She expressed her grievances regarding the treatment she has received from Yaw Sarpong’s family since he fell ill.

Married to Yaw Sarpong for forty years, Adwoa revealed that ever since her husband became ill, his family has denied her access to him.

She also accused Tiwaa, the female vocalist who has been with Yaw Sarpong, of taking him away from her.

Adwoa mentioned that she had lived with Tiwaa for thirteen years in Ashtown, a suburb of Kumasi, but claimed that Tiwaa had transitioned from being just a vocalist to becoming Yaw Sarpong’s concubine.

A few months ago, Yaw Sarpong’s manager confirmed that the artiste was battling a stroke.

It was disclosed that, the “Oko Yi” hitmaker had been ill for over a year.

Prior to this confirmation, gospel singers Diana Asamoah and Maame Tiwaa had already informed the public of Yaw Sarpong’s illness.

The Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, contributed GH¢100,000 to aid Yaw Sarpong’s medical care.

In her interview with Auntie Naa, Adwoa shared several claims. They include:

  1. Yaw Sarpong fell sick and was admitted to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). He told her that his sisters wanted to take him to a pastor at Sokoban Ampayoo for intervention, advising her to stay home and pray instead of accompanying him.
  2. Four days later, feeling uneasy about the situation, Adwoa visited the pastor’s place to see what was happening. She found Tiwaa taking care of Yaw Sarpong and was furious, feeling that Tiwaa had overstepped given Adwoa’s role in her rise.
  3. Yaw Sarpong’s siblings do not like her, with the exception of one, Poku.
  4. One of his sisters, who lives abroad, accused Adwoa of squandering Yaw Sarpong’s money.
  5. After discovering that Tiwaa was taking care of Yaw Sarpong, none of his family members sought an amicable resolution. Instead, Adwoa was told she had been divorced, although customary practices indicated she was still married to him.
  6. Adwoa believed Tiwaa should have refused the request to care for Yaw Sarpong out of respect for their past relationship.
  7. Tiwaa consistently fought Adwoa to prevent her from being with Yaw Sarpong, claiming a bishop had instructed them to deny access.
  8. Adwoa was pained to learn that, while visiting one of her children who had been in an accident, Vice President Bawumia had donated money to Yaw Sarpong. She suggested using part of the money to complete Yaw Sarpong’s housing project at Kokosu, but the family objected and ultimately wasted the money.
  9. Yaw Sarpong’s car, which he used for errands before falling ill, was seized by his elder brother. Despite needing the car for hospital visits, it remained in his brother’s possession without a clear reason.
  10. Adwoa emphasized that she is speaking out not because of the money from Dr. Bawumia, but because she has exhausted all other avenues.
  11. She claimed that Tiwaa is in an amorous relationship with Yaw Sarpong.
  12. Tiwaa once told Yaw Sarpong to marry her when they lived in Bohyen, a suburb of Kumasi. This case was brought before the chief of Bohyen. Yaw Sarpong stated he couldn’t marry a second wife, but Tiwaa insisted, and Adwoa witnessed the entire situation.

John Dumelo addresses accusations of assaulting UG student at registration center https://www.adomonline.com/john-dumelo-addresses-accusations-of-assaulting-ug-student-at-registration-center/ Thu, 30 May 2024 02:07:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402062 Actor and politician John Dumelo has responded to accusations that he brutalized a University of Ghana student during a recent altercation at a voter registration center in Legon.

The incident involved Dumelo and a student identified as Dacosta, who confronted Dumelo over restrictions on his phone usage at the center.

The verbal exchange escalated and nearly turned physical before security officers intervened and escorted Dumelo away.

A political commentator later reported on social media that Dacosta had sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

The commentator even attached a photo of a bloody knee, which was later proven to be unrelated to the incident and did not even occur in Ghana.

In response to calls for legal action against the individual spreading false information, Dumelo dismissed the idea.

He remarked that in legal terms, it is often impractical to sue someone without substantial means (“a man of straw”) as it would be challenging to enforce any resulting financial judgment.

The male passenger is said to have boarded the vehicle from Lapaz heading to Pokuase and was told the fare had been increased from GH₵5.50 to GH₵7.70.

