The directive, communicated to ministers in a circular issued on July 11, follows a resolution passed by the church’s Executive Presbytery at its May 2024 meeting.

Church leaders explained that the decision aligns with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) regulations on the recognition of academic qualifications.

According to the directive, pastors who have been awarded honorary doctorates—whether from accredited or unaccredited institutions—are prohibited from styling themselves as “Dr.”

Additionally, ministers with earned academic degrees such as bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD qualifications have been advised to submit their certificates to GTEC for authentication before formal recognition can be granted.

The Assemblies of God warned that ministers who defy the directive or breach GTEC’s requirements will face disciplinary measures, including suspension from office.

To set an example, the church cited its General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Wengam, who announced last year that although he had received an honorary doctorate, he no longer uses the “Dr.” title. Leaders urged other pastors to follow his lead to uphold transparency in ministry.

The announcement comes amid GTEC’s heightened enforcement against the misuse of academic and honorary titles.

Mrs. Siaw Agyepong used the occasion to encourage others to pursue purpose-driven leadership, leaving a lasting legacy of positive change.

The Nollywood veteran was honored with a Doctorate in Literature, a Doctorate in Arts, and a lifetime achievement award by ISTM University, Togo, during a ceremony.

A video that surfaced online captured the moment representatives from the international university visited Pete Edochie at his home to bestow these prestigious accolades upon him.

The awards serve as a tribute to his significant contributions to the creative industry over the years.

One of the representatives said the motivation behind conferring these honors is due to Pete Edochie’s pioneering role in the entertainment industry and his influence on younger generation of artists.

They were conferred the Degree of Divinity Celebration by the Divine Believers Network International in conjunction with Pedrus Fedei Seminary, both in the United States of America.

As part of the event, a durbar was held in their ruling land, Kuntunse R/C church on Saturday August 6.

Special guest was the Otumfuo Hiahene, Oheneba Prof. Boakye Agyei, as well as a host of other celebrities including gospel artistes.

The Kumawood fraternity also came in their numbers to support their senior colleague.

After the scheduled event, gospel artistes took turns to deliver praises to God on behalf of the royal couple.

The award was given to her for her exceptional contribution in the Journalism and towards mankind.
