The operation, carried out on November 9, was made public by environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group, who shared details of the incident in a Facebook post.

According to Mr. Donkor, the suspect, described as a “notorious galamsey kingpin,” confronted the taskforce at the site while armed with a pistol.

In an attempt to evade arrest, he allegedly offered the officers a GH¢100,000 bribe, which they rejected.

The team proceeded with the operation, confiscating the cash and mining equipment before shutting down the illegal site.

Officials say the mining activities had severely polluted the Ayensu River, posing serious risks to nearby communities and aquatic life.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while environmental experts assess the full extent of the damage caused to the river and its surroundings.

Seized truckload of suspected Indian hemp arrives at Police HQ with half as sawdust  https://www.adomonline.com/seized-truckload-of-suspected-indian-hemp-arrives-at-police-hq-with-half-as-sawdust/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 06:31:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584624 A Hyundai 5-ton truck loaded with over 100 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has arrived at the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua with nearly half of its contents missing.

The vehicle, with registration number ER 760-23, was intercepted by a police patrol team on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the truck was later driven to the regional command under the instruction of Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah.

Service Driver Chief Inspector Daniel Addo delivered the truck on Wednesday, October 1.

However, officers at the command noted that the load had been tampered with. Many sacks had been replaced with sawdust, leaving the consignment partially full compared to what was initially seized.

The Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, had earlier declined to release the truck to the regional operations commander, insisting he would personally escort it. Despite this, a discrepancy was discovered upon arrival in Koforidua.

Meanwhile, the two suspects linked to the case, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, were absent when the truck reached the command. Reports suggest they escaped custody after being held at the Sekesua Police Station.

In a related twist, three police officers who intercepted the vehicle were detained briefly, handed over to the regional operations commander, and later held at the KTU Police Station before being released following the intervention of the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ebenezer Terlabi Okletey.

The officers have since been asked to provide official statements.

The development has stirred unease within the Eastern Regional Command, with some officers expressing frustration over what they describe as unfair treatment of colleagues who risked their lives in the operation.

E/R Minister assures GWCL of quality raw water amid clampdown on illegal mining https://www.adomonline.com/e-r-minister-assures-gwcl-of-quality-raw-water-amid-clampdown-on-illegal-mining/ Sun, 13 Apr 2025 13:23:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524742 The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, has announced that the regional security council is committed to safeguarding water bodies treated by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for public consumption.

In line with the government’s efforts to protect these vital resources and the surrounding forest cover, the security council has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining in the region.

As part of the operation, mining equipment such as excavators and washing machines have been seized.

“We are determined to keep our water clean so that GWCL will not face challenges in providing clean water for us,” Awatey said. “As a result, we’ve formed a taskforce to lead this clampdown, and within less than a week, we’ve impounded more than ten excavators belonging to illegal miners. Rest assured, we will ensure that these miners face the law.”

Awatey made these remarks during a visit to the regional office of GWCL and several facilities supplying water to the Koforidua Metropolis.

She commended the company’s management and staff for their dedication to providing potable water to residents, while urging stronger collaboration between GWCL and the Regional Coordinating Council.

The minister also challenged GWCL management to improve water accessibility, reliability, and quality. Her visit included stops at the Densuano Old Water Works and the Bukunor Plant, which treat water from the Densu River and surrounding mountains.

Ing. Paul Akpanya, Eastern Regional Chief Manager of GWCL, expressed his appreciation for the minister’s visit and provided an update on the company’s operations, including efforts to increase water production at the Nsawam Water Treatment Plant and plans to supply water to the new Somanya Government Hospital from the Akorley Booster Station.

8 illegal miners arrested, several mining equipment seized in Eastern Region operation https://www.adomonline.com/8-illegal-miners-arrested-several-mining-equipment-seized-in-eastern-region-operation/ Sun, 13 Apr 2025 13:10:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524735

The task force set up by the Eastern Regional Security Council to clamp down on illegal mining has apprehended eight illegal miners and impounded dozens of mining equipment across the Denkyembuor, Atiwa West, Fanteakwa, and Ayensuano districts.

The operation, which took place on Friday, was executed by a task force consisting of joint police and military officers from the Eastern Regional Police Command and the Southern Command.

Among the confiscated items were 24 excavator batteries, 16 pumping machines, 1 chainsaw machine, 3 monitors, 5 control boards, 3 single-barrel guns, 2 pump-action rifles, cartridges, and cash amounting to GHC 3,000.

In a media address after what she described as a successful operation, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, emphasized President John Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining.

“For the past few days, we’ve been working alongside the military and police across the Eastern Region to ensure that the mandate given by the president is upheld,” she said.

She pointed out the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining in the region. “Our waters are polluted, the environment is destroyed, pits are left uncovered, and our forests are being ravaged. It’s a hazard to our nation and the region,” she added. “In the short time our team has been on the ground, we’ve already seized several excavators.”

The regional minister highlighted that the operation was part of the government’s efforts to ensure clean raw water for the Ghana Water Company Limited, to support domestic water supply. “We’ve been working with water service providers, especially those responsible for water works, because access to clean water has become a major issue in our communities,” she said.

She assured the public that the task force would not be withdrawing anytime soon. “Our men are on the ground and they’re not leaving until we put a stop to illegal mining and restore the environment,” she said.

On the issue of the seized equipment, the minister assured the public that none of it would be returned to its owners. “The excavators are used to destroy the environment. If we leave them, the illegal miners will return to the forests. We will keep them until the president gives further instructions,” she stated.

She also reiterated that the suspects would be prosecuted. “We will allow the law to take its course. Whatever the law decides regarding their actions, we will respect that,” she concluded.

In a departure from previous governments’ approach, which involved burning seized excavators, Minister Awatey confirmed that the current administration would not adopt that strategy. “Our government will not burn any excavators. If the orders come to use them for work in the region, we can consider that,” she said.

