In a New Year message to NPP members, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the party’s ultimate goal must be victory in 2028, noting that the stakes go beyond individual ambitions or internal competition.

He called on supporters to remain focused despite distractions, rumours, and perceived divisions within the party.

“To every NPP member listening to me, let us keep our eyes fixed on the prize. We must win 2028 for the sake of Ghana,” he said.

The former Vice President cautioned that escalating internal tensions could weaken the party’s chances of regaining power, emphasising that disunity serves only the interests of political opponents. He therefore urged members to avoid actions or rhetoric that could further fracture the party.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted that the ongoing flagbearership contest should be guided by ideas, vision, and policy direction rather than personal attacks, warning that negative campaigning within the party provides ammunition to opponents ahead of the 2028 polls.

According to him, a disciplined and issue-based contest would not only strengthen internal cohesion but also enhance the NPP’s appeal to the Ghanaian electorate as it positions itself for a return to government.

“We should not be distracted by the storms around us, the rumours, or the perceived divisions. Let us set aside anything that has the potential to divide our party further. This flagbearership contest should be about ideas and vision—not personal attacks. Engaging in anti-party acts only hands ammunition to our opponents,” he added.

Dr. Adutwum can win 2028 election for NPP – Gyataba https://www.adomonline.com/dr-adutwum-can-win-2028-election-for-npp-gyataba/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 16:33:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578818 Leader of tbe United Front Party, Nana Agyenim Boateng, popularly known as Gyataba, has tipped Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as the perfect candidate to win power for the NPP in the 2028 general election.

According to him, among the five aspirants vying for the NPP flagbearership, Dr. Adutwum, a former Education Minister, can easily sell himself to Ghanaians to win power.

In an exclusive interview with Adom News, Gyataba said Dr. Adutwum’s track record is unmatched and that if NPP delegates don’t base their decision on money and vote for him, the party will come back to power.

“Recently, I’ve heard Dr. Tandoh, who was employed by Dr. Adutwum in the Education Ministry, making false accusations on airwaves that Adutwum is a dictatorial leader. Dr. Tandoh, if you can’t be grateful to Adutwum, don’t disgrace him with false information,” he stated.

Gyataba urged Dr. Bawumia to advise his followers to focus on his capabilities rather than attacking others, as unity is crucial after the conference for the general election.

He referenced the Mike Oquaye report, which suggested that the NPP needs a candidate from the Ashanti region with humility, like J.A. Kufuor, and believes Dr. Adutwum fits this description.

Gyataba charged the NPP National Executive Council (NEC) to publish the Mike Oquaye report for public scrutiny and urged the party to consider Dr. Adutwum’s candidacy, given his potential to win power for the party.

Political parties are not only about winning elections – Prof Nelson Oppong https://www.adomonline.com/political-parties-are-not-only-about-winning-elections-prof-nelson-oppong/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 16:05:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566404 The Executive Director of the Africa Governance Centre, Prof Nelson Oppong, has urged political parties across Africa to look beyond winning elections and focus on building the nations in which they operate.

Prof Oppong made the remarks while addressing the opening session of the ongoing African Political Parties Summit 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This inaugural summit has brought together major political parties from across Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Latin America.

He stated, “Political parties are not only about winning elections; they are about building nations. We must turn poverty from a persistent challenge into an opportunity for health, prosperity, and shared development.”

Prof Oppong called for greater inclusivity in governance, emphasizing the need to move beyond restricting political participation to the political class and instead recognize everyday Africans as the foundation of political action.

Over the coming days, political leaders will brainstorm and develop strategies to advance Africa’s progress and development, aiming to better address the continent’s challenges.

Bawumia dominates but NDC supporters back Ken Agyapong in NPP race – Survey https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-dominates-but-ndc-supporters-back-ken-agyapong-in-npp-race-survey/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 11:02:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547215

A recent analysis by Africa Policy Lens has unveiled significant insights regarding the preferences of supporters within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their views on potential flagbearers for the 2028 general elections.

The report, released today, indicates that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains the frontrunner among NPP supporters for the party’s presidential candidacy in 2028.

The survey revealed that a remarkable 70.6% of NPP respondents expressed their support for Dr. Bawumia, showcasing strong loyalty from the party’s base.

In stark contrast, NPP stalwart Kennedy Agyapong trails behind, with 21.4% of the same group indicating their preference for him as the party’s candidate.

Figure 1: Preferred NPP flagbearer by respondent’s party affiliation (APL survey). Among NPP supporters, 70.6% favour Bawumia and 21.4% favour Agyapong; among NDC supporters, 48.4% favour Agyapong and 35.3% favour Bawumia (others/undecided omitted).

The report also offers a fascinating look at the opinions of members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Surprisingly, Kennedy Agyapong enjoys considerable popularity among NDC supporters, with nearly 48.4% backing him, while Dr. Bawumia receives support from 35.3% of NDC respondents.

The remaining participants remain undecided, illustrating a unique cross-party dynamic ahead of the next elections.

Reasons for Bawumia’s popularity

Supporters of Dr. Bawumia cited several compelling factors for their preference. Many believe he represents the NPP’s best chance to regain power in 2028.

His northern heritage is viewed as a strategic electoral asset for two primary reasons: it could enhance the NPP’s competitiveness in traditionally NDC-dominant regions and further project the party’s image as an inclusive, national entity.

Bawumia’s broad national appeal—evident in his lead across 12 out of 16 regions—reinforces his image as a unifying candidate with cross-regional support.

Figure 1: Preferred NPP flagbearer by respondent’s party affiliation (APL survey). Among NPP supporters, 70.6% favour Bawumia and 21.4% favour Agyapong; among NDC supporters, 48.4% favour Agyapong and 35.3% favour Bawumia (others/undecided omitted).

Regional support breakdown

Dr. Bawumia’s support spans a substantial portion of the nation, with his popularity particularly pronounced in NPP strongholds such as the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, as well as competitive areas like Greater Accra.

Conversely, Kennedy Agyapong leads in three regions: Central, Volta, and Western North, with the Ahafo Region showing an even divide in preferences.

The survey highlights Dr. Bawumia’s dominance in northern Ghana, where he is expected to secure significant support even among NDC voters.

He would carry the Northern, North East, Upper West, Upper East, and Savannah Regions, showcasing his cross-party appeal.

However, the findings also indicate that Dr. Bawumia faces challenges in traditional NDC strongholds such as Volta and parts of Western North—areas that will require strategic campaigning to ensure a nationwide victory in the upcoming elections.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the NPP’s internal dynamics, along with the sentiments of NDC supporters, will play a critical role in shaping the party’s strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections.

$150m needed to win presidential election in Ghana – CDD report https://www.adomonline.com/150m-needed-to-win-presidential-election-in-ghana-cdd-report/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 14:36:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525154 A new report by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has raised serious concerns about the rising cost of winning elections in Ghana, highlighting the potential threats to democratic governance and the country’s fight against corruption.

