Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s road to NPP presidential primaries

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its pivotal January 31, 2026, presidential primaries, one contender’s blend of educational transformation and political ambition is capturing attention across Ghana’s political landscape.

He is Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Bosomtwe MP and former Minister of Education whose journey from humble beginnings to national leadership contender reads like a narrative of perseverance, passion, and purpose.

Born on 9 April 1964 in Jachie, a small village in the Ashanti Region, Adutwum’s early life was shaped by economic hardship.

The son of a cocoa farmer, his academic brilliance faced real barriers; at one point his family struggled to raise school fees, even relying on relatives’ help so he could attend secondary school.

Yet, that adversity became the foundation of his political ethos: education as a transformative force.

“I have a deep passion for education and an unrepentant belief that the best way to transform Ghana and in fact Africa is through education,” he has said over the years, a belief that now anchors his broader vision for national progress.

Adutwum’s academic path took him to Jachie‑Pramso Secondary School, where he obtained his GCE O‑Level certificate, before proceeding to Kumasi High School for his A‑Levels.

Then subsequently, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and to the United States, where he earned advanced degrees in Education Management and a PhD in Educational Policy and Administration.

In the US, he spent over two decades as an educator and administrator: teaching mathematics and IT in Los Angeles, leading charter school initiatives, and eventually founding New Designs Charter Schools, a tuition-free public charter system serving thousands of students across middle and high school levels.

It was this blend of classroom experience and institutional leadership that defined Adutwum’s early career and laid the groundwork for his eventual return to Ghana.

A chance encounter with then-presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Los Angeles, inspired by Akufo-Addo’s vision for Free Senior High School, prompted Adutwum’s return to Ghana in 2017, resigning from his US posts to serve his home country.

He quickly became a rising figure in the NPP, elected Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency with commanding victories in 2016, 2020, and again in 2024.

In government, he served as Deputy Minister of Education (2017–2021) before being elevated to Minister of Education (2021–2024).

In these roles he championed major reforms, notably pushing Ghana’s STEM education agenda, commissioning dozens of STEM schools and infrastructure projects, and navigating the complexities of the Free SHS policy, earning him the nickname “Dr. STEM.”

Adutwum’s campaign for the NPP flagbearer slot is grounded in both his reform record and a broader socio-economic agenda. Officially declaring his intention to run in June 2025, he has positioned himself as a unity candidate focused on poverty alleviation, high-skill job creation, and human capital development.

His “Hope Tour” across regions doubled down on anti-poverty messaging, while policy pillars expanded beyond education to include grants for traders, welfare officers in constituencies, and a free university policy to eliminate financial barriers to higher education.

That vision resonates with many who see in him a leader whose technocratic competence might translate into broader economic and social renewal.

He faces stiff competition from seasoned figures such as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong.

However, Adutwum’s campaign narrative informed by personal struggle, global expertise, and tangible policy achievements gives him a distinctive voice among NPP delegates ahead of the primaries.

Observers describe him as an “underdog” whose political experience may be understated but whose grassroots engagement and forward-looking ideas could reshape conversations within the party.

Dr. Adutwum in the course of his campaign emphasised that being perceived as an underdog gives him the space to work quietly while listening closely to the concerns and expectations of delegates across the country.

He has explained that this approach helps him avoid distractions and external pressure, enabling more honest and productive interactions with party stakeholders as the internal contest gathers momentum.

A devoted Christian, husband, and father, Dr. Adutwum maintains strong ties to both Ghana and his earlier life in America, blending spiritual conviction with public service.

His campaign, at its core, is more than a bid for office; it’s a call to harness education as the engine of national renewal.

In a year defined by political choice and generational change, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s candidacy offers a lens into how educational transformation, personal resilience, and pragmatic policy can intersect to shape Ghana’s political future.

I would win if NPP primary was held today – Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/i-would-win-if-npp-primary-was-held-today-adutwum/ Tue, 27 Jan 2026 08:30:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2624043 Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has expressed confidence in winning the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, insisting that if the contest were held today, he would emerge victorious.

Speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) attributed his optimism to faith, growing grassroots support, and his track record in public service and party work.

“I feel I’d win the NPP primaries if it were held today,” he said, adding, “I believe in divine providence and I have faith in the people.”

Dr. Adutwum noted that the NPP is at a defining moment and must select a leader who can both transform the country and maintain party unity.

“We are looking for a leader who will change this country first and foremost, and we are also looking for a leader who will be able to unify the party,” he stated.

He said his approach to politics sets him apart from other contenders, highlighting that he avoids internal conflicts and personal attacks.

“I believe that I’m the one that can bring that unity because I am not a source of any acrimony,” he noted. “I am not saying anything bad against anybody. I am just selling myself to them.”

Dr. Adutwum explained that his interactions with delegates focus on his vision, experience, and performance rather than negative campaigning.

“When I go before the delegates, it’s all about Yaw Adutwum, getting them to understand who I am, where I am coming from, what I have done and what I will do when they give me the opportunity,” he said.

He added that his message to party members is built on unity, continuity, and credible leadership as the NPP prepares for its upcoming presidential primaries.

Adutwum recounts near-death experience over Free SHS [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/adutwum-recounts-near-death-experience-over-free-shs-watch/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 07:35:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618581 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has recounted a harrowing incident in which he nearly lost his life while on official duty, describing it as one of the biggest personal sacrifices he has made for the party and the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Bosomtwe MP said the incident occurred after he travelled to Bolgatanga for a programme on the implementation of Free Senior High School (SHS) as a Deputy Education Minister—an event that eventually did not take place.

On his return journey to Kumasi, Dr. Adutwum explained, his vehicle came under attack near Buipe.

“A group of armed, masked men suddenly emerged and opened fire on the vehicle,” he said. He credited his survival to the swift reaction of his driver, whom he described as “very tactful,” noting that quick manoeuvring enabled them to escape the attackers.

