The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ordered a sweeping raid on an illegal mining site at Bui Sobinso, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals, including 14 Chinese nationals and 10 Ghanaians.

The operation, led by a high-powered police team consisting of six senior officers and 130 personnel, marks a significant step in the fight against illegal mining activities threatening Ghana’s natural reserves.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, Dr Bissiw described the incident as a “hostage-style” ambush by a group suspected to be linked to the illegal mining network.

According to her, the team, which included journalists, came under gunfire and had their vehicles attacked with machetes, with armed individuals attempting to prevent the arrest and transfer of the Chinese suspects.

“Even in the village, we had this group coming and besieging the place – basically holding us hostage. Gunshots were everywhere, and they wouldn’t allow us to go with the Chinese,” Dr Bissiw said. “They were hitting the vehicles with machetes… it was a life-and-death situation.”

After a tense struggle, the team managed to reach the Nyinahin Police Station.

However, Dr Bissiw alleged that police officers at the station attempted to redirect them, pressuring the team to release the arrested Chinese nationals.

“That’s when I really got upset. After all we’d been through in the village, I told the police commander that we weren’t leaving even a pin behind,” she stated. “It happened in your jurisdiction, and it’s just around the corner.”

Galamsey: Illegal fuel station uncovered in Jimmirah Forest Reserve https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-illegal-fuel-station-uncovered-in-jimmirah-forest-reserve/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 18:08:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542176 The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) and security agencies in a joint operation have uncovered an illegal fuel station deep within the Jimmirah Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.

The station is believed to supply fuel to the earth-moving equipment deployed in the illegal mining operations.

The team uncovered the illegal station during a raid on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

As part of the operation, several foreigners believed to be involved in illegal mining activities commonly known as galamsey within the forest reserve.

Addressing journalists, the Administrator of MDF, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, criticised the environmental degradation caused by the activities in the area.

“The community is fed up, and in fact, the communities are fed up. They are fed up that they destroy the land, they destroy the water bodies, and at the end of the day, they are going to blame the government because when they want water, the government has to provide it,” she lamented.

Contrary to the government’s decision to deport foreigners arrested for galamsey, Dr. Bissiw suggested that they must face the law.

“For these Chinese who say they don’t feel sorry for what they have done, they have destroyed our water bodies, and they have done so much.

“We will also make sure that the law takes its course. If they are going to be deported, it should not be before they pay for the restoration of Offin,” she said.

We’ll regulate excavator imports to curb galamsey – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/well-regulate-excavator-imports-to-curb-galamsey-mahama/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 09:21:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541201 President John Mahama has outlined stringent measures to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey,’ by tightening regulations on the importation of excavators.

He revealed that Ghana currently has more excavators than any other African country, a situation he says is fuelling the galamsey menace.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit in Accra on June 2, 2025, President Mahama decried the destruction of water bodies and forest reserves by individuals who import excavators to engage in illegal mining activities.

To curb the problem, he announced that the government has initiated measures, including a revised permitting regime for excavator imports.

“We intend to change the permitting regime. Ghana has more excavators in this country than in the whole of Africa. We are going to change the permitting regime. You will not be allowed to import an excavator or put it on a ship unless you get a permit before you can ship an excavator,” he said.

He added that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is working with key stakeholders and security agencies to clamp down on illegal mining.

President Mahama also disclosed that, through collaboration with small-scale miners, the government has successfully reclaimed 8 out of 9 forest reserves that were previously invaded by illegal miners.

“Our river guards are working on clearing many activities in our water bodies and the banks of our rivers,” he noted.

He gave the assurance that the government will enforce environmental regulations and promote socially acceptable mining practices to protect the country’s natural resources.

I am not involved in galamsey – Wontumi insists https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-not-involved-in-galamsey-wontumi-insists/ Tue, 27 May 2025 07:05:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538888

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reiterated that he is not involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Chairman Wontumi firmly stated that he has always engaged in responsible mining and therefore cannot be linked to any galamsey activities.

He made these remarks while addressing journalists after an interrogation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday.

“I was invited by the police and charged with being involved in galamsey. I presented my licence to them to prove that I do not engage in illegal mining or galamsey,” he said.

“They also claimed I was working in the forest, but I told them it wasn’t me. If they have any evidence, they should show it to me,” he added.

While admitting to applying for a licence to operate in a forest area, he clarified that the application was not approved.

Chairman Wontumi explained that the Forestry Commission, Lands Commission, and Minerals Commission informed him that the land in question had been designated for protection.

“So, if anyone is working there now, I am not aware of it,” he said.

Barima Tetepo expressed deep concern over the destructive impact of galamsey, stating that the activity has encroached on residential areas, posing serious threats to the lives of residents—particularly children.

He issued a stern warning to illegal miners and cautioned community members against collaborating with them.

According to the chief, traditional authorities in the area are determined to reclaim degraded lands and repurpose them for developmental projects that will benefit the entire community.

While acknowledging that some women derive income from galamsey, Barima Tetepo stressed that the long-term environmental damage far outweighs any short-term financial gains.

His initiative aims to restore the environment and safeguard the health and well-being of current and future generations in Akyem Saamang.

CDM slams GoldBod budget as ‘greed over green’ in galamsey fight https://www.adomonline.com/cdm-slams-goldbod-budget-as-greed-over-green-in-galamsey-fight/ Wed, 21 May 2025 13:56:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536981 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticized the Mahama administration for allocating US$279 million to the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) for gold purchases, while failing to dedicate any funds toward reclaiming degraded lands and polluted rivers.

The group described this decision as a “deliberate policy choice” that prioritizes revenue generation over environmental restoration, putting Ghana’s fragile ecosystems at greater risk.

In a statement, the CDM emphasized that the absence of funding for environmental recovery exposes the administration’s true intentions.

“Promises without funding are lies. And the budget has revealed the truth,” the statement read.

Accusing the government of moral bankruptcy, the CDM argued that a state-funded gold agency cannot operate “in a moral vacuum” while illegal mining ravages the environment unchecked.

“This is a cruel irony,” the group said. “A body set up to benefit from mining cannot ignore the environmental carnage it feeds on. The failure to pair gold procurement with reclamation funding is unjust and unacceptable.”

The CDM further stated that the Mahama administration has lost the moral right to speak on environmental protection.

Among its demands, the group called for public disclosure of all illegal mining concessions, a nationwide moratorium on mining in water bodies, and a parliamentary inquiry into the government’s handling of the galamsey crisis.

“If President Mahama cannot take action to save our rivers, then he is no different from those destroying them,” the statement concluded.

IGP orders major raid on illegal mining hub at Wassa Gyapa https://www.adomonline.com/igp-orders-major-raid-on-illegal-mining-hub-at-wassa-gyapa/ Tue, 20 May 2025 06:44:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536327 The Inspector General of Police has ordered a major raid on illegal gold mining operations in Wassa Gyapa, following persistent reports by JoyNews on the growing menace.

The Wassa communities of Gyapa, Dadieso, and Ntwentwena have, since 2023, become hotspots for illegal mining activity, with residents digging massive pits in homes and along major roads.

The Ayamfuri-Diaso road has been especially affected, with large excavations turning the area into what police now describe as a “notorious illegal mining criminal zone.”

Acting on a report by JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor, the IGP, Mr. Tetteh Yohuno, directed a full-scale police operation to dismantle illegal mining infrastructure in the area and along the main Ayamfuri road.

Led by Vitus Napen of the Asankragua Divisional Police Headquarters and Chief Superintendent William Jabialu, the anti-galamsey operation was carried out under the supervision of ASPOL/OPS/WCR Mr. De-Ben Edem Selassie. They were supported by eight senior officers and ninety-two personnel.

The operation specifically targeted mining activities approximately 500 meters off the Kumasi-Tarkwa highway.

Officers stormed Wassa Gyapa, arresting 13 suspects believed to be actively engaged in illegal mining.

The arrested individuals are: Nana Ampadu, 58; Stephen Tetteh, 18; Yaw Dalame, 23; Samuel Amoah, 20; Kwame Oppong, 19; and Francis Oduom, 18.

The others are: Owusu Asare, 36; Atta Kwame, 18; Apiyanga Emmanuel, 28; Kojo Montanakito, 23; Maxwell Owusu, 19; Obofo Vincent, 22; and Soogal Fataw, 19.

In addition to the arrests, over 120 changfang machines used for illegal mining were disabled, and six motorbikes were confiscated.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court on May 20, 2025.

The seized motorbikes will be presented as evidence.

Police say the operation will be sustained until illegal mining is eliminated from the area. The five-hour operation concluded at 3:30 p.m. without incident.

The Koforidua Circuit Court B has granted bail to 14 individuals arrested for engaging in illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, at Akyem Muoso in the Eastern Region.

