Originally scheduled for December 6, 2025, the ceremony will now take place on December 13, 2025.

The decision was made during a meeting at the Otumfuo Saamanhene Palace on November 10, 2025, where a new funeral committee chaired by Dadiesoabahene was constituted to oversee the arrangements.

During the meeting, Daddy Lumba’s sister, Ernestina Akosua Brempomaa, appealed for a postmortem examination, expressing suspicions of foul play in her brother’s death. She requested that the burial and funeral be postponed until the test results confirmed the exact cause of death.

However, the Chiefs resolved that the postmortem issue would be handled by the police and reaffirmed December 13 as the official date for the funeral. They also urged the family to remain united and ensure a dignified send-off for the late musician.

Regarding the invocation of the Great Oath, Akosua Brempomaa — who performed the act — has been pardoned by the Asantehene but cautioned against repeating such actions in the future.

Fredima replies Ofori Amponsah over Lumba introduction claim https://www.adomonline.com/fredima-replies-ofori-amponsah-over-lumba-introduction-claim/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 07:58:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596828 Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredima, has reacted to comments by highlife musician Ofori Amponsah, who recently denied that Fredima introduced him to the late Daddy Lumba.

In a Facebook post, Fredima dismissed Ofori’s claim, insisting that he personally accompanied the musician to Daddy Lumba’s residence decades ago to present the demo of “Odo Mmra Fie.”

“There’s a conversation circulating from an interview Ofori Amponsah granted on Hitz FM denying that I ever took him to the late Daddy Lumba’s house to present his demo song ‘Odo Mmra Fie.’ I’ve spoken about this several times in interviews, and Daddy Lumba himself confirmed meeting both of us,” he wrote.

Fredima noted that several people could corroborate his account, naming his wife, Jose Addo, Eb De Noble Choice, Selina Orleans Lindsay, Omama Agyei, and Nana Agyei Kodie as witnesses.

While acknowledging that Ofori has admitted he produced the demo, Fredima said it appeared the singer had forgotten the events of over 30 years ago.

“I’ve never said I was the first to introduce him to Lumba, but I was the one who accompanied him to present his demo,” he clarified.

He went on to recall an old prophecy from a relative in 1993 who had predicted that Ofori might one day deny parts of their shared history.

Fredima then challenged Ofori to dispute that they drove together to Lumba’s home at Dome that year.

“If he insists he didn’t, I’ll add it to the seven wonders of the world,” he quipped.

Ending his post, the veteran producer stressed that he bore no ill feelings, writing:

“At least my demo gave him a springboard in life. No malice. We move. Good beads don’t rattle.”

The post followed Ofori Amponsah’s interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, where the highlife singer denied ever visiting Daddy Lumba’s house with Fredima.

“It wasn’t Fredima who introduced me to Daddy Lumba. He produced my demo, but I took it around myself. I went to Lumba’s house personally, presented the demo, and he later called me back saying he’d listened and wanted to help me,” Ofori explained.

He further claimed that it was rather he who later introduced Fredima to Daddy Lumba, along with Selina Orleans, who went on to record a gospel song with the music legend.

In previous interviews, however, Fredima had consistently stated that he personally drove Ofori to meet Lumba, a claim he reiterated on Power FM three years ago.

He also revealed that Daddy Lumba once asked whether Ofori had ever expressed gratitude for his role in shaping his career.

Ofori Amponsah denies Fredima introduced him to Daddy Lumba https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-amponsah-denies-fredima-introduced-him-to-daddy-lumba/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 10:03:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596443 Highlife artiste Ofori Amponsah has refuted claims by music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredima, that he was the one who introduced him to the late Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio, Ofori Amponsah said he personally took his demo recordings to Daddy Lumba after Fredima had assisted him in recording them.

“It wasn’t Fredima who introduced me to Daddy Lumba. I went out searching for a producer by myself. I went around looking for people to help me. He did the demo for me and I had to take it around,” he explained.

He clarified that he did not visit Lumba’s house with Fredima when seeking a producer.

“I went to Daddy Lumba’s house myself, presented my demo, and the following day he said he had listened to it and wanted to see me. I went in and he said ‘I will help you.’ That’s all,” Ofori added.

According to Ofori, it was he who later introduced Fredima to Daddy Lumba. He also brought Selina Orleans, who worked with Fredima, to Lumba after the latter expressed interest in recording a gospel song.

Fredima had previously claimed he personally drove Ofori to meet Daddy Lumba, repeating the assertion on Power FM three years ago. He also mentioned that Daddy Lumba once asked whether Ofori had shown appreciation for his role in his rise to fame.

Ofori Amponsah, however, acknowledged that Fredima discovered his musical talent, while insisting that his connection with Daddy Lumba was independent.

Ofori and Daddy Lumba went on to collaborate on several hit songs, including Wo Ho Kyere, Adu Da, Dangerous, and Odo Nti.

Meanwhile, Ofori Amponsah has released a new song titled ‘Waiting,’ featuring King Paluta.

Manhyia postpones ‘Great Oath’ hearing involving Daddy Lumba’s sister https://www.adomonline.com/manhyia-postpones-great-oath-hearing-involving-daddy-lumbas-sister/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 13:33:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2595628 The Manhyia Palace has postponed the hearing of a case involving a relative of musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, after the Great Oath of the Asantehene was invoked.

The delay follows Daddy Lumba’s sister, Ernestina Akosua Bimpomaa, invoking the Great Oath during a court session on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The case, filed by Daddy Lumba’s first wife, Akosua Serwaa, seeks to determine the lawfully wedded spouse of the late musician.

Under Asante tradition, cases involving the Great Oath must be resolved at the Manhyia Palace, as courts have no jurisdiction over such matters. The family was summoned to the palace for resolution on Monday, November 3, 2025, but the hearing was postponed due to a pending court case awaiting verdict.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi High Court dismissed an injunction application by Akosua Serwaa seeking to halt Daddy Lumba’s funeral rites. The court affirmed that authority over the late musician’s remains rests with his extended family in accordance with Asante custom.

The legal proceedings will now focus on determining the main surviving spouse. All parties have been ordered to file necessary legal documents by Friday, October 31, ahead of a Case Management Conference scheduled for November 14. The main hearing is set to begin on November 17, with a final judgment expected on November 25.

Daddy Lumba’s body belongs to the family, not the partner – High Court rules https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumbas-body-belongs-to-the-family-not-the-partner-high-court-rules/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 06:36:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2593465 A Kumasi High Court has ruled that the body of a deceased person belongs to the family and not the partner

The court observed that, irrespective of the form of the marriage contracted in Ghana, customary law is applied in the unlikely event of the death of the partner

Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, in her ruling on an interlocutory injunction application seeking to enjoin the burial and funeral service of legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, aka Daddy Lumba, says the matrilineal family is entitled to a deceased person’s body and funeral rites.

