Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mrs. Morrison clarified that although she once contested as an independent candidate, she was never formally suspended by the NPP.

“I was not suspended from the NPP. But I know that once you contest as an independent candidate, you forfeit your membership. Officially, the party leadership never wrote to me, and to this day I am still on the party’s parliamentary platforms. In fact, after I was briefly removed, I was later added back, and an apology was even extended to me,” she explained.

The former Gender Minister recounted how she continued to engage with party leadership despite her independent bid.

“During President Akufo-Addo’s last State of the Nation Address, he greeted me, and we had a brief discussion. I remain committed and dedicated to the NPP, and I believe I am even more trusted than some who never contested as independents,” she said.

Mrs. Morrison stressed that the NPP must rise above grudges and personal attacks to build a stronger front.

“We campaigned actively for Dr. Bawumia in Agona West during the 2024 elections. The party must not be built on anger and selfishness. We need peace, and we must iron out our issues and address our differences,” she urged.

She also expressed concern about the state of political discourse in Ghana.

“Our politics is getting dirtier by the day. People now insult and disrespect their elders in the name of politics, and no action is taken. After this amnesty, we must reflect on the issues that brought us here and find ways to resolve them,” she added.

The NPP’s National Council announced the blanket amnesty on August 16, 2025, lifting all suspensions and halting disciplinary proceedings against affected members, though such individuals remain barred from contesting internal elections for two years.

Members who forfeited their membership have also been directed to formally reapply to the national secretariat if they wish to return.

The party explained that while reinstated members are welcomed back, their eligibility to contest in internal elections will remain suspended for a two-year period.

The directive further cautioned party executives at all levels against arbitrary suspensions, insisting that disciplinary matters must strictly adhere to the constitution, due process, and laid-down procedures.

I won’t leave my husband even if I catch him with another woman – Cynthia Morrison https://www.adomonline.com/i-wont-leave-my-husband-even-if-i-catch-him-with-another-woman-cynthia-morrison/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 10:35:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528637

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, has vowed to stand by her husband and not leave him, even if she catches him with another woman.

According to her, this firm decision arises from the strength of their bond as a couple.

She emphasized that it is always better to work on a marriage than to rush into a new one, uncertain of what lies ahead.

The former Agona West Member of Parliament (MP) made these remarks in an interview with Joy News, while recounting how her former aide, Chris Arthur, convinced constituents that her husband had encouraged him to run against her in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

“Even if you come and tell me you saw my husband with another lady, I will not leave him. Even if I go and see him with a lady, I will just pick him up and we will come home,” she said.

“I am telling you on national television because from there, I don’t know the next man I’m going to meet. He could be worse than my husband. So whatever you have, you polish it,” she added.

Cynthia Morrison lost the 2024 election as an independent candidate after losing the NPP parliamentary primary.

She garnered 152 votes, while Christopher Arthur emerged victorious with 240 votes, securing the nomination as the parliamentary candidate.

In the general election, National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Ernestina Ofori Dangbey won the seat with 26,080 votes, while Christopher Arthur polled 20,693 votes.

Despite contesting as an independent candidate in the December 7 election, Madam Morrison has stated that she is still an MP on the NPP’s ticket.

She made this statement at a press briefing on Thursday amidst the controversy over the declaration of four seats, including hers, as vacant.

“I am still an MP on the ticket of the NPP, thank you,” she told journalists.

The other affected MPs are Kwadwo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).

They face potential removal, although a Supreme Court intervention has paused any immediate action.

2024 Polls: Traditional Council distances itself from Cynthia Morrison’s independent candidacy https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-traditional-council-distances-itself-from-cynthia-morrisons-independent-candidacy/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 11:38:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466059 The Traditional Council of Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region has distanced itself from the decision of Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison to contest as an Independent candidate in the December 7 election.

The chiefs have stated that it is not true they are behind her candidacy or that they approve of it.

Speaking on behalf of the Traditional Council at a meeting, the Omankrado of Agona Nyakrom, Nana Ekuful IV, stated that the MP’s aide, Kofi Osei, was spreading falsehoods about their involvement.