His body has since been deposited at the morgue.

Benefits of small arguments between married couples https://www.adomonline.com/benefits-of-small-arguments-between-married-couples/ Thu, 13 Jan 2022 08:26:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2066740 Fights and arguments are healthy as long as a few rules are followed and neither of you cross that line.

It is healthy to bicker which is why everyone says that if you are not fighting then something is wrong in your relationship. Sounds absurd?

Here are 5 reasons why small arguments are beneficial for married couples.

Opinions aren’t hidden

Your relationship definitely becomes stronger when you hold back no grudge and instead say it out loud in front of your partner.

Even if there are disagreements, there is nothing hidden.

You express what you feel and what you think. No one holds a grudge against the other so it becomes a transparent relationship.

Intimacy

Many experts say that by arguing with each other your intimacy with your partner increases as well.

You do end up apologising to each other, making amends. This brings you two closer.

Trust building

When we discuss things and argue a little, we are not keeping secrets, therefore the trust remains.

However, if in a relationship there are no arguments, there lurk many secrets and therefore both the partners end up doubting each other.

However, it is important that the argument is not one-sided. Both should listen to each other’s opinion otherwise it becomes completely unhealthy.

It feels better

When we speak what we have in our hearts and mind, we tend to feel better. Even if you both have argued, in the end, it feels good and relaxing.

Healthy debates are always good and make sure that you solve your issues before going to bed.

Character improvement

After a few fights and arguments, your patience increases for your partner. You may not realise it immediately but now that we have reminded you, you may realise how your care and love for your partner increases over time.

Many people even adapt themselves according to the other to avoid unnecessary arguments.

But you must make sure that these arguments are not too often and not unpleasant. Do not cross the limit.

If you feel that the other is crossing the line, simply get up and leave that room.

Do not reciprocate as that will simply bring out the worst side of you and you do not want that to happen.

Microphone snatching, blows at Juaboso assembly meeting https://www.adomonline.com/microphone-snatching-blows-at-juaboso-assembly-meeting/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 16:43:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2039269 Assembly members of the Sehwi Juaboso District of the Western North Region engaged in a fight during assembly sitting to approve their budget.

This came after the Presiding Member of the district assembly, Adu Blankson, at the meeting challenged the position of the District Chief Executive (DCE).

According to him, he does not recognise Godfred Kwabena Agyei Asante as the appropriate person to occupy that seat, despite being appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo and confirmed.

Prior to that, he made his dissatisfaction against Mr Asante known after he headed to court to challenge why the DCE was confirmed despite losing elections.

Mr Blankson took his grievances to the meeting and prevented the DCE from delivering his keynote address at the meeting. His action did not go down well with some assembly members which resulted in a fight.

An Assemblyman for Boinzan electoral area, Affun Kroko Stephen, told Adom News that he had no option than to snatch the microphone from Mr Blankson for the scheduled event to continue.

Consequently, blows were traded by the divided assembly members.

Asked by Adom News’ Augustine Boah whether the microphone snatching was the best approach, he defended it was perfect.

To him, Mr Blankson is allowing personal sentiments to get the better of him, which will not be in the interest of the authority, and for that he had to put him in his place.

“There were authorities and police officers around, if I had erred, they would have addressed the situation,” he said.

After the scuffle, Mr Asante was allowed to address the august gathering and approved the budget.

4 amazing ways to make up with your partner after a fight https://www.adomonline.com/4-amazing-ways-to-make-up-with-your-partner-after-a-fight/ Thu, 14 Oct 2021 10:40:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2028234 It’s normal to fight with a partner, but how do you make up afterwards? It’s important to be mature in how you handle a fight.

This means taking responsibility for your actions and apologizing for any wrongdoing. Communicate openly with your partner and make sure to be an effective listener.

When moving past the fight, give your partner positive attention and show that you’re willing to make changes for the benefit of your relationship.

Here are a few ways you can make up with your partner after a fight:

  • Give each other a massage

Fighting takes a toll on your muscles, your shoulders tense, your neck strains, your stomach knots.

Help each other relieve those stress-related aches and pains with a makeup massage that could lead to more.