Galamsey: 8 arrested in Eastern region, equipment seized https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-8-arrested-in-eastern-region-equipment-seized/ Sat, 12 Apr 2025 16:17:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524648 The taskforce set up by the Eastern Regional Security Council to clamp down on illegal mining has apprehended eight illegal miners and impounded dozens of mining equipment in the Denkyembuor, Atiwa West, Fanteakwa and Ayensuano districts.

The operation was carried out on Friday by the taskforce made up of joint police/ military officers from the Eastern regional police command and the Southern Command respectively.

The items confiscated include 24 excavator batteries, 16 pumping machines, a chainsaw,
3 monitors, 5 control boards, 3 single-barrelled guns, 2 pump-action rifles, cartridges and cash amounting to GHȼ3,000.

Addressing the media after what she describes as a successful exercise, the regional minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, emphasised President John Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining.

“For the past days, we have been combing the Eastern region with our military and police to make sure the mandate by the president is obeyed.”

“If you go around, our waters are so bad, the environment is destroyed, pits are uncovered, our forest is being destroyed. It is a hazard to our nation and the region, so for the few days our men have been on the ground and here you are with several excavators that have been seized from them,” she observed.

According to her, it is a result of the government’s decision to ensure that there is access to clean raw water for the Ghana Water Company Limited to supply for domestic use.

“For the past days, we’ve been to our service providers especially water works because we don’t have clean water and it’s become a problem for us in our communities.”

We are telling the people that the men are on the ground, they’re not leaving anytime soon until we stop the illegal mining and the environment is cleared,” she assured.

She further assured the public that none of the seized equipment would be released to their owners, stating that the suspects would be put before the law courts.

“They’re not disappearing because it is the excavators that are used to destroy the environment and anytime we leave it for the people, they are going back into the forest, we’re keeping it until the president directs us on what we should do with it.”

“We’re leaving them to the laws to take its own course, so whatever the law says about what they’ve done, we leave it to them,” she explained.

Unlike previous governments that resorted to the burning of excavators as a solution to illegal mining, the regional minister said “We have said that our government will not burn any excavator but if the orders come that we should use it to work in the region, we can use it.”

E/R Minister calls for investigation into drowning of two siblings https://www.adomonline.com/e-r-minister-calls-for-investigation-into-drowning-of-two-siblings/ Sat, 15 Mar 2025 07:11:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515043 The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate investigation into the tragic drowning of two young siblings in an exposed galamsey (illegal mining) pit.

The two children, Twenefuo Koranteng, 13, and Kwaku Antwi, 10, are alleged to have drowned while swimming in the pit, which had been left uncovered due to the miner’s failure to properly restore the land at Akyem Abompe in the Fanteakwa South district of the Eastern region.

The incident has left the Abompe community in shock as residents mourn the untimely deaths of the children.

According to reports, the siblings were swimming with two other children when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Mrs. Awatey expressed her deep condolences to the grieving families and emphasised the need for urgent action to prevent such occurrences in the future.

She called on the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and summon the owners of two suspected illegal mining sites for questioning.

“This situation is deeply regrettable and horrifying. An activity that is meant to provide employment and income has instead taken innocent lives and caused immeasurable pain for these families,” Mrs. Awatey said.

She described the tragedy as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities.

The Minister made it clear that any individuals or companies found to be operating mining sites illegally would face severe consequences, including the revocation of mining licenses.

She reiterated her commitment to cracking down on illegal mining in the region, calling on the Regional Mining Task Force to intensify efforts to address the issue.

“The law is clear on illegal mining, and those who violate it must be held accountable. The police have been directed to arrest and prosecute any illegal miners found breaching Ghana’s mining rules and regulations,” she said.

The exposed galamsey pits, which are often left uncovered after mining operations, have long posed a significant safety risk to nearby communities, with many children living near these sites, the danger of drowning or other accidents is ever-present.

This tragic incident is one in a series of fatalities linked to the dangerous effects of illegal mining, underscoring the urgent need for stronger enforcement of mining laws and better land reclamation practices.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of the two siblings, many are calling for more stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future, while urging mining companies and operators to prioritise safety and responsible practices in their operations.

Tension brews at EC’s Eastern Regional office [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/tension-brews-at-ecs-eastern-regional-office-video/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 16:38:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481572 There is brewing tension at the Eastern regional office of the Electoral Commission following a near brawl between New Patriotic Party(NPP) and National Democratic Congress(NDC) supporters.

The incident was triggered after a man (identity unknown) attempted to prevent the vehicle of the NDC Eastern Regional Chairman, Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor from entering the premises.

The confrontation did not go down well with the driver who engaged in a near fisticuffs with the man.

It took the intervention of the Police and some party executives of both sides to separate the two.

The confrontation did not end after the NDC chairman entered the EC office.

The NDC executives present at the EC office blamed the Nsawam Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh- Dompreh of being the cause of the tension.

They accused him of refusing to concede defeat to the the NDC candidate, Philibert Selorm Fummey in the hotly contested parliamentary primary, on Saturday.

Dissatisfied with the turn of events, one of the followers of Annoh- Dompreh threatened to beat the regional organizer of the NDC, Hackman Seidu Kabore if he dared confront the MP.

This led to a near free-for-all fight between supporters of both parties.

Once again, the police led by the regional commander, DCOP Emmanuel Twumasi Ankrah intervened.

The EC on Monday had called to resolve all parliamentary election results disputes in some constituencies after Saturday’s elections.

The affected constituencies are; Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Suhum, Fanteakwa North and Suhum constituencies.

Special voting for Western and Eastern regions come off today https://www.adomonline.com/special-voting-for-western-and-eastern-regions-come-off-today/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 05:43:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2479398 Special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions is being held today, December 5, following a postponement from the original date of December 2.

