Speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Ghana Military Academy on January 30, the president said the government has taken strong security and enforcement measures to protect the country’s forests and water bodies from further destruction.

According to him, several forest reserves and major river bodies have been declared security zones, with permanent military bases established in key affected areas to deter illegal mining activities.

“Forests and river bodies have been declared security zones. Permanent military bases have been established, and offenders have been arrested and are being prosecuted,” President Mahama stated.

He noted that government interventions are already yielding results, with some polluted rivers showing signs of recovery.

“Rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin are gradually recovering,” he said.

The president stressed that the fight against galamsey remains a top national priority and will not be compromised under any circumstances.

“Let me be clear, illegal mining will continue to be confronted decisively and without fear or favour,” he declared.

However, President Mahama emphasised that winning the battle against illegal mining requires collective national effort, describing the fight as a shared responsibility that goes beyond government alone.

“This fight requires national unity. It is a moral, civic, and generational duty, and I call on all Ghanaians to stand together to restore and protect our land,” he said.

President Mahama reiterated that his administration remains resolute in restoring Ghana’s environment and safeguarding natural resources for present and future generations.

I even rejected undercover offers – Aowin MCE on “galamsey” involvement [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/i-even-rejected-undercover-offers-aowin-mce-on-galamsey-involvement-listen/ Thu, 29 Jan 2026 13:50:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2625223 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Aowin, Stephen Morcher, has firmly denied claims linking him to illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, insisting that he has always rejected such practices.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the MCE recounted a recent incident where a journalist allegedly sent two individuals undercover to his office, offering him money to facilitate galamsey operations.

“They came to my office asking me to help them engage in galamsey, and I rejected them. Even the journalist called me two weeks ago to congratulate me for saying no twice. So why would I ever do galamsey?” Mr. Morcher quizzed.

Mr. Morcher further explained that his background and family heritage reinforce his commitment to protecting the environment.

“By the grace of God, my father is the Paramount Chief of Aowin and has reigned for about 27 years. We have walked the forests, know the rivers and water bodies, and would never destroy them. I am a royal and well respected. We know the importance of protecting our forest, so why would I destroy it?”

He also challenged anyone who might doubt his integrity.

“If people come with galamsey issues, I always make an effort to reject them or ensure that those involved are arrested. No one can link me to galamsey. Even if you ask around, they will tell you I am very clean and not involved.”

The MCE’s comments come after he has been alleged to be involved in illegal mining activities in the municipality.

He used the opportunity to appeal to residents to remain calm, assuring them of his unwavering commitment to environmental protection and good governance.

“We must all work together to protect our land and rivers. I am committed to serving the people of Aowin and ensuring that our natural resources are preserved for future generations,” he added.

Aowin MCE accuses deputy NaDMO boss of rogue anti-galamsey operations https://www.adomonline.com/aowin-mce-accuses-deputy-nadmo-boss-of-rogue-anti-galamsey-operations/ Thu, 29 Jan 2026 13:40:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2625190 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Aowin, Stephen Morcher, has dismissed claims circulating in a viral video suggesting he endorses illegal mining activities and ordered the release of seized equipment to galamsey operators.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Morcher described the allegations as misleading and politically motivated, insisting he has never supported illegal mining in the municipality.

“The whole video is funny because it alleges that I’m embezzling galamsey funds and supporting it,” he said, responding to claims made by Maxwell Quaicoe, a deputy coordinator with NADMO.

Mr. Morcher explained that Mr. Quaicoe had formed what he called a private task force without official authorisation. The group reportedly included two military officers and individuals he described as unrecognised “water guards” who had not yet been formally handed over to the district assembly.

He further alleged that the team included persons linked to Oscar Ofori Larbi, the Member of Parliament for the area, Clement Ohene Asare, and Abdallah Rufus Dadzie, using the MP’s vehicle during operations. “These two are the MP’s guys and they are using the MP’s vehicle, so you can see where this may be coming from,” Mr. Morcher said.

According to the MCE, he first became aware of the anti-galamsey operation on January 6 after receiving a call, which he initially thought was from a recognised security unit. He even encouraged the team to work without interference. However, he later discovered that the group was not officially sanctioned.

“Two hours later I was told the identity of the taskforce. I learnt they were extorting money, so I called the District Commander and asked him to deploy his men to the scene to arrest or stop them,” he explained.

Mr. Morcher said the police indicated they did not have enough personnel at the time, prompting the assembly to rely on military officers periodically deployed to protect the municipality’s borders. Because the officers were unfamiliar with the terrain, he instructed his driver and personal assistant to guide them using his official Toyota Hilux.

“They went to meet them and were arrested, and then they started shouting that I am endorsing galamsey,” he added.

The MCE said he has since submitted formal reports to both the Regional Minister and the Ghana Police Service, questioning who authorised the task force’s activities. “I don’t know who authorised him because his bosses have said they did not sanction the operation. They have queried him and he is at risk of suspension,” Mr. Morcher disclosed.

He also revealed that the two military officers involved were allegedly part of a private security arrangement protecting a large-scale mining company, Clean Jobs Mining, and not a state-led operation. According to him, the company has since apologised and promised disciplinary action against the officers, including the possibility of withdrawing their services.

“They have officially come to apologise and, if possible, withdraw their services,” he said.

Mr. Morcher further announced that the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has invited all parties for a meeting to resolve the matter. “The Ashanti Regional Minister has invited us, and on Friday we will go and meet him,” he confirmed.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to fighting illegal mining in Aowin and warned against unauthorised operations that exploit the galamsey fight for personal gain. “Our focus is to protect the land and the people, not to allow individuals to hide behind task forces to extort money,” he stressed.

Minority blames GoldBod for rise in galamsey activities https://www.adomonline.com/minority-blames-goldbod-for-rise-in-galamsey-activities/ Mon, 26 Jan 2026 12:39:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2623754 The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of contributing to the recent surge in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, following the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking at the Minority Caucus’ “Holding Government to Account” press conference, Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, said the government has failed to clearly outline its policy direction and concrete measures for tackling illegal mining.

He questioned the role of GoldBod in the fight against galamsey, arguing that the board has not demonstrated how it differentiates between legally mined gold and gold sourced from illicit operations.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the government appears more focused on public relations than decisive action, pointing to the continued pollution of the country’s water bodies as evidence of a lack of genuine commitment.

While the Minority does not oppose the Gold-for-Reserves policy introduced by the previous administration, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that GoldBod’s dual role as both regulator and operator could be indirectly encouraging galamsey activities.

The Minority insists that without clear safeguards and transparency in GoldBod’s operations, efforts to combat illegal mining will remain ineffective.

“Our water bodies are being polluted, and even organised labour has raised concerns that galamsey activities have worsened,” he said.

“Today, we do not know whether GoldBod distinguishes between legally mined gold and illicit gold. All we hear are success stories about the tons of gold they have purchased,” he added.

Minority accuses government of encouraging galamsey through GoldBod https://www.adomonline.com/minority-accuses-government-of-encouraging-galamsey-through-goldbod/ Mon, 26 Jan 2026 12:33:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2623764 The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of indirectly promoting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, through the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking at the Minority Caucus’ “Holding Government to Account” press conference, Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticised the government for failing to clearly outline its policy direction or concrete measures to tackle illicit mining.

He questioned the role of GoldBod, arguing that the agency has not shown how it distinguishes between legally mined gold and gold sourced from illegal operations.

“The establishment of GoldBod as both a regulator and operator is, in a way, directly encouraging galamsey activities,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He further accused the government of prioritising public relations over meaningful action, citing the worsening state of Ghana’s water bodies as evidence of its inaction.

“Our water bodies are being polluted. Organised Labour has raised the alarm that galamsey activities have intensified. Yet, the government has failed to provide proof of real progress in combating this menace,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin also weighed in on the controversial Gold-for-Reserves policy, noting that while the Minority supports the initiative in principle, its execution through GoldBod raises more questions than answers.

“Today, we do not know whether GoldBod makes a distinction between legally mined gold and illicit gold. All we hear are success stories about the tons of gold they have purchased,” he concluded.

The suspects, reportedly Togolese, were arrested by officers from the Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department during an operation on January 23, 2026.

According to a statement by the Police, the arrests followed the interception of a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, traveling towards Tuntumba, an area known for illegal mining. The vehicle was driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Upon questioning, the occupants reportedly admitted they were Togolese and were heading to the area to participate in small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

The police subsequently took all 22 persons into custody for further action.

Authorities say the suspects will be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service to go through the required immigration and legal procedures.

Meanwhile, investigations into the case are continuing as security agencies step up efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and related activities in the Savannah Region.

Galamsey: Lands Ministry vows relentless war after shooting of NAIMOS officer https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-lands-ministry-vows-relentless-war-after-shooting-of-naimos-officer/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 06:59:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621893 The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has affirmed its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, following a violent encounter involving officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in the Bono Region.

During the operation, a NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot wound, while an armed suspect was killed in the exchange.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry said the officer was shot in the thigh during a routine anti-galamsey patrol along the Subinkurom–Kyeremasu road in the Dormaa Central Municipality.

