The demonstration brought together farmers from districts including Sefwi Wiawso, Juaboso, and Bia West, who marched through principal streets holding placards with messages such as “Restore Our Price Now” and “Cocoa Sustains Ghana, Don’t Neglect Farmers.”

The farmers accused the government of failing to protect their livelihoods amid rising costs of farm inputs and labour. They argued that the sharp price reduction would make it difficult to maintain their farms, pay workers, and support their families.

Describing the decision as unfair and insensitive, the farmers stressed that cocoa remains a major contributor to the nation’s economy.

Speaking on behalf of the group, a farmer leader warned that the reduction could discourage production and negatively impact the local economy. He urged the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board to immediately review the price to reflect current economic realities.

The demonstrators also cautioned that their protests would escalate if their concerns were not addressed promptly. Security personnel were deployed to ensure the march remained peaceful.

Western North cocoa farmers threaten demo over price reduction https://www.adomonline.com/western-north-cocoa-farmers-threaten-demo-over-price-reduction/ Fri, 13 Feb 2026 15:54:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630919 Farmers in the Western North Region have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the recent reduction in the producer price of cocoa.

The price cut from GH¢3,600 to GH¢2,587 per bag has prompted farmers to threaten a demonstration on February 19, 2026, if the government does not respond.

Speaking to Adom News, cocoa farmers said the downward adjustment worsens their already difficult living conditions. Rising costs of farm inputs, labour, transportation, and household necessities, they argue, are not reflected in the new price.

“The new price is unfair and does not consider the realities we face on the ground. We work tirelessly to produce cocoa, yet our efforts are being undermined,” one farmer said. “This decision shows a lack of concern for the welfare of those who contribute so much to the national economy.”

In solidarity, the Forum for Accountability and Development of Sefwi has backed the farmers, warning that a peaceful but firm protest will proceed on February 19 unless authorities reverse the decision or engage in meaningful dialogue.

Addo Harry, Executive Director of the forum, addressed the media in Sefwi Wiawso, emphasising that the demonstration aims to draw national attention to the plight of cocoa farmers and push for a fairer pricing policy.

The farmers and their supporters insist the protest will remain peaceful but are determined to ensure their grievances are heard.

Group petitions police over planned demonstration on delayed cocoa payments https://www.adomonline.com/group-petitions-police-over-planned-demonstration-on-delayed-cocoa-payments/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 16:05:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629293 A concerned civil society group, the Forum for Accountability and Development of Sefwi (FADOS), has petitioned the Ghana Police Service in the Western North Region over a planned demonstration to protest delays in payments to cocoa farmers.

In the petition, FADOS stated that the demonstration is intended to draw national attention to the hardships cocoa farmers have endured due to payment delays that have persisted for over three months.

According to the group, the situation has severely affected farmers’ livelihoods, leaving many unable to meet basic household needs, service financial obligations, or adequately prepare for the next farming season.

FADOS noted that cocoa farming remains the economic backbone of many communities in the Western North Region, stressing that payment delays have far-reaching consequences, including disruptions to children’s education and local economic activities.

Addressing the Regional Police Command, the group assured the Police Service of its commitment to a peaceful and lawful demonstration in accordance with the Public Order Act. It also requested police protection before, during, and after the protest to ensure public safety and maintain order.

The group further called on the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and release the outstanding payments to alleviate the suffering of cocoa farmers across the region.

Kpandai NDC Executives distance themselves from supporters’ protest following Supreme Court ruling https://www.adomonline.com/kpandai-ndc-executives-distance-themselves-from-supporters-protest-following-supreme-court-ruling/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 13:59:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626639 The Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kpandai, Nyong Robert Saparku, has distanced the party’s local leadership from a recent demonstration staged by some supporters following the Supreme Court’s decision to quash the rerun elections.

In an interview with Adom News and in an official statement, Mr. Saparku clarified that the protest, which saw a number of NDC members and sympathizers take to the streets, was neither sanctioned nor organised by the constituency executives.

“The leadership of the National Democratic Congress in Kpandai wishes to state, for the record, that the party has a recognized leadership structure at the constituency level, and this must be respected at all times,” he said. “The party is not aware of, nor has it sanctioned, any demonstration within the constituency. Any action taken outside the knowledge and approval of the Constituency Executive Committee does not represent the position of the party.”

He stressed that the increasing disregard for constituency executives and established party structures must stop immediately. “We understand the concerns of our members, but as constituency executives, we did not organise or endorse the protest. The action was taken by some aggrieved individuals on their own,” he added.

Mr. Saparku urged party supporters to remain calm and channel their grievances through peaceful and appropriate means. He also called on security agencies and the public not to attribute the demonstrators’ actions to the official leadership of the NDC in Kpandai.

The Supreme Court recently nullified the planned rerun elections in the constituency, a decision that has sparked debate and mixed reactions among political actors and supporters.

The constituency secretary reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to democratic principles and internal unity, noting that the party leadership is focused on strengthening coordination and discipline at the local level.

Leaders of the association are in discussions with the Regional Police Command to secure approval and finalise arrangements for the protest.

Speaking to Adom News, Women’s President of GUNMA, Sandra Frimpong, said the group is ready to take its concerns directly to key government institutions.

“We are prepared to send our grievances to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, and even the Jubilee House if necessary,” she stated.

The planned protest highlights growing frustration among thousands of qualified nurses and midwives who feel abandoned despite the critical role they play in Ghana’s healthcare system.

Several members expressed deep disappointment, noting that the lack of employment opportunities has left them stranded for years since graduation.

Residents of Abuontem stage ‘Yɛgye yɛ park’ demo against their chief https://www.adomonline.com/residents-of-abuontem-stage-y%c9%9bgye-y%c9%9b-park-demo-against-their-chief/ Mon, 20 Oct 2025 19:31:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2590484 Residents of Abuontem in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti region have staged a demonstration against their Chief over the takeover of a community park.

According to the protestors, the chief, Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu Ampam, prior to his ascension to the throne, reached an agreement with the residents to use the community football pitch to build his palace.

In exchange, the chief also promised to redevelop another pitch for the community.

But after two years, the chief has yet to fulfil his part of the agreement, leading to the ‘Yɛgye yɛ park’ demonstration.

