The 68-year-old mathematics professor was widely expected to win after the main opposition coalition boycotted the poll, citing concerns about electoral fairness.

Touadéra campaigned on his security record in the chronically unstable nation after rebels seized power in 2013, a crisis that led the government to enlist support from Russian mercenaries and Rwandan soldiers.

He has faced heavy criticism after a 2023 constitution removed term limits, allowing him to keep running for office.

More than 2.4 million people registered for the 28 December general election, which observers described as largely peaceful despite delays caused by the late arrival of voting material and problems with the electoral register.

Touadéra secured 76% of the vote, according to preliminary results announced late on Monday by the election agency.

His closest challengers, Anicet-Georges Dologuélé and Henri-Marie Dondra, both former prime ministers, received 15% and 3% of the vote respectively.

Both have called for the results to be annulled, alleging widespread irregularities and fraud.

On Friday, Dologuélé said there had been “a methodical attempt to manipulate” the outcome.

The main opposition coalition, known by its French acronym BRDC, boycotted the election, saying it was unlikely to be fair.

The government has denied the claims.

The Constitutional Court has until 20 January to rule on any challenges and declare the final results.

The CAR is one of Africa’s poorest and most unstable countries, even though it is rich in resources such as diamonds and uranium. The UN estimates that about half the population is dependent on humanitarian aid.

Since 2013, the landlocked country has been mired in conflict after rebels seized power, ousting then-President François Bozizé.

A 2019 peace deal between the government and 14 armed groups helped ease tensions, though six of the groups later withdrew from the agreement.

Analysts say Touadéra’s win could bolster the interests of Russia, which has provided security assistance in exchange for access to resources such as gold and diamonds.

The CAR was one of the first African countries where Wagner, a Russian mercenary group, became active, providing security to Touadéra.

2026 WCQ: Nothing could have stopped Black Stars against CAR – Jordan Ayew after 5-0 win https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-nothing-could-have-stopped-black-stars-against-car-jordan-ayew-after-5-0-win/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 23:36:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586691 Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has declared that Ghana’s dominant 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic was unstoppable.

In Wednesday’s Matchday 9 clash of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars ran rampant at the Stade d’Honneur, with goals from Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, Alexander Djiku, and Kamaldeen Sulemana extending Ghana’s lead at the top of Group I to 22 points.

The emphatic result puts Ghana just one point away from securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the match, the Leicester City forward credited the team’s unity and determination for the commanding performance.

“With the determination and motivation we had today, whoever was on the pitch against us would’ve lost. From the first minute, we were at it,” Ayew said.

“When we scored the first goal, we were all happy, united, and playing as brothers — and this is what I want to see. If we keep this commitment and attitude, no one can stop us,” he added.

The Black Stars now turn their focus to Sunday’s decisive clash against Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, where a single point will be enough to confirm Ghana’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage.

The emphatic win, secured in Matchday 9 of the qualifiers, featured goals from Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, putting Ghana firmly on course for next year’s World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Gyan expressed admiration for the team’s clinical performance, particularly in the second half following tactical adjustments by the coaching staff.

“I haven’t seen this in a long time. First, I want to thank Ghanaians for their massive support. In the first half, we struggled a bit physically and had to make adjustments, and you saw how offensive and sharp we were in the second half. They’ve shown they can score goals, we scored three against Madagascar and now five today,” Asamoah Gyan told 3Sports.

The victory keeps Ghana atop Group I with 22 points, placing them on the brink of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Despite the dominant display, Gyan urged fans to hold off on celebrations and turn out in force for Sunday’s final qualifier against Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“But it’s not time to celebrate yet. We must finish the job in Accra, and I’m calling on all fans to come in their numbers to support the team,” Gyan added.

Ghana thrash Central African Republic to near 2026 World Cup qualification https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-thrash-central-african-republic-to-near-2026-world-cup-qualification/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 18:07:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586600 The Black Stars of Ghana took a giant step toward securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a resounding 5–0 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) on Wednesday afternoon.

At the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, head coach Otto Addo named a strong starting lineup featuring the return of winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who made his first start since recovering from injury.

Needing a win to stay on course for next summer’s global showpiece in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ghana started cautiously as CAR launched two quick counterattacks in the opening minutes. However, the Black Stars’ defence remained solid, and both teams shared early spells of possession.

Ghana soon found their rhythm and began to pile pressure on the CAR backline. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when defender Mohammed Salisu rose highest to head home Mohammed Kudus’ corner.

Kudus came close to doubling the lead shortly after, but his effort was cleared off the line, while midfielder Kwasi Sibo, making only his second appearance for the national team, narrowly missed with a long-range strike.

The Black Stars maintained their dominance, controlling the tempo and possession for the remainder of the first half, which ended 1–0 in their favour.

Ghana resumed the second half with renewed intensity, and their efforts paid off when Thomas Partey fired home in the 52nd minute after a neat assist from Jordan Ayew.

The Central African Republic threatened briefly, coming close to a consolation in the 63rd minute, but their shot went wide. A minute later, Jordan Ayew received a yellow card following a heated exchange with a CAR player.

The Black Stars quickly reasserted control, extending their lead to 3–0 through Alexander Djiku, who headed in another Ayew corner in the 68th minute. Jordan Ayew then turned scorer himself three minutes later, capitalising on a defensive lapse to make it 4–0.