Each suspect was granted bail in the sum of GH¢350,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified with movable property.

The suspects were arrested by the Eastern South Regional Police Command on May 15, 2025, and arraigned the following day, May 16.

During the arrest, police retrieved a pump-action gun from one of the suspects, identified as Zuberu Nuhoho. He reportedly failed to provide documentation for the weapon.

Additionally, law enforcement officials recovered two excavator control boards from the mining site, according to a police statement.

The suspects are expected to reappear in court as investigations continue.

Coalition against galamsey demands prosecution of Akonta Mining https://www.adomonline.com/coalition-against-galamsey-demands-prosecution-of-akonta-mining/ Mon, 19 May 2025 08:55:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2535958 The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has called for the immediate prosecution of Akonta Mining Company Limited for their involvement in illegal mining in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Coalition expressed “shock and disappointment” over what it described as government inaction.

The Coalition accused the government of failing to act on clear evidence of the devastation caused by Akonta Mining.

“This is the time to send a strong and unambiguous message to politically exposed persons that impunity will not be tolerated, whether under the cover of political association, high social status, or any other privilege.

The fight against galamsey must be fair, fearless, and uncompromising. The government must prove its commitment by ensuring that justice is served swiftly and without exception,” the statement noted.

The concerns of the group follow a revelation by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and the subsequent revocation of the company’s license in April 2025.

The Minister cited “overwhelming evidence” of illegal mining and criminal syndication as the basis for the decision.

Mr. Buah added that the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine, had been briefed and had taken over the investigations.

In this regard, the Coalition noted that the Ministry’s findings provided sufficient grounds for prosecution — yet no legal action has been taken.

They warned that the failure to prosecute the company and any complicit government officials sends a dangerous message of impunity and selective justice.

The Coalition has therefore called for the arrest and prosecution of officials from the Minerals Commission, Forestry Commission, and security services who may have aided, abetted, or negligently enabled Akonta Mining’s illegal operations.

“The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey recalls the government’s unmistakable promises to fight the menace of galamsey and restore the balance of Ghana’s ecology. While we acknowledge that the government has done well to freeze the accounts of Akonta Mining Ltd, which confirms its recognition of the company’s involvement in illegal activities, there is no justification for the continued delay in prosecuting those responsible.

We strongly urge the government to arrest and prosecute the Managing Director/CEO, all Directors of Akonta Mining Ltd, and any culpable government officials without further delay, as a clear testament of its commitment to fighting galamsey. The government must act decisively in accordance with Act 995 to demonstrate that no one is above the law,” the statement read in parts.

Meanwhile, Akonta Mining described the Minister’s comments as “reckless and baseless,” calling the move “a clear breach of natural justice and a politically motivated act.”

The company insisted that it holds valid leases and permits from the Minerals Commission and operates legally in Samreboi and Abokoase — not in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.

Galamsey: 9 arrested, 4 excavators seized in raid at Akani https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-9-arrested-4-excavators-seized-in-raid-at-akani/ Sat, 17 May 2025 11:13:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2535759 A special police team against illegal mining has intercepted and seized four excavators at Akani in the Western Region.

Two of the seized excavators were reportedly being escorted by armed men believed to be military personnel.

According to the Director of Special Operations at Police Headquarters, ACP Eric Asiedu, the operation was launched following credible intelligence indicating suspicious movement of heavy-duty mining equipment outside the Samreboï Township.

Led by ASP Mr. Adorye, the team of police officers proceeded to a location where they intercepted two low-bed trucks, each carrying an excavator.

The team had early on conducted a successful raid at a large illegal mining site identified as Akani, situated on the outskirts of Asankragua.

The operation resulted in the arrest of nine suspects and the seizure of mining equipment being used for illegal mining activities.

This operation forms part of the team’s sustained efforts to complement the vision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in combating illegal mining and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.

Police have since secured all equipment involved.

Konongo Odumase a ‘ticking time bomb’ as illegal mining creeps into homes https://www.adomonline.com/konongo-odumase-a-ticking-time-bomb-as-illegal-mining-creeps-into-homes/ Mon, 12 May 2025 12:40:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2534250 Environmental journalist with the Multimedia Group, Erastus Asare Donkor, has raised the alarm over a disturbing and dangerous phenomenon in Konongo Odumase in the Ashanti Region, where residents are reportedly living atop a vast network of illicit mine shafts dug directly beneath their homes.

Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk on Monday, 12 May, Mr. Donkor described the town as “a crime scene,” citing blatant violations of Ghana’s Minerals and Mining Act, which prohibits mining activities within human settlements and within 100 metres of public roads.

Despite these legal restrictions, residents — both landlords and tenants — are said to be complicit in, or at the very least aware of, illegal mining operations that have hollowed out large swathes of the town’s foundation.

“These are landlords and tenants in action. They know the repercussions; they are aware,” Mr. Donkor said.

He added: “They are the same people who blocked this particular road because they fear that if any heavy-duty vehicle passes that street, it could cave in.”

Perhaps most shocking is Mr. Donkor’s revelation that in some Konongo Odumase homes, the entrances to mine shafts are located inside bedrooms.

“If you see somebody entering a house in Odumase and you think that he is going to sleep or something, he is going down a pit,” he explained. “There are many of these houses like that.”

The journalist warned that the town is essentially built on a fragile foundation, with numerous underground tunnels threatening the structural integrity of buildings and roads. He cautioned that any significant tremor or ground movement could trigger a catastrophic collapse, endangering hundreds of lives.

Despite the clear danger and legal breaches, Mr. Donkor lamented the apparent inaction of authorities.

“Unfortunately, this is not a crime in the eyes of the police in Odumase,” he said. “Many of them know about this. They turn a blind eye to it. No arrests have been made. No attempts have been made to even stop this practice.”

Efforts by JoyNews to speak with the local chief on the matter were unsuccessful. According to Mr. Donkor, he was repeatedly told the chief was unavailable and unwilling to comment.

“Odumase is sitting on a ticking time bomb,” Mr. Donkor concluded. “If there is any major shake, we are bound to witness a major disaster in that town.”

Galamsey: Ghana loses 44 forest reserves, over 5,252 hectares destroyed https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-ghana-loses-44-forest-reserves-over-5252-hectares-destroyed/ Sat, 10 May 2025 18:58:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533770

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has said 44 forest reserves out of 288 in the country have been degraded, while over 5,252 hectares have been lost to illegal mining (galamsey).

He explained that river turbidity levels exceeded 5,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), far beyond the permissible 500 NTU, while toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide further endangered ecosystems and communities.

Mr Buah revealed this in a speech delivered on his behalf at the closing ceremony of the 4th Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining, organised by the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Fiapre, Bono Region, last Thursday.

The two-day dialogue was held under the theme: “Eliminating Illegal Mining in Ghana. The Will and the Bill.”

Data alarming, arrests

The minister said the government alone could not eradicate galamsey. “It requires the collective will of communities, industries, stakeholders, traditional leaders and environmental advocates,” he said.

Mr Buah said the data was alarming. Updating the gathering on the fight against galamsey, he revealed 150 excavators, five bulldozers and weapons had been confiscated, while 71 persons had been arrested.

Mr Buah said that due to enforcement, seven of nine previously inaccessible forest reserves had been cleared.

He said despite past interventions, illegal mining persisted, fuelled by weak political will, inconsistent enforcement and complicity at various levels of governance.

Mr Buah said other factors were security gaps, inadequate geological data, delay in prosecutions, foreign infiltration, greed and complicity among some politicians, traditional leaders and citizens.

Other issues, he mentioned, were the use of armed gangs by illegal miners to intimidate and resist enforcement and the unregulated equipment importation, such as excavators and other machinery.

Systemic change

Mr Buah said eradicating illegal mining demanded more than just laws, explaining that it required political will, collective action and systemic change.

He said the current government was resolute in its mission to eradicate the destructive practice and called for  collective action to eliminate the menace.

Mr Buah called for the strengthening of legal frameworks to ensure robust enforcement within the community, economic alternatives, and transparent governance to uphold ethical standards across the sector.

He said the government had adopted some strategies to facilitate a robust mining sector.

Mr Buah mentioned a licensing regime reform, where new licences would be issued at the district level with the involvement of traditional authorities and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Revoke licences

He said the government had revoked all post-December 2024 licences due to irregularities and replaced the Community Mining Scheme with a Cooperative Mining Scheme.

Mr Buah said excavators were now geo-tagged and monitored 24/7; and non-compliance triggers remote immobilisation.

He said all excavators imported into the country would be registered and tracked while those already in existence would be registered.

Mr Buah said the government had enhanced a more robust joint task force, made up of the military, police, and the Forestry Commission, to flush out illegal miners.

