One of the deceased, identified as Peggy Ayelbassah, was a young woman reportedly on her way to Salaga for an interview at a nursing training college when the incident occurred.

The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, confirmed the unfortunate incident in a Facebook post.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah revealed that Peggy had reached out to him just a day before the attack through WhatsApp.

The shooting took place late Thursday when unknown gunmen opened fire on a vehicle passing through the area. Eyewitnesses reported hearing several gunshots, which sparked panic among residents.

Three other passengers sustained gunshot wounds and are currently being treated at the Offinso Saint Patrick Hospital.

Kwabena Asamoah, Unit Committee Chairman for the Denase Electoral Area, indicated that the incident may have been a planned assault rather than a random robbery.

“This didn’t seem like a robbery. It appeared more like a targeted attack. The way the shooting was done, it looked like they knew who they were after,” Mr. Asamoah told the media.

According to him, as many as 14 rounds were fired during the attack, further raising concerns about the level of violence.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway and that efforts are being made to apprehend those responsible.

One dead, soldier injured in bus shootout in Ashanti region https://www.adomonline.com/one-dead-soldier-injured-in-bus-shootout-in-ashanti-region/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 17:43:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559976 One person has been confirmed dead while a military officer has been injured after two gunmen opened fire on a Kumasi-Tamale-bound bus in the Denase Township in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti region.

Police suspect the two AK-47-wielding men trailed the Toyota minibus from its Adehyie Market station to the spot near the local Church of Pentecost building before firing indiscriminately at the bus.

Police suspect the attack may be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The deceased has been identified as Abiola, but the injured military officer is yet to be identified.

Police picked up both the Ghana card and health insurance card of the deceased at the scene.

Crime scene investigators from the Ashanti North Regional Police Command picked up fourteen spent shells at the scene.

Ashanti North Regional Police Commander DCOP Prince Jude Cobbinah, who confirmed the incident to Myjoyonline.com, said the armed men, one on each side of the road, opened fire on the Tamale-bound bus at about 9 p.m. on Thursday.

He said the attackers opened fire immediately after the driver slowed down at a speed hump in Denase in front of the local Church of Pentecost.

The driver, upon sensing danger, lowered his head to escape the onslaught.

The deceased, who was seated on the seat behind the driver, was hit by the bullets.

The military officer who was in the passenger seat at the front side of the bus was hit by the assailants.

According to DCOP Cobbinah, the driver mustered courage and sped off to the St. Patrick Catholic Hospital in Offinso, where the deceased was pronounced dead on arrival.

The shooting incident, which occurred near the Denase lorry station, saw bystanders running helter-skelter for their own lives.

This has prompted police to launch a manhunt for the assailants as security is beefed up in the area.

A Durango car with registration number GE 9300 Y veered off its lane and collided with a sprinter with registration number AS 8472 -13.

The accident, which occurred around 11:30 am yesterday, resulted in three hours of vehicular traffic on the Kumasi-Techiman road.

The Sprinter bus was heading towards Kumasi while the Durango was heading towards the Offinso side of the road.

Witnesses, who spoke to JoyNews, said the accident would have been deadlier if the driver was to be speeding.

When the news crew visited the accident scene, the sprinter car had been towed to allow free vehicular movement.

However, the Durango car was still at the scene but both passengers had been transpotred to the hospital for medical attention.

Residents expressed worry over the increasing reckless driving on the road in recent times. They want the authorities to increase their visibility on the stretch of road.
