Police arrest one more suspect in the killing of 26-year-old footballer in Tamale https://www.adomonline.com/police-arrest-one-more-suspect-in-the-killing-of-26-year-old-footballer-in-tamale/ Sun, 25 May 2025 15:26:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538311 The police in the Northern Region have apprehended another suspect in the case involving the killing of 26-year-old footballer Yakubu Mohammed Habib.

The suspect, Abdul Majeed, and his accomplice, Abdul Majeed Saeed, were declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service in March 2025 after they went into hiding.

The killing occurred between February 25 and 26, 2025, in Fou, a suburb of the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region.

A dispute between Yakubu’s brother, Mustapha Muktadel, and a neighbour, Baba Habib, sparked the incident.

According to community members, Baba Habib and his friends assaulted Mustapha Muktadel on February 25 at around 9:00 p.m.

Later that night, Baba Habib called Yakubu’s brother, asking to meet him, but he declined.

At around 12:30 a.m. on February 26, Baba Habib returned with a group of about 20 people, leading to a confrontation.

During the altercation, one of the individuals retrieved a pump-action gun from a Mitsubishi Pajero and began firing, hitting Yakubu Mohammed Habib.

The victim was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) but died from his injuries at around 4:30 a.m. The police have now arrested multiple suspects in connection with the incident.

The family of the late Yakubu Mohammed Habib had been conducting surveillance at the residence of suspect Abdul Majeed Saeed for three months, hoping to apprehend him.

On the day of the arrest, their efforts paid off when Abdul Majeed was spotted at the house.

According to Yakubu’s brother, Yakubu Ibrahim, they informed the police as soon as they confirmed Abdul Majeed’s presence.

He said that when the police arrived, Abdul Majeed attempted to escape through the back door but was spotted. The police searched the premises, ransacking the place, but couldn’t find him initially.

Yakubu Ibrahim explained that the police found signs of recent occupation, including a shirt hanging, a phone on charge, and leftover drinks.

However, Abdul Majeed was nowhere to be found—until he was spotted hiding in the ceiling.

“The police searched all the rooms but couldn’t find him until he moved into the ceiling,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim added that Abdul Majeed allegedly had several “juju” items in the room and was holding a small red object, seemingly under the impression that he was invisible. When asked to get down, he lay still, thinking he couldn’t be seen.

“However, we eventually pushed him, and he fell to the ground, where he was arrested,” he explained.

Abdul Majeed sustained some injuries during the arrest and is currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he is handcuffed.

One of the family members also sustained injuries during the arrest.

“I saw him at the TTH. They have handcuffed him. One of our colleagues also sustained injuries,” Mr Ibrahim said.

Bawku conflict now driven by organised crime – Prof. Aning https://www.adomonline.com/bawku-conflict-now-driven-by-organised-crime-prof-aning/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 10:47:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524948 Security consultant Prof. Kwesi Aning has stressed that the ongoing conflict in Bawku has evolved from ethnic tensions and chieftaincy disputes into a much more complex issue, now primarily driven by organised crime and a transnational network.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Prof. Aning explained that while the violence initially stemmed from ethnic and leadership struggles, it has now become largely fueled by criminal groups exploiting these divisions. He pointed out that the situation is far more complicated than most people understand.

“The presupposition and the common perception are that what is happening in Bawku is essentially a conflict between two groups of people. My agreement, however, is that it has transcended these two groups. It has also moved beyond chieftaincy issues,” he stated.

Prof. Aning emphasised that the primary force behind the violence is not ethnic or chieftaincy disputes, but organised crime networks that have capitalised on these tensions. “What we are witnessing in Bawku today is being driven more by criminality and a transnational network. These criminal groups use the notions of ethnicity, ethnic identity, and long-standing suspicions surrounding chieftaincy to further their agendas,” he added.

While he refrained from revealing sensitive details about the criminal groups involved, he underscored the growing complexity of the conflict. “But I cannot delve too much into this, as I hold a public office, and such matters are sensitive,” he explained. Nonetheless, his comments highlighted the significant role that criminal networks are playing in perpetuating the violence in Bawku.

