It looked like the visitors were heading for a comfortable win after goals from Damsgaard, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade inside 34 minutes but Burnley dragged them back into the game.

Jaidon Anthony initiated the comeback as his driven cross was turned into his own goal by Michael Kayode in the dying seconds of the first half, before another strike from Anthony was helped on its way into the goal by Kayode less than two minutes after the restart.

Zian Flemming then restored parity for the second-from-bottom Clarets by powering a header past Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson in the 60th minute, turning the half-time boos from the Burnley supporters into a surge of renewed belief.

The hosts thought they had claimed all three points when Flemming, who scored late in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea last week, bundled home in the 78th minute only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee (VAR).

But it was Damsgaard who made the all-important contribution in the game as he scored the stoppage-time winner from a Rico Henry cross.

There was a final twist in the tale as Ashley Barnes sent Turf Moor into raptures with a 99th-minute goal, only for it to be ruled out for an accidental handball by the Burnley striker in the build-up after a lengthy VAR check.

With the win, Keith Andrews’ side strengthened their push for European football and sit seventh in the table with 43 points – only two less than Chelsea above them and five behind fifth-placed Liverpool – while Burnley remain 19th with 19 points.

Burnley snatch draw against 10-man Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-snatch-draw-against-10-man-chelsea/ Sat, 21 Feb 2026 11:09:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633475 Burnley striker Zian Flemming pounced in stoppage time to snatch a 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Flemming headed in from a James Ward‑Prowse corner in the 93rd minute after Chelsea had lost control of the match following Wesley Fofana’s red card.

The hosts had dominated until the defender’s 72nd‑minute dismissal, having taken the lead through Joao Pedro in the fourth minute.

But there will be an inquest, as Chelsea have dropped a league‑high 19 points from winning positions this season. They also have six red cards – more than any other team in the Premier League and eight in all competitions.

It looked as though it would be plain sailing for Chelsea after Joao Pedro bundled in Pedro Neto’s cross from close range in the fourth minute.

Cole Palmer nearly capitalised on a mistake by Kyle Walker on the halfway line but failed to lift his shot over Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, with two further efforts in the half also blocked.

Burnley’s only real chance in the first half came when Lesley Ugochukwu volleyed over from a corner awarded under a new rule which penalised Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for holding on to the ball for more than eight seconds.

After the interval, Joao Pedro had another effort blocked by former Chelsea defender Bashir Humphreys before heading over from a corner in the 66th minute.

Burnley had not registered a second-half shot before Fofana received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute, having been earlier booked for a late challenge on Hannibal Mejbri.

Four minutes later, Josh Laurent forced a save from Sanchez, as Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior brought on defenders, while Scott Parker introduced attackers in search of an equaliser.

Flemming was unmarked when he headed his dramatic leveller, and substitute Jacob Bruun Larsen missed a similar chance minutes later, with Chelsea supporters booing their team off after the final whistle.

Chelsea move up to fourth in the Premier League table, having played a game more than Manchester United, but fail to close the gap on Aston Villa who drew against Leeds. Burnley remain second bottom, eight points adrift of safety.

Liverpool held to frustrating draw by strugglers Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-held-to-frustrating-draw-by-strugglers-burnley/ Sat, 17 Jan 2026 17:57:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620540 Marcus Edwards scored a second-half equaliser as Liverpool were held to a frustrating Premier League draw by struggling Burnley at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz gave Arne Slot’s side the lead in the first half with an emphatic strike, 10 minutes after Dominik Szoboszlai had hit the bar from the penalty spot.

Liverpool dominated possession throughout but failed to take their chances, with the hosts having 32 shots and Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka making eight saves.

And Edwards punished the home side with a superb finish past Alisson in the 65th minute after he was played through by Florentino Luis.

Liverpool pushed hard for a late winner but could not find a second goal and this will go down as two points dropped against a side who are 19th in the table.

Saturday’s result extended the Reds’ unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions, although this was a fourth straight league draw.

