Allotey Jacobs wades into ‘Ken must Go’ saga [Audio] https://www.Adomonline.com/allotey-jacobs-wades-into-ken-must-go-saga-audio/ Fri, 17 Feb 2023 19:15:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2218282

Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has said President Nana Akufo-Addo will not sack Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to the social commentator, the final decision lies solely with the President despite the numerous calls.

However, there is no way Akufo-Addo will sack Mr Ofori-Atta due to their relationship.

“Ken must go but that depends on the president. If you were in the shoes of the president, what would you have done? Will you have sacked your own brother? ” he quizzed on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He likened the current situation to blood monarchy as well as bloodline inheritance and dynasty through which he noted a leader succeeds.

“Akufo-Addo’s mother is a sister of Ofori-Atta’s father. Gabby’s mum is a sister of Akufo-Addo’s mum. So when you are given any position, won’t your people enjoy? It is not about what you know in Ghana but who you know and we have all enjoyed such opportunities and we should stop this hypocrisy,” he stated.

According to the Minority, the call of their colleagues is a step in the right direction and they expect that President Nana Akufo-Addo acts upon it.

Bia East Member of Parliament (MP) and member of the Finance Committee, Richard Acheampong, made these comments on Adom FM’s Kaisebo is Tasty.

The NPP MPs at a press conference on Tuesday impressed on the President to relieve his cousin of managing the national purse or risk losing their support for government business going forward.

They disclosed their sentiments reflect the position of most of the NPP members in the House.

Spokesperson, Andy Appiah-Kubi and Asante Akim North MP who addressed the briefing threatened that the Majority will not participate in any government business including the budget hearing until their demands were met.

But to Mr Acheampong, the Majority should have called for a dissolution of the entire Economic Management Team (EMT) as well as Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s sack.

“We commend them on the move but we believe the EMT must be dissolved. Bawumia must be sacked because Ken Ofori-Atta cannot go without Bawumia. They are responsible for our woes,” he said.

In this regard, the lawmaker said the Minority in the coming days will also hold a press conference to share their sentiments with Ghanaians.

5 catholic priests sacked over alleged insubordination https://www.Adomonline.com/5-catholic-priests-sacked-over-alleged-insubordination/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 15:15:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170843 The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese in Anambra State, Nigeria, Right Reverend Jonas Benson Okoye, has dismissed five priests in his diocese over alleged insubordination.

The five priests of St Martin of Tours, Ihiala, had reportedly been having a running battle with the bishop over their residency in the parish.

According to reports, trouble started when the bishop had ejected the priests from the parsonage of the church following an administrative rearrangement aimed at creating a new parish in the area.

The priests, who were said to have claimed that their order had been in possession of the parish for over 100 years, refused the order of the bishop to vacate the parish for new priests sent to the church.

Following their refusal to vacate their parish, the Bishop wrote a letter withdrawing their canonical faculties (authorities to perform acts or function in the parish).

Speaking to journalists in Ozubulu in Ekwusigo local government area, a former director of communication of Nnewi Diocese, Reverend Father Hyginus Aghaulo, said ”the Spiritans claim that Archbishop Heerey gave it (parish) to them in 1967. That was under 1917 Code but Canon 6 of 1983 Code abrogated 1917 Code unless such matters are renewed in 1983 Code but there is no evidence that such happened.”

He added. “Thirdly, 1983 Code abolished making a moral person now juridic person a pastor. Now to be appointed a pastor, the person must be a physical person and be in priesthood.

Even if a parish is given to a juridic person even in soliduum, the diocesan Bishop must appoint one of them the proper pastor.”

“Fourthly, under 1917 Code, when such grant was instituted, there was an express need for apostolic indult in order to have the character of perpetuity.

The 1983 Code gives the discretion and right of free conferral on diocesan bishops and those equivalent to them in law in line with canons 368 and 381, in the spiritual task of appointing pastors.

Thus, the diocesan can freely appoint and freely fire. He can freely create and freely suppress parishes without recourse to existing customs, grants and centennial or immemorial bequests and grants.”

Aghaulo maintained that religious institutes by virtue of their juridic personality were not distinctively and naturally destined for parish administration but for the living of evangelical counsel in their communities and convents, unlike diocesan or secular priests whose destiny and nativity was to administer parishes.

He said in the Ihiala case, “Bishop Jonas Benson Okoye is a successor of Archbishop Heerey and so, has power to interpret or alter the perpetuity clause in such a convention because of “salvation of souls is the supreme law.

Aghaulo disclosed that the development had been reported to the Superior General whose duty it is to supervise the priests.