The Electoral Commission (EC) rescheduled the exercise after a leakage of ballot papers was detected in the two regions, prompting swift action to safeguard the credibility of the election process.

The EC ordered a recall and reprinting of the ballot papers for the affected regions. The Commission’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, announced this decision during an emergency news conference on Sunday, 1st December.

The recall was deemed necessary to ensure the voting process’s integrity before the 2024 General Election.

For this year’s general election, there are 328 special voting centres nationwide, accommodating 131,478 voters on the special voting list.

These include members of the security services, media personnel, and election officials, who vote ahead of the general populace to allow them to perform their duties on election day.

Speaking on Wednesday, 4th December, a Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Dr Bossman Asare, confirmed the Commission’s readiness for today’s special voting exercise in the Western and Eastern Regions.

He assured the public that all necessary preparations had been completed to ensure a smooth and transparent process in the two regions.

“The Electoral Commission is very much ready for the special voting tomorrow [Thursday]. All the materials that are required for the elections have been dispatched to the two regions, that is the Western Region and the Eastern Region.

“So we do expect that all those who are special voters in these two regions, regardless of where they are located now, will be able to make it to their special voting centres,” he said.

He further explained that there would be 33 voting centres in the Eastern Region and 17 in the Western Region, urging all registered special voters in these areas to participate in the process.

Dr Asare also emphasised that those who fail to vote on Thursday will not have the opportunity to do so on Saturday, 7 December.

Special voting: Eastern Region takes delivery of ballot papers https://www.adomonline.com/special-voting-eastern-region-takes-delivery-of-ballot-papers/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 14:31:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2479112 The Eastern Region has taken delivery of ballot papers for the Special Voting exercise, which is set for Thursday, December 5, ahead of the general elections slated for December 7, 2024.

The ballot papers arrived on Wednesday morning for onward distribution to all 33 constituencies in the region.

The materials, delivered under tight security from Koforidua Galloway, were inspected and sealed by party representatives.

About 12,000 voters, including security personnel, media, and EC staff, are set to participate in the election on Thursday.

The Electoral Commission(EC) postponed the Special Voting exercise in the Eastern and Western regions following a reported breach of security seals of the ballot papers, resulting in a recall and reprinting.

Following the conduct of the Special Voting in 14 out of the 16 regions on Monday, December 2, 2024, the EC has expressed satisfaction with the process.

The process was generally peaceful and incident-free but for few cases of arrest and altercation over ballot paper photography and vote-buying.

The calm atmosphere the EC believes set the tone for the general election on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has raised serious concerns over violations of electoral laws and has called for swift action from the Police.

For the 2024 general election, there are 328 special voting centres across the country and 131,478 voters on the special voting list.

The Electoral Commission has ordered a recall and reprinting of ballot papers for the Eastern and Western Regions after a leakage was detected with the initial ballot papers.

The Commission’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa announced this at an emergency news conference on Sunday, December 1.

According to the Commission, this has become necessary after it was informed by National Security that a single defaced paper was taken out of Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House.

The defaced paper was earmarked for destruction but unfortunately found its way out of the firm which has been working with the Commission since 1992.

The reprinting will be done by BuckPress and Innolink.

As a result, it announced the suspension of the special voting exercise which is due to start tomorrow, Monday, for the two regions whose ballot papers were printed by Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House.

The two regions will have their special voting on Thursday, December 5, before the general election on Saturday, December 7.

It says the security features of ballots for the two regions will be enhanced to differentiate them from the ones that have gone out.

The Commission said the total recall is to ensure the integrity of the election.

It says all parties and contestants in the election have been informed of the development and have agreed to the recall and reprinting.

Before this incident, the EC similarly reprinted ballot papers for Ahafo and the Volta Region due to some errors with the initial printing.

The Commission has also detected some shortfall in the ballot papers dispatched to some regions and is working to fix the anomaly.

Dr. Oliver-Kevor has declared that the NDC will win five additional seats currently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The NDC will win five more seats. Since His Excellency John Mahama’s tour, the NPP is having sleepless nights. They have also hit the ground, hoping to boost their fortunes. But with two weeks to the election, it is rather too late,” he stated.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Oliver-Kevor emphasized that the Eastern Region remains a swing region.

“The Eastern Region is technically a swing region, and nobody can say it belongs entirely to any party. The NDC has won the region before, and we can win it again,” he said.

Currently, the NDC holds eight parliamentary seats in the region, but Dr. Oliver-Kevor is convinced that this number will increase to 13.

He, however, did not disclose the specific five seats the NDC is targeting.

With about 12 days to the 2024 general election, both the NPP and the NDC have intensified their campaign activities, aiming either to Break the 8 for continuity or to reset Ghana’s governance.

He added that the directorate is still awaiting the results of 57 more samples sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

“A total of 11 cases have been confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. The region is expecting feedback from 57 more samples that are being worked on. The region is currently managing 103 suspected cases. So, I am sure many of you have the information that, initially, it was 9. Some tests were done, and two turned out to be positive,” he stated.

Dr Ofosu, however, assured the public of the readiness of the Ghana Health Service in combating the disease and urged people living in those districts to report to the nearest health facilities if they have symptoms of Dengue fever.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong urges Eastern Region to maintain its relevance in NPP https://www.adomonline.com/dr-bryan-acheampong-urges-eastern-region-to-maintain-its-relevance-in-npp/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 09:18:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421979 The Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for the Abetifi constituency in the Eastern Region, Dr Bryan Acheampong, held a significant engagement with members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Region on July, 14.

He emphasized the need for the region to intensify its efforts to remain a pivotal force in the party’s electoral fortunes.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Acheampong stressed the critical role of the Eastern Region in the NPP’s success.

