The group clashed with the police during the protest with 13 of its members arrested in a standoff between police and the protesters which lasted for several minutes. Police deployed water cannons and tasers to drive the charged crowd away.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, the Information Minister said “the confusion is an embarrassing spectacle and generally, it is totally unacceptable that an otherwise peaceful demonstration by people who want access to legal education will end up in the scenes that we saw on television and social media.”

To Mr Nkrumah, the police should have exercised restraint in dealing with the protesters and the situation that broke out.

“The government also believes that the police must always abide by their clarion call which is to protect and serve. We are of the view that the handling of such a situation must always be done in a manner that allows a balanced achievement of the objectives,” he said.

Man returns missing wallet to owner 17 months after with money intact https://www.adomonline.com/man-returns-missing-wallet-to-owner-17-months-after-with-money-intact/ Thu, 18 Jul 2019 12:20:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1685581 “Good people exist.” This could possibly be the best phrase to describe an incredible experience a Twitter user shared on his timeline after he found a wallet 17 months after he lost it under a bizarre circumstance.

According to Gideon Kwame Nyamekye, who uses the handle @kwame_kay, he lost his wallet a year ago and as fate would have it, he retrieved it through a good Samaritan on Tuesday in a very interesting way that left him and other social media users gobsmacked.

After losing his wallet, a good Samaritan by name Walid Abi-Karim found the wallet and has on numerous occasions been trying to reach out to the owner on Facebook.

Mr Nyamekye’s inactivity on Facebook delayed the early retrieval of his wallet.

He had GH¢80., and his ID cards still intact when the wallet was returned to him.

“The strangest thing happened [on Tuesday]. I lost my wallet over a year ago and [on Tuesday]…as I tried to board a troski at Lapaz, a gentleman just tapped me on the shoulder and told me he had my wallet. [The] Guy went on to describe it and it’s contents. I was just shocked.

“The guy recognised me from my Facebook profile picture. Apparently, he’s been messaging me since February 2018 but I haven’t opened Facebook in forever. My 80 cedis was still in the wallet,” Mr Nyamekye posted on Twitter.

In an interview with him, he explained that he was extremely delighted to have found his wallet again, especially under such a rare circumstance.

He was also grateful to the young man who found his wallet.

“I was ecstatic. Initially, I was just shocked at how it all played out, I mean…having a complete stranger call out your full name isn’t very usual. But, I was just very happy, surprised and grateful to see my wallet again,” he said.

Mr Nyamekye also described Mr Abi-Karam as an “awesome human being.”

In an interview with citinewsroom.com, the good Samaritan, Mr Abi-Karam, who found the wallet, disclosed that he returned the wallet because he wanted the world to know that honest people still exist.

“I just wanted the world to know that honest people are still around us. The wallet has been with me for 17 months. The first day I found the wallet, I opened and went through hoping to find his mobile number and call but I didn’t see his number, but I saw his ID cards and I realised he was a student of the University of Ghana.

“So I checked his full name on his ID and I was convinced everybody likes Facebook and I searched him on Facebook hoping to find him. I sent him a message on Facebook but no response, I saw his sister on Facebook too and I sent her a message too, but there was no response…but someway somehow, I was convinced I will join the same car with him and I will give him his wallet just as he lost it.”

He called on the public to always ensure they return missing items to their owners or ensure they report to the police for the necessary action to be taken.

“This is to set an example. The best thing to do is to return missing but found items. If you don’t find an ID, it is best you return it to the police,” he added.

Minority demands list of judgement debt beneficiaries under Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/minority-demands-list-of-judgement-debt-beneficiaries-under-akufo-addo/ Sat, 13 Jul 2019 10:05:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1684054 The Minority in Parliament is demanding details of all monies paid in default judgement since the Akufo-Addo administration in 2017.

Minority Spokesperson Finance, Casiel Ato Forson, wants the Finance Ministry to publish the list of individuals and organisations who benefited from the payment of approximately ₵282million as announced to Parliament by Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, Friday.

According to Mr. Ofori Atta, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration inherited a total of ₵482,413,354.13 million from its predecessor, National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP he said, also accrued ₵197,076,438.15 over the last two years “bringing the total amount to ₵679,489,792.28”.

“In total, we have had no choice but to pay 42% of the outstanding, which is approximately 94 million yearly, due to the garnisheeing of our accounts and the renegotiations held,” Mr. Ofori Atta added.

This was in response to a question by MP for Mion, Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, who asked the Finance Minister how much the government had paid in judgement debt from January 2017 to date.

Mr. Ofori Atta further explained that, the government’s approach to renegotiating most of these default judgements, yielded in the state saving in excess of ₵200 million.