Dr. Adutwum added that after driving a short distance, the tyres went flat, further highlighting the danger they had faced. The police later indicated that the attack was unusual, as no government vehicle had reportedly been targeted in that manner at the time.

He stressed that the incident left senior government officials alarmed when they saw the damaged vehicle.

“When Yaw Osafo-Maafo and then National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah inspected the car and observed the bullet marks, they were shocked and thanked God for my survival,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum also noted that the police have been unable to reach a conclusive investigation on the case, with James Oppong-Boanuh serving as Inspector-General of Police at the time.

With the NPP presidential primaries approaching on January 31, Dr. Adutwum said the experience underscores his dedication and commitment to both the party and the country.

How Adutwum’s kindness helped young man achieve dream to become medical doctor https://www.adomonline.com/how-adutwums-kindness-helped-young-man-achieve-dream-to-become-medical-doctor/ Thu, 13 Nov 2025 14:40:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2599612 In an inspiring display of compassion and dedication to empowering the next generation, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe constituency and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to education and human development.

His long-standing support for brilliant but needy students continues to yield life-changing results, as one of his beneficiaries, Dr. Emmanuel Agyemang, has successfully graduated from the University for Development Studies (UDS) as a qualified medical doctor.

Dr. Adutwum’s investment in human capital is more than a political gesture—it is a personal mission to transform lives through education.

Years ago, he identified Emmanuel as a promising young student whose financial circumstances threatened to derail his academic dreams.

Without hesitation, Dr. Adutwum stepped in to sponsor his education, ensuring that Emmanuel’s brilliance did not go to waste.

Today, Dr. Emmanuel Agyemang stands tall as a symbol of hope and determination—a living testament to what targeted educational support can achieve.

His journey from a struggling student to a medical doctor ready to serve Ghana’s healthcare system underscores the life-changing impact of Dr. Adutwum’s generosity.

Speaking with deep emotion, Dr. Agyemang reflected on his remarkable journey.

“My path was not an easy one, but Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s kindness gave me a second chance at life. His support carried me through school and medical training, and today I am proud to serve my nation as a doctor.”

Equally moved was his mother, Monica Tiwaah, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Adutwum for stepping in when all hope seemed lost.

“He came into our lives as a blessing. I will forever be grateful for what he has done for my son and our family,” she shared.

Dr. Adutwum’s vision extends far beyond individual success stories. As part of his broader agenda for national development, he envisions a Ghana where every constituency produces at least 20 medical doctors and 100 engineers, creating a pool of skilled professionals to drive innovation and progress across the nation.

To date, Dr. Adutwum has supported over 180 brilliant but financially challenged students pursuing degrees in Medicine and Engineering, proving that true leadership is not about position, but purpose.

As he continues to champion education as the foundation for national transformation, many see Dr. Adutwum not just as a political leader, but as a builder of dreams and futures.

His story, and that of Dr. Emmanuel Agyemang, stands as a shining example of how one act of compassion can ripple through generations, creating a legacy of hope, opportunity, and progress.

Hair policy in SHSs is about hygiene and safety, not discipline – Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/hair-policy-in-shss-is-about-hygiene-and-safety-not-discipline-adutwum/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 15:01:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592802 Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has called for a shift in how schools approach the issue of students keeping their hair, stressing that policies on hair length should be rooted in hygiene and safety rather than discipline.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Adutwum explained that while many schools in Ghana require students to cut their hair, the motivation behind such directives must be rational and considerate of students’ well-being.

“We sometimes think we are the adults and they are the children, so we force certain decisions on them without proper engagement,” he said. “We see it as discipline, but in reality, the hair issue is about hygiene and safety.”

The Bosomtwe MP cited the Accra High Court’s decision in the case of Achimota School and Tyrone Marhguy, noting that the court’s position reflected the importance of fairness and understanding in school policies. According to him, the rule on haircuts was historically introduced to help maintain cleanliness and ensure students devoted time to their studies, not as a form of punishment.

“When schools make rules that students must cut their hair, it’s not about discipline. It’s because not everyone has the luxury to keep their hair neat all the time,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum drew comparisons with schools abroad, where students are allowed to keep long hair but must follow safety measures, especially during physical activities.

“In my schools abroad, people come with long hair, but we have put measures in place to avoid injury during P.E. So we tell parents to either cut the length of the hair or tie it in a ponytail, and they always understand,” he shared.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful urged Ghanaian schools to adopt a similar approach that emphasizes communication and understanding between teachers, parents, and students.

“We can make the children understand the issues because keeping long or short hair is not about discipline but hygiene and safety,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum also advised that exceptions be made for students whose parents cite religious or cultural reasons for not cutting their hair.

“If parents give valid reasons their child’s hair cannot be cut, any court will rule in their favour. So schools must handle these cases with flexibility,” he explained.

He concluded that the focus should be on rational policy grounded in health and safety rather than enforcing uniform behavior for its own sake.

“We must let the children understand it’s for their own good, not just a disciplinary measure,” Dr. Adutwum added.

Adutwum is NPP’s most unifying and credible candidate – Kusi Boafo https://www.adomonline.com/adutwum-is-npps-most-unifying-and-credible-candidate-kusi-boafo/ Thu, 16 Oct 2025 09:23:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2589039 Former Chief Executive Officer of the Public Sector Reforms Secretariat, Thomas Kusi Boafo, has described former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum as the most credible and unifying figure among those seeking to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

According to Mr Kusi Boafo, the Bosomtwe MP represents integrity, vision, and a clean political record, qualities the NPP urgently needs to rebuild trust with the Ghanaian public following its 2024 electoral defeat.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, he praised Dr Adutwum as “a leader with little political baggage,” noting that his humility and competence set him apart from the other contenders.

“Dr. Adutwum stands tall among all the candidates because he is the one with little baggage. If he can unite the party, he will be successful,” he said.

Mr. Boafo expressed concern about growing internal divisions and infighting within the NPP, warning that the party’s ability to reclaim power in 2028 would depend largely on unity after the upcoming January 31, 2026, presidential primary.