“If the Eastern Region doesn’t work hard, our relevance in the electoral fortunes of the NPP will diminish,” he warned.

Dr. Acheampong also highlighted the exemplary efforts of the NPP’s flagbearer and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the northern regions of Ghana.

“The flagbearer, Vice President Bawumia, is working hard in the northern part of Ghana, and the people there have given him unprecedented support,” he noted, aiming to motivate the Eastern Region to match and exceed these efforts.

The day’s activities commenced with a courtesy call on the Akwamumanhene at Akwamufie, followed by a meeting with the Polling Station Coordination Team (PSCT) of 40 polling stations in Zone A at Anum.

Dr. Acheampong also visited the Anumhene’s Palace before meeting with the PSCT of 104 polling stations in Zone B at Akosombo, Moninger Presby Church.

Later, he engaged with volunteer groups at Akrade Presby Church, and the day concluded with a meeting with stakeholders, including former executives and assembly members, at the Constituency Party Office.

Throughout these sessions, Dr. Acheampong rallied the base with a clear and inspiring message, urging them to rise to the challenge and secure a decisive victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Voter registration: EC’s lazy approach cause of challenges – NDC https://www.adomonline.com/voter-registration-ecs-lazy-approach-cause-of-challenges-ndc/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:47:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2391773 Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns regarding the Electoral Commission’s handling of the limited registration exercise in the region.

They have described the EC’s approach as “a lazy man’s approach” and expressed worry over the inability of almost all constituencies to commence registration as scheduled on May 7.

In a press statement signed by NDC Regional Secretary, Jamal Konneh, said the exercise is slow in 95% of constituencies in the region.

“This is a clear sign of the incompetent technical team of the EC who are substandard and can’t manage a transparent and incident-free election process. It must be recalled how this same team managed our District Level elections last year with some districts having to postpone their elections to a later date,” the statement read.

The NDC urged the EC to adhere to the timetable, especially with the general election scheduled for December 7, 2024 is getting closer.

The NDC called on the Electoral Commission to mobilize technical resources and seek assistance from stakeholders to ensure a successful registration exercise.

Fire outbreaks in Eastern Region decline in 2023 https://www.adomonline.com/fire-outbreaks-in-eastern-region-decline-in-2023/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 07:44:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2343276 Annual fire outbreak statistics of the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in 2022/2023 show a 10.77 per cent decrease in fire outbreaks.

According to the report, there was a decrease in the number of fire outbreaks in the region from 650 cases in 2022 to 580 cases in 2023.

The record covered various categories of fire outbreaks, including domestic, industrial, vehicular, commercial, institutional, and bushfires.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO I) Jennifer N.Y. Quaye, the Eastern Regional Commander of the GNFS, outlined various reasons for the drop in fire incidents for 2023 as compared to 2022.

Ms. Quaye attributed, particularly, the decrease in cases of institutional and bushfires in 2023 to several factors, including increased efforts by the regional command in fire safety education.

However, she said there was an increase in domestic, industrial, and commercial fire outbreaks in 2023 compared to 2022, likely due to the failure of the public to adhere to best fire safety practices.

She said that the region was going to ramp up its fire safety education efforts at lorry stations, schools, churches, and mosques to enhance further decline.

It will also initiate a door-to-door education campaign and utilise various social media platforms to effectively communicate with a wide audience.

She added, “I call on the public to grant fire personnel an audience when the education commences to reduce fire outbreaks drastically.”

She also advised the public to engage qualified electricians to wire their buildings and avoid the use of inferior or fake cables.

“Install fire alarms, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers on your premises to ensure early detection of fires before they get out of hand,” she said.

The Regional Command assured the public of its readiness to respond to any emergency call within the mandate.

Water crisis hits 5 SHSs in Krobo over GWCL’s disconnection https://www.adomonline.com/water-crisis-hits-5-shss-in-krobo-over-gwcls-disconnection/ Wed, 10 Jan 2024 14:12:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2340309 Management and students at some five Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Krobo enclave are feeling the brunt of a disconnection exercise by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) over their indebtedness.

Yilo Krobo SHS, Anum Presby SHS, Anum Presby Vocational Institute, Boso Senior High Technical and Akro Senior High Technical School were all in November 2023, cut off in a nationwide disconnection exercise.

As schools resumed in 2024, academic activities are being interrupted as students have to queue for long hours to get water from a single borehole, while others trek in search of water.

Citi News reports that the situation is not only limited to these schools in the Krobo enclave but several schools in the region and beyond have also been affected with the heads being tight-lipped.

Expressing their frustrations to journalists, some said, “We have been experiencing this since August 2023, we have been through a lot. The pumping machine underground is spoilt, so sometimes we have to wake up at dawn to join this long queue. And sometimes we have to fetch water to the teachers’ bungalows.

“By the time we get to our classrooms, we are tired, and we can’t even concentrate, so we sleep in class. The time we have to learn, we use it to fetch water for the kitchen and the teachers. You can imagine the queue we will have to join when the first-year students come.”

A student of Akro Senior High Technical School also bemoaned, “The water problem in our school is affecting us negatively. At times, even going to school is a problem, especially, the girls we suffer a lot during our menses if there’s a shortage of water. Sometimes we have to go to town to get water, and even that affects our academics and studies.”

The students appealed to the government to assist the schools by providing water for them.

“We are appealing to the government to get us a borehole” the student said.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Joshua Tekpenor, expressed worry about the situation and called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to immediately intervene.

GUTA shuts down over 38 foreign retail shops https://www.adomonline.com/guta-shuts-down-over-38-foreign-retail-shops/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 07:38:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2315622 The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) in the Eastern region has executed an enforcement exercise to close more than 38 retail shops owned by foreigners, primarily dealing in mobile phones, in Koforidua.