Leader of the protestors, Frank Assuah says the community needs to host inter-schools football competition, but they are losing the opportunity due to the non-availability of a pitch.

“Now the Chief has turned the pitch into an events centre which we don’t have a problem with, but he should redevelop what he promised for us so that the community will get some places to hold athletics,” he stated.

The residents have given the chief a one-month ultimatum to construct a pitch for the community.

Adom news followed up the matter to the Abuontem traditional council.

The Abusuapanin, Kofi Tutu Ampam, admitted that the community reached an agreement to offer the community pitch for their chief to build the palace but the traditional council has delayed in fulfilling their part.

He says the chief has prepared a portion of land for the pitch redevelopment but the project stalled due to some challenges.

“The youth agitating are right but I will plead on behalf of my chief Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu Ampam to urge them to exercise patience. Their pitch will be redeveloped soon to have peace in the community.

“We need peace in Abuontem and we will ensure that happens to Foster development,” said the Abusuapanin.

The Tema NDC Youth Groups have refuted allegations that they are planning a demonstration against the appointment of Mr. Kwasi Darko Asare as Managing Director of the Tema Development Corporation.

In a press release dated February 5, 2025, the youth groups described the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

They asserted that the misinformation is being spread by elements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and does not represent the position of the NDC.

The statement emphasized their support for the appointment, stating that they are committed to working with Mr. Asare to promote progress in Tema.

They urged the public to disregard the false claims and focus on unity and development.

The group reaffirmed its stance on fostering initiatives that benefit the community rather than engaging in protests.

The protest is being organized to demand the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters who were arrested and detained by police a week ago.

It also aims to spotlight the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, which continues to pose serious environmental and social challenges in Ghana.

Operating under the banners of “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” the demonstration has garnered significant support, particularly on social media, where thousands are expected to join.

Earlier this week, police approved the protest route, which will pass through key areas including Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Airport Traffic Light, National Service Secretariat, Ridge Hospital, AU Roundabout and Parliament before concluding at Independence Square.

The demonstration is anticipated to shine a spotlight on the detained activists and reinforce calls to end illegal mining activities nationwide.

Shipping lines to be rocked with a demonstration on Tuesday https://www.adomonline.com/shipping-lines-to-be-rocked-with-a-demonstration-on-tuesday/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 07:39:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2452298 Key players in the logistics and trade sectors will on Tuesday, September 24, embark on a protest against shipping lines operating in Ghana on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), the Association of Customs House Agents of Ghana, the Freight Forwarders Association of Ghana, and the Customs Brokers Association of Ghana, along with other several trade associations will lead peaceful demonstrations to highlight exploitative practices by shipping lines operating within the country.

Key Issues

The various associations claim that the protest is to make known their concerns on a range of issues they believe are negatively impacting the cost of doing business in Ghana.

Chief among the complaints is the imposition of arbitrary charges such as local administrative fees, container cleaning fees, and empty container fees.

According to the organisers, these charges which are pegged to the dollar, violate the Bank of Ghana’s regulations on pricing of locally derived services.

Furthermore, the protestors are calling for the immediate cessation of demurrage charges on weekends and public holidays, which they argue unfairly penalizes businesses during non-working days when clearance processes are halted.

They are demanding a refund of all demurrage fees that have been levied during these periods, insisting that the charges are unjustifiable and harmful to businesses.

Forex Leakages and Economic Impact

The protest organisers also raise concerns over the repatriation of forex earnings by shipping lines, which they claim is contributing to the country’s foreign exchange difficulties.

According to a statement issued by the protesting groups, the excessive and unjust fees collected by shipping lines and then repatriated abroad are depleting Ghana’s forex reserves.

This, they argue, weakens the local currency and further burdens the national economy, making it harder for Ghanaian businesses to compete both locally and internationally.

“These practices have stifled the potential growth of Ghana’s shipping sector, severely impacting businesses and crippling the financial well-being of numerous stakeholders within the supply chain,” the group said in a statement.

Wider Implications on Cost of Living

Beyond the direct impact on businesses, the organisers believe these exploitative practices are affecting the average Ghanaian.

The increased cost of doing business, caused by the arbitrary charges imposed by shipping lines, trickles down to consumers, driving up the cost of imported goods. This situation, they say, contributes to the already high cost of living in Ghana.

The protest organisers are making the following specific demands.

1. Abolishing demurrage charges on weekends and public holidays, and refunding businesses for demurrage fees paid during those periods.

2. Compelling shipping lines to negotiate tariffs in accordance with Regulation 5 of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2190).

3. Eliminating arbitrary fees, including local administrative charges, container cleaning fees, and empty container fees.

4. Ensuring that shipping lines provide 24-hour services throughout the week, including weekends and public holidays, to avoid unnecessary delays.

5. Stopping shipping lines from engaging in customs house brokerage, which they claim disadvantages freight forwarders and stifles competition.

6. Prohibiting the pegging of shipping line fees to the US dollar, in line with Bank of Ghana regulations.

A Call for National Support

The protest organisers urged the general public and government authorities to lend their support to the cause.

They said that holding shipping lines accountable will not only improve the efficiency of Ghana’s logistics and supply chain but also help stabilise the cedi and lower the cost of goods for consumers.

“This is not just an industry issue — it’s a national issue,” the organisers stated, adding that “The outcome of this protest has the potential to reshape the operational landscape of commerce in Ghana, potentially stabilise the exchange rate, significantly increase the standard of living of every Ghanaian, and mitigate the national security ramifications of the cost of living crisis,” the statement noted.

Police agree with NDC on routes for September 17 demo against EC https://www.adomonline.com/police-agree-with-ndc-on-routes-for-september-17-demo-against-ec/ Thu, 12 Sep 2024 15:17:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448025 The Accra Regional Police Command has reached an understanding with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding their upcoming protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

In a letter signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Regional Commander, Emmanuel Aryee Akonnor, the Police confirmed the demonstration would commence at 7:00 a.m. The letter was addressed to the NDC, affirming the agreed arrangements.

NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had previously announced a nationwide protest on the same date, citing the EC’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December elections as a primary reason.

He highlighted the party’s suspicions stemming from a perceived lack of transparency from the EC.

Additionally, concerns raised by the NDC Minority in Parliament regarding possible tampering with the voter register exhibition further fueled the party’s call for the protest.