“For example, on one instance we managed to save the taxpayer ₵90million through ngotiations. In another instance, we negotiated a savings of ₵130million on a claim of over ₵180million,” he revealed.

The debts were incurred following court orders for breaches of contracts, largely compensations for personal injury claims and acquisitions, which cannot be ignored.

Judgement debt paid to Martin Amidu?

However, the Minority has described the Minister’s response as dissatisfying. Members of the opposition NDC say the responses lacked detailed information to enable them to discuss the issue from informed positions.

Spokesperson on Finance, Ato Forson who is also the MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency in the Central Region, demanded to know if the beneficiaries included corporate organisations such as Bankswitch, McDan Ltd as well as former Attorney-General, Martin Amidu, who is now the Special Prosecutor.

Akufo-Addo and Martin Amidu

Mr. Amidu -who single-handedly led the crusade against the state paying ₵51million to businessman Alfred Woyome in default judgement- had sued for damages and costs, over his “unlawful dismissal” from late President John Atta Mills’ government in 2012.

In the case of Bankswitch Ghana Limited which Mr. Forson alleged, was paid ₵80m as judgement debt, had already been paid a sum ₵286million prior to the NDC exiting office, after the company won a case against the state.

That amount represents the exact amount due the company in default judgement, the former Deputy Finance Minister told Evans Mensah, on Top Story on Joy FM, Friday.

Our client has not made U-turn – ModernGhana journalist’s lawyer insists https://www.adomonline.com/our-client-has-not-made-u-turn-modernghana-journalists-lawyer-insists/ Sat, 06 Jul 2019 10:11:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1681700 The Modern Ghana journalist who was arrested and detained by the National Security Council early this week insists he was never tortured by the operatives there.

Lawyer for Emmanuel Britwum, Debora Asabere-Ameyaw in a statement said claims by a private legal practitioner that her client was tortured have all been denied by the journalist.

“Mr Emmanuel Britwum hereby denies categorically each and every allegation levelled against him in a purported statement by A-Partners@Law (Mr Anyenini’s law firm).

“It is his case that he has never engaged any law firm or any individual from that firm. He has never made any statement to the effect that he was tortured for which reason same was to be circulated in the media,” the statement signed by his said.

This is a second denial from Emmanuel Britwum has denied the alleged torture.

The first time Britwum speaking through his lawyers said he was “neither tortured nor brutalised” during his detention at an undisclosed location.

The denial came after private legal practitioner Samson Lady Anyenini – who was part of a legal team put together by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after the two were arrested – said the journalist had corroborated his editor Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri’s account of events while they were in detention.

According to Mr Anyenini, “I asked him more than five times,” the lawyer recalled his interaction with his now former client. Mr Lardy said he gave this testimony in the presence of lawyers, journalists and friends.

“I am learning for the first time that he has gone to get another lawyer…. It is strange that some lawyer has surfaced and claimed he was not tortured,” Mr Anyenini said on Joy FM’s Newsnight, Wednesday.

In his second denial, again through his lawyer, Britwum denies ever confirming the allegations levelled by his editor while speaking to Mr Anyenini.

The lawyer said her client, as a trained journalist, is fully aware of the ethics of his profession and would not take advantage of situations to embarrass state institutions “as he is not an opportunist.”

The statement added “he maintains his innocence of the charges preferred against him.”

Below is a copy of the full statement:

Despite Britwum’s denial, in the audio below from an interview he granted on Accra based Kingdom FM after his release, the journalist confirmed the assault. He spoke in the local dialect, Twi.

The two companies are combining their expertise for the development and construction of the first-of-its-kind Spaceship Research Centre in Ghana.

The agreement comes after the completion of the feasibility studies and preliminary architectural and engineering designs, and presentation to both the Client and foreign Investors.

The KESHE Spaceship Research Centre construction will start at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission in Accra.

KESHE Foundation International would invest a total of $21 million on the project, which would consist of an Administration block, Healthcare facility (Clinic), Factory, Research Centre and the first African Flight launch pad.

With the building and opening of this new centre within the next 12 months, in line with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s one-district-one-factory agenda, the Foundation would bring new cutting-edge technologies to Ghana and make Ghana one of the leading nations in the world of Science and Spaceship while providing decent sustainable job opportunities to both ordinary citizens and high-earned skilled world-class Technologists and Scientists.

In October 2016, following the conference organised by the Keshe Foundation International, in collaboration with Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and subsequent meetings, led to formation of Keshe Foundation Ghana, a Ghanaian registered company jointly owned by the two organizations.