Nana Ekuful IV has therefore warned Mr. Osei and Madam Morrison not to mention the chiefs in the course of their campaign activities and to pursue their political agenda independently.

“The reports are that the Agona chiefs are asking Cynthia Morrison to go independent, but we have never met to take any such decision. We haven’t sent anyone to go independent,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Agona Swedru, Nana Kweku Esieni V, also cautioned politicians to stop dragging the chiefs into their activities.

He called on all politicians in Agona West to embark on clean campaigns to promote peace.

It was Monday at 11:30 am.

The mask was part of the visitor’s gear at the emergency ward. The young man had been referred by the Swedru Government Hospital for further medical attention at the UGMC.

His name: Haruna Rasheed Osman, the Nasara Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party, Agona West. Why the tears?

Apparently overwhelmed seeing Prof at his bedside as he reeled in pain; he had earlier been visited by Chris Arthur, the NPP Parliamentary candidate.

‘We are with you, you are not alone,’ I told him carefully, holding his right hand, the last two fingers wrapped in a blood
soaked bandage.

Rasheed was a victim in the bloody clash between two factions of Agona West NPP Sunday night, commonly coded as Cynthia Morrison versus Chris Arthur.

Gunshots had been fired by an unknown assailant within a convoy of party supporters advancing from a nearby village, he said.

Like a dream, he suddenly realised two of his fingers had been badly hit, almost mangled; and a hail of pellets lodged on the left side of his body frame. He sobbed uncontrollably, narrating the incident: ‘If I had died, I would have died for nothing’.

‘No Rasheed, don’t cry. Your party and Agonaman are solidly behind you, and your doctors say you will recover soon. A nurse came around, adjusted his drip, and asked a few questions common with
preparations for surgery.

Thereafter came a bigger medical team to be briefed by the doctor on duty.

Rasheed was virtually on his way to surgery.

Pray for Rasheed.

Agona West shooting incident: Cynthia Morrison ‘just wanted to show power’ – Chris Arthur [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/agona-west-shooting-incident-cynthia-morrison-just-wanted-to-show-power-chris-arthur-listen/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 19:09:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465402 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary hopeful in the Agona West Constituency, Chris Arthur, has expressed concern over the recent shooting incident during a mini-rally.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he accused incumbent MP Cynthia Morrison of using “radical elements” to instigate chaos.

“She just wanted to show power and has taken some radical guys to cause mayhem. She keeps accusing us, but while she talks nicely on the radio, she is evil. We won’t allow you to joke with our lives and jeopardize our safety,” he said.

Mr. Arthur revealed the fear instilled by the gunfire, stating, “If there is anything to be afraid of, it’s the gunshots. We are left wondering what might happen next. Why don’t you just accept defeat?” He further claimed that Madam Morrison’s motives are to “destroy votes just to let the NDC win.”

The incident, he said, occurred around 7 PM, leaving one person with gunshot wounds and several others with minor injuries.

“We heard gunshots, and the injured person had the bullets removed and is now doing well,” Mr. Arthur confirmed.

Reports indicate that supporters of Chris Arthur were returning to Agona Swedru from a campaign event in Otinkorang when they encountered supporters of Cynthia Morrison, who were holding a separate mini-rally.

In response to the violence, a representative from Mr      Arthur’s team called for police intervention, alleging that the altercation was provoked by an individual identified only as “Adolf.”

They expressed hope that a swift investigation would not only lead to the arrest of the shooter but also help prevent further violence as tensions rise ahead of the elections.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident to ensure justice is served and calm restored among residents and party supporters in the area.

However, Madam Morrison, on the same show, denied all allegations levelled against her by Chris Arthur.

She stated that his supporters had insulted her, adding, “I didn’t block any road. Who am I to block any road? My win in Agona West will shock everyone. I’ll certainly win as an independent candidate.”

