The Rossoneri last won this trophy in 2003, while it was the Rossoblu’s first Final in 51 years, but it was also precious for guaranteeing Europa League qualification.

Santiago Castro, Ndoye and Emil Holm returned to the starting XI, with Giovanni Fabbian preferred to Jens Odgaard, leaving Martin Erlic and Estanis Pedrola on the treatment table. Youssouf Fofana and Rafael Leao were back in the line-up, with only Riccardo Sottil and Warren Bondo injured for the showdown on neutral turf at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Bizarrely, these teams already met last Friday in Serie A, Milan emerging 3-1 winners at San Siro.

Within three minutes, Rafael Leao had turned Jhon Lucumi inside out to pull back from the by-line, but Alex Jimenez could only fire over from six yards under pressure.

Mike Maignan came flying off his line to smother at the feet of Riccardo Orsolini, despite the very tight offside call, while Maignan got down to palm the Castro glancing header off the line.

Lukasz Skorupski needed sensational reactions to parry both the deflected Alex Jimenez cross off Sam Beukema and the Luka Jovic rebound from point-blank range.

Maignan smothered a Holm header on a corner and Milan immediately countered, Lewis Ferguson booked for bringing down Rafael Leao, getting his nose accidentally smashed in the process. Moments later, the Rossoneri were furious when they felt Ferguson should’ve received a second yellow card for his coming together with Christian Pulisic, but the decision went against them, and the American was booked instead for dissent.

After the restart, Leao squirmed away from Holm to roll across for Jovic, intercepted crucially by Lucumi, but it was Bologna who took the lead.

Orsolini sprung the offside trap on a through ball and was tackled by Theo Hernandez, but it fell to Ndoye who managed to control and smash into the net from 11 yards to open the scoring.

When these teams faced off in Serie A on Friday, Bologna had also taken the lead, only for Milan to turn it around after moving to a four-man defence. Sergio Conceicao made similar changes here, introducing Santiago Gimenez, Kyle Walker and Joao Felix.

Fofana surged forward only to over-hit the pass for Jovic, who hit the side-netting, while Joao Felix horribly scuffed his finish on the Tijjani Reijnders pull-back, then Santiago Gimenez did the same on the Theo Hernandez assist.

Ndoye drilled wide from a promising position, but Milan didn’t do enough to get back into the game and continue their record of being the club with the most Coppa Italia runner-up medals, this being their 10th.

Juventus beat Atalanta to win Coppa Italia https://www.adomonline.com/juventus-beat-atalanta-to-win-coppa-italia/ Thu, 16 May 2024 07:14:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2395671 Juventus won their first major trophy in three years as they beat Atalanta 1-0 to lift a record-extending 15th Coppa Italia.

Dusan Vlahovic scored the only goal in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico after just four minutes when he received Andrea Cambiaso’s pass before finishing from 12 yards out.

The Serbia striker later had a goal disallowed for offside.

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and Juve’s Fabio Miretti hit the woodwork late on.

Under-pressure Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri, who has won a record five Coppas Italia, was sent off towards the end of the game for dissent.

Atalanta’s wait to win a first trophy since the 1963 Coppa Italia goes on – but they have another chance to end that drought next week with the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

Late Milik goal fires Juventus to Coppa Italia final https://www.adomonline.com/late-milik-goal-fires-juventus-to-coppa-italia-final/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 21:54:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384953 Juventus booked their place in the Coppa Italia final in dramatic fashion after a 3-2 aggregate win over Lazio.

Arkadiusz Milik scored seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute to send the Old Lady through at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio’s Valentin Castellanos headed in after 12 minutes into the match in Rome, before adding his second of the tie three minutes after half-time.

Despite losing the second leg 2-1, Massimiliano Allegri’s side progressed.

After losing the first leg in Turin 2-0, Lazio were given hope of turning the semi-final around when Castellanos nodded home from a corner.

The striker then put Lazio 2-0 up on the night, and level on aggregate, after drilling a low shot beyond Mattia Perin just after the break.

With the game heading towards extra time, Poland international Milik tapped into an empty goal to put Juve into the final against Fiorentina or Atalanta.