He urged the public to report illegal activities to eliminate illegal mining and build a sector that thrives on sustainability, equity and national pride.

Dialogue

The dialogue, he said, had not only highlighted the socio-economic contributions of ASM but had also confronted pressing issues such as environmental degradation and regulatory enforcement.

He explained that the ASM sector contributed significantly to the economy, accounting for a third of Ghana’s gold production, employing about three million people, and bolstering rural economies while supporting millions of livelihoods.

“Yet, its potential is undermined by the scourge of galamsey, which ravages our environment, pollutes water bodies and threatens public health,” Mr Buah said.

He said the scourge of galamsey threatened to eclipse the benefits, posing severe environmental, public health, and economic risks.

Galamsey: Forestry Commission demands military presence to reclaim Jimirah forest https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-forestry-commission-demands-military-presence-to-reclaim-jimirah-forest/ Thu, 08 May 2025 19:51:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533190 The Jimirah Forest in the Nkawie Forestry District of the Ashanti Region has come under siege from illegal miners operating under the protection of armed thugs.

Since the beginning of the year, Forestry Commission officers have been unable to access the area due to threats posed by these heavily armed individuals providing security for the miners.

It has taken military intervention for Commission officials to inspect the damage caused in the forest.

Failed Attempts and Escalation

According to the Nkawie District Manager of the Forestry Commission, Abraham Essel, efforts made in January to remove the illegal miners were thwarted by the presence of weapon-wielding guards.

“We tried to mobilise to come and flush them out, but we realised they were conducting the operations under the protection of thugs who were wielding offensive weapons, and we could not access this place,” he recounted.

At dawn on Thursday, a team of military officers was deployed for an operation. However, by the time they arrived, the miners had fled the area, taking most of their equipment with them. Excavators and other machinery found at the site had been demobilised.

Tracks led the team to eight parked excavators hidden within the Adobewora community.

The Acting Executive Director of the Forestry Commission, Lydia Opoku, and Ashanti Regional Manager Clement Omari supported and joined the operation.

Environmental Devastation

Illegal mining has led to the destruction of vast portions of forest cover. Land has been haphazardly dug up, and vegetation stripped in the search for gold.

“Among the affected areas is a mature plantation owned by Tepa Sawmill, a private company. “They established the plantation so many years ago—a Cinderella Plantation—and the plantation is matured for harvesting,” said Mr Essel.

“The Forestry Commission Headquarters granted us authorisation to value the trees for the company to fell, but we couldn’t access the place because of the illegal miners.” Although a full assessment is yet to be completed, the Commission estimates the affected trees to be worth millions of cedis. Some trees had been harvested, but the majority were reportedly destroyed.

Even more alarming is the damage done to the River Punpuni, which runs through the forest. Once a vital water source for local farmers, the river has now been silted due to the destructive mining activities.

According to Mr Essel, “The whole ecosystem has lost its resilience and health. The activities of the illegal miners are greatly impacting the sustainable forest practices we do.”

Call for a Military Base in the Forest

The military has supported the Forestry Commission in prior operations, including one in February. In total, nine excavators have been confiscated during joint missions, though no arrests have yet been made.

Mr Essel is now calling for a permanent military presence in the area.

“It has gone beyond the Forestry Commission. It has become a security matter because, as a Forest officer, you come to the field, you don’t have a catapult to protect yourself, and these illegal miners are protected by heavily built and weapon-wielding thugs,” he lamented.

“Looking at the gravity of the situation, we will advise or suggest that we have some permanent military presence within this enclave so that at any point in time, there will be their presence on the ground,” he insisted.

Regional Manager Clement Omari, who was part of the forest visit, fully supported the call for a military base.

Appeal to Local Communities

The Commission has also called on local communities, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to support efforts in protecting the forest reserves.

“We are very surprised that this time round the communities don’t seem to support our cause because the excavators, when they move them, are parked in the communities. The excavators come into the communities at night, and the community members can help us,” Mr Essel said.

Acting Executive Director Lydia Opoku echoed the need for community cooperation, stressing that forest protection is a shared responsibility.

Vanderpuye clarifies Mahama’s stance on galamsey timeline https://www.adomonline.com/vanderpuye-clarifies-mahamas-stance-on-galamsey-timeline/ Thu, 08 May 2025 10:15:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532913

Former Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has expressed concern over public misunderstanding of President Mahama’s position on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

He clarified that the President never promised to resolve the complex issue within a strict 120-day timeframe, emphasizing that no such commitment was made in any of Mahama’s public statements. Vanderpuye urged for a more accurate and nuanced discussion on the matter, considering the profound impact of galamsey on local communities.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye acknowledged President Mahama’s determination to end illegal mining but reiterated the absence of a specific deadline for achieving that goal.

“It is not a fight that will end in 120 days, and President Mahama did not say anywhere that within 120 days he will end galamsey. He said he will end galamsey, so it could be today, one year, or beyond,” he stated.

He encouraged the public to focus on the administration’s commitment to addressing the issue, rather than expecting a rapid resolution to what he described as a complex and longstanding national challenge.

“What we should focus on is the effort being put into the fight and the level of commitment being shown, which must be embraced by all of us to end this menace,” he added.

His comments come amid ongoing public debate regarding the government’s anti-galamsey campaign and claims related to the administration’s achievements within its first 120 days in office.

10 illegal miners arrested in Boin Forest Reserve https://www.adomonline.com/10-illegal-miners-arrested-in-boin-forest-reserve/ Tue, 06 May 2025 12:26:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532141

Ten individuals have been arrested for engaging in galamsey activities within the protected Boin Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality of Ghana’s Western North Region.

The operation was carried out through a coordinated effort between the Enchi Forest Division and military personnel tasked with safeguarding the country’s natural resources.

The suspects were apprehended in a section of the forest located close to the border with Ivory Coast, an area increasingly targeted by illegal miners due to its rich mineral deposits and difficult terrain.

Enchi Forest Division Manager, Joe Appiah Frimpong, confirmed the arrests and stated that the individuals had been handed over to the police at Enchi for further investigation and prosecution.

He emphasized that the arrests were part of a larger, ongoing effort to clamp down on unauthorized mining operations that continue to degrade Ghana’s forest reserves.

Illegal mining poses a significant threat to Ghana’s forests, water bodies, and farmlands, and the Boin Forest Reserve has been particularly vulnerable in recent years.

Mr. Frimpong issued a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in similar activities, stating that the Enchi Forest Division, in collaboration with security agencies, will not relent in its mandate to preserve the integrity of Ghana’s forest lands.

Illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, have taken a deadly turn in the Sehwi Akontombra District of the Western North Region, with four tragic deaths recorded in April alone.

Local reports indicate that the victims whose deaths occurred at different galamsey sites in Ankra, Essase, and Sampa died after slipping into dams dug for illegal mining operations.

These incidents have thrown the affected communities into mourning and sparked renewed concerns over the dangers associated with unregulated mining.

Beyond the heartbreaking loss of lives, the impact of galamsey in the district continues to deepen.
Vast stretches of land, cocoa farms, forests, and vital water bodies are being destroyed by the miners, leaving behind environmental destruction that threatens both livelihoods and public health.

Speaking to Adom News, the Sehwi Akontombra District Police Commander, ASP Samuel Atta, confirmed the incidents and assured the public that the police are intensifying efforts to clamp down on the illegal operations.

He outlined several ongoing measures aimed at restoring order and curbing the galamsey menace.

Meanwhile, some concerned residents have called on the government to step in urgently. They say the illegal miners have become emboldened, allegedly backed by political figureswhich has complicated local attempts to end the practice.

The residents warn that without swift and decisive intervention, more lives could be lost and the district’s natural resources irreparably destroyed.

Galamsey: Excavator operator arrested in Pranum Forest Reserve https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-excavator-operator-arrested-in-pranum-forest-reserve/ Fri, 02 May 2025 16:56:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531117 The Forestry Commission in Akyem Oda, in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region, has arrested an excavator operator, Ahmed Nuhu, for engaging in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, within the Pranu Forest Reserve.

Nuhu was apprehended during an operation led by Assistant District Manager Richmond Amo-Adjei, during which his accomplices fled the scene.

Mr. Amo-Adjei explained that his team acted on intelligence about galamsey operations in the Pranu Forest Reserve near Asante Akyem. The forestry guards responded swiftly and arrested Ahmed Nuhu, an excavator operator, while two excavator machines were abandoned by the fleeing accomplices.

The suspect has since been handed over to the Dwaso Police for further investigation, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Mr. Amo-Adjei further cautioned galamsey operators to stay away from the Pranu Forest Reserve, stressing that it is a no-go area for such activities.

He also urged residents living nearby to report any signs of forest destruction to the Forestry Commission to enable prompt action and protect the reserve.