He cautioned against the name-calling and personal attacks among supporters of various aspirants, stressing that such behaviour undermines the party’s image and weakens its electoral prospects.

“After insulting and throwing wild allegations against opposing candidates, how are you going to campaign for the choice of the delegates who may not be your preferred candidate?” he asked.

Mr Kusi Boafo further argued that the NPP needs a transformational leader who can restore public confidence and inspire hope.

He highlighted Dr Adutwum’s achievements in expanding access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education as evidence of his forward-looking leadership.

He said electing Dr Adutwum as flagbearer would mark a new chapter for the NPP, one of renewal, reconciliation, and hope.

“Given what has happened since the party lost power in 2024, I am convinced that Dr Adutwum’s leadership will give the NPP the best chance to rebuild and win back the confidence of Ghanaians,” he added.

Mr. Boafo urged delegates to prioritise unity, discipline, and character over personal loyalty or financial inducement when choosing the next leader of the party.

He expressed optimism that with the right leadership, the NPP could overcome its current challenges and make a strong comeback in 2028.

NPP flagbearer race: They underestimate me at their own risk – Adutwum  https://www.adomonline.com/npp-flagbearer-race-they-underestimate-me-at-their-own-risk-adutwum/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 10:00:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579439 Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has warned those dismissing his chances in the race to do so at their own peril.

The former Education Minister, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on September 16, embraced the underdog tag but insisted it was an advantage in politics.

“Underdog is good, and I will always accept that I used to be an underdog, so I will always accept underdog. Underdog is always good in politics,” he said when asked by host Evans Mensah if he accepted that label.

Pressed on why it was good in the context of the primary, Dr Adutwum argued that being underestimated played in his favour.

“You are an underdog… You are underestimated… It’s good. I know the work I’m doing on the ground, so if you underestimate me, it’s good for me.”

He cited the August 29, 2025, Global Info Analytics survey, which placed Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at 42 per cent, Kennedy Agyapong at 36 per cent, and himself at 10 per cent.

But he dismissed suggestions that the numbers put him at a disadvantage.

“Well, 10% we just started. I just filed my nomination. They’ve been running around the country for how many years, campaigning? Bawumia has campaigned for 16 years plus and now, he’s a household name.

“He’s known everywhere; he was with former president Akufo-Addo all these years. So I’m even happy that I just started, and I’m 10%.”

Dr Adutwum said the race had only begun, and he was prepared to surprise his rivals.

“Now that the battle has begun and the wisdom has been blown, I’m going to let Ghanaians know that there will be a new dawn.

“A new day in this country, where all the things that we thought were not possible become possible because there’s a can-do spirit, a can-do attitude that says, I don’t take no for an answer when it comes to making sure that we really elevate this nation out of poverty to a place where we can be proud of this nation.”

Military deployment alone won’t end galamsey – Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/military-deployment-alone-wont-end-galamsey-adutwum/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 09:46:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577264 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, says addressing unemployment is the most effective way to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Dr. Adutwum argued that relying solely on military interventions will not solve the menace.

“If we don’t deal with the root cause, we will always prescribe wrong solutions. The root cause is unemployment,” he noted.

According to him, most of the youth engaged in galamsey are school dropouts.

“Many of these young people leave school after junior high. We need to get them into senior high schools, TVET, or vocational training to cut the pathway to galamsey,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum further proposed the establishment of counseling centers to guide young people toward alternative careers, alongside the creation of blue-collar job opportunities and targeted interventions in mining communities.

“Ending galamsey is not just about deploying the military. There has to be a conscious effort to take the youth out of the galamsey pipeline,” he emphasized.

Speaking to party supporters after filing his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) said his tenure at the Ministry of Education demonstrated his capacity to deliver results.

“The work that I have done at the Ministry of Education, given the opportunity by President Akufo-Addo, I began transforming public schools, I began bringing STEM education to Ghana, and revamping TVET education. Now the testimony is there for you all to see,” he stated.

He stressed that his leadership style is grounded in results, insisting that his record speaks for itself.

“I only do evidence-based communication. What I have done is there for every one of you to see,” Dr. Adutwum told the gathering.

Positioning himself as a strong contender for the party’s flagbearership, he argued that his contributions to national development make him a natural choice.

“If the Minister, who did a great job for this party and did a great job for this nation, stands in front of you and wants to be a flagbearer, here is a front-bearer who is a complete flagbearer,” he declared.

Responding to perceptions that he is “too quiet,” the former Minister said his calm disposition should not be mistaken for weakness.

“There are some of you who say, ‘Yes, Adutwum is too quiet.’ I have a backbone of steel,” he asserted.

Education will drive Ghana’s transformation – Dr. Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/education-will-drive-ghanas-transformation-dr-adutwum/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 17:05:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571420 Former Minister of Education and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has outlined an ambitious vision to transform Ghana through a strong and innovative education system.

Speaking on Joy Learning TV’s News in Focus, Dr. Adutwum said his policies, if elected as party leader and eventually president, would prioritize human capital development as the foundation for national progress.

“I want to see a transformed Ghana, with education as the driving force—just as Singapore, South Korea, and China used education to build strong economies,” he explained.

Citing lessons from other nations, he noted that Singapore reformed its mathematics curriculum while China invested in producing large numbers of engineers to accelerate industrialization and attract global manufacturers.

According to him, Ghana can chart a similar path by aligning education with industry demands to produce skilled graduates capable of solving national challenges while driving innovation and growth.

“Through quality and relevant education, we can strengthen industrialization, create jobs, and ensure sustainable development. Human capital development is what will transform our nation,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum also emphasized the need for value addition to Ghana’s natural and mineral resources, arguing that industrialization backed by a robust education system would increase national revenue while empowering individuals.

“We will add value to our raw materials and mineral resources to generate more revenue and provide jobs for our youth. This will help create millionaires—and eventually billionaires—in Ghana. For the nation to prosper, individuals must prosper,” he said.