It follows the court’s refusal of an injunction application brought against the head of the family, Priscilla Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, and the Transitions Funeral Home by Akosua Serwaa, who identifies herself as the only surviving wife of the late musician.

Dorinda Smith-Arthur’s court was characterised by heated legal arguments and banter as counsel for the plaintiff and defendants battled it out to advance their positions on the law.

Lawyers for the plaintiff, led by William Kusi, had spent 56 minutes to advance his arguments, praying the court to absorb his client’s plea to prevent the head of the family and another woman who also identifies as the wife of the musician, the funeral home, as well as their assigns, from moving the body and conducting the burial and funeral rites of the late musician

Plaintiff counsel averred, Akosua Serwaa is the only surviving spouse since she has a certificate of Civil Ordinance Marriage issued in Germany, and she ran to court knowing very well that the law was on her side as the only surviving wife.

This, he said, is an indication that the late musician cannot be married to another woman.

Referring to several legal authorities, including the Practice Direction of 2024, lawyer William Kusi argued the application was not strange and that it was known by law since due procedure was followed.

Quoting paragraph 3 of the practice, he said the plaintiff filed the application promptly, that is, on October 3, 2025.

Akosua Serwaa www.myjoyonline.com

But the hopes of the plaintiff’s relatives being granted by the court were shot down when defence lawyers questioned the legitimacy of the evidence put before the court in the form of a purported marriage certificate of the marriage of the late musician.

They also pointed out procedural errors in the interpretation of the certificate, claiming it did not comply with Section 8 of the Evidence Act.

They pleaded Exhibit A1 could not be admissible since it was in Dutch and should have been certified by the German authorities, Ghana’s consul in Hamburg, and further interpreted by approved institutions in Ghana.

On the part of the counsel of Transition Funeral Home, the evidential burden of duty was not met by the applicant as prescribed by Section 11 of the Evidence Act

But the human rights court, which also has to make a determination of the substantive application filed by Akosua Serwaa, who is seeking to be recognised as the only surviving spouse of the late Ghanaian music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, refused the injunction application.

Presiding Judge, Her Ladyship Dorinda Smith Arthur, who cited Order 25, Arthur, rule 1:1 of the High Court (Civil Procedures) Rules, 2004, and several legal authorities, assured parties her ruling shall be just and convenient as she refused the application.

Dominic Kwadwo Osei www.myjoyonline.com

Lawyer for the defendants, Dominic Kwadwo Osei, the counsel for the 1st respondent, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, said, “It has been by dint of hard work from the team. As the judge read (ruling), I was very confident in our position.

“We had an objective. Our objectives first, to ensure that any impediment, such as this injunction, would be denied by the court for the proper burial to proceed.

“What the judge read sounded like someone who appreciated both arguments; saw the superior argument from our side-from Baba Jamal and Associates, and sided with our position, so we are very, very happy, ‘ he said.

“It also means victory for the family. What it means is that now bury this giant of a musician and then look at other matters.”

Meanwhile, the court has set out plans to rule on the substance case by November 25, 2025.

The court has set November 14, 2025, for case management.

The application, filed by Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, who identifies herself as the musician’s legal wife, sought to block the head of the extended family and another woman also identifying as his spouse from proceeding with funeral rites.

It arose amid a complex dispute over widowhood rights, funeral control, and the validity of marriages.

The late musician passed away on 26 July 2025. His family had announced that the final funeral rites would take place on December 6, 2025, at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The legal challenge now raises the possibility of delay or adjustment of the planned date.

Contestants in the case include the head of the musician’s family, Kofi Owusu Fosu, and Ms. Priscilla Ofori, also known as “Odo Broni,” who claims to have been married to the star and bore children with him.

Madam Serwaa maintained her status as the only legally married wife, arguing that her rights are being sidelined.

German Embassy sets record straight on validity of Lumba, Akosua Serwaa’s marriage https://www.adomonline.com/german-embassy-sets-record-straight-on-validity-of-lumba-akosua-serwaas-marriage/ Tue, 28 Oct 2025 10:23:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592898 The family of the late Ghanaian music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has announced that the German Embassy in Accra has confirmed the validity of his marriage to Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosu.

In a statement, the family said the Embassy had, in a letter dated October 27, 2025, verified that under German civil law, there exists a valid marriage between Charles Kwadwo Fosu and Akosua Serwah, which was celebrated on December 23, 2004, in Bornheim, Germany.

According to the family, the Embassy further clarified that the marriage “had not been dissolved by divorce but ended with the decease of the husband on 26 July 2025.”

The family stated that this official confirmation settles all speculation surrounding the marital status of the late highlife musician, describing it as “a final and authoritative validation” of Mrs. Fosu’s position as the lawful widow of the late artiste.

In the same statement, the family expressed gratitude to fans and sympathizers for their patience and continued support of Mrs. Fosu during what they described as an emotionally difficult period.

They assured the public that their aim is not conflict but clarity, justice, and the preservation of the truth and dignity of their beloved relative.

The family also disclosed that a formal investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of death of the late musician, in collaboration with the Ghana Police CID.

Additionally, a new funeral committee, comprising only direct relatives of the deceased, has been formed to oversee arrangements for a befitting farewell.

Further details on the funeral date and venue are expected to be announced after consultations with relevant stakeholders.

Born in 1964, Daddy Lumba was one of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife musicians, known for a career that spanned more than four decades and produced numerous chart-topping hits.

He passed away on July 26, 2025.

Funeral committee pleads with Daddy Lumba’s wives to reconcile amid legal dispute https://www.adomonline.com/funeral-committee-pleads-with-daddy-lumbas-wives-to-reconcile-amid-legal-dispute/ Thu, 16 Oct 2025 17:32:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2589232 The Coordinator of the Funeral Planning Committee for the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has appealed to the musician’s two wives to unite for the sake of peace and understanding as preparations for his funeral continue.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Amankwah urged both women to put aside their differences and work together to give their late husband a befitting burial.

“Customarily, they are both wives, so they should come together and bury their husband. Whatever will bring peace is what we want. All these issues didn’t happen when he was alive, so why now that he is gone? Elders must step in to help resolve this peacefully,” he said.

He added that litigation would not bring lasting peace, stressing the need for an out-of-court settlement since customary rites would still have to be performed, including the Kunayɛ widowhood ritual.

His plea comes in the wake of a legal dispute between the two women. The late musician’s first and legal wife, Akosua Serwah Fosuh, and her children have filed an injunction against the funeral arrangements announced by a committee led by Abusuapanyin Kofi Wusu.

In a statement, Mrs. Fosuh’s family described the announcement of the funeral date, set for December 6, 2025, as “deeply distressing,” saying it was made without their consent.

The Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, has adjourned the hearing of the injunction application to October 28.

Mrs. Fosuh is seeking a declaration that she is the lawful and surviving spouse of the late musician and holds the sole right to perform widowhood rites.

She is also asking the court to restrain the Lumba family head from recognizing or engaging with the second defendant, Priscilla Ofori Atta, also known as Odo Broni, as a spouse of the deceased.