Goldbod will end up in the hands of galamseyers – Afenyo-Markin https://www.adomonline.com/goldbod-will-end-up-in-the-hands-of-galamseyers-afenyo-markin/ Fri, 02 May 2025 12:02:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531020 The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised serious concerns about the government’s Goldbod initiative program, warning that it could ultimately benefit illegal miners, known locally as galamseyers, rather than serve the national interest.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, 2nd May, he criticised the program for lacking the necessary safeguards to prevent abuse and misappropriation.

According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, while the intention behind Goldbod may seem noble, the reality suggests otherwise.

“This whole idea of Goldbod is not in the national interest. We’ve seen similar programs before, and they end up in the hands of galamseyers and politically connected individuals,” he stated.

He argued that without strict regulation and oversight, the initiative would simply become another conduit for illegal mining activities.

The Minority Leader further questioned the government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining, pointing out contradictions between policy announcements and enforcement.

“How do you say you’re combating galamsey and at the same time roll out a scheme that could easily be hijacked by the very actors destroying our environment?” he asked.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called for a thorough review of the program and greater stakeholder consultation to ensure transparency and accountability.

He concluded by urging the government to prioritise long-term environmental protection over short-term financial gains.

“If we truly care about the future of our natural resources, then we must design policies that are sustainable and resistant to abuse. Goldbod, in its current form, does not meet that test,” he insisted.

Charles Owusu urges Mahama to tackle galamsey with military force https://www.adomonline.com/charles-owusu-urges-mahama-to-tackle-galamsey-with-military-force/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 11:12:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530383 Governance advocate and former Forestry Commission official, Rev. Charles Owusu, has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to take bold and decisive action against illegal mining.

He warned that failure to do so would be a major letdown, especially considering his previous experience in office.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, April 29, Charles Owusu described illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—as a national crisis that must be addressed beyond political lines.

He called for immediate intervention, including deploying the Ghana Armed Forces to guard the country’s forest reserves.

“I’ll be disappointed if Mahama fails in this galamsey fight. He’s tried and failed before, so he knows what’s at stake. If by tomorrow all forest zones are declared military zones, galamsey will end,” he said.

Rev. Owusu argued that the lack of political will is the biggest obstacle, suggesting that illegal miners often receive protection from political actors.

“We all know that depending on who is in power, their own people are involved. That’s why harsh actions are avoided,” he added.

He dismissed the idea that repealing existing mining laws like LI 2462 would solve the problem, stating that enforcement—not legislation—is the real issue.

He called for the creation of a dedicated Forest Protection Unit within the Ghana Armed Forces to safeguard the country’s dwindling green spaces.

“God didn’t give us gold to destroy ourselves. Our forests are disappearing, water bodies are polluted, and yet we’re doing nothing because we’re afraid to confront those behind it,” he lamented.

Rev. Owusu further highlighted the inconsistency in political narratives, recalling how the then-opposition NDC demanded swift action from President Akufo-Addo, only for the problem to persist under their own watch.

He further proposed restricting small-scale mining to Ghanaians, questioning the unchecked operations of foreign nationals and large mining companies in the sector.

“You have just four years. Use your power to end this. Bring together the Lands Ministry, Forestry Commission, Lands Commission, and security chiefs. Declare the forests a military zone. If you do that, we won’t be talking about galamsey on the radio anymore,” he said.

Fight against Galamsey requires non-partisan approach – Former Peace Council Chairman https://www.adomonline.com/fight-against-galamsey-requires-non-partisan-approach-former-peace-council-chairman/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:21:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530143 The immediate past Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi has called for a united front and non-partisan approach in combating illegal mining which is wreaking havoc in the country.

He has urged the two major political parties in Parliament to work together in finding lasting solutions to the menace, rather than playing the blame game.

“We need minerals to support our country, but that doesn’t mean we should destroy it. There should be a balance between harnessing our resources to build our country and preserving it,” he stated.

Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi made the remark in an interview with Adom News during the 62nd Annual Refresher Course, Retreat, and Business Session of the Ghana Baptist Convention at Ejura in Ashanti region.

The three-day conference had the theme: “Ministers Pressing Forward, Finishing Strong”.

The former Executive President of the Baptist Convention encouraged ministers of the Baptist churches not to be discouraged in doing the Lord’s work but to commit themselves to crossing the finishing line.

“It’s not easy being a minister, especially in our locality where the local church takes care of you, unlike other places with a centralized system. It’s difficult for some of us to operate in certain circles,” he noted.

The 2025 retreat brought together ministers from local churches under the Ghana Baptist Convention.

On the issue of illegal mining, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi suggested that there should be proper public education rather than solely relying on radical approaches to combat the menace

National Security operatives attempt to abscond with seized galamsey excavators https://www.adomonline.com/national-security-operatives-attempt-to-abscond-with-seized-galamsey-excavators/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 15:37:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530043 JoyNews has learned that a group of security operatives, who identified themselves as members of the National Security, allegedly attempted to remove five heavy-duty excavators from the office yard of the Ashanti Regional Forestry Commission.

According to JoyNews’ environmental journalist, Erastus Asare Donkoh, who has been closely covering the issue of illegal mining (galamsey) in the country, the armed men stormed the premises of the commission and made off with five of the machines.

Erastus reported that the men claimed they were acting on orders from a higher political authority to take the seized machines.

He noted that there was a confrontation between the commission’s officers and the security personnel, but the officers were overpowered, and the machines were driven away.

However, shortly after the machines were taken, the security men returned all five excavators to the commission. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the so-called political authority had ordered the return of the machines.

Erastus explained that these excavators had been seized by the commission from illegal miners operating within forest reserves in the Ashanti region.

At the time of this report, JoyNews could not confirm the individuals behind the action.

“It is still unclear who directed that the seized excavators from the Kyemira extension of the Offin Shelter Belt should be returned or released,” he told Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson on Joy FM’s midday news on Tuesday, 29th April.

The galamseyers’ regret: From digging gold to seeking forgiveness [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/the-galamseyers-regret-from-digging-gold-to-seeking-forgiveness-video/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 15:14:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529081 They once dug deep into the earth, searching for gold. But now, they are searching for peace—for their communities, their environment, and their own hearts.

Across universities in Ghana, young men who were once illegal miners, commonly known as galamseyers, are now sharing a different story. It is not a story of riches or success, but one of pain, regret, and a strong desire to make things right.

24-year-old university student, Yaw Attah (pseudonym) says he lost both parents on October 14, 2016. They were the ones supporting his education. After their death, his world changed.

“I had nobody to take care of me. I had to find something to do… that’s why I went into galamsey,” he said.

With no support, Yaw turned to illegal mining as his only hope for survival.

For years, he and others worked in dangerous illegal mining sites. They say the money helped them survive. It paid for food, clothing, and even school fees. But it came at a cost to Ghana’s rivers and forests.

“I am aware that galamsey activity is destroying our water bodies and forests. I just wanted to support my education. But today, I feel pain,” said Yaw. “We’ve caused damage to water bodies and the environment.”

Yaw, now studying Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood, says his journey to school was paid for by the same activity that harmed rivers, forests, and even human lives. He recalls how several of his friends died under strange and sad circumstances while working in galamsey.

“In the years I was involved in galamsey, many of my friends lost their lives. Some got into drug abuse, others ended up in child trafficking or prostitution. Some became very sick and can’t work anymore,” Yaw shared, his voice filled with pain.

A call for forgiveness and a fresh start

“I deeply regret going into galamsey,” Yaw said. “When I sit and think about what we did at those sites, I feel very sad. In the next ten years, our children, our brothers and sisters—how will they get clean water to drink or land to farm? It will be a big problem.”

Now, Yaw believes it is time to speak out—not just about the harm caused by illegal mining, but also to guide young people to make better choices.

“If I get the chance, I’ll go back to those communities and ask for forgiveness. I’ll tell the youth: there’s another way. Galamsey is not the only answer.”

He wants to use his education to educate others, especially those still trapped in illegal mining activities. But there’s one more challenge ahead: support to complete his education.

Yaw fears he may not be able to pay his school fees. He hopes for any support to help him finish school and become a stronger voice for change.

“I need help to stay in school.” He wants to be a different kind of miner—one that digs for truth, for justice, and for change.

From destroying to rebuilding

Yaw is not alone. Kojo Majeed (not his real name), a 27-year-old student in his third year of studying BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering, also shared his experience. Kojo says the dangers of galamsey are more than just environmental. For him, the cost was also human lives.

“I can count about 30 of my friends who died because of illegal mining,” he said.

When asked if he regrets being part of the destruction of Ghana’s rivers and forests, Kojo didn’t hesitate.

“Yes, I regret,” he said softly. I asked him why he feels this way. “It used to rain often, but now the weather has changed. It’s because of the destruction we caused to the forest and the environment,” he explained.