Otto Addo introduced several substitutes, Elisha Owusu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Joseph Paintsil, replacing Antoine Semenyo, Partey, and Issahaku, to keep the momentum. Kamaldeen nearly added to the tally but saw his curling effort drift just wide.

In the 82nd minute, Kudus and Salisu made way for Prince Owusu and Jerome Opoku, and five minutes later, Ghana completed the rout. Kamaldeen Sulemana latched onto a Paintsil cross to slot home the fifth goal in the 87th minute.

The emphatic victory lifts Ghana to the top of Group I with 22 points. The Black Stars now need just a point against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium to confirm their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match is set for later today at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, as part of Matchday 9 of the African qualifiers.

Forecasts indicate temperatures of around 28°C at kick-off — a climate Addo believes will help his players perform comfortably.

“I am happy that we don’t play in the afternoon,” he told the Ghana FA website.

“It’s more going late into the evening, so it’s good, and this is truly an advantage for us and easier for our players to adapt,” Addo added.

2026 WCQ: Central African Republic v Ghana preview https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-central-african-republic-v-ghana-preview/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 05:56:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586332 The Black Stars of Ghana are on the brink of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to face the Central African Republic (CAR) in their penultimate Group I fixture today, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes.

Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Ghana currently sits atop Group I with 19 points, three clear of second-placed Madagascar. A win over their already-eliminated opponents could see Otto Addo’s men take a decisive step toward their fifth World Cup appearance.

Match Preview

Victory on Wednesday would all but guarantee Ghana’s qualification, though the final confirmation could depend on results elsewhere — particularly in the clash between Madagascar and Comoros, which kicks off simultaneously.

Should Madagascar fail to beat Comoros, a Ghana win would officially seal their ticket to the 2026 Mundial.

The Black Stars have been impressive throughout the qualifiers, winning six of their eight matches. Their only setbacks came in a 1-0 loss to Comoros on Matchday 2 and a 1-1 draw with Chad in September. They bounced back strongly with a 1-0 victory over Mali in Accra, extending their tally to 17 goals — the highest in the group — while conceding just six.

Otto Addo’s side has shown consistency in 2024, registering four wins in six games (D1, L1). Facing a side with nothing to play for, the expectation is that Ghana will deliver another confident performance.

CAR, meanwhile, are battling for pride. The Les Fauves have endured a disappointing campaign, losing five of their last six matches across all competitions and failing to score in their most recent five outings.

Their only win in the qualifiers came in a 1-0 victory over Chad in June 2024. However, with 17 goals conceded — the second-most in the group — and an eight-match winless run (D3, L5), head coach Eloge Enza Yamissi’s men face a daunting task against the in-form Black Stars.

Qualification Scenarios

Ghana will officially qualify if:

  • They defeat CAR, and Madagascar fail to beat Comoros.
  • A draw between Madagascar and Comoros, combined with a Ghana win, would also confirm qualification.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to finish the job.

“We are very close. The players have their destiny in their hands. They have done all the work and must add the finishing touch. They should go out, play their hearts out and get the win,” noted Gyan.

“Some games come with good pressure and keep you on your toes. This is one of those games. I feel there is a bit of pressure, but that is normal. Some of the players did it in 2022, and I am sure they can handle it.”

Team News

CAR coach Eloge Enza Yamissi has named a 23-man squad for their doubleheader against Ghana and Chad, retaining much of his previous selection. A 5-3-2 formation is expected, though Isaac Ngoma misses out. Louis Mafouta — the nation’s all-time top scorer with 16 goals — is set to lead the line alongside Moustapha Djimet.

For Ghana, Otto Addo has named a 24-man squad featuring the returning duo of Alidu Seidu and Fatawu Issahaku after lengthy injury layoffs.
The squad also includes key figures such as Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, and Mohammed Kudus, who netted his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Antoine Semenyo, in fine form for Bournemouth with six Premier League goals, is expected to start in attack. Addo is likely to maintain his preferred 3-4-3 system, with Kudus, Ayew, and Semenyo forming the attacking trio.

Alexander Djiku, who scored the winner against Mali, should marshal the defence alongside Mohammed Salisu and Jonas Adjitey, while Benjamin Asare is expected to remain in goal.

Probable Lineups

Central African Republic:

Abimala, F. Yangoa, Gambor, Miambaye, Basse-Zokana; Beyissa, Oualengbe, Gusset, Yawanendji; Djimet, Mafouta

Ghana:

Asare, Salisu, Djiku, Opoku; Alidu, Mensah, Sibo, Partey; Semenyo, Ayew, Kudus

Prediction:

Central African Republic 0–2 Ghana

The Black Stars are expected to maintain their momentum and edge closer to another World Cup appearance with a composed display in Meknes.

2026 WCQ: It is normal – Otto Addo on pressure ahead of CAR encounter https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-it-is-normal-otto-addo-on-pressure-ahead-of-car-encounter/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 05:41:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586326 Ghana head coach Otto Addo says he remains calm under pressure as the Black Stars prepare to face the Central African Republic in their penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The four-time African champions will play the match at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco today, October 8, as they look to secure a vital win and hope for favourable results elsewhere to seal qualification for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“The so-called pressure that we have right now is normal,” Addo told reporters.

“When we are first and just two matches to go, it’s expected. The players are experienced enough. Surely, we have some young ones, but we also have experienced players who will guide them.”

The 47-year-old tactician added that scoring early could help ease the tension during the match.