In her suit, Akosua Serwaa is asking the court to declare her as the lawful and surviving spouse of the late musician and to affirm that she alone holds the legal right to perform widowhood rites.

She is further praying the court to restrain the head of the Lumba family, Kofi Owusu Fosu, from recognizing or engaging with the second defendant, Priscilla Ofori Atta, also known as Odo Broni, as a spouse of the deceased.

The plaintiff also wants the court to bar Odo Broni from publicly presenting herself as the surviving wife of Daddy Lumba.

During Thursday’s sitting, counsel for the first defendant filed an application challenging the legal capacity of the plaintiff, urging the court to make a determination on the matter before proceeding.

Her Ladyship Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur also drew attention to an appearance application filed by the parties and directed the respective lawyers to file all responses and applications by October 28.

In a brief remark, the presiding judge encouraged both parties and their families to seek an amicable resolution, citing the significant legacy and national stature of the late Daddy Lumba.

The case, which has attracted public attention due to the high-profile nature of the parties involved, will resume later this month for further proceedings.

In a statement signed by Charlyn Fosuh on behalf of all the children he had with Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, they clarified that they are not involved in any legal proceedings and do not wish to be part of any internal family disputes.

“It has come to our attention that there is an ongoing court process regarding the funeral and burial arrangements of our beloved father, the late Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba,” the statement read.

“We, the children of Akosua Serwaa and Daddy Lumba, wish to clarify that we are not parties to this legal process and that we do not wish to be involved in any disputes or conflicts surrounding the funeral arrangements,” it added.

According to the statement, their only desire is to honour their father’s memory “in a dignified, respectful, and peaceful manner befitting his remarkable life and contributions.”

The children stressed that they remain united in love and respect for their late father and are focused solely on celebrating his legacy and ensuring a fitting farewell. They further appealed to the media and public to exercise restraint in their commentary about the family and the ongoing legal case.

“We kindly ask the general public, especially the media and social media commentators, to be measured and respectful in their commentary regarding the family, any ongoing legal matters, and the funeral arrangements. We believe our father deserves a farewell that reflects the peace, dignity, and unity he valued in life,” the statement said.

Background

The clarification follows reports that Mrs. Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, widow of the late musician, together with her children, had filed an injunction to halt the funeral originally planned for December 6, 2025.

She had claimed in an earlier press release that the nuclear family was not involved in the funeral preparations.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Fosuh and the singer’s elder sister, Ms. Ernestina Fosuh, have jointly issued another statement calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Daddy Lumba’s death. They alleged inconsistencies in accounts of how he passed away in Ghana on July 26, 2025, and called on both Ghanaian and German authorities to intervene.

The internal tensions within the family appear to have deepened following the injunction and the call for an international probe.

Despite these developments, the children have reiterated their commitment to peace and unity, emphasizing their focus on celebrating their father’s legacy rather than engaging in disputes.

Daddy Lumba, aged 60, was a towering figure in Ghana’s highlife music scene whose songs influenced generations. His death in July 2025 sent shockwaves across Ghana and beyond, prompting an outpouring of tributes to his enduring contribution to Ghanaian music.

German law clashes with Ashanti custom in Daddy Lumba’s funeral dispute https://www.adomonline.com/german-law-clashes-with-ashanti-custom-in-daddy-lumbas-funeral-dispute/ Mon, 13 Oct 2025 08:06:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587642 The contentious funeral dispute paralyses plans for Ghanaian highlife icon Daddy Lumba. Legal motions and traditional claims clash in a dramatic confrontation, illuminating the deep schism between European statutory law and West African customary practice.

This deadlock requires immediate judicial intervention, setting an irreversible legal precedent.

Lumba’s End: A Global Icon’s local crisis

Charles Kwadwo Fosu (Daddy Lumba) passed away in Accra on July 26, 2025, at age 60.

As one of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife musicians, his death triggered a nationwide outpouring of grief. Crucially, he held dual citizenship (Ghanaian and German), having been legally married in Bornheim, Germany, to Akosua Serwah Fosuh.

This dual nationality and dual marital life directly precipitate the current crisis, turning a private family dispute into a complex international legal affair.

Global tributes, Local dispute

Lumba’s death sparked global mourning, underscoring his influence beyond Ghana. His career spanned nearly four decades, yielding over 33 albums and countless hits.

In honour of this legacy, the Creative Arts Agency, in collaboration with the Fosu family, organised a candlelight vigil at the Independence Square on August 2, 2025.

The funeral is planned for Kumasi, (December 6, we are told), but the date remains dependent on the legal resolution. A one-week memorial observation was held in Accra on August 30, 2025.

The crisis began when the immediate family, led by Akosua Serwah Fosuh, sought a court injunction against the extended family’s unilateral December 6 funeral plans, citing a “complete lack of respect” and non-consultation.

The extended family, led by Abusuapanyin Kofi Wusu, staunchly defends their actions, insisting that traditional leaders followed due process by notifying high authorities. Kofi Wusu issued a defiant challenge: “Our customs are older than any court in this land.”

The Widening Legal Gulf: Divorce, Bigamy, and Burial Control

The conflict has been amplified by two major legal precedents and a new defence:

I. Customary Dissolution vs. Statutory Marriage

The core legal crisis rests in the musician’s 2004 German statutory marriage, which under German Civil Code (BGB Section 1306), strictly enforces monogamy. Ghanaian law generally holds that a subsequent customary marriage would constitute bigamy.

However, the Fosu Royal Family has redefined the dispute with a powerful counter-claim:

  • In an October 1, 2025 letter, the family’s lawyers asserted that Akosua Serwah Fosuh’s marriage was no longer legally valid. They allege her refusal to relocate to Ghana with her then ill husband constituted desertion and that she subsequently presented traditional drinks to signify customary dissolution.
  • If proven, this customary dissolution would legally predate Daddy Lumba’s death, potentially invalidating the German statutory marriage in the Ghanaian court system.
  • The family explicitly states they now recognise Priscilla Ofori (“Odo Broni”), who lived with the musician for over fifteen years and has six children with him, as the late musician’s wife. They also cite holding pre-demise instructions, suggesting the existence of a will or final directive that could dictate arrangements and estate distribution.

The court must now rule on the capacity of an Akan customary rite to legally terminate a preceding German statutory marriage under Ghana’s pluralistic system, which typically requires a court decree.

II. Legal Precedent on Burial

Despite the legal widow’s strong claim over marital status and inheritance, Ghanaian law separates marital rights from burial control.

The key precedent, Neequaye v. Okoe, established that under customary law, the body belongs to the extended family, not the nuclear family.

This suggests Abusuapanyin Kofi Wusu has the ultimate authority to proceed with funeral arrangements, provided the widow is consulted. However, the family’s claim of holding Daddy Lumba’s final instructions (a will) could override these customary burial rights.

Imminent Judicial Showdown and Global Impact

The Lumba funeral dispute is a profound test of Ghana’s legal pluralism, confronting diaspora statutory rights against indigenous customary law.