Kojo believes illegal mining has played a big role in the changing weather patterns in Ghana. But he is not just filled with regret—he wants to take action.

“Yes, I will do something to stop galamsey. I will also encourage my younger ones to stop because of the damage we’re causing,” he said. “Now, I plant. My goal is to help restore what we damaged.”

He is now focused on rebuilding what was broken—trees, land, and trust.

Like Yaw, Kojo wants to be part of a new movement led by them to protect and restore the forests.

Both Yaw and Kojo say some of their colleagues also in different universities are willing to help right the wrongs of the past. They admit they cannot erase the damage they caused, but they believe they can stop others from making the same mistakes.

“We know we can’t change what we did,” Yaw said. “But with support, we can help stop the youth from going down the same path.”

They were once buried in the mud of illegal mining. But now, they are rising one voice, one lesson, and one promise at a time. Together, they are calling for opportunities to join environmental campaigns and educate their peers—hoping to turn their regrets into real change.

Galamsey: 13 excavators seized, Chinese and others arrested in Ashanti region  https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-13-excavators-seized-chinese-and-others-arrested-in-ashanti-region/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 09:05:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528952

A dawn operation by the Ashanti Region Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has led to the seizure of 13 excavators and some arrests in illegal mining sites at the Adansi enclave.

Leader of the task force, Captain (Rtd) John Kwame Jabari, describes the operation as the most successful since the commencement of the fight.

He says all excavators and suspects targeted in their reconnaissance were arrested.

“It is the most successful because almost all the sites we went, we were able to pick the machines and arrest the culprits who are involved in the illegal mining activities,” he said.

The task force, in efforts to arrest perpetrators of the crime, is formulating new modalities for operation.

A review of operational strategy is driving the current success.

Captain (Retired) Jabari emphasised, “We have changed the modus operandi many times but this time we have been able to perfect it.”

According to the taskforce, the present phase of the operation is geared towards clearing waterways and halting the destruction of cocoa farms.

This follows what the leaders call a successful claw-back of some forest reserves that were being mined illegally.

The Adansi enclave is among the areas heavily affected by illegal mining.

Large tracts of land have been destroyed by the illegality, with many cocoa farms being the worst affected.

Captain (Retired) John Kwame Jabari indicated the operation was prompted by concerned residents within the catchment.

“Most of the time, it is not our own intelligence, the people report these illegality to us and we act on them”, he added.

Meanwhile, the task force continues to warn persons involved in perpetuating the illegality to desist from it.

Galamsey threatening our livelihoods – Suaman cocoa farmers appeal to COCOBOD CEO https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-threatening-our-livelihoods-suaman-cocoa-farmers-appeal-to-cocobod-ceo/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 15:41:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528790 Cocoa farmers in the Suaman District of the Western North Region have appealed to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey, to intervene urgently as illegal mining activities continue to destroy their farms and threaten their only source of livelihood.

The farmers made the call during a durbar at Ganyorkrom, held in honour of the COCOBOD CEO as part of his regional tour to engage cocoa stakeholders and assess sector-wide challenges.

The farmers described the situation as dire, citing the encroachment of illegal miners on cocoa farms, the destruction of arable land, and the pollution of water bodies as alarming developments that could cripple the local cocoa economy.

“Our cocoa farms are all we have, but these illegal miners are destroying everything,” one farmer stated, adding that if no action is taken, the community could soon lose its primary economic activity.

They urged Dr. Abbey to use his office to advocate stronger government action against illegal mining and called for more protection and support to safeguard cocoa-growing communities in the district.

In his response, Dr. Abbey expressed deep concern over the impact of galamsey on cocoa production and livelihoods. He assured the farmers that their complaints would be forwarded to the relevant state authorities.

He also criticized the previous administration for failing to complete even one-third of the national cocoa rehabilitation programme, despite exhausting the allocated resources.

Dr. Abbey reaffirmed COCOBOD’s commitment to protecting the interests of cocoa farmers and preserving the cocoa sector, which he described as a national treasure and a vital pillar of Ghana’s economy.

The Suaman District, like many others in the Western North Region, has become a hotspot for illegal mining, raising fears about environmental degradation and the long-term viability of cocoa farming.

Farmers in the area are hopeful that the CEO’s visit will lead to urgent government intervention and the restoration of their lands.

Minority lauds IGP, Interior Minister for reshuffling police commanders at galamsey areas https://www.adomonline.com/minority-lauds-igp-interior-minister-for-reshuffling-police-commanders-at-galamsey-areas/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 20:27:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528094 The Minority in Parliament has praised Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yahonu, and Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, for taking bold steps to transfer all police commanders in galamsey-prone areas.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament believe the move will help combat the illegal mining menace that has plagued the country for decades.

Ranking member of the Defense and Interior Committee in Parliament, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, speaking in an interview with Nana Osei Amponfo Adjei on Adom FM’s 6PM News (commonly known as Naket News), said the Minority had proposed such an action to the Minister during his vetting, and they are pleased to see it implemented.

“Galamsey is destroying the country’s resources, and we all need to come together to find a solution to it, devoid of political affiliation. My team at the vetting proposed to the minister that he should consider transferring police commanders in galamsey areas, so we are happy he has done that,” Fordjour said.

The Assin South Member of Parliament added that if all ministers would take advice, regardless of who is giving it, they would receive the support of the Minority.

“You see, this Interior Minister will be one of the best ministers because he is open to advice, and when he thinks something is fit, he implements it. That is what we expect from other ministers. So far, he is doing well, and we are happy with him,” Mr. Fordjour stated.

Galamsey: NDC never supported calls for a State of Emergency – Sammy Gyamfi [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-ndc-never-supported-calls-for-a-state-of-emergency-sammy-gyamfi-video/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 07:06:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527671 Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has refuted claims that he supported calls by civil society organizations (CSOs) for a state of emergency to be declared in areas affected by illegal mining during the Akufo-Addo administration.

According to him, the NDC, as a corporate body, never supported the calls for a state of emergency.

“Go and check me. I spoke on it even on Good Morning Ghana. I said I disagreed with them—that the problem was not to declare any state of emergency.

“What we had to do was to declare a state of emergency on Akufo-Addo and his gang and vote them out because they were the ones supervising the illegal mining menace,” he stated.

Mr. Gyamfi, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, while acknowledging that some individuals within the party had supported the calls.

“It was in 2017/18 when the NPP banned mining that we exported more gold, and such a feat has not been attained since then. The ban was a façade, and so I didn’t support calls for a state of emergency because they would have hidden behind it and taken people’s concessions,” he added.

Sammy Gyamfi’s clarification comes amid growing calls for President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency, as illegal mining activities continue to worsen.

There has been pressure on the President to follow through on his earlier promises to declare a state of emergency.

Meanwhile, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing illegal mining activities.

He stated that the government is exploring all possible measures, including declaring a state of emergency and temporarily banning small-scale mining, to clamp down on the menace.

The suspect was arrested today by the Special Anti-Galamsey Police Team during a targeted intelligence-led operation in Nkrankrom village in the Western Region.

The police team intercepted a pickup truck with an unlisted registration number and questioned the driver, who was unable to justify his presence in the forested area.

After sustained interrogation, he led police to a vast illegal mining site deep within the forest at Aowin Nkwanta, where he admitted to operating.

Police have since secured the site, and the suspect is currently assisting with investigations. More searches will be carried out in the coming days, with efforts underway to retrieve excavators and other mining equipment believed to be hidden in the area.

The operation forms part of intensified nationwide efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and preserve Ghana’s natural environment.

The operation, conducted as a follow-up based on credible intelligence, forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the area.

During a swift search of the seized equipment, security personnel discovered two pump-action shotguns and one single-barrel gun hidden inside the excavators.

Investigations are currently ongoing, and the suspects are in police custody assisting with further inquiries. Authorities say the operation signals their continued resolve to protect Ghana’s natural resources and enforce laws against illegal mining.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the excavators were actively operating within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve — a protected area that had been raided just a day earlier as part of the police’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with further investigations. Additional arrests and equipment seizures may follow as operations continue in the region.

Galamsey: Why deport foreigners? jail them here – Rev. Opuni Frimpong slams govt’s approach https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-why-deport-foreigners-jail-them-here-rev-opuni-frimpong-slams-govts-approach/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 10:15:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527380 Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to rescind his government’s decision to deport illegal miners, particularly foreign nationals, without prosecution.

According to Rev. Opuni Frimpong, the policy is a “defeatist approach” that weakens the country’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the outspoken clergyman described the decision as unfair and dangerous to Ghana’s justice system.

“This is not the kind of leadership we expect. Why should foreigners who come here to destroy our water bodies be sent back to their countries, while Ghanaians who commit the same offence are thrown into prison?” he questioned.

