The angry motorists, particularly “trotro” drivers, and their conductors, registered their displeasure, blocking road access on the stretch for hours.

They blocked the road with stones and wooden planks as they compelled their colleague drivers’ alight on-board passengers over what they described as harassment from the Kumasi metropolitan assembly.

The obstruction of traffic caused a stir as passengers and other road users were delayed in attending their daily duties.

It took the intervention of the police to disperse the angry drivers and allow free traffic flow in the area.

According to the aggrieved group, one person was allegedly arrested by the police.

On June 11, 2025, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) commenced a clampdown on drivers who charged unapproved transport fares.

Twenty-two vehicles were impounded by the assembly with their drivers paying between 500 cedis to 1,500 cedis fine for defying the national directive for 15% fare reduction.

In an interview with some drivers on why they charge the unapproved fares, they argue persistent harassment and bribes demanded from some police officers informed their decisions to increase the fare during odd hours.

They further indicated that it is the only means to break even, especially given the current expensive economic dispensation.

Head porter on bail for stabbing driver https://www.adomonline.com/head-porter-on-bail-for-stabbing-driver/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 08:03:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515880 A 28-year-old head porter, Kennedy Dadzie, has been granted GH¢50,000 bail with two sureties by the Amasaman Circuit Court for allegedly stabbing a driver.

The court, presided over by Enid Marful-Sau, ordered that Dadzie’s sureties provide valid national identity cards to the court’s registry.

Dadzie pleaded not guilty to stabbing Kofi Owusu in the arm and was directed to reappear before the court on April 22, 2025.

Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru told the court that both the complainant, Owusu, a driver, and the accused, Dadzie, a head porter, reside in Treba.

He explained that in July 2024, Owusu noticed his Samsung A13 phone was missing. Upon questioning his wife, she allegedly mentioned seeing Dadzie smoking behind their building at midnight.

Owusu confronted Dadzie and warned him to stay away from the back of his house. This reportedly angered Dadzie, leading to threats.

According to Chief Inspector Nashiru, on August 5, 2024, while Owusu and one Kwame were at a park in Treba, Dadzie allegedly passed by and threatened them.

A heated argument ensued, during which Dadzie reportedly pulled a jackknife and attempted to stab Kwame. Owusu then chased him with a stick, causing Dadzie to flee.

Shortly after, while Owusu was heading home, Dadzie allegedly emerged and stabbed him in the left arm before escaping.

Following a tip-off, Dadzie was arrested on March 10, 2025. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the offence and was subsequently arraigned.

Driver jailed for killing 3 teenage passengers after inhaling laughing gas  https://www.adomonline.com/driver-jailed-for-killing-3-teenage-passengers-after-inhaling-laughing-gas/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 18:26:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485326

A driver who inhaled laughing gas at the wheel has been jailed for nine years and four months after he admitted killing his three teenage passengers in a high-speed crash.

Thomas Johnson, 19, had admitted to taking nitrous oxide through balloons while driving and exceeding speeds of more than 100mph on a road with a speed limit of 30mph.

He pleaded guilty to causing the deaths earlier on Wednesday at Oxford Crown Court.

Addressing Johnson, Judge Emma Nott said his actions were “all for teenage thrills” and he would be “forever defined” by his “teenage mistakes”.

Daniel Hancock, 18, Ethan Goddard, 18, and Elliot Pullen, 17, died in the crash in Marcham, Oxfordshire, in June last year.

Their families have spoken of being “united by grief” by the tragedy and hope the sentence “will serve as a deterrent” to others.

Mobile phone video footage taken inside the BMW 3 series, moments before it crashed, showed the boys laughing and passing nitrous oxide canisters to the front while Johnson had a balloon to his face.

The tyres can be heard screeching as the vehicle drifts around a corner at high speed.

Thames Valley Police also released an ANPR photo of the driver and front passenger with balloons to their mouths.

CCTV footage shows the vehicle overtaking another car at more than 100mph. Police say the vehicle’s electronic stability control had been deliberately switched off.

Johnson, who sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, says he does not remember what happened.

In a police interview afterwards, he revealed he was aware of the risks.

Asked if he had ever taken nitrous oxide, Johnson responded: “No, not this year. I remember doing it once last year with a group of friends before I could even drive but I don’t have any recollection after that.”