Prof. Aning also criticised the widespread narrative that the conflict is merely about ethnicity or chieftaincy. He warned that this oversimplified view only exacerbates the situation.

“The argument that it is simply an ethnic or chieftaincy issue is false. It does not help the situation at all. In fact, it may even worsen tensions, which are already at a breaking point,” he cautioned.

Furthermore, Prof. Aning pointed to the government’s failure to effectively address the crisis, blaming a lack of resources and strategic planning. He described the situation as precarious, warning that it is on the brink of escalating into an even more destructive conflict.

“I can assure you that the situation is delicate, on the verge of becoming a scorched-earth policy. We do not have the necessary resources or the strong foundation to resolve this effectively. There is a need for more strategic focus, and without that, the crisis will only deepen,” he said.

In a somber assessment of the government’s capabilities, Prof. Aning concluded, “That I can tell you, and we cannot calm the conflict. We don’t have the resources, we don’t have the backbone.”

Banker remanded for dishonestly appropriating customer’s cash https://www.adomonline.com/banker-remanded-for-dishonestly-appropriating-customers-cash/ Sat, 23 Dec 2023 21:38:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2336197  The Tarkwa Circuit Court has remanded a front desk officer of Access bank, Tarkwa branch, for dishonestly appropriating a cash sum of GH¢9,190.57 belonging to a customer of the bank.

Edmond Nashiru, 30, in his statement to the police, said he needed money to organise a church programme, hence he resorted to the criminal act to raise funds.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and his lawyer, Bright Baiden, prayed the court, presided over by Mrs Hathie Ama Manu, to grant his client bail but that was declined, and the case adjourned to December 28, 2023.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Joseph Lartey, said the complaint was made by the management of Access Bank, Tarkwa branch, and Nashiru was the first point of call for customers who visited the bank with issues to be addressed.

He said on November 22, 2023, management of the bank reported to the police that, Daniel Atigah, a witness and customer, lodged a complainant that a total amount of GH¢9,190.57 had been withdrawn from his account.

According to prosecution, management quickly activated an audit management team to investigate the issue and report their findings.

The team’s report indicated that Nashiru was responsible for the withdrawal so a formal complaint was lodged with the police and he was arrested to assist in investigations.

The prosecutor said on July 3, 2023, while Nashiru was on duty, Atigah went to the banking hall and complained of an error with his Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card, and he directed him to fill a form requesting for a new card without his knowledge.

The problem persisted and Atigah went back to the bank for it to be rectified but Nashiru was not on duty and a different staff issued another ATM card to him, the prosecutor said.

He said Nashiru took custody of the other ATM card, which he intentionally assisted Atigah to apply for and was using it to make withdrawals from his account.

This was after the Court presided over by Christina Cann, found Amadu Moro guilty on the charge of defilement.

Handing the sentence, the Court said it found the accused guilty, following the perusal of the evidence on record, careful consideration of the charge, exhibits and the applicable law.

According to the Court, it also considered the intrinsic seriousness of the offence, degree of revulsion and premeditation.

The facts of the prosecution led by Inspector Opoku Aniagyei are that the complainant is a housewife, and the victim is the complainant’s niece.

During the month of October 2021, one night, the complainant woke up to urinate and to her surprise, she saw the accused having sexual intercourse with the victim.

The prosecution said the complainant later reported the matter to the Police at Nima and a medical form was issued to the complainant to seek medical treatment for the victim.

The prosecutor said the accused was nabbed by the Police, but he denied the offence in his caution statement.

When the Police medical report was received it indicated that the victim had been defiled.

The service says it also remains committed in its efforts to fight crime in Ghana.

This is on the back of concerns raised by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) following the murder of a private legal practitioner, Richard Badombia.

Mr Badombia was shot and killed in a robbery attack on Bole-Bamboi Highway in the Savannah Region.

GBA says it has noted with grave concern the upsurge in armed robbery attacks and other violent crimes in the country.