Following discussions between the NDC and the police, the agreed demonstration route will follow this path: Kwame Nkrumah Circle – Farisco Traffic Light – TUC – National Theatre – Stadium – Parliament, where a petition will be presented to the Speaker.

The protest will conclude at the EC’s office, where a second petition will be delivered.

The police reassured the public of their commitment to ensuring security during the demonstration within their mandate.

Komenda Sugar Factory: Residents move protest to Accra https://www.adomonline.com/komenda-sugar-factory-residents-move-protest-to-accra/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 11:02:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2432610 The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have announced a change in location for their upcoming demonstration against the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm.

Originally set to take place in Komenda on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the protest will now be held in Accra on a yet-to-be-announced date.

The protesters are demanding the reversal of the lease agreement, advocating for the factory to resume its original purpose of processing locally-grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar.

They contend that, the lease agreement was executed without proper adherence to procedures and without adequate consultation with stakeholders.

In a statement on August 11, the group explained that the decision to relocate to Accra is intended to “amplify our voices, escalate our demands, and ensure that our concerns are heard at the highest levels of government.”

The group is currently in discussions with relevant stakeholders and authorities to finalize a new date for the demonstration.

“We are confident that this move will galvanize support, foster greater solidarity, and ultimately contribute to a more effective and impactful advocacy campaign,” they added.

Read below the statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALL TO ACTION
As Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area, we welcome investment agreements, including those with foreign investors that benefit local stakeholders and protect the interests of local sugarcane outgrower farmers, with government assurance that farmers’ concerns will be addressed and their benefits ensured.

We are compelled to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the government’s handling of investment agreements, particularly the lack of transparency and consultation with local stakeholders.

Commitments have been made to introduce new sugarcane varieties, develop new farmland, and support outgrowers, which we have sought clarification on directly with investor representatives. However, we remain vigilant and demand direct government assurance and transparency to guarantee these commitments and ensure local sugarcane farmers benefit equitably.

DEMONSTRATION UPDATE

Following careful consideration and consultation with stakeholders, we have resolved to relocate our demonstration from Komenda to Accra. This strategic decision aims to amplify our voices, escalate our demands, and ensure that our concerns receive the attention they deserve at the highest level of government.

A new date for the demonstration will be announced shortly, pending further engagement with relevant stakeholders and authorities. We are confident that this move will galvanize support, foster greater solidarity, and ultimately contribute to a more effective and impactful advocacy campaign.

The students, concerned about potential long-term unemployment, report that engagements with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources revealed delays due to a lack of financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.

The Coalition’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Awuku, highlighted the challenges students are facing and called for the deployment of batches yet to be posted.

They are also threatening to stage a demonstration if their demands are not met.

“Tempers are rising among School of Hygiene trainees across the country, and the urge to resort to a massive demonstration at the presidency and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is reaching its peak daily.

“School of Hygiene trainees are also health trainees and remain constitutionally eligible to receive our trainee allowances. However, it seems stakeholders are using technicalities to exclude our people from the trainee allowance scheme. We haven’t received an allowance for two years now, and some have even completed their training without receiving a single cedi as trainee allowances,” he said.

Damongo chiefs threatens demo against MP https://www.adomonline.com/damongo-chiefs-threatens-demo-against-mp/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 08:11:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2423060 The Chief of Damongo in the Savannah Region, Damongo Wura Kelly Boresa, along with his sub-chiefs, has called on the NPP leadership and Chieftaincy Minister to call the Damongo MP, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to order.

“The chiefs and people of the Damongo Traditional area will not tolerate any attempt by the MP to disrespect, undermine, and disregard the authority of Damongo Wura or compromise the security of Damongo and its environs,” the chief stated.

The chiefs and elders expressed their displeasure during a press conference in Damongo.

The Damongo skin says he has experienced relative tension, suspicion, and property destruction over the past seven and a half years.

Following the death of Damongo Wura Lermu Jakpa in 2016, two kinsmen, Damongo Wura Kelly Seidu and Damongo Wura Yakubu Imoro Gbedease, both claimed legitimacy over the same skin.

Damongo Wura Kelly Seidu petitioned the Northern Regional House of Chiefs for redress, and the case was referred to the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs after the creation of the Region.

A three-member Judicial Committee, constituted by the late Yagbonwura Sulemana Tuntumba Boresa I, has yet to deliver a verdict after several postponements.

The spokesperson for the chiefs, Saa Wura Abukari Jaga, stated that since his affirmation, Damongo Wura Kelly Seidu Boresa has reached out to all stakeholders, including the MP for Damongo, for the development of the traditional area.

However, the MP for Damongo has not recognised the legitimacy of Damongo Wura and has refused to work with him.

“All stakeholders except the MP for Damongo have duly recognised the legitimacy of the Damongo Wura and have indicated their willingness to work with him,” Jaga said.

Jaga further accused Abu Jinapor of covertly meddling in an already settled matter and failing to recognize the decision of the Yagbonwura and his Council of Elders in affirming Damongo Wura Seidu Kelly.

The chiefs expressed their disappointment with the MP’s interference in matters that should be handled within the traditional setup, stating that his actions have caused widespread discontent among the people.

The chiefs issued an ultimatum: “Should the MP continue to ignore this humble call by the Damongo Wura and his sub-chiefs, we assure him that our community will, within a month, have no choice but to organise a massive demonstration to express our discontent and seek appropriate remedies from higher authorities.”

In response, the MP for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, through the NPP Damongo constituency Secretary, Kadiri Abdul Rahaman, stated that he would respond to the chiefs in due time.

Afram Plains, known as a leading food basket of the nation, suffers from a lack of essential infrastructure which has prompted the demonstration

They are demanding government intervention to address the poor condition of the ferry and the bad road network from Kwawu Tafo to Donkorkrom.

Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Fix the two engines of the ferry,” “Fix Afram bridge,” and “No more reverse on the ferry,” highlighting their grievances.

Traders to stage demo against govt in two weeks if … https://www.adomonline.com/traders-to-stage-demo-against-govt-in-two-weeks-if/ Mon, 27 May 2024 05:22:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2400249

A coalition of traders’ groups from across the nation has come together to urgently appeal to the government for immediate action to reduce the exchange rate from GHC 15.50 to GHC 10.00.