The eventual judicial outcome will mandate how Ghana treats the Latin legal principle of lex loci celebrationis (law of the place where the marriage was celebrated) when it conflicts with domestic customary norms.

This high-profile case sets a critical court precedent for the Ghanaian diaspora, impacting inheritance, property division, and burial rights globally.

Upholding the customary dissolution would legitimise Odo Broni’s status and potentially entitle her to a share of the estate under the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), which otherwise grants clear statutory rights to the legal spouse and children.

The next critical moment is the court appearance scheduled for October 16, 2025, where the judge is expected to hear arguments on the injunction application, providing the first major legal clarity on the burial control and marital status claims.

The judiciary faces the difficult task of rendering a judgment that respects the rule of law while providing a path for the Fosu family to perform culturally appropriate final rites.

This judicial wisdom is essential, not only to lay a highlife icon to rest with dignity but to provide clarity for the millions of Ghanaians who live between the global statutory world and their traditional roots.

Daddy Lumba’s family fires back at estranged wife over marriage, funeral claims https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumbas-family-fires-back-at-estranged-wife-over-marriage-funeral-claims/ Sun, 12 Oct 2025 08:25:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587458

The Fosu Royal Family of Parkoso and Nsuta has broken its silence on claims made by Akosua Serwah Fosuh, the estranged wife of the late Ghanaian music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

In a statement issued through their solicitors, the family addressed letters reportedly sent by Akosua Serwah on September 1 and 10, 2025, concerning matters relating to the late musician’s estate, funeral arrangements, and marital claims.

According to the family, Akosua Serwah abandoned Daddy Lumba about 15 years ago during his time of illness, refusing to relocate with him to Ghana for medical treatment. They stated that she “deserted him in his difficult time of need.”

The letter further revealed that in February 2018, Akosua Serwah wrote to Daddy Lumba expressing her intention to initiate divorce proceedings, making several allegations which the late musician denied.

The family’s solicitors noted that Daddy Lumba’s then-lawyers responded to that letter, challenging her to proceed with the divorce, as he had already moved on with his life.

The family also disclosed that Akosua Serwah had presented traditional drinks to the Fosu family, signifying the customary dissolution of her marriage to the late musician, a gesture that was duly accepted.

“By Akan tradition and the customs of the Fosu Royal Family, the presentation and acceptance of such drinks effectively dissolve a marriage. Once a person passes, their body and funeral arrangements are the responsibility of their family. Therefore, your client has no right to determine how the Fosu Royal Family buries their dead.”

They added that if Akosua Serwah’s name appears in any funeral brochure at all, it would be “a favour from the family because of the children she has with him.”

The family recognized one Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, as the wife who lived with Daddy Lumba for over 15 years until his passing, describing her as the woman who “stood by him through thick and thin” and bore six children with him.

“Odo Broni is a recognized wife of the late Daddy Lumba, and the Fosu Royal Family acknowledges her as such,” the statement affirmed.

On the issue of the late musician’s estate, the family clarified that all properties owned by Daddy Lumba form part of his estate and will be distributed fairly among his children and their mothers in due course. They warned that no individual should attempt to lay claim to any property until legal processes are concluded.

The solicitors, who were the last legal representatives of the late highlife legend, also revealed that they hold written instructions from Daddy Lumba detailing how he wished his funeral and estate matters to be handled.

The Fosu Royal Family urged all parties, including Akosua Serwah, to cooperate peacefully to ensure a dignified burial for the celebrated musician.

Stay away from Daddy Lumba’s properties – Fosu Family warns amid estate dispute https://www.adomonline.com/stay-away-from-daddy-lumbas-properties-fosu-family-warns-amid-estate-dispute/ Sun, 12 Oct 2025 08:24:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587460 The Fosu Royal Family of Parkoso and Nsuta, custodians of the late music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has cautioned all parties to desist from making claims or taking possession of his properties until the family has officially concluded discussions on the fair distribution of his estate.

In a strongly worded statement issued through their solicitors, the family emphasized that “all his properties form part of his estate which the family, together with the children and their mothers, shall work together to ensure fair distribution to all who are entitled to benefit.”

The family, through its lawyers, further advised that no individual has the right to unilaterally access, sell, or occupy any of the late musician’s assets until the estate has been legally administered.

The family also revealed that Daddy Lumba left behind specific instructions regarding how he wished his funeral and burial to be conducted, as well as guidelines for the management of his estate.

They therefore urged all concerned parties, including Akosua Serwah, to cooperate with the family to ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell for the music legend.

“To avoid any unproductive litigation among the family and children that may result in shame for the dead, the Fosu family is open to peaceful discussions… but until then, let all persons stay away from the properties,” the statement concluded.

The caution follows letters and claims reportedly made by the late musician’s estranged wife, Akosua Serwah Fosuh, who is based in Germany.

The Fosu family alleges that Akosua Serwah deserted the award-winning highlife icon more than a decade ago when he fell ill and has since had no role in his care or affairs.

The family’s statement added that Akosua Serwah had traditionally presented drinks to signify the dissolution of her marriage to the late musician, a custom that marks the end of a union in Akan tradition.

According to the family, the late musician’s partner, Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, lived with him through his difficult years and is recognized by the royal family as his legitimate wife.

“It is our clear instruction to state that Odo Broni is a recognized wife of the late Daddy Lumba and same is recognized by the Fosu Royal Family,” the statement read.

Daddy Lumba’s wife and children seek injunction on funeral arrangements https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumbas-wife-and-children-seek-injunction-on-funeral-arrangements/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 16:34:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586957 The direct family of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has filed an injunction against funeral arrangements announced for him.

The direct family, comprising Lumba’s first (legal) wife, Akosua Serwah Fosuh, and their children, claim the funeral arrangements were made without their consent.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, 9th October 2025, the direct family, represented by Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh, described the public announcement of the musician’s funeral plans as “deeply distressing,” saying it was first heard of through social media.

According to them, Abusuapanyin Kofi Wusu and a supposed funeral committee had “acted in their own interests” by fixing a funeral date for 6th December 2025 without consulting the deceased’s immediate family.

The statement said the move showed “a complete lack of respect” for Mrs. Fosuh, who is still mourning her husband and making arrangements to travel to Ghana for the funeral.

The release also noted that since Daddy Lumba’s passing on 26th July 2025 in Accra, there had been “a continuous and deliberate effort to marginalise” his legal wife in funeral discussions. The family further revealed that the cause of death remains under investigation.

They reminded the public that the late musician was legally married to Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh on 23rd December 2004 in Bornheim, Germany, and that under German law, bigamy is strictly prohibited.

Citing Section 1306 of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch), the family said, “A marriage may not be entered into if one of the persons is already married,” stressing that any second marriage under such circumstances is “legally void.”

The family said they had therefore taken legal steps to halt all funeral and burial activities “until proper dialogue and consensus are achieved.”