None of my supporters fired gun at Agona West rally – Cynthia Morrison https://www.adomonline.com/none-of-my-supporters-fired-gun-at-agona-west-rally-cynthia-morrison/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 15:12:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465312 Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, has denied any involvement of her supporters in a gunfire incident that disrupted a campaign rally in Agona West on Sunday, October 28.

In an interview with Citi News, the Agona West MP said her supporters were not responsible for the gunfire, which left one person injured and caused widespread panic at the event.

The incident reportedly took place as supporters of Chris Arthur, a parliamentary aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were returning from a campaign launch in Otinkorang, a community within Agona West.

On their way, they encountered a group of madam Morrison’s supporters, who were holding a separate mini-rally at Agona Nyankrom.

As the two groups crossed paths, gunshots were fired, injuring Haruna Rashid, campaign manager for Chris Arthur, who sustained a gunshot wound to his ribs.

He was quickly taken to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital for treatment. Other individuals with minor injuries were also taken to the hospital amid the chaos.

Madam Morrison stated that she was unaware of the gunfire at the time, adding that she did not hear the shots and only learned of the incident later.

“At a point, the police told me that they put me in the car. So I just slipped through and then sat in and asked what was happening. They said it was a gunshot. I didn’t hear the gunshot actually because the [sound] system was closer to where I was standing.

“So I sat in the car, my driver, my security reversed, and then we were asked not to go through the same road that we came from.

“That was the directive of the police, so we had to go through the outskirts. Then I heard that some people had been injured, so they were sent to the polyclinic.”

“How can it be from my camp? I was having a rally. I got permission from the police. They gave us 27 policemen in their van and they directed me to exactly where I should be. Anywhere we turn, we see a policewoman, turn left, and they will ask us to turn left.

“We have to tell where they will ask us to turn. They had mapped everything for us to go. I did not even have the itinerary. They did the itinerary,” the MP further explained.

The Central Regional Police Command has since launched an investigation into the events, with madam Morrison expressing her hope that the authorities would resolve the matter quickly and ensure that it does not escalate further.

In light of rising tensions, residents and supporters in Agona West are calling for calm and are urging all parties to engage in peaceful campaigning as the election period approaches.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. while Rashid was traveling with the convoy of Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Christopher Arthur.

Three other individuals were also injured.

According to police sources, supporters of Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison, a rival candidate, encountered each other while campaigning in the same area.

Tensions reportedly escalated when Mr Arthur’s convoy encountered a roadblock allegedly set up by Madam Morrison’s supporters.

As the convoy attempted to turn away, shots were fired, and Rashid, who also serves as Mr Arthur’s campaign manager, was struck in the ribs.

Mr Arthur recounted the incident, explaining that as they neared the Nyarkrom Township, they encountered the blockage.

“We decided to change direction, but it was too late,” he said.

Mr Arthur described how unidentified individuals first poured alcohol on their driver, causing him to lose control before two men approached and shot Rashid.

Rashid was initially rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital and has since been transferred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Jibri Tanko, has condemned the violence, warning all supporters to avoid intimidation.

“We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he stated firmly.

In addition, two supporters from Cynthia Morrison’s camp were also injured by gunfire and are receiving treatment at the Agona Nyarkrom Health Center as investigations continue.

The incumbent Agona West Member of Parliament (MP) Cynthia Maamle Morrison and the NPP 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, Christopher Arthur engaged in a heated exchange.

This was on the back of a shooting incident in the constituency during a campaign rally in the build-up to the December 7 election.

The banter started when the NPP PC, who is a former aide to the incumbent MP accused the latter of orchestrating the attack on him and his people.

Mr Arthur claimed that Madam Morrison is still pained from her defeat in the NPP primary and has been inciting her supporters for violence.

However, the MP fought off the claims, stating she had no hand in it.

According to her, she did not even see for herself the people who have reportedly been injured.

But it is her prayer that they recover soon.

The NPP Nasara Coordinator, Haruna Rashid and three others sustained gunshot wounds after a gun was fired through a crowd.

Mr Arthur and his supporters were returning to Agona Swedru from a campaign launch in Otinkorang when they encountered Madam Morrison and her supporters at Agona Nyakrom, who were also campaigning.