According to the statement, the task force came under fire from armed individuals hiding in the bushes, prompting the officers to return fire.

The injured officer was rushed to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkuro, where he is receiving treatment. One of the attackers, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Acknowledging the risks faced by officers, the Ministry stressed that such violence will not derail the campaign against illegal mining.

“Despite the persistent attacks and disruptions, [NAIMOS] remains committed to fighting the scourge of illegal mining,” the statement said.

The incident has heightened concerns about the growing use of weapons by illegal miners, as enforcement teams increasingly face armed resistance during operations.

NAIMOS has appealed to traditional authorities, local communities, and stakeholders to continue supporting the anti-galamsey campaign, noting that illegal mining continues to destroy water bodies, forests, and farmlands across the country.

The ministry insists its determination to protect Ghana’s natural resources remains unshaken, even as officers face life-threatening risks on the frontline.

NAIMOS shuts down galamsey sites at Duayaw Nkwanta https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-shuts-down-galamsey-sites-at-duayaw-nkwanta/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 06:54:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621300 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a major intelligence-led operation to dismantle illegal mining activities polluting the River Bisi in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

The operation, conducted on Monday, January 19, 2026, between the early morning hours and midday, targeted mining sites linked to severe environmental degradation along the River Bisi, a key tributary of the Tano River.

The pollution has reportedly disrupted farming and other livelihoods in nearby communities, including Egya Wuradu Kuro, Egya Antwi and Nana Etufuwaa Kuro.

During the exercise, the task force overran the illegal mining enclave, destroying makeshift shelters and logistical bases used by the operators.

Several items believed to have been used in the illicit activities were dismantled and destroyed, including heavy-duty water pumping machines, gold-washing platforms, generators and other mining accessories.

Additional equipment and materials were also destroyed at the site, among them welding and pumping machines, fuel-powered engines, radios, water hoses, diesel fuel drums and excavator batteries, as part of efforts to completely disable the operation and prevent a return.

After closing down the sites, NAIMOS officers engaged residents of the affected communities, most of whom are farmers, to gather intelligence and reassure them of continued state intervention.

The discussions also focused on rebuilding trust and underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting farmlands, water bodies and public infrastructure.

The Director of Operations at NAIMOS said similar enforcement actions would be sustained across the Ahafo and Bono regions, stressing that restoring the Tano River and its tributaries is critical to safeguarding agriculture, livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

NAIMOS halts illegal mining activities along Kumasi-Sunyani highway https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-halts-illegal-mining-activities-along-kumasi-sunyani-highway/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 12:23:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621008 Operatives of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) have embarked on a series of raids to clear the reckless illegal mining along the Kumasi – Sunyani Highway.

The raids on Saturday, January 17, commenced at about 0820 hrs, when the NAIMOS task force stormed illegal mining sites at the outskirts of the Ashanti Region before entering the Ahafo Region.

The anti-galamsey operations began from Bronikrom, close to Mankraso, where the task force cleared an illegal mining site just about 30 meters along the road between Bronikrom and Mankraso before reaching Adugyama.

The illegal miners who were actively engaged in the mining fled the scene upon sighting the NAIMOS taskforce and left behind an excavator and other items.

The taskforce subsequently immobilised the excavator by detaching its monitor, other vital parts and batteries. Following the raids, the taskforce proceeded to Kunsu in the Ahafo Ano South West district.

Early investigations revealed that the illegal miners at Kunsu had also absconded to escape arrest. Similarly, the task force flushed out the illegal miners and burned some items at the site.

The task force further immobilised an excavator, which had already been tampered with by the illegal miners; hence, it did not have any monitor or control board attached.

Based on intelligence, the NAIMOS taskforce thereafter proceeded to another illegal mining site at Adeji Mim, a suburb of Duayaw Nkwanta.

The task force arrived at an illegal mining site in this town and confirmed that the Tano River flows along the site. It was further observed that the illegal miners depended heavily on the River for their illegal mining activities, thereby causing severe pollution of the River.

The illegal miners had makeshift structures at the site, which served as hideouts for their activities. The taskforce completely burnt down the makeshift structures and a multipurpose heavy-duty water pumping machine.

Several items were burnt, including water hoses, makeshift structures, 1 Chanfang, 8 tricycles, 14 motors, 2 heavy duty grinder, 2 heavy-duty water pumping machines, and a metallic gold washing platform.

Other items seized included 2 excavator batteries, 1 drum of diesel fuel, 1 excavator monitor, 4 cartridges of pump action gun, a wooden gold washing platform, 5 water jumping machines and a box of assorted tools.

Commenting on the day’s raids, the Director of Operations for NAIMOS highlighted that the Taskforce will continue to operate in the Bono and Ahafo regions to ensure that the heavily polluted Tano River is brought back to its once pristine state.

He reiterated that efforts are being made to permanently position troops at strategic location on the enclave to ensure perpetual surveillance.

She emphasized that despite the risks and challenges involved in combating galamsey, there should be unwavering commitment to promoting a healthy environment and driving sustainable development.

Prof. Browne Klutse, accompanied by the Ashanti and Eastern Regional Directors of EPA, Dr. Jackson Adiyia Nyantakyi and Sydney Danso, paid a courtesy visit to three journalists from the Kumasi unit of the Multimedia Group who were injured during an anti-galamsey operation.

The journalists—Nana Yaw Gyimah, Akwasi Adomako, and Joseph Obeng—were among five media personnel involved in a road accident on November 6, 2025, while covering the EPA’s fight against illegal mining. The victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, forcing them to take several months off work before resuming their duties.

The visit to Luv FM and Nhyira FM aimed to assess the journalists’ current condition and their response to treatment following the accident. They were received by the General Manager of the Kumasi Unit of Multimedia Group, Jimmy Aglah, and the News Editor, Kofi Adu Domfeh.

During the interaction, Prof. Browne Klutse expressed joy at seeing the journalists recovered and assured them that an insurance compensation package was being processed.

“We won’t leave you behind; we are with you, and don’t forsake us too. The insurance package is underway. The documentation has caused delays, but it will come,” she assured.

As a token of support, the EPA presented the journalists with bags of rice, boxes of tomatoes, and a cash donation.

Speaking on behalf of the injured journalists, Nana Yaw Gyimah expressed gratitude to the EPA for the timely visit.

“We are happy and thankful to be alive today. Our healing process was tough, but in all, God has saved us. We do appreciate your visit as it has rekindled our relationship,” he said.

The EPA delegation later visited the other two media personnel at Channel 1TV and Media General who were also involved in the accident, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kofi Adu Domfeh.

31 granted bail over illegal mining in Apramprama forest reserve https://www.adomonline.com/31-granted-bail-over-illegal-mining-in-apramprama-forest-reserve/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 19:11:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618426 The Bekwai Circuit Court has granted bail to 28 Chinese nationals and their three Ghanaian accomplices, accused of attempting to mine illegally in the Apamprama Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.

The 31 individuals were arrested late last year by the Forestry Commission after they set up camp within the forest in preparation for an alleged illegal mining operation. They were remanded in police custody following their first court appearance last week.

The bail application was moved today by counsel for the accused, Dominic Kwadwo Osei, and was opposed by the prosecution, represented by the Attorney General’s Department.

After hearing submissions from both sides, the Court granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of Two Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵200,000.00) each, with two (2) sureties to be justified.

The court ordered that the sureties must be Ghanaians and that their Ghana Cards be deposited at the Court Registry. In addition, the passports of all the accused persons are to be deposited.

The Court further directed the Registrar and the Investigator to ensure full compliance with the bail conditions.

Half of the Apamprama Forest Reserve has already been degraded. Many illegal miners have attempted to operate in the reserve under the pretext of conducting reclamation work.

Mahama’s first year marked by failure to tackle galamsey – CDM https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-first-year-marked-by-failure-to-tackle-galamsey-cdm/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 08:30:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618062 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s administration over what it describes as a worsening illegal mining crisis one year into his presidency, warning that galamsey has reached emergency proportions.

In a statement issued in January 2026 to mark the first year of Mahama’s tenure, CDM said illegal mining remains unresolved and has visibly intensified, causing severe contamination of major water bodies that supply drinking water to millions of Ghanaians.

The group also expressed concern over growing evidence that farm produce is now contaminated with heavy metals, posing serious public health risks and threatening national food security.

According to CDM, both farmers and consumers face long-term dangers if the trend is not urgently addressed.

“The lack of decisive, transparent, and sustained government action against galamsey represents a grave leadership failure,” the statement said, adding that environmental destruction under the current administration undermines claims of responsible governance.

CDM concluded that a government that fails to protect land, water, and food systems cannot credibly claim to safeguard the future of its citizens, urging President Mahama to take bold and immediate action.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, January 8, Dr. Boako described the situation as alarming, saying it threatens both the environment and the livelihoods of residents.

“We are begging you. The people of Tano North are calling for the action of NAIMOS because galamsey is killing us. It is consuming us, and it is a worrying situation,” he said.

He explained that illegal mining has caused extensive damage to farmlands, water sources, and local infrastructure, cautioning that failure to act promptly could derail development efforts in the area.