“I’m just hoping that we can have an early goal — it will make things easier.”

Ghana currently sit top of Group I with 19 points, three ahead of Madagascar and four clear of Comoros. Addo emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in his squad as the qualifiers draw to a close.

“Consistency is the key to success. If you make too many changes, it’s difficult for the players to connect,” he said.

The Black Stars’ encounter against the Central African Republic kicks off at 16:00 GMT. They will conclude their qualifying campaign on Sunday, October 12, when they host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars face CAR today, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès in Morocco, in their penultimate Group I qualifier.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Addo revealed that his squad is well-prepared and in high spirits ahead of the crucial encounter.

“We are in a comfortable position that we can look at ourselves and we want to win this game,” Addo said. “If we win this game, we have a high probability of qualifying for the World Cup. But this is just the first step.”

Addo emphasized the need for focus and defensive discipline throughout the 90 minutes, recalling lessons from their hard-fought victory over Chad.

“We have to fight defensively, especially to the last minute. I have a very good feeling that we can keep a clean sheet and score one or two goals.”

When asked about the prospect of becoming the first Ghanaian coach to guide the national team to two World Cups, Addo downplayed the personal milestone.

“I don’t think too much about myself; it’s about the team. We want to win this game tomorrow, and then we’ll see.”

Ghana currently lead Group I with 19 points, three ahead of second-placed Madagascar. The Black Stars will wrap up their qualifying campaign on Sunday, October 12, when they host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana currently top Group I with 19 points and could secure qualification for next year’s global showpiece with a win, provided Madagascar drop points against Comoros.

The Black Stars enter Wednesday’s clash in strong form, unbeaten in their last six qualifying matches, including a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Mali last month.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Addo said his team must carry their momentum from the Mali game into this decisive fixture while learning from past mistakes.

“We were very happy with the result against Mali, and we are taking this positive feeling into the C.A.R game,” Addo told the press.

“It is always like that. Everybody knows what this game is about, and I hope we take this positive vibe into the game.

“Everything is in our hands, but I hope that we learned the lesson from the last away game against Chad.

“It is important that we stay focused and concentrated and not think we have already won because that is a big danger,” he added.

“At the end, we have worked together because it’s a team sport. Individuals can make a change, but the most important thing is to work together, work to our strengths and know how to respond when things go wrong,” the 49-year-old said.

Ghana sit at the top of their qualifying group and are on the verge of booking a fifth appearance at the global showpiece.

The team faces the Central African Republic (CAR) on Wednesday at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT. A win could be enough to secure qualification, depending on results elsewhere.

Gyan, who is currently with the squad in camp, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver despite acknowledging the mounting pressure.

“We are very close. The players have their destiny in their hands. They have done all the work and must add the finishing touch. They should go out, play their hearts out and get the win,” he told 3 Sports.

The legendary striker, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, also spoke about the mental aspect of such decisive fixtures.

“Some games come with good pressure and keep you on your toes. This is one of those games. I feel there is a bit of pressure, but that is normal. Some of the players did it in 2022, and I am sure they can handle it,” he added.

The Black Stars are expected to depart Casablanca for Meknes today to wrap up preparations for the encounter with CAR. They will then return home to face Comoros in their final qualifier on October 12 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars will travel to the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT, in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum acknowledged the difficulties ahead but emphasized the team’s determination to secure a positive result.

“The game against Central African Republic (CAR) will be a tricky one, but we don’t want to experience what happened in Chad again, so we must do everything possible to win this game,” he said.

He added that the focus remains on setting up a strong finish in Ghana’s final qualifier against Comoros in Accra.

“CAR is fighting for nothing, and that is why it is tricky. We must get this done to make the final game against Comoros a crowning moment for the team and the entire country, he added.

The Black Stars opened camp in Casablanca on Sunday, October 5, ahead of their trip to Morocco. Ghana will then host Comoros at home on Sunday, October 12.

The 25-year-old replaces Athletic Bilbao striker Iñaki Williams, who was forced to withdraw from the team after sustaining an injury during his side’s La Liga clash with Real Mallorca on Saturday.

Thomas-Asante, who has been in impressive form for Coventry in the English Championship, was initially omitted from the squad for the games against the Central African Republic and Comoros. However, Williams’ injury has opened the door for his return to the national team — his first since featuring in the Unity Cup in May.

The in-form attacker joined the Black Stars camp on Sunday ahead of their second training session scheduled for Monday, October 4.

Thomas-Asante has made a strong start to the 2025–26 campaign, scoring five goals and providing three assists in nine league appearances. He underlined his sharpness with a brace in Coventry’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

The Ghanaian forward has one goal in four senior appearances for the national team.

Ghana will take on the Central African Republic on Wednesday, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco, before hosting Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

2026 WCQ: GFA endorses $1.2m budget for Black Stars’ games against CAR and Comoros https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-gfa-endorses-1-2m-budget-for-black-stars-games-against-car-and-comoros/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 11:13:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584701 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has welcomed government’s approval of a $1.2 million budget to cover expenses for the Black Stars’ final round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Buem, confirmed on Monday, September 29, that the allocation will cater for the team’s crucial fixtures against the Central African Republic and Comoros.

The breakdown includes $733,000 for the away clash in Casablanca on October 8 and $387,000 for the home tie in Accra on October 12.

Speaking to Woezor TV’s Arena, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained that the Association had submitted projected costs based on past experiences, leaving the Sports Ministry to finalise the figures.