This action is in response to what GUTA alleges is the government’s failure to fully enforce the Ghana Investment Promotion Act (Act 865), which prohibits foreigners from engaging in retail business in the country.

The Eastern Regional Vice Chairman of GUTA, Samuel Aikins, in an interview with the media said that the lack of enforcement of the GIPC law is having a detrimental impact on local businesses in the region and the country as a whole.

He pointed out that these foreigners often sold inferior products without considering the interests of consumers.

“Their activities are affecting the economy. Look at the soaring inflation, rapid depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, the collapse of the manufacturing sector, escalating shop rental costs, and damage to the export sector, among others,” he stated.

He cautioned foreigners engaged in retail trade in Koforidua and parts of the Eastern region to vacate the markets before the upcoming Christmas festivities to avert consequences.

He said the branch will go on a rampage to lock up the shops if the foreigners do not comply.

Mr Aikins, however, allayed fears that their action would lead to a shortage of goods on the market during the yuletide.

Clashes between GUTA and foreigners engaged in retail business continue to heighten diplomatic tension between Ghana and Nigeria whose citizens have flooded the local market engaging in retail business.

As a result, in 2021 joint communique signed between Ghana and Nigeria during the Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit seeks to address this problem.

This agreement exempted Nigerians from the $1 million minimum capital requirement as stipulated by the GIPC Act 2013, Act 865, which had previously barred them from participating in Ghana’s retail market.

The exemption was aimed at resolving a 25-year retail dispute between Ghana and Nigeria, and it was officially presented by Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to Nigeria’s House of Representatives following the summit.

Violent clash at Sakyikrom over reinstatement of alleged destooled Chief   https://www.adomonline.com/violent-clash-at-sakyikrom-over-reinstatement-of-alleged-destooled-chief/ Fri, 05 May 2023 13:18:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2246108 There was a near deadly clash at Sakyikrom, a community near Nsawam in the Eastern Region, over an attempt to reinstate a ‘destooled’ Chief, Nana Osae Duodu Anka IV, at the palace.

Nana Osae Duodu Anka IV said he was legitimately enstooled in 2013 but whilst abroad for medical treatment in 2020, he was informed by  Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu, that the Queen mother Nana Agyarkwabea, has enstooled a new Chief by name Odeefuor Sakyi Agyarkwa.

Upon return to the community after the COVID-19 pandemic, Nana Osae Anka IV petitioned the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs as well as the Regional Police Command for him to be restored as chief of Sakyikrom to have access to his property at the palace.

But the Queenmother insisted Nana Osae Duodu Anka IV was just a caretaker chief who signed MOU to step down when the substantive chief nominated and therefore blocked his access.

Armed police deployed by Nsawam Police Command stormed the community at dawn to provide security for the reoccupation of the palace by the alleged destooled Chief, however, angry youth and some residents in the community resisted in a fierce confrontation which nearly led to deadly violence.

It took the intervention of Mawerehene of Sakyikrom Nana Takyi Akomea to calm down tempers.

The process was botched as a result of the confrontation.

Addressing the aggrieved youth and section of the Buafi gate of the Ayoko Royal family at Sakyikrom palace, Mawerehene of Sakyikrom Nana Takyi Akomea urged the youth to remain calm and not to resort to violence amidst escalating tension.

The Mawerehene said clearly, the Ghana Police Service is misinformed on the Sakyikrom chieftaincy matters.

He said according to customs and traditions of the Ayoko Royal family Odeefuor Sakyi Agyarkwa is the legitimate chief of Sakyikrom, therefore, it is misleading for the Ghana Police Service to aid destooled Nana Osae Anka IV from Amma Tawia gate of the Ayoko Royal family to occupy the stool.

Nana Takyi Akomea explained to the media, “We had information yesterday that police personnel from Nsawam trooped to the palace to aid the installation of a new chief but this is an abomination to our tradition, it has never happened before.”

He explained that “There are three gates in the Ayoko Royal family here in Sakyikrom that’s the Buafi gate, Amma Tawiah gate and the Agyakwabea gate.”

So the Amma Tawiah gate has ended their tenure on the stool and is now the tenure of the Buafi gate so nothing should prevent them from handing over to the other gate.

The Mawerehene said the case is pending at the High Court for due legal process to be followed to resolve the impasse, therefore, called on IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare to call the Nsawam Police Command to order so they don’t engage in any illegality that will disturb the peace of Sakyikrom.

“The case is still pending at the High Court and I believe IGP will call his men to order and ensure that due process is followed. I also wish to call on the government of Ghana to intervene and bring finality to the chieftaincy dispute in Sakyikrom”.

Meanwhile, the aggrieved youth clad in black and red apparel with red hand bands chanting and singing war songs said they are poised to protect the Ayoko Royal stool, hence they will resist any attempt to install a new or reinstate the destooled chief whether at night or during the day.

NDC Chairman in high spirits ahead of primaries https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-chairman-in-high-spirits-ahead-of-primaries/ Tue, 02 May 2023 16:24:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2245055 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eastern Regional Chairman, Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor, has announced that all is set for the presidential and parliamentary elections on May 13.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam Show, he said the presidential and parliamentary primaries will be held in all constituencies except four.

He indicated that due to some reasons, the parliamentary elections for Ayensuano, Akwatia, Lower West Akyem, and Afram Plain South constituencies have been withheld.

According to him, this year’s primaries are the most successful in the party’s history as 29 out of 33 constituencies have the green light to elect parliamentary candidates for the 2024 polls.

“This is even one of the most successful primaries that we’ve had. This is the first time we’re having the primaries in 29 out of 33 at a go. Last four years, we had the primaries in three phases.

“I believe issues will be resolved for the rest of the four to be a part of the next batch. Some of the issues are for strategic reasons. Sometimes you have to wait and see what your opponent is also doing,” he said.