Asked if he remembered what the effect of it was, Johnson replied: “It made my head feel dizzy.”

Families hope sentence is ‘deterrent’

Commenting on the case, a joint family statement said: “No amount of imprisonment will bring our sons back home and we take little comfort in the sentencing of someone else’s son.

“However, we do hope that this will serve as a deterrent to other drivers, especially young men.

“If just one person adjusts their attitude to driving, or one person thinks twice about being a passenger along for the ride then there is hope that something good can come out of this tragedy.”

‘Permanent living nightmare’

Elliot Pullen’s parents, Kate and Giles, and his sister Mia issued a separate statement describing their sense of loss and being “united by grief” in what was a “permanent living nightmare”. They said they had been “sucked into a world of grief, sadness and pain”.

The parents of Ethan Goddard paid tribute, writing that he “was a fun, loving, kind, generous, caring young lad, always thinking of others, and getting the most out of life”.

They added he “was loved so very much and made his family so proud”.

Meanwhile, Daniel Hancock’s family said in a statement he “was truly loved and will always be missed. He was caring, generous and selfless.”

And they issued a warning to other young drivers.

“Daniel died three miles from home in a completely avoidable crash. Please don’t be that driver who shows such disregard for their friends’ lives.”

Detective Sergeant Tony Jenkins, of Thames Valley Police’s serious collisions investigative unit, explained that nitrous oxide impairs a driver’s ability to make decisions.

According to the Auditor General’s report, a shipment of condoms and birth control shots disappeared while in transit from the Temporary Central Medical Stores in Tema to the Regional Medical Stores in the Eastern Region in August 2022.

The Ministry’s driver, Joe Gyaten, failed to deliver three million condoms and other contraceptives to the Regional Medical Stores in the Eastern Region, in August 2022.

During a recent Public Accounts Committee session, Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Health Ministry, Dr Alberta Biritwum-Naryko revealed that despite the passage of two years, neither the vehicle nor the missing items have been recovered.

“The driver immediately after, had a stroke, was very ill but has also retired. I cannot recollect the reasons why he could not deliver the items but the matter was the items could not be found and he had not also paid as at that time.”

When asked about the whereabouts of the vehicle used for transporting the items, Dr. Biritwum-Naryko said that locating the vehicle would be challenging.

She admitted that while the exact location of the vehicle remains unknown, it is clear that the items did not reach the Eastern Regional Medical Stores.

Driver jailed 15 years for defiling minor in church https://www.adomonline.com/driver-jailed-15-years-for-defiling-minor-in-church/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 02:45:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2349040 A 27-year-old driver who had sex with a 14-year-old girl in a church at Sowutuom has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

Appearing before the Gender Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters, Enoch Mensah pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement.

The court convicted Mensah on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly.

Apart from the church premises, Mensah is said to have defiled the victim on four separate occasions in the complainant’s house.

Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei prayed the court to hand down a deterrent sentence because the victim innocently followed Mensah who sought her assistance, but he ended up defiling in the church.

Prosecution recounted the increasing number of defilement cases, saying a harsh sentence would serve as a deterrent to likeminded persons.

The case of prosecution is that the complainant is a trader, residing at Apotro near Sowutuom in Accra and (Complainant), mother of the victim, aged 14 years.

The prosecutor said Mensah, a driver, also resided in the same vicinity.

In June 2023, the victim went to the Church name withheld at Nsumfa, near Sowutum to help the accused clean the church.

It said Mensah locked the church and took the victim to one of the offices where he had “unprotected sexual intercourse” with her on one of the tables and warned her not to tell anyone.

The prosecutor said Mensah went on to have sexual intercourse with the victim on four occasions in the complainant’s house.

It said on August 23, 2023, the complainant noticed some changes in the victim and quizzed her.

Prosecution said the victim disclosed her ordeal and the complainant reported the matter to the Police and a Police Medical form was issued to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim.

When the endorsed medical form was given to the Police, they (police) caused Mensah’s arrest.

In Mensah’s caution statement, he admitted the offence.

Driver convicted for offering car owner’s vehicle for sale https://www.adomonline.com/driver-convicted-for-offering-car-owners-vehicle-for-sale/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 14:39:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2343085 A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 33-year-old driver accused of offering his car owner’s vehicle for GH¢80,000 without his approval to seven years imprisonment in hard labour.

