Also present were high-ranking officials of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) who also came to sympathise with the family of their late minister.

Dr Omane Boamah, along with seven others, died in the recent helicopter crash at Adansi Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Nketiah was accompanied by a delegation of senior NDC members, including former Director-General of the National Service Secretariat, Mr Vincent Kuagbenu.

Mr Godwin Ako Gunn, Mrs Faustina Nelson, and Alexander Percival Segbefia were other NDC members spotted at the event.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The others who perished were Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Environment Minister; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.

The military crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also lost their lives in the crash.

The group was en route to an event in Obuasi aimed at combating the menace of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

The national tragedy has brought an outpouring of grief from across the country, with many leaders and citizens paying tribute to the public servants who lost their lives.

The delegation’s visit underscores the party’s and the military’s solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult time.

GAF probes assault on JoyNews journalist https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-probes-assault-on-joynews-journalist/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 07:06:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561695 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun investigations into an alleged assault by some of its personnel on a JoyNews journalist, Carlos Calony, and an eyewitness near a demolition site on the Spintex Road in Accra.

According to GAF, the probe seeks to establish the facts behind what it described as “inappropriate conduct” on Wednesday, July 30.

This was contained in a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at GAF Headquarters, Burma Camp.

The release, signed by Captain V. A. Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations, assured that the process would be thorough, adding that “those found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”

Mr. Calony was detained by National Security operatives while covering the aftermath of the demolition of a warehouse belonging to businessman Daniel McCkorley under construction.

The reasons for Mr. Calony’s detention remain unclear, sparking criticism from press freedom advocates and civil society groups who have demanded accountability.

In a related development, the government has condemned the actions of the soldiers and security personnel, describing them as “utterly unacceptable.”

The President has instructed both the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to ensure a full investigation is conducted and that disciplinary and punitive measures are applied without delay.

The new operational approach will see intensified military actions in Bawku, Binduri, Nabdam, and Zebilla. The Armed Forces say the enforcement measures may include curfews, movement restrictions, and all lawful actions needed to protect lives and property.

“We remain fully committed and in readiness to execute our constitutional mandate to ensure that the country is peaceful and its citizens are safe,” the GAF stated.

Residents have been urged to fully cooperate with security personnel and avoid interfering with ongoing operations.

An ode to now (Rtd) Brigadier-General Aggrey Quashie: A legacy of service and PR excellence https://www.adomonline.com/an-ode-to-now-rtd-brigadier-general-aggrey-quashie-a-legacy-of-service-and-pr-excellence/ Fri, 02 May 2025 11:52:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531006 After 31 years of distinguished service, Brigadier-General Quashie officially retired from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking the end of a remarkable career that has been characterized by both military prowess and unparalleled professionalism in communication.

He leaves behind not just a legacy of military achievements but a profound impact on the way the Armed Forces interact with the public.

It’s with great admiration and deep respect that I reflect on the retirement of Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, a man whose service to the GAF and his exemplary leadership in the military’s public relations department will forever be remembered.

A legacy of service to Ghana

Brigadier-General Quashie’s journey with the Ghana Armed Forces began three decades ago.

Throughout his illustrious career, he served in various capacities and earned the respect of his peers, subordinates, and the public alike.

His strength as a military officer was undeniable, but it was his role as a communicator and leader of the GAF Public Relations (PR) Directorate that truly set him apart.

For 10 years, he led the PR outfit with distinction, transforming how the Armed Forces communicated with the public.

His tenure as the head of the directorate marked a turning point for the GAF, moving from a military institution primarily concerned with internal affairs to a more transparent and outward-facing entity that bridged the gap between the military and the Ghanaian people.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Brigadier-General Quashie was the face of the GAF’s communication efforts, shaping the narrative and ensuring that the public was informed, engaged, and connected to the work of the Armed Forces.

Suffice it to say that he took some verbal bullets while doing this, but as the gallant soldier that he was, he took them in his stride and soldiered on.

A master of Public Relations: Bringing GAF closer to the people

What stands out most about Brigadier-General Quashie is his ability to blend his military discipline with a keen understanding of public relations.

He was more than just an officer – he was a consummate PR professional who understood the delicate balance of promoting the image of the military while maintaining its necessary confidentiality.

His ability to handle crises with grace, communicate effectively in times of conflict, and foster positive public relations with the media was second to none.

I had the privilege of working closely with him over the years, and I can say with certainty that Brigadier-General Quashie was a rare combination of military authority and PR acumen.

His proactive approach to communication was truly groundbreaking. He didn’t wait for the media to approach the GAF with questions or concerns – he went to them.

His strategy was simple but effective: stay ahead of the story, address issues before they became problems, and always maintain an open line of communication with the public.

Under his leadership, the GAF became more transparent, more approachable, and more respected than ever before.

He understood that in today’s world, the military must not only be capable in defense matters but also trustworthy and relatable in its dealings with the public.

His work fostered a sense of trust between the GAF and the Ghanaian people, reminding us all that the military is not a distant entity but a part of the community, there to protect and serve.

A man of character and integrity

Beyond his professional achievements, Brigadier-General Quashie is someone who commands respect simply by the way he carries himself.

As a leader, he exuded integrity, humility, and a sense of duty that inspired all who worked with him. He was approachable, understanding, and genuinely invested in the well-being of his colleagues and the soldiers under his command.

His leadership style was a fine balance of strength and kindness, earning him the admiration of both the senior leadership and the troops.

In every interaction, he showed the true meaning of service. His ability to listen, his commitment to the mission, and his unshakable sense of responsibility made him a role model for many, both in and out of the military.

Brigadier-General Quashie will be remembered not only for the milestones he achieved in his career but for the way he made people feel valued and heard.

A well-deserved retirement

As Brigadier-General Quashie embarks on his well-deserved retirement, it is impossible to ignore the mark he has left on the Ghana Armed Forces and the broader community.

While the military will no longer be guided by his steady hand in the PR Directorate, the lessons he instilled – of transparency, trust, and effective communication – will continue to shape the GAF for years to come.

