According to Lord Kenya, many Ghanaian artistes have become overly reliant on the dialect, diluting the authenticity of their craft. He described the patois used by local Reggae/Dancehall artistes as “disturbing to the ears.”

In a respectful yet firm rebuttal, Epixode clarified that while he occasionally uses patois, it is never an attempt to imitate Jamaicans.

“Me, I speak street patois,” he said. “I can’t get it 100% because I’m not Jamaican, and I’ve never claimed to be. But I express myself the way I know how.”

The award-winning artiste acknowledged Lord Kenya’s influence in Ghana’s music industry, particularly in stage performance, but expressed disappointment over the tone of the veteran’s comments.

“No disrespect to Lord Kenya, but patois comes in different levels. It would have been nice for someone with such a legacy to sit this one out, because it gives room for people to disrespect him.”

Epixode urged industry legends to support rather than criticise the current generation of artistes.

“Don’t trash our hard work. We are all building on the foundations they laid. We’re not trying to erase their legacy, we’re extending it.”

He also noted that music transcends language, stressing that vibe and longevity are more important than dialects.

Despite the disagreement, Epixode maintained that Lord Kenya remains one of his role models when it comes to performance, but insisted that the criticism “holds no water,” especially at a time when Ghanaian music is reaching international audiences in diverse ways.

I received countless threats after releasing ‘Wahala Dey’ – Epixode https://www.adomonline.com/i-received-countless-threats-after-releasing-wahala-dey-epixode/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 23:08:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2362949 Dancehall artiste, Epixode has revealed that he received countless threats after releasing his socio-political song, ‘Wahala Dey.’

According to him, the threats came from different quarters and were in the form of phone calls and physical attacks.

The musician said there were times he would be forced to abruptly end his stage performances because of the message the song conveyed.

Speaking to Amelley Djosu on Joy Prime’s Celeb Biz, the artiste said he had to keep a low profile for his own safety as well as that of his family.

“When we dropped ‘Wahala Dey’, I was getting threats and phone calls. There were events that I’m on stage and they are asking me to stop performing so I had to lay low for awhile. Because I may be the one in front but the family may suffer for what I’m doing. Even though it’s a lonely road to trot…Yes, I’ve lost a few things but also it has given me certain type of respect and power to be different from the rest of the artistes,” he said.

In 2019, the versatile musician released ‘Wahala Dey’, which touches on the state of Ghana’s economy.

The song questions Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s popular statement, ‘Ghana, your beloved country is free forever’.

The musician also uses the song to speak about the sale of government contracts and celebrities living beyond their means due to societal pressure and hardships in the economy.

The 2021 VGMA Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year also condemns churches for becoming business centres, rues the missing Takoradi girls, among others, as well as bribery and corruption that is engulfing the nation.

But these messages did not go down well with some political actors who chose to threaten the motive of the musician.

Epixode further indicated that he has made some enemies and has even lost deals as a result of the song.

But the musician is comforted to stand with ordinary people and speak truth to power.

The musician added that advocacy through music can feel solitary, but it grants him a distinct power that sets him apart.

He also said that he would not kowtow to the power that may go against the voice of the people.

I’m open to composing campaign song for political parties – Epixode https://www.adomonline.com/im-open-to-composing-campaign-song-for-political-parties-epixode/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 20:21:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2362804 Dancehall artiste, Epixode has expressed willingness to create campaign songs for any political party that approaches him.

According to the musician, he will not hesitate to take such an offer regardless of the polarised nature of Ghanaian politics.

However, Epixode said he will reserve the right to compose the song devoid of interference from the political party.

He indicated that, he would only engage in projects that promote and inspire hope in the Ghanaian populace “not necessarily politics”.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Celeb Biz, the dancehall artiste said; “There are disadvantages, but it is work. It’s only in this part of the world that celebrities are found wanted for making their political affiliations public. But if a political party comes to me for an anthem knowing that the message is positive, I would do it. Not to give the people hope and later be disappointed.”

