeletso and also the 114-acre was ceded to the La Stool.

It added there was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) after years of deliberations and the grant of mutual concessions.

“The Ghana Armed Forces cannot pretend not to be aware of the deliberations and documentation executed in respect of the land,” the statement read in parts.

COLA has said it is their expectation that GAF acts in fairness and in accordance with the law and respect the rights of the La Stool for peaceful co-existence.

“Any action contrary to this will be illegal, unlawful and recipe for chaos,” the statement warned.

The General Officer Commanding Central Command, Brigadier General Charles Agyemang-Prempeh has admonished Ghanaians to swiftly release information to the security services anytime they identify suspicious characters in the society.

He said the move is part of the Interior Ministry’s “If you see something, say something” campaign.

The Commander made this call during a military raid operation conducted by officers of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Ambulance Service.

According to JoyNews‘ correspondent, Anass Sabit, the team went out in full force to rescue four Ghanaians kidnapped by a suspected terrorist group allegedly hiding at the outskirts of Techiman and whose members are said to be foreigners.

After the successful operation, the team from the Ghana Police Service, the Immigration Service and the Ambulance Service were called to duty to arrest the suspects as well as provide medical assistance to the injured who were shot in the process.

Brigadier General Agyemang-Prempeh stated that a raid is conducted when any civilian has been captured by a rebel or undesirable elements in the society who keep them for ransom, or to undermine the strength of the security forces.

He emphasised the need for a successful operation without harming victims and called on Ghanaians to look out for persons who portray odd behaviours in the society.

“Our message to them is that we depend on them for information because they live in the area and know who come in as strangers and are going to do anything bad so anything that they see that is suspicious and of security interest, they should inform their local leaders even if they can’t go to the police station or the security agencies.”

He further noted that these leaders will relay the information to the security agencies to take proactive measures to contain any undesirable situation in the society.

The Commanding Officer of the Ghana Army also added that the recent spike in security crisis in neigbouring West African countries serves as a signal for internal security alert.

Brigadier General Agyemang-Prempeh called for enough measures to be taken to help contain the situation, particularly along the country’s borders.

GAF warns public against use of military-pattern uniforms, accoutrements for protests https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-warns-public-against-use-of-military-pattern-uniforms-accoutrements-for-protests/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 15:52:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2305193 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned the general public against wearing military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements during protests.

GAF has described the act as unlawful, as such individuals may wrongly be perceived as its personnel.

In a statement, GAF bemoaned that the behaviour if not ceased, will draw its image into disrepute.

“The probability for these individuals being wrongly perceived to be GAF personnel has the propensity of drawing the image of GAF into disrepute. Conversely, these unauthorised acts are in contravention of the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which is still in force.”

“This Decree in part states that “no person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, accoutrements, or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana,” the statement explained.

Serving notice to clamp down on such individuals, GAF indicated despite continuous education on the subject, the trend appears to be on the increase, citing the recently held 3-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

“During the recent demonstrations in Accra by Democracy Hub and other groups, it was observed that some protesters and persons purported to be providing private security to some dignitaries were dressed in military-pattern camouflage uniforms and other accoutrements,” it warned.

Meanwhile, GAF is seeking the cooperation of the general public to curb the use of military uniforms and accoutrements, especially during future protests.