The former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection said this on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem.

The comment of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) MP who is seeking to contest as an Independent Candidate in the 2024 election follows a shooting incident in her constituency.

It’s false; I am still running as an independent candidate – Cynthia Morrison [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/its-false-i-am-still-running-as-an-independent-candidate-cynthia-morrison-listen/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 08:32:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463355

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, has refuted media reports claiming she has withdrawn her decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming parliamentary election.

She clarified that, she remains firm in her decision to contest.

“I am still running as independent candidate in the parliamentary election for Agona West constituency. It’s a false rumour; I haven’t stepped down. I’m still running as an independent candidate ,” she said in an interview on Asempa FM on October 22.

Madam Cynthia Morrison is among four Members of Parliament, three of who are New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, whose seats have been declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin. The Speaker’s declaration follows the decision by the affected MPs to contest the December 7 election as Independent Candidates, contrary to the provisions of Article 97 (g)(h).

Earlier, there were media reports that claimed that after meetings with the leadership of the NPP in parliament, Madam Morrison had decided not to contest again.

Madam Morrison said “no such decision has been taken.”

Asked what she is doing about the declaration of her seat vacant, the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection said, “the issue is being handled by my lawyers.”

Agona West NPP supporters go wild on Cynthia Morrison [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/agona-west-npp-supporters-go-wild-on-cynthia-morrison-video/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 13:13:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461752 New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Agona West constituency in the Central region have gone berserk after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin declared the seat vacant.

The incumbent, Cynthia Morrison, was one of the four MPs whose seats were declared vacant on Thursday in parliament.

This follows the decision of the former Gender Minister to go independent in the 2024 election after losing the parliamentary primary to Christopher Arthur.

The constituents who were not happy with the ruling on Friday October 18, 2024 took to the streets clad in red and party apparel to express their displeasure.

The irate supporters have said they find it hard to believe Cynthia Morrison will pay them back this way having occupied the seat for eight years on the ticket of the NPP and also served as a Minister.

They expected that Madam Morrison would have at least consulted the chiefs and party members over her decision but that did not happen.

According to them, the MP has the NPP government which has now become the Minority caucus with 135 seats.

The Constituency Organizer, David Essandoh known as Sam Toyes in an interview with Adom News warned Cynthia Morrison not to ride on the achievements of the NPP in her campaign ahead of the December 7 election.

2024 election: Court injuncts Cynthia Morrison  https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-court-injuncts-cynthia-morrison/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 19:18:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2459732 The Agona Swedru District Court has injuncted Agona West Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison from holding herself as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2024 election.

The court has also restrained the Electoral Commission(EC) from proceeding with the nomination of Madam Morrison as an independent Candidate until the matter is fully determined.

This follows an application filed by Emmanuel Addison, Solomon Nyarko and Harrison A. Aglago who are all National Democratic Congress (NDC) Branch Executive in the Agona West Constituency.

Madam Morrison has served for eight years on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after first being elected in 2016.

However, the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection on April 12, 2024, lost the NPP parliamentary primary and has since decided to contest as an independent candidate.

She garnered 152 votes, while Christopher Arthur emerged victorious with 240 votes.

But the plaintiffs are arguing Cynthia Morrison is not a resident of Agona West but Agona East and therefore not eligible to contest the seat.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, she explained that, although she has no issues with Bawumia, her approach to campaigning will depend on the preferences of her supporters.

“I call Bawumia my boyfriend. I cannot blame Bawumia for what is happening to me. I have no issues with him. When I campaign, if people like me, I will campaign for myself, but if they support Bawumia, I will still campaign for Bawumia” she said.

Madam Morrison also clarified that if she has the opportunity, she will campaign both for herself and for Bawumia,

“Even during the campaign, if I am given the chance, I will campaign for myself and the flagbearer of the NPP, Bawumia. I am very frank—if people love Bawumia and make it known to me, I will campaign for him. But if they don’t like him, then I will campaign for myself.”