He added that this vision is only a preview of his broader policy agenda, promising to unveil more transformative plans as part of his presidential campaign.

“I was born and raised on a cocoa farm” – Dr. Adutwum details humble beginnings [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-born-and-raised-on-a-cocoa-farm-dr-adutwum-details-humble-beginnings-video/ Sat, 23 Aug 2025 07:17:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570340 Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shared a deeply personal narrative of his family’s pioneering role in Ghana’s cocoa industry, drawing a direct line from his humble beginnings to his political ambitions.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Personal Profile, Dr. Adutwum, a former Minister of Education and incumbent MP for Bosomtwe, recounted a story of “adventurous, uneducated individuals” who, driven by opportunity, transformed Ghana’s landscape and economy.

The aspiring presidential candidate highlighted the generational journey of his family, which saw his uncle, acting almost as an apprentice, venturing into new territories in search of fertile land for cocoa cultivation.

When resources in that area were exhausted, their generation moved to the Central Region, settling in towns like Dunkwa, before continuing their expansion into the Western Region.

Dr. Adutwum’s story sheds light on the historical migration patterns of cocoa farmers, who were instrumental in establishing Ghana as a global cocoa powerhouse.

These pioneers, often uneducated but highly ambitious, moved from the Eastern and Central regions—the historical heartlands of cocoa farming—to newer frontiers in the Western and Ashanti regions.

This movement, driven by the search for untouched virgin forests, fueled the industry’s growth in the early to mid-20th century.

The locations mentioned by Dr. Adutwum—Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region, and Wasa Akropong and the Huni Valley-Tarkwa area in the Western Region—are historically and currently significant cocoa-growing hubs.

The Western and Western North Regions today account for a large portion of Ghana’s cocoa production.

The narrative of his family’s journey reflects a broader historical trend where these areas, once dense forests, were cleared by a new wave of migrant farmers, transforming them into Ghana’s economic backbone.

Dr. Adutwum’s account resonates with the Ghanaian identity, where cocoa is not just a commodity but a core part of the nation’s heritage and a source of livelihood for hundreds of thousands of families.

His personal story underscores a message of perseverance, foresight, and hard work—qualities he suggests are essential for national leadership.

By highlighting his family’s roots in the cocoa industry, Dr. Adutwum aims to connect with the electorate on a fundamental level, framing his journey as a microcosm of the Ghanaian spirit of enterprise and resilience.

NPP formally introduced BSTEM – Dr. Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/npp-formally-introduced-bstem-dr-adutwum/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 15:52:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570211 Former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has insisted that the Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (BSTEM) initiative being celebrated today was first rolled out under his leadership.

His comments follow the relaunch of the BSTEM programme in Sunyani earlier this week by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

The initiative is designed to equip basic school teachers with modern skills, digital tools, and innovative methods to make the teaching of science and mathematics more engaging and accessible.

At the launch, Mr Iddrisu noted that the idea had first been conceptualised under former Minister Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang between 2012 and 2016 but stalled until its revival this year.

However, responding to a question on Joy Learning, Dr Adutwum stressed that BSTEM had been formally introduced under his administration and not merely conceptualised.

“I just recently saw that BSTEM has been launched. But we launched it on November 1, 2024, at East Legon, Under-Bridge. If it has been launched again, that’s fine,” he said, adding that his team not only started the programme but also secured funding for it before leaving office.

He explained that while the original STEM policy under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo focused on senior high schools, BSTEM was specifically designed to extend those benefits to junior high and primary schools.

“I don’t think you can talk about STEM without acknowledging the work we did,” he noted, pointing to what he called the foundation of the country’s STEM and BSTEM revolution.

Dr Adutwum also highlighted other initiatives introduced during his tenure, including the establishment of new STEM-focused schools, transformation of selected public schools, and infrastructure upgrades at institutions such as St. Barnabas and Osu Presbyterian Secondary School.

He further cited progress in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and the introduction of new senior high school courses in Biomedical Science, Engineering, Aviation, and Aerospace.

Despite defending his record, Dr Adutwum commended Mr Iddrisu for continuing the programme, stressing that education policy must transcend partisan politics.

“Continuity is important,” he said. “Governments should focus on strengthening national initiatives that improve learning outcomes.”

‘Learn, believe, focus, and excel’ – Dr. Adutwum to 2025 WASSCE candidates https://www.adomonline.com/learn-believe-focus-and-excel-dr-adutwum-to-2025-wassce-candidates/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 11:10:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569696 Former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has delivered a heartfelt message to final-year students writing the 2025 WASSCE.

The New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer hopeful has urged the candidates to stay focused, believe in themselves, and remember that true success comes through hard work, not shortcuts.

Speaking in a special WASSCE edition of News in Focus on Joy Learning TV, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe constituency reflected on the journey of the candidates and the importance of mindset during the exam period.

“All too soon, three years have come. They walked into school three years ago. For some of them, I had a wonderful opportunity to visit them at the time,” he said.

He described the WASSCE period as a defining moment in their academic journey, and assured students that their preparation had not been in vain.

“Now, three years have come to an end and they are writing their WASSCE. I want them to know that the teachers in this country are the finest found anywhere in the world. So they have been prepared well,” he noted.

Dr. Adutwum stressed that focus and determination are the most important ingredients for success during the exam.

“They should be determined. They should understand that there are no shortcuts to success. If they focus, and do not engage in any malpractice, they will end up doing very well and their future will be very bright,” he highlighted.

He acknowledged that many students struggle with fear and self-doubt, especially when facing difficult subjects like Mathematics, but to those students, he offered a clear solution rooted in mindset.

“One of the issues we have is students saying to themselves, ‘I am afraid. It is Mathematics and I am afraid. I don’t think I can do well. What I tell students is to have a positive self-talk, where you tell yourself you will do well. Talk to yourself, assure yourself. And as a person of faith, you also pray,” he encouraged.

He advised candidates to build self-confidence through calm preparation and good exam technique.