Decision to fire ministers depends on my judgement – Akufo-Addo https://www.Adomonline.com/decision-to-fire-ministers-depends-on-my-judgement-akufo-addo/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 12:41:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2159939 The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said he would not rely solely on public opinion to sack his ministers.

He said while he listens to public opinion, which was crucial in a democracy, the decision to fire or not to fire someone was his to make.

He said his ministers are assessed on a daily basis and when he is satisfied that someone is not working hard enough, he would act on it.

“If I am satisfied that the output is still strong, I know what to do,” he stated, adding that at the end of the day, he had to make the judgement whether or not one should stay on or go.

Calls for Finance Minister’s sack

He said this in particular reference to the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who people had continuously called for his dismissal.

The President said Mr Ofori-Atta was the same person who took the country out of the IMF programme and worked to push the economy from 3.4 per cent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth to about seven per cent.

The President made the remarks in a radio interview on Obaatampa FM at Kasoa, as part of his working visit to the Central Region and monitored by the Daily Graphic.

He said it was worrying that people had forgotten Mr Ofori-Atta’s efforts due to the economic challenges the country is going through.

The President said he believes Mr Ofori-Atta had the same determination to bring the economy back on track.

He said Ghana is certain to come out of its economic crisis.

President Akufo-Addo said his government took over an economy in crisis and managed to double its GDP growth from 3.4 per cent to about seven per cent and repositioned the economy to one of the fastest growing ones.

COVID/ war effect

He said it was unfortunate that the COVID pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war had disrupted not only the Ghanaian economy but the world economy.

He noted for instance that in November last year, the government budgeted realistically with estimates of $64 a barrel for crude oil.

This year, he noted, the price of crude had been over $100 a barrel, while freight rates had shot up significantly affecting badly the economy, which also depended heavily on imports.

He noted that the issue was not the difficulties but how to get out of them, adding that he was determined that by the time he leaves office, the economy would be back on track, saying it was the only way he could help his party to break the eight.

Thank you

He thanked the people of the Central Region for their support for the party, saying the New Patriotic Party is the party capable of bringing accelerated development to the region and the country as a whole.

Sack GES Director-General – NPP guru to Akufo-Addo https://www.Adomonline.com/sack-ges-director-general-npp-guru-to-akufo-addo/ Tue, 26 Jul 2022 12:02:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2142110 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr George Ayisi Boateng, has called for the dismissal of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

According to the former Ghana High Commissioner to South Africa, the GES Director, Prof Opoku Amankwa, does not have the interest of the NPP government at heart and has lost touch with what they stand for.

This comes after Prof Amankwa indicated a review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy was underway.

He explained the exercise is to determine which of the cost components government can relinquish to parents to pay.

“We can do the analysis and then come up and say that, okay, to give Raymond quality education, it will cost this much. Within that cost, these are the items in the cost.

“Then we will all put it out there and say this item, we can make do of it, and it will not affect quality, this item, I think we can get parents to pay,” he told host of Joy News’ Upfront, Raymond Acquah.

But presenting the 2022 Mid-Year Budget Review to Parliament for approval, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, said the government will continue to fund and improve the policy.

Dr George Ayisi Boateng, Former Ghana High Commissioner to South Africa/ Leading member of NPP

Reacting to Prof Amankwa’s comments, Dr Ayisi has stated it clearly contradicts the government’s position on the policy.

“The GES Director-General is to help resolve problems in our schools and if President Akufo-Addo will listen to me, he should be sacked and I will ask the Education Minister to also push for that. He is not a team leader and player,” he said on Accra-based Okay FM.

He added there are a lot of men and women in the NPP who can equally take up the position and deliver to perfection.

“We are a lot in the NPP; we have the men and women and every wolf in sheep’s clothing must be fired from the government; he is not supporting our course, it will not help the people of Ghana, the Education Minister and he must therefore be fired,” he added.

Head of Public Sector Reforms proposes dismissal of ‘alcoholic workers’ https://www.Adomonline.com/head-of-public-sector-reforms-proposes-dismissal-of-alcoholic-workers/ Tue, 22 Mar 2022 22:50:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2094469 Head of Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo, has proposed the dismissal of ‘alcoholic public sector workers’ because their productivity is negligible.

According to him, they do not contribute to the country’s development yet, they are being accounted for on payroll.

Mr Boafo’s case is not against occasional drinkers, but drunkards who cannot work effectively and their absence at work would not reduce productivity.

He proposed the government should dismiss such workers to create space for healthier and more productive workers to help improve production rate in the country.