  • Stroke his ego

Did you tick off his most unpleasant traits as if you’d written them down during your disagreement? If so, consider taking turns talking over each other’s best qualities.

Not only will it make you both feel on top of the world, but it will also remind you why you love each other in the first place.

  • Remove your clothes

Show each other just how much you care. Now’s the time to have the exact kind of dirty sex he’s been begging you for, or for him to cater to one of those fantasies you’ve been hinting at forever.

  • Transfer your need to “win” to a board game

In every couple, there’s one person who always needs to be right. If that’s you, challenge him to a board game, and try to “win” at something other than a fight.

If that’s him, suggest a game of strip poker or truth or dare. Because in that case, no one really loses.

The two lawyers, John Yuwa Esq and MK Gurumyen Esq, were arguing a motion for stand down before Chief Magistrate Yusuf Idi Saluk, when the incident occurred.

According to the Nigeria Bar Association, Gombe Branch, “They were before the court for a pending criminal case filed by our learned colleague, Yakubu Chidama, Esq. and others as Complainants against the Management of JED Plc Gombe.

“When the case came up, the Defense Counsel Yuwa, Esq. applied that the matter be stood down for at least 30 minutes to enable his sick client arrive at the court premises and proceed with the matter.”

In opposing the application, MK Gurumyen Esq. made a prayer that if the Defense Counsel is sincere with his application, then may God heal his client, but if otherwise, may God increase the severe pain on the sick accused person.

Then, a hot argument ensued between them in the presence of the court and Gurumyen punched Yuwa, leading to a serious wound inside and outer part of his mouth.

Gurumyen, however, stated that it was the wounded counsel that first hit his nose with his finger while ordering ‘this boy sit down,’ adding he punched him in retaliation, a claim Yuwa denied.

The matter was later reported at Tumfure Police Division, while the wounded counsel was taken to the hospital, where he was scanned, diagnosed and treated with stitches inside and outer parts of his mouth.

Moment fight broke out in studio after popular actor met his troll [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/moment-fight-broke-out-in-studio-after-popular-actor-met-his-troll-video/ Tue, 24 Aug 2021 14:50:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2005248 After months of running their mouths on social media the moment of separating the ‘boys from the men’ has finally come.

This is the case of popular actor, Jim Iyke and his colleague, Uche Maduagwu, who has made it a business to pry into Mr Iyke’s financial affair.

Actor Iyke faced Mr Maduagwu fair and square when they clashed at a radio station where the former was booked for an interview to promote his newly premiered movie.

Mr Iyke, who has harboured anger in him for a while, confronted Mr Maduagwu for releasing what he said are libellous statements against him.

Recall Mr Maduagwu had challenged the veteran actor to reveal the source of his wealth, after he alleged that he is financed by some politicians as well as shady deals and rituals.

In his words: “I will leave Nollywood the day Jim Iyke will tell us the source of his wealth.”

According to him, the actor’s salary off movies does not correspond with the flashy lifestyle he shows off, including buying expensive imported clothes.

Mr Maduagwu, in his argument, made reference to Hushpuppi, a billionaire currently facing trial for international money laundering and cyber crime.

Mr Iyke has finally responded to the accusation; not the verbal banter he wanted, but with punches and kicks.

In videos circulated on social media, a furious actor Iyke could be seen asking some aids why they allowed Mr Maduagwu into the premise knowing fully well he has been invited.

“Are you mad? You think I won’t find you, a troll in real life. What is he doing here?” he confronted.

Mr Maduagwu, however, reiterated his accusations, a move that touched his nerve.

In retaliation, Mr Iyke flew in a punch which missed the target, but his kick was on point.

He threw Mr Maduagwu out of the studio hallway and proceeded to meet him in the chamber where the scuffle continued.

I’ll kill you – MP threatens colleague as fight breaks out in Pan-African Parliament https://www.adomonline.com/ill-kill-you-mp-threatens-colleague-as-fight-breaks-out-in-pan-african-parliament/ Mon, 31 May 2021 19:16:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1967123 Tempers flared again at the Pan-African Parliament sitting in Midrand on Monday with members halting the scheduled elections, complaining that they felt unsafe in South Africa.

“We want this parliament to be relocated to another country. We are going to be killed here in South Africa,” some members chanted.