Dr. Boako urged NAIMOS to intensify enforcement measures, carry out regular monitoring, and collaborate with community leaders to eliminate illegal mining, emphasising that immediate intervention is essential for the safety, health, and prosperity of Tano North residents.

Illegal mining, polluted water key warning signs in Mahama’s first year – Asah Asante https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-mining-polluted-water-key-warning-signs-in-mahamas-first-year-asah-asante/ Wed, 07 Jan 2026 08:58:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2616764 Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, a political scientist and Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, has warned that the government’s handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, could become a major political liability if urgent action is not taken.

Speaking on Joy FM’s AM Show on Tuesday, January 7, as President John Dramani Mahama marked one year in office, Dr Asah Asante described galamsey as one of the “ugly” issues under the current administration, despite acknowledging efforts made to address the problem.

While commending the government for deploying interventions, including military operations and other task forces, he questioned the lack of prosecutions following arrests.

“My surprise is that a lot of people who have been arrested are not put before the court. What are we doing?” he asked.

Dr Asah-Asante expressed concern that water bodies continue to suffer severe pollution, warning that the situation has worsened in recent months. He cited reports from parts of the Central Region, where residents are forced to buy a gallon of water for as much as five cedis due to contaminated sources.

“These are early warning signals to the government,” he said, stressing that the environmental and social costs of galamsey are becoming unbearable for affected communities.

He cautioned that failure to decisively address illegal mining, particularly by ensuring prosecutions and restoring polluted water bodies, could have serious political consequences for the administration. “If they fail to address this, I’m afraid it’s one of the things that can send them home,” Dr Asah Asante warned.

Illegal mining has remained a major national issue, blamed for the destruction of forests, pollution of major rivers, and threats to public health.

Successive governments have launched campaigns to curb the practice, but enforcement and accountability have often been criticised as weak.

Dr Asah-Asante’s comments add to growing calls for stronger action as the Mahama administration enters its second year in office, with environmental protection and water security emerging as key tests of governance.

Declare targeted state of emergency on galamsey – CFA Executive Director https://www.adomonline.com/declare-targeted-state-of-emergency-on-galamsey-cfa-executive-director/ Sun, 04 Jan 2026 12:34:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2615894 The Executive Director of Climate Frontier Advocacy (CFA), Dr John Baptist Naah, has called on the government to declare a targeted state of emergency in areas heavily affected by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

He said although the Mahama-led administration has taken steps to address illegal mining, the current measures are not strong enough to deal with what he described as “high-tech galamsey,” where heavy machinery is used to destroy forests, rivers and farmlands at a rapid pace.

Dr Naah made the call in a statement, warning that Ghana’s natural resources are being destroyed faster than government interventions can stop them.

“The primary forest cover in Ghana has been shrinking ferociously,” he said. “It was 8.8 million hectares in 1900. It reduced to 4.2 million hectares in 1950 and further reduced to 1.5 million hectares in 1999.”

He questioned how much forest cover is left today, given the scale of destruction caused by illegal mining.

“Can you imagine how much primary forest cover is now left in the midst of this ferocious high-tech galamsey menace? Your guess is as good as mine,” he stated.

Dr Naah also raised concerns about the impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s rivers, many of which he said have lost their natural state.

“The once sacred, clean and life-giving rivers have sadly turned into brown and poisoned rivers as a result of the relentless practice of high-tech galamsey,” he said.

According to him, the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining poses serious risks to the country’s future, including food insecurity, water shortages and increased climate shocks.

“The potential of causing food insecurity, water scarcity and more climate shocks now and in the future for Ghanaians is real,” he warned.

“Our farmlands, natural habitats for wildlife including flora, are also not spared, and we are showing no agency in this matter.”

Dr Naah questioned the level of leadership and accountability in the fight against illegal mining and directly addressed the President in his statement.

“Mr President, CFA’s score for your efforts in the high-tech galamsey fight is not good enough, as a better score is expected of you by Ghanaians,” he said.

He also expressed concern that the creation of the Office of the Minister of State for Climate and Sustainability could become meaningless if illegal mining is not tackled decisively.

“It is also our view that the creation of the office of the Minister of State for Climate and Sustainability may be an exercise in futility if this high-tech galamsey fight is not won,” he added.

As part of urgent measures, Dr Naah called for immediate and decisive action by the government.

“This agent is the immediate declaration of a targeted state of emergency on high-tech galamsey hotspots to halt the ongoing destruction,” he said.

He further recommended a temporary suspension of all illegal mining activities.

“We are also recommending that there should be a temporary ban or suspension on all illegal operations, including small-scale mining now, or a freeze on unauthorised mining concessions,” he stated.

Gov’t urged to intensify galamsey fight as it threatens herbal medicine industry https://www.adomonline.com/govt-urged-to-intensify-galamsey-fight-as-it-threatens-herbal-medicine-industry/ Sat, 03 Jan 2026 11:03:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2615689 A Member of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations (GHATFRAM) and Chief Executive Officer of Amega Herbal, Dr. Asiedu Amega, has raised concern over the growing threat illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—poses to Ghana’s herbal medicine industry.

Speaking to workers at a New Year party in Accra, Dr. Amega warned that the survival of the country’s herbal medicine sector is under serious threat if galamsey activities are not urgently addressed.

He explained that illegal mining has led to the destruction of critical water bodies, degradation of fertile lands, and contamination of food crops and medicinal plants with toxic chemicals.

According to him, the production of herbal medicine depends largely on the availability of clean water and uncontaminated medicinal plants, both of which are increasingly becoming scarce due to galamsey.

Dr. Amega therefore called on government to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the natural resources that sustain the herbal medicine industry.

He also appealed to the government to consider the inclusion of traditional medicines in the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) list of approved drugs to enhance accessibility and support the sector.

Cautioning the public against fake products on the market, Dr. Asiedu warned that there is only one authentic Amega Herbal product currently available, stressing that any other product bearing the same name should be treated as counterfeit.

Galamsey: Failure to resolve menace could send gov’t to opposition – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-failure-to-resolve-menace-could-send-govt-to-opposition-dr-asah-asante/ Thu, 01 Jan 2026 17:56:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2615246 Political Scientist, Dr Asah-Asante, has warned that the government’s inability to effectively deal with illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, could seriously undermine its political fortunes.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Dr Asah-Asante said the fight against galamsey remains a critical test for the government, stressing that failure to resolve the menace could push the administration into opposition.

“We also want to see the fight against galamsey. Government cannot renege on its promise to fight galamsey head-on because I can tell you without fear of contradiction that if the government doesn’t fix that problem, it is one of the things that can send the government to opposition,” he stated.

Dr Asah-Asante cited the worsening water situation in parts of the Central Region, particularly Winneba and surrounding communities, as evidence of the growing impact of illegal mining activities.

“I can assure them because if you look at the Central Region now, Winneba and its environs, people are buying a gallon of water for five cedis, and the rest of them. This is not good news because water is life and people need it at all times,” he said.

According to him, the initial determination shown by the government in addressing galamsey appears to be fading, raising concerns among the public.

“The zeal and the passion with which the government started to deal with it appear to me that it is dying down because if you listen to the news in recent times, they are talking about the fact that the government has failed to prosecute people who have crossed the line relative to galamsey,” Dr Asah-Asante noted.

He therefore called on the government to intensify its efforts and take decisive action against offenders.

“If that is anything to go by, then I expect the government to step up its game,” he added.

Dr Asah-Asante further warned that illegal mining continues to threaten public health and the country’s food security through water pollution and contamination.

“Look at the turbidity levels of water and the contamination that we have in terms of the food we consume and export. I believe that the government must sit up and begin to work and work well,” he stressed.

Galamsey: NAIMOS to sustain nationwide operations through Christmas – Paa Kwesi Schandorf https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-naimos-to-sustain-nationwide-operations-through-christmas-paa-kwesi-schandorf/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 19:23:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2613565 The Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has assured Ghanaians that the National Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (NAIMOS) will continue its operations nationwide throughout the Christmas season.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Mr Schandorf said, “NAIMOS is still continuing with its operations across the length and breadth of the country.”

He noted that while many people would be taking a break during the festive period, NAIMOS personnel would remain on duty. “While many will be taking a break this Christmas, unfortunately, personnel at NAIMOS will not embark on any such venture,” he stated. “They will still be in the communities, ensuring that the menace of illegal mining is strongly dealt with.”

Mr Schandorf also disclosed plans for the permanent deployment of military personnel to illegal mining hotspots across the country. “There is good news that we will soon announce in full detail, and that is the permanent deployment of military personnel to all the relevant flashpoints,” he said.

He explained that the move had already been communicated but required adequate resourcing. “Indeed, we have communicated earlier that that was going to be done. But of course, if you are deploying soldiers in such quantum and momentum, you would need to incentivise and resource them financially. Thankfully, we have that clearance from the Finance Ministry,” he added.

According to him, the deployment is expected to begin early next year. “Hopefully, from the early start of next year, you will see military personnel at all the relevant flashpoints,” he said.