“To all Lumba fans and music lovers across the world, we deeply appreciate your love, loyalty, and patience during this difficult time,” the statement read. “We kindly ask you to disregard any unofficial announcements regarding funeral arrangements.”

It added that a “respectful and dignified farewell” will eventually be given to the late musician, befitting his legacy and the love he shared with millions through his music.

Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife icons, passed away in July 2025 at the age of 60. Known for his unmatched artistry, he produced over 30 albums during his four-decade career, including timeless hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Theresa Abebrese, Yentie Obiaa, Menya Mpo, and Woho Kyere. His music remains a staple in Ghanaian homes and continues to influence new generations of artistes.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that the request came after all arrangements had already been agreed upon.

While preparing for the Valentine concert at the Accra International Conference Centre (Grand Arena), Nabil said he and his team had finalised a list of supporting artistes when Daddy Lumba placed a call through Serwaa Amihere to insist Ofori be dropped.

“We made our first payment, and publicity started. One day, I saw Serwaa Amihere calling me. She said Daddy was on the line and wanted to speak to me about something going on. He said, ‘Nabil, how are you?’. I want you to take Ofori off the show,” he recounted.

When Nabil pressed for a reason, he said Lumba claimed Ofori had not been included in the initial list of performers. When reminded that Ofori was part of the arrangement, Lumba then asserted he had heard Ofori had made negative remarks about him.

Nabil said he was stunned, given that Ofori had performed at Lumba’s birthday party just days earlier.

That notwithstanding, he noted that Ofori Amponsah performed at the event.

According to Nabil, that was the second time he had tried to secure Daddy Lumba for a show. His first attempt in 2012 failed because he could not raise the GH ₵300,000 fee Lumba demanded.

The show, organised by Nabil Alhassan and his Event Factory Ghana team as Valentine with Daddy Lumba, drew strong attendance and is already regarded as one of Lumba’s standout concerts.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on 29th September 1964, passed away on 26th July 2025 at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

He left behind a legacy of over 33 albums and a catalogue of timeless hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asɛm, Theresa, Makra Mo, Yentie Obiaa, and Ohia Asɛm.

Songbird Gyakie has offered fans a glimpse into her father Nana Acheampong’s grief following the passing of Ghana’s highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

Nana Acheampong was not just a friend to Lumba but also his brother in music. Together, they formed one of the most iconic duos in Ghanaian music history, The Lumba Brothers.

In an interview on Hitz FM, Gyakie explained that her father’s silence since the news broke was not neglect but circumstance, as he is currently outside the country. She revealed that the loss has been difficult for him to process.

“My dad is still trying to process the whole thing. It really took a huge toll on him. This is someone who has been with him right from the beginning of his career. We have been in conversations before, during, and after his passing. Since he isn’t in the country, I had to represent him at the one-week. But our family has been supportive and we’ve been by his side through it all,” she said.

Nana Acheampong and Daddy Lumba’s friendship spanned decades. The two formed the famous Lumba Brothers in Germany in the late 1980s and released their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989, a project that helped usher in a new wave of Ghanaian highlife still celebrated today.

Though they later pursued solo careers, their bond endured, making Lumba’s death a deeply personal blow to Acheampong.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025, the solemn ceremony will now be held at Black Star Square in Accra.

However, the plan was altered after the La State Council reminded the family that a ban on drumming and noise-making had taken effect in the La Traditional Area on August 11, 2025, and will remain in place until September 5.

Since the stadium falls within that jurisdiction, council officials advised that the event be either postponed or relocated.

In a statement, the family expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the last-minute adjustment.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and deeply appreciate your understanding and continued support,” the announcement read.

La Council upholds funeral ban amid plans for Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance https://www.adomonline.com/la-council-upholds-funeral-ban-amid-plans-for-daddy-lumbas-one-week-observance/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 19:50:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572282 The La State Council has cautioned the public against organising or taking part in funerals and related activities within its jurisdiction during the ongoing ban on noisemaking and funerals.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, the Council noted that its attention had been drawn to media advertisements announcing the one-week funeral celebration of highlife legend Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

While extending condolences to the family, friends, and fans of the late musician, the Council stressed that the traditional ban, which began on Monday, August 11, 2025, remains in force across the La Traditional Area, covering the main township through Maalejor on the Dodowa road to Ayi Mensah at the foot of the Aburi mountains.

The directive prohibits all forms of noisemaking, including funerals and gatherings connected to them.

According to the Council, the period is sacred as traditional authorities enter the spiritual realm, and any act that disrupts cultural and spiritual order will not be tolerated.

“All persons, families, groups, and organisers are cautioned against attempts to hold or facilitate funeral events during this period. Any such activities must be postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled outright,” the statement said.

The ban is expected to remain in effect until Friday, September 5, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. The Council reiterated its sympathy to the bereaved family and assured its support after the ban is lifted.

LA COUNCIL WARNS ORGANIZERS AGAINST HOLDING ONE WEEK ‘FUNERAL’ CELEBRATION FOR LATE DADDY LUMBA

“The attention of the La State Council has been drawn to certain advertisements circulating in the media regarding the one-week funeral celebration of the late legendary highlife music icon, Charles Kojo Fosu (a.k.a. Daddy Lumba).

On behalf of Niimei and the good people of La, the La Homowo Planning Committee wishes to first express its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire nation for the loss of such a towering international music icon whose legacy remains undeniable.

However, the Council wishes to firmly remind the general public that, effective Monday, 11th August 2025, a ban on noisemaking came into force across the entire La Traditional Area stretching from the main La township to Maalejor on the Dodowa road and Ayi Mensah at the foot of the Aburi mountains. Aside from the general noisemaking, this ban also strictly prohibits funerals and all funeral-related activities of any kind. During this sacred period, Niimei would have entered the spiritual realm, and as such, no activity that contravenes the cultural and spiritual order will be tolerated.

The La State Council, therefore, cautions all persons, families, groups, and organisers against any attempt to hold or facilitate such funeral-related events within the La Traditional Area during the ban. Any such planned activity must be postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled outright.

Let it be made clear that there shall be no compromises whatsoever in the enforcement of this directive. Our duty is to protect, uphold, and preserve the rich cultural heritage and sacred traditions handed down to us by our forebears, and this will be done without fear or favour.

The La State Council further warns that any individual or group that disregards this directive does so at their own risk and will face the full weight of customary and lawful sanctions.

For the avoidance of doubt, the ban will remain in full force until Friday, 5th September 2025, at 6:00 pm.

Once again, the Council sympathises with the family of the late Daddy Lumba and assures them of the support of La State at the appropriate time when the ban has been duly lifted.”

Daddy Lumba’s team disowns his ‘self-appointed manager’ https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumbas-team-disowns-his-self-appointed-manager/ Sun, 03 Aug 2025 09:56:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562960

The management team of the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, has issued a statement distancing itself from anyone presenting himself as the official manager of the late musician.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the team described such claims as false and misleading, noting that the Daddy Lumba brand is handled by an official management group and not by any single individual.