However, she stressed that she cannot blame Dr. Bawumia for the challenges she faces in her constituency, as she has no evidence to support such claims.

“There is no way I can blame the flagbearer for how party people treated me,” she said.

Madam Morrison’s decision to run independently follows her defeat in the NPP parliamentary primaries on April 13, where she received 152 votes compared to Chris Arthur’s 240 votes.

She attributed some of the hostility she is facing in her constituency to her support for Mr. Agyapong during the primaries.

“I never regret supporting Kennedy Agyapong, despite the backlash from my constituents” she said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

She mentioned that, “I didn’t even have a Bawumia t-shirt because, obviously, he supported Ken Agyapong. When I finally got one and hoisted his flags in my constituency, I faced attacks.”

Madam Morrison also noted that, despite Mr. Agyapong’s absence from the country during her campaign and the lack of support she received from him, local chiefs and constituents have urged her not to reconsider her decision.

“Even now, chiefs and people are calling on me not to rescind my decision,” she said.

Madam Morrison’s decision to run independently follows her defeat in the NPP parliamentary primaries on April 13, where she got 152 votes compared to Chris Arthur’s 240 votes.

She expressed optimism about her chances, stating, “I am confident that I will win as an independent candidate. I am also hopeful that I could win on the NPP ticket.”

Reflecting on her experiences within the party, she noted, “I have been privileged as an NPP member, having served as Gender Minister and benefiting from various opportunities, even abroad. When the President gave me a role, I thanked him and showed my gratitude. I am not bitter at all, even if my time was brief.”

When asked if she feels the national executives are against her, Madam Morrison responded, “Even General Secretary Justin Kodua came to launch a program in my constituency but never bothered to call or inquire about me. I am not pained by this.”

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Madam Morrison said, “If the party does not want me, I want myself, and the people around me want me.”

According to her, some elements in the party in the constituency instigated people to protest against her but she added that she maintains strong relationships with everyone, regardless of their political affiliation.

“I know many from the NDC who support me. Even NDC members have hugged me and asked for food. I relate with all of them. Some NDC people call me,” she said.

Reflecting on her treatment, she stated that others disrespected and attacked her miserably during the election.

“A PC whom I fed and supported with money for his children’s education attacked me publicly, and national executives did nothing about it. They even used police personnel to intimidate me,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Madam Morrison stressed the positive interactions she has had.

“Even when I was submitting my forms, those who saw me hugged me and took pictures with me, including NDC members. I am an MP for Agona West, not just for the NPP, and everyone, even from the NDC, loves me. I am a mother to my constituents.”

Madam Morrison’s decision to run independently comes after her defeat in the NPP parliamentary primaries on April 13, where she secured 152 votes against Chris Arthur’s 240 votes.

He urged her and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) members who have gone independent to reconsider their decisions, stressing the importance of party unity.

“The party is bigger than any individual, and that is the essence of democracy. If things didn’t go well, we are human, but we must all think about the party and its future” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday.

Addressing constituents, Morrison stated that, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”

Despite her loss in the primaries, Madam Morrison reaffirmed her dedication to the progress of Agona West and called on her supporters to back her independent bid.

However, Mr. Agyapong reminded those who might be disappointed with the outcome of any election that they are all serving the same party and should prioritize its future over personal ambitions.

He noted that, the NPP is a good party that brings benefits to Ghanaians, and those who feel slighted by the election should accept the outcome and continue to serve the party and the nation.

“If you lose an election, it is painful, but the party is bigger than any of us, even former President Kufuor and President Akufo-Addo,” Mr. Agyepong said.

Mr. Agyepong, who previously served as the General Secretary of the NPP, also called for leadership to be proactive.

“We have to create leadership by example. An extended stay in the party allows us to continue serving the party and the nation effectively.”

Sadness as rumours of Cynthia Morrison’s exit hit Gender Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/sadness-as-rumours-of-cynthia-morrisons-exit-hit-gender-ministry/ Wed, 20 Jan 2021 12:09:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1908021 Staff at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection as well as agencies under the Ministry are wearing sad mood as they go about their duties with anxiety over rumours that Hon. Cynthia Morrison might not return to the Ministry as the sector minister.