The association has, therefore, among other things called on security services to enhance general public education on crime prevention and detection with a view to awakening the security consciousness of the citizenry.

But a statement, signed by the Director of Public Affairs, DCOP Kwesi Ofori, said they fight crime every day and treated all with the same urgency and professional attitude and regrets every loss of life.

Crime figures have dropped significantly in the last year – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/crime-figures-have-dropped-significantly-in-the-last-year-interior-minister/ Thu, 15 Oct 2020 15:57:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1867067 Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has dismissed claims of insecurity in the country.

His comments are in response to increasing concerns about public safety, with regards to Tuesday’s announcement in Parliament that the government is set to deploy over 200 Police officers to serve as bodyguards to Members of Parliament (MPs).

Addressing the media on Wednesday, the Interior Minister explained that this year’s crime figures have seen a significant drop due to increased security presence, as compared to last year.

“We have an improved system, though the streets were generally being protected. For instance, when we work the impact of our ‘Operation Calm Life’ on September 20, findings are that there is a drop in criminal cases because of increased deployment.

“By August, places like Accra had seen a reduction of armed robberies by 53%, whereas the country had generally recorded a minimum of 10%,” he said.

Meanwhile, Security Analyst, Colonel Festus Aboagye (retired), has said government’s decision to provide personal security for MPs will come at a cost to public safety.

He said the move will deny other state security offices of personnel.

Mr Tamakloe gave the explanation when he addressed the media at the premises of the CID shortly after the CID had informed them of the cancelation.

He said he, together with his client, got to the premises of the CID at exactly 10:30 am only to be told that the meeting had been rescheduled for tomorrow at 11am for some “unforeseen reasons”.

“They (CID) went for a meeting shortly after we got here, and after the meeting we were told the meeting cannot come off and has been rescheduled to tomorrow so we have agreed to meet them tomorrow,” he told the media.

Samuel Owusu, according to the police is a prime suspect in a fraud syndicate and was reported to have collected moneys from businessmen, lawyers and medical doctors.

Owusu and accomplices called their victims on their mobile phones and told them that he wanted to introduce them to business in the oil gas industry, but later duped them.

The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gustav Yankson, disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times in Accra.

He said Owusu told his victims that a gas company was in urgent need of oil cement for work, and asked them to pay money to him through mobile money.

ACP Yankson said the victims sent money ranging between GH¢2000 and GH¢7000 to the suspects through mobile money.

He said later when the victims tried to get in touch with the suspects their phones were switched off.

ACP Yankson said reports were made to the unit by the victims and the suspect was arrested at Weija.

He said investigations had revealed that all calls from the victims were traced to the suspect.

Five Chinese arrested for selling indomie https://www.adomonline.com/five-chinese-arrested-for-selling-indomie/ Fri, 20 Dec 2019 06:26:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1734462 The Kaneshie District Court on Monday turned down a bail application of five Chinese nationals including a woman, who are being held for engaging in illegal employment and residing in the country without permit.

Some of the Chinese were found to selling indomie. The court presided over by Eleanor Kakra Barnes-Botchwey noted that defence counsel had failed to disclose to the court their permanent place of abode.

The court noted that the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) was investigating how they were residing in the country illegally and when granted bail, they might go into hiding.

It held that although the accused persons were entitled to bail under the law but stated that, the grant of bail was under the discretion of the court.

According to the court the charges levelled against accused persons in Takoradi was entirely different from the one in Accra.

In Takoradi they are being held over the charge of conspiracy and threat of harm.

A Circuit Court in Takoradi admitted them to bail after asking them to make a security deposit of GHC 10,000 each and further ordered to deposit their passports with the court.

It further directed the GIS to ensure that they go Takoradi to stand trial.

The court further ordered the GIS to secure an Interpreter and adjourned the matter to December 30.

The five accused persons are: Dehang Li, Haifang Zhou, Jiauong Huan, Li Hui Lauo and Jung Gang Quin. They were arrested on December 4, this year on suspicion that they did not have residence permit and were also engaged in illegal employment.

