The latest incident occurred at Mamfe-Amamprobi, where a tanker carrying 27,000 litres of petrol crashed and began leaking dangerously.

Firefighters from the Akropong Municipal Fire Station, led by a seven-member crew, rushed to the scene and successfully averted a major disaster.

The team immediately cooled the tanker and monitored the situation while the fuel was safely offloaded into another vehicle.

The damaged tanker was later towed away. The Eastern Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Timothy Osafo-Affum, was also present to oversee the operation.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

This follows a near-catastrophe just days earlier at Neefio on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. There, a DAF petrol tanker carrying thousands of litres overturned after a tyre burst, spilling fuel under intense heat.

Thanks to the swift and tactical response by the Suhum Municipal Fire Service, a potential explosion was prevented through the use of foam concentrate and consistent cooling intervals.

In yet another incident earlier in the week, a fuel tanker with registration number GT 6870-24, loaded with 54,000 litres of petrol, was involved in an accident at New Jejeti, also along the Accra-Kumasi stretch.

The alarming frequency of these fuel tanker mishaps has sparked widespread concern, with many calling on regulatory bodies to intensify safety checks, improve driver training, and ensure stricter enforcement of roadworthiness regulations to prevent future tragedies.

Fuel tanker bursts into flames after accident at Nkawkaw https://www.Adomonline.com/fuel-tanker-bursts-into-flames-after-accident-at-nkawkaw/ Fri, 08 Jul 2022 16:28:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2135501 A fuel tanker with registration number GT 6490-Y has burnt beyond repairs after being involved in an accident at Nkawkaw, Hotel Junction.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred around 4:30am when the driver failed at an attempt to climb a hill.

The fully loaded tanker entered into a muddy ditch, causing it to spark fire which later engulfed the entire vehicle.

Municipal fire commander for Kwawu West, D03 Kofi Agbortsu, said preliminary investigations indicate the fire was as a result of contact of electricity with the fuel.

Per his deduction, the tanker had connections with some electrical wires which reacted negatively and caused the explosion.

Efforts were made to quench the blaze.

He revealed that the situation was out of hand when they arrived as residents failed to call for emergency precautions, rather, they were scrambling for the car number to stake as lotto.

D03 Kofi cautioned residents to be wary as there was a likelihood the tanker could explode due to the heat.

Possible fuel shortages to hit the country next week as tanker drivers strike https://www.Adomonline.com/possible-fuel-shortages-to-hit-the-country-next-week-as-tanker-drivers-strike/ Sat, 22 Sep 2018 16:17:34 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1347821 There could be fuel shortages in the coming days as tanker drivers across the country begin withdrawal of services starting Monday.

The over 4,000 drivers said they will park their tankers until National Petroleum Authority (NPA) addresses concerns relating to their working conditions and welfare.

By their action, petroleum products cannot be transported to fuel stations.

Chairman of Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, George Nyaunu speaking to Adom News said they are fed up with NPA.

“Enough is enough. We are no longer slaves to deserve this kind of treatment meted out to us. We are putting down our tools to see whether petroleum products will be carried across the country,” he warned.

According to the tanker drivers, what will take place could be the biggest strike ever.

“It will be in the interest of NPA to address our concerns. What will happen on Monday will have a big repercussion on the country?”

Aside condition of service, they accuse NPA of failing to follow a directive from the Energy Ministry in May this year regarding the use of an Energy Commission manual.

“The manual which regulates transportation and delivery of petroleum products is yet to be used causing the drivers to grow apprehensive,” Nyaunu indicated.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, Sunday Alabi said with their situation, government is losing in the area of tax.

“Despite signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year, NPA is not playing its role as a regulator. Transporters (tanker owners) decide how much to pay us and this is even not done through the bank,” Alabi revealed.

He said there seems too selective justice in our operations as NPA is soft on stakeholders who flout rules but extremely hard on drivers who go wrong.