Dr Kevor said the delay in the named constituencies is not a plot to impose the sitting Members of Parliament on delegates.

He mentioned that although the NDC is determined to win more seats in the Eastern Region its primary focus is to retain its current seats.

He added that the party is applying different strategies to retain its seats and win more seats from the governing New Patriotic Party.

“We need to keep the seats we have and to keep the seats we need to have a united front, you need your structures to be very grounded. Once you have kept your seats then you will need other seats from your opponent’s side. Those ones too you need a different strategy.

“You don’t treat all constituencies as equals. The dynamics are different for every constituency so if you apply the general rule for every constituency, you may end up having issues in some of the constituencies and lose some of your seats in the process,” he added.

The driver of the truck with the registration GT-5831-15, was nowhere to be found when passersby rushed forward to the vehicle loaded with gravel, for a rescue attempt.

Speaking to some eyewitnesses, which included the former Assembly Man of the area, Mr Prince Ofori, the driver signalled people to move from the street before the crash.

“I am sure his break seized. He was warning people to move away before he went off the road smashing into the structures by the roadside. Luckily no one was hurt because he signalled,” Mr Ofori said.

GES reviews education in Eastern Region https://www.adomonline.com/ges-reviews-education-in-eastern-region/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 13:54:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208268 The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has concluded the regional education review forum in Koforidua for 2022, with recommendations to overcome future challenges.

Regional departmental heads and representatives of the Ghana Police Service, teacher unions, traditional and religious organisations were present.

The Head of Inspectorate of GES, Eastern Region, Mr Eric Sikatse said the meeting was to examine educational activities and collect inputs for integration into the Education Strategic Plan for 2023 to improve learning outcomes.

He said the GES Headquarters, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), requested that a similar review forum be held nationwide.

The Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong lauded the directorate for organising the forum – saying “Education provides the foundation on which much of our economic and social well-being is built and translates a poor economy into a rich economy by increasing the value and efficiency of human capital.”

The Sustainable Development Goal Four required the government to ensure equitable education and promote lifelong opportunities for all.

“The Government is on track to meeting this target with the implementation of the Free Senior High School Policy,” he said.

“However, ensuring quality education delivery is not only about access but also the quality of delivery.”

The Eastern Regional Planning Officer, GES, Mr Felix Asiedu Koranteng in a presentation on the state of education in the region, said it increased supervision to improve teaching and learning and introduced comprehensive school self-evaluation processes to help identify weaknesses and strengths in designing improvement plans for remediation.

The region organised science and mathematics quizzes for five districts, established a gender club, workshop for science and mathematics teachers, a girls’ camp, and after-school classes in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Mr Koranteng mentioned the major challenges to include difficulty in getting teachers to accept postings to hard-to-reach areas; lack of accommodation and office space for newly created districts; encroachment on school lands; and lack of a depot for the Regional Education Directorate to receive supplies.

The Budget Officer, Eastern Region, Mr Anim Humphrey, said the GES in collaboration with the Ministry of Education had initiated the Education Accountability System to ensure efficient resource deployment and management for effective pre-tertiary education delivery.

The participants suggested that to address the issues raised, teachers’ quarters must be built at hard-to-reach areas, in addition to incentives for newly posted teachers to improve service delivery.

Abondoned infrastructure projects in schools should be examined for continuation or reconstruction to bridge the structural deficit.

In response to encroachment on school property, Nana Twumasi Dankwa, Gyasehene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, advised the affected schools to erect fence walls or report the trespassers for prosecution at the courts.

NDC elections: Former Chairman calls for annulment of Eastern Regional elections https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-elections-former-chairman-calls-for-annulment-of-eastern-regional-elections/ Tue, 03 Jan 2023 20:44:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2201820 It appears the legal battles bedeviling the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are far from over as another suit challenging the Regional elections in the Eastern region surfaces.

Former Regional Chairman, John Owusu-Amankrah, popularly known as JOWAK, is praying the court to annul the regional elections.

He argued that, the constitution of the NDC was grossly contravened in the lead up to the said regional conference held on 17th December 2022.

JOWAK said per the party’s constitution, it is the Regional Chairman that convenes the regional conference but he was deliberately sidelined, and the elections were held without his participation or consent, thereby violating his constitutional mandate as Chairman of the party.

Mr Owusu-Amankrah also noted in his suit that prior to the regional conference, there were some challenges with some Constituencies, venue for the conference and a host of other issues. According to him, all these matters were being adjudicated at various levels of the party.

The plaintiff also noted that, with all these issues and the outcome of the Youth Conference on 11th December 2022, where Atiwa East delegates were not allowed to vote, he was served a suit filed by one Albert Bonsu of Atiwa East which seemed to injunct the intended Regional Conference. He notes further that after consultation with some party officer and lawyers, it was agreed that the elections could not hold due to the injunction application and therefore issued a notice calling the Regional Conference off.

However, JOWAK said the party ignored it and held the elections on his blind side on 19th December 2022.

He is, therefore, asking the court to annul the elections and call for fresh elections to be conducted as it is against public policy for him to be made to suffer only because he chose to obey the laws of Ghana.

Meanwhile, the Koforidua High Court will make a determination of case at its next seating.

1D1F: 17 completed, 16 under construction in Eastern Region – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/1d1f-17-completed-16-under-construction-in-eastern-region-akufo-addo/ Sat, 22 Oct 2022 17:48:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2174847 President Nana Akufo-Addo has backed the One-District, One-Factory (1D1F) initiative, under the broader industrialisation agenda of government, as a basis for developing a home-grown infrastructure that is capable of withstanding the uncertainties of exogenous shocks to the Ghanaian economy.