“No relocation, no election,” others chanted.

On Friday, one of South Africa’s representatives in Parliament, Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema, had a heated exchange with another member and mentioned that he would “kill” that fellow parliamentarian.

Tension was palpable within the chambers of the legislative body of the African Union (AU) as members sit on Monday to elect new leadership amid fierce contestation.

On Friday, events came to a head after it was announced that the elections would not go ahead on Thursday as scheduled, as a staffer had tested positive for Covid-19. The elections were then postponed, igniting heated exchanges between the parliamentarians.

A visibly angry Malema, pointing his finger, could be heard threatening to tackle a fellow member wearing green.

Malema said: “What kind of leadership is this? Nonsense!”

“You are pointing me with a finger now? No, I will definitely kill you outside this building,” Malema shouted.

South African MPs, with Malema leading the charge, were of the view that the elections should be postponed, and the sitting adjourned immediately in line with set Covid-19 protocols.

Parliamentarians opposed to the postponement maintained that the said Covid-19 case was a strategy to postpone the term of office for the controversial incumbent, Cameroonian Roger Nkodo Dang.

NDC to resist attempt by EC to compile new Voters Register (Listen) https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-to-resist-attempt-by-ec-to-compile-new-voters-register-listen/ Thu, 19 Dec 2019 18:06:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1734178

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will in the strongest terms resist attempts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new Voters Register for the 2020 elections.

The party addressed a news conference in Accra where it is demanding answers from the electoral body about its decision to make a new voter roll.

ALSO: Coup plot trial: State prosecutors abusing their powers – Defence lawyer

Though the party concedes improving the electoral process is imperative, it says attempts by the EC to change a register which was only days ago used to elect more than 50,000 assembly members across the country, will be unconstitutional.

For the NDC, a wiser approach would be an open and wide consultation with all stakeholders on the real need for a new register.

General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is alleging the decision to have a new register is a ploy to bloat voter numbers in New Patriotic Party strongholds and suppress voter numbers in NDC strongholds.

He is demanding the EC sets up a technical committee of experts of party representatives and the Commission itself to deliberate over the need for a new Voters Register.

ALSO: Police CID invites NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi over alleged cybercrime

Mr Nketia urged civil society groups and faith based organisations to rise and speak up about the EC’s decision to ‘unilaterally’ procure a new voter roll.

The party believes a broad, honest conversation among the stakeholders will iron out the rough edges on the matter, which is splitting opinions.

The duo is believed to be nursing a parliamentary ambition.

Photos: Wild brawl at wedding as families ‘clash’, guests left covered in blood https://www.adomonline.com/photos-wild-brawl-at-wedding-as-families-clash-guests-left-covered-in-blood/ Mon, 14 Oct 2019 12:57:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1712579 Shocking footage shows wedding guests punching each other amid the sound of screams and breaking glass as families allegedly clash at a Ramada hotel in Wolverhampton.

Well-dressed wedding guests exchanged blows – leaving a man covered in blood – as families allegedly clashed during a wild brawl at a lavish party.

Shocking footage shows men fighting and chairs and wine glasses being raised in the air amid the sound of screams and breaking glass in a hotel ballroom.

The combatants – condemned as “idiots” and “animals” – ruin the bride and groom’s big day as they punch and kick each other during a massive fight at the Ramada Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton.

During the melee a man takes the microphone and pleads “everyone calm down … the police are outside”, but the mayhem continues and the bloodied man is led away by another guest, BirminghamLive reports.

Paramedics said a teenage girl who was working at the wedding was treated for a “medical condition and injuries sustained in the disturbance”, and three men were also taken to hospital.

West Midlands Police said three men were seen with facial injuries, but no-one reported being assaulted.

Aman Singh, who was at the wedding, said there was “chaos” as families clashed.

He added: “There were punches flying all over the place and we saw someone being taken into an ambulance – I hope he is ok.

“This is not how you want a wedding to end.”

Another guest, who did not want to be named, said one man had blood streaming down his face from an injury.

The guest said: “It was disgusting. This poor bloke was left with blood literally pouring down his face.

“This isn’t how a wedding should be conducted – they were animals.”