Personally, I will always remember Brigadier-General Quashie not just for his professional excellence but for the warmth and humility he brought to everything he did.

He showed us all that leadership is not about position or title but about the impact you have on others.

His retirement marks the end of an era for the Ghana Armed Forces, but his legacy will endure.

Thank you, Brigadier-General Eric Aggrey Quashie, for your 31 years of service, for your extraordinary work in public relations, and for the positive impact you’ve made on the Ghana Armed Forces and the country at large.

Your legacy will live on, and you will always be respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing you.

In honouring him today, we celebrate not just the military officer, but the man – a true patriot who gave his all for Ghana.

Wishing Brigadier-General Quashie a fulfilling retirement filled with peace, joy, and continued service to his community.

He explained that these standards are in place to ensure the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of recruits and to maintain the Armed Forces’ high operational standards.

GAF will not relent in its quest to counter external threats – GOC Southern Command https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-will-not-relent-in-its-quest-to-counter-external-threats-goc-southern-command/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 05:56:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2468473 Brigadier-General Samuel Yeboah Asare, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Southern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), has reaffirmed the GAF’s commitment to addressing external threats to national security.

Speaking at a Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration Exercise, he emphasized the importance of enhancing the skills and preparedness of ground troops to effectively respond to uncertainties both within and outside the country.

The exercise aimed to showcase the capabilities of the armed forces and reassure the public of their commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s sovereignty.

Brig-Gen Asare highlighted that ongoing training and readiness are vital components of GAF’s strategy to counter any potential aggression, ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

“It is common knowledge that the protection of the territorial integrity of the country against external aggression is a constitutional mandate of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“The forces also have a secondary role of maintaining internal and external security, support civil authority in this country. The Ghana Army is the lead service in these operations to fulfil this constitutional mandate”, he said

The Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration Exercise took place at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS) in the Battle Training Camp, Bundasi, near Accra.

The event was part of the training for Senior Course 46 students of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC).

The exercise showcased the GAF’s military capabilities in a mock battle scenario. It was attended by 98 senior officer students from the GAF, along with 16 allied officers from other African nations.

Brig-Gen Asare highlighted the significance of the exercise in demonstrating the GAF’s readiness to defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

The exercise illustrated the effective use of fire assets and tactical formations, reinforcing the GAF’s commitment to addressing external threats and ensuring national security.

“The objective of the exercise is to enable the students to appreciate the utilisation of assets of a battle group which formed part of a joint task force to lead an operational framework, the Ghana army’s concept of operations and capabilities, the nature of Land environment and expose them to the military equipment of a battle group”, he explained.

This year’s exercise was particularly elaborate, highlighting the diverse capabilities of the GAF.

The event highlighted the combined efforts of various infantry battalions and supporting units, along with air and naval assistance, to illustrate the armed forces’ readiness to counter aggression and ensure internal security within designated areas.

Troops from the One Battalion of Infantry (1BN), Two Battalion of Infantry (2BN), 64 Battalion of Infantry (64BN), and 66 Artillery Regiment participated actively, alongside the 15 Armoured Brigade and the 48 Engineers Regiment.

The exercise also featured contributions from the Army Special Operations Brigade, with vital air and naval support provided by the Ghana Air Force and Navy, reinforcing the GAF’s commitment to maintaining national security.

Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Bekoe, the Chief of Air Staff, emphasized the importance of the exercise in enhancing the readiness of troops to effectively counter aggressors and neutralize potential threats.

He stressed that such exercises were crucial for positioning the military to defend the nation against adversaries who may seek to undermine its stability.

Air Vice Marshal Bekoe urged the troops to maintain professionalism and vigilance, particularly as the country approaches national elections.

He noted the role of the military in safeguarding Ghana’s over three-decade-old democracy, reinforcing the commitment to protect the nation’s democratic processes during this critical period.

“I urged you to bring our professionalism to bear as we prepare towards the elections. We must preserve our status as a democratic nation and jealously guard ourselves against unpatriotic activities that have the potential to derail our achievements over the years.

Air Commodore Thomas Nii Fio Okai, Deputy Commandant of the GAFCSC, commended service commanders and partners for their support through the organisation of the exercise.

The Land Combat Fire Power Demonstration is an annual training event organized by the GAF for students of the senior division course at the GAFCSC.

The exercise aims to enhance the student’s understanding of the joint and interoperable nature of modern military operations.

GAF refutes claims of deploying military to interfere with Parliamentary proceedings https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-refutes-claims-of-deploying-military-to-interfere-with-parliamentary-proceedings/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 18:20:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463197 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has refuted media reports suggesting that military personnel were deployed to the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) to interfere with parliamentary proceedings during the Fifth Meeting of the Fourth Session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

In a statement issued by the Director-General of Public Relations on Tuesday, GAF emphatically described the reports as “false” and urged the public to treat them with the utmost contempt.

“Such misinformation among other things tarnishes the reputation of GAF,” part of the statement read.

This comes after some military personnel were sighted at the AICC premises on Tuesday morning, where Parliament was holding its Fifth Meeting.

An earlier statement from Parliament indicated that the security personnel were present at the request of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, following remarks he made on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, October 17, 2024, where the Minority Leader had urged the Speaker to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

However, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution on the Speaker’s declaration, allowing the affected MPs to retain their seats and participate in parliamentary activities until a final ruling on the matter is made.

This development sparked a leadership crisis in Parliament, disrupting the balance of power.

In light of this controversy, the Speaker formally requested GAF to perform specialised security checks, including canine and bomb sweeps, before sittings began each Tuesday.

“On Monday, October 21, 2024, the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, through the Clerk of Parliament, formally requested security assistance from GAF for routine canine and bomb sweeps of the Chamber. This standard procedure is conducted on the first sitting day of the week—typically Tuesdays—whenever Members of Parliament convene outside the traditional Parliament House,” GAF stated.

GAF clarified that the military personnel who were deployed at the Grand Arena were not there to interfere with parliamentary proceedings but solely to conduct security sweeps to ensure the safety of the venue.

