Born on Monday, February 22, 1982, in Bosuso, Eastern Region of Ghana, Samuel’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a formidable force in Ghana’s entrepreneurial and political landscape is nothing short of inspirational.

A Legacy of Excellence

Samuel Apea-Danquah, 42, hails from a family deeply rooted in education and leadership. Early Education and Academic Achievements

Samuel’s educational journey began at the prestigious Achimota Primary and JSS School, where his academic brilliance began to shine. In 1997, he gained admission to Tema Secondary School, a period during which his passion for science and technology blossomed. Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng writes : My Kwame Nkrumah https://www.adomonline.com/prof-kwabena-frimpong-boateng-writes-my-kwame-nkrumah/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 11:58:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2422287 Nana Kwame Appiah, my grandfather, was the Adontenhene of Toase in Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region when the famous Chief Owusu, the father of the equally famous Nana Akwasi Agyeman, was the Chief of Toase.

Nana Kwame Appiah was a diehard UP supporter. He bought a Peugeot Caravan for the party. As far as I can remember, certainly from the age of four, he told us about the United Party and mentioned names such as Baffour Akoto, Kofi Busia, Chief Dombo, B.F. Kusi and many more. I did not hear anything positive about the “CPP”.

This was what he called Nkrumah’s CPP. The whole extended family followed our Patriarch and became members or sympathizers of the United Party and its traditions.

Later on in life, I began to appreciate the works of Kwame Nkrumah. I believe that Nkrumah should be seen not only in terms of the physical things he built, which were massive and no one else came near him, but also in terms of how he affected human lives.

Undoubtedly, he was the most important person in the fight for Ghana’s independence and also mentored several African leaders fighting for independence in their respective countries. He brought hope to the Black people everywhere on the globe.

Nkrumah championed the concept of African Personality when he declared that: “The African must assert his own personality and develop according to his own ways of life, his own customs, traditions and culture.”

I do not like everything Nkrumah did. But then, I do not even like everything I do myself. Such is the fallibility of man.

During Nkrumah’s reign, Ghanaians were respected throughout the world. Ghanaians who studied abroad returned home immediately after their studies to take up positions to help build Ghana with a sense of pride.

Sub-Saharan Africans abroad all portrayed themselves as Ghanaians. Everybody was proud to be associated with Ghana. Ghanaians were held in high esteem throughout the world.

Unlike today, when young Ghanaians are struggling to travel abroad to seek greener pastures because of harsh economic conditions, due to corruption and mismanagement. Nobody dared to lay his hand on a Ghanaian.

In our days, we have witnessed the slaying of Ghanaians in many parts of the world, including The Gambia and Nigeria.

Nkrumah did all he could to eliminate tribalism and promoted loyalty to the State of Ghana. This position is exemplified by a statement he made in his book, Africa Must Unite: “We were engaged in a kind of war, a war against poverty and disease, against ignorance, against tribalism and disunity.

We needed to secure the conditions which could allow us to pursue our policy of reconstruction and development.”

Through the Ghana Education Trust Nkrumah established secondary schools in all parts of Ghana. This enabled poor children, including me, to access secondary education.

Again, Nkrumah established the Ghana Medical School against all odds and made it possible for me and thousands of Ghanaian young women and men to be trained as doctors in Ghana. The vital role that doctors trained in Ghana have played in the development of Ghana is evident to all.

Kwame Nkrumah established the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) to develop and promote the peaceful utilization of nuclear, biotechnology, and other related technologies for socioeconomic development through research, training, and commercialization, and also to advise the government on policies related to the peaceful applications of these technologies.

Although GAEC has had a chequered history through coup d’état, misrule, political ignorance, and neglect by governments, through its institutions such as the Biotechnology & Agricultural Research Institute (BNARI), Ghana Space Science & Technology Institute (GSSTI), Graduate School of Nuclear & Allied Sciences (GNAS), National Nuclear Research Institute (NRI), Nuclear Power Institute (NPI), Radiation Protection Institute (RPI), Radiological & Medical Sciences Research Institute (RMSRIS), it has advanced to become one of the scientific and research institutions spearheading the development of this country.

Kwame Nkrumah established the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cape Coast University and the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Komfo Anokye Hospital.

Nkrumah did not have a sufficient number of technocrats – doctors, engineers, architects, scientists, etc. and the greatest of all tools, the computer, the internet, G.P.S., scanners, mobile phones, etc. were not available. But, think about what he did with the little that was available to him.

None of the detractors of Nkrumah has written a single book.

There were at least 8 attempts on his life in the following locations: Dodowa Vilas, Railway Station Annex, UAC Motors, Accra Stadium, Kumasi Assembly Hall, Flag Staff House, and Kulungugu and around the main ministries in Accra.

Nkrumah is dead and gone. However, he has relatives and children, and the legacy of Nkrumah, a global icon, must be respected. Nkrumah’s greatness and his unparalleled contribution to Ghana and Africa were sealed when, in the year 2000, he was voted African Man of the Millennium by a BBC World Service listeners’ poll. Danquah-Busia tradition worked with external intelligence to overthrow Nkrumah – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/danquah-busia-tradition-worked-with-external-intelligence-to-overthrow-nkrumah-mahama/ Sat, 25 Feb 2023 15:54:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2221752 Former president John Dramani Mahama has accused faithful of the Danquah-Busia tradition of the overthrow of Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

According to him, the Danquah-Busia tradition, from which the New Patriotic Party was formed, connived with agents outside the country to oust Nkrumah in 1966.