A third guest, who also did not want to be named, blamed alcohol for the violence.

Referring to the combatants as “idiots”, a man who posted the video on Facebook – where it went viral – wrote: “Fight scenes from an indian bhatra wedding at park hall ramada wolverhampton.”

The brawl broke out at around 5.30pm on Saturday while the hall was decorated with rose tree centrepieces on tables, satin drapes, elegant chairs and red carpets.

In the video, there is a huge crowd around the dance floor as men trade blows and others try to pull them apart while several woman scream in horror.

A man is seen raising a chair in the air and approaching the combatants before a woman in a white dress and heels stops him.

The man who is covered in blood and another man – seen raising a wine glass over his head – fall to the floor and several others then join in as they swing wildly next to the stage.

Members of a band look on in disbelief and a man pulls back his hair after his turban was apparently ripped or knocked off during the brawl.

As men are knocked to the floor, the same woman steps into the fray in a desperate but futile bid to stop the fight.

A man crashes into her back as he is decked, and she then tries to help a man who repeatedly falls to the floor while stumbling away from the fracas.

People then gather around an injured man as he lay on the floor.

Footage shows the bloodied man being led away by another guest as shocked witnesses look on.

During the brawl a man pleaded with the men to stop fighting.

He says: “Everyone calm down now. Calm down. The police are outside, calm down. Everyone just keep stepping away.

“If you are not involved, please move away. Like I said if you are not involved please move away.”

But the fighting continued.

A DJ from Kudos Music later wrote on Instagram to deny his music played any part in the violence erupting.

Another video posted online appeared to show a fight outside the hotel.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called to a disorder at the Ramada Park Hall hotel on Park Drive in Wolverhampton just after 9.30pm on Saturday.

“Three men were seen with facial injuries, although no-one has reported being assaulted.

“One woman was taken to hospital to be checked over, but was not physically injured.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it received at least nine calls and sent a major response to the hotel.

Footage of the brawl went viral after it was posted on social media (Image: Birmingham Mail)

“We received no fewer than nine calls to reports of a brawl at a wedding at the Park Hall Ramada Hotel in Wolverhampton at 9.30 on Saturday evening.

“Given the initial description of the incident and suggestions that there were numerous casualties, we sent three ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Hazardous Area Response Team to assist with triaging and the mental health car which has a paramedic, police officer and mental health nurse.

“Ambulance staff rapidly assessed a large number of potential patients.

“In total, there were four casualties that needed further assistance.

“A teenage girl who had been working at the event was treated at the scene for a medical condition and injuries sustained in the disturbance.

“After assessment by ambulance staff, she was taken to New Cross Hospital.

“Two men in their 20s were taken to the same hospital with injuries sustained in the incident.

“A man in his 40s, who had also been injured in the incident, was assessed but chose not to go to hospital against advice from the paramedic on scene,” it said.

Angry members of the community suspect some nationals of Benin, who occupy the four-bedroom house, were behind the recent spate of killings in the area.

The fire left one of the rooms badly burnt with the ceiling completely burnt.

It took a police reinforcement team to control the irate youth who besieged Ejisu Police Station to demand release of a colleague in custody over the attempted arson.

Ejisu Divisional Commander, ACP Stephen Tene Ngissah has since condemned the action of the youth.

“Their action can never be justified because you can’t take the law into your hands,” he said.

Linda’s suspected murder had sparked anger among residents after her body was found near an uncompleted building a week after her disappearance.

Several unresolved murders have hit Jamasi in the Ejisu Municipality.

Residents say, at least, five people, including a child have died in bizarre circumstances in recent times.

Relatives of the latest victim, whose almost decomposed body was found in a bush, said some of her body parts were missing.

An uncle, Moses Adongo, who confirmed this to Nhyira FM, said he will never trust the police for the unresolved deaths.

“Someone was shot to death and his body burnt here. What did they do? A security officer was tied up and killed. Five deaths. What have they done about them?” he quizzed.

No arrest has been made in connection with the murders amidst public criticisms that the police have been lackadaisical in resolving murders in the community.

They suspect a group of nationals from Benin are responsible for the murders.

You know how these soothsayers and these fetish priests -they deal with blood and certain things for their sacrifices. So it was then that people suspected them,” a landlord, Rashad Seidu said.