Vincent Fisher, a resident of Kasoa, in the Central Region denied the offence when he appeared before the presiding judge, Mrs Hathia Ama Manu.

After the trial, Fisher was found guilty and punished accordingly to serve as a deterrent to other drivers.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector, Joseph Lartey said Amobi Chukwu, the complainant is a driver and a resident of Lagos, a town in Nigeria.

He said about two months ago, the complainant gave his Toyota Sienna vehicle with registration number AGL 152 GN to Fisher at Lagos for transport business.

Fisher started driving between Lagos and Accra, but after a month he told Chukwu that he wanted to marry in Ghana, and therefore pleaded to use the car for weeks.

Chief Inspector Lartey said the complainant agreed and on August 5, 2023, Fisher brought the vehicle to Ghana but after completing his programme, he failed to resume work though Chukwu contacted him on phone many times.

He said Chukwu, who realised all was not well, decided to check the tracking device he installed on the vehicle from August 21, 2023, realized the vehicle was in Manso Amenfi in the Western Region, but the convict insisted it was in Accra.

Based on the information, Chukwu came to Ghana to look for his vehicle and on August 23, 2023, he made a report at the Regional Police Command where police officers were detailed to assist him.

He said with the aid of the tracking device, the police found the vehicle parked near a house at Manso Amenfi with registration number AP 525-22, insurance, road worthy certificates and a “for sale” sticker affix on the windscreen with two mobile phone numbers.

The court heard that Fisher was picked up and the vehicle retrieved and sent to the Regional Police Headquarters for interrogations.

Joseph Yankson is said to have taken advantage of the absence of the victim’s mother and defiled the 13-year-old twice.

He repeated the act after promising to appease the victim’s family with a sheep.

Charged with defilement, Yankson pleaded guilty.

The court presided over by Dora Eshun Inkumasah convicted Yankson on his plea.

Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyie, who held the brief of Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor, narrated that, the complainant was a teacher and a friend of the mother of the victim.

The prosecution said the accused person, now a convict, was the stepfather of the victim.

The prosecution contends that the victim, along with her mother, siblings, and the accused person, lived together in a residence located in Tetegu, near Weija in Accra.

In 2023, the prosecution said the victim’s mother travelled to Ajumako in the Central Region to visit some family relations and left the children in the care of the accused person.

The Court heard that the accused person took advantage of the absence of his wife and had sexual intercourse with the victim.

The prosecution said the victim informed her mother upon her return.

It said the victim’s mother then summoned the accused person before some family heads, and while deliberating on the matter, Yankson admitted the offence and promised to appease the victim’s family with a sheep.

On December 26, 2023, in the evening, Yankson had another sexual intercourse with the victim.

The prosecution said the victim narrated her ordeal to the complainant and on January 4, 2024, a complainant was lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, Weija Divisional Police Command, and a medical form was issued to the complainant to send the victim to hospital for examination and treatment.

Funsi market vehicle robbed, driver shot https://www.adomonline.com/funsi-market-vehicle-robbed-driver-shot/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 15:00:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2326818 Six suspected armed robbers have attacked and robbed several passengers of their money and other valuables when they were returning from the Funsi market in the Wa East District to Tumu.

The victims told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) hours after the attack that they were also beaten for not having enough money while the driver and other occupants of the front seat were shot.

Mr Adamu Kantong, the driver, aged 56 years, who survived the gunshot, said: “I got to a pothole between Vamboi and Bandei around 1900hrs and was stopped by a man with a torchlight.”

“As I stopped, I struggled to open the driver’s door, and the next thing was the gunshot, which pierced through my middle ring and small fingers, I immediately lost control of myself,” he added.

Mr Kantong said, “The other passenger sitting in the front also had his hand damaged by the bullets before they took all our phones and every penny on us and made all of us lie down.”

Mr Kantong was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and discharged from the hospital but lost the affected figures.

He blamed the authorities for the poor state of the roads, which he said contributed to those rampant robberies.

He appealed to the communities along the robbery area to see if they found their Ghana cards, health insurance cards, driver’s licenses, and other documents that were taken away.

One of the over 40 market women who were also robbed said everything was taken away from her and that the attackers also hit her with sticks.

