Jorgensen, 22, started Chelsea’s most recent Premier League game against West Ham in place of Sanchez, who has made a number of high-profile errors.

Sanchez – who has a joint Premier League-high of five mistakes leading to goals this season – returned for the FA Cup loss at Brighton, but Maresca confirmed Jorgensen is now Chelsea’s number one.

“I said that the Filip solution [against West Ham] was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically,” the Blues boss said.

“But the idea is not to game-by-game change the keeper. In the last Premier League game we had Filip and in the FA Cup, it was Robert. Our keeper at the moment is Filip.”

Maresca added: “I spoke with Robert a few days before West Ham where I took the decision to play Filip. I never spoke again with Robert. Filip, exactly the same.

“They know the situation. This is the situation now and then we will see.”

Jackson out for up to eight weeks

Maresca also confirmed that forward Nicolas Jackson has been ruled out for “around six to eight weeks” with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old came off injured against West Ham two weeks ago and, although Maresca was initially hopeful the Senegal striker had avoided a major setback, scans have since revealed the problem to be worse than feared.

Jackson has scored nine goals so far this season, making him Chelsea’s second-top goalscorer behind Cole Palmer with 14.

It leaves the Blues without a recognised number nine after Spaniard Marc Guiu, who replaced Jackson at West Ham, picked up a serious groin injury in the same match.

“Nico [Jackson] will be out until the international break, probably available after the international break,” Maresca said.

“We knew it was a muscular problem, but not how important it was. His reaction was quite good, so we all thought it wasn’t a big injury.

“Unfortunately, he had the scan, and it is an important one – he will be out for around six to eight weeks.”

Palmer and Christopher Nkunku are likely to deputise up front, with the latter starting in the 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Brighton.

Wingers Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke and Tyrique George were also mentioned as possible alternatives by the Chelsea boss.

Maresca’s side, who are fourth in the Premier League, visit Brighton again in the league on Friday.

The Italian confirmed Reece James is available for the match and that the right-back’s absence from Saturday’s FA Cup tie was a planned rest as he continues to be carefully managed having only just returned from a hamstring injury.

Maresca open to dropping Sanchez for Jorgensen https://www.adomonline.com/maresca-open-to-dropping-sanchez-for-jorgensen/ Fri, 31 Jan 2025 11:00:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2499317 Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says he has yet to decide which goalkeeper will face West Ham on Monday – having previously backed number one Robert Sanchez despite high-profile mistakes.

Sanchez, 27, has been the Italian coach’s first-choice keeper but has made a joint Premier League-high of five mistakes leading to goals this season.

Having previously said mistakes are common with his style of play, Maresca hinted at a possible change with deputy Filip Jorgensen an option – as former Chelsea manager Graham Potter returns to Stamford Bridge on Monday with the Hammers.

“Not yet,” Maresca replied when asked if he had decided which goalkeeper is playing, adding: “We have two or three days for the decision.

“The good thing is that any decision I take, I feel good because every time Filip has played since we started, he has done well.

“Filip or Robert, we will see but any decision will be okay.”

Maresca was asked whether Jorgensen is pressuring him to start another league game having had just two league starts this season.

“I don’t think so because the first time I spoke with Filip in June or July, I was clear that the number one choice was Robert,” he added.

“For sure, if the number one is Robert and then because we have two good goalkeepers, we can make some different decisions.

“This doesn’t mean that Robert can make a mistake every game and is always going to play. The number one choice was Robert and we will see on Monday.”

Chelsea sign keeper Jorgensen from Villarreal https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-sign-keeper-jorgensen-from-villarreal/ Wed, 31 Jul 2024 09:09:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2427921 Chelsea have signed goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for £20.7m on a seven-year contract.

The 22-year-old Dane made 37 appearances for Villarreal last season after becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

“This move is a dream come true,” said Jorgensen. “I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new team-mates.”

Jorgensen is expected to compete for Chelsea’s number-one position with Robert Sanchez.

Born in Sweden, Jorgensen represented the country at age grade level before switching allegiance to Denmark Under-21s, who he qualifies for through his paternal heritage.

He signed for Villarreal as a 15-year-old and progressed through the club’s youth set-up before making his senior debut in October 2020 for the B side.

Jorgensen, who made his La Liga debut in January 2023, has flown to the United States to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour.

The Blues have three games left so he could feature against any of Club America, Manchester City or Real Madrid before they travel home next week.

Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign at home to champions City on Sunday, 18 August (16:30 BST).

Chelsea agree deals for Jorgensen and Anselmino https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-agree-deals-for-jorgensen-and-anselmino/ Sat, 27 Jul 2024 16:45:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2426682 Chelsea have agreed deals in principle to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino.

Jorgensen, 22, is set for a medical after a £20.7m fee was agreed and expected to sign a seven-year contract until 2031.

The Denmark Under-21s international was a major target of new manager Enzo Maresca, who wants an additional goalkeeper capable of using the ball well with his feet.

Jorgensen will compete to be the club’s number one, but his move puts Djordje Petrovic’s future in doubt after the Serbian stopper filled in for the injured Robert Sanchez last season as first choice.

Spaniard Sanchez spoke about facing renewed competition after he started in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham in their first pre-season match.

“You never know, but at the moment I am training hard,” said the former Brighton keeper, 26. “Another goalkeeper? I know what I can bring to the team, what I can do and I am positive in myself.”

Jorgensen is expected to join up with Chelsea for their US tour, with matches against Celtic, Club America, Manchester City and Real Madrid to come.

Meanwhile, centre-back Anselmino will cost 15.6m but will go back on loan to Boca Juniors until at least January.

The 19-year-old is regarded as an option for the future in the same vein as their other young signings from South America, like Ecuadorian teenager Kendry Paez and Brazilian Estevao Willian.

Anselmino will also sign a seven-year contract until 2031, but Chelsea can only spread the transfer fee for both players over five years in their accounts, as per Premier League rules.

Both signings will take their summer spending to around £110m, though they have brought in around £85m in sales.