“Their role was exclusively to perform these routine checks, ensuring the safety and security of the facility by searching for any explosive devices or harmful substances,” the statement continued.

GAF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all citizens and assured the public that it would continue to carry out assignments aimed at ensuring security and safety.

“We also urge media outlets to refrain from disseminating false information and to report responsibly on matters of public interest,” GAF added.

Richard Jakpa was dismissed over persistent offences and misconduct – GAF https://www.adomonline.com/richard-jakpa-was-dismissed-over-persistent-offences-and-misconduct-gaf/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 19:35:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2423351 The Military High Command has confirmed that the 3rd accused in the ongoing ambulance trial, Richard Jakpa, was dismissed from the Ghana Armed Forces based on persistent offences and acts of misconduct.

Richard Jakpa vehemently denied ever seeing the supposed letter confirming his dismissal from the military since he left the service 17 years ago.

Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah on Thursday, June 27, tendered in evidence Richard Jakpa’s supposed dismissal letter from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Mr Jakpa’s lawyers argue these claims aim to discredit his testimony in the trial involving the Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

In court on Thursday, July 18, Secretary to the Military High Command and custodian of documents at the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Adu Gyamfi discounted Richard Jakpa’s allegation that he was never given a letter relating to his dismissal.

Addressing the issue of whether or not the alleged misconducts were stated in the document and copied to Mr Jakpa, Nana Adu averred that the military does not put out offences in release instructions.
“Before such a letter would be written about an officer, he would have been taken through a series of processes. When officers commit offences, there are several interviews conducted. These interviews are documented and kept on record. These records are kept, and if nothing happens again, the records are discarded. But if the conduct continues then, the document is referred to in sanctioning the officer. Formal and informal interviews of the accused did not yield any results hence his dismissal”, he explained.
He continued, “Upon persistent offenses and misconducts, such a letter is written. The misconduct of the said officer will be at the officer’s unit before the unit will write to the general administration.”

The conduct of Mr Jakpa in the regiment over the period, he said, was not only unacceptable but smacked of indiscipline.

He recounted a series of misconducts kept on the records of Mr Jakpa.

“Mr Jakpa failed to return to his unit after taking part in officers’ promotion exams. After attending the course in Accra he failed to return to the unit. In addition to these acts, he was indebted to the tune of 400 dollars involving a Lebanese, an act that became notorious in his unit and the whole military command because of his refusal to repay the money to the businessman. This was settled by an officer.”

Asked whether Mr Jakpa was given a copy of the letter, Mr Adu Gyamfi confirmed that “Lieutenant Jakpa”, the third accused was given a copy of that report.

“He was granted a loan of $400 from the unit PRI. The money was granted to the officer (Richard Jakpa) when he was in financial difficulties. Upon persistent demands, he failed to pay the loan. In 2007, the money was converted into cedis and was deducted from his salary.”
The document of his indebtedness in 2004 was tended into evidence by the prosecution. The court, thus, admitted the document on his indebtedness into evidence.
The witness, Air Commodore Nana Adu Gyamfi was discharged.
Upon his discharge, counsel for the accused contended that they still needed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) himself to answer some questions. This was objected to by the Attorney General saying the CDS at this material moment is not a material witness.

But the court indicated that judging from the nature of the case being criminal, if the accused says he needed the CDS, their wishes should be granted.

The case was adjourned to July 23, 2024, after the list of persons who have been invited to testify before the court was thoroughly discussed. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin; Alex Segbefia, and Samuel Silas Mensah are among the persons due to mount the witness box.

GAF appeals for permanent accommodation for officers in Ahafo Region https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-appeals-for-permanent-accommodation-for-officers-in-ahafo-region/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 22:28:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410879 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has made a formal appeal for permanent accommodation for its officers stationed in the Ahafo Region in a bid to bolster security operations.

In a meeting held in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC) convened with representatives from GAF – Central Command and Newmont Ghana to discuss strategies for enhancing regional security.

Head of the Central Command, Brigadier General Michael Opoku, told Adom News that the primary challenge facing the force is the inadequate housing conditions for officers posted to the region.

Currently, many officers are residing in tents, which he described as suboptimal for effective duty performance.

Brigadier General Opoku called on private companies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to collaborate with the government in providing better living conditions for military personnel.

He specifically appealed to Newmont to consider supporting the provision of permanent accommodation, stressing that improved living conditions are crucial for maintaining robust security in the region.

In response, Ahafo Regional Minister and REGSEC Chairman, George Boakye, expressed confidence that Newmont would assist in this endeavor. He noted that Newmont has been a key supporter in enhancing regional security and believes the company will play a vital role in establishing permanent housing for the military.

Currently, military personnel are housed in temporary structures in Mim. Boakye assured that discussions with Newmont are ongoing and that permanent accommodation solutions are anticipated soon, which will significantly enhance the security capabilities in the region.

The call for improved accommodation is seen as a critical step towards ensuring that GAF officers can effectively carry out their duties and contribute to the overall safety and stability of the Ahafo Region.

Akosombo Dam spillage: We’ve not halted humanitarian operations in Mepe – GAF https://www.adomonline.com/akosombo-dam-spillage-weve-not-halted-humanitarian-operations-in-mepe-gaf/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 06:12:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2308863 Following reports that its officers stationed at Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region to support victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage had withdrawn from the area, the Ghana Armed Forces has issued a statement denying the claims.

Some media reports had suggested that soldiers deployed to the area to carry out humanitarian relief operations in support of victims of the flooding, had abandoned their duty post.

The reports were also corroborated by the Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel okudzeto Ablakwa, who was in the area at the time to also support the relief efforts.

The MP in a post on X, formerly Twitter, questioned if the people of the area were second class citizens to be treated in that manner.

But the Ghana Armed Forces in a statement issued on Sunday, October 22, and signed by its Director General in charge of Public Relations, M.A Larbi Naval Captain said the information in circulation was in “inaccurate.”