Mr Schandorf emphasised the impact of the planned intervention, noting that it would significantly strengthen surveillance. “That would of course mean that now it is 24-hour surveillance at all of the relevant areas where illegal mining is concerned. And so images like this very soon are going to be a thing of the past because now the military personnel will be permanently stationed, and that will give us enhanced results.”

The announcement underscores the government’s resolve to intensify the fight against illegal mining and protect the environment, even during the festive season.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 18, the groups described the repeal as a major victory for environmental protection, noting that the regulation had exposed Ghana’s forest reserves and biodiversity-rich areas to serious mining threats.

The coalition praised the Acting Minister for Environment and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for spearheading efforts to annul the regulation. They also acknowledged the role played by the media and concerned Ghanaians who supported the campaign for its repeal.

According to the groups, the decision represents one of the most significant environmental legislative reversals in recent years. They further urged the government to intensify forest protection measures, clamp down on illegal mining and logging, and invest in the restoration of degraded forest landscapes.

Speaking to Adom News, the Ashanti South Regional General Manager, Ing. Jonathan Adjabeng, said massive system losses—largely driven by illegal connections in mining communities—are severely affecting the company’s revenue mobilisation efforts and creating significant operational challenges.

He described the situation as one of ECG’s major setbacks this year, noting that it continues to undermine operational efficiency in the region.

Ing. Adjabeng further revealed that taskforces under the Revenue Protection Unit are often attacked during enforcement and mobilisation exercises in these areas.

Despite the challenges, he assured that the company will intensify enforcement operations and impose surcharges on culprits to curb the menace.

Kwesi Botchway Jnr requests update from A-G on EOCO galamsey investigations https://www.adomonline.com/kwesi-botchway-jnr-requests-update-from-a-g-on-eoco-galamsey-investigations/ Wed, 17 Dec 2025 16:19:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2611476 Private legal practitioner Kwesi Botchway Jnr, Esq., has formally petitioned the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for an update on investigations into alleged illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey, which were previously referred to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In a letter dated Wednesday, December 17, 2025, addressed to the Attorney-General, Mr. Botchway “respectfully” requested clarification on the status of the investigations, citing strong public interest and the severe national impact of illegal mining.

The request follows a directive issued by the Attorney-General on July 15, 2025, instructing EOCO to commence investigations into suspected illegal mining activities in several mining districts across the country. The directive specifically ordered EOCO to “invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation, namely; Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin,” alongside matters arising from the Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng Report.

Referring to EOCO’s statutory mandate, Mr. Botchway noted that the directive was issued under the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804), forming part of the government’s broader commitment to tackling illegal mining.

In his letter, the lawyer requested clarification on three key matters: the current progress of the investigations, any interim findings EOCO has submitted to the Attorney-General’s Office, and the expected timelines for completion.

He grounded his request in the Attorney-General’s public justification for the investigations, quoting from the July directive that the action was “borne out of growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence, regarding the involvement of some citizens in unauthorized mining operations (generally called galamsey) that are in blatant contravention of the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995.”

Mr. Botchway emphasized that illegal mining “not only flouts our mining regulations but also gravely endangers our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” highlighting the environmental and socio-economic consequences of galamsey.

The petitioner stated that the request is made “in good faith and in the interest of transparency, public accountability, and strengthening public confidence in the national fight against illegal mining.”

He appealed for an official response “at your earliest convenience” and expressed gratitude to the Attorney-General for his “continued service to the Republic.”

Asaman Tamfoe DCE not involved in galamsey – Chief Kwame Koh responds https://www.adomonline.com/asaman-tamfoe-dce-not-involved-in-galamsey-chief-kwame-koh-responds/ Wed, 17 Dec 2025 09:45:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2611254 The Chief of Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region, Osabarima Kwame Koh, has dismissed allegations linking the District Chief Executive (DCE), Ernest Owusu Ntim, to illegal mining activities.

His comments follow a ruling by the Koforidua High Court 2, which fined the Atiwa East DCE GH¢12,000 for contempt of court in an ongoing case related to illegal mining on protected land.

Speaking to the media, Osabarima Kwame Koh described claims that the DCE is involved in galamsey as false and misleading. He said the allegations were made by a known illegal mining kingpin from Ankaase and should be seen as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the DCE’s image and undermine his efforts to combat galamsey in the district.

The Chief further alleged that the accuser, identified as Daniel Ansah, also known as Abeiku, has forcefully taken over approximately 7,000 acres of land belonging to the Asaman Tamfoe traditional area and local farmers.

According to Osabarima Kwame Koh, the alleged illegal miner has hired land guards who have reportedly assaulted youths and farmers, creating fear and insecurity in the community.

He has therefore appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intervene, protect residents, and restore peace in the area.

Atiwa East: I swear on my life, the DCE is into galamsey – Accuser https://www.adomonline.com/atiwa-east-i-swear-on-my-life-the-dce-is-into-galamsey-accuser/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 12:19:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610833 A member of the Ankaase Badwam Town Crier Committee in Atiwa East, Daniel Ansah, has alleged that the District Chief Executive (DCE), Ernest Ntim, is involved in illegal mining activities.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr Ansah, who filed the court case against the DCE, claimed that Mr Ntim has financially benefited from galamsey operations since assuming office.

“I swear on my life that the DCE is into galamsey. In just eight months as DCE, he has built a two-storey building and bought about 30 cars. Where did he get all the money? I should die if I am lying,” he alleged.

Mr Ansah further accused the DCE of using his position to control illegal mining activities in the area.

However, Atiwa East DCE Ernest Ntim has denied the allegations, describing them as false and malicious.

He maintained that the contempt case brought against him in an ongoing galamsey-related court matter was orchestrated to tarnish his image.

Mr Ntim reiterated that he remains committed to fighting illegal mining and believes the accusations are a backlash against his efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities in the district.

Contempt case against me is a setup – Atiwa East DCE https://www.adomonline.com/contempt-case-against-me-is-a-setup-atiwa-east-dce/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 12:16:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610832 The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atiwa East in the Eastern Region, Ernest Ntim, has described the contempt case brought against him in an ongoing illegal mining matter as “orchestrated,” insisting he has no involvement in galamsey.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr Ntim said he has been at the forefront of the fight against illegal mining since assuming office and believes some individuals are targeting him because of his anti-galamsey stance.

He explained that the land at the centre of the dispute had been in court even before his appointment as DCE, rejecting claims that he owns the land or engages in illegal mining activities.

“If you come to Atiwa, we have a significant issue with illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. Since I took office, I have been actively working to end this practice. I have officially petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding this matter. The land they are claiming is mine has been the subject of a court case even before I became District Chief Executive. Someone is trying to tarnish my reputation. It is absolutely untrue that I am involved in galamsey,” he stated.

Mr Ntim revealed that the Koforidua High Court 2 fined him GH¢12,000 for contempt of court in a case filed in May 2025 by a miner involved in a land dispute with him.

The applicant had alleged that the DCE entered the disputed land despite a court order restraining both parties. According to Mr Ntim, the allegations were intended to tarnish his image.

He reiterated his commitment to ending illegal mining in the district through stricter supervision and collaboration with assembly members.

“The court case concerns land they allege belongs to me, and I believe it has been orchestrated against me. This individual even told me he would take action against me when I assumed the role of DCE. I am committed to fighting against galamsey, and I have tasked the Assembly members to identify and document all lands engaged in such activities. I believe the mining sector lacks proper supervision. People are plotting against me because of my efforts to combat galamsey. I was fined 12,000, but I remain dedicated to this fight,” he said.

Atiwa East DCE appeals court’s ‘unjust’ verdict https://www.adomonline.com/atiwa-east-dce-appeals-courts-unjust-verdict/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 06:37:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610704 The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atiwa East, Ernest Ntim, has denounced the ruling as an injustice and vowed to clear his name.

The DCE has also revealed that an appeal has been filed by his legal representatives.

The Koforidua High Court 2 on Monday fined Mr Ntim GH₵12,000 for disobeying a court injunction that barred all parties from a parcel of land at the center of an illegal mining and land dispute.

The court found that he entered the restricted site, willfully violating its order.

Speaking to JoyNews, the DCE indicated that “the judge asked me to pay a fine.”

“And I’ll pay the fine,” Ntim stated.

He, however, added that, “I’ve not been jailed. I’m here. I’m in the office.”

On the substantive issue, the DCE explained that “you think that if a District Chief Executive, if I want to mine, I will need the office, take the excavator myself, can go to the land, and I will be sitting there using the excavator mining.”

For him, such a notion does not make sense as far as his principles are concerned, which is why he describes it as injustice.

“It is an injustice against me, and I will fight it,” Ntim declared, referring to the contempt verdict.

“I want to state it on record that I’ve never engaged in illegal mining.”

The DCE confirmed that his team is fighting back through the judicial system.

“We have filed an appeal,” he told JoyNews.

Background

The injunction application sought to restrain the DCE and other persons from entering the land, which is the subject of a substantive suit pending before the court. It further barred them from grading or removing soil, digging pits or ditches, engaging in any form of mining activity, or dealing with the land in any manner whatsoever.