Inter beat Juventus in extra time to win Coppa Italia https://www.adomonline.com/inter-beat-juventus-in-extra-time-to-win-coppa-italia/ Thu, 12 May 2022 08:34:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2113675 Inter Milan came from behind against Juventus to clinch a first Coppa Italia since 2011 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s 80th-minute penalty forced extra time and Ivan Perisic scored twice in three minutes as Inter lifted the cup for the eighth time.

Nicolo Barella’s superb strike had put Inter ahead after six minutes.

But holders Juventus scored twice in quick succession through Alex Sandro and Dusan Vlahovic to turn the game around early in the second half.

Defeat ended record 14-time winners Juventus’ hopes of a trophy this season – the first time that has happened since 2010-11.

Serie A title chasers Inter, who are second and two points behind city rivals AC Milan with two games to go, had not reached the final of the competition since their previous triumph 11 years ago.

Barella gave Inter the perfect start when he curled a sublime right-foot shot into the top corner after cutting inside from the left to score the fastest Coppa Italia final goal since 2015.

Samir Handanovic produced a fine save to deny Vlahovic and Paulo Dybala shot wide as Juventus chased an equaliser before the break.

But Massimiliano Allegri’s side were ahead within seven minutes of the restart thanks to goals from Sandro and Vlahovic, who followed up his own saved effort after a quick counter-attack.

Calhanoglu held his nerve to force extra time after Lautaro Martinez was brought down by Leonardo Bonucci, and Perisic then stepped up from the penalty spot to put Inter back in front after 99 minutes.

Perisic added a stunning fourth just three minutes later, taking a touch before firing into the top corner from the edge of the box to put the contest out of Juventus’ reach.

Inter will now face Cagliari and Sampdoria in their final two league games as they pursue a domestic double.

Chiesa fires Juventus to Coppa Italia glory https://www.adomonline.com/chiesa-fires-juventus-to-coppa-italia-glory/ Thu, 20 May 2021 08:10:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1961794 Federico Chiesa clinched a Coppa Italia triumph for Juventus and a first trophy for coach Andrea Pirlo with a 2-1 victory over Atalanta in the final on Wednesday.

Another early Champions League exit and a limp Serie A title defence left Pirlo staring at a disappointing debut season as Juventus coach. But goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Chiesa earned his side Italian Cup glory to leave the Juve coach something to show for the campaign.

With fans in attendance for the first time in Italy since March, it was Juve who took the lead at the Mapei Stadium, against the run of play, thanks to a fine finish from Kulusevski in the 31st minute.

Atalanta, looking to win their first Italian Cup since 1963, deservedly levelled through Ruslan Malinovskiy four minutes before the break.

But Pirlo’s side stepped it up after the break, almost restoring the lead on the hour mark when Cristiano Ronaldo produced a brilliant backheeled flick to set up Chiesa, only for his shot to come back off the post.

But the goal did come 12 minutes later, as Chiesa fired home his 13th goal in all competitions this season in the 73rd minute to spark jubilant scenes among the Juve players and staff at the final whistle.

The celebrations centred around 43-year-old goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, who was likely playing his final game for Juventus.

Juve edge out Inter to reach Coppa Italia final https://www.adomonline.com/juve-edge-out-inter-to-reach-coppa-italia-final/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 08:15:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1917592 Juventus held Inter to a goalless draw to confirm their place in the final of the Coppa Italia, thanks to a narrow victory on aggregate.

Cristiano Ronaldo – whose double in the first leg gave Juventus a 2-1 lead – had the best chances in an entertaining first-half but Inter’s defenders threw their bodies in the way to prevent the Portuguese, with Alessandro Bastoni and Stefan De Vrij both making important blocks, and Samir Handanovic also saved a shot with his feet.

At the opposite end, Romelu Lukaku couldn’t turn Milan Skriniar’s header in at the far post and the returning Christian Eriksen’s goalbound shot was repelled, as Inter, needing to score at least two goals to advance, failed to find a way through before the interval.

The second-half took some time to open up but when it did Handanovic needed to be alert to deny Ronaldo what would have been a goal of the season contender.

Substitute Stefano Sensi went closest for the visitors but ultimately Antonio Conte’s men lacked the creativity to undo a stubborn Juventus.

Andrea Pirlo’s side will now meet Atalanta or Napoli in the final – if it’s the latter it would be a repeat of last year’s final in which Juventus lost on penalties.