They argue that this reduction is crucial for the survival and growth of small and medium-sized businesses, which are currently struggling with high operational costs due to the fluctuating currency values.

The high exchange rate has made imports more expensive, pushing many businesses to the brink of closure and causing job losses.

The traders believe that a lower exchange rate would help businesses thrive, attract investment, and boost the overall economy.

Historically, the cedi’s value has been declining. In 2008, it was GHC 1.057 to the dollar, rising to GHC 1.972 in 2012, and GHC 3.945 in 2016.

Under the current government, it has soared to GHC 15.17, causing distress among business owners and consumers.

Traders are crucial for economic growth, job creation, and innovation.

However, in a press release, they noted that the current exchange rate threatens their future.

The coalition of traders is calling on the government to prioritize the needs of businesses and take decisive steps to lower the exchange rate.

They argue that such measures would provide a lifeline to struggling enterprises.

The traders’ groups have also warned of a strong nationwide demonstration if the government fails to address the situation within two weeks.

The protesters were among others seeking significant reforms in the governance of Ghana football. They believe Ghana’s football industry is collapsing because of poor leadership and structures.

The Black Stars exiting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the group stage is the final piece that necessitated the demonstration.

Among the demands in the petition, the conveners asked for the disbandment of national team management committees, that many see as not doing any work and taking outrageous per diems.

Read the full fifteen points in the petition below:

  • DEVELOP A NATIONAL FOOTBALL POLICY:

This policy if properly developed, with proper consultation and inputs will serve as a direct guiding principle or the fulcrum around which our football will revolve.

  • INSTITUTE A COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY:

A Commission of enquiries and investigations, akin to the Dzamefe Commission, must be established to probe the factors contributing to the poor performances of the National Teams, including administrative, coaching, and player-related issues. Specific terms of reference must be provided, and a Government white paper issued accordingly.

  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

There is a pressing need for accountability for individuals and entities responsible for the disbursement and utilization of the $10.5m prize money received from our World Cup participation in Qatar 2022, the $8.5 million budget in Ivory Coast. This we believe will guide us in future tournaments and our participation.

  • DISSOLUTION OF SEARCH COMMITTEE’S REPORT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW BLACK STAR COACH:

After three successive failed major tournament campaigns in three years, it is evident that Ghana’s football problems go beyond the appointment of coaches. The search committee tasked to look for a new coach for the Black Stars report must be discarded immediately, pending the review of the technical report, investigation into the issues that calumniated the horror show, management of the team, personnel, medical reports and challenges that bedeviled the team.

  • DISBANDMENT OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES:

The National Teams Management Committees have become an avenue for rewarding members of the GFA and their assigns with promises of travel and allowance. Thus, there are no criteria for selection members for these management committees. Besides, the competencies of some of the members are highly questionable. We recommend that, due to the palpable ineffectiveness of the management committees, the practice must be scrubbed. In its place, we propose the establishment of a ‘National Teams Board’ that will be responsible for the management of all national teams. This board must be a three-member board with a National Teams Coordinator as member. This would reduce the number of committees and build a robust system of governance for all the national teams. The National Teams Board would directly work hand in hand with the various back-room staff to uphold the highest standards required of the Ghanaian football.

  • LACK OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT:

The development of Juvenile Football is the bedrock of success for all football nations. Over the years, Ghana has chalked remarkable success at juvenile and youth competitions at the continental and global level. The transition of these successes to significant achievements at the senior level however remains nonexistent.  Talents unearthed at juvenile level unfortunately falloff without a deliberate succession plan to integrate them into the various age groups.

Since 2017, no National Male Team at the youth level or developmental stage of football has qualified for the World Cup. This has greatly hindered Ghana’s football developmental process. There is evidence of conflict-of-interest situations in the call of youth players with members of the current GFA administrations favoring players playing for clubs owned by these administrators and or clubs associated with the leadership. The resultant effect in the long run is the various teams no show at the global stage and depleted Black Stars.

  • STRUCTURAL REFORMS:

Structural reforms must be introduced at the GFA to ensure transparency, accountability, and good corporate governance, thereby improving financial management and enhancing professionalism in football administration. We recommend that, effective immediately, the Government order the agency responsible for sports in Ghana, the Ministry or National Sports Authority (NSA) to sign the FIFA Standard Corporation Agreement to ensure that government can get involved in the organization, technical direction, administration and the financing of football without the usual FIFA interference rhetoric.

  • NATIONAL TEAM FUNDING:

It is public knowledge, the level of financial investment the Government of Ghana makes into the National Teams. We are however of the view that, the mode of investment is wrong.

Substantial sums of tax payers’ monies only go into the Black Stars’ friendly games, tournaments at the expense of other National teams and sectors of the sport. It is quite astonishing the manner in which several Sports Ministers continue to approve unconscionable budgets prepared by the GFA for the Black Stars campaigns without proper scrutiny.

We suggest that, the GFA Collaborates with the National Sports Authority in the preparation of tournament or game budgets, as the NSA is the body mandated by Law, to undertake such exercise.

  • INVEST IN GRASS-ROOT DEVELOPMENT:

Government must invest massively in school sports, technical development, and infrastructure and grass-root football.

  • DOMESTIC COMPETITION:

The success of every Football Federation is measured by the strength of its domestic competitions. The Ghana Premier League and other competitions are in a very deplorable state. When organized well, it has the propensity of boosting the local economy with activities each week while offering employment opportunities to thousands of Ghanaians. As a matter of urgency, the government must endeavor to invest in the local league, through infrastructure development and also engage state and parasternal agencies to sponsor the leagues. An agreement should be reached between organizers of the league, club owners and such state agencies to have an oversight role in the use of these monies to ensure transparency at all levels. Adequate provision of infrastructure is crucial for football development in Ghana. The government should invest in the construction and maintenance of modern football infrastructure to support national teams and domestic leagues.

  • ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL TRAINING COMPLEX
  • ACCOUNTABILITY:

The GFA manages the national team in trust of Ghanaians. For accountability and transparency purposes we are calling for an extensive investigation into all the monies (FIFA & CAF and sponsorships) that have come to the GFA in the last five years. We are aware that MTN sponsored the Black Stars $2 million for two years when we qualified for the 2022 World Cup. Mara, Tecno Mobile, Puma, Flora Tissue, Zeepay, Chery Cars is part of Tanink Ghana Limited etc are some sponsors that came on board to sponsor the Black Stars during the World Cup in Qatar.

  • NATIONAL TEAM COACHES SALARY CHALLENGE:

All national team coaches must be provided with contract and be paid just as the Black Stars’ coach to cure the issues of bribery heavily associated with the management of the other national teams.

  • STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT:

Government to lead stakeholder engagements involving football clubs, fans, players, journalists, and civil society institutions to chart the way forward

  • REDUCTION OF TAX ON FOOTBALL-RELATED EVENTS:

Parliament to as a matter of urgency, consider reducing the 17 percent tax on football events to 3 percent as done for the creative arts.

Black Stars’ underwhelming display fuels nationwide demonstration among fans.

Following three games without a win, including throwing away a two-goal lead in the last six minutes of their must-win last game against Mozambique, Ghana was eliminated from the tournament in the group stages.

  • January 29, 2024: A leak of the AFCON 2023 budget by an NDC Member of Parliament revealed a staggering $8.5 million allocation for the tournament, triggering allegations of mismanagement and corruption within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry.

Organized Labour in Ashanti ready for February 13 demo https://www.adomonline.com/organized-labour-in-ashanti-ready-for-february-13-demo-after-meeting-with-police/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 16:14:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2352867 Organized Labour in the Ashanti Region has concluded a meeting with the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi, in preparation for its planned demonstration on February 13.

The demonstration comes in the wake of the government’s failure to withdraw the imposition of the 15 percent Value-Added Tax (VAT) on domestic electricity, as demanded by the unions.

During the meeting, the labour unions discussed their proposed routes and the scheduled date for the protest, after concerns raised by the police in a previous meeting.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Augustine Adongo emphasised that they are not taking directives from the government and will not rescind their decision to demonstrate on the scheduled date.

According to him, the unions are taking directives from their leaders, emphasising that if the government waits until the night of Monday, February 12, to declare the withdrawal of the VAT implementation, it will be too late for the leadership of organised labour to meet and direct them to withdraw the demonstration.

“We, in the regions, are prepared to ensure that we will pass through where the market women are – they are feeling it even more than us. We will pass there and then tell them that if the government is insensitive to their plight, we, in organized labour, care for them and will fight this fight till our last blood.

“So what you are saying is true. If the government should come out on time for organised labour at the national level to meet and come out to tell us that we should stop, we in the region have no power to stop. Other than that, we are ever ready to make sure that next week we hit the streets,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) says they are not backing down on their decision to demonstrate against the implementation of the 15 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity.

Joshua Ansah emphasised that the Union will not reconsider or change its decision until government completely withdraws the VAT letter.

He admonished all workers to join in the nationwide demonstration to express their displeasure with the government.

Countryman Songo to lead demo against GFA https://www.adomonline.com/countryman-songo-to-lead-demo-against-gfa/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 10:04:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2349176 Host of Fire-for-Fire on Adom TV, Patrick Osei-Agyemang is set to lead a massive demonstration against the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The protest set for Valentine’s day, February 14 is in protest of the abysmal performance of the Kurt Okraku-led administration.

This follows Black Stars’ exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.

With the hope of ending the country’s 42-year trophy drought, the team exited at the group phase with just two points.

Ghana recorded two draws against Egypt and Mozambique after suffering a defeat against Cape Verde in their opener.

The Black Stars’ early exit means the team has suffered back-to-back group phase exit in the history of the AFCON.

Due to this shambolic performance of the team, Osei Agyemang, who is an award-winning broadcaster blamed GFA for spending a lot of the tax payer’s monies with no results.

He is therefore leading the massive demonstration to demand accountability especially on the budget for the AFCON.

Meanwhile, Chris Hughton, who was the head coach of the team has been sacked following the Black Stars’ poor performance at the 34th edition of the AFCON.

A roadmap has however been unveiled by the GFA to appoint a new coach.

Wassa communities embark on a ‘No Road, No Vote’ demonstration https://www.adomonline.com/wassa-communities-embark-on-a-no-road-no-vote-demonstration/ Thu, 31 Aug 2023 11:59:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2289324 Chiefs, opinion leaders, and residents of Amenfi West and Amenfi Central districts joined forces to stage a mammoth demonstration to draw attention to the dire condition of roads in Wassa communities.

The protest brought together around 20 communities from the two districts, including Kwabeng, Asankra-Saah, Agona Amenfi, Guavase, Dominase Nkwanta, Dominase, Agyakaa Manso, Daboase, and more.

Amid a significant police presence, protesters carried placards with messages that conveyed their frustration and disappointment.

Some of the messages read: “Wasa Needs Good Roads,” “Nana Addo, Why?” “Mr. DCE, Where Is the Contractor?” “No Tarred Road, No Election,” “Poor Roads Are Killing Us,” “Car Maintenance Cost Is Killing Us,” and “Lorry Fares Keep Increasing Every Day.”

The poor state of roads in Amenfi Central district is a significant concern as they are characterized by mud, potholes, and overgrowth.

This situation has given rise to challenges such as armed robbery, collapsing businesses, high transportation costs, and difficult travel conditions during the rainy season.

Pregnant women often have to deliver on these roads, and some are carried on makeshift wooden structures. The conditions have even deterred professionals like teachers from accepting postings in the area.

The situation has led the chiefs and residents of Amenfi Central District to feel neglected and aggrieved.

During a media address, Francis Agyapong, an organizer of the demonstration and the secretary to the Wasa Dominase Divisional Stool Lands, stated that since the district’s creation, residents have not witnessed the development of any tarred roads unless they travel to Sehwi Bekwai or Asanko.

Francis Agyapong emphasized that the opinion leaders and residents in Wass, particularly Amenfi Central, have made a resolute decision not to permit any electoral process in the district if the government fails to address their deplorable road conditions.

Meanwhile, some protestors shared personal stories with Adom News, illustrating the challenges they face due to the road conditions.

Drivers and car owners frequently endure the cost of purchasing new spare parts, encounter difficulties transporting goods like foodstuffs and cocoa, and face security threats from armed robbers due to the state of the roads.