“Be self-confident and assured that if you focus, read the questions and understand before you begin, you will always score very high,” he further urged.

Dr. Adutwum also had practical exam advice on how students should approach answering questions under timed conditions.

“When it comes to the theory component, there are a number of cases where the person is not sure of question one, but because it is the first question, they spend their time on that. By the time they realize, since it is a time test, time is up and they didn’t get to take a look at other questions that may be easier,” he explained.

He urged students to be strategic in their approach.

“That is why the first rule is: read through all the questions and select the one that you want to do first and answer that question quickly. Because if you are able to get that question right, it boosts your confidence to solve the difficult questions,” he advised.

“Even if you are required to solve all the problems, make sure to always solve the one that is easy first, to give you the self-confidence to tackle the difficult ones,” he added.

Dr. Adutwum wrapped up his remarks with a vote of confidence in both teachers and students.

“When we were there, we were helping with Chief Examiners in the preparation of teachers. There were Chief Examiners who travelled around the country and helped teachers in terms of what they need to do to support the candidates.

“I am hopeful they have done it this year too. So with that kind of preparation, I am sure they are going to do very well. I wish them well,” he concluded.

2025 WASSCE: “Handkerchiefs won’t write the exam for you” – Dr. Adutwum cautions candidates against spiritual shortcuts https://www.adomonline.com/2025-wassce-handkerchiefs-wont-write-the-exam-for-you-dr-adutwum-cautions-candidates-against-spiritual-shortcuts/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 10:54:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569688 As final-year students across the country sit for the 2025 WASSCE, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has cautioned candidates against relying on spiritual shortcuts for academic success, urging them to focus on preparation and personal responsibility.

Speaking to Irene Adubea Aning on the News in Focus programme aired on Joy Learning TV, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the importance of prayer and faith but warned students not to fall for unproven religious practices during exams.

“I believe in the help that comes from God,” he began. “What you can get as a religious person on the day of exams is remembrance. He can help you recall things you think you have forgotten.”

He emphasized that divine help complements preparation, it does not replace it. “I don’t think anyone can generate answers for you. For example, a religious leader telling you to put a handkerchief inside your answer booklet, claiming it will miraculously produce answers—I don’t believe in that,” he warned.

He expressed concern that such actions could have long-term consequences. “I don’t want to believe in things that could ruin their future. But I believe there is confidence that comes from knowing God takes away fear,” he added.

Dr. Adutwum advised students to instead turn to prayer for clarity, confidence, and peace of mind. “When you face a difficult question and have forgotten what you learned, pray to God. Before you know it, ideas you’ve studied will flow, and you will do well,” he encouraged.

He concluded with a strong caution against replacing preparation with misplaced faith: “If God knew that a handkerchief could give you answers, He would have told you not to go to school. You can rely on divine providence, but not to the extent that some spiritual force will do the exam for you,” he stressed.

Air Force pilots are too experienced and disciplined to crash helicopter – Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/air-force-pilots-are-too-experienced-and-disciplined-to-crash-helicopter-adutwum/ Tue, 19 Aug 2025 09:28:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2568793 Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has opened up on aviation safety and Ghana’s broader development agenda.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Dr. Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, expressed disbelief, recalling his own experiences aboard the Air Force’s aircraft.

On the recent military aviation tragedy, Dr. Adutwum believes the Air Force pilots are too experienced and disciplined to crash the helicopter.

“I have boarded the Air Force helicopter several times, and I never felt it could even crash because of the experienced and disciplined pilots and its smooth ride. I am still in a state of shock,” he stated.

The former minister criticised what he described as “slash and burn politics,” warning that such practices risk undermining national progress. He blamed the NDC for the inability of the Akufo-Addo government to sufficiently retool the Ghana Air Force.

“When Nana Addo decided to buy aircraft for the military, the then opposition MPs rose against it and played politics around it. The ‘slash and burn politics’ can put the lives of all Ghanaians at risk and eventually make politicians look stupid,” he cautioned.

According to him, politicians must learn to recognize and support the positive initiatives of the opposition in order to build the nation collectively.

“We cannot continue to demonize all the contributions of our political opponents for political gains. I believe if what a particular government is doing will help the nation, we must all support it and avoid unnecessary criticisms,” he stated.

Dr. Adutwum, however, highlighted the camaraderie that often exists in Parliament behind the scenes.

Joined by other NPP supporters, the group collected the forms at the party headquarters on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Prosper Opoku told Adom News’ Kodwo Mensah Aboroampa that their support was motivated by the Bosomtwe MP’s track record at the Ministry of Education.

He urged the nation to draw lessons from the tragedy.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Dr. Adutwum said he is confident in his ability to contribute meaningfully to the country’s progress.

“I have what it takes to help the country’s development. My vision is to eradicate poverty, promote healthcare through regular checkups, and improve our health sector by building more hospitals,” he stated.

Dr. Adutwum argued that just as individuals in other institutions such as the police aspire to leadership, politicians with the people’s trust must also aim for higher office.

“If the NPP is looking for someone to help win the next election, then I am the right person. I have done a lot for the country and will do more if elected,” he assured.

Dr. Adutwum is widely known for his work in education reform and served as Education Minister under the previous NPP administration.

Ablekuma North rerun: Adutwum condemns violence, urges swift probe https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-adutwum-condemns-violence-urges-swift-probe/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 15:17:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554614 Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has condemned the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Citing the assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and journalists, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said it was “deeply regrettable” and a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Dr. Adutwum, in a statement, emphasised that such incidents weaken the foundations of Ghana’s democratic system and urged immediate steps to avert reoccurrence.

“This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past.

“As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritise the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests,” he stated.

He warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains must not be reversed by what he described as acts of political aggression and intolerance.

Reflecting on the recent election outcome, Dr. Adutwum said it should serve as a reminder to all political stakeholders that power must be earned through ballots, not intimidation.

“The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores,” he said.

He urged the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum concluded with a call for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace, law, and democratic principles.