Highlife is the sound of the future – Epixode https://www.adomonline.com/highlife-is-the-sound-of-the-future-epixode/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 16:18:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2291372 Ghanaian Reggae dancehall artist, Epixode says highlife is the sound of the future despite the Afrobeat trend in recent times.

In an interview with Joy News’ Becky, he indicated that there are numerous Ghanaian rhythms that have been slept on due to the adoption of afrobeat which seem to trending recently.

“There are five decades of Ghanaian catalog before afrobeat which have not been touched. If Ghana has about 600 rhythms, we have not scratched the surface yet.”

“So I believe highlife is the sound of the future,” he said.

The reggae artiste, who doubles as a creative director also mentioned his newly released single titled ‘stubborn soldier’, is out on all platforms.

Explaining the track, he said, “in life we are all soldiers, it takes a stubborn soldier to still stay relevant and it will take a stubborn soldier to win the battle, of which I am a stubborn soldier.”

Speaking at the private listening session of Nigerian singer, Patoranking’s ‘World Best’ album in Accra, the ‘Wahala Dey’ hit-maker revealed that he has an upcoming album to be released in December and urged his fans to also anticipate his upcoming tour in Mexico.

“Just be on the lookout, more African music coming out, I don’t want to say highlife but more indigenous,” the creative director said.

Nigerian musician, Patoranking, held an intimate listening session with music executives, media personnel, and fans in Ghana on Sunday, September 3.

It was a private listening session for his upcoming album ‘World Best’, which features artistes from across the world, including Ludacris, Ghana’s Gyakie, M.anifest, Beenie Man, Victony, among others.

Ghana’s music will sell more if we document it well – Epixode https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-music-will-sell-more-if-we-document-it-well-epixode/ Sun, 03 Sep 2023 09:06:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2290082 Reggae dancehall recording artist and creative director, Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo, better known as Epixode, has given a possible solution to marketing Ghanaian music across the world.

He says if the rhythm and sound of the songs composed by both veterans and new-generation artistes are properly documented, Ghana’s music will improve.

The musician attributed his statement to the recent sampling of Ghanaian music by some international artistes.

Epixode thinks these international singers get away with it because Ghana has had no adequate record of songs since time immemorial.

He said this in an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning with Roselyn Feli.

“They sample our songs every time. Like recently I heard a chronics on a Rock Stone’s rhythm, and I was like, Really?” But we don’t have a room to keep these catalogues to also help the next generation know that this is what makes our sound… well, we’re getting there if we document it well,” he said.

Although Epixode is a reggae dancehall artiste, he recently hopped into Ghana’s original music genre, highlife, by doing a rendition of his song ‘Atia’ with Kwabena Kwabena and other genres.

However, the highlife rendition surged higher than the others and got him a nomination in the Vodafone Ghana Music Award’s highlife song of the year category.

This makes him believe that highlife music is the best sound for the country’s creative industry in the future.

“I look at the longevity of my craft and who I want to be, and I’ve come to the realisation that it will get to a time when highlife will rule. It’s the sound of the future.

So if some melodies can’t go into reggae or dancehall, even if you watched the international market in Jamaica, they’re not doing straight dancehall; they’re even now tapping into the afro sound. We that we have it here, why don’t we do it more?”he quizzed.

Epixode is out with a new single for dancehall music lovers titled “Stubborn Souljah”.

He hinted at releasing an all-highlife music album by the end of 2023.

The versatile Ghanaian musician told the host Kwame Dadzie that a lot of the gigs come with benefits other than money.

“Eighty percent of the stuff, sometimes some of the negotiations you do, don’t come with money, relationships are even sometimes bigger than the money so looking at it from that perspective I will say I have even gained more things that are even bigger than I have charged,” he noted.

He, however, said that since he released the ‘Atia’ song, he has earned more money from his gigs than he did previously.

“Now they are putting respect to it that at least you have a team. At least, you need to step out clean,” he noted.