Protestors appealed to the government for assistance, asserting that they would not permit any electoral process to occur in their area in 2024 if their road concerns are not addressed.

Police file for injunction against Minority’s planned demo https://www.adomonline.com/police-file-for-injunction-against-minoritys-planned-demo/ Thu, 31 Aug 2023 08:14:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2289256 The Ghana Police Service has filed for an injunction against the Minority’s proposed routes for its protest against the Bank of Ghana Governor and his two deputies.

The Minority will on September 5 seek to march from Makola, through Rawlings Park and Opera Square to the frontage of the Bank of Ghana.

However, the police argue that the route is often overcrowded with human and vehicular traffic and thus going by that route could endanger public order, public safety and the running of essential services.

They had proposed an alternate route starting from the parliament house through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light to end at the Independence Square, which the minority rejected.

The injunction, which will be heard on September 4 is to prevent the minority from using their preferred route.

The minority in reaction to the injunction application described it as a “breach of trust” and expressed their utter disappointment at the conduct of the police.

They intend to defend their case and embark on the protest on their preferred routes.

“We hope that the court will basically be on our side in terms of how important it is for us to protest and to make sure that the issues that are pushing us to protest especially the loss of 60.8billion Ghana cedis and its consequences on our economy and the impoverishment of the people of Ghana must move the court to allow this protest which is being led by the representatives of Ghana.

“And we believe that this is important. But we’re very disappointed that the police would go to court in the first place,” the minority said.

The students were protesting the timing of their meals and a deduction of GHS 50 from their allowances, which led to a heated clash with law enforcement agencies.

The demonstration took an unfortunate turn when police officers were allegedly called to the scene by the Acting College Secretary, escalating the situation.

The students alleged that the college had disconnected electricity connections in the school, leading to the theft of their personal belongings when they had to leave the campus to charge their phones.

Their grievances expanded beyond the feeding allowance to encompass broader concerns about the living conditions and treatment on campus.

During the demonstration, the Students Representative Council resident, Freeman Zokah, took the lead in addressing the students’ concerns. However, he became a victim of police brutality as officers reportedly assaulted him, with one police officer even slapping him from behind.

The incident has drawn widespread attention and condemnation from various quarters, sparking discussions about the use of force by law enforcement agencies against peaceful student protests.

Massive demo to hit Sehwi Ahibenso over deplorable roads https://www.adomonline.com/massive-demo-to-hit-sehwi-ahibenso-over-deplorable-roads/ Mon, 14 Aug 2023 13:25:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2283096 The chiefs and residents of Sehwi Ahibenso, located in the Bodi District of the Western North Region, have issued a stern ultimatum to the government over deplorable roads.

They are demanding the swift return of contractors who were working on the Bodi to Ahibenso road project, which has been left unfinished for years.

The road, stretching from Sehwi Bodi to Ahibenso, has fallen into a state of disrepair over the past eight years, causing immense inconvenience to users. Potholes, mud, and standing water have rendered the road impassable, disrupting travel and posing hazards to drivers and pedestrians alike.

Nana Kwaku Ngisenah, the Twafohene of Sehwi Ahibenso, who expressed the frustrations of the community, highlighted that both past and present governments have failed to address the road’s dire condition.

Despite assurances from President Akufo-Addo during his campaign tour in 2020 that the road project had been awarded to three contractors, no progress has been made.

Nana Ngisenah warned that if the government does not take swift action within the stipulated two-week ultimatum, the entire community of Ahibenso is prepared to embark on a demonstration.

Additionally, the chiefs have decided to prohibit any political activity within their community until the road issue is adequately resolved.

Stephen Armah, the assemblyman for Ahibenso electoral area, confirmed that he has made diligent efforts to address the road’s condition by engaging with the District Chief Executive and the Regional Minister. Despite his attempts, no concrete steps have been taken to remedy the situation.

Community members have joined in expressing their grievances, highlighting the urgency of the matter.

Major demo by fisherfolk looms over premix fuel shortage https://www.adomonline.com/major-demo-by-fisherfolk-looms-over-premix-fuel-shortage/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 08:50:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2186709 Agitated fisherfolk across the coastal areas of the country have threatened to embark on a massive demonstration, following their inability to access premix fuel to power their outboard motors for some months.

The incensed fishermen said they will soon hit the streets to press home their demands until the shortage of premix fuel is resolved by the government.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Acting President of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Nana Jojo Solomon, said, “in actual fact, we were not planning a demonstration but, listening to the feedback, the signals and the vibes from the various regions, they are asking leadership to allow them to embark on the demonstration. The fishermen are getting agitated day in and day out. Fisherfolk in Volta, Western, Central regions are calling for the demonstration, the pressure is mounting”.

He explained that the fisherfolk have not been able to access premix fuel for the past four months, saying the Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) are not prepared to supply to the fishermen.

According to him, the fishermen have resorted to purchasing petrol and mixing it with oil from the regular pumps which are very expensive, thereby transferring the cost to the consumers.

He bemoaned the suffering the fishermen are going through, adding that majority of them have fallen out of business.

“It’s been four months without premix fuel. The premix is not there, we are buying from the regular pumps which are very expensive. The few canoe owners who are able to afford fall out with huge debts here and there, and it’s a source of worry. Now we are getting fish, but there’s no premix,” he said on the show.

He called for an audience with President Akufo-Addo to find lasting solutions to the shortage of premix fuel, stressing that the issue is now beyond the powers of the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Nana Solomon indicated that the series of meetings between the fishermen, the Ministry of Fisheries, the Ministry of Finance, and other policymakers have yielded no results, adding that the fisherfolk cannot endure the challenges they are faced with anymore.

“We have been holding back and forth meetings, so we realised that this has to be placed at the doorsteps of the President asap so that the needful thing will be done. Ever since this premix fuel issue reared its ugly head, we have been in several meetings with the sector minister. We realised that the issues at stake are way beyond her jurisdiction. Fishermen cannot endure the hardships anymore, it gets to a point we need to be very blunt with policymakers and authorities that they cannot hold fishermen to a ransom. If it (demonstration) happens, I don’t think it will augur well for them,” he said.