“The budget the Ghana Football Association (GFA) sent to the Sports Ministry are the actuals. Everything we presented to the Ministry are estimates or projections, and that is based on experience, based on games that we play. Let us not forget that there are inconsistencies in terms of figures because we do not play at one venue,” Asante Twum said.

“During the September internal window, we played in Chad for the away game, and then we came back to Ghana to play against Mali. This time around, we are going to Morocco, so the expenses made against Chad will not be the same for the game against Central African Republic in Morocco in terms of feeding, hotel, internal rounds, cost of training facility and other things. Once we make those projections on empirical evidence, research, facts and historical antecedents, it is always up to the Sports Ministry to take the final decision so we don’t have any reservations, or whatsoever.

“We presented a budget estimate, and the Sports Ministry have come up with the actuals, and we have to move forward from there,” he added.

The Black Stars will face the Central African Republic at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes, Morocco, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT, before returning to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 12 at 19:00 GMT.

Victory in these two games would secure Ghana’s qualification for a fifth FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, four-time African champions, are set to face the Central African Republic and Comoros in Matchday 9 and 10 later this month.

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, disclosed on Woezor TV’s Arena that players who feature for their clubs on Saturday will report to camp on Sunday, while those in action on Sunday will join the squad the following day.

“We are expecting the players who will play on Saturday to arrive in camp on Sunday, and those who will play on Sunday to report to camp on Monday.

“Depending on the number of home-based players who will make the cut, they will join the rest of the technical team and the entire contingent in Morocco,” he added.

He further confirmed that head coach Otto Addo has submitted and defended his final squad list for the double-header.

Ghana will first play the Central African Republic at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco on Wednesday, October 8, with kick-off at 16:00 GMT.

2026 WCQ: FIFA confirms venue change for Ghana’s game against CAR https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-fifa-confirms-venue-change-for-ghanas-game-against-car/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 21:35:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584422 World football governing body FIFA has announced a change of venue for Ghana’s penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The fixture, initially scheduled for El Jadida, will now take place at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco on Tuesday, October 8, 2025.

CAR, who have been forced to host their home matches in Morocco due to the lack of an approved stadium in their country, will have limited home advantage—a situation that could favour the Black Stars.

Ghana, in a strong position on the qualifying table, require four points from their remaining two games against CAR and Comoros to secure a place at their fifth World Cup.

A win in Meknes, coupled with slip-ups from their closest challengers, could confirm qualification with one match to spare.

Match officials for the encounter have also been confirmed. Mauritius’ Patrice Milazare will referee the game, assisted by compatriot Louis Ralph Fabien Cauvelet and Seychelles’ Shaji Padayachy. Another Seychellois, Noris Aaron Godfrey Arissol, will serve as the fourth official.

Senegal’s Fatou Gaye has been named referee assessor, with Morocco’s Jamal Kaouachi acting as match commissioner and Nigeria’s Efughu Odochi Joan appointed as security officer.

After the game against Central African Republic, the Black Stars will take on Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium in the final group game on Sunday, October 12.

2026 WCQ: Black Stars will open camp in Morocco for CAR game – Henry Asante Twum https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-black-stars-will-open-camp-in-morocco-for-car-game-henry-asante-twum/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 21:34:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584393 Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has confirmed that the Black Stars will pitch camp in Morocco ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The team was expected to assemble in Accra before travelling for the match, which takes place on Wednesday, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes.

However, plans have now been revised, with the squad set to regroup directly in Morocco on Sunday, October 5.

Explaining the decision in an interview with Woezor TV’s Arena, Asante Twum said the adjustment was necessary to allow the players more recovery time and to avoid logistical challenges.

“Various discussions have been held, and I can confirm that there is a proposal that the players will report to Morocco instead of Accra because we don’t have enough time to prepare for the game,” he said.

He noted that since most of the players will feature for their clubs over the weekend, they are expected to report to camp on Sunday, with the final batch arriving on Monday.

These players will play for their respective clubs this weekend, so we are expecting that the players will report to camp on Sunday and then the last badge of players are expected on Monday since the game is on a Wednesday so if they reports to Accra, they will have to be flown to Morocco either on Monday or Tuesday which will be a lot of work because the players will not have enough time and space to rest in between the period and some of the players will be coming from a far disctance so the last meeting we had, we proposed that we will meet in Morocco instead of meeting in Accra before flying to Morocco and that what is being firmed up,” he added.

Asante Twum also revealed that head coach Otto Addo has finalized his squad for the double-header, with the official list expected to be announced this week.

Following the clash with CAR, the Black Stars will return to Accra to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, in their final qualifier.

Ghana currently lead Group I with 19 points and require a victory to confirm their fifth World Cup appearance.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, Sports Minister Kofi Adams confirmed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had submitted a proposal “within an acceptable range,” requiring no adjustments from the Ministry.

“The FA submitted a budget within an acceptable range, and the Ministry did not need to add any comments,” Kofi Adams said.

He explained that the GFA formally submitted the estimates for both matches on September 18, 2025, and the Ministry forwarded the submission to the Office of the President on September 19, in line with due process.

According to the Minister, the budget includes $733,000 for the away fixture in Casablanca against the Central African Republic and $387,000 for the home match in Accra against Comoros.

