The blaze, which broke out on in the late hours of Saturday, January 17, rapidly spread through the makeshift wooden stalls due to the highly combustible nature of the materials used in their construction.

Eyewitnesses say the fire started suddenly and intensified within minutes, forcing traders and residents to flee to safety.

Items including scrap materials, tools, and personal belongings were razed by the inferno.

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, residents suspect it may have been triggered by an open flame or electrical fault within the congested settlement.

Fire personnel have been dispatched to the scene to contain the situation and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

No casualties have been reported, but the extent of damage is said to be significant.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, and prompted a swift response from the Volta Regional Command of the GNFS.

Firefighters, operating under the supervision of Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Anthony Akpabli, arrived at the scene and moved quickly to bring the situation under control.

Their timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures, including the Letsa Shopping Gate, an MTN mast and other adjoining buildings.

Two fire tenders were deployed for the operation; one from the Ho Municipal Fire Station and another from the Volta Regional Headquarters, allowing crews to effectively suppress the flames and secure the area.

No casualties were reported, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

The Suhum Municipal Fire Station received a distress call at about 4:22 a.m. on January 6, 2026, reporting the fire outbreak. A seven-member firefighting team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II (ADO II) Ocansey Bright, was immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived at 5:07 a.m. to find the building engulfed in flames.

Firefighters swiftly disconnected the power supply and began suppression operations. The blaze was brought under control at 5:26 a.m. and completely extinguished by 6:43 a.m., preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

Preliminary investigations point to an electrical fault as the cause of the fire, with a loose socket allegedly producing sparks that ignited combustible materials in the apartment.

Although no lives were lost, the hall and adjoining rooms, along with several personal belongings, were severely damaged.

Three of the bedrooms and some household items were, however, salvaged through the timely intervention of the firefighters.

The Ghana National Fire Service has once again urged the public to pay close attention to electrical safety, particularly faulty wiring and loose sockets, noting that similar incidents have occurred in the area in recent months.

According to GNFS, the fire was reported at 11:28 hours, and a fire tender from the Industrial Area Fire Station arrived on the scene within eleven minutes. Firefighters were later supported by crews from the Dansoman and Accra City Fire Stations.

The combined efforts of the crews brought the fire under control at 12:14 hours and fully extinguished it by 13:09 hours.

Although eleven single rooms were destroyed, firefighters were able to salvage several adjoining houses, preventing the fire from spreading further and averting more extensive damage.

GNFS said investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to rapid response, professionalism, and the protection of lives and property.

The first incident was an early-morning institutional fire at Merton Montessori School, located opposite the Osu Cemetery.

The fire was reported at 06:02 hours, and a crew from the Ministries Fire Station arrived within seven minutes, at 06:09 hours. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 06:23 hours and fully extinguished it by 06:50 hours.

Damage was limited to furniture, stationery and air-conditioning units.

The second incident occurred at the Ablekuma Curve junction, where firefighters from the Anyaa Fire Station, who were on a routine safety inspection, discovered a generator on fire inside a store. Using a nearby dry chemical powder extinguisher, the officers swiftly brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading and averting a potential major outbreak.

GNFS said the timely response saved the generator from extensive damage and protected surrounding properties. The Service commended ADO I Derick Dodoo, ADO I Dickson Coffie and SO I Samuel Tettey Tetteh for their vigilance, professionalism and exemplary conduct in the line of duty.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to rapid response and public safety as investigations into the incidents continue.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started in one shop before spreading rapidly to nearby stores due to the close arrangement of structures and the presence of flammable materials.

The affected shops belonged to fashion designers, hairstylists, and second-hand goods dealers, with all items inside completely destroyed.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, officers from the Ghana National Fire Service in Juaboso have begun investigations. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

The GNFS said it received a distress call at 4:50pm, with the first fire tender from the Kasoa Fire Station arriving at the scene eight minutes later to find the fire already at an advanced stage.

Due to the rapid spread of the blaze, reinforcements were immediately called in from Weija, Anyaa, Dansoman, Industrial Area, Flagstaff House, Madina and Swedru fire stations.

In all, eight fire engines were deployed; six from the Greater Accra Region and two from the Central Region. Firefighters managed to confine the fire at 6:52pm, brought it under control at 7:52pm, and fully extinguished it by 10:00pm.

Although several metallic shops and wooden stalls were destroyed, along with food items such as maize, beans, shea butter, spices and other merchandise, the swift response by firefighters prevented the blaze from consuming the entire market.

GNFS officials say thousands of metal container shops and stalls, together with their contents, were saved.

Firefighting operations were, however, hampered by poor accessibility within the market, long distances to reliable water sources and interference from members of the public at various points during the operation.

The incident marks the second major fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market within the past two years, though at different sections of the market.

Fire tenders from Kasoa and Swedru have been left on standby to prevent any possible re-ignition, while investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Firefighters from the Kasoa and Weija Fire Stations are currently battling the blaze, with reinforcement arriving from several other commands.

Fire tenders from Legon, Madina, Dansoman, and the Flagstaff House have all been dispatched to support efforts at the scene.

Additionally, all available fire pumps from Accra have been mobilised to help contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

Firefighting operations are ongoing as authorities work to bring the situation under control.

No casualties have been confirmed yet, while the extent of damage is still being assessed.

According to the GNFS, the incident occurred when the transformer, located within the school premises, caught fire under circumstances suspected to be electrical in nature.

Upon receipt of a distress call, personnel from the Anfoega Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The firefighters arrived promptly and swiftly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby school structures and facilities.

The fire was fully extinguished within a short time, with no injuries recorded and no additional damage reported.

The GNFS said the quick response and effective handling of the situation helped safeguard students, staff, and school property.

Normal activities at the school were not significantly disrupted following the incident.

The Service has advised institutions and the general public to regularly inspect electrical installations and report any faults early to prevent similar occurrences.

In an update on the incident, the GNFS said the Ministries Fire Station responded to a commercial fire involving a metal container on Friday, 12 December 2025.

The container, located at Kelewele Junction in Osu, opposite the Prestige Suite Hotel, was being used for the preparation and sale of tiger-nut beverages.

According to the Service, a distress call was received at 9:59 am, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters at 10:00 am. The crew arrived at the scene six minutes later to find the container fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from the Ministries and Parliament Fire Stations worked swiftly to contain the blaze, bringing it under control at 10:25 am and fully extinguishing it by 10:40 am.

The rapid response prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures, with two drinking-bar containers and their contents successfully salvaged.

No casualties were recorded. Firefighters secured the scene before returning to their stations at 11:16 am.

The GNFS reiterated its call for strict adherence to fire safety practices, particularly in the handling and use of gas cylinders, to prevent similar incidents.