‎PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT BY DR. YAW OSEI ADUTWUM, NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY FLAGBEARER HOPEFUL, ON THE VIOLENCE THAT MARRED ABLEKUMA NORTH RE-RUN

I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, my condemnation of the acts of violence that marred the just-concluded Ablekuma North re-run

The brutal assault on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist from the EIB Network is not only deeply regrettable but also a threat to our democratic values.

This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past. As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritize the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests.

The collective efforts we have made over the years to build a strong and united Ghana should not be undone by acts of political intolerance, aggression, and violence.

The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores. Our deepened contemporary political credentials as a nation should teach us to come to terms with the fact that it is high time we kept our past political differences at bay and adopted values that will unite us as a people.

I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people. Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life.

Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens.

Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence.

Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.

The rerun, which covers 19 polling stations, follows the Electoral Commission’s decision to abandon an initial plan to collate results from three disputed polling stations.

Despite failing to secure a court injunction to halt the rerun, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie remains in the race and has expressed confidence in her chances, insisting she already won the contest by defeating the NDC’s candidate.

According to Dr. Adutwum’s team, the donation is aimed at strengthening her campaign, particularly in light of the short notice given by the EC.

The team says the gesture is also intended to help ensure the NPP retains the seat, which has historically been one of the party’s strongholds.

Dr. Adutwum’s team confirmed the donation and extended their best wishes to the candidate as she heads into the crucial contest.

Education Ministry record alone won’t earn you flagbearer slot – Vanderpuye cautions Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/education-ministry-record-alone-wont-earn-you-flagbearer-slot-vanderpuye-cautions-adutwum/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 10:17:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546286 National Coordinator of the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has advised former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to tread carefully as he campaigns for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership.

Dr. Adutwum, who officially announced his intention to contest the position on June 18, 2025, declared his readiness to lead the party into the next general election. In a Facebook post, he stated, “With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party.”

However, appearing on Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye noted that while Dr. Adutwum’s calm disposition and decision to run are commendable, he should not hinge his candidacy solely on his record at the Ministry of Education.

“It is good that Adutwum wants to contest the flagbearership. He has a very calm demeanour. But I don’t want him to premise his qualification on his performance at the Ministry of Education,” Vanderpuye cautioned.

He acknowledged that Dr. Adutwum’s tenure had its merits but also came with significant shortcomings.

“His performance is 50-50. There are things he did right, but there are also a lot of things he did wrong, which won’t give him the credibility he is seeking.”

Vanderpuye encouraged a more grounded and relatable campaign style that would connect better with party delegates and the broader electorate.

“He should go out there as Adutwum, a servant of this country. ‘I have served. I may not have achieved a perfect score, but I have served in humility and respect.’ Then people will assess him on that basis.”

He further warned that negative public perceptions of Dr. Adutwum’s tenure as minister could become a political liability.

“If people have issues about your tenure as minister, they will use that to punish you.”

The NPP is expected to officially open nominations for the flagbearer race ahead of the party’s internal elections scheduled for January 2026.

Dr. Adutwum expresses concern over number of engineers produced annually https://www.adomonline.com/dr-adutwum-expresses-concern-over-number-of-engineers-produced-annually/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 20:06:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545719

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has lamented that Ghana is underproducing engineers despite its growing population.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) revealed that the country should be producing about 30,000 engineers annually.

However, he stated that the current reality is that only about 6,500 engineers are produced each year — and even with these low numbers, many still struggle to find employment.

Dr. Adutwum cited Vietnam as an example, noting that the country produces 100,000 engineers out of its 93 million population, highlighting how far behind Ghana is.

He advocated for a national focus on STEM education and mathematics to enhance learning and enable students to explore and innovate.

“If we had started this 60 years ago, we would have been far advanced by now. We think education is just about memorising, but that’s why I said at the UN that we can’t memorise our way out of poverty — we can critically think our way out of poverty,” he stated.

“If we just chew and pour, we cannot transform our nation with education like Singapore and South Korea did.”

Dr. Adutwum stressed that Ghana can develop and prosper if the right steps are taken.

“That is why I don’t agree with those who say Ghana can never get better. If we adopt the right formulas and take them seriously, Ghana will develop,” he added.

Whether or not Adutwum will contest NPP flagbearer race [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/whether-or-not-adutwum-will-contest-npp-flagbearer-race-listen/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 17:08:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545710

Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has subtly hinted at his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

The former Education Minister stated that he sees many opportunities in Ghana and believes it will take a determined and competent leader to fully harness them.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Adutwum declared that he has no doubt he possesses the qualities needed to drive Ghana’s development.

“Your vision must scare you—if not, you are not changing your country. You are setting a growth rate that is so high, but that is what the economists are telling you you must have to develop your country.

“Then you are looking for people who are competent, fully determined that the course of the history of their nation will be better because they came—and with that sense of determination, I have no doubt in my mind,” he stated.

He added that in the coming days, he will address the lingering question on the minds of many Ghanaians to clear all doubts.

“I have no doubt in my mind that opportunities abound. To what extent can we utilise them? How are we using the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA)? The Chinese are promising to give us free tariffs—how are we going to use that? In any country, we would have had guidance centres,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum also revealed plans to convert the Business Resource Centres, established by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, into “Prosperity Centres” to provide solutions and guidance to promote economic growth.

Although he has yet to officially declare his intent, former NPP Chairman for the Fomena Constituency, Kwasi Nti, recently endorsed him as the best candidate.

This open declaration—made on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem show—has attracted public attention, especially given that Kwasi Nti is widely known to be politically aligned with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections.

A distinguished Ghanaian educationist, Dr. Adutwum, received a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California’s 37th Congressional District, commending his decades-long service and dedication to improving educational opportunities for underserved communities.

The certificate reads in part: “On behalf of California’s 37th Congressional District, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum for his exceptional service in education in the inner community of South Los Angeles.”

It further states, “Your unwavering commitment to New Designs Charter Schools has made a lasting impact on my congressional district.”