Former head of Central African football body jailed for war crimes https://www.adomonline.com/former-head-of-central-african-football-body-jailed-for-war-crimes/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 07:31:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559712 The former head of the Central African Republic (CAR) football federation, Patrice-Edouard Ngaïssona, has been found guilty of committing 28 war crimes and crimes against humanity by judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He was accused, alongside Alfred Yekatom, of co-ordinating attacks against the country’s Muslim population in 2013-14.

Yekatom, nicknamed Rambo, was found guilty of 20 charges. The judges gave their verdict after a trial lasting almost four years involving more than 170 witnesses and nearly 20,000 items of evidence.

Ngaïssona was sentenced to 12 years, and Yekatom to 15 years.

Violence has gripped the CAR for much of the past decade, but a recent peace deal led to the dissolution of two rebel groups this month.

CAR was plunged into turmoil in 2013 when predominantly Muslim rebels from the Séléka group seized power in the majority Christian country.

A band of mostly Christian militias, called the anti-Balaka, rose up to counter Séléka after then-President François Bozizé was ousted.

Ngaïssona and Yekatom were convicted of numerous crimes, including murder, torture and persecuting a religious group.

Ngaïssona was acquitted of rape, while Yekatom was cleared of enlisting children as soldiers.

Both men had denied all charges.

The prosecution set out the alleged system of command, saying Ngaïssona provided funds and instructions to anti-Balaka groups in 2013 and 2014.

Yekatom was a commander who allegedly led fighters into the capital, Bangui, on 5 December 2013 where civilians were slaughtered.

The prosecution said the pair’s strategy was to make all Muslims their target, describing them as “enemies of the nation”.

Yekatom authorised his fighters to attack Muslim civilians, including to slit throats, cut off ears and bury people alive, the prosecution alleged.

Asked to enter a plea at the start of the trial, both men rejected all the charges.

Media reports at the time indicate that at least 1,000 people were killed in tit-for-tat clashes in Bangui in December 2013, and half the city’s population fled in that month alone.

Who is Patrice-Edouard Ngaïssona?

He was the self-declared political co-ordinator of anti-Balaka forces.

Ngaïssona was barred from running for CAR president in 2015 because of his alleged role in the atrocities.

He is a former head of the CAR’s football federation and briefly served as sports minister before being elected to the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in February 2018.

His appointment was criticised by several human rights groups.

“If the allegations were true, I wouldn’t be here today,” he told AFP news agency at the time. “[I don’t] mix politics and sport – everything I’ve done has been for the good of my country.”

French authorities arrested him in December 2018, and he was transferred to the ICC in January 2019.

Who is Alfred Yekatom?

Yekatom was elected as an MP in 2016, despite being subject to UN sanctions.

He was arrested in October 2018 after he fired a gun in parliament, then ran away, after a row with a fellow MP.

His extradition to the ICC was the first from CAR.

The International Federation for Human Rights (known by its French acronym FIDH) said it signalled the authorities there were committed to fighting impunity.

U-20 AFCON: CAR game was tough – Ghana’s Abdul Aziz Issah https://www.adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-car-game-was-tough-ghanas-abdul-aziz-issah/ Fri, 09 May 2025 12:13:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533423 Ghana U-20 midfielder Abdul Aziz Issah has admitted that their final group-stage match against the Central African Republic (CAR) posed a significant challenge, despite the Black Satellites emerging with a crucial 1-0 victory on Thursday.

The tightly contested encounter at the Suez Canal Stadium saw Ghana secure all three points thanks to a decisive goal from Joseph Opoku.

The win ensured Ghana finished as leaders of Group C at the ongoing 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“It was a difficult game, but we managed to pick up the win,” Aziz Issah, who was also named Man of the Match, said after the game.

“We knew the game was going to be tough because they needed a win to qualify, and we also needed a point, although we had qualified, but we needed a win to top the group.”

Issah credited the team’s determination for seeing them through in the final moments.

“So we knew it was going to be a difficult game, but we thank God we got the win in the dying minute,” he added.

With the result, head coach Desmond Ofei’s side advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face one of the third-placed teams from Group A or B.

The Black Satellites now have their sights set on reaching the semi-finals, which would automatically secure them a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.

The all-important fixture is set for Thursday afternoon at the Suez Canal Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 GMT.

After opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, the Black Satellites bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal on Monday night.

The win has propelled Ghana to joint top of Group C alongside DR Congo, with both teams sitting on four points after two matches.

“We have arrived in Ismailia for our final group match against the Central African Republic,” said Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association, in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“Our goal is to progress to the next round. With the momentum from our win over Senegal, I’m confident the team will get the job done on Thursday,” he added.

A victory against CAR would guarantee Ghana a spot in the next round of the competition.

The team is scheduled to hold training sessions on Tuesday evening and Wednesday as preparations intensify ahead of the must-win clash.

The Black Satellites are aiming to finish the group stage on a high note and mount a strong challenge for a record-extending fourth U-20 AFCON title, which would also secure qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

The Black Satellites secured a crucial 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal on Monday at the New Suez Stadium, thanks to a first-half goal from Emmanuel Mensah.

The win follows their 1-1 opening draw against DR Congo, leaving Ghana in a strong position heading into their last group match.

Ghana will face CAR on Thursday, 8th May 2025, in a decisive encounter that could determine their path in the tournament.

Speaking after the hard-fought win over the Teranga Lions, Coach Ofei acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and fighting spirit.