Soon after their arrest, the GIS arraigned them.

Opposing vehemently to a bail application, the GIS said it found it intriguing that a Chinese national would travel to Ghana and engage in the business of selling Indome at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region.

Chief Superintendent of Immigration Peter Philip Andoh prayed the Court not to grant bail to the five Chinese nationals. Chief Supt. Andoh said it was not possible that the accused persons would come to Ghana to prepare and sell Indomie, a vocation reserved for Ghanaians.

Referring to defence counsel assertion that individuals within the country were to enjoy their fundamental human rights, Chief Supt Andoh noted those rights was not absolute.

He recounted the one of the accused for example had been in the country since 2016 wwithout permit adding that the accused person cannot enjoy that illegality. Applying for bail, Dr. J.E.K Abaka, prayed the court to admit the accused persons to bail pending trial.

Dr Abaka noted that his clients would not abscond since their passports were in the custody of the Regional Commander in the Western Region.

He was not enthused over the fact that his clients were arrested on December 3, this year and put before a Takoradi Circuit court over conspiracy and threat of harm.

According to defence counsel as soon as the Circuit Court in Takoradi had granted them bail, they were arrested the following day and sent to Accra.

There was confusion when the GIS officials decided to escort them back to the custody.

Accused persons wanted to speak to their counsel but the GIS officials declined.

It took the intervention of Chief Supt Andoh before the GIS officials could escort them.

The incident was suspected to have happened Monday night.

Workers reported to work Tuesday morning to find three offices within the administration block broken into and the safe removed from a wall in the accountant’s office and taken away together with a revenue bag.

The thieves also stole a phone from the acting director’s office, and a laptop as well as a phone from the registrar’s office, our correspondent Kwame Kakraba reported.

“Our offices were broken into. The accountant office was broken into and an entire safe was carried out of the office overnight,” acting director of the hospital, Dr Kwadwo Obeng told our correspondent Wednesday.

He expressed concern about insufficient security at the facility which he said has been confronted with land encroachment.

The hospital, he said, has only six security officers who run a shift system, noting at every particular time, there are only three of them on duty. That, he said, is inadequate considering the size of the hospital.

“Fortunately, no client or staff was injure in this incident but I think it highlight the problem of lack of security of this facility. This time they didn’t meet anybody; this time they just wanted to collect items but what if their intentions are more dangerous next time?” he stated.

Dr Obeng observed that encroachers on their land have created illegal exits at the facility exposing them to security risks.

He said just behind one of their male wards, the lands have been sold to people who now demarcating the area for development.

He has advised those who have bought lands area “o advise themselves against further developing of this land” to avoid losing their investment in the long run.

Meanwhile, Dr Obeng has appealed to government to take urgent steps to safeguard the security of the staff and patients of the hospital.

Two commit suicide after misunderstanding with lovers https://www.adomonline.com/two-commit-suicide-after-misunderstanding-with-lovers/ Wed, 23 Oct 2019 06:33:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1714866 Two persons, a man and a lady, have committed suicide by hanging to end matters following misunderstandings with their respective lovers on Thursday and Saturday at Agbagblakope and Agblekpui, suburbs of Aflao, in the Ketu South Municipality.

The man, Julius Sewor, aged 25, was found hanging after his wife quarreled with him for not taking care of her and their baby.

The body of Bertha Aba, 19, was discovered by some children just hours after she informed her suspected boyfriend in a telephone conversation that she was carrying a pregnancy for him.

Mr Eric Vondee, Aflao District Police Crime Officer, told the Ghana News Agency, his outfit had the first report at about 0545 hours on Thursday November 17, this year, that the body of an adult male, identified as Julius Sewor, has been found hanging on a tree at Agbagblakope.

He said a police team was immediately dispatched and subsequently found the body hanging by a nylon rope on a tree, with the tongue protruded, near a fence wall with no house inside. The police brought it down after preliminary investigations.

Mr Vondee said the deceased, a Benin national, was living at Aflao with his Ghanaian wife with whom he had a baby boy, aged one and a half months old.