The certificate of recognition was presented to Dr. Adutwum during the graduation ceremony of the 2025 graduating class of New Designs Charter School in Los Angeles.

He was the special guest of honour and keynote speaker at the event, which brought together students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to celebrate the academic achievements of the graduating class.

Dr. Adutwum is the founder of New Designs Charter Schools, a tuition-free public charter school network established over 20 years ago to serve students in grades 6 through 12.

Located in the heart of urban Los Angeles, the school offers a career-based, college-preparatory curriculum that has transformed the academic journeys of thousands of students from underserved communities.

Under his leadership, New Designs Charter Schools have grown into a thriving educational model focused on equity, innovation, and excellence.

The recognition by Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove, serves as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of his vision and leadership in American education.

It was this same passion and proven success in educational reform that caught the attention of then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who later invited Dr. Adutwum to contribute to the transformation of Ghana’s education sector.

Initially hesitant, Dr. Adutwum eventually accepted the call to serve, first, as a deputy minister for education and later as the substantive minister.

During his tenure in Ghana, Dr. Adutwum was instrumental in the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School Policy, one of the flagship initiatives of the Akufo-Addo administration.

He is widely credited with the introduction of the Double Track System, a strategic innovation that allowed Ghana’s education system to accommodate the significant increase in student enrollment brought about by the policy.

As a minister, Dr. Adutwum championed a bold and ambitious agenda to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Under his leadership, several new STEM schools equipped with cutting-edge science and computer laboratories were established across the country.

These institutions are designed to prepare Ghanaian students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, positioning them for success in a rapidly evolving global economy.

Dr. Adutwum’s legacy in both the United States and Ghana underscores his enduring belief in education as a powerful tool for social mobility and national development.

His recognition in the U.S. reaffirms the global relevance of his work and the far-reaching impact of his dedication to educational transformation.

Tone down on ‘slash and burn’ politics – Dr. Adutwum urges https://www.adomonline.com/tone-down-on-slash-and-burn-politics-dr-adutwum-urges/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 06:21:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522325 Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has entreated political leaders and actors to shift away from what he terms “slash and burn” politics to collectively drive national development.

According to him, the ideas of opposing parties should not be rejected solely because a ruling government disagrees or seeks to score cheap political points.

Dr. Adwutum observed that some political opponents often criticise government policies and projects, not because they are inherently bad, but to score political points.

“Sometimes, your opponents know what you’re doing is right, but they may say it’s bad in order to score political points. I’ve always said that E-blocks were a good thing, but if the location is not suitable for a Day School, I will add a dormitory block so that the building becomes useful to the community,” he said.

Speaking to JoyNews during a TEKTALK event organised by the Students’ Representative Council of the KNUST, Dr. Adutwum suggested a bipartisan approach to critical national initiatives.

“If we have some critical national commissions in the future, let’s look at how we can do bi-partisan representation, where if the party in power selects three people, the party that is not in power can select two,” he proposed.

The TEKTALK event was under the theme: “Pioneering National Transformation through Politics, Finance, and Entertainment”.

Sharing his thoughts on the role of politics in driving national transformation, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe emphasised that politics can be a “force for good” and explained how he used his political career to make a difference.

“I sponsored 150 students in my constituency to become engineers and doctors. I also championed STEM education, and now STEM is a household word. And so, politics can be a ‘force for good’ for national transformation,” said Dr. Osei-Adutwum.

Founder and CEO of 3Music Network, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, also spoke on the role of the entertainment industry in driving national transformation.

According to him, politics plays a foundational role in creating an environment for economic growth.

“Politics sets the tone and avenue for national transformation. Creating a political environment is the genesis of having a very strong economy. If politics sets the tone, everything else can be built on it, including finance,” said Baba Sadiq.

This decision allows WAEC additional time to complete the marking process while optimizing its financial resources.

Dr. Adutwum’s announcement is part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure seamless operations in the education sector.

To alleviate financial constraints, the Ministry of Education recently released an additional GH₵25 million to WAEC to support its operations and enhance efficiency.

Dr. Adutwum noted that WAEC has completed 50% of the objective marking and assured the public that results would be released as scheduled.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, December 24, the Minister expressed confidence in the measures taken to uphold the integrity of the examination process.

He hinted at a provisional release date of December 28 or 29, 2024, with final results expected by the end of January.

“I came to apprise myself of developments and confirm that they are working through the holidays to release the results on or before the 29th of this month. I observed the workers diligently marking, with nearly 50% of the objectives already completed,” Dr. Adutwum stated.

Entrance exams to replace BECE when Free SHS bill is passed – Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/entrance-exams-to-replace-bece-when-free-shs-bill-is-passed-dr-yaw-osei-adutwum/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 18:10:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2431143 Ghana’s Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced that, in the future, basic-level students will no longer write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) but will instead take entrance exams to advance to the Senior High School (SHS).

Speaking in an exclusive interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday, August 8, 2024, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum emphasized that, in the 21st century, completing Senior High School (SHS) is crucial, and that is where certificate exams will be taken, not at the junior high level.

Dr. Adutwum explained that, the Free Secondary Education Bill provides for government-funded resources to ensure free, quality secondary education for all children.

Under this bill, Junior High School (JHS) is classified as lower secondary and will no longer be part of basic schools, effectively giving Ghana a six-year secondary education system.

He noted that lower secondary schools can operate separately but will offer equal opportunities for learning as senior high schools.

The Education Minister stated that, making secondary education compulsory eliminates the need for the BECE as a certificate exam.

Responding to recommendations from Africa Education Watch to include a compulsory subject on basic practical agriculture in the SHS curriculum reform, Dr. Adutwum suggested that this could be part of the lower secondary curriculum, exposing students to agriculture and helping them decide to pursue it further in upper secondary school.

Dr Adutwum to speak on the State of Education on Tuesday https://www.adomonline.com/dr-adutwum-to-speak-on-the-state-of-education-on-tuesday/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 11:00:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2427102 The Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, will provide an update on the state of education in the country at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Tuesday morning.