The report reveals that securing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections now costs approximately $150 million, along with an additional 10 million Ghanaian cedis.

This growing financial burden is linked to the increasing monetization of the electoral process, a trend that, according to CDD-Ghana, is fostering corruption and undermining accountability in public office.

Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Programmes at CDD-Ghana, expressed his alarm during a presentation to the Constitutional Review Committee.

He called for a shift towards electing leaders with integrity, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing public welfare to drive national development.

“We must begin electing leaders with integrity and orienting them towards the public interest, as this focus on public welfare also drives development,” Dr. Asante stated.

He also noted that political parties should not be left to regulate their internal processes independently, advocating for clear provisions to disqualify candidates who violate regulations and mandatory asset declarations for those running for office.

Dr. Asante stressed that improved oversight of political parties and the Electoral Commission is necessary to strengthen the electoral process.

His remarks were made at a meeting of the Constitutional Review Committee held over the weekend.

Jean Mensa proposes adoption of “simplified” e-voting system to reduce rejected ballots https://www.adomonline.com/jean-mensa-proposes-adoption-of-simplified-e-voting-system-to-reduce-rejected-ballots/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 10:52:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2514273 Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has proposed the adoption of a “simplified” e-voting system to address the persistent issue of invalid or rejected ballots in African elections.

She explained that using a direct recording device, where voters select their preferred candidate or party logo on a screen, would eliminate the traditional thumb-printing method, which often leads to errors.

Her proposal follows concerns over the excessive waste of ballot papers in Ghana’s general elections.

According to an audit by the Electoral Commission, between 1992 and 2020, one to three percent of votes in Ghana’s national elections were rejected. In the 2020 General Election, 2.33 percent of ballots were invalid, a figure that dropped slightly to 2.08 percent in the 2024 polls.

An in-depth analysis by the EC identified high voter illiteracy, voter dissatisfaction with candidates, and excessive caution by electoral officers as key factors contributing to rejected ballots.

Speaking at the Ninth Annual Continental Forum for Electoral Management Bodies in Accra on Wednesday, March 12, Jean Mensa expressed concern over the increasing rate of rejected ballots, warning that such trends could influence election outcomes. She urged electoral management bodies to analyze the complex factors leading to invalid votes and develop effective solutions.

“In the ever-evolving era of technology, it is about time that we as a continent begin to consider more effective and efficient mechanisms for voters to cast their ballots,” she stated.

The two-day Forum, hosted by Ghana’s Electoral Commission in collaboration with the African Union and the Association of African Election Authorities, has brought together over 40 representatives from electoral management bodies across Africa. Themed “All votes count: addressing the problem of invalid or rejected ballots in Africa,” the event aims to enhance the integrity of electoral processes and strengthen public trust in voting systems.

Jean Mensa also disclosed that discussions on adopting e-voting technology in Ghana have already begun. However, she assured stakeholders that the transition “will not be rushed.”

She further noted that the Forum would explore global best practices and innovative electoral systems to minimize rejected ballots. Additionally, she emphasized the need for public sensitization and comprehensive training for electoral officers to improve voting accuracy.

Former Chief Justice and Member of the Council of State, Madam Sophia Akuffo, echoed these concerns, stating that the rising number of rejected ballots poses a threat to Africa’s democracy.

“The democratic process of elections on our continent is at risk of being undermined by the increasing number of invalid or rejected ballots,” she cautioned.

She urged governments, electoral bodies, and stakeholders to renew efforts to safeguard public confidence in the electoral process.

Similarly, Mr. Fabio Bargiacchi, Founder and Executive Director of the European Centre for Electoral Support, emphasized the importance of collaboration among African election management bodies. He called for greater knowledge-sharing and experience exchange to strengthen democratic institutions and public trust in electoral systems.

Supporters of Nana Nkansah Boadu insist their candidate won the Council of State election in Ashanti https://www.adomonline.com/supporters-of-nana-nkansah-boadu-insist-their-candidate-won-the-council-of-state-election-in-ashanti/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 19:08:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503389 Some supporters of the Chief of Agric Nzema, Nana Nkansah Boadu, are anticipating their candidate will be declared winner of the Council of State election in the Ashanti Region.

A group of thugs believed to be aligned to the NDC’s Yaw Obimpeh disrupted the process which was at the sorting stage.

According to the campaign team of Nana Nkansah Boadu, the Electoral Commission counted majority of ballots cast in favor of their candidate before the process was disrupted.

But Joy News is unable to confirm whether the counting started after sorting the ballots.
Spokesperson, Lord Inusah Lansah, insists it was obvious their candidate won the majority of votes.

“If all delegates had cast their votes, 86 in total and Nana Nkansah Boadu was counted first, we were on the 47th vote when the chaotic scenes came in. It means that they had seen that Nana Nkansah Boadu had won the election authomatically,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, some assembly members have threatened to refuse the endorsement of the President’s nominees for the various MMDAs.

Mr. Lansah said, “they have started vetting people vying for MMDCE positions, they will come to meet us at the local level”.

“If this simple exercise could not be done, how do you expect us to sit and confirm your nominees”, he added.

The Council of State Election in the Ashanti Region ended abruptly after some thugs alleged to be linked to the ruling National Democratic Congress disrupted the process, tearing apart ballot papers.

The heavily-built men overpowered police officers to gain access to the Electoral Commission’s table, where the ballots were being sorted.

It is alleged the NDC supporters were not happy with the ballot sorting which was believed to have gone in favor of the NPPs Council of Elders member, Nana Nkansah Boadu.

The police team deployed for the election was led by the Ashanti Regional Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwah.

Some of the officers were stationed at the entrance of the residency of the Regional Coordinating Council where the election was held.

They screened and turned away persons who were not accredited to be at the premises.

It was the first point that our cameras caught the thugs who were challenging the authority of the police.

One of the 12 candidates for the election, Frederick Agyei, explained the EC restricted delegation of each of the candidates.

“They made it clear to us that each aspirant should come with four agents and they were the only people to be allowed to enter. My driver wasn’t allowed to enter and we accepted. I was surprised to see the thugs come in without accreditation”, he said.

The thugs were later seen at the inner perimeter where the election was held though they had no accreditation.

Former Municipal Chief Executive of Obuasi, Ofori Agyemang was seen with the thugs.

They approached the candidates’ tent to offer handshakes to the NDC regional Chairman Nana Akwasi and another candidate, Yaw Obimpeh, a former Chairman of the party.

It was at the sorting stage where these thugs disrupted the process. It is alleged the NDC former Chair, Yaw Obimpeh was losing the election leading to the disruption.

The men later followed the EC to forcibly take away the polling materials salvaged and destroyed them.

Leading candidates among the twelve are former Chairman of the NPP, Yaw Obimpeh and member NPP’s Council of Elders, Nana Nkansah Boadu.

Prior to the election, the process was characterized by partisan politics.