Mr Mahama said the uprising destroyed Nkrumah’s vision for Ghana and the entirety of the African continent.

The former President made these remarks in a Facebook post while commemorating the 57th anniversary of the 1966 coup on Friday.

He said: “57 years ago today, 24th February 1966, the Danquah-Busia political tradition conspired with external intelligence agencies to initiate Ghana’s first coup d’etat, which toppled the government of our first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“This coup was achieved through a conscious and constant campaign of falsehood and calumny.”

He added that “as a former President of Ghana who has also been at the receiving end of the Danquah-Busia tradition’s campaign of slander and sabotage, I can empathise completely with the quandary President Nkrumah found himself in.”

Mr Mahama went on to say that “In 1966, I was a young boy still in primary school. But I remember highlights of the dark days that followed the February 24, 1966 coup”.

The former President used the occasion to urge Ghanaians to remain loyal to the country’s democratic path.

He also seized the opportunity to entreat African leaders to remain true to the tenets of democratic governance.

“As today marks 57 years of that coup d’etat, I call on all fellow Ghanaians and our patriotic security agencies and armed forces to mark this day as one of reflection and to remain loyal to the 1992 Constitution as we begin the task of rescuing our dear nation from the dark pit the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has plunged us into.

“I further urge all Africans to give meaningful democracy a chance, the very reason for which I am presently here in Nigeria as Head of the West African Elders Forum on an election mediation mission, as the country votes on Saturday,” the statement concluded.

Reactions of Danquah-Busia activists

Meanwhile, members of the Danquah-Busia tradition have consistently refuted the claims that they played a central role in Ghana’s first coup d’état.

Repeatedly, they have stressed that such assertions are false and should not be associated with the late Dr J.B Danquah or the late Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia.

In one of such rebuttals a few years ago, the then Director of the Danquah-Busia Institute, Gabby Otchere-Darko, took offence when a former Communications Minister, Dr Omane Boamah made that allegation on Newsfile.

In anger, Mr Otchere-Darko walked off the stage, describing the comments as ‘stupid’.

Here’s a video recording of that altercation:

According to him, it was not because his dad, Dr Nkrumah was a womaniser but it was due to his busy schedule.

He explained a big age difference between them was another factor that accounted for the difficulty.

“There was also a big difference of age between them! Nkrumah’s official birth is 1909, while that of Fathia is 1935!,” he wrote.

He said this in a Facebook post as he reacts to Emma Florence Yaa Adinyira Amedahe’s interview on the relationship that existed between the couple.

CPP sets up committee to probe anti-Nkrumah textbooks https://www.adomonline.com/cpp-sets-up-committee-to-probe-anti-nkrumah-textbooks/ Tue, 16 Mar 2021 15:27:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1934076 The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has set up a four-member committee to meet with publishers of the controversial new textbooks, which they say seek to malign Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and twist the history of Ghana as well.

The leadership of the CPP was livid at how the new textbooks are alleged to have described the first President of the Republic of Ghana as a dictator.

General Secretary, Nana Yaa Akyimpim Jantuah, disclosed on Onua FM that the committee has been tasked to meet with the publishers and conduct an investigation into how they developed the content.

The committee, she said, is also tasked to meet with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment to establish their input and subject their consent for the publication of the textbooks to investigation.

The former Public Affairs Director of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), inferred that the textbooks are conflict-ridden and only seek to distort Ghana’s history, bring division and destroy CPP.

She said it must be condemned.

She also believes that the publishers are deliberately denigrating some personalities, parties and ethnic groups and that calls for a proper investigation to be done.

She, therefore, called on the government to set up a committee within the Ministry of Education to investigate and find the root cause or source of the misconception.

How Nkrumah was overthrown by young soldier he tried to empower https://www.adomonline.com/how-nkrumah-was-overthrown-by-young-soldier-he-tried-to-empower/ Thu, 06 Aug 2020 19:06:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1837147 At a hall in Adisadel College in Cape Coast in 1955, stood the 19-year-old-tall-young-brilliant Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa awaiting the a handshake and congratulatory words from Ghana’s first Prime Minister, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

He was to receive the congratulations for having collected seven prizes in Latin, Greek, Religious Knowledge, History, English Language and Geography.

A proud Dr Nkrumah shook the hands of young Afrifa and congratulated him for his brilliance.

It is alleged that Dr Nkrumah, having been awed by the academic prowess of young Afrifa sponsored his education but little did he know that the young gentleman he sought to empower, would be the one to help in the overthrow of his six-year-old government.

As fate would have it, Afrifa would, eleven (11) years later, join forces with Colonel Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka and the then Inspector-General of Police, Mr. J.W.K. Harley to overthrow Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Lieutenant General A.A. Afrifa after the coup led by General Kotoka consolidated his positions in both the military and the National Liberation Council (NLC) which became the government after the coup.

He later became the head of State after the assassination of General Kotoka in April 1967 during an abortive coup, and the resignation of Lt. General Joseph Ankrah in April 1969 as the head of State.