Despite the matter being sub judice, the applicant alleges that the DCE, his brothers, and another person, described in the application as illegal miners within the Atiwa East District—re-entered the land and continued galamsey operations.

Court documents state that on May 2, 2025, one of the DCE’s brothers, was confronted at the site and reportedly claimed that “his brother (now DCE) had been nominated for the position of DCE for Atiwa East, and on his confirmation, no one, not even the courts could interfere with their activities, and further that even judges will become the subordinates of the DCE.”

The affidavit in support of the application argues that the conduct of the DCE and the other respondents was willful and deliberate, constituting contempt of court and an interference with the administration of justice intended to undermine the authority of the court.

According to the applicant, a complaint was lodged with the Eastern South Regional Police Command at Kyebi on May 2, 2025, while the matter was still pending before the court. The police subsequently effected arrests at the galamsey site.

The application further alleges that after the arrests, the DCE confronted the applicant, stating that those arrested were his workers and warning that if the complaint was not withdrawn and he was later confirmed as DCE, he would change the ownership of the land and claim it as his own.

The applicant also alleges that the DCE confirmed his brother’s assertion that “even the judges would become his subordinates” upon his confirmation, and advised the applicant to allow him to mine quietly.

After several adjournments, the court delivered its ruling on Monday, December 15, finding the DCE in contempt and imposing a fine of GH₵12,000.

The substantive land and mining case remains pending before the court, with hearings expected to continue.

The contempt application was filed in May 2025 by a miner who is in a dispute with the DCE over a parcel of land where mining activities were taking place.

Galamsey, betting fuel rising school dropouts in Northern Ghana – Eduwatch https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-betting-fuel-rising-school-dropouts-in-northern-ghana-eduwatch/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 05:59:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610307 Education policy think tank Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has expressed concern over a growing education crisis in northern Ghana, disclosing that nearly 70 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 who are out of school have dropped out largely due to illegal mining and betting activities.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, December 14, the Executive Director of Eduwatch, Kofi Asare, said recent findings point to a worrying shift in the profile of out-of-school children compared with trends captured in the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

Mr Asare explained that while earlier data showed that most out-of-school children were in the lower age brackets, the latest evidence suggests that children in the northern regions are increasingly leaving school as they grow older.

He attributed this trend mainly to the attraction of galamsey and betting, rather than challenges related to initial school enrolment.

“About 70 per cent of the out-of-school population are aged between 12 and 17. This contrasts sharply with the 2021 census, where the majority were much younger. What we are now seeing in northern Ghana is that the older children become, the more likely they are to drop out of school,” he noted.

He added that qualitative data from the field confirms the trend, with galamsey—particularly in areas such as Talensi—and betting emerging as major factors driving school dropouts, especially among boys within the 12 to 17 age group.

The remarks follow an extensive Out-of-School Children Census conducted by Eduwatch across 20 districts in northern Ghana to generate community-based data to inform education policy and interventions.

The survey found that males accounted for the majority of out-of-school children, with higher concentrations recorded in districts including Chereponi, Nanumba South, Tatale Sanguli and Bawku West.

Latvian millionaire who lost €17m and rebuilt his fortune begs Ghana to choose farming over galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/latvian-millionaire-who-lost-17m-and-rebuilt-his-fortune-begs-ghana-to-choose-farming-over-galamsey/ Sat, 13 Dec 2025 07:54:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609984 A man who once owned a Rolls-Royce Phantom, lost everything in the 2008 financial crash, nearly died from a heart attack, and rebuilt a multi-million-dollar business from a single garage in Accra has issued a passionate plea to Ghana: abandon illegal mining (galamsey) and bet everything on agriculture.

Aldis Ozols, the 55-year-old Founder and CEO of A1 Diesel Limited and author of the newly launched memoir Win Life, Lose Millions, made the emotional appeal on JoyNews’ Personality Profile with Lexis Bill on Thursday night.

Having personally tried his hand at small-scale gold mining in Ghana – and lost half a million dollars in the process – Ozols spoke with the authority of someone who has seen the industry from the inside.

“I think Ghana can stop [galamsey],” Ozols said when asked by the host to share his views on galamsey.

He added, “Ghana can do well with farming. The farming is the super future for Ghana.”

Pointing to the country’s extraordinary natural fertility, the Latvian-born entrepreneur continued, “When you eat pawpaw, you just throw the seeds. You see what happened? They grow immediately. Whatever you plant, the land is so fertile. You don’t need to add any fertiliser. Ghana is so rich. Ghana is so blessed.”

In contrast, he painted a grim picture of the environmental catastrophe caused by illegal mining. “The forests are being destroyed on this continent – thousands of acres, water bodies – everything,” he said. “You can see in Tarkwa that mosquitoes are less than in Accra. Why? Because of poisons in every water.”

Ozols’ journey to this point has been anything but ordinary.

Born in Soviet-occupied Latvia, he grew up in an era when private business was considered a serious crime.

After serving in the Special Forces, he built a €17 million real estate empire across Europe – complete with luxury cars and private jets – only to watch it collapse overnight in the 2008 global crash, leaving him €7 million in debt.

A decade later, a massive heart attack and deep depression brought him to the brink. In 2010, with almost nothing left, he arrived in Ghana. His first venture? Gold mining.

“I invested everything in small-scale mining. Floods came, excavators were destroyed, and after all that pain I got only 2.5 kilos of gold. It was a disaster,” he recalled.

Disillusioned by the destruction he witnessed, Ozols walked away from mining and started A1 Diesel in an unlicensed backyard workshop in 2013. Today the company is one of West Africa’s leading diesel injection and turbocharger specialists, employing dozens of Ghanaians and exporting services continent-wide.

Now a proud resident, Ozols believes the same soil that grows a pawpaw tree from a carelessly tossed seed can feed the nation and the world – if only Ghanaians turn away from the quick riches of galamsey.

His book, Win Life, Lose Millions – launched this week in Accra – is already being described as a raw handbook on resilience. In it, and in Thursday’s interview, Ozols repeated one line that has resonated widely:

“Pain is the best teacher. I lost €17 million, almost lost my life, but I won life.”

He believes Ghana can do the same by losing the galamsey money today and winning life tomorrow.

Galamsey Fight: Ambassador calls for more comprehensive media reporting https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-fight-ambassador-calls-for-more-comprehensive-media-reporting/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 08:32:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609748 The Chinese Embassy in Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at a training workshop on “Green Mining: Best Practices for Responsible Reporting” organised by the Ghana News Agency at Peduase on Thursday, December 11, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, called for a more determined national approach to tackling the menace.

He emphasised that both government and citizens must treat the galamsey issue with the seriousness it deserves. The three-day dialogue is designed to equip journalists with a better understanding of the complexities of the Ghana-China partnership in the mining sector.

However, the Ambassador lamented that media coverage often disproportionately focuses on isolated incidents involving a few individuals.

“For us, we support the Ghanaian government to tackle this problem. As I have reiterated many times in this country, Ghanaians must take the galamsey issue seriously. If you do not take it seriously, there is no simple way out. We want to reiterate that the Chinese should do things legally,” he said.

“Sometimes, I feel it is a little unfair. I admit that a tiny number of Chinese are involved in illegal mining in this country. But those isolated incidents often dominate news coverage. On the other hand, hundreds of Chinese companies are doing business here responsibly in all sectors, contributing significantly to social and economic development and creating jobs for local people.”

The Ambassador was categorical in affirming China’s official stance on citizens involved in illegal activities abroad, confirming that Beijing supports Accra’s efforts to address the deep-rooted galamsey problem.

“The Chinese government consistently requires Chinese nationals overseas to abide by the laws and regulations of their host countries, resolutely opposes any illegal activities of Chinese citizens abroad, and supports the Ghanaian government in its efforts to tackle galamsey, which has a long history and is very complicated,” he said.

He further highlighted the role of legitimate Chinese enterprises engaged in sustainable mining and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, which often go unreported.

“Several large companies are conducting sustainable mining and social projects in local communities, but they do not receive media coverage. I appeal to our media friends to report comprehensively and objectively about China, to highlight positive stories, and to give the Ghanaian public the full picture. This will help nurture the good friendship between our two countries,” he added.

The Ambassador’s appeal comes amid heightened tension surrounding galamsey, which has severely degraded Ghana’s water bodies and large areas of cocoa and farmland. Despite these challenges, Ghana’s economic partnership with China remains central to the country’s development agenda.

NAIMOS ramps up Eastern Region clampdown, shuts major galamsey sites on Akyem Oda stretch https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-ramps-up-eastern-region-clampdown-shuts-major-galamsey-sites-on-akyem-oda-stretch/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 06:50:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608405 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has reinforced its relentless offensive against illegal mining, completing another high-impact operation across the Eastern Region on Sunday, 8 December 2025.

The latest sweep, which spanned more than 12 hours, underscored government’s growing determination to halt the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies.

From dawn until late evening, NAIMOS operatives conducted coordinated patrols in the Atiwa West District and the Birim Central Municipality—two areas increasingly plagued by persistent galamsey activity.