The Acting President of Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council asserted that they have not been provided with any concrete explanation as to why there’s a shortage of premix fuel, adding that the fishermen are getting agitated.

All set for anti-MoMo tax demo https://www.adomonline.com/all-set-for-anti-momo-tax-demo/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 13:53:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2048202 Economic Fighters League (EFL), a pressure group, is set to demonstrate over the electronic levy in the 2022 Budget read by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The planned protest against the 2022 Budget, in general, has been slated for Friday, November 26, 2021, after notifying the police five days earlier.

The leader of EFL, Ernesto Yeboah, said the outfit and other Unions do not agree to the e-levy (MoMo, other electronic taxes) that will be implemented in 2022.

He argued that members of the informal sector do not understand the policy after public education provided by the League.

“Market women, traders, hawkers who do not understand the e-levy policy, also they did not accept the policy when the EFL explained to them what the levy is said to do. They are vehemently not in support of the e-levy,’’ he stressed.

According to Mr Yeboah, the 2022 Budget will inflict more pain and suffering on Ghanaians. He said this in an interview on Adom TV.

“Looking at the 2022 Budget the government wants to add more pains and suffering to Ghanaians,’’ he said.

He further explained that their objective as a group is to make sure that Ghanaians do not go through affliction in the country.

“Our main objective is to make sure that government does not afflict Ghanaians with pain and affliction making lives unbearable for them in the country,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Fighter General of the League, Hardi Yakubu, said the police have “asked us to change our date and route and we are not going to accept that request.

“On 26th November, the demonstration is going to happen and we are calling on all Ghanaians to come out in their numbers at Accra Tema Station at 8:00 am. We are marching straight to Parliament House to tell them to their faces as people that we have employed to reject the budget because it does not represent our interest.”

Law School failures: Students Association calls on govt to dissolve Legal Council https://www.adomonline.com/law-school-failures-students-association-calls-on-govt-to-dissolve-legal-council/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 15:15:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2027364 The Ghana Law Students Association has called on the government to dissolve the General Legal Council (GLC) over their silence on the mass failure in entrance exams.

On Adom FM’s Burning Issues, programme, a member of the law students body, Hassan Asare accused the GLC of not giving audience to the 499 law students who consider themselves to have been unfairly treated.

He said although the students have petitioned the GLC to reconsider its new law, there has not been any response.

Rather, he said, the GLC has asked the 790 students who were considered qualified to start their process.

“One of the things that, for example, I am pushing for, is to say that dissolve the whole GLC. Why did the Rasta boy get admitted into Achimota school when it was ruled that, he should be admitted but the Legal Council have not done anything bought the 499 laws students,” he asked.

He cautioned that the students will stage a demonstration if the Legal Council does not consider its decision and allow them entry to the school.

“We have been able to write to the police about our intention to demonstrate; it’s in our plan that we are embarking on demonstration, latest by next week Wednesday,” he indicated.

Kinsley Mcdonalds who says he’s written the entrance exams for the fourth time this year said the latest situation has shattered his dreams.

“Around 2017, I didn’t have any job and my mum was at the morgue but I still pushed hard to write the exams due to my passion for the job but I was failed through an interview,” he said.

We are ready to embark on peaceful ‘demo’ to fix the country – Efia Odo [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-ready-to-embark-on-peaceful-demo-to-fix-the-country-efia-odo-video/ Tue, 04 May 2021 16:02:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1955073 Actress Efia Odo has been one of the celebrities leading the charge for the government to ‘fix the country’ in the latest hashtag on Twitter, which has been trending since Monday.

According to her, price hikes, intermittent power outage, ‘no bed’ syndrome and the increment in fuel among others are causing many Ghanaians to wallow in poverty.

In her latest post on Instagram, the celebrity has vowed to embark on a demonstration together with those who are willing to put the incumbent government on it’s toes.

She asked Ghanaians to sign a petition being championed on social media to let their voices be heard because politicians cannot let their kids school outside and have their wives give birth abroad while we suffer.

MORE:

Join the movement sign the petition and let your voices be heard. And this will not be a temporal thing. We would peacefully protest and let the leaders know we are tired.

Efia odo

She continued to say in the video: We are tired of being looked down upon or manipulated and being lied to.

The way the leaders treat the people of this country, they will never treat their children like that. They will never let their children go to these kinds of schools or let their wives give birth in these kinds of hospitals.

They will never put their family members in the situation we are in. So why should we be treated this way because we are less than? That is not fair. Every Ghanaian matters, everyone matters.

Asawinso residents threaten demo against ‘galamsey’ https://www.adomonline.com/asawinso-residents-threaten-demo-against-galamsey/ Tue, 17 Nov 2020 17:38:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1881739 Some residents at Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’ in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region have threatened to stage a mammoth demonstration against illegal mining activities in Asawinso Forest Reserve.

Speaking at a press meeting at Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’, leader of the concerned association who doubles as assemblyman for the electoral area, Frank Nelson Ackah, complained bitterly about the degradation of their lands.

He explained how for the past few years, not less than 10 excavators have been employed to dig gulfs in the forest.

He pointed fingers at none than Chinese nationals.

“We are giving a one-week ultimatum to the Forestry Commission, Minerals Commission and the government to get all the excavators out of the forest or we will demonstrate,” he said.

According to Mr Ackah, clarion calls have been made to the authorities who have placed an injunction on the land, but the perpetrators have still not backed down.

Some residents, who spoke to Adom News, said ‘commandos’ have been stationed at the forest, causing fear and panic.

Agyapa Royalties deal: NDC to embark on massive demo if… [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/agyapa-royalties-deal-ndc-to-embark-on-massive-demo-if-video/ Wed, 11 Nov 2020 14:00:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1879303 The Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has disclosed the party’s intention to take drastic action against the government.

He said the NDC and other like-minded associations shall embark on series of protests and legal actions to ensure every pesewa dishonestly paid in agreement to the ‘shady’ Agyapa Royalties deal is refunded.

Mr Gyamfi made it clear the government’s failure to heed to the call will see Ghana witness “the biggest demonstration ever seen in the history of this country.”

The ultimatum, he emphasised, rests on the first week of December, after which the umbrella party will show their opposition powers.

Reiterating the threat in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story Tuesday, Mr Gyamfi said the intent is to expose the New Patriotic Party that he says has made it a mantra to accuse the NDC of being corrupt and having stolen from the public purse whilst in office.