I’m no longer the Director of IT and Elections for NDC – Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/im-no-longer-the-director-of-it-and-elections-for-ndc-omane-boamah/ Tue, 28 Jan 2025 15:03:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2498024 Ghana’s Defence Minister-designate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has addressed concerns regarding his impartiality following his appointment, particularly in relation to his previous role as the Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28, Dr. Boamah made it clear that he had resigned from his position with the NDC after the 2024 elections, emphasising that his current role in government would not affect his impartiality.

Responding to questions about the potential conflict of interest, Dr. Boamah firmly reassured the Committee and Ghanaians that there was no cause for concern.

“No Ghanaian should have any fear about my impartiality. In fact, I can be the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and I will be impartial,” he stated. He stressed that he was committed to fairness and transparency in his new role, regardless of his political background.

Dr. Boamah elaborated on his previous responsibilities within the NDC, stating that he had only taken up the position for the party’s IT and Elections work in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.

“I took up the job of the NDC for IT and Elections, and after the elections, I told them my job was over,” he confirmed.

He asserted that his professional journey has always been about delivering on his roles and responsibilities and that his commitment to his new position would be no different.

In closing, Dr. Boamah reassured the public that his focus now lies entirely with his duties as Defence Minister-designate.

Ebi Bright petitions High Court over Tema Central election results https://www.adomonline.com/ebi-bright-petitions-high-court-over-tema-central-election-results/ Tue, 28 Jan 2025 06:11:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497677 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, Ebi Bright, has filed a petition at the High Court challenging the election of Charles Forson as Member of Parliament.

Ebi Bright argues that the results declared in favor of Charles Forson do not reflect the true outcome of the polls.

According to her petition, results from three polling stations were riddled with irregularities, undermining the credibility of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) declaration.

She claims that while the original pink sheets from the three polling stations, held by the EC, bore the names and signatures of the presiding officers, the duplicates provided to the NDC did not.

Furthermore, she alleges discrepancies in the total number of votes recorded on the original pink sheets, which do not align with the total valid votes or total votes cast.

Ebi Bright is requesting the court to invalidate the results from the three disputed polling stations and overturn Charles Forson’s election as MP.

She has also asked the court to refer to the earlier results, which excluded the disputed polling stations, where she was declared the winner.

Alternatively, she is seeking a court order for a re-run of elections in the three affected polling stations.

According to the EC, the elections are scheduled to take place in all regional capitals on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at venues to be determined by the Commission.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, the EC invited qualified persons interested in contesting the elections to submit their nomination forms, stating that candidates are required to provide two recent bust-sized photographs against a red background, clearly showing their full face and ears.

The Commission specified that nomination forms must be submitted to the Regional Directors of the respective regions between Tuesday, January 28, and Friday, January 31, 2025.

The EC further said that the nominations must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters in the Region and supported by 20 registered voters from the Region, adding that the candidate must consent to his nomination for election as a Member of the Council of State.

We’re still shocked by the results of the parliamentary elections – Justin Kodua [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/were-still-shocked-by-the-results-of-the-parliamentary-elections-justin-kodua-video/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 16:59:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493406 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has expressed shock and disbelief over the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

He recalled that one of the main concerns leading up to the 2020 elections was the party’s imposition of certain candidates on constituencies.

“We vowed not to allow such incidents to repeat themselves in the 2023/2024 primaries. You can attest that we held one of the most transparent and efficient parliamentary primaries, with no controversies afterward. The constituencies were given the chance to elect their preferred leaders for the 2024 elections,” he explained.

Kodua also revealed that an album validation committee was formed to ensure transparency and avoid misunderstandings among party members during the election.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show on Tuesday, January 14, Mr. Kodua stated that the party’s parliamentary candidates acknowledged the maximum support they had received, making the election process unprecedented in its smoothness.

“Some of us are still shocked by the outcome,” he said, emphasizing his confusion over how the party lost so many seats despite the transparent process in the primaries.

He further explained that he refrained from granting interviews after the election because he was still trying to understand the results. However, he expressed confidence in the committee set up to investigate the aftermath of the election. “The committee, led by Prof. Mike Oquaye, will probe the situation to uncover what really happened,” he added.

Kodua attributed the party’s poor performance to apathy that had infiltrated the party, which, he argued, affected both the presidential and parliamentary candidates.

While both parties had 137 MPs in the 8th Parliament, with one independent MP backing the NPP for a slight majority, the 9th Parliament has seen the NDC win 183 seats, with the NPP securing only 88 seats and four Independent MPs.

One parliamentary seat remains undecided due to an outstanding dispute, according to the Electoral Commission.

Afriyie, who previously served as the GFA’s Vice President, was the only candidate who sought to challenge Kurt Okraku for the presidency following the conclusion of Okraku’s first term.

However, Afriyie, who is a former Black Stars Management Committee chairman, was disqualified from the race before the elections took place.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Afriyie revealed that he had initially planned to seek an injunction to block the elections.

He shared that Okraku had arranged for Pinnick to visit Ghana and convince him to withdraw his plans.

“Kurt [Okraku] brought Amaju Pinnick to Ghana to speak to me to prevent me from placing an injunction on the elections. I wasn’t answering Kurt’s calls, but the sports minister, Mustapha Ussif also pleaded with me to meet Amaju,” Afriyie revealed.

After agreeing to the meeting, Afriyie reconsidered his approach.

“I met Amaju, and after considering his advice, I decided not to go to court. Instead, I chose to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS),” he explained.

“The people of Ghana have heard them [the NDC] and given them the mandate,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the party’s focus on self-assessment, learning from its mistakes, and uniting to regain the trust of the electorate.

“We are very positive that come 2028, Ghanaians will return us to office. We will take stock, identify where we went wrong, correct those mistakes, and rebuild as a united team,” he said.

The Majority Leader also pledged that the NPP would engage in responsible and constructive opposition.

“As a formidable minority, we will not resort to disruption, violence, or chaos. We will act within the confines of the law, focus on debating issues, and distinguish ourselves so that Ghanaians recognize the NPP as a credible and capable alternative,” he added.

EU praises Ghana’s peaceful elections, celebrates democratic milestone https://www.adomonline.com/eu-praises-ghanas-peaceful-elections-celebrates-democratic-milestone/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 20:40:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483105 Ghana has once again demonstrated its democratic credentials, earning praise from the European Union (EU) for the successful conduct of its recent elections.

Irchad Ramiandrasoa Razaaly, Ambassador of the European Union to Ghana, celebrated the nation’s vibrant democracy in a statement reflecting on the election process and its outcomes.

The elections, which culminated in the decisive victory of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, were marked by peaceful voting, professional administration, and a spirit of collaboration among stakeholders.

Ambassador Razaaly described the past weeks as “a great display of Ghana’s vibrant democracy” and commended the efforts of the Electoral Commission (EC), civil society, and all participants in ensuring a smooth process.

On election day, 88 diplomats from the EU, its Member States, Norway, and Switzerland observed proceedings at approximately 430 polling stations across 10 regions.

