A 32-year -old notorious criminal and two others have been arrested for stealing 15 goats and sheep at Anomaa-Wobi in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.

Police sources indicate the 32-year-old suspect, identified as Edward Agyire, had been jailed about six times for various criminal activities.

Mr Agyire is said to be in critical condition after he sustained gunshot wounds in his ribs during a highway robbery on the Swedru road last week.

This was after a police patrol team stormed the scene upon a tipoff amid sporadic shooting, foiling the operation.

However, he resorted to herbs and bandaged his waist area for his next operation on Thursday morning.

The suspects were arrested by the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Patrol team after they transferred the animals into a different car to sell.

Bosnian Croat war criminal dies after taking poison in court https://www.adomonline.com/bosnian-croat-war-criminal-dies-taking-poison-court/ Thu, 30 Nov 2017 09:10:34 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=719641 A Bosnian Croat war criminal has died after drinking poison during an appeal hearing in The Hague.
Slobodan Praljak, 72, died in hospital, with the UN court announcing that the courtroom was now “a crime scene”.
On hearing that his 20-year jail term had been upheld, the ex-commander of Bosnian Croat forces said he was not a criminal and then drank from a bottle.
In 2013, he was sentenced for crimes in the city of Mostar during the Bosnian war from 1992-95.
Praljak was one of six former Bosnian Croat political and military leaders up before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
They were attending the final appeals judgment to be handed down by the court.
Though allies against the Bosnian Serbs in the war, Bosnian Croats and Muslims also fought each other for a period of 11 months, with Mostar seeing some of the fiercest fighting.

‘Don’t take away the glass’

After hearing the verdict, General Praljak stood and raised his hand to his mouth, tipped his head back and appeared to swallow a glass of liquid.
“I have taken poison,” he said.
Presiding judge Carmel Agius immediately suspended the proceedings and an ambulance was called.
“Okay,” the judge said. “We suspend the… We suspend… Please, the curtains. Don’t take away the glass that he used when he drank something.”

An ambulance could later be seen arriving outside the tribunal while a helicopter hovered above the scene.
Several emergency rescue workers also rushed into the building carrying equipment in backpacks.
In a statement, the ICTY said Praljak “was immediately assisted by the ICTY medical staff”.
It said Praljak “was transported to a nearby hospital to receive further medical assistance where he passed”.
An independent investigation is now under way.

Meanwhile, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he regretted the death of Slobodan Praljak.
“His act, which we all unfortunately witnessed today, speaks most of a deep moral injustice towards six indicted Croats from Bosnia and the Croatian people.
“The government expresses its condolences to all victims of all crimes committed in the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We voice dissatisfaction and regret about the verdict,” Mr Plenkovic said.

Natacha Gaveau Ivanovic, Praljak’s lawyer, told the BBC that she did not believe the tribunal treated her client fairly.
“I have no idea what happened and how it happened but for me what is very important, more important is why he did it,” she said.
The lawyer said she thought her client drank poison because he believed that he was an “innocent man”. She said that he had the right to “consider that” because the tribunal “didn’t limit itself to judge just personal responsibility, they took on them to judge [the] politics of people, of a state, the history”.
She added: “It’s very hard from the people who are from this country to accept that, and actually they cannot accept it.”

Crimes against Muslims

Praljak, the former commander of the main staff of the Bosnian Croat defence forces (HVO), was jailed for crimes against humanity.
Informed that soldiers were rounding up Muslims in Prozor in the summer of 1993, he had failed to make any serious efforts to stop the action, the UN war crimes tribunal found.
Praljak had also failed to act on information that murders were being planned, as well as attacks on members of international organisations and the destruction of the city’s historic Old Bridge and mosques.

Those appearing with him included Jadranko Prlic, the former prime minister of the Bosnian Croats’ breakaway statelet.
Set up by mandate of the UN Security Council in 1993, the ICTY is due to close when its mandate expires at the end of the year.

Lack of free Wi-Fi at airports criminal – Ursula Owusu https://www.adomonline.com/lack-free-wi-fi-airports-criminal-ursula-owusu/ Sat, 29 Jul 2017 10:40:51 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=342331 Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has said the absence of free internet services at the various airports in the country is an illegality.
According to her, per best practices, these entry points into the country and several others should provide free internet for the people.
Speaking to journalists after a forum organised by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) in Accra on Friday, 28 July 2017, she said: “I think it is criminal that we don’t have free Wi Fi in our airports and other ports of entry, it is criminal.”
She continued: “In selected public spaces in Accra, we should be able to have free Wi-Fi and in the restaurants and drinking spots as well. You travel outside and it is one of the services they offer. It differentiate them from other establishments so you may think you are spending on free Wi-Fi for your clients but you are attracting more clientele who will come there and browse and buy the products that you are selling. So for me it also makes business sense.”