“You see talk is cheap. They are in government now. If they think anybody violated the laws of this country and were paid monies that they were not supposed to be paid, let them retrieve it.

MORE

“That cannot be a justification for this naked robbery,” he said.

According to the Communications Officer, monies were illegally paid to “Databank, which is owned by the President’s cousin and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta; African Legal Associates, which is owned by another cousin Gabby Otchere Darko; and their foreign compradors.”

This, he said, exhibits the nepotism that is being perpetrated by the Akufo-Addo government.

Senya Bereku youth scare traditional leaders https://www.adomonline.com/senya-bereku-youth-scare-traditional-leaders/ Tue, 13 Oct 2020 22:21:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1866645 Angry youth of Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region took to the streets to demonstrate against the encroachment of their land by some traditional authorities.

The group members, who were clad in red and black attire, wielded placards with inscriptions such as ‘Senya Youth will defend their land,’ and ‘leave Senya Lands alone’ among others.

They chanted war songs on the streets to drum home their demand.

Leader of the group, Nicholas Yawson, also wants the government to intervene in the age-long chieftaincy dispute, which according to them, is hindering development.

They lamented that indigenes of the town have been forced to settle in other communities as a result of the chieftaincy issues which have not brought peace to the area.

Some residents, who spoke to Adom News, said they believe the government’s intervention will streamline activities while others said they need peace.

Former Assemblyman for Senya Anokyeso called on the authorities to come to their aid since they don’t want to take the laws into their hands to create mayhem.

Clients of collapsed fund managers arrested for picketing at Finance Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/clients-of-collapsed-fund-managers-arrested-for-picketing-at-finance-ministry/ Tue, 01 Sep 2020 20:46:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1848457 The spokesperson of the Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of the 53 Collapsed Fund Management Companies, Charles Nyame and one other person have been arrested for unlawful picketing.

Members of the coalition besieged the premises of the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, to stage a protest in connection with their locked-up funds.

Mr Nyame, who was handcuffed and put into the bucket of a pickup truck along with the other suspect, yelled to the media: “I am being arrested because we are making noise about our monies, we are not cocaine dealers for the government to confiscate our funds for over two years.

“What is the government doing? Are we cocaine dealers? Are we money launderers? Are we slaves in our country? We are not afraid; they should kill us; we are ready to die.

“I am being molested by the police, they slapped me because I am protesting for my money,” he shouted.

The protest comes a day after the coalition described as “misleading” and “deceptive”, the reasons given by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for excluding them from the bailout package being accorded customers of the collapsed fund managers.

SEC had said because BlackShield (formerly Gold Coast Fund Management) was challenging the revocation of its licence in court, its customers cannot be beneficiaries of the bailout.

However, speaking to journalists at a press conference in Accra, Mr Nyame said: “We consider the reasons given by the SEC as misleading and deceptive.

“The government also issued a bailout to other customers of companies that are also in court to contest their revocation.

“It is, therefore, questionable how the government and SEC decided to apply the rules differently.

“The actions by the government and SEC are mischievous and dishonest, especially when the government is aware that the court is on legal vacation.

“We hereby call on the government to rethink and include all BlackShield customers in the bailout package since advancing the bailout package does not amount to any interference in the court process,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the management of BlackShield Company Limited has denied claims by SEC that the company has not submitted verified data on its clients to enable them benefit from the government’s bailout package for customers of the now-defunct firms.

Protest hits Okyenhene’s university over salary and SSNIT non-payment https://www.adomonline.com/protest-hits-okyenhenes-university-over-salary-and-ssnit-non-payment/ Wed, 12 Aug 2020 21:54:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1839903 Some staff and the Students Representative Council of the University College of Environment and Agricultural Studies at Bunso in the Eastern region have protested against management of the institution for non-payment of salaries and Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions of workers.

These, among others, according to them, are affecting students enrollment while members of staff resign to other institutions.

The group claims management owes them accumulated 12 months salary.

“Since July 2019 we haven’t received salaries or bonuses. They keep telling us stories. How do they expect us to survive? I have to bury my dad but I can’t do it because I don’t have money,“ a cleaner at the University explained.

The protesters, clad in red, slammed the administration for poor management of the institution.

They held placards with several inscriptions some of which read: “Yabre…Osagyefo intervene, No money to buy sanitisers, No pay for 12 months. We are dying“ among other messages.

One of the leaders of the group, Richard Agboyi, wants the Chancellor, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin and government to intervene.

“After we took office conditions of service have never been good, especially salaries. For the past 12 months, we’ve not received our salaries and we don’t know the head and tail of what is going on. Our SSNIT is not being paid. We can’t even access National Health because our SSNIT has not been paid. I don’t know what the Chancellor is planning for the school because life is really really tough.

“We are pleading to the government to absorb the institution and see how it can help the institution,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, the staff members have given the university authorities a week’s ultimatum to fix the problems. They threatened to hit the streets of Kyebi to petition its owner, the Okyenhene.

The protesters will then subsequently head to the Flagstaff House to present a copy of the petition to President Akufo-Addo.

IPRAN has among other things argued against EC’s timing for the compilation of a new register, asserting the EC’s decision is problematic and can plunge the country into chaos.

IPRAN also argues that, the proposed cost for the exercise is unreasonable and will be a complete waste of public funds.

Despite the opposition mounted against the compilation of a new register by IPRAN, the EC has remained adamant as it (EC) continues processes to compile a new voters’ register.

We the National Association of Talkatives and the Comment Readers Association of Ghana are going to embark on a massive demonstration and sack all the toll collectors until maintenance works and streetlights are fixed on the motorway. We are not asking government to go to China or to the IMF or the World Bank for loans. We are demanding that it is financed with the streetlight levy we pay when we buy electricity and the toll we have paid for decades and continue to pay when we use the road. Just one week! One week! If we don’t hear anything we will move thousands of people there. How can people pay toll so that they can be killed. Why are we paying for are own death? In Ghana you can’t even die for free? You have to pay to be killed on a motorway? What crime have Ghanaians committed? One big demo by “The Prople” is coming! Show by hands if you are in. THE TIME IS NOW!!! LETS DO THIS FOR GHANA!!!