During the mission, the task force discovered several active illegal mining sites and moved swiftly to neutralise the machinery driving the devastation.

A major breakthrough occurred along the Akyem Akropong corridor, where officials uncovered an extensive roadside mining enclave hosting four excavators and five washing plants.

Two of the excavators were found fully operational, prompting officers to remove their monitors and control units on the spot to render them unusable. The remaining two machines had already been partially stripped by illegal miners attempting to evade detection.

At approximately 16:10 hours, a second discovery was made in Akyem Oda within Birim Central. There, the task force disabled another excavator stationed directly beside the main road.

In total, three excavators were fully immobilised across both locations. The machines were left on-site, as the operation could not secure low-bed transport for evacuation.

Environmental assessments conducted during the raid painted a grim picture. Vast portions of land—estimated at more than four acres—had been scarred by deep, contaminated pits.

Some of the water-filled craters stretched as wide as 200 metres and sank about eight feet deep, posing immediate dangers to nearby streams, farmlands and residents.

NAIMOS intelligence suggests that illegal miners continue to adapt their tactics, often withdrawing briefly during enforcement activities and repositioning equipment only a short distance away.

This pattern, according to officials, reinforces the need for sustained pressure rather than isolated raids.

Nonetheless, NAIMOS reports that its stepped-up visibility and rapid mobilisation strategy are rattling galamsey operators across the region.

Many miners are said to be abandoning sites mid-operation, interrupting supply chains and weakening the networks that facilitate illegal gold production.

The Secretariat maintains that its work is far from complete. With critical rivers such as the Birim and Ayensu still heavily threatened, NAIMOS says prolonged field deployment remains essential.

It has reiterated that illegal mining is not only an attack on the environment but a severe public health hazard, contaminating food and water sources with dangerous chemicals.

Save our farmlands – Sankore Chief calls for united front against illegal mining https://www.adomonline.com/save-our-farmlands-sankore-chief-calls-for-united-front-against-illegal-mining/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 14:16:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608254 The Paramount Chief of Sankore in the Ahafo Region, Nana Ogyedom Appiah Kubi Pabo Katakye (IV), has called on fellow chiefs and security agencies to join the government in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) to protect farmlands.

Speaking at Sankore during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in the Ahafo Region, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure The Future,” he expressed concern over the alarming rate at which illegal miners are destroying farmlands. He urged chiefs, as custodians of the land, alongside security services, to actively support government initiatives led by President John Dramani Mahama.

“The measures initiated by this government are on track in combating illegal mining, but their effectiveness will increase significantly if chiefs and security services actively participate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, encouraged residents to support government policies aimed at strengthening agriculture. She emphasized the importance of consuming locally grown produce to boost the economy, improve health, and create jobs.

Powerful chiefs and politicians obstructing anti-galamsey operations – NAIMOS https://www.adomonline.com/powerful-chiefs-and-politicians-obstructing-anti-galamsey-operations-naimos/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 11:46:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608161 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has raised serious concerns about persistent interference from powerful individuals, particularly chiefs and politicians, which it says continues to hinder Ghana’s fight against illegal mining.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Sekondi on Sunday, December 7, the Deputy Director of Operations at NAIMOS, Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Satekla, said the secretariat remains committed to tackling galamsey, but influential actors are posing one of its biggest operational challenges.

Addressing 14 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Western Region, along with two Regional Police Commanders, Lt. Col. Satekla stressed that illegal mining hotspots require strict enforcement measures and full cooperation from local authorities to maintain effective “no-go” zones.

He noted that although local support is vital to the success of anti-galamsey operations, it is frequently compromised.

“Every institution has challenges, and we are no exception. One of our key challenges is interference from influential people. We encounter this from politicians, chiefs, and other stakeholders in areas where we operate, and it is a big problem that must be addressed. Another critical challenge is logistics,” he said.

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending illegal mining and urged all MMDCEs to support President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed and intensified efforts to eradicate galamsey.

We lack development, our lands are being wrecked – Kwabeng community blames chief https://www.adomonline.com/we-lack-development-our-lands-are-being-wrecked-kwabeng-community-blames-chief/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 10:46:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608071 Tensions are rising in Kwabeng, the capital of Atiwa District in Ghana’s Eastern Region, as angry youth protest against widespread illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

The protesters are accusing their chief of failing to act while the community suffers severe environmental damage.

Addo Dankwa Jnr., a youth leader, told Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem that residents are “not at peace and are not happy,” emphasizing that repeated petitions to the palace regarding land destruction have gone unanswered.

“We lack development, and the galamsey activities are excessive. Soon, we may have nowhere to bury our loved ones because all our lands are being destroyed,” he lamented.

He warned that the situation is fueling frustration and lawlessness in the community, which could escalate into conflict if urgent action is not taken.

According to Dankwa, the youth are calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intervene, halt an upcoming gathering planned by the chief, and ensure that justice is served.

The protest comes amid national concerns over the impact of galamsey on water bodies, farmlands, and community safety.

“The people have repeatedly petitioned the palace for change, but the kingsmen are still not listening. The current situation is troubling, and the chief is not addressing these issues. We urge the IGP to step in, stop the chief from holding gatherings, and ensure our concerns are addressed,” he added.

Prof Lumumba blames governance failures for galamsey crisis https://www.adomonline.com/prof-lumumba-blames-governance-failures-for-galamsey-crisis/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 08:30:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608047 Pan-Africanist, legal practitioner and governance expert, Prof Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, has attributed the persistence of illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, to failures in governance.

He cautioned that delays in addressing the issue are intensifying both environmental and human costs.

Speaking at a virtual environmental conference organised by the Institute of Governance Ethics and Religion (IGER-AFRICA) on Friday, December 5, Prof Lumumba highlighted the extensive damage galamsey is causing to water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods, emphasising the need for urgent, emergency-level interventions.

The conference, held under the theme, “Navigating the Challenges of Illegal Mining in Ghana: Impact on Individuals, Communities, Health and Policy,” explored the societal and ecological consequences of unregulated mining practices.

Prof Lumumba noted that the lure of quick money has driven many away from productive employment and into illegal mining, with serious long-term repercussions for society.

He warned that unrestrained exploitation is degrading soil quality and the food chain, ultimately leaving everyone worse off.

“The time is now for us to do the right thing,” he said, stressing that delays only exacerbate the crisis.

He further urged governments to move beyond rhetoric, insisting that “results, not intentions, must be used to judge policies and laws.” He added that governments elected on promises to combat illegal mining must be held accountable for delivering measurable outcomes.

“This problem needs to be treated as an emergency,” he noted, asserting that effective implementation, rather than policy pronouncements, constitutes the true test of leadership.

Prof Lumumba also framed the discussion within the broader African mining sector, arguing that foreign dominance has left many countries without control over their natural resources.

“If you come to Ghana, the top mining companies are not Ghanaians. The same is true in the DRC, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Nigeria,” he said, emphasising the limited local influence over mining agendas.

He questioned why illegal mining continues to thrive despite ostensibly robust legal frameworks and policy commitments, pointing out that environmental destruction linked to galamsey persists in Ghana despite laws designed to regulate the sector.

“The question we must ask is: what is the problem?” he said.

IGER-AFRICA, the organisers of the conference, promote ethical leadership, good governance, and interfaith dialogue to advance peace, social justice, and sustainable development across Africa

Galamsey is killing our cocoa, our water, our future – Minority warns of food security meltdown https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-is-killing-our-cocoa-our-water-our-future-minority-warns-of-food-security-meltdown/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 09:26:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607376 The Minority in Parliament has raised alarm over the devastating impact of illegal mining on cocoa farms, water bodies, and Ghana’s long-term food security.

In a Farmers’ Day statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the caucus warned that the country is “running out of time” to protect the sectors that feed millions.

According to the statement, the day is not only meant for celebration but also for deep reflection.

“On the occasion of National Farmers’ Day, the Minority in Parliament extends heartfelt appreciation and resolute solidarity to the gallant farmers, fisherfolk, processors, and agricultural workers whose sweat and resilience continue to feed our nation — even as they face some of the gravest challenges in Ghana’s modern agricultural history.”

The Minority said farmers have been pushed into hardship by market failures and unmet government commitments, citing a “catastrophic grain market collapse” in which more than 1 million metric tonnes of paddy rice valued at GH¢5 billion reportedly remain unsold.

It said the government failed to fulfil its promise that the National Food Buffer Stock Company would purchase all locally produced maize and rice, leaving farmers stranded and threatening national food security.

The caucus also highlighted the struggles of fisherfolk, who it said are grappling with depleted stocks, illegal fishing, and severe logistical challenges due to the chronic shortage of premix fuel. Coastal communities such as Keta, it said, have seen livelihoods collapse as boats remain docked and families go hungry.

The statement noted rising frustration in the agricultural sector, pointing to farmer boycotts of national celebrations and protests demanding answers from government.

It accused the government of allowing markets to be distorted by “cheap, expired, and smuggled rice — often repackaged by politically connected importers,” which it said have made Ghanaian farmers uncompetitive.