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to debunk some media reports and series of social media posts especially on Twitter (X), claiming that military personnel deployed to Mepe in Volta Region for Humanitarian Relief Operations following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, have been withdrawn. GAF wishes to categorically state that the information in circulation is inaccurate and that the personnel have not been given any ‘orders from above’ to withdraw from Mepe or any other community affected by the spillage contrary to the social media posts” portions of the statement read.

According to GAF, the operations are only being carried out by its officers in phases, for which reason the team had to redirect attention to other communities such as Battor because the situation at Mepe had been brought under “considerable control.”

It must be emphasised that the Humanitarian Relief Operations (Operation Boafo), being conducted by the Ghana Navy’s Riverine Command and the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Army is being executed in phases.”

It said it remains committed to ensuring urgent, equitable and appropriate response, in support of all persons and communities affected by the spillage in collaboration with all stakeholders.

“GAF, therefore, wishes to assure the general public that as recently reported in the media of the thousands of persons rescued and marked efforts being made to support victims, it will not relent in the quest to ensure urgent, equitable and appropriate response and support to all persons and communities affected by the spillage in conjunction with all stakeholders.”

Shortly after his initial post on social media, the MP for North Tongu made another post claiming he had received information that the initial order from above had been reversed and that the soldiers had returned to their duty post.

“I am able to confirm that the military did indeed return following the reversal of that devious order from “above.”

“Let’s be clear, the over 12,000 displaced beloved constituents of mine have done nothing wrong to deserve their current VRA-induced predicament — all we ask for is empathy and justice.”

The flooding caused by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong hydro dams has forced many communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta region to evacuate, leaving them with no choice but to live in makeshift structures in the meantime.

Reports from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) indicate that more than 26,000 individuals have been displaced by these floods.

For many, it has resulted in the loss of homes, possessions, and livelihoods.

GAF warns public over usage of military uniforms https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-warns-public-over-usage-of-military-uniforms/ Mon, 30 Jan 2023 10:16:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2210327 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a warning to civilians who wear military uniforms.

It has hinted that it is embarking on stringent measures to deal with the unauthorised use of military uniforms and equipment by civilians.

A statement released by the military states that: “The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to serve notice that it has embarked on more stringent measures in accordance with the law and its rules of engagement, to ‘appropriately’ deal with the growing menace of individuals and various groups, using military pattern clothing, equipment and another accoutrement in the country.

“GAF is putting in these extra measures following disclosures and investigations which indicate that some miscreants have been deliberately acquiring these military pattern clothing and equipment including guns, for diabolical reasons thereby escalating tension in some communities and also placing the Ghana Armed Forces in disrepute.”

This comes after GAF recently arrested a man at Bawku engaged in the re-spraying of a vehicle in military pattern colours on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.

Also, reports indicate some persons dressed in military patterns and military colour shades of clothing, have been allegedly engaged in several criminal activities towards the end of last year and early this month. These incidents have led to unsubstantiated allegations and the circulation of false information in the media that military personnel were rather responsible for these acts.

GAF has, therefore, assured the public that its personnel are putting in all efforts to fish out these alleged perpetrators who wear military pattern clothing and use military equipment to commit crimes and to deceive the unsuspecting public.

“These miscreants and imposters are derailing the immense role the Ghana Armed Forces is playing in order to secure the country, restore normalcy to some conflict-prone areas, and deter crime in various parts of the country.

“GAF, therefore, requires the maximum cooperation of all Ghanaians as it puts in these stringent measures to curb the sale, wearing of military uniforms and use of military-grade equipment by unauthorised persons as it is prohibited under NLCD 177. Those who continue to violate this Decree and others who connive in this violation will be dealt with and made to face the full rigours of the law if found,” the statement further stated.

It assured the general public of its commitment to protecting the citizenry at all times. It is therefore soliciting the support of all to enforce these measures in the interest of the needed peace and security for Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Military maps out strategy to tackle ‘galamsey’ https://www.adomonline.com/military-maps-out-strategy-to-tackle-galamsey/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 15:01:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2097410 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has mapped out new strategies, in collaboration with the Minerals Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to tackle activities of illegal miners in the country.

Details of the new strategies, which have not been disclosed, are being championed by the Central Command of the GAF in the Ashanti Region, the hub of illegal mining in the country.

In line with that, the command and its partners have begun stakeholder engagements through sensitisation programmes such as seminars.

One of such seminars was held in Kumasi last weekend to educate participants on the adverse effects of the heavy metal pollutants associated with uncontrolled small-scale mining on the environment.

It also discussed the role of district assemblies, traditional rulers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in checking the activities of small-scale miners in the communities.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Central Command, Kumasi, Brigadier-General Joseph Aphour, said the command, which had been part of the fight against illegal mining over the years, was scaling up its activities.

That, he said, was because there was still more work to be done to clamp down on the activities of illegal miners to save water bodies and the environment from further destruction.

Significance

The Assistant Manager, Small-Scale Mining and Industrial Minerals of the Minerals Commission, Mr Eric Bukari, said the programme was to help the security agencies keep abreast of evolving trends in galamsey practice and how to check the activities.

He said the commission was prepared to share information and internal strategies with relevant stakeholders to help stem the tide.

He further called on individuals and groups to volunteer information on the operations of galamseyers in their respective communities to enable the commission and the security agencies to track and arrest perpetrators of the menace.

He said currently, the commission had increased its district offices to 13, as well as opened 18 satellite and five inspectorate offices for people to volunteer information on the activities of illegal miners.

Mr Bukari appealed to people who wanted to engage in small-scale mining to go through the proper procedure to obtain the necessary documentation to operate responsibly.

Effects

Despite efforts by the government in the fight against illegal mining practices, the people, especially the youth, are still engaged in it in areas such as Manso Abore and Tontonkrom in the Amansie District in the Ashanti region.

The Ghana Water Company has said the illegal activities had contributed to the pollution of water sources with mercury and heavy metals across the country, raising the cost of water treatment and leading to water shortages.