Two other Kia trucks that were returning from Funsi and Kojikperi markets were also robbed as well as other trucks that were returning from Ouagadougou and several motorcycles.

The Sissala East Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Kumpe Gbele, in an interview with the GNA, said investigations on the robberies were ongoing and assured of enhanced security patrol.

Mr Gbele explained that the killing of a man in Mwanduanu was being treated as murder since no property was taken away.

In the case of a suspected robbery between Sakalo to Sakai, which led to the shooting of a student, Superintendent Gbele said it was also under investigation.

On the 25th of November 2023, a Fulbe settler in Sentie was also shot and killed in his hut, while a driver was robbed around the Sissili River close to Basisan.

“At the right time, the Police will give the public information of where they have reached with investigations”, Mr Gbele said.

Mr Gbele also admonished all drivers driving to seek police escorts irrespective of where they were going since there are enough Police officers to protect the people.

He warned that all passengers to insist on vehicles travelling with Police escort while those carrying huge sums of money to do business, should come over for free Police escort.

Mr Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah, who presided over the case, granted Kingsley Asamoah bail in the sum of GHC 30,000 with two sureties.

The matter has been adjourned to September 7, 2023.

According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor, the complainant is a hairdresser who lives in Lartebiokorshie, and Asamoah resides in the same house.

The prosecution said the complainant has a daughter who lives with her.

It said Asamoah and the complainant had an intimate relationship during which she fell pregnant but miscarried.

Their relationship, however, ended.

However, because of the accused’s previous relationship with the complainant, the victim has been running errands for Asamoah.

The prosecution said Asamoah exploited his relationship with the victim to have sex with her behind the complainant’s back.

According to the prosecutor, on July 21, 2023, at about 2030 hours, Asamoah asked the victim to go and buy him mosquito incense.

When the victim returned with the incense, Asamoah began to fondle her and eventually had sex with her.

The victim cried after the sexual act and went to inform her mother about the ordeal.

She told her mother that that was the fifth time that Asamoah had had sex with her.

On July 22, 2023, the complainant reported the incident to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, and she was given a medical report form to take the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Apiate explosion: Mining truck driver sacked with one month pay, recounts ordeal [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/apiate-explosion-mining-truck-driver-sacked-with-one-month-pay-recounts-ordeal-listen/ Fri, 15 Apr 2022 14:53:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2105106

A mining truck driver, who was transporting explosives that were involved in an accident and later exploded at Apiate near Bogoso, in the Western Region on January 20, has finally broken his silence on the matter.

According to Alfred Pappoe, his real intention was not to kill people when the accident occurred but rather to save the residents by driving out of the town after sensing danger.

“When I was almost getting to Apiate, the town was in a bend and at that time the police escort had already negotiated the bend. I later saw a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction and immediately an Urvan bus was just close to him and trying to overtake the ‘Pragya’ and there was a motor rider behind the Urvan bus.

“The motor rider was still following the Urvan and just when the Urvan driver shifted to another lane, the motor rider lost control and two people fell from the motor and the motor was heading towards his direction as he was very close,” he said.

Mr Pappoe said at that instant it was so easy for him to avoid the motor by turning to his left but may run into the two persons who fell off the motor so he decided not to take that decision,” he recounted on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty.

ALSO READ:

He continued: “If I turn to my left I may kill the two people but I later told myself that if the two people are safe then I need to take another lane. Unfortunately, I realised that that motor’s fuel tank had opened and started leaking under my truck and sparked the fire and touched my truck.”

Mr Pappoe said when the fire started he realised there was nothing he could do and so he decided to quickly move out of the town before it explodes.

“The town was just on the curve and when I realised there was nothing I could do, I decided to drive quickly from the town because I knew it was going to explode. That was when some of the residents started drawing closer to the truck and started shouting that the truck was on fire.

“I knew what was I doing and so I didn’t even pay attention to the residents. I wanted to just move out of the town and drive past a fuel station and get a safer place and leave the truck there to explode even though I was feeling the heat in the truck,” he added.

He said the residents were still following the truck and did not budge despite his continuous caution because they wanted to take pictures and videos of the incident.

Unfortunately, the explosives detonated and killed some of them.

The heartbroken driver, who is still nursing his wounds, said he is now out of job, stating MAXAM company where he worked paid him a month’s salary and sacked him not taking into consideration the danger he was involved in.