The Minority warned that the worst destruction is unfolding in the cocoa sector. It referenced COCOBOD data indicating that 30,000 hectares of cocoa farms have been lost to illegal mining, leaving communities with degraded lands, polluted water, and collapsed livelihoods. Some farmers, it noted, have abandoned cocoa altogether to survive.

The caucus said the destruction of water bodies poses an existential threat to agriculture and fishing, citing turbidity levels in the Ayensu River rising “over 30,000 NTU,” far beyond what treatment plants can manage.

It also lamented the soaring cost of production, unreliable input supply, and the country’s continued dependence on food imports worth between $3.5 and $4.5 billion annually — a trend it described as unsustainable.

The Minority called for urgent investments in modern agriculture and blue economy solutions, including “AI-driven yield and catch forecasting,” precision farming, smart irrigation, and sustainable aquaculture systems.

Its demands include the immediate purchase of unsold grain stocks, restoration of premix fuel supply, strict enforcement against smuggled imports, and decisive national action against illegal mining and illegal fishing. It also urged adequate funding for the Feed Ghana Programme and support for advanced farming and fishing tools.

The statement concluded with a tribute to the country’s farmers and fishers.

“To the millions of Ghanaian farmers across our fields and the fishers upon our waters: We honour you. We celebrate you. We see your struggles. We stand with you,” it said.

The Minority warned that a country that allows illegal mining to destroy cocoa lands and water bodies risks its future and cannot secure food for its people. It wished all farmers a happy Farmers’ Day and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding their welfare.

Forestry Commission arrests 11 Chinese, 10 Ghanaians in Yakombo Forest over galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/forestry-commission-arrests-11-chinese-10-ghanaians-in-yakombo-forest-over-galamsey/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 12:32:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607189 The Forestry Commission has apprehended eleven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians in a coordinated, intelligence-driven raid on illegal mining activities within the Yakombo Forest Reserve in the Buipe Forest District of the Savannah Region.

The operation took place on Tuesday, December 2 by a 51-member team made up of forest guards from the Buipe and Bole Forest District offices of the Forest Services Division, supported by three Rapid Response units, to dismantle the illicit mining activities in the protected reserve.

The suspects were apprehended in Compartments 50 and 51 of the reserve, near Tuntumba in the Bole-Bamboi District.

The Yakombo Forest Reserve—created in 1974 and spanning roughly 1,210 square kilometres—remains Ghana’s largest forest reserve, making the recent intrusion a major threat to its ecological integrity.

The Chinese nationals arrested are: Tang Shao Qi (28), He Peng (40), Zhou Qin Sar (25), Wu Xu (39), He Chuang Ye (45), Cheng Lin (40), Long Xi (32), Yang Gesheng (51), Zhang Hongzhaojie (34), Zhou Peng (39), and Wu Yujie (24).

The Ghanaians are Alhassan Yakubu, Daniel Mba (33), Pious Kwabena (20), Emmanuel Amankra (40), Seidu Suleman (44), Sampson Akawuni (22), Thadeus Gideon (27), Mohammed Salim (21), Mohammed Kanamu (25), and Saaka Yakubu (22).

The operation also led to the seizure of vehicles and equipment, including one Toyota Hilux, two Great Wall pick-up trucks, three Howo tipper trucks, and one Man Diesel low-bed truck carrying an excavator.

All the suspects have since been transferred to the Damongo Regional Police Command to assist with investigations and face possible prosecution. The equipment confiscated during the operation has been moved to the Mole National Park, under the care of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Prof. Gyampo explained that while the pact included several commitments, he is unsure if an emergency declaration was explicitly stated and would need to review the document.

He noted that he personally supported a state of emergency during earlier discussions, arguing that it could strengthen the fight against illegal mining. However, he acknowledged that final decisions rest with the President, who is currently consulting on the matter.

Prof. Gyampo commended the measures introduced by President Mahama’s administration to address illegal mining, describing them as “good steps toward a lasting solution.”

“Galamsey hasn’t ended, but we can all see the efforts being made. Let’s give the government some time to fix it. Galamsey must be fought,” he said.

UEW Chancellor calls for stronger action against galamsey on River Ayensu https://www.adomonline.com/uew-chancellor-calls-for-stronger-action-against-galamsey-on-river-ayensu/ Mon, 01 Dec 2025 10:43:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605715 The Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Neenyi Ghartey VII, has renewed calls for intensified action against illegal miners, whose activities have severely polluted the River Ayensu, the main water source for the Agona Kwanyarko treatment plant.

The contamination has caused widespread water shortages across parts of the Central Region. Neenyi Ghartey VII made the remarks during UEW’s 30th Graduation Ceremony, which saw a total of 8,288 students graduate, ranging from diploma to doctorate levels.

Expressing deep concern, the Chancellor said the once clean Ayensu River—used for drinking, cooking, and irrigation—has now become “milky, toxic, and contaminated with mercury and cyanide” due to illegal mining.

He further condemned incidents where illegal miners have allegedly attacked state security personnel, describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable.

Neenyi Ghartey VII urged the government to equip the National Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce (NAIMOS) with modern technology to strengthen the fight against galamsey nationwide.

The Central Regional Minister, Ekow Okyere Panyin, also appealed to academia to collaborate with the government in efforts to protect Ghana’s water bodies from further destruction.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, echoed the call to safeguard the environment and additionally endorsed the use of Ghanaian languages at the primary level to improve foundational learning.

Anyone who believes my past statements are defamatory or criminal can petition the court – Ashanti Regional Minister https://www.adomonline.com/anyone-who-believes-my-past-statements-are-defamatory-or-criminal-can-petition-the-court-ashanti-regional-minister/ Mon, 01 Dec 2025 09:27:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605596 Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has warned the public against abusing freedom of speech to defame individuals, emphasizing that unsubstantiated claims can tarnish reputations and undermine national efforts.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Amoakohene addressed recent allegations by Windell Yeboah on Aluta FM, accusing regional ministers in the Ashanti, Eastern, and Western Regions of involvement in illegal mining (galamsey).

He described the claims as baseless and harmful, stressing that the government remains committed to combating illegal mining and would not tolerate wrongdoing by its officials.

“Anyone who believes my past statements are defamatory or criminal can petition the court. There are laws in this country,” he stated.

Dr. Amoakohene added that the allegations against him and his fellow ministers constitute defamation, prompting him to instruct his lawyers to demand evidence from the accuser.

Although an apology letter was later issued, it did not address the specific claims, leading to the matter being escalated.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken statements from the ministers involved, while the accuser was arrested for allegedly failing to honour an invitation.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed confidence in the investigative process and called for the findings to be made public. “If they had any evidence, they would have petitioned for my resignation. This is not just about being a minister; defamation is defamation,” he said.

He affirmed that the ministers are prepared to cooperate fully with the police as investigations continue.

Galamsey debate heats up in Akyem Oda as MP clashes with Kotoku Krontihene [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-debate-heats-up-in-akyem-oda-as-mp-clashes-with-kotoku-krontihene-listen/ Sat, 29 Nov 2025 11:08:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605125 Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has clashed with Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyere, the Akyem Kotoku Krontihene, over illegal mining in the constituency.

Speaking during a galamsey dialogue at the Akyem Oda lorry station when the Dwaso Nsem team visited, Mr. Acquah questioned why the chief raised concerns about galamsey in the local market.

“Do we do galamsey in the market? The market is not a galamsey site. Why should Nana bring such issues here?” he asked.

“You don’t bring something that will denigrate your own seat when we are having a meaningful discussion. No one is a kid here; everyone is a man. I don’t know if Nana is doing politics or not, but I respect the chief and don’t want to disrespect him. Still, he should have been careful not to bring this issue here,” the MP added.

Mr. Acquah also dismissed claims that illegal mining only began under the NDC administration.

“During the NPP time, there was galamsey in Akyem Oda too. Even when I was MP, some people carried out illegal mining in the market area while we were building a new market,” he said.

He stated that Ghana has laws regulating mining and stressed the importance of following legal procedures.

The Krontihene, meanwhile, was reacting to Mr. Acquah’s earlier assertion that Akyem Oda was galamsey-free during the NPP regime.

The chief questioned the MP’s claim, saying, “Even during your time as MP, illegal mining occurred. Some of your own constituents carried out galamsey in the market while you were in office. To say there was no galamsey during the NPP era is simply not true.”

The exchange highlights the continuing tension over illegal mining in the constituency, with both the MP and traditional authorities pointing fingers over responsibility and enforcement.

CDD-Ghana boss slams police for “wasting resources” on defamation arrest instead of fighting galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/cdd-ghana-boss-slams-police-for-wasting-resources-on-defamation-arrest-instead-of-fighting-galamsey/ Sat, 29 Nov 2025 09:55:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605284 The Executive Director of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Governance (CDD-Ghana), Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, has criticised the Ghana Police Service (GPS) over the arrest of a suspect accused of making false claims about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).

Prof. Prempeh, who also chairs the Constitutional Review Committee, said the police are “wasting scarce resources” on political defamation matters that should be resolved through civil processes. He argued that the nation’s limited security resources must instead be directed toward fighting the escalating environmental crisis posed by galamsey.