In a letter dated January 18, signed by Cyril Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament, he said, “as pertains in other jurisdictions, the Speaker seeks to add military personnel to his security detail for his protection during road movement across the country.

He explained that “this is paramount, especially in this day and age of terrorism and violent armed robberies. Moreover, coming from the northern part of the country, he will be undertaking several trips up north to visit family and friends and conduct the business of the legislature, which will require close protection.”

Parliament requests military security for Speaker Bagbin from GAF

Parliament said four personnel have been identified to fit the role and went ahead to request the GAF Chief of Staff to release them to the Office of the Speaker.

Adekurah Andrew, S/Sgt Agbley Prosper, WO1 Jafaru Bunwura and Sgt. Bonney Prince were the officers requested to be attached to Mr Bagbin’s office.

Parliament further requested of the GAF Chief of Staff that “the personnel are well-kitted and equipped in terms of arms and ammunition to enable them to carry out their duties effectively.”

Aside from the apology, Mr Thompson says he has withdrawn the publication, pending an official response from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

“In the same medium, I made the earlier publication, I withdraw the publication pending an official response from the GCAA.

“I unreservedly apologise to the Ghana Armed Forces if their image was in any way affected by my publication. We shall put out for your consumption the response to our request from the GCAA records of the Falcon 900-EX,” he said in a Facebook post.

The apology is in connection with his allegations that a Presidential aircraft of GAF was used by relatives of President Akufo-Addo for a shopping trip to the United Kingdom.

The trip, he claimed, was between the 20th and 30th of December 2021.

GAF has since denied the allegations, stating their checks reveal the said aircraft has not been to Europe for a very long time.

This to them makes the publication “untrue, frivolous and without any basis… and a figment of the author’s imagination.”

GAF reacts to Akufo-Addo’s relatives using ‘Presidential jet for a shopping trip’ allegation https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-reacts-to-akufo-addos-relatives-using-presidential-jet-for-a-shopping-trip-allegation/ Mon, 10 Jan 2022 08:47:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2065432 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has debunked allegations that the Presidential aircraft of the Force was used by relatives of the President for a shopping trip to the United Kingdom.

Earlier reports initiated by Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability and carried by media houses suggested that the jet was accessed by the relatives of President Nana Akufo-Addo between the period of December 20 and 30, 2021.

Part of the allegations read “so between 20th and 30th of December 2021, during the Christmas, the children of a close relative of the President took Ghana’s Presidential Jet the Falcon EX jet on a trip to the UK just for Christmas shopping.”

But, per GAF’s checks, the said aircraft has not been to Europe for a very long time, making the publication “untrue, frivolous and without any basis… and a figment of the authors imagination”.

“We believe that this unfortunate publication, which has been circulated widely, is a calculated effort to undermine the image of the Ghana Armed Forces in the eyes of the general public. More disturbing is the fact that whilst the GAF is focused on its mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the country against serious external and internal threats, others are working very hard to distract us from our core mandate,” a part of the statement reads.

The GAF, by it’s statement, is admonishing the public not to drag the Force into partisan politics.

“We are calling on all Ghanaians, especially politicians once again, not to drag the GAF into any partisan politics. The Ghana Air Force platforms will continue to be used for the interest of all Ghanaians including its traditional role of maintaining fighter ground attack capabilities and providing close air support during operations, as well as providing transport support to the Ghana Armed Forces. We will continue to provide surveillance over the air space of Ghana and over the Exclusive Economic Zone of the country,” it said.

The matter has since been referred to the Inspector General of Police for further investigations.

Sanitation Ministry presents 5 pick-ups to GAF to enforce environmental bye-laws https://www.adomonline.com/sanitation-ministry-presents-5-pick-ups-to-gaf-to-enforce-environmental-bye-laws/ Fri, 10 Jul 2020 18:28:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1825406 As part of efforts to maintain and sustain good sanitation in major cities of the country, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), has donated five (5) double cabin pick-up vehicles to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The move is to enable personnel of the GAF to monitor and ensure compliance with environmental bye-laws in the national capital–Accra–and the other regional capitals in the country.

Making the presentation at the forecourt of the Directorate of Public Relations, Burma Camp, Accra, on Friday, June 10, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, said: “We are by this gesture appreciating the efforts of the Armed Forces” in the fight to ensure clean environs of our cities.”

She said it was imperative that Ghanaians strive to practice good personal hygiene and also observe good sanitation practices.

That, she said, will help prevent outbreak of diseases and keep a healthy population to support the country’s development drive.

Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul and other dignitaries at the event

“In our pursuit of general cleanliness, we should behave like animals who always keep their environs clean,” the sanitation and water resources minister suggested.

Mrs Dapaah commended the GAF for supporting her ministry in the quest to make the country clean.

“I must place on record that every time we have appealed humbly to the defence minister, he has shown readiness to assist my ministry.

…not only in the area of cleaning and cleansing, but also personnel of GAF have participated in desilting and dredging of drains across the country,” she gladly expressed.

In this regard, she commended, especially Zoomlion Ghana Limited, for being very supportive of her outfit.

Mrs Dapaah, therefore, used the opportunity to remind Ghanaians on the need to observe the Covid-19 safety protocols.

“Let us keep ourselves and environs clean and observe all the Covid-19 safety protocols, particularly the wearing of nose masks to protect ourselves and others from contracting the virus,” she reiterated.

While praising the MSWR and Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the donation, the Defence Minister, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, intimated that the gesture will contribute to achieving the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

“We cannot agree with the President less at this era of Covid-19 pandemic as such, this presentation is timely and essential,” he said.

He assured that the vehicles will be used by GAF for its purpose—monitoring of environmental sanitation programmes.

“We will also ensure that the vehicles are properly maintained to carry out the tasks in order to achieve the intended purpose for which they were presented,” the defence minister affirmed.

He expressed the hope that the existing collaboration between the two ministries–defence and sanitation and water resources–will grow as part of efforts to defeat the deadly novel coronavirus disease in the country.

He recalled the sanitation and water resources donation of some 600 waste bins to his ministry, stating that “It therefore shows the commitment and seriousness she [Mrs Dapaah] attaches to my ministry and that of hers.”