“We know the game against the Central African Republic will be difficult. But just like today, we’ll fight, prepare well, and give our best,” he said.

Ofei also reiterated the team’s ultimate ambition — qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup set to be held in Qatar later this year.

“Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup. That’s the focus. Each match and positive result takes us a step closer.”

Rigobert Song named new Central African Republic coach https://www.adomonline.com/rigobert-song-named-new-central-african-republic-coach/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 09:50:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493099 Former Liverpool and West Ham defender Rigobert Song has been appointed as the new head coach of Central African Republic (CAR).

The 48-year-old replaces Swiss coach Raoul Savoy, who was fired in October towards the end of CAR’s unsuccessful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying campaign.

Song, who played a record 137 games for Cameroon during a 17-year international career, previously spent two years in charge of his homeland.

He led the Indomitable Lions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the side was knocked out in the last 16.

Song has been without a managerial role since February 2024, when his contract was not renewed by Cameroon, and takes over one of the few remaining African nations which has never qualified for the Afcon finals.

The Wild Beasts came close to reaching the 2023 tournament but lost their final two qualifiers to drop out of contention.

Song’s first task, however, will be the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign which resumes in March with home games against Madagascar and Mali.

CAR currently sit in fifth place in Group I with four points from four matches, five behind both leaders Comoros and second-placed Ghana.

2026 WCQ: Otto Addo impressed with Black Stars comeback win against CAR https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-otto-addo-impressed-with-black-stars-comeback-win-against-car/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 12:54:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407585 Ghana coach, Otto Addo has praised his team’s impressive second-half comeback win against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The Black Stars were trailing 2-1 at halftime but managed to turn the game around, securing a thrilling 4-3 victory at the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday night in their matchday four encounter of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew was the star of the match, scoring twice in the second half to complete his hat-trick, which included a first-half penalty. Fatawu Issahaku also added a goal, contributing to the team’s hard-fought win.

“We had problems in the first half, finding solutions upfront. But I will take it on my own because the way we played was too complicated given we had only a few days to train,” Addo said in a post-match interview.

“We changed our shape and our wingers, and so in the second half, we had more crosses and goal attempts, but also, defensively, we were more comfortable. This should be our standard. That second-half performance. If we keep at it, the probability is that we can win a lot of matches and prolong this spell” he said.

Ghana now leads Group I with nine points, while Comoros and Madagascar are set to play their matches later on Tuesday.

Otto Addo and his team will next face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025 as they continue their quest in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

2026 WCQ: The rain helped us against CAR – Ghana coach Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-the-rain-helped-us-against-car-ghana-coach-otto-addo/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 15:09:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407616 Ghana coach, Otto Addo, credits rain for Black Stars’ thrilling 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) on Monday night.

The four-time African champions clashed with the Wild Beasts at the Baba Yara Stadium in the matchday four games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew’s impressive hat-trick and a goal from Fatawu Issahaku secured the hard-fought 4-3 win for the Black Stars.

Addo, reflecting on the game, emphasized the significance of the rain in enhancing their performance in the second half.

“The rain helped us step up our game and move the ball swiftly. Grateful to have had. The unwavering support from the fans was immense. Despite setbacks, they stood by us. Thank you, Kumasi, for your unwavering support” he said.

He acknowledged the challenges faced in the first half, attributing them to difficulties in ball control and creating opportunities upfront.

“We encountered issues in controlling the game and finding attacking solutions in the first half. I take responsibility. Perhaps, I demanded too much, considering our limited training time. However, we adjusted in the second half and earned the victory,” Addo conceded.

With this win, Ghana leads Group I with nine points, eagerly awaiting the results of the matches between Madagascar vs. Mali, and Chad vs. Comoros.

The Black Stars now stand in a promising position to advance in their quest for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Otto Addo and his team will resume their Mundial qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

2026 WCQ: Nigeria suffer setback while Ayew hits hat-trick https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-nigeria-suffer-setback-while-ayew-hits-hat-trick/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 10:48:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407574 Nigeria’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign suffered another setback as they lost to Benin, while Jordan Ayew marked his 100th cap with a hat-trick to inspire a 4-3 Ghana victory over Central African Republic.

The Super Eagles have just three points from four matches in Group C after Benin came from behind to win 2-1, with coach Gernot Rohr inflicting defeat on his former employers.

Ayew put Ghana ahead against Central African Republic with an early penalty, but the Black Stars trailed 2-1 at the break after the visitors took advantage of defensive frailties.

The Crystal Palace forward netted twice in the second half and the West Africans eventually saw out a win to go top of Group I, with Louis Mafouta’s treble for CAR in vain.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah salvaged a 1-1 draw for Egypt against Guinea-Bissau to ensure the Pharaohs remain unbeaten at the summit of Group A, and Algeria also avoided a potential shock by recovering from a goal down to beat Uganda 2-1 in Kampala.

The nine group winners at the end of the 10-game campaign will all seal spots at the expanded 2026 World Cup, while a 10th African side could reach the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada via an intercontinental tournament.

The fourth round of matches culminates on Tuesday, after which the qualifiers will resume again in March 2025.

Super Eagles have wings clipped

Nigeria had drawn their first three games in Group C, which has already provided several surprise results and left minnows Lesotho top after three games.

Raphael Onyedika’s composed 27th-minute strike put the Super Eagles ahead in their away game against Benin in neutral Ivory Coast, but the three-time continental champions were behind before the break.