Ambassador Razaaly, who was stationed at the Jamestown polling centre in Accra, highlighted the punctuality of the voting process, the professionalism of polling staff, and the orderly conduct of voters. “Ayekoo Electoral Commission of Ghana and its Chair, Jean Mensa,” he said, acknowledging their role in upholding Ghana’s democratic standards.

The EU also worked closely with domestic institutions, contributing to the deployment of 4,000 domestic observers in collaboration with organisations such as IDEG, CODEO, WANEP, NCCE, NPC, and KAIPTC. This effort underscored the importance of local ownership in safeguarding electoral integrity.

The EU congratulated President-elect Mahama on his victory and expressed a commitment to deepening the EU-Ghana partnership under his leadership.

Ambassador Razaaly also extended commendations to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious concession, describing it as a bold and honourable step that reinforced Ghana’s democratic culture.

While acknowledging isolated incidents, the EU noted that the overall process was remarkable, with lessons from Ghana’s elections resonating beyond its borders.

Ambassador Razaaly shared an anecdote from African electoral experts who expressed admiration for Ghana’s best practices, indicating plans to replicate them in their own countries. “This is the best thing about democracy,” Razaaly remarked. “If you share it, it does not make you poorer. On the contrary.”

As Ghana transitions to a new administration, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country in areas of jobs, prosperity, peace, and sustainability. “Hand-in-hand towards a bright future for Ghana and all Ghanaians,” Razaaly concluded, expressing optimism for continued collaboration.

The successful elections have further cemented Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa, with its processes and practices serving as an inspiration to nations across the continent.

Outcome of 2024 election would have been different if…. – Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/outcome-of-2024-election-would-have-been-different-if-omane-boamah/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 10:21:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481886 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of Election Monitoring, Dr. Omane Boamah, has alleged collusion between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and certain officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) during the 2024 general elections.

He claims these efforts aimed to undermine the will of the Ghanaian people but were thwarted by the vigilance of the NDC.

Speaking after John Dramani Mahama’s decisive victory as President-elect, Dr. Boamah indicated that, the move could have altered the electoral outcome but for the NDC’s vigilance.

The former Communication Minister detailed the extensive measures taken by the NDC to protect the integrity of the elections.

“We were extremely vigilant. We deployed over 1,300 operatives to the Ashanti Region and strategically positioned others in key areas where we uncovered evidence of collusion between the NPP and some EC officials. Without these interventions, the outcome could have been different,” he stated.

Dr. Boamah highlighted a case involving the mysterious printing of over 500,000 unauthorised ballot papers, which necessitated the reprinting of ballots for the Eastern and Western regions.

“Who printed these ballots?” he questioned.

“As we speak, the individual responsible remains unidentified. This lack of accountability is unacceptable, and we demand answers.”

Dr. Boamah also criticised the EC for attempting to take credit for the successful conduct of the elections.

“The Commission should not congratulate itself for measures they only implemented under pressure from us. From reducing polling staff numbers to enforcing critical checks, these steps were not voluntary but a response to our persistent demands,” he said.

He pointed to the EC’s initial refusal to allow media access to Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings as an example of their lack of transparency.

“It was only after relentless pressure that they agreed. This was not proactive openness but forced compliance,” he remarked.

Dr. Boamah further disclosed his personal intervention to address concerns over mishandled election materials.

“I personally called [EC Deputy Chairman] Bossman Asare and insisted that unused pink sheets be properly crossed out to prevent misuse. Such basic protocols should not require external prompting,” he said.

Dr. Boamah expressed hope that these revelations would catalyse reforms within the EC to ensure it becomes an institution that truly prioritises the concerns of Ghanaians.

“The EC must evolve into a body that is fully transparent and accountable, not one that operates under external compulsion,” he concluded.

Focus on Mahama’s success, not personal ambitions – Ablakwa urges NDC members https://www.adomonline.com/focus-on-mahamas-success-not-personal-ambitions-ablakwa-urges-ndc-members/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 09:25:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481870 Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) eyeing the party’s 2028 presidential ticket to prioritize the success of President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s second administration.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, December 9, Mr Ablakwa cautioned that the NDC risks losing future elections if the party fails to rally behind Mahama’s leadership.

“Everyone in the NDC must understand that if we do not support President Mahama to succeed, their ambitions for 2028, 2033, or even 2036 will be mere illusions. We must put personal aspirations aside and concentrate on ensuring the fulfillment of our manifesto promises” he stated.

Mr Ablakwa stressed the importance of teamwork and dedication to delivering on the mandate given by Ghanaians.

“Our priority should be to support President Mahama with integrity, competence, and hard work. We must break our backs to ensure the Mahama/Jane Opoku-Agyemang administration is a resounding success,” he said.

He urged party members to remain focused on addressing the needs and concerns of the Ghanaian people, as outlined during campaign engagements.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that personal ambitions should take a back seat for the greater good of the NDC and the country.

We’ll resist any attempt to alter parliamentary elections – NPP https://www.adomonline.com/well-resist-any-attempt-to-alter-parliamentary-elections-npp/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 20:12:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481196 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has issued a stern warning against any attempts to manipulate the results of the parliamentary elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday evening, Kodua called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to ensure law and order at collation centers nationwide. He accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating chaos in constituencies where, according to him, the NPP had clearly emerged victorious.

“Data that led to our flagbearer’s concession this morning clearly shows that the NPP has won these constituencies. However, the NDC, unwilling to accept their losses, is desperately trying to pressure the Electoral Commission (EC) to alter the results,” he stated.

Kodua strongly condemned the violence reportedly perpetrated by NDC supporters and made it clear that the NPP would not tolerate any actions aimed at tampering with the election outcomes.

“We strongly denounce these attacks and serve notice that we will resist any attempts to alter the results of the parliamentary elections in these constituencies,” he declared.

Reiterating his call for swift action, Kodua reminded the IGP of his commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

“Mr. IGP, on two separate occasions, you assured political parties that you would ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. Your words were clear and unambiguous,” he said.

Kodua urged the IGP to safeguard the rights and safety of citizens at the collation centers and to prevent any forms of illegal intimidation. He also appealed to the leadership of the NDC to control their supporters and publicly condemn the acts of violence.

EC yet to receive results at National Collation Centre  https://www.adomonline.com/ec-yet-to-receive-results-at-national-collation-centre/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 14:28:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481098 The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that, as of 8:00 am on Sunday, December 8, 2024, no election results have been received at the National Collation Centre.

This was disclosed by the Director of Electoral Services, Mr. Benjamin Bano-Bioh, during a press briefing.

“For the information of the general public, as we speak, no results have been received at the National Collation Centre. And I repeat, no results have been received at the National Collation Centre,” Mr. Bano-Bioh emphasized.

According to the EC, results are currently trickling into the Regional Collation Centres, which has delayed their transmission to the national level.