In a welcome address, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Obed Akwa, described the presentation as a “noble gesture.”

The pick-ups for COVID safety operations

According to him, collaborations such as this was essential in the country’s battle against Covid-19.

Also, he said, the presentation of the vehicles was timely, thereby applauding the gesture by the MSWR and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

He particularly lauded Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its support over the past years to GAF.

In attendance was the deputy Defense Minster, Major (Rtd) Derrick Oduro, Service Commanders, Chief Directors of the MSWR and MoD among others.

Man, 41, arrested for impersonating as Canadian Army Officer https://www.adomonline.com/man-41-arrested-for-impersonating-as-canadian-army-officer/ Wed, 29 Apr 2020 06:56:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1786024 The Ghana Military Police has arrested 41-year old Bernard Ayeh of Adjiringanor, a suburb of Accra, for allegedly personating as a Canadian Army Officer.

The said suspect was picked up around the Adentan Barrier general area wearing a camouflage uniform while driving a Mazda saloon car with registration number GR1406-20.

A statement signed by Colonel E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Director of Public Relations, Ghana Armed Forces, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, in Accra stated.

Bernard Ayeh, the statement said, had in his possession two different types of pistols (a Walther PPS Pistol Serial Numbered AK5810 with 15 rounds and a Springfield Armory XD-9 Pistol Serial Numbered XD883001).

He also had two pistol holsters, two handcuffs with keys, a jack knife, a baton, two fake Canadian Army Identity Cards, bearing the name Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Ayeh, three mobile phones and an amount of GH¢ 13,470.40.

Bernard Ayeh, the statement said, was earlier spotted by a Senior Officer of the Ghana Army around Peduase, but he sped off upon sighting the Ghana Army vehicle and thereby raising suspicion.

The Military Police was notified while the Senior Officer and his aides pursued him to the Adentan Barrier where he was eventually nabbed.

Upon interrogation, the statement said, he confessed that he was not a Canadian Army Officer and that he once worked as a contractor with the Canadian Army, during which he acquired the Canadian Army camouflage uniform.

He also disclosed that he bought one of the pistols from an official at the Ghana Police Headquarters, while he inherited the other one from a late Uncle.

Further checks by the Military Police also revealed the suspect’s name had come up in an investigation in respect of personating a military officer and other matters under investigation before the investigative agencies.

The Military Police had, accordingly, processed the suspect for referral to the Police Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution.

It, therefore, urged any member of the public who had fallen victim to the activities of the suspect to go forward to assist in investigations.

Ashaiman MP demands justice for constituent soldier accidentally ‘murdered’ https://www.adomonline.com/ashaiman-mp-demands-justice-for-constituent-soldier-accidentally-murdered/ Mon, 06 Apr 2020 14:56:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1774847 Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Henry Norgbey, is demanding for justice to be served for a constituent who was allegedly shot and killed by a soldier.

The deceased, identified as Eric Ofotsu, popularly known as No Yawa, died on Sunday, April 5 after he reportedly struggled with an armed soldier.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces  (GAF), Col. Aggrey Quashie said the deceased attempted to disarm the soldier while resisting arrest leading to a struggle during which the soldier’s rifle accidentally went off.

Read other lockdown stories

However, Mr Norbey in a statement said their initial investigations contradict the accounts by GAF and demanded an investigation into the incident and the said soldier sanctioned for his actions.

Read the full statement below:

I have received with shock and outrage news of the cold-blooded killing of Mr. Eric Ofotsu aka No Yawa, a constituent of mine in his mid-30’s who was allegedly shot by a military officer working to ensure compliance of the President’s Covid-19 lockdown directives.

As an MP for the Ashaiman constituency, I condemn in the strongest possible terms this barbaric and wicked act of a trigger-happy military officer.

Information gathered from the scene which I have no basis to doubt and contrary to the claims contained in the military’s statement suggests that the deceased did not warrant this inhumane and disproportionate use of force from a professional military officer whose training demands a far worthy example.

As much as the life of this young innocent gentleman cannot be brought back, I demand with immediate effect thorough and independent investigations into circumstances leading to the death of this young man.

We are also calling for the withdrawal of the trigger-happy soldier and all his colleagues on duty as at the time of the incident with immediate effect. This would be useful in managing tensions and preventing any further escalation.

I wish to commend the good people of Ashaiman for exercising great restraint in the face of needless provocation.

We in Ashaiman are disappointed in President Akufo-Addo who is Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces for his unacceptable silence on this major development.

When he addressed the nation on Sunday night, particularly as he sought to downplay the many incidents of human right violations and unwarranted excesses by security personnel enforcing his lockdown directives.

A situation which the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice has had cause to publicly condemn.

May I add that as much as many military officers have been quite professional in enforcing the lockdown, I would want to decry the manner in which some unscrupulous few are bringing the much respected image of the Ghana Armed Forces into utter disrepute.
I reiterate our demand for an independent investigation and swift sanctions for those who would be found culpable.

In the meantime, I urge calm and plead with the youth who are currently agitating to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of investigations.

We shall not rest or be silent until justice is secured for the family of Mr. Ofotsu and for my constituents.

May the Good Lord accept the soul of Mr. Eric Ofotsu, especially on this holy Palm Sunday.

Signed,
Ernest Henry Norgbey
[MP, Ashaiman Constituency]

GAF reacts to lockdown social media videos https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-reacts-to-lockdown-social-media-videos/ Wed, 01 Apr 2020 06:56:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1772530 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has described as fake viral videos on social media which sought to suggest mishandling of civilians by soldiers of the Operation Covid Safety team.

According to the outfit, it is convinced that the deliberate circulation of these unrelated and doctored social media material is a malicious attempt by some people to cast the operation in a bad light.

The Director of Public Relations, Colonel Aggrey Quashie, in a statement said the videos are doctored and re-cycled videos of past events some of which did not even originate in Ghana.