Rev. Opuni Frimpong added that this policy sends the wrong signal and gives foreigners a “comfortable ride” at the expense of the nation’s environment and laws.

“They always say pastors have kept quiet, but this is not about silence. We gave them the honeymoon period, but this is wrong, and it must be corrected,” he stated.

The President’s administration has faced backlash over this approach, which was first announced by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, and later reinforced by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The Ministry of the Interior claimed that the decision was influenced by loopholes in Ghana’s justice delivery system, which allowed some foreigners to escape prosecution.

As a result, the government opted to deport such individuals to be tried in their home countries.

However, Rev. Opuni Frimpong insists this is unacceptable.

DR OPUNI FRIMPONG ON GALAMSEY CHINESE

“If a Ghanaian breaks the law, they face the consequences here. Why should foreigners be treated differently? If they commit crimes on our soil, they should be prosecuted and imprisoned here, just like any Ghanaian,” he stressed.

He also sent a direct appeal to Mahama.

“I am calling on former President Mahama to rescind this decision. If he didn’t authorize it, he must come out and publicly reject it.”

Rev. Opuni Frimpong warned that failure to reverse this policy would make the fight against illegal mining even more difficult.

“If this continues, it will discourage the efforts to curb galamsey. Any NDC member who loves this country must advise their leadership on this. We cannot punish Ghanaians and set foreigners free,” he concluded.

Galamsey: IGP reshuffles commanders in hotspots  https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-igp-reshuffles-commanders-in-hotspots/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 09:51:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527376 The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has, with immediate effect, reshuffled commanders stationed in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey-prone areas.

In a statement, the Police noted that the move forms part of efforts to crack down on the menace.

The statement explained that this is the first phase of the reshuffle exercise, with more expected to follow, aimed at injecting fresh energy into the fight against illegal mining activities across the country.

The first phase targets Divisional and District Commanders mainly in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions.

“This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to ensure more effective policing in areas plagued by illegal mining,” the statement noted.

The reshuffle aligns with an earlier directive from the Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who instructed IGP Yohuno to immediately transfer all police commanders stationed in mining areas.

Speaking during an engagement with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, the Asawase MP explained that the move is intended to replace commanders who have been stationed in these areas for an extended period but have failed to effectively tackle the menace.

In a related development, a special four-day continuous intelligence-led anti-galamsey operation, which began on April 17, 2025, within the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region, has led to the arrest of 47 people along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests.

The suspects include 39 Ghanaians, 8 Chinese nationals, and four women.

Akonta Mining denies involvement in galamsey  https://www.adomonline.com/akonta-mining-denies-involvement-in-galamsey/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 09:40:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527368 Akonta Mining Company Limited has denied any involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.

This follows a revelation by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and the subsequent revocation of the company’s license.

The Minister cited “overwhelming evidence” of illegal mining and criminal syndication as the basis for the decision.

However, the company, in a statement, described the Minister’s comments as “reckless and baseless,” calling the move “a clear breach of natural justice and a politically motivated act.”

“The Honourable Minister’s decision to publicly link Akonta Mining to illegal mining activities and to call for the revocation of our mining license is not only unjust and premature, but also a clear case of seeking to hang the dog and give it a bad name,” the statement read.

The company insisted that it holds valid leases and permits from the Minerals Commission and operates legally in Samreboi and Abokoase — not in the Tano Nimri Forest Reserve.

It emphasised that it has never mined in the forest reserve, and that its request for access to the area was denied by both the Minerals Commission and the Forestry Commission in 2022.

Akonta Mining also dismissed claims that it accepted GH¢350,000 from illegal miners, describing the allegations as “entirely false, defamatory, and mischievous,” and challenging anyone with evidence to come forward.

“We vehemently deny any knowledge or association with one Mr. Ayisi, who is falsely alleged to be linked to us,” the statement added.

Highlighting its commitment to environmental responsibility, the company cited ongoing reclamation efforts, including the planting of over 18,000 coconut trees, with plans to plant 32,000 more.

“Although this is estimated to cost the company significantly, we consider it imperative to ensure a responsible mining project that will protect both the community and the environment,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Akonta Mining has pledged its willingness to cooperate with any legitimate investigation while urging the public and authorities to uphold the principles of fairness and justice.

Full text: Lands Minister’s update on gov’t sustained fight against galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/full-text-lands-ministers-update-on-govt-sustained-fight-against-galamsey/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 07:17:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527265 Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press.

As you may recall from our previous engagements, this government, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, remains unwavering in our commitment to eradicate the scourge of illegal mining—an environmental sin against humanity and, against God.

We promised to carry the good people of Ghana along with periodic updates, and today, I am here to provide key developments in this fight.

Last month, we assured the nation that we would intensify efforts to trace the financiers and owners of the heavy-duty equipment used for illegal mining. Today, we are pleased to announce a significant breakthrough in this critical fight.

One of the most egregious cases we have uncovered involves Akonta Mining Company Ltd., a company legally registered and granted a government lease to mine responsibly off-reserve outside the forest.

The company, however, does not possess an entry permit into the forest reserve of the Samreboi enclave of the Western North Region. Yet, investigations reveal that Akonta Mining has flagrantly abused this lease.

In August 2022, the Forestry Commission, with the assistance of the Ghana Police, made some arrests of persons associated with Akonta Mining, encroaching on the forest reserves, specifically compartment 161. The docket was supposedly transferred to Accra for further action, and yet nothing was heard of the case.

This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access of the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH₵300,000 per concession.

Worse, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity. They have encroached compartments 49 and 121 of the Tano Nimri forest reserve.

We gathered a team of investigators to go undercover to make enquiries about the details of this operation. Our undercover team uncovered a well-oiled machinery of destruction:

One Mr. Ayisi (a representative of Akonta Mining) is the liaison on these dealings – he serves as the gatekeeper, negotiating fees and granting illegal access.

The concessions are then subleased to individuals like one “Mr. Henry” and another individual identified as “Shark” who are to oversee the devastation of the Aboi Forest Reserve and the Tano River.

As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators.

Another heartbreaking revelation is that this criminal enterprise thrives because of the active collusion and connivance of some forestry officers and some security personnel.

Here is how it works – Part of the GH₵300,000 fee goes to Akonta Mining, a portion goes to Mr. Henry, Shark, and their cohorts, and another portion goes to the forestry and security officials, according to investigators.

These officers take a cut as a service charge in exchange for protection and tip-offs in the event of an impending raid.

There is no control over the activities of these illegal miners whatsoever. They continue to destroy with impunity, knowing that they are operating under the cover of the lease of Akonta Mining Company Ltd

Some interviews conducted with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (17th April 2025) an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.

The operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 a.m. and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

  • 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)
  • Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base
  • 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, 1 single-barrel gun retrieved
  • Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, 4 motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment

All suspects have been transported to Accra, in custody pending prosecution.

In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect.

I have directed that forestry officials connected to these illegalities be immediately interdicted pending further investigations and prosecution. The security agencies have been notified to investigate security officers who have had dealings with Akonta Mining in this particular Forest Reserve.

The Attorney-General has also since been briefed and has taken over the investigations for further action.

Akonta Mining does not have a lease to mine in the Tano Nimiri Forest reserve, and their mining activities in the forest are illegal and criminal. And that, the Mahama government will stop at nothing to bring the company to book.

This is a warning to all large-scale mining concession holders hiding behind legal leases to fund the destruction of our forests and river bodies. We know some of your schemes – We are coming after you!

To the youth engaged in illegal mining: There is a better way. We stand ready to support you with better alternatives. But to those who persist in defiance, the state will act without mercy!

To the media and the Ghanaian people: Your vigilance is crucial. Report illegal mining activities, and trust that this government will act.

Let me be clear: We will not stop until galamsey is completely uprooted.
We will not stop until our waters run blue, we will not stop until our forests are turned green
We will not stop until the soul of our country is healed!
We will not stop until every financier, every enabler — the real architects of this destruction — will face the full rigors of the law.
We will name, shame, and prosecute them publicly.

Thank you. I will now take your questions.

Galamsey: 21 more arrested in Samreboi Forest raid as operation enters day 4 https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-21-more-arrested-in-samreboi-forest-raid-as-operation-enters-day-4/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 15:39:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527215 The ongoing joint police and security operation targeting illegal mining activities in forest reserves near Samreboi in the Western Region has led to the arrest of 21 more individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to 47 as the crackdown enters its fourth day.

The latest arrests include a mix of local and foreign nationals: 39 Ghanaians, eight Chinese nationals, and four Ghanaian women. Authorities say the suspects were caught engaging in illegal mining activities along the Tano River and within adjoining forest reserves that have come under increasing threat from galamsey operations.