“We wish to clarify that the Daddy Lumba Brand is managed by an official team, not by any single individual. Therefore, anyone or any account presenting themselves as ‘the manager of the late Daddy Lumba’ is not authorized to represent, speak for, or act on behalf of the brand,” the statement read.

While the statement did not directly name anyone, fingers are pointing to the only individual publicly presenting himself as the late musician’s manager.

The team urged the public and media to disregard such unauthorized claims and to contact his official numbers for accurate information or funeral-related enquiries.

The statement concluded with appreciation to fans and the general public for their continued support.

Kofi Okyere-Darko: Random thoughts on growing up around Daddy Lumba https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-okyere-darko-random-thoughts-on-growing-up-around-daddy-lumba/ Sat, 02 Aug 2025 13:30:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562761 I first met Papa in 1990, thanks to my auntie, Mrs. Felicia Danso. She had told us she had a surprise waiting at her North Legon home, and boy, was it a surprise! My mum and I joined the rest of the family for what felt like a typical fun day: loud music, kids running around, and the mothers deep in conversation.

-Then a horn honked at the gate. My cousins Joe, Anita and I rushed to open it, and there he was. The living legend himself, Daddy Lumba, driving in like a scene straight out of TV. We were beside ourselves with excitement.

That’s how it all began. We were introduced as his younger cousins, tied by our mothers’ roots in the Bretuo-Aduana lineage of Asante Mampong. I must’ve been around 14 or 15 years old, and from then on, I started spending more time with him at home with Gina, at Charles Amoah’s place in Awudome or with Willie Roy in Tema, where demos were always in the works. It was during these moments that I truly fell in love with highlife music and developed an eye for artistry and musicianship.

When computer schools started springing up everywhere, Papa pulled me aside and said, “Nana, I think you should enrol, this is where the world is heading.” The next day, it had been paid for me to start a computer program at Arab Libyan Cultural Centre on the Ring Road. He was always ahead of his time.

During school vacations, I’d help out at his music shop in Okaishie, just opposite the MTTU. Joe and I worked alongside Sister Abena (his wife Akosua Serwaa’s older sister). The shop was like a magnet for underground musicians, some hopeful, some discouraged, but all inspired. Getting through the gate to meet him was a mission in itself, you needed more than luck, you needed Papa’s green light.

That little corner of Dome, introduced me to so many greats like Nana Tuffour, Oheneba Kissi, Afia Ampofoa, KK Kabobo (another proud son of Adansi), Felix Owusu, Dada KD (who often worked with Charles Amoah), Tommy Wiredu, Frank Mensah… Papa adored their talent. There was also our brother Papa Shee, then his dancer, and a quiet, persistent young guy who often waited patiently at the gate with his demo, none other than Ofori Amponsah. That patience paid off with a collaboration album in 1999–2000. I would later manage Ofori for four incredible years.

One random afternoon, we were driving from an interview at Vibe FM, tuned in to Radio Gold (the gold standard back then for authentic Ghanaian music). An ad came on calling for new radio presenters. Papa suddenly turned to me and said, “Nana, this one’s for you, let’s apply.” I jumped at the idea, I’d always dreamed of doing radio. With help from Kwame Farkye at Sunshine Radio, I recorded a demo. Papa himself drove me to Radio Gold to meet Kwaku Boafo-Agyemang, the Programs Manager. And just like that, my media journey began in 1997.

Thank you, Papa, for seeing something in many of us before we even saw it ourselves. For being generous with your time, intentional with your influence, and unapologetic about helping others win. You changed my life and the lives of countless others. You weren’t just a legend on stage, you were magic offstage too.

Sleep well Papa!

Gospel musician ACP Kofi Sarpong urged the public to remember the bereaved family in prayer.

“This is a painful moment for the wife, children, and entire family. Let’s lift them up in prayer during these difficult times,” he appealed.

Why late Daddy Lumba was named Kwadwo despite being a Tuesday born https://www.adomonline.com/why-late-daddy-lumba-was-named-kwadwo-despite-being-a-tuesday-born/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 09:06:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561781

Daddy Lumba’s real name is Charles Kwadwo Fosu, which might suggest he was born on Monday, given the traditional Ghanaian naming convention where “Kwadwo” signifies a male born on Monday.

However, his birthdate, September 29, 1964, actually fell on a Tuesday, contradicting this assumption. Interestingly, in Ghanaian culture, Tuesday-born males are typically named Kwabena, which aligns with Daddy Lumba’s given name Kwabena.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, ET Akonor, Lumba’s friend and confidant has disclosed the reason for the music icon’s name.

“Lumba is a Tuesday born. He is Kwabena. The Kwadwo Fosu is a compound surname of his father so he would have been Kwabena Kwadwo Fosu which would have been odd so they just gave him Charles Kwadwo Fosu,” he revealed.

Daddy Lumba was born on September 29, 1964 and hailed from Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

He started his music career at age 16 and became the leader of the then Juaben Secondary School choir in 1983.

After secondary school, Daddy Lumba formed the Lumba Brothers group with his friends Yaw and Kwabena and girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese.

With the help of his girlfriend Theresa, Daddy Lumba travelled to Germany after school to seek greener pastures and met Ernest Nana Acheampong.

Nana Acheampong, another highlife legend introduced Daddy Lumba to highlife music as all Lumba knew then was gospel music.

They formed the group called Lumba Brothers and rose to fame with many songs starting with “Yɛɛyɛ aka akwantuo mu”.

They released many songs until they went their separate ways.

Nana Poku Ashis urges Charterhouse to organise national celebration for Daddy Lumba https://www.adomonline.com/nana-poku-ashis-urges-charterhouse-to-organise-national-celebration-for-daddy-lumba/ Wed, 30 Jul 2025 13:30:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561466 Nana Poku Ashis, manager of highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena, has called on event organisers Charterhouse to spearhead a national celebration in honour of the late music legend, Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie, Ashis proposed that the tribute event be held ahead of the funeral of the Yentie Obiaa hitmaker.

“The iconic Lumba needs a national celebration, and I am urging Charterhouse to lead this campaign,” he said. “Try and put together an event where we will have our stars come and honour the legend. Before his burial, we should do something like that—maybe a Fameye or Kwabena Kwabena performing a Lumba song—just like we see at the Ghana Music Awards. Even if it’s a paid event, I’m sure it’ll be sold out.”

Ashis described Daddy Lumba as one of Ghana’s most revered entertainers and recounted a conversation with a friend who claimed that Lumba was the only musician successive governments “feared.”

“For more than a decade, presidential candidates from the two main political parties were cautious of Lumba. He could be with you today and be with the other party tomorrow, and no one dared touch him. Other artistes did political songs and suffered for it—but not Lumba,” he added.

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, Daddy Lumba was one of Ghana’s most iconic highlife musicians, with a career spanning over three decades. He released more than 30 albums, including Aben Wɔha, Yentie Obiaa, and Theresa, cementing his place as a household name.

He passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness, leaving behind a rich musical legacy set to inspire generations of Ghanaian artistes.

Lumba’s reputation would have been ruined if… – Mystic Twins https://www.adomonline.com/lumbas-reputation-would-have-been-ruined-if-mystic-twins/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 19:58:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561222 Ghanaian spiritual duo Mystic Twins, McMaine and McKenzie, have claimed that Highlife legend Daddy Lumba’s reputation would have been tarnished if he had lived longer.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, hosted by Kwame Dadzie, the twin brothers said this explains why legends do not live long.

“If Daddy Lumba had lived up to 70 or 80, his name would have been spoilt. Legends don’t live for long. He lived too long,” they stated.

They explained that while Lumba was alive some people had already started making up negative stories about the legendary highlife musician.

Speaking on spirituality in the music industry, while describing most prophets as “emotional opportunists, the Mystic Twins added that no false death prophecies about celebrities can have any impact on them.

“We are messengers from God; you’ll go after you’re done delivering your message,” they said.

Making reference to recent death prophecy about Shatta Wale by Counselor DY Donkor, they mentioned that when the time for dancehall artiste Shatta Wale to die comes, “he’ll go, but not based on fake prophecies.”

The Mystic Twins, known in private life as Nana Akwasi Agyemang Panyin (McMaine) and Nana Akwasi Agyemang Kakra (McKenzie), describe themselves as spiritual figures who believe that music carries spiritual energy.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, reportedly died on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at the age of 59. His death was confirmed by a family representative through his radio station, DLFM.

He is celebrated as one of Ghana’s greatest Highlife musicians with a career spanning more than three decades and numerous hit songs.

Making a statement on the floor of the House, Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, described the late musician as “one of Ghana’s greatest musical legends, a true maestro and an icon whose influence transcended generations and national borders.”

Mr. Konadu praised Daddy Lumba’s enduring contribution to the music industry, calling him a torchbearer whose career was marked by timeless melodies, rich lyrical depth, and powerful social commentary.

She called on government to consider a state burial for the musician.

Daddy Lumba was an enigmatic and eccentric music icon – Okraku-Mantey reflects https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumba-was-an-enigmatic-and-eccentric-music-icon-okraku-mantey-reflects/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 14:17:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561079 Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has shared heartfelt reflections on the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, describing him as an enigmatic and eccentric figure whose true personality remained elusive, even to those who worked closely with him.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, 28th July, Mr Okraku-Mantey remarked, “Lumba, I’m not sure anybody in the industry can say that, ‘I really know him.’ I want to see that person who will come out and say [they do].”

According to him, his interactions with the celebrated musician were strictly professional, but even in that context, Lumba’s personality stood out. “Off work, he is the love-me, hate-me type of character,” he said, pointing to the complex nature of the late icon.

Mr Okraku-Mantey observed that while many have publicly praised Daddy Lumba over the years, others who have had personal encounters with him may have a more nuanced perspective.

“I’m sure people who have worked with him, who have heard very good things about him right now, some of them are also saying, ‘Is this the same Lumba they are talking about?’ Because if he has to be tough and rough, he can be. And he can be extremely nice,” he explained.

He also cited a memorable phrase Daddy Lumba once used on his radio station, DL FM: “Makra mo, abia na mu ehu me biom”—translated as, “Goodbye, perhaps you may never see me again.” The line, he noted, dates back to the Biribi Gyegye Wo album, released around the time he completed his studies at St Augustine’s College.

Describing Lumba as an “eccentric performer”, Mr Okraku-Mantey said such characteristics are often found in truly exceptional artistes.

“Most great performers are eccentric. You need that level of mind to be able to become as great as they become. It is difficult to understand such people,” he added.

Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, 26th July, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. His death marks the end of an era for Ghanaian highlife music.

Secular star, sacred voice: Daddy Lumba’s 24 gospel songs before his death https://www.adomonline.com/secular-star-sacred-voice-daddy-lumbas-24-gospel-songs-before-his-death/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 13:48:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561070 Last Saturday, at precisely 8:54 a.m., I was wrapping up the Weekend City Show on Joy FM when the unexpected happened: word reached me that Highlife legend Daddy Lumba had passed away.

Given the frequency with which such rumours had circulated in recent years, false alarms that had surfaced at least a handful of times over the past five years, I instinctively dismissed it as another hoax, unworthy of attention.

But that changed moments after I stepped out of the studio. I came across a cryptic post on Facebook by Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central. It was ambiguous, but it lingered. I paused. “A-Plus is usually a reliable source,” I said to myself.

Discussions had already begun among a few colleagues working the weekend shift. Social media was aflame with speculation, as posts, comments and tributes flooded timelines across platforms. Despite the noise, the news remained unverified. That was until hours later when confirmation came from a family representative via Daddy Lumba’s own radio station.

The weight of the news struck deeply. My heart sank. But as life insists, it moved forward. I continued with my Saturday routine, albeit with a heavy spirit.

It wasn’t until Monday morning that I truly began to reckon with the loss. As I prepared for the gospel-themed Monday edition of The Overdrive, Ghana’s beloved evening music programme on Joy FM, I felt compelled to explore Daddy Lumba’s discography with fresh eyes.

To my astonishment, I uncovered more than two dozen gospel tracks, over 24 songs that bore the unmistakable signature of the man we all knew and celebrated as a Highlife virtuoso.

In those moments, I realised that beyond the glitz, the hits and the Highlife heritage, Daddy Lumba had quietly built a spiritual legacy that now demands its own recognition.

Below are 24 gospel and inspirational songs that the musical genius Daddy Lumba blessed the world with:

Big Akwes hot over comment on Daddy Lumba’s demise https://www.adomonline.com/big-akwes-hot-over-comment-on-daddy-lumbas-demise/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 11:08:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560861

Kumawood actor and media personality Big Akwes has come under fire following remarks he made regarding the death of highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

In an interview, Big Akwes claimed the musician’s passing brought him relief, citing the extent of Lumba’s health challenges in recent years.

He referenced the artist’s prolonged illness, including complications from spinal surgery and being wheelchair-bound for nearly three years.

According to Big Akwes, the late musician had been in constant pain and even missed a GH¢400,000 performance opportunity at a funeral a month before his death due to his deteriorating condition.

He described Lumba’s final days as physically taxing, adding that a recent music video shoot made it evident the singer’s condition had worsened.

However, his remarks, especially the suggestion that he felt “happy” about the musician’s death due to his suffering, have been widely criticised as poorly timed and insensitive.

Many fans and industry players say while it is important to acknowledge the legend’s health struggles, the tone and timing of such comments are inappropriate so soon after his passing.

Big Akwes has often found himself at the center of controversy, with critics regularly urging him to tone down his commentary.

Daddy Lumba, known in private life as Charles Kwadwo Fosu, died recently after a decorated music career spanning over three decades. Plans are underway for a vigil and other commemorative events in his honour.

