The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Habib Mahama, who confirmed the death of the nurse, said he died on Friday.

He said the deceased worked at the Paediatric Unit of the hospital as a Registered General Nurse, adding that 15 staff of the facility had tested positive to the virus, and advocated mass testing for all staff of the War Memorial Hospital to be sure that more staff were not infected.

Mr Mahama also called on the management of the hospital to close down the facility for fumigation to ensure a safe environment for healthcare delivery.

He said the leadership of the GRNMA in the Municipality was yet to get more information on how his members were responding to treatment at the Centre, and further advised members of the Association in the Region to adhere to the health protocols.

“All is not lost, we have to observe the necessary protocols to make sure that we keep ourselves safe. We also want to call on authorities of the health care system to ensure that the necessary Personal Protective Equipment and other logistics are provided for our members to enable them work without fear,” he said.

Some health professionals, who attended to the deceased at the treatment centre before he passed on, disclosed to the GNA that his oxygen concentration level on arrival at the treatment centre was about 34 per cent, and despite all interventions, to save him, he passed on.

Meanwhile, a situation report from the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, compiled by Dr Emmanuel Dzotsi the Regional Director and his team, indicated that there were 39 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.

The report said 22 out of the number were females, while 17 were males.

It said two of the female cases were less than 15 years, three were between the ages of 15 to 24 years, seven were between 25 to 34 years, four were between 35 to 44 years, two between 45 and 59 and four were above 59 years.

On the part of the male cases in the Municipality, the report indicated that eight persons out of the 17 males who tested positive were from the ages of 25 to 34, while nine ranged from the ages of 35 and above 59 years.

According to the report, 586 cases and contact tracing were done, out of which 528 turned negative while results of 19 persons were pending.

The deceased had co-morbidities such as hypertension, puerperal sepsis, CVA, and chronic kidney disease while one, a 44-year-old man had none.

Two of the deaths were from the Northern and Central regions respectively while the others from the Oti and Western regions had one case each.

Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, 28, who worked as a nurse on a general ward at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital for five years, died on Sunday.

Her baby daughter was delivered successfully by caesarean section and is doing well, according to the hospital – although it is not clear whether she has also tested positive for the disease.

Now it has been claimed by a family member that the nurse’s father, Stephen, also lost his battle to the virus just weeks ago.

According to the nurse’s brother, Charles Agyapong, the situation was “very sad” and a “hard time” for the family.

The 28-year-old reportedly underwent an emergency cesarean to deliver and save her baby daughter.

It has not been confirmed whether the baby has tested positive for the virus.

Colleagues said the mum was a “fabulous nurse and a great example of what we stand for”.

The chief executive of the Trust sad the nurse was a “wonderful young woman who made a huge contribution”.

According to Channel 4, an internal email to staff told how the decision was made to perform an emergency cesarean after her condition deteriorated.

Doctors had previously thought her condition had been improving, but she worsened on Sunday.

The baby is described as a “beacon of light at this very dark time”.

At least 30 NHS workers have died while working on the frontline of the coronavirus fight.

Medics have been calling for more personal protection equipment – with reports of nurses sharing masks and gowns.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has promised to investigate every death of an NHS worker.

No10 insisted 22 million items were delivered to 268 organisations across the NHS on Easter Monday, including more than 2.5 million aprons.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “We have always acknowledged there have been some issues in terms of distribution but where that has occurred we have worked very hard to resolve them.”

Meanwhile, one researcher claimed the PPE crisis is the “21st century’s Dunkirk”.

University of Oxford Professor Trisha Greenhalgh is leading reviews of research on PPE.

Referring to the evacuation of Allied soldiers in the Second World War, she said: “As Covid-19 deaths escalate, the main story about PPE has become the lack of it.