Hot Audio: Aisha Huang was also a ‘criminal’ – Yamin asserts https://www.adomonline.com/hot-audio-aisha-huang-also-criminal-yamin-asserts/ Tue, 23 May 2017 14:56:50 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=132801 Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, under the NDC government, Joseph Yamin, says Aisha Huang, the popular 31–year-old Chinese galamsey guru’s dealings go beyond what she has been arrested for.

Aisha Huang, believed to be deeply engaged in illegal mining in Ghana, was arrested earlier in May by the Ghana Immigration Service over her alleged involvement in illegal mining in an area belonging to the Volta Resources Company Limited.

It was reported that she is very influential and wields a lot of power due to the backing she receives from some high-profile state officers, including top security personnel.

But Joseph Yamin who is also a former Deputy Sports Minister and head of the anti-Galamsey committee for the Ashanti region said Aisha’s criminal activities can’t be equated to anything apart from armed robbery.

He added that, his intelligence was very close to arresting Aisha when his party was in power hence he worked with the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) and the Military on her case but failed to arrest her due to political influence.

“Aisha’s activities go beyond Galamsey. It goes into robbery. You can’t equate it to anything apart from robbery. I worked with the BNI, military, and the police on her case. I have never seen her before but she’s more popular in the Ashanti region…” he said.

He further stressed that, if he had only a month as the deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, he would have locked Aisha behind bars because he had already deported fourteen Chinese  ‘Galamseyers’ back to their country.

“If I were in Ashanti region for one more month, I would have arrested Aisha. I was very close to arresting her. Eight months in Ashanti region I deported fourteen Chinese Galamseyers…” he stated.

‘You have case to answer’, Marwako manager ordered to open defence https://www.adomonline.com/case-answer-marwako-manager-ordered-open-defence/ Wed, 26 Apr 2017 19:09:07 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=95581

An Abeka District Court has declined a submission of no case made by lawyers for Abelempke Marwako branch manager Jihad Chabaan, who is facing charges of assault for thrusting the face of Caterer Evelyn Boakye into blended pepper.

Lead Counsel Julio De Medeiros told the court on Wednesday that the prosecution had failed to substantiate any of the charges put against him.

Lawyer De Medeiros relying on the Criminal Offences Act, Section 207 said offensive conduct could only take place in a public place. He described the Marwako restaurant’s Kitchen where the act is said to have taken place as a private facility.

He explained such a place was not accessible to all and could not be termed a public place.

He insisted even if the court decided to perceive it as such, the word “sharamunta” which the accused was said to have uttered which amounted to offensive conduct was not explained to the court. He said it could be misleading for the court to rely on the prosecution which failed to bring in an expert, and hold the word means prostitute.

On the count of Assault, Lawyer De Medeiros intimated that intent of causing harm was key for such a determination to be made. Quoting from the court’s records of the Cross examination of Police investigator Eunice Ashiagbor, Mr. De Medeiros pointed out the admission that the act was accidental.

He averred “why is the court being invited to determine assault when the person paid with our taxes to investigate crime says it was accidental”.

He pleaded with the court to apply his arguments in respect of the count of assault for that of causing harm. He prayed the court to grant their request as Jihad Chabaan had no case to answer for.

Prosecution

Chief Inspector Hanson Armah opposed the application. He told the court it was impossible for anyone to detach the restaurant’s kitchen from the restaurant. He added it was a commercial venture and open to the public.

On the dispute over the meaning of the expression “sharamunta”, the prosecutor said the lawyers for the accused had the leeway to prove to the court it didn’t mean prostitute yet they failed to do so.

He said Jihad rushed into the kitchen angry when he heard the humming of the blender and violently held the lady’s neck, thrusting it into the pepper “how could such a person be said not to have an intention of harm”, he quizzed.

He reminded the court of the testimony by the medical doctor that confirmed harm was done to the lady. He quoted from the court records used by Mr. De Medeiros saying he deliberately didn’t make reference to the subsequent question the investigator was asked.

“My lady, the first question of whether at any point she discovered it was accidental, was a speculative question, which the investigator answered “yes”. When the investigator was asked if she thinks there was no intent to cause harm she disagreed and reiterated our position. That was a legal question which the lawyer didn’t bother to refer to today”, he stated.

Human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu then asked the court that he is allowed to speak. He had for the past hearings been watching criminal brief for Caterer Evelyn Boakye. He read section 11 of the criminal and other offences act and argued that causing harm or contributing to causing harm was indeed harm.

Magistrate Victoria Ghansah said even in instances where insufficient evidence had been adduced, the law allowed the court to order the accused to open defence when some form of confession has been made. She referred to the statement taken from Jihad by the police where the incident (splash of pepper) was admitted to have taken place with the expression “sharamunta” whose meaning they were now disputing.

She, therefore, declined the request ordering that Jihad Opens his defence at the next adjourned date.

The hearing continues on Wednesday, May 3.