He said on Wednesday November 16, this year, while Sewor was working at a Bakery, where he was employed, his wife in a rage, dashed to damp the baby on him, accusing him of not taking care of them.

Mr Vondee said though his employer intervened and his wife agreed to take back the baby, the deceased, refused to hand over the baby, but rather packed his belongings and left the work place with the baby.

The employer sent someone to follow up to the couple’s home so that the deceased would not assault his wife, but both were not met in the house.

Mr Vondee said investigations revealed that the deceased on the same day visited Lome in Togo, and narrating his wife’s conduct to one Frederick Agunor, confiding in him he would commit suicide to end it all.

His friend strongly discouraged him from it and he left, only for his body to be found hanging at Agbagblakope near the E.P Basic School on the Diamond Cement Factory road, early the following morning.

Meanwhile the baby and mother were re-united before the incident occurred.

In the second case, Mr. Vondee said relatives of the lady, who lived in the same house with her at Agblekpui, reported of her hanging herself at about 1230 hours on Saturday November 19, this year.

He said according to the relatives, they over heard the lady, at about 1100 hours same day in a telephone conversation with the suspected boyfriend, telling him she was pregnant for him.

According to the relatives, after dropping the phone, the deceased picked a rope as if to draw water from the well, at which juncture they left for a funeral in Aflao, where they were informed hours later that her body was found hanging about 500 meters from their house.

Mr Vondee said the relatives rushed and brought down the body with the intent of rushing her to the hospital but realised it was too late.

Mr Vondee said police do not suspect any foul play in both cases, as there were only rope marks around their necks, adding, the two bodies were being kept in the Ketu South Municipal Hospital morgue at Aflao pending further investigations.

The video has the two police police officers who are said to be stationed at the Railway Station, near the Agatha Market in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, using used bicycle tyres to assault the suspect who they accuse of stealing GH¢1,600 from his employer, a claim the suspect had partly denied.

As they brutalized the suspect who has only been identified as Dodzi, he confessed to taking GH¢350 from his boss’ private car and not the GH¢1,600 he was being accused of stealing.

In spite of the denial, the police personnel who are of junior ranks, still thought they could extract a confession from the suspect hence continued to beat him with the used tyres.

As they beat the suspect who had been handcuffed at the back and defenceless, he wept uncontrollably but that did not stop the officers from exacting their ordeal on him.

At a point, another police officer, identified only as a Sergeant, who was in mufti, joined the torture gang to beat up the suspect.

According to the suspect’s father, Mr Alegbe Daniel, the police after assaulting his son, detained him from Friday to Tuesday, before granting him bail without any medications.

Fashion designer arrested for defiling 15-year-old https://www.adomonline.com/fashion-designer-arrested-for-defiling-15-year-old/ Thu, 26 Sep 2019 06:09:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1707544 A fashion designer has been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl in a shop at La, in Accra.

Joseph Opata, 23, is said to have sexually abused the victim when she sent her school uniform, which was too long for him to fix to the right length.

Opata has, however, denied the offence of defilement.

The Court, presided over by Mrs Rita Abrokwah-Doko, admitted Opata to bail in the sum of GH¢10,000.00 with three sureties to reappear on October 22.

Prosecuting, Detective Sergeant Opoku Aniagyei said in his narrative that the mother of the victim, who was a junior high school student, reported the case to the Police.

The prosecutor said Opata worked at the shop of the complaint’s cousin as a designer, with the shop located on the same compound as the residence of the complainant.

The victim, who lived with her father at a different location, often visited her mother where she became acquainted with Opata.

The prosecutor said the victim’s mother, however, protested whenever Opata engaged her daughter in a conversation under the pretext of sending her.

When the trend persisted for about a year, she warned Opata against relating with her daughter at any level.

However, in July this year, when the victim’s mother sent her to a seamstress to fix her uniform, she rather took it to Opata, who took advantage of the situation and defiled her.

Opata was, subsequently, arrested.