The operation, which has intensified in recent days, has also led to the seizure of 17 excavators and one bulldozer suspected of having been used in the destruction of the environment. Security officials confirmed the confiscation of several firearms and rounds of ammunition from the illegal miners.

The first batch of 26 arrested suspects has already been transported to Accra to face prosecution.

Security personnel remain deployed across the affected areas as the raid continues with the aim of flushing out remaining illegal miners and dismantling galamsey infrastructure.

10 more arrested for galamsey in Tano Nimiri forest https://www.adomonline.com/10-more-arrested-for-galamsey-in-tano-nimiri-forest/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 10:52:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527055 The Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve and along the Tano River in the Western Region, arresting ten more individuals suspected of engaging in galamsey.

The intelligence-led operation, conducted on Thursday, April 18, also resulted in the seizure of 11 excavators and a bulldozer at the site, located along the banks of the Tano River.

The machinery has since been transported across the river and placed in secure police custody.

This latest operation follows a similar raid on Wednesday, April 17, during which police apprehended 26 suspects — including 18 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals — in the Subri Forest and along the Tano River.

These back-to-back operations highlight the growing urgency to combat illegal mining, which continues to pose a serious threat to Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and ecosystems.

The police’s decisive actions represent a commendable contribution to the broader national effort to restore and safeguard the environment, which remains under increasing pressure from galamsey-related activities.

We’ll patrol relentlessly to stop rebuilding of galamsey camp – FC’s W/Regional Manager https://www.adomonline.com/well-patrol-relentlessly-to-stop-rebuilding-of-galamsey-camp-fcs-w-regional-manager/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 15:07:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526825 The Western Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Poku Bosompim, has vowed that illegal miners will not be allowed to return to slums that were recently destroyed during a coordinated operation.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ Newsfile on Saturday after the successful demolition of notorious illegal mining slums, including Abrewa Ne Nkran, Jerusalem, and another camp near Wassa Nkran, Mr Bosompim said the Forestry Commission, with the backing of the military, is rolling out a strict surveillance and patrol strategy to ensure the camps are never rebuilt.

He emphasised that this was not the first time such slums had been destroyed.

“There have been at least three raids in the past, and each time they regrouped and came back—this time, more determined. After we cleared the area, we even discovered that some had already begun laying concrete foundations instead of the usual wooden structures.”

To prevent the return of illegal miners, the Forestry Commission is implementing a new strategy anchored on sustained ground patrols, military collaboration, and real-time surveillance.

“So the strategy now is to be able to patrol the area frequently and then make sure that the camp is never rebuilt.”

The operation at Abrewa Ne Nkran, which took place under the cover of darkness at around 3:00 am, involved officers from the Ghana Armed Forces’ Southern Command, who provided security and tactical support.

According to Mr. Bosompim, the mission was based on intelligence suggesting that the camps were not only densely populated but also controlled by armed gangs who resisted previous eviction efforts.

“Our initial estimate was around 1,500 to 2,000 occupants, but when we launched drone surveillance mid-operation, we saw thousands, far beyond what we had anticipated. It was a whole city hiding in plain sight, tucked right on the edge of our protected forest.”

Illegal slums serving galamsey operators razed down – Western Region Forestry Boss https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-slums-serving-galamsey-operators-razed-down-western-region-forestry-boss/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 14:56:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526821 The Western Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Poku Bosompim, has confirmed the successful demolition of major illegal slums that served as safe havens for illegal mining activities in the region.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, April 19, Mr. Bosompim stated that the slums, including Abrewa Ne Nkran, Jerusalem, and another near Wassa Nkran, were completely destroyed during a coordinated raid.

Mr. Bosompim, who has been in the role for just two months, noted that his predecessor had already flagged the area as a major threat.

Despite previous raids—three in total—the slum residents always managed to regroup. Determined to put a stop to it, the new Regional Manager made it his top priority.

“My priority after taking over as the regional manager was to make sure that the slums were removed so that we could save that portion of the forest. So, quickly, we put a team together. We had the support of the General Officer Commanding Southern Command, who released officers to support the forestry officers. And as you heard from the operation last week Monday, we were able to raid the camp and completely eradicate those slums—not just the one at Abrewa Ne Nkran, but also the second, bigger one called Jerusalem, and the third one around the Wassa Nkran area.

“So, as of today, I can tell you those illegal slums that served as a haven for illegal miners have been razed down. They are all lying in desolate ruins,” he said.

He disclosed that the slum had become a magnet not just for Ghanaian illegal miners but also for nationals from about eight different West African countries.

Despite the raid, Mr. Bosompim warned that the threat of reoccupation remains. “Just a day after razing the area, we noticed attempts to rebuild. This time, they were laying foundations and using cement blocks, not wood. It shows they are determined to return,” he said.

To prevent the resurgence of these illegal settlements, the Forestry Commission has introduced a new strategy involving regular patrols and tighter surveillance, noting, “We’re not going to let this happen again. The goal is to ensure that these camps are never rebuilt.”

‘Our galamsey fight is nothing but staged drama until the kingpins are dealt with’ – Prof Boadi https://www.adomonline.com/our-galamsey-fight-is-nothing-but-staged-drama-until-the-kingpins-are-dealt-with-prof-boadi/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 17:16:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526660 The recent arrest of 26 illegal miners near Samreboi in the Western Region has reignited discussions on Ghana’s ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, April 18, the Dean of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Isaac Boadi, expressed doubt about the effectiveness of current anti-galamsey measures.

“I must be honest, Ghana’s environment is collapsing, and until the powerful — the kingpins — face prosecution and consequences, this ‘fight’ is nothing but a staged drama,” he stated.

Prof. Boadi’s comments followed a report detailing a significant police operation that led to the arrest of 26 individuals engaged in illegal mining activities in a forest reserve near Samreboi.

This operation forms part of a broader initiative by the Ghana Police Service to curb illegal mining, which has been linked to widespread environmental degradation, including deforestation and water pollution.

Prof. Boadi emphasised the need for a more comprehensive strategy — one that goes beyond arresting small-scale operators and targets the masterminds and beneficiaries behind these operations.

He warned that without addressing the involvement of powerful figures, efforts to end galamsey would remain ineffective.

Abuakwa South MP raises alarm over galamsey-linked water crisis https://www.adomonline.com/abuakwa-south-mp-raises-alarm-over-galamsey-linked-water-crisis/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 10:30:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526551 Abuakwa South MP Dr. Kingsley Agyemang has expressed deep concern over a worsening water crisis in his constituency, blaming the situation on the impact of illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

The Eastern Region, where the constituency is located, has seen the pollution and depletion of many of its once-reliable water sources due to unregulated mining operations.

Speaking in a recent interview, Dr. Agyemang highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that several communities are struggling to access clean water for both domestic and commercial use. He singled out Asiakwa as the hardest-hit community.

“The situation in Asiakwa is dire. There is no water in the area, and residents now rely entirely on sachet water,” he said.

“My father, who is the chief farmer there, depends on sachet water every week just to mix medicine for spraying his farm. That shows how serious things have become.”

Dr. Agyemang revealed that rivers such as Supon and Afrancho, which once served as crucial water sources, have either dried up or become severely polluted.

He stressed that the consequences are especially alarming for Asiakwa, which serves as the municipality’s largest market hub.

“Even animals can’t find water to drink. This is not a political issue—it’s not about the NPP or NDC. We are all to blame,” he emphasised.

“Just last month, I facilitated the drilling of a mechanised borehole in the area. Children now have to walk long distances just to fetch water from it.”

Despite the grim circumstances, Dr. Agyemang reaffirmed his commitment to finding long-term solutions. He underscored the need to act within the confines of the law and urged residents to take an active role in safeguarding local natural resources.

“We will do our best to resolve the water crisis. This issue cannot be ignored. But the people of Asiakwa must also understand that no one is above the law,” he added.

Dr. Agyemang concluded by assuring the community of ongoing efforts to identify and develop more sustainable water sources, including additional mechanised boreholes, to help ease the strain caused by galamsey activities.

Galamsey could be aiding Bawku conflict — Forestry Commission boss [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-could-be-aiding-bawku-conflict-forestry-commission-boss-audio/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 13:49:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526033 The Western Regional Director of the Forestry Commission, Nana Kwabena Bosompim, has raised concerns that proceeds from illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, could be fueling conflicts in parts of Ghana, particularly in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem following a raid and demolition exercise at an illegal mining settlement in the Subri Forest Reserve, Nana Bosompim disclosed that some of the individuals arrested identified themselves as natives of Bawku and other northern communities.

According to him, many of these young men confessed that the money they earn from galamsey is sent back home to support their families — some of whom are caught in the middle of the ongoing Bawku conflict.

