Camilla appeared before the court on Thursday, July 16, where she admitted to the charges before the sentence was handed down.

The prosecution told the court that the TikToker published several videos on social media containing false and offensive allegations against the President, including an unsubstantiated claim that he buried 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

Court documents also outlined a series of other allegations she made online. These included claims that President Mahama had committed sexual offences, fathered a child as a result of excessive alcohol consumption, was responsible for the deaths of former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, and used abusive language against the President.

Prosecutors said the allegations were published without evidence and were capable of causing harm to the reputations of the individuals involved.

Following her guilty plea to all the charges, the Accra Circuit Court sentenced Camilla Alhassan to 12 months’ imprisonment.

The case has drawn significant public attention and reignited discussions about responsible use of social media, misinformation and the legal consequences of publishing defamatory or false content online.

Speaking after the sentencing, Camilla’s brother pleaded for mercy, describing his sister as the family’s breadwinner and saying her imprisonment would have a devastating impact on those who depend on her.

According to him, although his sister had admitted wrongdoing, she deserved an opportunity to reform rather than face prolonged incarceration.

“She is human, and human beings make mistakes,” he said, urging the authorities to temper justice with mercy.

He also revealed that Camilla has a young child who currently has no one to care for, as he pleaded for the welfare of the child to be taken into consideration.

He disclosed that he is an active member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and serves as a youth organiser in his Zongo community, stressing that his appeal was not political but a heartfelt plea for compassion.

Camilla Alhassan was sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news over a series of social media videos targeting President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking after the proceedings, the lawyer confirmed that the Accra Circuit Court sentenced Camilla to one year in prison after convicting her of offensive conduct.

According to him, the court first struck out the charge of electronic abuse, ruling that it lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter because the offence falls outside the mandate of a District Court.

The lawyer said the conviction was therefore based solely on the charge of offensive conduct.

He explained that under the law, the offence is a misdemeanour, which carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment. However, after the defence pleaded in mitigation, the court imposed a one-year custodial sentence instead.

He added that in delivering its ruling, the court indicated that offences involving offensive and false publications have become increasingly common and that the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others who may engage in similar conduct.