The event, which is expected to attract all stakeholders in the education sector, would showcase the significant progress made in the education sector since Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assumed office as the President of the Republic of Ghana.

Among the major issues he will speak on are Nana Akufo-Addo’s flagship Free Senior High School policy, new bills and policies, the physical transformation of schools throughout the country, and curriculum improvement, including the Standard-Based Curriculum, Secondary Curriculum, and STEM Curriculum, among others.

Evidence-Based Communication

As typical of him, the Minister is expected to support his presentation with pictures, short videos, and charts that will ignite national discussions on what the government has done and what is being done to train 21st-century graduates for the country.

Again, it would give all the stakeholders first-hand information on the various innovations, interventions, policies, and initiatives that have been introduced under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Background

Education development has remained a major priority of the government since it came to power in 2017.

It is based on this that the government keeps approving huge budgets to fund education to ensure that all Ghanaian children of school age, irrespective of location, ethnic background, religion, and financial status of parents, among other things, have access to quality, relevant, and equitable education from kindergarten to Senior High School.

The training of the right manpower remains a critical tool for the transformation of every economy.

The Nana Akufo-Addo-led government, through the Education Ministry and its agencies, has introduced several policies since 2017, which have changed the state of education in the country, making Ghana the first port of call when it comes to education development in Africa.

Adutwum expresses willingness to be Bawumia’s running mate if selected https://www.adomonline.com/adutwum-expresses-willingness-to-be-bawumias-running-mate-if-selected/ Tue, 09 Jan 2024 14:46:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2339796 Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has said he is ready to serve as the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, in the 2024 presidential elections.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday, January 9, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe affirmed his willingness to contribute his services to Ghana whenever called upon.

“I am here to serve my nation, in any capacity I find myself I will serve this nation,” he said.

The race for Dr Bawumia’s running mate is very tight with NPP bigwigs including Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu being the leading contenders.

The NPP in December last year gave its flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, more time to consult broadly to come up with his running mate for the 2024 general election.

Education Minister to hold meeting with publishers over controversial history textbook indicting Christianity https://www.adomonline.com/education-minister-to-hold-meeting-with-publishers-over-controversial-history-textbook-indicting-christianity/ Fri, 26 May 2023 14:57:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2253707

The Education Ministry is set to hold a discussion with Excellence Publications, a publishing company, regarding the publication of a controversial textbook that presents negative content about Christianity.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, expressed his disapproval of the textbook and expressed surprise that it had entered the public domain.

“Apostle Nyamekye sent me the book, and immediately I called NaCCA [National Council for Curriculum and Assessment] to report it. I was informed that NaCCA had approved the book but not its content. They had actually removed everything from the book when they realised that the content was sensitive. Therefore, we are shocked to see it in circulation after same content was rejected by NaCCA,” Dr Adutwum stated.

He further mentioned that they have requested a meeting with the authors to understand how the book was released to the public despite being initially rejected.

Dr Adutwum emphasised that the information contained in the book is unacceptable, stating, “As an elder, I will not allow such sensitive information. Publishers are expected to comply with the laws, not flout them.”

Following the discovery of the circulating textbook, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has demanded its immediate recall.

The textbook in question, titled “History of Ghana for Basic Schools – Learners’ Book Four,’ published by Excellence Publications, has been clarified by NaCCA to not accurately reflect the approved curriculum.

Parts of the controversial textbook falsely assert that Christianity is responsible for poverty and claims that religion has incited physical conflicts both in Ghana and worldwide.

Dr Adutwum strongly disagreed with the content of the book, highlighting the positive contributions of Christianity in the world.

He urged the public to disregard the textbook.

“The role of Christianity is very vast. It has helped us in so many ways and even shaped Europe into what it is today.”

Regarding potential sanctions for the publishers’ violation of laws, Dr Adutwum mentioned that they are awaiting a meeting with them to decide the appropriate course of action.

He emphasized that the Ghana Education Service does not include such textbooks in any school and confirmed that they will seek clarification from NaCCA before distributing any textbook.

I was ashamed when I saw ‘Ghana’s schools of shame’ documentary – Education Minister https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-ashamed-when-i-saw-ghanas-schools-of-shame-documentary-education-minister/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 08:39:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2209026 Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says he felt embarrassed by JoyNews’ ‘Schools of Shame’ documentary.

His shame, he said, stems from the fact that there are many positive stories about the strides Ghana is making in spite of the challenges that the documentary could have focused on, but the journalists chose to expose the acute lack of school infrastructure in some basic schools, as contained in the documentary.

‘Ghana’s Schools of Shame’ is a feature series on the JoyNews Channel that highlights the country’s education infrastructure challenges in three districts of the country.

The Krachi Nchumuru District, for example, has 68 public basic schools. About 45 percent of the schools are in terrible shape. Over 7,000 children have no furniture.

The situation is not different in the Kpandai District where many of the children lie on the bare floor to take lessons and examinations.

Speaking at the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Awards ceremony on Wednesday, the Minister said despite the great things happening in the country, the documentary only sought to project the negatives in the education sector of the country to the global world.

He argued that there are students who are “coming from schools of fame” in Ghana and have been able to win awards.

“Recently I saw some TV programming where they were talking about Ghana’s School of Shame and I was ashamed, because of all the great things happening in the country, we want to focus on the negative and get the world to know that there are negative things in Ghana

“Can you look straight in the eye of these children and tell me they are coming from schools of shame? They are coming from schools of fame. They are going to change the story of Ghana,” he pontificated.

The Minister, while admitting that indeed the country is faced with many challenges, stressed that the young men and women of the country are determined to transform Ghana. Thus, there must be a spotlight on the great things happening in the country.

“If we should take a cue, we should rather do a programme that highlights these young men and women and tell the world Ghana is moving. It is part of the challenges. Yes, there are challenges but I tell you this, the children of Ghana are so well-prepared to be the best in the world.”
