The Crystal Palace forward takes over the leadership role from his elder brother, Andre Ayew, who has been left out of the 23-man squad for the crucial matches.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey, who captained the team in their previous qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, has reportedly declined any leadership role within the squad.

Ayew, a key figure in the Black Stars setup, will lead the team as they push for vital points in their quest for World Cup qualification after missing out on the 2025 AFCON tournament.

Ghana will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on Monday, March 24.

The Black Stars are currently second in Group I with nine points, level with leaders Comoros. The squad will open camp on Monday, March 17, to begin preparations.

I was alone as Black Stars captain – Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-alone-as-black-stars-captain-asamoah-gyan/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 12:38:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489702 Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he often felt isolated during his time as captain of the Black Stars.

Gyan, who holds the record as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, said he lacked the backing of his teammates and faced challenges due to internal team dynamics.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, the former Sunderland and Udinese striker explained that younger players were often influenced to view him negatively.

“A young player would come to the national team only wanting to see me, but their attitude towards me would change in a few days due to what people have told them,” Gyan said.

“So during my tenure as captain with the team, I was alone and only delivered on the field because players had been brainwashed,” he added.

Gyan captained the Black Stars from 2012 to 2019, leading the team through four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Chelsea confirm Reece James as new club captain https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-confirm-reece-james-as-new-club-captain/ Thu, 10 Aug 2023 11:24:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2282139 Chelsea have named Reece James as their new club captain ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

The England international, 23, replaces Cesar Azpilicueta, who left the Blues on a free transfer to join Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

James is a product of the Chelsea academy and has been with the west London club since the age of six.

New Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino told the official website: “This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

“He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.”

Meanwhile, James added: “I’m so happy to take on the role and responsibility.

“I know I’ve got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.

“I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family.”

Bruno Fernandes should not captain Manchester United again – Chris Sutton https://www.adomonline.com/bruno-fernandes-should-not-captain-manchester-united-again-chris-sutton/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 16:33:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2225272 Bruno Fernandes should not captain Manchester United again following Sunday’s humiliating 7-0 defeat by Liverpool, says Chris Sutton.

The Portuguese, who deputises in the absence of club captain Harry Maguire, was criticised for his behaviour and attitude in the game.

“There are people that are far better qualified to be captain,” Sutton said.

“Fernandes is not their best leader. There are more suitable candidates than him, Casemiro being one.”

Speaking on BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, former Premier League striker Sutton, who also suggested Raphael Varane as another option, added: “I think he should never put on the armband again for Manchester United.”

Fernandes, 28, has 57 goals and 50 assists in 166 games for the club in all competitions, but his body language at Anfield was called “disgraceful” by former United captain Roy Keane, while another former skipper Gary Neville said he was “embarrassing at times”.

He also appeared to push the referee’s assistant in the 81st minute. No action was taken by the referee at the time and the incident is not being investigated by the Football Association

BBC Sport has also been told he did not ask to be substituted towards the end of the match after questions were asked about a gesture he made to the bench.

At one point, when Liverpool’s Stefan Bajcetic went past him by the touchline, Fernandes stopped rather than giving chase to the midfielder.

“That was a standout moment,” added Sutton.

“However bad United were, you cannot just let someone run away from you and give up. That’s what the captain of Manchester United did – and that’s a bad look.

“I don’t think he has any real arguments if he does get stripped of the captaincy,” he added. “I think Bruno’s days have to be numbered.”

The defeat came seven days after Manchester United won the Carabao Cup – their first trophy since Erik Ten Hag’s arrival as manager last May.

They are third in the Premier League and have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, as well as the last 16 of the Europa League.

Ten Hag, who described his side’s performance against rivals Liverpool as “unprofessional”, dropped the in-form Marcus Rashford earlier this season after the striker missed a team meeting, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated by mutual consent in November.

“The way Ten Hag has dealt with Rashford, Ronaldo, it’s a situation he needs to get a grip of,” added Sutton. “Ten Hag has no option but to let him know who is boss.”

On the United captaincy, football journalist Rory Smith said: “Fernandes is a fighter, he has a win-at-all-costs mentality. To me he looks petulant and whiny, but maybe to other players they just see that as he is desperate to win.”

Smith added: “As much as Bruno was the most eye-catching shortfall, I would query what happened to Casemiro and also Ten Hag’s substitutions. There were more failures than just Bruno Fernandes.”

Appiah to strip Gyan of Ghana captaincy? https://www.adomonline.com/appiah-strip-gyan-ghana-captaincy/ Fri, 17 Nov 2017 08:30:58 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=674781 The Black Stars coach discloses how he intends to put to bed controversies over the team’s captaincy.
Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah has revealed plans to rotate the national team’s captaincy.
A notorious trouble spot and divisive element over the years, the leadership of the Black Stars has never been short of controversies.
Current skipper Asamoah Gyan and deputy Andre Ayew are the latest to have followed the trend as the duo have reportedly fallen out due to issues surrounding the armband.
“Gyan is the captain until I decide to change him,” Appiah told Metro TV.
“But maybe I will consider rotating it like you said, to take away the pressure and controversy that comes with it.
“I always tell my players to be captains of their positions.
“Players are at their best when you give them responsibilities.”
In the absence of Gyan and Ayew, who were both absent in Ghana’s last five games, the captain’s armband rotated around three different men.
Columbus Crew right-back Harrison Afful led the team in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Congo in Brazzaville in September, before Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey assumed the position for the next two games against Uganda and Saudi Arabia last month.
In Sunday’s clash with Egypt, Alaves midfielder Mubarak Wakaso was handed the privilege.