Workers with severe health conditions were also not spared in the interview he had with Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom on Adom FM’s Burning Issues.

“I think the public sector is too huge for me I am the head of public sector, there are a lot of workers who do not work but they are on pay roll. Workers who drink alcohol and those with health conditions are not supposed to be on pay roll, they don’t make any impact.

“I don’t think such workers would still be at post if they are in private sector, they would have been sacked by now”.

The President of the Drunkards Association of Ghana, Moses Onya, popularly known as Dry Bone, supported Mr Thomas Kusi Boafo’s suggestion.

He indicated that though some youth seek comfort in alcoholism due to hardship, they must consume responsibly.

He opposes the act of taking alcohol during work hours and for that matter urged the government to sack such workers.

“I support his proposal, so many people drink alcohol as a result of hardship but abusing it is what we are not in support off. Although some people take alcohol to boost their energy towards work if you take so much of it, you won’t be able to work as expected,” he added.

According to him, he is still at post and has not received any letter with regards to the purported dismissal.

Reports were rife on Friday, July 2, 2021, about Mr Bamba’s dismissal, following the death of some three persons in the area.

They include social media activist, Ibrahim Mohammed aka ‘Kaaka Macho’ who was beaten by assailants till he became unconscious and they absconded.

His death angered the youth of Ejura who went on a protest in the community on Monday evening, demanding justice and continued on Tuesday.

However, a combined police-military team deployed to maintain peace and order reportedly fired shots into the crowd, killing two people and four injured.

But reacting to the dismissal and many allegations levelled against him over the incident, he said it is a figment of people’s imagination.

“From last week there were reports linking me to murder, then it was reported that I’d fled town, it was then again reported that I’ve been arrested and then today it is reported that I’ve been sacked.

“This shows that there’s a deliberate agenda by my detractors to defame me and get me out of office. I pity the online portals that have allowed their mediums to be used to peddle falsehood,” Mr Bamba said in an interview on Ejura-based Naagyei FM.

Meanwhile, the government has constituted a three-member committee to within 10 days investigate the incident and submit its report with appropriate recommendations.

This is expected to reach President Nana Akufo-Addo not later than July 9, 2021.

ECG MD breaks silence on calls for his dismissal https://www.Adomonline.com/ecg-md-breaks-silence-on-calls-for-his-dismissal/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 13:08:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1948425 The Managing Director (MD) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Kwame Agyeman-Budu has described allegations levelled against him by the Unions as untrue.

The Junior and Senior Staff Unions of the Company had petitioned the Board for the dismissal of the MD, claiming he was not discharging his duties effectively.

The Unions alleged that the MD had been in office for close to two years and had shown lack of vision for the Company.

He promoted the outsourcing of the collection of revenue from Special Load Tariff (SLT) customers to third parties at a commission of seven percent discounted rate and three per cent consulting fee, a service that was executed effectively by staff and other institutions for free, the Union said.

It also alleged a number of procurement process breaches under the “clear supervision” of the MD and that the Company’s technical and commercial losses were galloping.

Mr Agyeman-Budu, in a response through the Ghana News Agency, said the allegations were untrue and that the Company, under his leadership, had initiated the one-day one-service for new meters for customers.

READ ALSO:

He said ECG was currently undergoing a new Wifi project, leveraging on government to connect ECG’s offices (regions, districts, customer service centres, substations) with the fibre.

Mr Agyeman-Budu said claims that he did not approve the provision of adequate materials for the Company’s operations was because there had been shortages due to the Covid-19 pandemic, adding; “Most companies from whom we buy these materials folded up and were not producing, hence the little stock left was exhausted.”

He said accusations that there were no accessories for vendors were unfounded because ECG did not buy accessories for vendors.

“What happens is that if you apply to be a vendor for ECG, you bring along your desktop machine to the ICT Directorate for the VPN to be installed onto it. Vendor buys a quota monthly and gets a percentage for selling power,” the MD said.

He said it was also not true that he stopped revenue mobilisation in June 2020, and explained that government subsidised electricity for some months and instructed that no form of revenue or disconnection of power should be done, with other companies like VRA, Ghana Water, and GRiDco, also adhering to the rules.

Mr Agyeman-Budu said it could not be true that he did not involve his three Deputy Managers in decision making, and that the “Deputy Managing Director Finance and Deputy Managing Director Human Resource are always around to advice and make positive suggestions on most of the things.”

Meanwhile, a Group of Concerned Staff of ECG, in a statement, corroborated the MD’s stance and said the call for his removal was “a mere orchestration of few individuals to serve their parochial interests.”