The Ejisu Divisional Commander said “it was just this morning that somebody told us this is the fourth time such thing has happened. Did they inform police? Did they give credible information to the police because if you are suspecting somebody, you are staying with the criminal; you are staying with the man. You should have come to tell police to act.”

ACP Ngissah urged the public to volunteer information for the arrest of the suspects.

President of the Association, Dr Joseph Obeng said the Police only enjoy intimidating trade union members and have refused to discharge their duties by arresting criminals.

Two Nakuru MCAs caused drama at the House’ precincts on Tuesday, July 31, after they came to blows over a boyfriend.

Honourables Joyce Anyiso and Jacqueline Manyara had a bitter verbal exchange before their fight went physical.

One of the MCAs was overheard warning the other keep off her boyfriend.

Anyiso accused Manyara of attacking her first. Assembly orderlies assisted by other female MCAs intervened.

The disqualified aspirants and their supporters attacked and engaged in violent fisticuffs with some members of the vetting panel, accusing the panel of unfair treatment.

The Regional chairman, Sofo Azorka, engaged in a direct physical struggle with a supporter of a disqualified aspirant from the Karaga constituency.

Three constituencies, Karaga, Wulensi and Bimbilla, were billed for the vetting but the party was forced to suspend the exercise due to the mass disqualification of aspirants from the Karaga constituencies and the subsequent melee that followed.

The confrontation was allegedly sparked by the vetting committee clearing incumbent executives of the constituency while disqualifying new aspirants.

It took the intervention by other aspirants and members of the party to end the situation after which the regional executives were escorted into their vehicles.

Four aspirants out of twelve from the Savelugu constituency earlier disqualified on Friday also came to the party office to protest the decision by the regional executives.

Speaking to the media after the incident, the disgruntled members said the regional executives treated them unfairly and threatened to contest their disqualification in the law court.

The Regional Chairman who spoke to the media before the incident said the aspirants were disqualified for a number of reasons.

According to him, most of them were disqualified for engaging in activities that contributed to the massive defeat of the party during the last general elections.

He explained that most of them supported independent candidates and also worked against the party during the elections.

The chairman also said some of the aspirants were disqualified for non-payment of dues while others were simply found not to be ready to occupy positions they were aspiring to hold.

Bishop Obinim said, “I heard on the news the other time that a fellow man of God is getting married for the third time? I read in the newspapers that this is the third wife. I felt sorry for the woman because she should have thought about the previous two [wives] first. This means that if she, the third wife makes a mistake, she will also be replaced by number four”.

Gold, guns and China: Ghana’s fight to end galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/gold-guns-china-ghanas-fight-end-galamsey/ Tue, 13 Jun 2017 11:15:30 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=177681 At the start of April, Ghana’s government issued a three-week ultimatum to illegal gold miners operating in the country. They were told that they could either stop their activities or face prosecution.

The threat seemed to work. By the end of the three weeks, over 500 excavators used in informal artisanal gold mining – known locally as “galamsey” – had reportedly been voluntarily removed from mining sites.

This ultimatum was part of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s promise to eradicate the problem of galamsey “once and for all”. The previous month, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which came to power in January, had launched a five-year project to provide illegal miners with alternative livelihoods in the legal mining sector.

Illegal small-scale mining has long proliferated across Ghana, Africa’s second and the world’s tenth largest gold exporter. But recent foreign investment coupled with industrialisation has significantly exacerbated its negative effects.

Many more people, including thousands from China, have been drawn into the sector. The Information Minister recently claimed there are now 200,000 people engaged in galamsey, while other sources suggest nearly 3 million rely on it for their livelihoods.

Locally, the practice contributes to surges in crime and violence. Nationally, it represents huge sums in lost revenue and exports.

In its electoral campaign, the NPP pledged to curb galamsey. And since coming to power, various media campaigns have ensured the new government keeps to its word.

[The hope and (over-)promise of Ghana’s new government]

While the practice may have once been tolerated or ignored, local populations are increasingly reporting it. TV and radio shows have been inviting officials to explain their plans to tackle the issue more frequently, and the topic dominates daily news bulletins. Meanwhile, environmental groups recently called on the government to impose a blanket ban on all metal mining.