Epixode cites impersonation as reason he ‘sacked’ former manager  https://www.adomonline.com/epixode-cites-impersonation-as-reason-he-sacked-former-manager/ Sat, 15 Apr 2023 18:14:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2239776 Ghanaian artiste, Theophilus Naa Ardey Otoo popularly known as Epixode has disclosed why he parted ways with former manager Ezhibit.

On November 11, 2022, Epixode made the announcement of the cessation of their contract through his lawyers.

Speaking to Kwame Dadzie in an interview on Joy Prime he said because he was handling his page he used his page for business without his consent.

“Per what our lawyers wrote, there was a sort of impersonation and it was not good for our brand. Because of the kind of work we do, we actually engage with people so I happened to have businesses with people that I didn’t know about as Epixode, I didn’t think it is good for the brand,” he said.

Explaining further, he said “because he was handling my social media pages he had had businesses in the name of Epixode which the whole team didn’t know about and it was not looking good as time went on so we all had a very good understanding that we needed to move on.”

Epixode, however, noted that regardless of the unfortunate incident, Ezhibit played a good role while they worked together.

He said it wasn’t his sole decision but that of the entire team.

The release written by Epixode’s lawyers, Ankoma Mensah & Associates, in November 2022 Ezhitbit would no longer act as a manager, representative, or agent of Epixode, neither does he have anything to do with his brand.

They advised the public not to transact, discuss nor have anything to do with the former manager, relating to, affecting or having any bearing on Epixode’s brand.

Epixode, widely known in the dancehall space, got people amazed by his versatility while he took a foray into highlife and other genres.

After his success with the ‘Atia’ songs and its renditions, he is out with another highlife song titled ‘O’bra’ which features Santrofi band.

Epixode’s interview will air tomorrow (April 15, 2023) on Joy Prime at 3pm.

I’m eyeing VGMA Highlife Song of the Year category – Epixode https://www.adomonline.com/im-eyeing-vgma-highlife-song-of-the-year-category-epixode/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 13:57:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2230612 He rose to fame as a Reggae artiste but in the last few months, Epixode has been making waves with his Atia Highlife piece. The reigning VGMA Reggae Artiste of the Year said that is happening because he has mastered his craft in Highlife.

Atia is competing against AK Songstress’ My Proposal, Adina’s Adi Dedew, Kwesi Arthur’s Adom, Kelvyn Boy’s Downfall and Kofi Kinaata’s Have Mercy in the Highlife Song of the Year at this year’s Ghana Music Awards scheduled for the Grand Arena of Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Saturday, May 13.

Epixode told Graphic Showbiz his recent successes with Highlife music stemmed from continuous practice which is yielding fruits now.

“Although I have done several renditions of Atia, the Highlife version with Kwabena Kwabena went viral. I believe that happened because I worked very hard to master my craft and that is paying off now,” he said.

According to Epixode, who had three nominations in the categories of Reggae Artiste of the Year, Reggae Song of the Year and Best Highlife Song of Year, he would love to walk home with the Highlife Song of the Year category.

“Among all the three categories, I will be glad and honoured if I walk home with the Highlife Song of the Year category since that is what I am eyeing most. Atia is a very simple Highlife song and I’m happy for the recognition,” he told Graphic Showbiz.

Talking about Atia, he said he just decided to drop a Highlife piece and is very excited about the outcome.

“I was just trying my hands on a Highlife piece and it blew everywhere. I decided to do other genres to give people the chance to appreciate the song in different forms,” he said.

In an interview on Adom TV’s entertainment show, Ahosepe Xtra, he revealed that the painting on his face makes him who he is because it gives him power.

“It gives me some power because if it is not on me, then I am not Epixode that’s how I feel now and immediately I put it on me, it works,” he said.

“I will believe that it is added to whatever I have believed in trying to sink with my music and for people to regard who my personality or brand is,” he added.

According to Epixode, his facial paintings serve as a way of incorporating art into his music.

“I was trying to look out for something that will actually be unique with my brand and then I decided to do this since I am a painting artiste so it’s just a smart way of incorporating the art into the music,” he stated.