A point takes Liverpool one clear of Manchester United in fourth, but Slot’s side missed the chance to cut the gap to second-placed Manchester City and Aston Villa in third to five points.

Burnley remain winless in their past 13 league games but this draw would have felt like a win. The Clarets are still deep in the relegation zone but a point at Anfield could do wonders for their confidence.

Chelsea ease past Burnley to go second in table https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-ease-past-burnley-to-go-second-in-table/ Sat, 22 Nov 2025 08:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2602755 Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez delivered a comfortable 2-0 win at Burnley to lift Chelsea to second in the Premier League.

The opener came when Neto met Jamie Gittens’ cross at the far post, while Fernandez sealed victory with a late run into the box after a counter-attack involving Neto and substitute Marc Guiu.

The Blues rarely moved out of second gear during the 90 minutes and were able to rest unused substitute Moises Caicedo, with matches against Barcelona and Arsenal to come.

However, resting players looked a gamble early on as Burnley started brightly, with Jaidon Anthony having two early shots blocked and Loum Tchaouna forcing a save from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with a strike from the edge of the box.

Chelsea started slowly and tested Burnley keeper Martin Dubvravka with a tame long-range effort from Trevoh Chalobah.

But after Neto’s header put them ahead they took control, withdrawing captain Reece James at half-time yet growing increasingly dominant.

Neto struck a post soon after the interval, while substitute Malo Gusto saw a shot saved amid further attempts from Joao Pedro, Gittens, Fernandez and Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea’s second-half display was largely about game management as they gave little away and dominated possession, finishing with about 60%.

In-form striker Zian Flemming fired Burnley’s only second-half chance over, 30 minutes after his side’s previous effort, and substitutes Lyle Foster and Armando Broja could not inspire a comeback.

After Chelsea made several changes of their own, young striker Guiu provided Fernandez with a cutback to turn home the second goal.

Burnley remain 17th in the table and could drop into the relegation zone later on Saturday, with Nottingham Forest and West Ham still to play.

Chelsea climbed to second, having played a game more than their rivals.

Arsenal win at Burnley to go seven points clear https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-win-at-burnley-to-go-seven-points-clear/ Sat, 01 Nov 2025 08:19:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2595131 Premier League leaders Arsenal continued their impressive start to the season with a comfortable win at Burnley to make it nine consecutive victories in all competitions.

Goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice sealed the win – their fifth in a row in the league – as Mikel Arteta’s side moved seven points clear at the top, albeit having played a game more than some of their rivals.

It was an impressive victory against a Burnley side that can often prove difficult to break down and had recorded back-to-back victories before facing the Gunners.

But no side has scored more goals from set-pieces than Arsenal this season and it was from one that they took the lead, Gyokeres firing in from close range from Rice’s corner.

Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka produced a one-handed save to deny Bukayo Saka, before Leandro Trossard had an effort cleared off the line.

But Arsenal got their second before the break when Rice powerfully headed in Trossard’s chipped ball.

Burnley saw more of the ball after the break and went close to getting a goal back when Florentino Luis headed over from close range, before Marcus Edwards struck the post from a free-kick with the last action of the match.

That late chance aside it was largely a trouble-free afternoon for Arsenal as they recorded an eighth win in 10 Premier League games this season.

Defeat for Burnley means they are 17th, four points clear of the bottom three.

Villa extend winning run as Malen double sinks Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/villa-extend-winning-run-as-malen-double-sinks-burnley/ Sun, 05 Oct 2025 12:44:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2585457 Donyell Malen scored twice as improving Aston Villa stretched their winning run to four matches in all competitions with victory over struggling Burnley.

Having created several early opportunities to take the lead at Villa Park, Unai Emery’s side eventually got their noses in front when Boubacar Kamara’s defence-splitting pass released Malen, who found the bottom corner.

It was the Dutchman’s first goal of the season, having last netted at Southampton in April.

Returning Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who pulled out of Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League win over Feyenoord with a calf problem, produced a marvellous one-handed save to tip Josh Cullen’s low shot away as Burnley sought a reply.