The criticism follows the arrest of Wendell Nana Yaw Yeboah, Head of Mobilisation for the civil society group Democracy Hub, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

Prempeh’s Charge: Misuse of State Resources

Reacting in a Facebook post, Prof. Prempeh questioned why the police were involving themselves in disputes over personal reputation when Ghana is confronted with what he described as an existential environmental threat.

He maintained that such arrests amount to a “complete waste of scarce resources,” noting that any public official who feels defamed has adequate civil remedies available under Ghana’s legal system, which abolished criminal libel years ago.

“Why is this a Police matter? The defamed Minister has a right to cause his alleged defamer to retract and apologise or face a civil defamation suit for damages. No need for Police involvement,” he wrote.

Prof. Prempeh also challenged what he sees as selective enforcement by the police.

“Will the Police arrest a person who defames me, or is this Police Anti-Defamation Service reserved for Ministers and government officials? Go and fight galamsey, and stop wasting scarce resources policing defamatory speech against big people in government.”

The Real Threat: Environmental Devastation

His comments draw attention to what he says is a glaring imbalance in state priorities. Illegal mining is estimated to have contaminated a large share of Ghana’s major water bodies, with dangerous chemicals such as mercury and cyanide posing severe public health and economic risks.

Prof. Prempeh argues that the police’s time, logistics, and intelligence efforts—already constrained by limited funding—should be deployed toward combating galamsey to protect the country’s environment and long-term wellbeing, rather than focusing on the reputations of public office holders who have viable civil legal pathways for redress.

During the NPP’s time, there was no galamsey in Oda like we are seeing now – Akyem Oda MP [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/during-the-npps-time-there-was-no-galamsey-in-oda-like-we-are-seeing-now-akyem-oda-mp-listen/ Fri, 28 Nov 2025 12:55:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605116 Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has raised concerns over the increasing galamsey activities in his constituency, saying the situation is far worse now compared to when the NPP was in government.

Speaking during a galamsey dialogue at the Akyem Oda lorry station when the Adom FM morning show Dwaso Nsem team visited, he stressed the need for strict enforcement against illegal mining.

He said, “During the NPP’s time, there was no galamsey in Oda like we are seeing now. Anybody caught doing galamsey should be prosecuted—not just fined or asked to do reclamation.”

Mr. Acquah noted that although efforts are being made to reclaim lands, some residents have reportedly blocked these exercises. “Even when reclamation exercises were about to start, some people refused to allow it,” he said.

He added that the recent attention on the issue has helped reduce galamsey in his constituency. “If galamsey is going down now, it is because of the attention I have brought to the situation. I am proud that I called it out,” he said.

According to the MP, other districts engage more in galamsey than Akyem Oda because of the vigilance and reporting in his area. He recalled, “I remember one person who was arrested for galamsey and has now obtained a license to operate legally.”

On the role of government and politics, he stressed, “I am not against mining. We need not politicize galamsey. Let’s call it as it is. There is a government in place, and it promised to deal with these issues.”

Mr. Acquah also expressed concern about the impact of galamsey on the local water supply. “The operators of the dam that supplies water to Akyem Oda and beyond have reported that galamsey is affecting the water. As an MP, I could not keep mute. People should be careful; galamsey is worse now.”

He further disclosed the presence of some youth in town who, he says, are focused on illegal mining.

“Some youth are here, and they are all here to do galamsey. We must be vigilant and ensure government programs are not disrupted.”

The MP concluded by noting the difference between his term and the current administration. “During my time, there was essentially no galamsey in Akyem Oda. Now, under the current NDC government, the problem has worsened,” he said.

Speaking during a galamsey dialogue at Akyem Oda lorry station when the Dwaso Nsem team visited, he explained that historically, chiefs were responsible for identifying which lands were suitable for mining and which were reserved for other purposes.

“First, these lands belonged to the chiefs. We know which lands are good, which are reserved, and what it takes to manage them. But now, the government has taken all our powers and centralised licensing in Accra,” he said.

He noted that some miners even arrive claiming to have government-issued licenses, often mining on lands where chiefs still perform traditional rituals.

“For example, in the Abrem area, there’s a forest where the chiefs conduct their amamere. When the NPP was about to leave power, they gave concessions to people to mine there. When the Kotoku chief complained, he was blamed. The government has taken over our lands,” he added.

Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo who is also a prominent traditional leader within the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, stressed that the government does not consult local authorities before granting mining licenses.

“They don’t even talk to us to seek our consent, even though we are supposed to oversee the lands. The government must know they are responsible for this illegal mining,” he said.

He, however, noted some progress in Oda, saying illegal mining has reduced due to enforcement efforts in areas such as the GCB concession in Akwatia.

“Oda galamsey has reduced because arrests have been made. If someone says there was no illegal mining, they are lying. People are mining, but legally now,” he stated.

The Krontihene also stressed the environmental toll of galamsey, pointing out its destructive impact on water bodies and forest reserves across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the paramount chief, Osuodumgya Barima Apea-Dwaah Boafo II, at a press conference in Hwidiem, the Mawerehene, Nana Nsiah Awuah, said the traditional council condemns and does not in any way support the lawless actions of the youth in attacking NAIMOS, which is legally mandated to combat illegal mining (galamsey).

According to him, the traditional council fully supports the government in taking all necessary measures to apprehend those responsible for the attack, sending a strong message that interference with NAIMOS’s work will not be tolerated.

He explained that the council had delayed commenting on the matter to allow the President to take the appropriate action.

Meanwhile, the Adontenhene, Nana Baffour Kyei Anaafi, appealed to the government to release any innocent individuals who were arrested during the military and police swoop that followed the youth attack on the NAIMOS team.

He added that the traditional council has committed to alerting the Ghana Police Service if they identify anyone in the Hwidiem community connected to the attack.

Ghana’s rivers tell the story of our failure in galamsey fight – Erastus Asare Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-rivers-tell-the-story-of-our-failure-in-galamsey-fight-erastus-asare-donkor/ Fri, 28 Nov 2025 06:53:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2604814 Multiple award-winning investigative journalist with the Multimedia Group, Erastus Asare Donkor, has expressed deep concern over the worsening state of Ghana’s river bodies due to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Delivering the keynote address at CDD-Ghana’s 20th Kronti Ne Akwamu lecture on Thursday, November 27, he said the condition of the country’s rivers reflects a collective national failure.

According to him, a tour across Ghana reveals the scale of devastation.

“When you travel across Ghana today, our rivers tell the story of our failure. The Pra, Offin, Ankobra, Birim, Tano, Densu, Ayensu, Butre, Ashyire, Offin, Oda, Bia, Bissi, Oweri, Atronsu – once sources of life – now flow like wounds across our conscience. They have turned brown, heavy, and lifeless,” he said.

He noted that although the contaminants in these rivers are well-known to researchers and policymakers, the crisis continues to deepen.

Recalling his investigative documentary Poisoned for Gold, Mr Donkor said samples collected from several polluted rivers and analysed at KNUST’s Health Laboratory revealed worrying levels of toxic heavy metals.

Arsenic, cadmium, chromium and lead were detected in quantities exceeding safe limits — in some cases recording over 200 per cent above World Health Organisation standards.

He added that numerous studies conducted by scientists from the University of Mines and Technology, the University of Energy and Natural Resources, and KNUST have consistently confirmed alarming contamination levels caused by irresponsible mining practices.

Mr Donkor stressed that these degraded rivers were once vital freshwater sources that supported farming, fishing, and livelihoods across the country, but today, they are dangerously compromised.

Your piece is now clean, coherent and professionally polished.

Ashanti Region contributes 50% of illegal mining – GNASSM Communications Director claims https://www.adomonline.com/ashanti-region-contributes-50-of-illegal-mining-gnassm-communications-director-claims/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 10:02:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2604534 The Director of Communications for the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), Abdul Razak Alhassan, has alleged that the Ashanti Region alone accounts for nearly 50 percent of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

Speaking on Burning Issues, Mr. Alhassan said the majority of challenges faced by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) originate from the region.

He further claimed that some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ashanti are actively involved in illegal mining and are obstructing the work of the anti-galamsey taskforce.

According to him, attempts by NAIMOS to visit certain communities to educate residents on the dangers of illegal mining and introduce government-approved mining programmes have been met with resistance from individuals benefiting from the illicit trade.

“If I tell you the kind of challenges the NAIMOS taskforce is going through, especially in the Ashanti Region, you will be shocked. Some people even prevent NAIMOS from entering communities because powerful individuals are involved,” he alleged.

Mr. Alhassan added that politically connected individuals have influenced community members to turn hostile toward NAIMOS, resulting in attacks on anti-galamsey personnel.

He described the Ashanti Region as the headquarters of galamsey, stressing that it accounts for the largest environmental destruction linked to illegal mining.

“If the government can address galamsey in the Ashanti Region, we will be tackling almost half of the country’s illegal mining problem,” he said.

On reclamation, Mr. Alhassan revealed that some individuals falsely claim to be restoring mined lands but instead use the opportunity to continue illegal mining. He urged the government to thoroughly investigate such activities and strengthen oversight.