“It’s actually trying to sink my personality or where I come from with the kind of music I do,” he added.

Additionally, he explained what the three dots on his face means, saying: “The three dots on my face represent my previous album, trinity, which was telling different sides of me as an artiste.

“So I put these three dots there to represent my previous album and me having the background of believing in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” he noted.

“I think it’s from the home I was brought up in. Growing up, that fear has always been there in trying to go to school,” he noted.

Who’s going to be the head pastor? – Epixode asks govt on National Cathedral https://www.adomonline.com/whos-going-to-be-the-head-pastor-epixode-asks-govt-on-national-cathedral/ Sat, 18 Jun 2022 15:23:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2127619 Dancehall artiste Epixode has raised a thought-provoking question to government on the management of the yet-to-be-completed National Cathedral.

The interdenominational Christian cathedral has generated divided opinions, with majority going against the governmental project.

Making his stance known in an interview on Hitz FM Friday, Epixode said he is indifferent on the building of the cathedral, but his worry lies with it’s management.

“Who’s going to be the head pastor?” he quizzed while raising a case that it might defeat the purpose of religious unity, for which the cathedral is being built.

He believes just the Christian religion encapsulates various sects and each would want to be appropriately represented.

“There are churches everywhere. Billboards are full of churches; just the Kasoa stretch has like 800 billboards. We have so many things to worry about. Fix what needs to be fixed then we can have the lives to go to church,” he added.

In his opinion, there are “proper problems” the funding of the project can solve, like the blood-thirsty Tema motorway.

He suggested to the government for the huge tax payer’s money to be channeled into building or giving a facelift to monumental structures like the museums to preserve history for the coming generations.

Epixode to bring new twist in industry with loop music https://www.adomonline.com/epixode-to-bring-new-twist-in-industry-with-loop-music/ Fri, 17 Jun 2022 23:12:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2127569 Dancehall artiste Epixode is set to test his waters in other aspects of music as he hopes to pioneer loop music in the industry.

With the iteration of Afrobeats and Highlife music dominating Ghanaian airwaves, Epixode hopes to change the narrative and entertain fans with a one-of-a-kind genre.

Speaking exclusively on Hitz FM, he detailed the interesting choice of music and how he hopes to achieve his aim.

“I want to be a loop artiste so I’ve started working on that. People have started seeing me do something like that where you see me with gadgets on stage, just me performing without a band. It comes without a DJ or music or anything.

“So you will just have me and samples of my song and sometimes I get to create the song right on the spot without sample or anything. It could be a sound from a bottle, just to create music.”

Additionally, the Dancehall artiste touted the intent is to expand his music empire and be versatile; a trait he believes will set him apart from other musicians.

He hopes to leave a legacy in the music industry, for his name to forever be mentioned when quality music is in mention.

Epixode opens up on pressure as VGMA approaches https://www.adomonline.com/epixode-opens-up-on-pressure-as-vgma-approaches/ Sat, 12 Feb 2022 14:51:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2079085 Celebrated artiste, Epixode, has denied he is under pressure as the upcoming VGMA period approaches.

Ghanaians except much from Epixode who is the reigning Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year, especially to retain his title.

Epixode floored Samini, Ras Kuuku and new artistes Kaphun and Larruso to win the coveted award after eight years of trying.

In an interview, he disclosed his hopes of retaining his position to prove to Ghanaians that he truly deserves the award, to clear speculations that he won due to the absence of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.

But, the artiste said he is unfazed by the pressure, as he works at his own pace.

“There’s no pressure on me to retain the VGMA Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year I won last year,” he said.

However, he was quick to add that the only pressure he feels is a self-inflicted one on how to beat his personal track record.

“The only pressure on me is that I have to put it on myself in the sense that what I was able to do last year I should be able to double it up. As to say the pressure is coming from my colleagues I would say no because if you know me you’d realize that I do what I want to do and not what others expect me to do,” he said.