“It would be recalled that on Saturday, March 28, 2020, the media carried a news item purportedly showing the arrival of troops in Kumasi to ensure residents conform to the partial lockdown directives by the President.

“The purported recording featured a voice which issued threats to residents of the Ashanti region of intended brutalities by the Military,” it said

“This reportage, after our investigation, was found to be a doctored video. The said troops were in fact, part of a disinfection exercise which took place recently in Accra but had no bearing to the restrictions programme currently underway,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, it has assured that genuine incidents of the wrongful use of force by soldiers attached to the operation will be investigated with those found culpable disciplined.

Operation Covid Safety is a joint security taskforce enforcing the 14 days lockdown in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area aimed at curbing the spread of the infectious coronavirus disease.

The claims were first made in the Daily Post Newspaper. According to the paper, it had picked up Intel that soldiers returning home after their one year peacekeeping duty in Lebanon are angry with the Akufo-Addo led government for paying them a paltry $1,000 before they go on their compulsory leave.

The report added that soldiers in general throughout the country are also angry with the president for failing to pay them the salary increment he promised.

But a statement signed by Colonel Aggrey-Quashie, Director Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces stated that the report is totally false and without any iota of truth.

FALSE SPECULATION ON PEACEKEEPING ALLOWANCE OF TROOPS

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has noted with concern a false publication in the Daily Post Newspaper on 12 October 2017 claiming that troops on UN peacekeeping operations are being paid $31.00 instead of the $35.00 promised by Government.

GAF wishes to state categorically that this information is totally false and without any iota of truth. It is hereby reiterated that the approved rate of payment remains $35.00 per soldier per day without any intention of reducing it.

The negative comments being circulated with the intention of downplaying the efforts of Government in promoting troops welfare is considered to be in bad taste and the general public is hereby advised to disregard it.

Be calm but alert – Ghana Armed Forces tells Ghanaians https://www.adomonline.com/calm-alert-ghana-armed-forces-tells-ghanaians/ Mon, 21 Aug 2017 09:38:51 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=415371 In the wake of terror attacks in neighbouring countries, the Command Operations Officer (COO) at the Southern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. Col Isaac Amponsah, has advised Ghanaians to be calm but alert.
He said although the Ghana Armed Forces is ready to fight any attack, they also rely on the citizenry for intelligence; therefore, Ghanaians must be cautious of the kind of people they deal with.
Lt. Col Amponsah gave this advice in an interview with The Finder after the first batch of Infantry finished their part of ‘Exercise Starlight Stretch’ at the Bundase Military Training Camp.
He advised Ghanaians to be wary of people who preach extremist ideologies because that is the beginning of these terror attacks.
He also mentioned that Ghanaians should be careful of people who acquire weapons and report such to the appropriate authorities.
Lt. Col Amponsah called on the appropriate security agencies to ensure proper acquisition of weapons by the citizenry.
The stimulation exercise, nicknamed ‘Exercise Starlight Stretch’, was held under the auspices of the Southern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to protect Ghana’s territorial boundaries along the coast.
The exercise would be held for three infantry units of the Command, with One Infantry Battalion from Michel Camp as the first batch, followed by the 2nd Infantry Battalion from Takoradi, then the 5th Infantry Battalion from Burma Camp.
Each group would have a two-week in-house training and a week’s field training exercise.
The exercise was used to create cohesion between the young and old officers, and also reorient the troops on military tactics.
The scenario for ‘Exercise Starlight Stretch’ was the ‘fight’ between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire for the ownership of the oil discovered at Cape 3 Points in the Western Region.

NSS to petition GAF over manhandling of graduates during registration https://www.adomonline.com/nss-petition-gaf-manhandling-graduates-registration/ Wed, 26 Jul 2017 16:55:39 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=332521 Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Henry Nana Boakye, has disclosed the NSS directorate will soon send a petition to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for manhandling of some graduates at its headquarters Monday.
National Service Scheme (NSS) has since issued an apology over the manhandling of some graduates at its headquarters after a video of the incident popped up on social media.
The videos of the incident were posted on social media and they show a soldier with a stick chasing down a graduate and subsequently hitting him several times in a bid to maintain order.
In a press release on Tuesday, July 25, the Acting Chief Executive of the NSS, Ussif Mustapha, said the incident was regrettable.
The NSS, he said, “wishes to apologise to all such national service personnel and the general public for the recorded incidents of congestion which led to the manhandling”.
But speaking on the matter on Accra-based Okay FM, Nana Boakye said the respective soldiers will be reported to be punished.
He added that, the presence of the men in uniform neutralizes the misconduct of the graduates but the NSS board condemn such ‘immoral’ gestures with no rational basis.
“We don’t condone such acts. It’s bad and unfair. We are sending a petition to the soldiers… it is true the kids might have done something wrong but that doesn’t mean you should use a stick to whip them…”
“We are sorry. They should forgive us. We have video evidence. It is part of the reasons we would present to them to explain why they are doing that. We will expect them to be punished…” he maintained.

The few women who returned to the town told Adom News that they are only there to get their things and observe the situation but will flee again.

Their move comes on the back of the late Army captain who was lynched in the Central Region on Monday.

Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama of the 5th Infantry Battalion was lynched at Denkyira Boase after he was mistaken for an armed robber.

The late military officer was among others deployed to combat illegal mining activities in the at Denkyira Boase forest reserve.

But some residents who spoke to Nhyria Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah said they do not trust the word of the military not to take revenge hence they will flee to safety.

Ohemeng Tawiah reports that some residents claim they only came to spy to feed information to the others who are still hiding.

Meanwhile, the military troops have all left the area but life in the area is still not back to normal.

Military will be professional about investigation into Captain Mahama’s murder- GAF https://www.adomonline.com/military-will-professional-investigation-captain-mahamas-murder-gaf/ Tue, 30 May 2017 16:09:38 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=143081 Spokesperson of the Ghana Armed Forces Col. Aggrey Quarshie says his outfit will be professional about their investigations over the killing of an officer, Captain Maxwell Mahama, by indigenes of the mining community.