First Jodel Dossou caught Calvin Bassey napping and curled across goal to equalise, and then ex-Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie smashed in at the back post after Nigeria failed to deal with a corner from the right.

Nigeria’s best chance to level came when an unmarked Ademola Lookman headed wide, with striker Paul Onuachu arguably better placed to meet the cross.

Rohr, who had been discarded by Nigeria before the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, was carried on to the pitch by substitutes as Benin celebrated just their second-ever win over their West African neighbours.

Benin climb to the top of Group C on seven points while Nigeria are fifth, increasing the pressure on Finidi George – who was only appointed by the Super Eagles on a permanent deal in April.

In-form Ayew inspires Black Stars

Ghana made a good start in Kumasi after Abdul Fatawu was brought down in the box, but two smart finishes on the counter-attack from Mafouta gave Central African Republic a surprise lead.

Three goals in the space of 10 second-half minutes turned the game in Ghana’s favour, with Ayew nodding in Gideon Mensah’s cross to make it 2-2 on the hour mark.

Two minutes later Ghana were back in front when a shot from Leicester forward Fatawu was deflected in, and Ayew pounced to make it 4-2 from close range after Mohammed Kudus had a low effort saved.

That goal – Ayew’s eighth in his past five outings for Ghana – proved pivotal as Mafouta curled in a 25-yard free-kick in the final minute.

Ayew had also netted an injury-time winner for Otto Addo’s men in Mali on Thursday and the Black Stars now sit three points clear of Madagascar and Comoros in Group I.

Pharaohs stay unbeaten as Salah strikes

Guinea-Bissau threatened an upset against Egypt after Mama Balde’s low strike gave the West Africans a surprise lead just before the break.

Emam Ashour and Salah went close for the Pharaohs before the Liverpool forward’s strike took a deflection into the top left corner with 20 minutes remaining.

Salah had a chance to win it for the North Africans in stoppage time but his effort was smothered by Djurtus goalkeeper Manuel Balde.

Egypt, on 10 points, have a four-point advantage in Group A over second-placed Guinea-Bissau, who have drawn their first two matches under former Fulham assistant coach Luis Boa Morte.

Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone are both a point further behind after the Leone Stars fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away against the Stallions in neutral Mali.

Algeria avoid upset in Kampala

Uganda also took the lead against higher-ranked opponents thanks to a fine low long-range strike from Travis Mutyaba, but Algeria were a side transformed after the break.

Houssem Aouar smashed in within 50 seconds of the restart and Said Benrahma made it 2-1 just before the hour mark when he rounded off a swift counterattack.

Algeria had suffered a shock home defeat against Guinea on Thursday, but stay top of Group G on goal difference after Geny Catamo’s 93rd-minute penalty gave Mozambique a 1-0 win over the Guineans.

Mozambique join Algeria on nine points, with Botswana beating Somalia 3-1 to move on to six points alongside Guinea and Uganda.

Elsewhere, Iban Salvador gave Equatorial Guinea a 1-0 win against Malawi which moved the Central Africans on to three points in Group H, pending a potential appeal to Fifa.

The Equatoguineans won their first two qualifiers but were then sanctioned with 3-0 defeats after the world governing body ruled that striker Emilio Nsue was ineligible.

Monday’s African World Cup qualifying results

Black Stars forward, Mohammed Kudus acknowledges the weight of expectation that accompanies wearing the Ghana national team jersey.

The 23-year-old recently showcased his skills in Ghana’s recent matches against Mali as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Bamako.

Ahead of the upcoming clash against Central African Republic (CAR) at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kudus emphasized the team’s grasp of the pressure, affirming their determination to clinch qualification for the World Cup, set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

“Obviously from our point of view, we have personal goals and things we want to do so intrinsically, we have pressure every time from our expectations from ourselves,” the West Ham United attacker told the press on Sunday.

“Also we are representing the whole team and the whole of Ghana and so there is pressure from every angle but we are motivated to win the game” Kudus stated.

The much-anticipated showdown is slated to commence at 19:00 GMT.

Following their triumph over Mali, the Black Stars are eyeing another victory against CAR to ascend to the summit of Group I.

2026 WCQ: Ghana v Central African Republic Preview https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-ghana-v-central-african-republic-preview/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 13:15:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407118 The Black Stars of Ghana will clash with Central African Republic in the matchday four games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Monday.

After a shaky start to the qualifying series, the Black Stars secured an all-important win against Mali in their matchday three games in Bamako last weekend with Ernest Nuamah and Jordan Ayew scoring in the second half after Kamory Doumbia had scored in the first half.

Otto Addo will aim to record back-to-back wins since his reappointment earlier this year. Both sides head into this clash on the back of morale-boosting victories and will be hoping to build momentum.

The victory propelled Ghana to six points from three matches, placing them third in the group, level on points with leaders Madagascar and second-placed Comoros.

The Black Stars will be hoping to add another win against a side they have a one-win, one-draw record against in their two previous meetings.

Central African Republic, however, claimed their first win of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers thanks to Venuste Baboula’s first-half strike, securing a 1-0 victory over Chad.

Raoul Savoy’s team sit in fifth place with four points from three matches ahead of Monday’s encounter. With the point distance in the group still very close, a win will see them leapfrog Ghana and closer to the top of the table.

Les Fauves have been in excellent form recently, boasting an unbeaten run of four consecutive matches. They have scored a remarkable 12 goals while conceding just once and keeping three clean sheets in a row.