The Commission attributed the delay to disruptions caused by supporters of the two major political parties, who were urged by their leaders to converge at constituency collation centres.

Overnight attacks on several collation centres resulted in damage to election materials, including ballot boxes, ballot papers, and Biometric Verification Devices, and posed threats to EC staff.

The EC reminded the public that only two agents per candidate are permitted at constituency and regional collation centres.

It called on political parties and their leaders to allow EC officials to carry out their duties without interference to facilitate the timely declaration of results.

The Commission assured Ghanaians that results will be published as they are received, region by region, to maintain transparency and public confidence.

CJID and DUBAWA intensify efforts to protect integrity of elections https://www.adomonline.com/cjid-and-dubawa-intensify-efforts-to-protect-integrity-of-elections/ Sat, 07 Dec 2024 08:34:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480424

As Ghana approaches its 2024 general elections, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and its fact-checking subsidiary, DUBAWA, are scaling up their initiatives to ensure a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process.

CJID has deployed 19 observers, fact-checkers, and OSINT analysts to monitor and verify information circulating ahead of the December polls. These personnel are working through the organization’s Media in National Elections (MiNE) initiative and verification campaigns, focusing on countering misinformation and disinformation that could undermine public trust in the electoral outcome.

In two newly released reports, CJID provides insights into citizens’ perceptions of the electoral environment as well as patterns and threats posed by misinformation and disinformation. Additionally, CJID’s Digital Technology, AI, and Information Disorder Analysis Centre (DAIDAC) has identified online trends threatening electoral integrity. In the latest article published by DUBAWA Ghana (“Agyapadie Circus: A Make-Believe Toxic Politico-Ethnic Document for Election”), DUBAWA found evidence of political propaganda spreading on social media ahead of the polls. DUBAWA Ghana has also successfully debunked AI-generated deepfake content circulating on social media platforms, further exposing the novel tactics used to manipulate public opinion.

To address these challenges, CJID is collaborating closely with the Ghana Fact-checking Coalition, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and tech partners, including META and TikTok. Three situation rooms have been established in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi, enabling real-time monitoring, rapid verification, and prompt responses to misleading claims that could sway voters or incite tension.

“Our goal is to strengthen trust, encourage informed participation, and ensure a peaceful electoral environment,” said Akintunde Babatunde, Director of Programs at CJID. “By working together, citizens and institutions can uphold democratic values and safeguard Ghana’s longstanding reputation as one of West Africa’s most stable democracies.”

With these coordinated efforts, CJID and its partners are poised to play a pivotal role in promoting electoral integrity, boosting voter confidence, and preserving the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process ahead of the pivotal 2024 elections.

Elections are won at the polling stations – EC https://www.adomonline.com/elections-are-won-at-the-polling-stations-ec/ Sat, 30 Nov 2024 11:04:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477557 The Electoral Commission (EC) has firmly dismissed claims that the upcoming December 7 general elections can be rigged.

According to the Commission, the robust systems and structures in place make it impossible for any individual to manipulate the polls.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, the EC’s Deputy Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, stated that elections are won at the polling stations.

He explained that ballot counting is conducted transparently at each polling station immediately after voting, in the presence of the public.

“When we had the peace pact, she (EC Chairperson) made it very clear – we’ve always known that elections are won at the polling stations, and that has not changed,” he said.

He reiterated that the results declared at the polling stations form the foundation for determining the winners of both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“Because the counting is done in the full glare of the public, whatever is counted there forms the basis,” he noted.

Dr. Asare encouraged Ghanaians to actively participate in the elections, assuring them that their votes would directly determine the persons who will be declared as winners.

“The constituency coalition center is just a matter of amalgamation. We are putting the figures together.

“But in reality, what takes place at the polling station is the basis of the declarations for the parliamentary and the presidential,” the Deputy EC Chair added.

At an event in Kumasi marking the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the federation’s leadership expressed concern over the risks PWDs face during election-related unrest, referencing incidents in Techiman South and Odododiodoo constituencies during the 2016 election.

Joseph Atsu, President of the Federation, and other members urged political stakeholders to ensure a peaceful environment, allowing PWDs to cast their votes without fear. A representative stated, “War and chaos affect everyone, but for us, it’s a matter of survival. We cannot run for our lives if trouble erupts.”

Francis Osei Nsiah, the Ashanti Region Electoral representative, reassured the Federation that PWDs would experience smooth voting and receive the protection they deserve during and after the election. The event reinforced the call for inclusive participation and the safeguarding of the rights of persons with disabilities during this critical period.

Police assure the media of their safety during the 2024 Elections https://www.adomonline.com/police-assure-the-media-of-their-safety-during-the-2024-elections/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 08:55:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2474126 The Ghana Police Service has assured the media of its commitment to their safety during the 2024 General Elections.

This assurance was highlighted during a stakeholder engagement in Accra on Wednesday, 20th November 2024, at the Police Headquarters, between the Police leadership, led by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, senior journalists, and news editors.

Addressing the meeting, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare emphasized that the media is a key stakeholder in this year’s elections and, as such, requires the protection and support of the Police to effectively fulfill its responsibilities as the fourth estate.

He further highlighted Ghana’s reputation as a leader in democratic practices, attributing this success to the effective collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media.

As part of the media security arrangements, the Police announced the introduction of liaison officers for all media houses nationwide to serve as direct links between the Police and media establishments.

This arrangement is aimed at addressing security concerns and enhancing the safety of all journalists across the country in their coverage of the general elections.

IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare seized the opportunity to call for collective efforts to make the upcoming elections a landmark in Ghana’s democratic history, one marked by peace, security, and order.

He further announced that a dedicated toll-free contact has been secured in collaboration with telecommunications companies, which will be made available to the public for sharing information with the Police as needed.

Acknowledging the media’s influential role in shaping public discourse, the IGP encouraged journalists to maintain the highest standards of accuracy in their election coverage while avoiding misinformation and disinformation that could undermine national stability.

The IGP expressed confidence that the measures put in place will enable media personnel to carry out their duties without fear, regardless of their location in covering this year’s election.

He encouraged all stakeholders to strengthen their commitment to showcasing Ghana as a model of democracy and stability during this year’s election.

‘EC fully ready for December 7 elections’ – Bossman Asare https://www.adomonline.com/ec-fully-ready-for-december-7-elections-bossman-asare/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 02:23:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473553 The Electoral Commission (EC) is not just ready but “fully ready” for the December 7 elections, according to Dr Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on November 19, Dr. Asare assured Ghanaians of the Commission’s preparedness, revealing that several critical milestones have been achieved well ahead of schedule.

“I wouldn’t only say we are ready, we are fully ready with 18 days to go,” Dr Asare declared.

“Because, as we speak now, there are a number of things that must be done, and we are pretty much ahead of schedule.

“So, we are fully persuaded that come December 2 for the special voting and December 7 for the main elections – in terms of presidential and parliamentary – we are fully ready.

