Convener of the Kwahu Forum for Truth, Kofi Boahen Dankwa, has raised alarm over what he describes as a “customary coup d’état” unfolding in the Kwahu Traditional Area, warning that Ghana’s chieftaincy institution could descend into chaos if the situation is not addressed urgently.

According to the Forum, the reported destoolment of the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, and the subsequent installation of a rival chief without following established customary and legal processes is not only unlawful but poses a grave threat to the stability of the traditional system.

“This customary coup d’état must not stand. It threatens to erode the sanctity of chieftaincy across Ghana. If such unlawful actions are tolerated, no traditional area will be safe from similar desecration. We must all rise, in dignity and unity, to reject this daylight robbery of our heritage,” Kofi Boahen Dankwa cautioned.

In a statement, Dankwa stressed that there has been no legitimate destoolment process involving the Kwahumanhene, pointing out that no charges have been filed against Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II before the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, which is the only body mandated to adjudicate such disputes.

“There has been no customary destoolment. No hearings. No summons. Nothing. And yet, through misinformation campaigns on social media and calculated public deception, this imposter seeks to convince the world that Daasebre has been deposed. The truth, however, is unshakable: Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II remains the only legally and customarily recognized Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area,” he said.

He also accused the self-proclaimed new Omanhene of unlawfully seizing the Esono Gyimah Mampong Agyei Palace in Abene, surrounding himself with armed guards and sowing fear and division in a once-unified community.

Despite the tension, Kofi Boahen Dankwa lauded Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II for choosing peace and the rule of law over retaliation.

“He has refused to engage in violence or retaliation. He has placed his trust in the rule of law, opting to let the judiciary address the illegality. This decision has not been easy. The occupation of his palace, the sacred seat of Kwahu, cuts really deep. The people of Abene are anxious, dejected, and unsettled. But Daasebre has remained calm, patient, and resolute,” he added.

Dankwa emphasized that the patience of Kwahuman should not be mistaken for weakness but as a demonstration of strength and a deep commitment to justice, tradition, and lawful resolution.

Following his destoolment, Abetifihene, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, has been appointed as the Acting President of the Kwawu Traditional Council.

At a Council meeting in Kwawu Abetifi, the acting president confirmed that they have accepted the decision of the kingmakers and pledged to take good care of Kwawuman.
