Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, says the late President John Evans Atta Mills would have been outraged by the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture in Accra, Mrs Osei described Prof Mills as a man of peace, humility, and unwavering patriotism, committed to safeguarding Ghana’s future.

“I have wondered many times, would Prof be happy with us, with me, with the current state of Ghana? I think Prof would be outraged at how we are committing galamsey to damage our environment, our water bodies and our future,” she said.

“Prof would be sad at the level of lies and vitriol we hurl at each other daily in the media, especially online,” she added.

She, however, noted that Prof Mills would have been pleased with Ghana’s prevailing peace, the election of the first female Vice President, and the growing involvement of the youth in leadership.

Mrs Osei also recalled personal experiences that reflected his modesty, selflessness, and openness to criticism. According to her, Prof Mills remained focused on national prosperity and was quick to admit fault when necessary.

“His administration’s education policies reflected his belief that education should be both accessible and good. He worked to expand access to education, particularly for girls and children from disadvantaged backgrounds, while insisting on maintaining and improving quality,” she noted.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who was also present at the event, described Prof Mills as “one of Africa’s greats” and urged current leaders to emulate his values of humility, excellence, and service.

The lecture was organised by the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, a non-partisan organisation committed to preserving the legacy of the late President.

Chairperson of the Heritage, Alex Segbefia, announced that the 13th anniversary celebrations would include a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park on July 24 and a memorial hockey tournament at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.

Galamsey menace: Minority calls for public inquiry, halt to community mining https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-menace-minority-calls-for-public-inquiry-halt-to-community-mining/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 07:17:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2259636

The Minority in Parliament is calling for a public inquiry into the activities, reports and fallouts of the erstwhile Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

In addition, the Caucus aww nois calling for an inquiry into the arrest of former Environment Minister and IMCIM Chairman, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

To the Minority, the arrest of the former Minister was misplaced, since the state ought to have seen him as a whistleblower and not humiliate him the manner it’s doing.

The Ranking Member on the Lands and Forestry Committee, Rashid Pelpuo, made the call at a press briefing in parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Pelpuo said the fallouts and reports show that government appointees and the government itself were deeply involved in the wanton distraction of the Ghanaian forest.

Aside from the inquiry, the Minority is asking for a review of a number of mining regulations that will bar individuals and companies from mining in forest reserves and forest covers.

The Caucus, forthwith is asking government to halt the activities of the community mining which it sees as an activity that transforms into galamsey.