“And I believe that the good people of this country are also very, very much ready for the election.”

He outlined key indicators of readiness, particularly regarding the printing and distribution of ballot papers.

“As we speak now, a chunk of them, almost over 50%, have gotten to the regional capitals under Regional Police care,” he said.

“Apart from that, the training of officials, which is very critical, has also started. We’ve done the national level. We are about to take off at the regional level, and after that, we’ll move on to the constituency level.”

Dr. Asare stated that the Commission’s detailed planning and swift execution had put them in a position where the elections could be held even earlier if necessary.

“If the elections were to be held next week, we would still be able to do it,” he stated confidently.

The EC, however, faced minor challenges in two regions – Ahafo and Volta – due to issues with ballot serial numbers.

Dr. Asare explained that these were being addressed.

“We announced last week that because of certain issues we identified with the serial numbers, we are going to have them printed again at another printing house.

“But we have strong evidence that this week, they should be able to finish for us to transport them to the various regions,” he said.

On the distribution of ballots, Dr. Asare detailed the progress made, revealing that nearly 90% of the work is already done.

“Almost about 80% of both the parliamentary and presidential ballot papers are in the regions. Unfortunately, when the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (Akua Donkor) passed on to glory, we had printed over 90% of the presidential ballots. So as soon as that embargo was lifted, many of them were able to finish in that same week,” he noted.

Dr Asare reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a seamless election process.

“We have a clear plan in place, and based on that, I can conveniently say that we are fully ready,” he said.

“The good people of Ghana can rest assured that the Electoral Commission is working around the clock to make December 7 a success.”

Ghana ranked among the best in Africa for quality of elections – EC touts https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-ranked-among-the-best-in-africa-for-quality-of-elections-ec-touts/ Fri, 15 Nov 2024 07:53:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2472151 The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has categorically dismissed allegations that public confidence in its operations is waning ahead of the December 7 general elections.

This statement follows a recent Afrobarometer report conducted by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), which raised concerns among a section of the Ghanaian public about the Commission’s impartiality.

The Afrobarometer report from CDD-Ghana suggested a perceived decline in trust in the EC’s independence.

The findings indicated that a significant portion of the population is increasingly skeptical about the Commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections without bias.

However, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC, has strongly refuted these claims.

In a recent media interview, Dr. Asare described the concerns as unfounded, affirming the EC’s unwavering commitment to delivering credible and transparent elections. He assured Ghanaians that the Commission remains resolute in maintaining electoral integrity.

In defending the EC’s credibility, Dr. Asare outlined several measures that have been implemented to strengthen the electoral process.

These initiatives include the deployment of advanced biometric systems to verify voters, rigorous training programs for polling staff, and the reinforcement of oversight mechanisms at all polling stations.

He stated that these steps are aimed at enhancing the transparency and reliability of the upcoming elections.

Dr. Asare also highlighted Ghana’s strong reputation within Africa for conducting high-quality elections.

“You talk about the quality of elections in Africa; Ghana is one of the best on the continent,” he stated, emphasizing the country’s consistent track record in managing democratic processes effectively.

He expressed pride in Ghana’s status as a leading example of electoral conduct on the continent.

Addressing the specific issue of a forensic audit raised in the Afrobarometer report, Dr. Asare recalled a public meeting held by the EC, which was broadcast nationally.

He noted that the meeting was intended to demonstrate the Commission’s transparency and reassured the public that the EC has “nothing to hide.”

Dr. Asare urged Ghanaians to remain confident in the EC’s abilities, highlighting the Commission’s history of successfully overseeing previous elections.

He called on the public to have faith in the EC’s capability to conduct a fair election, noting that past elections have been managed without significant controversies.

Dr. Asare appealed to the public to focus on the measures in place to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted transparently and credibly.

He reiterated that every vote would be accurately counted and faithfully reported, underscoring the EC’s commitment to upholding the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian electorate.

Afari-Gyan emphasizes the role of elections in achieving democracy https://www.adomonline.com/afari-gyan-emphasizes-the-role-of-elections-in-achieving-democracy/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 14:32:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2462552 Former Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has stressed the importance of elections as a crucial step in the journey toward achieving democracy.

Speaking at the Men’s Fellowship of The Ridge Church in Accra, Dr. Afari-Gyan explained that elections, governance, and democracy are interconnected, with democracy being the ultimate goal and elections and governance serving as the means to reach that destination.

Dr. Afari-Gyan noted that democracy is a continuous journey, not a fixed endpoint, stating, “The journey to democracy is always long, and we can even lose our way as we go along.”

He emphasised that elections provide an opportunity to choose new leaders when the old ones fail to take the nation on the right path.

The former Electoral Commissioner stressed that for an election to be deemed democratic, it must reflect the will of the people.

He defined a democratic election as one in which voters are pre-eminent and their valid votes are inviolable.

Dr. Afari-Gyan pointed out that Ghana’s multiparty democracy, currently dominated by the NPP and NDC, is key to maintaining competitive elections, but also called for credible election results as a basis for forming a legitimate government.

Dr. Afari-Gyan highlighted the importance of the election law, the role of technology in improving electoral processes, and the need for voters to ensure their votes count.

He cautioned against the dangers of vote-buying and corruption, warning that if votes don’t count, “corruption is likely to be the order of the day

The speech, delivered at the Ridge Church event, emphasized the need for all stakeholders—government, political parties, the police, and civil society—to work together to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Ghana.

2024 Elections can’t proceed without my inclusion on the ballot paper – Bernard Mornah https://www.adomonline.com/2024-elections-cant-proceed-without-my-inclusion-on-the-ballot-paper-bernard-mornah/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 14:54:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2456318 The 2024 Presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has made a bold declaration regarding the upcoming 2024 general elections in Ghana.

Speaking on the Prime Morning show on JoyPrime, he insisted that the Electoral Commission (EC) would be unable to proceed with the elections if his name is not included on the ballot.

The statement comes in the wake of the EC’s recent decision to disqualify Mr Mornah and ten others from the presidential race. Mr Mornah and his party are already in court challenging the decision.

Speaking to the host, Roselyn Felli on Wednesday, Mr Mornah expressed his firm conviction that the actions of the Commission to exclude him from the list of presidential candidates were not only unjust but also unconstitutional.

“I am telling you, without any hesitation, that the Electoral Commission cannot and must not proceed with these elections if I am not on the ballot paper. We are a legitimate political party, and I am a legitimate candidate who has met the requirements set forth by the Constitution of Ghana. Excluding us from the elections would be a travesty of democracy,” Mornah asserted.

He argued that the EC’s decision undermines the democratic process and disenfranchises a significant portion of the electorate, who deserve to have the PNC represented in the elections.

Bernard Mornah reiterated that his party had met all the constitutional requirements necessary for him to contest the election and accused the EC of selectively enforcing rules to the detriment of smaller political players, which according to him, does not only violate the principles of fairness but also threaten the credibility of the entire electoral process.