The Group said the MD was facing such opposition because he instituted “mystery shoppers” and continued to discipline and weed out bad nuts who extorted monies from customers.

It said the ECG, through prudent management, continued to meet its financial obligations to independent power producers (IPPs) and GRIDCO.

“These aforementioned entities, which used to complain about payments, do not any longer…It is now a thing of the past.”

According to the Minority spokesperson on Defense and Interior, James Agalga, the post-electoral violence and series of protests indicate the IGP’s power is being compromised.

Mr Agalga cited the five lives of unarmed civilians which were lost during and after the just ended elections as evidence.

Addressing the press in parliament today, Mr Agalga said failure by the appointing authority to do the needful, the IGP must do the honorable thing by resigning from his post.

Mr Agalga also justified the street protests of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters over what they described as a stolen 2020 verdict.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery has asked security agencies to crack the whip on illegal violent protesters challenging the outcome of the 2020 polls.

According to him, those engaging in such practices should conduct themselves in a peaceful manner devoid of the destruction of lives and property.

ALSO

The comments of the Interior Minister comes on the back of Thursday morning’s protest at the EC’s headquarters by some members of the opposition NDC which had to be dispersed by water cannons and tear gas.

Speaking to a section of the press, Mr Dery urged sympathisers of the NDC to resort to law courts and not the streets in seeking redress to their grievances.

Ambrose Dery added that investigations over shooting incidents that led to the loss of eight lives at the just ended polls were ongoing.

Below is the Mayor’s response on Facebook:

My response to the allegations made by Some NPP Executives in the tamale Metro.

The various allegations levelled against me by some Constituency Executives of the Tamale South and Central constituencies at their Press Conference this morning are TOTALLY FALSE. I  dismiss them with the contempt they deserve.

  1. The allegations that I fail to award contracts to the Constituency Executives is unfortunate. I have always in my line of work done what is right and lawful. Let me state categorically that, all contracts that have been awarded by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly went through the laid down procurement processes and procedures. They are not done unilaterally by me or anyone. Ghana is governed by a set of laws and all contracts are awarded via proper procurement processes. See the Public Procurement Act 2003 (663).
  2. On allegations that I do not consult the Party leadership in the Metro before taking decisions in my role in the Assembly’s mandate; I demand further and better details on this allegation. Decisions relating to the governance of the Metropolis usually take place collectively as a house

during which Elected Members and Government Appointees participate effectively in all discussions to either develop a policy, enact bye-laws. All MAJOR decisions of the Metropolitan Assembly are taken by the Executive Authority or the General House.

  1. Where Chiefs, imams, the clergy and other opinion leaders and political actors are expected to make an input on a decision, we create the platform for an open, deeper and wider consultative framework for such crucial interventions.
  2. On the allegation that, I port resources of the Tamale Metro Assembly to The Mion District Assembly because of my “Parliamentary ambition” in the Mion Constituency is not only weird but strange. How on earth will the Elected Assembly persons of the Tamale Metro Assembly sit down for this to happen? Such an outrageous allegation can only come from persons who have little understanding of how MMDAs operate.
  3. I remain focused on my mandate as the Metropolitan Chief Executive; leading and serving the people in the most honest, transparent and participatory manner and delivering on the vision of the NPP Government on education, health delivery and making the society fit for purpose.
  4. I will not be distracted by such empty allegations and sponsored attack.
  5. Thank you.

When the case was called on Friday, the presiding judge, Justice Gifty Dekyem directed both parties to a pre-trial conference and subsequent filing of witness statement on or before 13th of July, if no resolution is found at the pre- trial conference.

The dismissed staff sued the Attorney General on April 7, 2017, but the A-G failed to file a defence upon which the plaintiffs applied for a default judgement.

The default application was called on May 11, but the A-G failed to appear.

The court, therefore, adjourned the hearing to May 22, at which the A-G applied for extension of time within which to file its defence.

The AG’s statement of defence vehemently denied the claims of the plaintiffs.

Among other things, the plaintiffs claimed due process was followed having sighted publication of the vacancies in the Daily Graphic of October 10, 2016, went for interviews in November 2016 and were duly given appointment by the board of the scheme in December 2016.

The A-G refutes this assertion in that there was a petition by the administrator of the scheme, Rev. Simon McKandamah to the Public Services Commission at the time and has requested a stay on the recruitment for investigations to be concluded.

However, immediately after the elections, the plaintiffs were given appointment letters, based on this claims the AG argues that the recruitment did not follow due process.