Sources at the ministry indicate that almost every staff is not happy over the rumours circulating on social media suggesting their “beloved mother” is going to be replaced by Adwoa Sarfo.

Some staff who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity stated that “Hon. Cynthia Morrison has done very well to keep the ministry. She has turned the ministry positively and everybody likes her. So we are very sad about what we are hearing.”

“This Ministry is one of the difficult ones, especially the handling of the caterers payment at the School Feeding. It is not an easy task to handle our women and she has managed to keep things calm. In fact, her personality fits into every department of this ministry. She is bold and tough over certain issues and at the same time she is very respectful and diplomatic over certain things. So we need such a person to manage here,” a worker intimated.

Checks at the presidency indicate that the MP for Dome Kwabenya, Adjoa Sarfo has been lobbying for the same position.

It is however unclear who would be given the opportunity to serve as the Gender Minister. Hon. Cynthia Morrison replaced the then former National Women’s Organizer of the party, Otiko Afisah Dzaba in September 2018.

She has served for about two and half years .

Gender Ministry supports 75,000 ‘Covid-affected daily wage earners’ https://www.adomonline.com/gender-ministry-supports-75000-covid-affected-daily-wage-earners/ Sat, 10 Oct 2020 18:03:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1865512 The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has announced that vulnerable persons, numbering 75,000 within Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, would receive financial support to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on their livelihoods.

According to her, since the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic, government’s measures in March to April were critical in the immediate containment and mitigation of the virus’ impact, however, the economic effects continue to negatively affect a significant number of persons, especially the vulnerable poor.

The Gender Minister stated that, the “World Food Programme will provide funds to be transferred to benefit up to 75,000 vulnerable people in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, which have been deemed to be hardest hit by the COVID-19 infections, for up to a four-month period.”

She was delighted that the Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR), under the Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministry, emergency data collection has brought about data that is of use to the World Food Programme (WFP) in reaching out to Covid-affected daily wage earners.

She made the announcement on Thursday, October 8,2020 during the launch of “Cash Transfer to Covid-affected Daily Wage Earners” who were profiled during the emergency data collection by the GNHR.

MORE:

While applauding the WFP team for signing an agreement with her ministry to reach out to about 75,000 persons, the Gender Minister called on well-meaning groups and individuals to help her ‘touch’ more lives.

Mrs. Cynthia Mamle Morrison said the beneficiaries, consisting of 60% females and 40% males, would receive their funds via MTN mobile money transfers using the LEAP module.

Some of the beneficiaries received cash on their mobile phones during the launch

She further advised the recipients to utilize the opportunity to better their lives and their families.

Additionally, she noted that President Akufo-Addo, based on his conviction that every life deserves some amount of dignity, is working hard on creating an equal society where the poor and vulnerable can live decent lives.

“The GNHR would in the coming months profile priority areas such as the disabled, street children, alleged witches and the kayayei across some hot spot zones in the country for government to extend support to these categorized vulnerable groups”, the minister said.

Dr. Prosper Laari, National Coordinator, Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR), pointed out that risk assessment was an integral part of the lockdown process when Covid-19 was peaking up.

“Therefore, the Government considered the health and socio-economic implications of the lockdown involving millions of Ghanaians living in poverty, whose condition would grow worse and would be exposed to food insecurity, difficulty in accessing basic healthcare services, and other hazards.

“Consequently, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), put into immediate effect an emergency social protection system to safeguard the poor and vulnerable during this period.”

He said data collected at the lockdown areas showed that over 60% were vulnerable individuals who sleep in kiosks, containers, markets, uncompleted structures, on the streets, bus or lorry stations, chop bars or drinking spots, at the beaches, and are exposed to different forms of hazards.

“Analysis on the sources of livelihood of the total of Forty-Six Thousand and Sixty (46, 060) vulnerable individuals showed that 35% had no sources of livelihood. These were due to reasons such as; old age (1,080), temporary layoff (856), disability (103) or sickness (450).”