“Why should the Electoral Commission, which is supposed to be a neutral body, suddenly become the decider of which candidates the people should have the option of choosing? Our constitution guarantees the right of every Ghanaian to participate in free and fair elections, and by extension, it guarantees the right of voters to choose from all qualified candidates,” Mornah said .

“This is not just about Bernard Mornah or the PNC but about protecting the sanctity of our democratic process. If today, the EC can disqualify me without proper justification, then tomorrow it could be another candidate or another party. We must not allow our democracy to be undermined in this manner.”

Also, when asked how he intends to prevent the EC from proceeding with the election without his inclusion, the PNC flagbearer indicated that he and his party were exploring both legal and political avenues to address the situation.

He noted that the PNC’s legal action against the EC essentially injuncts them from progressing with any election-related activities until the issue is resolved.

For now, Mornah remains resolute, insisting that he will not be silenced and that the EC cannot move forward without addressing his concerns and he is not backing down from his fight to ensure his name is on the ballot.

Meanwhile, the EC has justified its decision to disqualify 11 aspirants saying it is ready for any legal action that may arise.

Religious leaders in Ashanti region defy rains to march for credible peaceful election https://www.adomonline.com/religious-leaders-in-ashanti-region-defy-rains-to-march-for-credible-peaceful-election/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 19:11:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2455556 Religious leaders in the Ashanti region defied a downpour Tuesday morning to embark on a peace march to clamour for a transparent peaceful election 2024.

They marched through the principal streets of Kumasi in the rains and later presented a petition to the Electoral Commission, urging a peaceful conduct of the polls.

Leaders of Christian, Islam and other faiths joined in a common call for the Electoral Commission to be fair and transparent but steadfast in the discharge of its duties ahead of the 2024 elections.

Convener of the Coalition of Muslim and Christian Clergy, Reverend Dr. Enoch Kwabena Nketiah, said the religious groups are prepared to stand by the Commission in prayers for a successful conduct of the election.

“We are expecting fairness and honesty in the upcoming elections. This coalition of Christians and Muslims can foster unity in the electoral process. We will continuously pray for the country as we head to the polls in December,” he said.

The clergy plans to extend their engagements to political parties.

Ashanti regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Francis Osei Nsiah, assured the Commission will play its part in ensuring credible elections.

“They came to encourage, strengthen and support us. They advised that we concentrate and execute our mandates. We have their petition and will forward same to Accra. We will follow the rules of the game and not deviate. This is an encouragement to the commission,” he said.

The assurance comes as the Electoral Commission held a historic Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting with political parties and other interest groups with media participation.

2024 polls: Akufo-Addo pledges free, fair, and transparent elections https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-akufo-addo-pledges-free-fair-and-transparent-elections/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 15:08:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2453287 President Akufo-Addo has assured the international community that the upcoming 2024 general elections in Ghana will be free, fair, and transparent.

Speaking at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democracy and underscored the country’s reputation as a beacon of democratic governance in Africa.

“As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this Assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana will be free, fair, and transparent,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“Ghanaians have demonstrated time and time again, in the last three decades, their strong attachment to democracy, which they will not permit to be undermined.”

Ghana’s democratic credentials have long been held in high regard, with the country consistently ranking as one of Africa’s most stable and peaceful democracies.

Since transitioning to multi-party democracy in 1992, Ghana has held eight successive peaceful elections, with power changing hands between political parties on multiple occasions.

This history of democratic stability has earned the West African nation praise from the international community, and the upcoming 2024 elections are expected to be a critical test of Ghana’s continued leadership in African democracy.

“The Electoral Commission, supported by Ghana’s security services, is well-equipped to ensure that the will of the Ghanaian people is respected,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He also highlighted the crucial role of the country’s democratic institutions in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. “Ghana has long been a beacon of democracy in Africa, and we intend to keep it that way.”

The President’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions in the region, with several West African countries experiencing military coups in recent years.

President Akufo-Addo expressed concern over the political instability in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where military juntas have overthrown democratically elected governments.

“Ongoing developments in West Africa are deeply troubling. These coups are stark reminders that democracy is, indeed, fragile and must be continually nurtured” he said.

In contrast, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Ghana remains resolute in its commitment to upholding democratic values and the rule of law.

“The people of Ghana, from every corner of the country, have made their voices clear: they will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the democratic process,” he said.

The President’s assurance of free and fair elections comes at a critical juncture, as Ghana prepares for what is expected to be a highly contested presidential election in 2024.

With President Akufo-Addo constitutionally limited to two terms, the election will mark the first time in 16 years that an incumbent president is not on the ballot.

This has raised the stakes for both major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as they compete to win the presidency.

Despite the political intensity surrounding the upcoming elections, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions and the will of the Ghanaian people.

“The 2024 elections will be proof of our enduring adherence to the rule of law, transparency, and the principles of democratic accountability that have guided our nation in recent decades,” he said.

The President’s remarks were met with approval from many quarters, with diplomats and international observers praising Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance.

“Ghana’s track record of peaceful elections and strong democratic institutions is an example for the rest of the continent,” said a senior UN official who attended the session.

“We are confident that the 2024 elections will continue this tradition of stability and transparency.”

As his presidency nears its conclusion, President Akufo-Addo’s legacy as a defender of democracy and good governance remains firmly intact.

Throughout his two terms in office, he has championed reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency, and upholding the rule of law.

Under his leadership, Ghana has maintained its status as one of Africa’s most vibrant democracies, with a strong commitment to human rights and political pluralism.

In closing his address to the General Assembly, President Akufo-Addo urged the international community to continue supporting efforts to promote peace, democracy, and development across Africa.

“We must recognize that the fight for peace goes beyond government actions. It is a fight for humanity itself,” he said.

With just months remaining in his presidency, President Akufo-Addo’s pledge of free, fair, and transparent elections in 2024 serves as a reaffirmation of Ghana’s enduring commitment to democracy, even in the face of regional challenges.

As the world watches, Ghana is poised to demonstrate, once again, that democratic governance remains the cornerstone of its national identity.

Allow forensic audit into voter register if you are not hiding anything – Clergy to EC https://www.adomonline.com/allow-forensic-audit-into-voter-register-if-you-are-not-hiding-anything-clergy-to-ec/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 17:41:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2452885 Head Pastor of Open Arms Ministries Chapel, Apostle Kofi Nkansah, has supported demands by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the voter register.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Apostle Nkansah urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow for a thorough audit of the register, stating that transparency and accountability are essential in the electoral process.

“If you are not hiding anything, why resist a forensic audit?” Apostle Nkansah quizzed.

“As a man of God, I believe that honesty and integrity are essential in all aspects of life, including our electoral process. A forensic audit will help to build trust and confidence in the system, and I urge the EC to cooperate with the NDC’s request.”

Apostle Nkansah’s comments come on the heels of the NDC’s allegations that the voter register is bloated and compromised, with multiple registrations and fake identities. The opposition party has been calling for a forensic audit to verify the authenticity of the register, but the EC has so far resisted the demand.