Security camera captures image of Ashaiman murderer https://www.adomonline.com/security-camera-captures-image-of-ashaiman-murderer/ Thu, 19 Sep 2019 05:53:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1705497 A secret security camera has captured the image of the person who killed two watchmen at Apsonic Motors and Kasapreko, opposite the Ashaiman Senior High School at Ashaiman near Tema, on Saturday night, The Chronicle can report.

The image captured by the camera is also believed to be that of the same person who murdered one Joshua, a coconut seller by the Tema-Akosombo road.

A reliable security source who spoke to The Chronicle said the murderer applied the same modus operandi using concrete blocks to hit the back of the heads of the victims. After the killing, the murderer surgically extracted their eyes and tongues.

The Chronicle’s independent investigation reveals that on that fateful night, the dual carriageway in the area where the crime was committed was temporarily blocked by unknown persons, making it impossible for vehicles to ply.

Following the horrifying incident, the police, in the early hours of Monday September, 16 2019, assisted by armed personnel drawn from the Eastern Naval Command and First Battalion of Infantry descended on suspected criminal hideouts in the Tema Metropolis and Ashaiman Municipality.

The exercise was carried at Tema New Town, Community 5000 in the defunct Meridian Hotel enclave, and Tulaku near where Joshua, the coconut seller was killed.

Meanwhile, the police at Afienya have arrested a notorious criminal, Francis Nutufe Kwaku Azumah, 34, a mason, alleged to have led some daring armed robbery escapades in the jurisdiction.

The Afienya District Police Commander, Superintendent Asiamah Agyei, who confirmed the arrest to The Chronicle, stated that an accomplice in these robberies, only known as Kobby, is at large and has, therefore, been declared wanted.

According to Superintendent Agyei, the suspect and his gang had been terrorising residents of Newland, Mataheko and Jerusalem, among other areas with impunity. He mentioned that some months ago, the criminal group attacked the home of a businesswoman in Newland, and at gunpoint robbed her of cash and other valuables.

ALSO: Photos: 4 perish in gory Yapei accident

In the early hours of last Thursday morning, the police boss intimated that Azumah allegedly led an onslaught in the area and robbed, at least, five homes.

In another development, Inusa Musah reports from Prampram that the Prampram District Police had picked Ali Kofi Sewanu as a suspect in the gruesome murder and burning of a family of three at Zutsukope, a farming community at Tsopoli, a suburb of the Ningo-Prampram District in the Greater Accra Region.

Joshua Koranteng Oman, 35, his wife and three-year-old child were ambushed, killed and set ablaze by unknown assailants at about 8pm last Thursday night when they were on their way home after fetching water from a stream.

The deceased were charred beyond recognition, but their Nissan Hardbody pickup, with registration number GW 8970 V, aided neighbours to locate their immediate relations to break the gory news to them.

On Monday, September 16, The Chronicle gathered that the Ningo-Prampram District Police Command had arrested an uncle of Joshua Oman, Ali Kofi Sewanu, as a suspect in the dastardly act.

Though the police had commenced investigations into the criminal act, the mother of the deceased, Amuosie Apenti, told The Chronicle at the police station that sometime in August this year, her son, the deceased, requested that the extended family give him a parcel of land to embark upon shifting cultivation.

The farmland he had been cultivating for over a decade had lost fertility, so the deceased hardly harvested good crop yields, Madam Amousie explained.

“At the family meeting, my brother [suspect] told my son that if he made a move to take another farmland from the family, he would wipe him off from the earth. In fact, the statement was deep, so some of the family elders reported the matter to the Ningo Traditional Council for arbitration.

“Arbitration did not travel far, only to hear the devastating death of my son, his wife and child,” she told the press in the Dangbe language.

Madam Amousie expressed confidence in the police at getting to the bottom of the matter and allow the law to deal with the actors.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Issah Cantona, Ningo-Prampram District Police Commander, told media personnel that the police would rely on vital information to arrest all the actors in the murder.

He said statements had been taken from three family members, “and we are going to invite more of them to help us in our investigations.” Meanwhile, the charred remains of the three have been deposited at the Police Hospital.