“We came across people from the Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Regions. Many of them are from areas such as Bawku and Bolgatanga. They said they came to work so they can repackage the money and support their families in the conflict,” he revealed.

The Director further suggested that the situation bears signs of a militia-style network, with some of the miners allegedly working under duress.

“Some individuals told us that if they fail to send the monies, their families back home would be attacked. So this paints the picture that the galamsey menace could be aiding the Bawku conflict and possibly other conflicts in Ghana,” he added.

His remarks come amid renewed violence in Bawku, where the conflict has claimed several lives and left others injured. The Ghana Police Service has recently raised alarms over rising attacks on security personnel and their families in the area.

In response to the worsening security situation, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has placed a ban on the movement of officers and their relatives into Bawku.

Officers already stationed there have also been ordered to wear full protective gear and move only under armoured escort.

I feel tempted to laugh at how the NDC is struggling to fight galamsey – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/i-feel-tempted-to-laugh-at-how-the-ndc-is-struggling-to-fight-galamsey-miracles-aboagye/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 12:09:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525547

The Communications Director of the 2024 Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed frustration over how the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is handling the issue of illegal mining in the country.

Aboagye said he is sometimes tempted to mock the NDC’s approach to addressing illegal mining, recalling how, while in opposition, the party dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) warnings on the issue.

“Sometimes when I wake up and I see galamsey issues and the way this government is struggling with it, I feel like let us just laugh at them because we told them and they knew what we were saying was right,” Aboagye said.

He explained that before the 2024 elections, the NDC made promises that raised false hopes among illegal miners, despite being cautioned against such promises.

He claimed that prominent NDC figures, including former President John Mahama, promised to allow illegal mining to continue under the pretext of creating jobs.

“We told them that it is wrong for them to go and stand on a campaign trail as a presidential candidate and tell the people that ‘I don’t see the reason why the NPP would come and arrest them, people in the pit and that when I come to the office I will release you all the galamseyers,'” Aboagye said, referring to Mahama’s 2024 campaign remarks.

Aboagye also criticized the politicization of the galamsey issue, claiming the NDC is not doing enough to address the problem. He argued that the practice would not be eradicated unless it is depoliticized.

“Until we depoliticise galamsey, no matter the structures put in place, it will not work,” he emphasized.

Galamsey: 8 arrested in Eastern region, equipment seized https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-8-arrested-in-eastern-region-equipment-seized/ Sat, 12 Apr 2025 16:17:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524648 The taskforce set up by the Eastern Regional Security Council to clamp down on illegal mining has apprehended eight illegal miners and impounded dozens of mining equipment in the Denkyembuor, Atiwa West, Fanteakwa and Ayensuano districts.

The operation was carried out on Friday by the taskforce made up of joint police/ military officers from the Eastern regional police command and the Southern Command respectively.

The items confiscated include 24 excavator batteries, 16 pumping machines, a chainsaw,
3 monitors, 5 control boards, 3 single-barrelled guns, 2 pump-action rifles, cartridges and cash amounting to GHȼ3,000.

Addressing the media after what she describes as a successful exercise, the regional minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, emphasised President John Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining.

“For the past days, we have been combing the Eastern region with our military and police to make sure the mandate by the president is obeyed.”

“If you go around, our waters are so bad, the environment is destroyed, pits are uncovered, our forest is being destroyed. It is a hazard to our nation and the region, so for the few days our men have been on the ground and here you are with several excavators that have been seized from them,” she observed.

According to her, it is a result of the government’s decision to ensure that there is access to clean raw water for the Ghana Water Company Limited to supply for domestic use.

“For the past days, we’ve been to our service providers especially water works because we don’t have clean water and it’s become a problem for us in our communities.”

We are telling the people that the men are on the ground, they’re not leaving anytime soon until we stop the illegal mining and the environment is cleared,” she assured.

She further assured the public that none of the seized equipment would be released to their owners, stating that the suspects would be put before the law courts.

“They’re not disappearing because it is the excavators that are used to destroy the environment and anytime we leave it for the people, they are going back into the forest, we’re keeping it until the president directs us on what we should do with it.”

“We’re leaving them to the laws to take its own course, so whatever the law says about what they’ve done, we leave it to them,” she explained.

Unlike previous governments that resorted to the burning of excavators as a solution to illegal mining, the regional minister said “We have said that our government will not burn any excavator but if the orders come that we should use it to work in the region, we can use it.”

The suspects are currently in the custody of the Central North Police Command’s Anti-Galamsey Taskforce.

They have been identified as Duut Kwabena Sakakba, 38, Douglas Nyamekye, 36, Ma Jian, 37 (Chinese), Ma Young, 31 (Chinese), and Ma Haibi, 54 (Chinese).

Reports indicate that their illegal mining activities have caused severe pollution of the river, which serves as a crucial water source for the surrounding communities.

The suspects are awaiting court proceedings, as confirmed by a statement from the Central North Regional Police Command. During the operation, two excavators with chassis numbers SY 6HK1-XABEA-01-C3 and SWE365E00762 were seized.

The operators of these excavators fled the scene upon seeing the police task force, taking the ignition keys with them.

Additionally, a Toyota Hilux with registration number GE-2743-13 was impounded at the site.

The police are working to transport the excavators to a secure location and are tracking the owners of the equipment to make further arrests.

Galamsey: It’s populist; rescind before Ghana is destroyed – Prof. Aning on transfer of police commanders https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-its-populist-rescind-before-ghana-is-destroyed-prof-aning-on-transfer-of-police-commanders/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 07:36:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523218 Security expert Professor Kwasi Aning has criticised the directive to transfer all police commanders stationed in mining communities, warning that the policy—particularly its handling of foreign nationals involved in galamsey—could ultimately destroy the country.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, he described the Interior Minister’s decision as “populist,” “unthoughtful,” and “a disgrace,” arguing that it fails to address the root causes of illegal mining and sends a dangerous message to transnational criminal elements.

“I have absolutely no sympathy,” he said.
“I detest being an independent Ghanaian in Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana and being treated like a second-class citizen. And let me appeal to the President directly; Mr. President, rescind this policy before this country is destroyed.”

The policy, announced by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, directs the Inspector General of Police to immediately transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders who have served long terms in mining areas without making significant progress in the fight against illegal mining.

In a further controversial move, the Minister stated that foreign nationals caught engaging in galamsey would be deported without prosecution.

Prof. Aning condemned the deportation policy as ineffective and damaging to Ghana’s sovereignty and justice system.

“This is a policy that will serve as an attraction for even worse criminals to come,” he warned.
“They know we don’t have the capacity to prosecute them. They know we don’t have the political will to do what is right for the people of this country.”

He challenged the President to make his final term count, stating that the current approach falls short of the promises made in the State of the Nation Address.

“This is your legacy term—let it matter and let it count,” he implored.
“Your minister has demonstrated an unwillingness and a reluctance to hold the bull by the horns and resolve this crisis.”

While he acknowledged that changes in police deployment could be useful, Prof. Aning said they must be accompanied by proper accountability and resources to be effective.

“I think it’s useful that we give the police officers performance indicators,” he noted.
“But we need to give them the resources, Your Excellency, so that the three months can be tested and their results checked.”

He criticised what he sees as the broader implications of the policy.

“We cannot have a two-tier law. We cannot have a two-tier implementation process. The manner in which this has been presented to the Republic of Ghana is shameful. It is not thought through. It is populist, and it is a disgrace.”

Prof. Aning concluded with a passionate appeal to President Mahama to uphold his environmental and governance commitments.

“Let this be your legacy term by reclaiming the environment, as you promised the people of Ghana in your State of the Nation Address. We cannot afford more half-measures.”

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deporting all foreign nationals engaged in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Addressing members of the Ghanaian community in Lagos, Nigeria, the Minister underscored President John Mahama’s stance on safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.

He revealed that a military operation targeting illegal mining activities will be launched in the coming days.

“In the next few days, people will be rounded up and prosecuted,” he said.

Ablakwa also disclosed that several deportations have already taken place, although these actions have not received much publicity.

The Chinese suspects were arrested along the Bonsa River as part of an ongoing operation by the Western Central Regional Police Command aimed at clamping down on illegal mining. They are currently in the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and potential repatriation.

Meanwhile, seven Ghanaians—including Ibrahim Dauda, Michael Tettey Komlorm, Douglas Ayambila, Elvis Aborta, Nsoh Oto (alias Agorogo), Kwadwo George (alias Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (alias Atta)—have been arraigned before the Special Court for Illegal Mining at Sekondi.

They face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and conducting mining operations without a valid license. The court has remanded them into custody, with a scheduled hearing for April 17, 2025.

Additionally, four other suspects are expected to appear before the court for similar offenses.

The operation is part of a larger initiative by the police to curb the environmental destruction caused by illegal and unregulated mining practices.