The Head Pastor of Open Arms Ministries Chapel emphasized that the integrity of the electoral process is crucial for the country’s democracy.

“As a nation, we must ensure that our elections are free, fair, and transparent. Any attempt to manipulate the system or hide behind secrecy will undermine our democracy and erode trust in our institutions,” he warned.

The controversy over the voter register has been a major talking point in recent weeks, with the NDC accusing the EC of attempting to rig the 2024 general elections.

The EC has denied the allegations, but the opposition party insists the register is compromised.

As the debate continues, Apostle Nkansah’s calls for transparency and accountability is likely to add pressure on the EC to reconsider its stance on the forensic audit.

According to the women’s group of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Precious Vessels of Virtue (PVV), women and children often bear the brunt of political instability and violence, hence the urge for political parties to promote peaceful and fair elections.

Director of PVV, Mercy Odotei, says as the general election approaches, her message serves as a timely reminder of the consequences of political conflict and the importance of safeguarding the interests of all citizens, especially the most vulnerable.

She was speaking at the 6th annual conference of the Precious Vessels of Virtue (PVV), held in Kumasi.

She urged politicians to prioritize the well-being of women and children during the electoral process to avoid any conflicts that could affect these vulnerable groups.

“We will keep praying for the nation, especially since this is an election year.

Ghana is all we have, and we urge politicians to avoid any actions that could threaten the peace of the country,” she said.

The PVV conference serves as a gathering for women across the regions to seek spiritual growth and engage in meaningful conversations about their role in society as Christians.

Galamsey: All seized excavators will be returned if NPP wins the elections – NAPO https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-all-seized-excavators-will-be-returned-if-npp-wins-the-elections-napo/ Wed, 11 Sep 2024 14:05:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2447320 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has assured that an NPP government would return all seized excavators confiscated during the fight against illegal mining.

Addressing the chiefs and residents of Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr Prempeh emphasised that the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to ban small-scale mining.

This pledge comes amid growing pressure for the government to halt small-scale mining to protect the environment, especially water bodies.

Dr. Prempeh reiterated the NPP’s stance on supporting small-scale mining, provided it is conducted responsibly, without causing environmental harm.

He stressed that, the party prefers regulating the sector over imposing outright bans.

“Small-scale mining helps families earn a living. Many miners supported the NDC in Wassa, but now they [the NDC] talk about using force against them. That must stop. We won’t resort to violence,” Dr. Prempeh said.

“We will return the seized excavators, allowing you to work peacefully and contribute to the community’s development. Dr. Bawumia will not collapse small-scale mining.”

He further clarified that, while certain harmful practices, such as using equipment on water bodies are unacceptable, those participating in the government’s community mining scheme would be allowed to continue their operations.

EC must apologise to Ghanaians for bloated voter’s register – NDC https://www.adomonline.com/ec-must-apologise-to-ghanaians-for-bloated-voters-register-ndc/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 09:02:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2443151 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to issue a public apology to Ghanaians over what they describe as a “bloated” voter register.

The NDC believes that inaccuracies in the register could jeopardize the integrity of the upcoming elections and potentially disenfranchise many eligible voters.

During a press conference in Accra on Monday, the EC took responsibility for the inflated voter register in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, attributing the issue to an error.

Previously, the NDC had accused the Commission of colluding with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to inflate the register by over 3,000 voters.

However, at the press conference, Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, clarified that the Commission had inadvertently included voter transfer lists from 2020 and 2023 in the current register, which resulted in the inflated figures.

But reacting to this on Accra based on Citi FM, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer said the EC can no longer be trusted and called for an external audit.

He also reiterated the demand for the Commission to apologize to Ghanaians.

“We said we don’t trust their internal investigation. We are calling for an external body to audit them because this EC cannot be trusted to handle even their own data. Listening to them, they migrated 2020 transfers into these current transfers by bloating it. They should apologize to Ghanaians,” Dr. Rashid-Computer stated.

During a recent sermon, the prophet warned that the country could witness an assassination attempt on a flagbearer, potentially leading to the postponement of the elections.

The prophet drew parallels between his prediction and the recent assassination attempt in the United States in Donald Trump’s case, suggesting that a similar event could occur in Ghana.

“Something terrible will happen,” Prophet Uche declared, “and it will cause the election to be postponed. A flagbearer will be shot, and the nation will be thrown into turmoil.”

This alarming prophecy comes at a time when tensions are already high as political parties intensify their campaigns.

The possibility of a violent incident disrupting the democratic process has raised fears among citizens, with many calling for increased security measures for all presidential candidates.

In addition to his prediction about the election, Prophet Uche also prophesied the emergence of a new disease, which he claims will be similar to the Coronavirus.

According to him, this new outbreak will lead to numerous deaths and have a devastating impact on the country.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves from the impending health crisis.

The prophet’s warnings have not gone unnoticed, with many Ghanaians expressing concern over the potential implications of his predictions.

While some dismiss his prophecies as fear-mongering, others believe that his words should be taken seriously and are calling on the authorities to take preventive measures.

How attackers could interfere in Ghana’s elections – Information Security expert https://www.adomonline.com/how-attackers-could-interfere-in-ghanas-elections-information-security-expert/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 15:37:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2437470 Data Privacy and Information Security specialist, Desmond Israel says even though voting in the upcoming general election will be done offline, the country is not immune to electoral interference.

According to him, cyber attackers can influence elections through disinformation and manipulation tactics.

He notes that while Ghana’s elections – voting, counting, and collation are 100% manual, cyber attackers can still target political campaign activities and exploit weaknesses in the infrastructure of political parties, particularly by focusing on key figures like presidential candidates.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Mr Israel outlined how attackers could penetrate candidates’ digital communications, including emails and social media accounts, to gather compromising information.

He compared these tactics to those used during the 2016 U.S. election, where troll factories were employed to manipulate public perceptions.

According to him, through the deployment of bots and by creating fake accounts, attackers can inflate a candidate’s perceived popularity on social media, giving the illusion of widespread support.

“An attacker can set up a troll factory like they did with the USA ahead of their 2016 election and make presidential candidates believe that you have a strong grassroots base. So the attacker would set up bots and make them represent as though you have a stronger grassroots base so this will add up to your numbers on social media and be making a lot of noise about you. So you will think you have grown in numbers when in actual fact it is dwindling, then they bring in the ‘kill’,” he explained.

Mr Israel warned that this false sense of popularity can be detrimental, especially when coupled with fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

“And once this gets in the picture, it destroys everything because now there is public outrage against you,” he stated.
This combination, he stressed, is one of the modus operandi that attackers can use to severely damage a candidate’s reputation just before an election, leading to unexpected losses.
“You may be the best candidate everybody would be rooting for, but a week to the election, you lost so much, and on the final day, it affects the outcome. And this can constitute election interference,” he stated.