Hot Audio: ‘Captain Mahama’s murder is spiritual’ https://www.adomonline.com/hot-audio-captain-mahamas-murder-spiritual/ https://www.adomonline.com/hot-audio-captain-mahamas-murder-spiritual/#comments Tue, 30 May 2017 17:27:29 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=143311 Renowned Ghanaian hip-life musician, Kofi B, known in real life as Eric Kofi Boakye Yiadom has said lynching of a military office, Captain Maxwell Mahama is spiritual.

He explained that, his death[Maxwell] was planned in the spiritual realm but the mob was used to accomplish the mission the physically.

The late Captain Maxwell Mahama was killed at Denkyira Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region on suspicion of being an armed robber.

Captain Mahama, who is the commander of the area military detachment according to his subordinates, was seen jogging along the main road and as he stopped by to ask some women for directions, the women saw a pistol on him.

The women who were alarmed by the discovery of the pistol on Captain Mahama mistook him for an armed robber thereby alerting their assembly member who allegedly organized some men to fatally lynch him and even burnt him in the process.

But speaking in an exclusive interview on Adom FM’s ‘Work and Happiness’ with show host Ohemaa Woyeje, Kofi B said the brutal killing is not normal.

“The soldier was murdered by the mob. Some people might think it is a normal physical happening. But one might be surprised to know it has a spiritual backing. Some people might want you dead but might use such means to operate to level the implications…” he said.

He indicated everyone can be a culprit in such matters hence it is only the fear of God that can save one out of such occurrences.

He, however, condemned the actions of the residents and urged Ghanaians to pray against such evil acts from happening in the country.

“With this, I think we should be afraid of God on the daily since it can happen to anyone at any time. We are all subjected to such things. We should fear God and pray such never happens anymore. I don’t understand. How can people even do that…?” he queried.

Mahama lynching: ‘Don’t desert your homes’ – GAF to residents https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-lynching-dont-desert-homes-gaf-residents/ Tue, 30 May 2017 16:27:41 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=143231 The Ghana Armed Forces has urged residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region not to flee their homes in the wake of the killing of Captain Maxwell A. Mahama by townsfolk in a mob attack.

The Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Armed Forces, Col. Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, has said rather than fleeing the town, the residents should assist investigators to identify the perpetrators of this incident.

Captain Mahama was lynched by irate youth of the community on suspicion that he was an armed robber after a group of residents from whom he asked for directions during a Monday dawn jogging session spotted a pistol on him.

The community on Tuesday 30 May turned into a ghost town as residents fled from soldiers sent there to investigate the circumstances leading to the murder of their colleague. Reports said the soldiers were allegedly arresting and beating up residents.

But speaking on this development on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday May 30, Col. Aggrey-Quarshie said: “I have not been there but I will tell the people that there is no need for anybody abandoning his home. These who led the mob to kill the young man are the people we expect the community to help us arrest.

“It will not be right for anybody to go there and say because one of our members has been killed we are also here to beat you people. What about if the people you beat up also die? Will that bring back the soldier to life?”

Meanwhile, several youth of the community have been rounded up by military men who have stormed the town.

Mahama’s lynching: No one will go free – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-lynching-no-one-will-go-free-akufo-addo/ Tue, 30 May 2017 14:43:16 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=142971 President Akufo-Addo has commiserated with the family of the military officer grisly murdered in Denkyira Boase in the Central Region, pledging to hound the perpetrators.

The officer named as Captain Maxwell Mahama was lynched by residents of the Denkyira Boase Township on suspicion of being an armed robber. He was a military officer with the 5th Infantry Batallion (5BN) at Burma Camp in Accra but on detachment duties there where he met his untimely death.

Capt. Mahama who is the commander of the area military detachment, according to his subordinates, was seen jogging along the main road and as he stopped by to ask some women for directions, the women saw a pistol on him.

Alarmed by the pistol on him, the women mistook him for an armed robber thereby alerting their assembly member who allegedly organised some men to lynch him and even burnt him in the process.

Their action is said to have been influenced by recent robbery attacks in the area with a recent one being a day before as the people in the mining town have been subjected to some serious robbery attacks.

Capt. Mahama was not in uniform when the incident happened.

Distraught by the news of the gruesome murder of the young capt. Akufo-Addo in a series of tweets assured that:

“No one involved in his murder will go free,” President Akufo-Addo said in a tweet on Tuesday as he consoles the family of Captain Mahama “on their tragic loss”.

“I assure them that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the laws of our country,” he promised.