In contrast to governmental threats to the galamsey sector in the past, the new administration seems to be directing significant time and resources towards tackling the issue. But to what end?

China’s gold seekers

Traditionally, small-scale gold mining in Ghana has been carried out by locals on their own land using hand-operated tools. These methods have slowly modernised and expanded, but the recent influx of foreign – predominantly Chinese – miners has accelerated this development. This is despite the fact Ghanaian law prohibits small-scale mining by non-citizens.

Chinese actors have invested substantial funds into mining, introduced more sophisticated technologies, and employed significant numbers of Chinese migrant workers as well as Ghanaians. Their use of heavy machinery has increased both extraction rates and environmental damage.

In the span of only a few years, Ghana has attracted an estimated 50,000 “gold seekers” from China, almost exclusively from Shanglin County in Guangxi province. This so-called “Shanglin gang” has settled in rural regions, creating predominantly Chinese mining communities. Across three of these key galamsey hubs, adverts and signs are in Mandarin while televisions in Chinese restaurants show Chinese soap operas.

The Chinese working community is believed to be highly organised and hierarchical, with one kingpin allegedly employing over 300 Chinese migrant workers together with a number of Ghanaians.

Many believe these communities to be hostile to locals, although recent government crackdowns appear to have encouraged co-operation. This is reflected by an increasing number of Ghanaians speaking fluent Mandarin.

Jobs and crime

Galamsey, and the informal communities it creates, is associated with a rise in crime and violence. Police have said that the number of armed robberies has risen in illegal mining areas, often with guns brought in by the Chinese to protect themselves.

Along with the growing presence of weaponry, the trafficking and use of narcotics has also increased. Another senior police official told the authors that a proportion of the cocaine and methamphetamine trafficked through Ghana is directed towards galamsey miners. He explained that workers use these drugs in order to “give them courage” and help survive long hours in dire conditions. Such drug use proliferates in informal and illegal gold mining camps in South America. As Ghana becomes a key narcotics trafficking transit state, patterns repeat themselves.

As profits and goods from galamsey enter the supply chain informally, there is also a high risk that proceeds will be diverted towards other crimes.

Moreover, galamsey can set in motion a vicious circle in terms of employment. Mining often occurs in cocoa farming regions and can lead to the seizure of land and environmental destruction. Both of these outcomes further erode the viability of agriculture, leading to the local population’s deepening dependence on illegal mining for income.

Seeking to ban metals mining, or even artisanal small-scale mining alone, thus ignores the key role the sector plays in providing livelihoods for the most vulnerable. This is especially the case in a country where unemployment amongst 15-24 year-olds stands at around 50%.

Lost revenues

Illegal mining also results in huge sums of lost revenue. In 2016 alone, an estimated $2.3 billion worth of gold left the shores of Ghana through galamsey. The illicit trade avoids taxation and the prevalence of foreign actors means that profits typically flow out of the country.

A number of sources suggest that gold is mostly smuggled to China and India. At the same time, illegally mined gold can easily make its way into the formal supply chain. Under Ghana’s regulations, gold dealers are not required by law to guarantee that their gold is legally mined. This means that even licensed brokers buy and sell gold without regard to its origin.

The loss of revenue to the state is particularly critical as the government is struggling to fund oversight mechanisms. Reducing illicit financial flows would greatly contribute to the state’s resources and its ability to deploy much-needed development initiatives.

Police collusion

In both 2006 and 2013, the government organised swoops on illegal gold miners. But while these raids resulted in the arrests of hundreds of Chinese miners, they only captured low-level workers who were easily replaceable and had no useful intelligence into broader operations.

In addition, the quick release of many of those detained has led to allegations of widespread police corruption. In one case in 2017, a Chinese national not only allegedly escaped from prison after being arrested, but soon had his car, which had been seized by police at the time of arrest, returned to him.

Local activists report collusion between district police and illegal miners. They suggest the police gain significant financial benefit from protecting, or turning a blind eye to, the industry. Many of the guns used by Chinese mining groups are also reportedly purchased from the police themselves.