He, therefore, wondered why the company would sack him after risking his life without any compensation from them.

The disastrous accident at Apiate involved a DAF vehicle with registration number WR 2252-18 transporting explosives from Tarkwa to Chirano Gold Mines and a motorcycle.

The Police stated that the rider of the motorcycle from the opposite direction, collided with the vehicle on Thursday.

Jasikan DCE, driver trade slaps over use of Assembly vehicle https://www.adomonline.com/jasikan-dce-driver-trade-slaps-over-use-of-assembly-vehicle/ Tue, 13 Mar 2018 05:49:12 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1002841 The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Jasikan Assembly in the Volta Region, Lawrence Kwami Aisle has sacked his driver over what he described as gross insubordination.
Frank Afriyie claimed his boss has severed ties with him after his bold decision to retaliate a “hefty slap” he gave him.
READ: VIDEO: Kumchacha and Afia Schwarzenegger in heated exchange
Justifying his decision to return the slap, the driver told Joy News’ Elton Brobbey Monday he did not like the ungrateful manner his boss treated him in front of residents.
He said the DCE had instructed him, on a rainy day, to pick up a friend’s girlfriend who was visiting from another town.
On his way back, the vehicle developed a mechanical fault which delayed them for some time. But the DCE’s friend was displeased with him when he arrived on the scene.

He ordered him to hand over the car key but he refused.
Mr Afriyie said his boss was summoned to the scene and instead of asking about what happened, his first reaction was to slap him.
“If you don’t want to work with me again, [tell me and] I will give you your key but I am not your child,” he told Elton.

While the hefty slap was transmitting vibrations through his head, Mr Afriyie regained some balance and retaliated.
“I gave him a heavy slap,” he told the reporter, saying he was immediately sent to the police station after that.
But Mr Aisle has dismissed the claim as false, saying he did not trade slaps with his driver as has been reported.
“I didn’t slap him and he didn’t slap me [but] Frank has been involved in drunk behaviour [and] on the day I asked him to go and drop some visitors, I received calls that he was driving on top speed,” he countered.
He said the constant recklessness of Mr Afriyie on Jasikan’s streets is “disgracing and bringing the image of the assembly into disrepute.”
“Enough is enough,” Mr Aisle said in a response to a question about why he dismissed his driver.

Ebony’s driver to be charged with careless driving https://www.adomonline.com/ebonys-driver-charged-careless-driving/ https://www.adomonline.com/ebonys-driver-charged-careless-driving/#comments Mon, 12 Feb 2018 09:22:31 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=923771 The police has revealed that driver of the jeep vehicle carrying Ebony and two others who died after the ghastly accident may be charged with careless and inconsiderate driving.

The driver, Pinehad Oko Chartey, 29, was the only surviving occupant of the Jeep that had dancehall artiste, Priscilla Opoku Kwarteng known in showbiz as Ebony, her 27-year-old friend, Francisca Nkansah Kuure, and 29-year-old Lance Corporal Vondee Atsu Francis aboard.

Information from police wireless message which has been intercepted by the media has pointed to careless and inconsiderate driving as the cause of the accident.

The wireless message also stated that the suspect driver, Pinehad Chartey, is on police enquiry bail while investigations continue.

MORE:

It narrated that Pinehad was driving the Jeep with registration number AS 497-16 from Sunyani to Accra with the three others on board, while suspect driver, Mohammed Abubakar, aged 48, was also driving a KIA Grand Bird (VIP) with registration number GT 3232-17 from Accra to Sunyani with a set of passengers on board.

It said upon reaching a section of the road between Nyamebekyere and Nsuta, there was a heap of sand in the lane of the Jeep which was being used for road maintenance, and the driver in his bid to avoid running into the sand, swerved onto the opposite lane and grazed the near side portion of the bus, plunging into the railings on the edge of the road.

While the three other occupants of the Jeep could not survive, all passengers aboard the VIP bus escaped unhurt.

Bodies of the deceased persons have since been deposited at the Bechem Government Hospital for preservation.

The death of the three, most notably the music icon, Ebony, has reignited the debate on poor road infrastructure across the country, and why successive governments have failed in their numerous promises to either tar or rehabilitate them.