Highlife Legend Daddy Lumba’s posthumous reign deepens on Apple Music Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/highlife-legend-daddy-lumbas-posthumous-reign-deepens-on-apple-music-ghana/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 10:46:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560940 The sudden passing of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba on Saturday, July 26, has catalysed an unprecedented surge in his music’s popularity on Apple Music Ghana. This phenomenon is far more than a fleeting moment of grief. It is a profound cultural impact of an artiste whose work captivated and resonated deeply with generations of Ghanaians for nearly four decades. The data paints a vivid picture of a nation united in mourning and deep appreciation.

An Unprecedented Chart Domination
Just days following his death, Daddy Lumba’s songs have saturated the Apple Music Ghana Top Songs chart. “Makra Mo” notably commands the highly coveted No. 1 spot, a poignant symbol of the renewed emotional connection Ghanaians feel to his music.

This isn’t just a peak; it’s a profound, organic response. Other classic hits, including “Ankwanoma” at No. 5, “Sika” at No. 6, “Se Sumye Kasa A” at No. 13, “Mpempem Do Me” at No. 15, “Mensei Da Harry (Remix)” at No. 17, and “Biribi Gyegye Wo” at No. 18, demonstrate a widespread embrace of his extensive catalogue.

In total, a staggering 30 of his songs now occupy positions within the Top 100, an unprecedented feat for any Ghanaian artiste on an African Apple Music chart. This overwhelming presence on the charts highlights the immediate and deeply felt public response to his demise, showing how his melodies continue to provide comfort and a collective memory.

The Power of Posthumous Popularity
The powerful dynamic of an artiste’s death leading to increased music sales is recognised globally, from the likes of Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston. However, Daddy Lumba’s case in Ghana presents a particularly compelling and unique example of cultural resonance. The sheer volume of songs re-entering and dominating the charts signifies more than just casual listening; it suggests a deliberate act of remembrance, a national tribute from a grieving nation and its diaspora.

Fans are not just listening; they are revisiting his work, finding solace and connection in his timeless melodies and poignant lyrics that often spoke directly to the Ghanaian experience, from the struggles of “Yee Ye Aka Akwantuom” reflecting immigrant life to the timeless advice in “Sika.”

This outpouring of support demonstrates the enduring power of music to unite people across continents in times of shared sorrow. His legacy extends beyond simple entertainment, evolving into a cherished cultural heritage that bridges geographical divides for Ghanaians living abroad.

Further solidifying his global appeal, his 2008 song “Mpempem Do Me” was notably featured on King Charles III’s Commonwealth Day Playlist in March 2025.

This placed him on a curated list alongside international titans like Beyoncé and Bob Marley, powerfully demonstrating his profound artistry that transcended national borders. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama eloquently stated, “Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives,” adding that while “the beats to his memorable songs may have died down, his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.”

A Cultural Icon’s Lasting Imprint
Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a foundational cultural institution in Ghana. His music often reflected societal nuances, exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and everyday life, making him relatable across generations. This current chart domination is a powerful affirmation of that deep-seated connection. It solidifies his status as arguably Ghana’s most influential musician.

A Nation’s Vigil: August 2nd and Beyond

The national sentiment extends beyond streaming numbers. The Creative Arts Agency (CAA), in collaboration with his family, has announced a National Candlelight Vigil in his honor set for Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This event is part of a wider global tribute, with simultaneous vigils planned in key diaspora cities across Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands. This coordinated international effort underscores the profound impact Daddy Lumba had on the Ghanaian identity worldwide. As the CAA stated, “Your presence will not only honor the legacy of an icon but also unite us in celebrating the power of music, culture, and community.”

This emotional resonance is now translating into tangible data on streaming platforms. It proves that authentic artistry fosters lasting emotional bonds, which manifest with striking intensity during moments of loss.

This emotional resonance is now translating into tangible data on streaming platforms and organized national and international tributes. It proves that authentic artistry cultivates lasting emotional bonds, which manifest with striking intensity during moments of loss.

The widespread resurgence in his music consumption undeniably highlights the indelible mark he left on the Ghanaian music landscape and on the hearts of its people.

His passing, as former President Nana Akufo-Addo noted, saw even political rivals “find common ground in sorrow,” a true testament to his unifying power. The collective embrace of Daddy Lumba’s music in this period of national mourning is a powerful reminder that some legacies are not diminished by death, but rather illuminated, continuing to inspire and unite.

Only his wife and kids truly knew him – Okraku-Mantey on late Daddy Lumba [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/only-his-wife-and-kids-truly-knew-him-okraku-mantey-on-late-daddy-lumba-video/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 09:45:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560876 Venerated music producer and politician Mark Okraku-Mantey has revealed that despite Daddy Lumba’s immense public fame, very few people truly knew the Highlife legend on a personal level.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Okraku-Mantey described the late musician as a deeply private and introverted individual, whose real character was only known to his immediate family.

“Anyone who claims to know Daddy Lumba closely is lying. Only his wife and kids truly understood him,” he stated.

“He had a love-me-or-hate-me personality. He wasn’t out there; all his focus was on music,” he added.

Okraku-Mantey praised Lumba’s artistic brilliance, describing him as a meticulous and thoughtful creator who conducted extensive research before releasing any song.

“He speaks volumes through his music—what he doesn’t say publicly, he sings,” he said.

The touching tribute comes as the nation mourns the death of the Highlife icon, who passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. He was 60.

How late Daddy Lumba got his stage name https://www.adomonline.com/how-late-daddy-lumba-got-his-stage-name/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 08:18:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560812 Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, has shed light on the fascinating story behind how Ghana’s late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, got his iconic name.

In a recent interview, Fredyma recounted how Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately called Daddy Lumba, adopted his stage name from a source of deep historical and personal inspiration.

According to him, the name “Lumba” was influenced by Patrice Lumumba, the revered Congolese independence hero.

While attending Juaben Secondary School, Lumba was part of a school choir that performed a song about Lumumba. The song’s message — celebrating strength, leadership, and a sense of purpose — struck a chord with the young musician.

“The song about Patrice Lumumba stayed with him. It symbolised strength, leadership, and purpose—qualities that mirrored his own journey,” Fredyma explained.

This admiration for the African revolutionary would eventually inspire Charles to adopt “Lumba” as his stage name, in honour of the man whose story had shaped his early musical consciousness.

As his career advanced, the name evolved. He added “Daddy” to “Lumba” — a symbolic representation of maturity, fatherhood, and a nurturing bond with his audience.

Over the years, “Daddy Lumba” became a name synonymous with excellence in Ghanaian Highlife music, representing an artist whose songs transcended generations and social classes.

The touching revelation comes at a time of mourning, as Ghana bids farewell to the Highlife icon, who passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. He was 60.

Daddy Lumba’s death marks the end of an era, but his legacy — including the story behind his name — will continue to inspire musicians and fans alike for years to come.