In this regard, the President pointed out that the Eastern Region, alone, has seen 17 completed 1D1F enterprises, with another 16 at various stages of completion and soon to be commissioned, as well as another four at the project conception stage.

The performance and success of the completed 1D1F projects across the country, with regards to minimizing unemployment and shoring local production, has thus far, been a clear indication of Akufo-Addo’s long-held belief that Ghana’s path towards self-reliance is largely premised on the country’s determination to industrialise.

1D1F: 17 completed, 16 under construction in Eastern Region – Akufo-Addo

According to the President who began a three-day tour of the Eastern Region on Friday, October 21, 2021, “the whole purpose of the policy means having factories and enterprises here in Ghana, which will substitute the ones that are coming from abroad. That is the whole purpose of the policy. Instead of importing XYZ, you’re going to have them made here.”

He added that “when we said we wanted to implement 1D1F and certain strategic industrial policies, we were told it couldn’t be done, but today everyone is talking about how important it is for the Ghanaian economy to lessen its dependence on foreign goods and foreign services.

1D1F: 17 completed, 16 under construction in Eastern Region – Akufo-Addo

“Now people are beginning to understand that indeed we had the foresight, we knew exactly what we needed to do to bring substantial progress, real progress not intermittent progress, but substantial progress which is going to be strong and resilient. That is what I’ve noticed is ongoing,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo indicated further that, “by the time we are through, then the commitment of a 1D1F would have been established. And we can only strengthen the industrial development of the country, which is very important to note that foreign import dependence will not inure to our growth. We have the panacea, the solution, and Government is working towards it.

1D1F: 17 completed, 16 under construction in Eastern Region – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo’s 1D1F initiative is meant to change the nature of Ghana’s economy from one which is dependent on import and export of raw materials to one which is focused on manufacturing, value addition and export of processed goods from raw materials that are largely found in the districts across the country.

Thus far, the 1D1F initiative, which has seen the ongoing construction of two hundred and ninety-six (296) factories across the country, of which 125 have been completed, is part of the foundation on which the Akufo-Addo government is building a comprehensive industrialization programme, inspired by the development of strategic anchor industries, such as the emerging automotive industry and the co-ordinated exploitation for the entire domestic value addition of our bauxite and iron ore resources.

“I am hopeful that, by the end of my term, the full complement of 296 factories will be in operation to help provide quality domestic alternatives to the consumption needs of Ghanaians and reduce substantially our dependence on imports.

“We do not only account for the youth as labour in the 1D1F programme, but also as managers and owners. Indeed, fifty-eight (58) of these factories are wholly owned by young people who have received direct government support”, he added.

GWCL shuts down 2 major treatment plants in Eastern region https://www.adomonline.com/gwcl-shuts-down-2-major-treatment-plants-in-eastern-region/ Mon, 03 Oct 2022 16:06:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2168278 The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has shut down its two main treatment plants in the Eastern Region following the weekend’s flooding.

The two major water processing plants are located at Akyem Oda and Koforidua Densu and were flooded over the weekend making it impossible for officials of the Ghana Water Company to access the place.

Public Relations Officer for the GWCL in the Eastern Region, Kwadwo Daase told JoyNews’ Maxwell Kudekor that the shutdown is to prevent further consequences on the treatment plants due to the flood.

“Because of the heavy rains and the resultant flooding situation in our plant at Akyem Oda and the Densu old plant, because of that we have shut down these two plants to even safeguard serious consequences,” he said.

Flooding situation at one of the treatment plants in the Region.

According to the GWCL, the situation will lead to water shortages in these areas and their surrounding environment.

But the Company says it is assessing the situation to further take action and resolve the challenge.

“When you go to Akyem Oda, that plant serves Akyem Oda and its environs and then to Kade so it means we are not producing and will result in water shortages in these areas.

“This Koforidua plant has also suffered a similar fate and now we are waiting for the flood water levels to recede for us to go in there and do the technical appraisal and auditing of the situation to access the impact of the water,” he added.

Meanwhile, the three days continuous downpour during the weekend displaced several residents and property.

Some other areas which submerged were the regional office of the Electricity Company, Akwadum Zongo, Abrewa Nkwanta, Effiduase, and Asokore, among others.

Vals Day: AIDS Commission to distribute condoms https://www.adomonline.com/vals-day-aids-commission-to-distribute-condoms/ Mon, 14 Feb 2022 11:55:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2079660 The Eastern Regional Office of Ghana AIDS Commission says it will reactivate the distribution of condoms to non-traditional condom sale outlets for the Valentine’s Day celebration.

The move by the commission is to ensure availability and enhance accessibility to condoms for protection by people who may opt to have sexual intercourse during the day, to reduce the risk of HIV infections.

“We as an organization, one of our condom distribution strategies is to make sure that condoms are made available for all the people.

“One of the key strategies we have been using over the years under our NSP 2016 to 2020 was that we used non-traditional condom sales outlets to get condoms,” the Commission said

Speaking to Starr News, the Acting Eastern Regional Technical Coordinator of the Technical Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Ebenezer Appiah Agyekum Abrokwah, said Valentine’s Day is known for merrymaking and expression of love which is mostly associated with increased sexual activities, therefore, the Commission will additionally deepen sensitisation on HIV.

“Currently, the Eastern region has a prevalence of 2.2 which means that if you take a thousand people aged 15 to 49 you will get about 22 of them being HIV positive and that is our estimation for 2020.

“What that means is that HIV is still an issue in the Eastern region and we are still working hard with all the key stakeholders, the Ghana Health Service, NGO’s and all the government agencies, district Assemblies and other departments to just make sure that people become aware the HIV is still an issue so that people are able to take care of themselves, protect themselves, get tested and if they are testing positive then they are being enrolled on antiretroviral therapy”.