According to him, troops have been deployed to Boase in the Upper West Denkyira district of the Central region will not attack residents but rather they are there to protect the Chief of Army Staff.

“We are not going to expect that they [troops] will go and be attacking the community, no…they are going there to protect the Chief of Army Staff,” he said.

“We will leave the security agencies that are responsible for investigating such things to do that and we hope that all the culprits will be picked up and brought to book. So we expect the community members to help us arrest all the culprits,” Col. Quarshie stated.

Col. Aggrey Quarshie was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Tuesday.

Mahama was lynched by residents on suspicion of being an armed robber. The Captain was a military officer with the 5th Infantry Batallion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra but on detachment duties at the Denkyira Boase of the Central region.

Captain Mahama who is the commander of the area military detachment, according to his subordinates, was seen jogging along the main road and as he stopped by to ask some women for directions, the women saw a pistol on him.

The women who were alarmed by the discovery of the pistol on Captain Mahama mistook him for an armed robber thereby alerting their assembly member who allegedly organised some men to lynch him and even burnt him in the process.

But Col. Aggrey Quarshie reacting to the issue said about 35 troops are currently in the town to unravel the circumstances surrounding the mob killing of the young officer.

GAF is not involved in ‘galamsey’- Col Aggrey Quarshie https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-not-involved-galamsey-col-aggrey-quarshie/ Tue, 09 May 2017 05:37:53 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=109471 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied claims that its officers are involved in galamsey activities in some parts of the country as stated in a confidential National Security report.

A statement issued and signed by the Director, Public Relations of GAF, Col Eric Aggrey Quarshie said, his men were deployed to fight illegal fishing, lumbering, and pollution at Banda Nwanta and not to protect concessions of illegal miners.

According to the statement, the mining concessions that the military men officially protect, are those legally approved by the state. Citing Anglogold Ashanti and the Canada-Ghana Mining Company as key examples of concessions the military officially protects.

“It must be placed on record that GAF is yet to receive any such report and therefore is unable to comment directly on it at this material time.”

GAF is also not happy about comments being made in the media when the news about the confidential report was leaked and was discussed on an Accra based Joy FM’s “Super Morning”.

“GAF wishes to express its utter dismay at the judgment and conclusions drawn by panelists on the morning show as well as subsequent news reports, without seeking the position of GAF on the matter before going ahead to discredit the military in its entirety. Indeed, contrary to what was alleged in the reportage, the GAF was never invited to participate in the forum and to state its position.”

Below is their statement

GAF IS NOT INVOLVED IN ‘GALAMSEY’

On Friday 5 May 2017, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) monitored Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during which the host, Kojo Yankson and some panelists discussed a reported confidential National Security document which was supposedly intercepted by a Reporter, Raymond Acquah, alleging the involvement of GAF in illegal mining activities (galamsey) at Banda Nkwanta in the general area of the Bui Dam.

GAF wishes to express its utter dismay at the judgment and conclusions drawn by panelists on the morning show as well as subsequent news reports, without seeking the position of GAF on the matter before going ahead to discredit the military in its entirety.

Indeed, contrary to what was alleged in the reportage, the GAF was never invited to participate in the forum and to state its position.

It is common knowledge that GAF does not seek to engage in self-publicity.

However, in the wake of the said panelists’ discussions and the impression the Joy FM report sought to create, it has become imperative to clarify the position of GAF.

As part of its Internal Security operations in support of civil authorities, GAF personnel are deployed across the country to perform numerous operational roles in order to safeguard the integrity and security of the state and to preserve the environment.

Some of these personnel deployed under ‘OPERATION HALT’ are tasked to support efforts at curbing illegal mining activities and to provide security at state-sanctioned mining sites and concessions to ward off illegal miners, robbery attacks and encroachment.

In this regard, GAF has officially deployed personnel at Anglogold Ashanti mining sites and concessions. Under the same guiding principle of providing security to enhance socio-economic activities, such support could be extended to certified corporate bodies which require assistance.

Examples include protection of the mining concessions of the Canada-Ghana Mining Company whose property worth thousands of dollars was vandalized at Sraha in the Wassa Amenfi District.

In the case of the personnel deployed at Banda Nkwanta as reported by Joy FM, GAF wishes to state categorically that these personnel are deployed to check illegal fishing, lumbering, pollution and other activities that are deemed detrimental to the smooth operations of the Bui Dam.

Therefore, the assertion that GAF has deployed personnel to provide security at an illegal mining concession at Banda Nkwanta or to superintend over illegal mining is completely erroneous.

The commitment of GAF in enforcing the directives and ultimatum to halt ‘galamsey’ operations is demonstrated in the resolve of the Military High Command to deal with both perpetrators and collaborators.

For example, where service personnel have been identified or arrested for assisting or engaging in any activity or unauthorized operations in relation to illegal mining, they have been dealt with in accordance with the applicable Armed Forces Regulations.

On 28 March 2017 three ex-service men dressed in assorted military uniforms were picked up by a military patrol team for extortion and other activities in relation to illegal small scale mining at Wassa Akropong.

The ex-service men were handed over to the civil police for further investigations and prosecution.

The Military High Command does not condone any acts of indiscipline involving its personnel but it is worth stating it is not always that our internal disciplinary measures are brought into the public domain.

However, every misdemeanour that prejudices our service code of discipline is promptly investigated and dealt with.

In this regard, the Military High Command will be happy to receive any evidence of misconduct for immediate action.

GAF further wishes to state that it is wholly in support and involved in all the strategies designed at halting illegal mining in the country.

Indeed, the GAF has contributed positively in crafting anti-galamsey plans. GAF also acknowledges the vital role being played by the Media Coalition Against Galamsey.

However, in order not to undermine or discredit the important roles of a major stakeholder, like GAF, in the fight against galamsey, it is very important that media houses cross check their facts with GAF or other institutions for clarifications on any reports before going public.

On the confidential National Security report allegedly intercepted by the Reporter, it must be placed on record that GAF is yet to receive any such report and therefore is unable to comment directly on it at this material time.
