Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Carbonu said he is not surprised by the outcome.

He pointed to the double-track system as a major factor affecting learning continuity.

“The double-track system is hugely to blame for the poor performance we are seeing this year. Students go to school for a few weeks and then have to go home because another group has to take over. Where do we run our education like this?” he asked.

He also disclosed the lack of a structured school calendar as a problem.

“We haven’t created an environment where a child knows exactly when school starts and ends, even during holidays. This uncertainty affects learning outcomes.”

On the grading system, Mr. Carbonu explained that variations in results over the years are expected.

“Our education system can decide to award 65 A’s in one exam, 70 in another, and 80 in another. The grading is not stagnant. For what I know, this year’s results are a true reflection of students’ academic performance, considering all the factors,” he said.

He dismissed claims that teachers failed to teach or that results were manipulated.

“I don’t have any reason to believe teachers didn’t do their part or that someone tampered with the results. The truth is, this is the actual performance level of our students.”

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed a national concern following the release of the provisional 2025 WASSCE results, which showed a worrying increase in the outright failure rate (Grade F9) across all four core subjects compared to the 2024 results.

But Mr. Carbonu concluded by urging stakeholders to reflect on the systemic issues in education.

“We have to blame ourselves as a country. If children go to school for only a few weeks or months due to the double-track system, this is exactly what we should expect in their results,” he stressed.

NAGRAT President reacts to CAGD delays in allowances [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/nagrat-president-reacts-to-cagd-delays-in-allowances-listen/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 11:31:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2604140 The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has expressed disappointment over the delayed payment of certain allowances for teachers.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Carbonu said he was frustrated that assurances given to NAGRAT last week had not been honored.

According to him, the collective agreement clearly states that the payment was supposed to be made in November.

He warned that the delay could cause anger among members, stressing that the payment is for a specific purpose and not a Christmas or end-of-year bonus.

“According to our collective agreement, this payment was supposed to be made in November—it’s in the official document. We have informed our members, and now they are bound to be frustrated. This is not a Christmas or end-of-year package. This payment serves a specific purpose, and we deserve honesty and fairness” he said.

He also criticized the government’s communication, noting that the official release about the delay only reached him recently.

“If there is a problem, at least let us know in advance. Even the official release reached me only this morning. Our members think we are being irresponsible, but that’s not the case—they don’t know what is happening. We have made plans based on the assurances given” he stated.

The comments follow an announcement from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) that two major categories of allowances expected this month could not be processed due to a “technical hitch” during the final payroll run.

In a statement signed by Cephas N. Dosco, Head of Public Relations at CAGD, the department explained that the glitch occurred at a critical stage of payroll processing, forcing the immediate suspension of the affected allowances to prevent delays in November salaries for all government workers.

CAGD assured that the issue is being corrected, particularly for workers in the education sector who form a large portion of the beneficiaries.

Review operations of schools inspectorate agency – NAGRAT tells Gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/review-operations-of-schools-inspectorate-agency-nagrat-tells-govt/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 16:44:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2424996 The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called for the dissolution and review of the National Schools Inspectorate Agency (NASIA).

According to NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu, NASIA has failed to oversee the upgrading of school infrastructure and standards despite collecting fees from private schools.

Parliament recently passed the new Education Act 2020, Act 1023, which aims to establish regulatory bodies for the education sector.

These bodies are expected to formulate national policies to improve education in the country.

NASIA is one such body, tasked with supervising infrastructure upgrades and maintaining standards in schools.

Mr. Carbonu suggested that the government should dissolve NASIA immediately due to its lack of collaboration with teacher unions.

In an interview with Adom News, he stressed the need for a review of NASIA’s entire concept, as it has not achieved its intended purpose and teacher unions have not had the opportunity to address educational challenges with the authority, thus hindering efforts to maintain school standards.

Mr. Carbonu also criticized the Ministry of Education for not recruiting qualified educationists for NASIA.

“We need to examine the qualifications and competencies of those running NASIA to determine whether they are adequately suited to inspect education,” he said.

Mr. Carbonu has called for an immediate review of NASIA’s operations to achieve better results.