Mr Agyekum Abrokwa said the condom distribution and awareness creation drive will be done across all the 33 districts and Municipalities in the region.

“When we talk about the Eastern region, in all the 33 districts, they all have their own HIV prevalence according to the data and so one of the key things for valentine day is that we have an HIV sensitisation exercise with national service personnel on Monday and we will be educating, and for instance last year we visited all the hotspot, pups and bars and we gave them condoms, the idea is for people to have access to condoms so that they can protect themselves if they decide to have sex,” Ebenezer Appiah Agyekum Abrokwa said.

He continued “We will also be focusing on the youth making sure that senior high school students are also getting some education via media and any other platforms available for us so basically the main aim is to create awareness, encourage people to know their status, and also encourage people to protect themselves and if they do all these then it means that we are breaking the chain of transmission of HIV.”

According to data, people living with HIV in Eastern Region are 47,8166.

Eastern Region recorded 2,128 new HIV infections during the year 2020 under review.

Lower Manya Krobo had the highest new infection in the 2020 report with 122 cases, Asuogyaman 119, New Juaben South 113, Yilo Krobo 107, Kwaebibirim 91, West Akyem 90, Upper Manya Krobo 87, Suhum 82, Abuakwa North 78, and Afram Plains South 73.

Out of the cumulative number of 47,8166 people living with HIV in the region, 30,538 were accessing the antiretroviral drugs. The antiretroviral coverage in the region for all ages is 58%.

The Commission blames the situation on false claims by herbalists and Prophets that they have a cure for the virus which attracts some people living with HIV to abandon ART for their concoction.

The commission urged the public particularly the youth to test and know their HIV status early to be put on ART to help suppress the viral load to prevent AIDS.

COVID-19: 364,832 vaccines administered in Eastern Region https://www.adomonline.com/covid-19-364832-vaccines-administered-in-eastern-region/ Sun, 12 Dec 2021 19:43:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2057272 Eastern Region has as of December 6 administered 364,832 doses of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines.

Out of the figure, a total of 314,346 have received at least one dose of the vaccine while 50,486 persons constituting 2.4 percent of the targeted population of 2,134,787 have been fully vaccinated.

The Eastern Regional Health Director, Dr Wilfred Ofosu, made this known at a press briefing in Koforidua, the regional capital last Tuesday while giving an update of the development on the COVID-19 pandemic in the region.

According to Dr Ofosu, within the same period, the region recorded 6,605 confirmed cases of COVID-19 out of which 6,466 constituting 97 per cent have recovered and discharged from healthcare facilities in the region.

He also told the gathering that unfortunately 136 persons who contracted the disease had died.

The regional health director told the gathering that fortunately, the region had consistently recorded less than 10 cases per week for the past five to six weeks while active cases within the same period stood at three mild cases and all of them responded well to treatment.

Vaccines

He said the vaccines currently being deployed in the region included Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson for persons 18 years and above except Pfizer vaccines which Dr Ofosu indicated were for persons 15 years and above.

He stated that the vaccination exercise was ongoing at the various health directorates, hospitals, health centres, clinics, CHPS compounds, schools and other designated points in all the 33 districts in the region, and urged all persons 15 years and above to visit such designated points with valid identification cards to be vaccinated.

Dr Ofosu, who indicated that the vaccines were safe and capable to protect persons from severe COVID-19 cases and deaths, entreated the targeted group to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

With regards to the prevention of the pandemic, Dr Ofosu advised people living in the region to continue to observe the safety protocols such as washing hands with soap under running water or using alcohol-based sanitizer, physical/social distancing, avoiding handshakes, observing cough etiquette and the use of face masks in public places.

Advice

He also advised people to take a nutritious and balanced diet, have a good rest each day and consult physicians for regular medical check-ups to ensure chronic illnesses were well managed.

Dr Ofosu called on the media to continue to partner the Ghana Health Service to educate and sensitise the people in the region so as to stay safe from the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIDS Commission warns against unprotected sex as HIV soars in Eastern Region https://www.adomonline.com/aids-commission-warns-against-unprotected-sex-as-hiv-soars-in-eastern-region/ Mon, 22 Nov 2021 11:44:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2047398 The acting Eastern Regional Technical Coordinator of the Technical Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Ebenezer Appiah Agyekum Abrokwa, has disclosed that HIV infection in the region is going up marginally.

According to him, the Region has recorded over 2,000 new infections in the past year.
“We are seeing an increase in prevalence in Eastern Region. We are getting more people tested and we are getting more HIV cases.

“Our estimated new infections are about 2,000. We know that about 80% of HIV transmission is through unprotected sex with an infected person so basically, the idea or arrows point to unprotected sex.”

Mr Abrokwa said some visuals shown on television and the internet are risky to sexual relations among the youth leading to the increase in HIV cases in the Region.

“Young people are engaging in risky sexual behaviour and also we are seeing that there is a lot more exposure of young people to a lot of sexual suggestive stuff like the contents we see on TV, contents we see on the internet. Lifestyle that is being advocated out there by older population so we see a lot of young men engaging in risky sexual behaviour,’’ he said.

Mr Abrokwa also bemoaned that many of these people who have tested positive are refusing to access the antiretroviral drugs for management of the virus.

“Another thing is that people are not going for treatment after they test positive. So in places where there are high rural communities where access to health centres is a bit difficult you realise that people are not able to easily go to the hospital to access treatment, now we are told that health has been decentralised so even health centres and CHPS are always giving antiretroviral so when people are not accessing it then they are still in denial about their status or maybe their religious beliefs do not allow them to access the drug,” he said.

Already, people living with HIV in Eastern Region are 47,8166 but only 30,538 are accessing the antiretroviral drug.

The situation has also been attributed to reckless and risky sexual behaviours including unprotected sexual intercourse involving young men and women in the region.