Clamping down

These factors have led to growing clamours for the government to properly tackle galamsey and punish those involved. The media outlet Citi FM launched a #StopGalamseyNow campaign this April, while key national media houses jointly established the Media Coalition Against Galamsey.

These campaigns have thrust the issue onto the centre stage, and the government appears to be responding accordingly.

Previous administrations have been accused of tempering their resistance to galamsey due to China’s heavy investment in the country. But the current administration seems to be avoiding this pitfall.

Following arrests of illegal miners last month, Chinese officials called on the government to “guide the media to give an objective coverage on the illegal mining issue” and complained of “distorted or biased reports and stories on Chinese people”. It also suggested that any casualties incurred from the arrests would be “extremely harmful to the bilateral relations”.

Rather than placating China, however, Ghana’s Information Minister responded that “the Chinese threat or whatever does not bother me at all”. Media representatives confirmed to the authors that the government has not “guided” them to temper their reports. The tone of this response suggests a shift in attitudes.

As well as standing up more forcefully to China, the administration launched the five-year Multilateral Mining Integrated Project this March. This initiative seeks to direct small-scale miners towards areas where the presence of gold has been confirmed and where destruction caused by mining can be limited. The government also said it will use computer software to track earth-moving equipment used in the illicit activity and may consider using drones to monitor the activities of illegal gold miners.

The three-week ultimatum issued in April meanwhile led to over 500 excavators and 1,000 dredging machines being removed from illegal mining sites. This policy was also accompanied by an intense advocacy and engagement programme aimed at educating miners about the harmful effects of galamsey.

Finally, there are indications that legal enforcement against galamsey is on the rise too. Ghana’s Chief Justice recently designated 14 courts to hear illegal mining-related cases in a bid to expedite them. On 17 April, the vice-president announced that the government has suspended the issuance of small-scale mining licenses until galamsey is tackled.

Livelihoods and the law

In its approach, the government has fallen short of issuing a blanket ban on all metal mining activities, legal and illegal. El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt this strategy in March, and some groups in Ghana have called on the government to follow suit. But officials have made it clear that they are not considering such a move. Instead they say they will support small-scale miners seeking to operate within the law.

With gold mining accounting for around 8% of Ghana’s GDP, a blanket ban would significantly cut into government revenue. It would also be disastrous for those who rely on mining for their livelihoods; these individuals that are often the most vulnerable in society.

Nevertheless, the government’s clampdown on galamsey has affected official gold production rates. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources suggests this drop means the policies are working, recognising that a significant proportion of Ghana’s gold exports are illegally mined.

In order more comprehensively to assess the efficacy of the government’s new measures, a spokesperson for the Media Coalition Against Galamsey informed the authors that it is hiring an external consultant to compile a report. The spokesperson pointed out that the effects of actions such as the seizure of machinery are typically temporary. Instead of these figures, the spokesperson said that real progress must be measured by rates of land reclamation and levels of enforcements of the ban, aspects on which the report will focus.

Tackling galamsey

The problem of galamsey will be very difficult for Ghana to solve. From the centrality of actors from China, one of Ghana’s biggest trade partners; to the importance of small-scale mining in creating jobs in a country suffering from high youth unemployment; to the allegedly close relations between criminal networks and regional police; galamsey is deeply woven into many aspects of Ghana’s current reality.

Tackling the problem will therefore take a range of strategies that must be pursued comprehensively and in a long-term manner. This will be particularly tough for the NPP given that it has inherited a cash-strapped state and problems of endemic corruption.

The new administration has adopted an approach of pursuing those involved in illegal mining whilst also pushing people towards legal alternatives. Clamping down can often end up simply pushing the activity further into the illicit sphere, and whether Ghana can buck this trend will only be seen in the long run.

Nonetheless, the combination of energetic media attention, grassroots campaigns and a host of government policies perhaps provides the best hope for some time that the country can truly tackle galamsey – and, with it, the associated problems of rising crime, lost revenue and environmental destruction.

Edward Burrows and Lucia Bird are associates with the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, whose “GIFF: Illicit Financial Flows from Gold” Programme joint with Estelle Levin Ltd furthers the evidence basis and supports policy and programming to prevent criminal capture of artisanal gold mines.