However, Monday’s game will be their toughest test yet, as they travel to a country where they lost last September, marking their only previous visit.

Meanwhile, Otto Addo addressing the media on Sunday admitted that the upcoming clash will be a tough clash.

“It’s going to be very difficult. For anyone expecting an easy match, I’m afraid it won’t be the case,” remarked the former Borussia Dortmund coach.

Team News

The front three consisting of West Ham’s talisman Mohammed Kudus, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Lyon’s Nuamah will likely take to the pitch once again.

CAR’s record goalscorer, Louis Mafouta, will hope to score his first goal of this World Cup qualifying campaign when he leads the line again.

Baboula has directly contributed to the visitors’ last two goals in World Cup qualifying games, and he is a man to watch out for.

The Black Stars entered this game after a 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako, bringing their total to six points from three games.

They currently sit third in Group I, behind leaders Madagascar and Comoros.

Despite the impressive win against the favoured Eagles of Mali, Addo emphasized that the team cannot afford to be complacent. His sentiments echoed those of Mohammed Kudus.

“One thing is for sure, it’s going to be a very difficult game. For everyone who thinks it’s going to be easy, we hope it goes like that, but it’s really a difficult game,” Addo told the press on Sunday.

“We can’t relax now,” added the former Borussia Dortmund head coach.

2026 WCQ: Andre Ayew deserves to be in Black Stars squad for Mali, CAR games – Boateng https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-andre-ayew-deserves-to-be-in-black-stars-squad-for-mali-car-games-boateng/ Sun, 09 Jun 2024 16:57:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2406811 Former Black Stars midfielder, Derek Boateng believes that Andre Ayew should have been included in Otto Addo’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Despite his impressive form in the French Ligue 1, the Black Stars captain was left out of the 26-man squad for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Boateng, who played alongside Ayew in the 2010 World Cup said the Le Havre attacker deserved a spot in the squad for these crucial games.

“For me, if you talk about players in good shape at their club level right now, he is one of them,” Boateng said.

“A player like Dede Ayew has to be in the team even if you’re not starting him. His influence in the national team is significant. Some of the players are very close to him and they listen to him a lot. I respect the coach’s decision, but for me, he has to be in the squad,” he added.

The 34-year-old Ayew scored five goals and played a crucial role in helping Le Havre avoid relegation in the French Ligue 1. Ayew is Ghana’s most-capped player, with 120 appearances since his debut in 2007.

The Black Stars are set to face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday for matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

They currently sit in third place after a 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako.

According to a statement released by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday, the match is scheduled for June 10, 2024, at 19:00 Hrs.

“Ghana will face Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Monday, June 10, 2024,” the statement said.

The announcement comes after concerns were raised that Ghana might have to relocate the match due to issues with the stadium.

Last month, a CAF inspection team reportedly expressed dissatisfaction after visiting the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Ghana was subsequently instructed to address certain issues at the stadium or risk losing approval to use it for CAF international matches.

Following the Ghana FA’s notice, it appears that all the raised concerns have been addressed.

Before facing CAR, the Black Stars will play Mali in their Matchday three games in Bamako.

Ghana must secure victories in both matches next month to improve their chances of qualifying for the World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Currently, after two games, the Black Stars are in 4th place in Group I with three points, having won against Madagascar and suffered a defeat against Comoros.

Most of the 300 people on board were on their way to a funeral on Friday when the vessel sank.

It happened on the Mpoko River near the capital, Bangui.

Footage of the accident on social media shows people falling or jumping into the water trying to reach the banks of the river.

Boat disasters are not uncommon in the Central African Republic.

“What just happened was terrifying,” a witness told French-language broadcaster RFI.

“I know a family who’ve lost seven relatives in this tragedy.”

Speaking to local station Radio Guira on Saturday, civil protection head Thomas Djimasse said rescuers retrieved “58 lifeless bodies” from the water, but added “we don’t know the total number of people who are underwater”.

Dozens of survivors are reported to be receiving treatment in hospitals in Bangui.

I knew we will win – Jordan Ayew after Ghana’s victory over CAR https://www.adomonline.com/i-knew-we-will-win-jordan-ayew-after-ghanas-victory-over-car/ Fri, 08 Sep 2023 10:10:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2292047 Ghana striker, Jordan Ayew has said he knew they would win the match despite conceding an early goal against the Central African Republic (CAR).

Louis Mafouta broke the deadlock for the away side at the Baba Yara Stadium in the final Group E game on Thursday.

However, goals from Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah ensured Ghana recorded a 2-1 win to secure qualification for the tournament.

Speaking after the game, Jordan Ayew who captained the team said he was proud of the team for securing qualification to the next AFCON.

He also added that, he knew the team would stage a comeback in the game after conceding the first goal.

“Football sometimes does not go the way you want it. You can go one nil down but we still have 70 minutes to play. You never have to give up that has been my way of thinking and I try to transfer it on to the boys,” Jordan Ayew said.

“At 1-0 down I was still confident because you struggle to get into the game, things are not going your way but you still have to keep pushing. Even before the game, I told them that even if we are 1-0 down, we still have to keep pushing until we get the first goal and win the game. That is the beauty of football, it’s full of emotions. We are proud we won because the important thing is to qualify,” he added.

Ghana finished their group with 12 points. The Black Stars will discover their group opponents on October 12.