Villa remained on top, though, and felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Morgan Rogers went to ground under the challenge of Axel Tuanzebe, but referee Andrew Kitchen waved away protests for a pull on the England midfielder.

The second half was a more subdued affair, but the hosts deservedly doubled their advantage in the 63rd-minute when Malen – who was about to be taken off – slammed Rogers’ pass into the far corner for his second of the afternoon.

Lesley Ugochukwu nodded home his first Burnley goal to reduce the arrears with 12 minutes left, but Emery’s men held on to clinch back-to-back league successes after their winless start to the campaign.

Villa are in 13th spot, while Scott Parker’s side are third from bottom after a fifth game without a league victory.

Haaland scores twice as Man City see off Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/haaland-scores-twice-as-man-city-see-off-burnley/ Sat, 27 Sep 2025 16:34:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583112 Erling Haaland scored twice late on and Maxime Esteve inadvertently scored two own goals to help Manchester City to a thumping Premier League victory over Burnley.

Pep Guardiola’s side were questioned after losing back-to-back games in August, but have responded by winning three and drawing one to return to form and climb up to fourth in the table.

They were given a huge helping hand by French defender Esteve, who scored the first of his unfortunate double by miscuing an attempted clearance into his own net, the goal coming after Jeremy Doku’s low effort was pushed out by Martin Dubravka.

City were controlling the contest. Belgium winger Doku has started the season brightly and he forced the Burnley goalkeeper into a sharp save at his near post.

Having been made to defend for most parts of the first half, Scott Parker’s side unexpectedly equalised, with the in-form Jaidon Anthony scuffing in a finish via a deflection off Ruben Dias.

Boosted by the goal, Burnley were out quickly in the second half and Lyle Foster’s low shot was deflected narrowly wide, with Quilindschy Hartman’s long-range drive being batted away by City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But the visitors were made to pay for those near misses as Matheus Nunes superbly smashed home a volley from Haaland’s knock-down.

Minutes later Nunes turned provider by playing a low cross into the area and, although Oscar Bobb poked an effort at goal, the last touch came off Esteve.

But Haaland was not to be denied, converting twice in the closing stages to continue his prolific start to the campaign.

Kyle Walker’s bold new chapter: From glory to grit https://www.adomonline.com/kyle-walkers-bold-new-chapter-from-glory-to-grit/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 07:15:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583028 After a storied career defined by unprecedented success at Manchester City, England international Kyle Walker is now taking on a new, high-stakes challenge at Burnley.

In a revealing interview, the defender has candidly admitted to a deep-seated regret over his departure from the Etihad, a move that came after he amassed a staggering 16 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League.

While embracing his new role at Turf Moor, Walker reflects on the past with a fresh perspective and unwavering honesty.

“I look back and I think, ‘should I have left?’ I was the club captain and you’re the first in line when things weren’t going well,” Walker reflected. “Looking back at it now, probably no, I should have stood next to my teammates and my friends and people I class as my family.”

The decision to leave was, by his own admission, a rare moment of selfishness in a career defined by a team-first mentality.

At the time, he was a club captain facing reduced playing time, a situation that challenged his desire to remain a vital part of the on-field action.

“For the first time probably in my career, I was selfish and I thought about myself. I wanted to play football. I don’t see it as a bad reason, but I wasn’t happy sitting on the bench and getting a game here and there whenever I could.”

His time at City was about more than just football; it was about the deep bonds forged with the entire club ecosystem.

“It’s tough because you’re not just leaving the football,” he said. “I’m leaving friends, and that’s not even just the lads; I’m leaving the kitchen staff, the physios, the kitmen. I know them, and they know me inside out. That’s not a player who’s just going to sit there and say, ‘I’m getting old, but I’m playing for a top club, sit on the bench and take your medicine.’ That’s not me. I’d rather go to somewhere that I know there’s going to be competition for places and I’m going to play football.”

That desire to play and prove himself led him to Burnley, a club fighting for its place in the top flight, and a challenge Walker embraces with a fire he hasn’t felt in years.

When asked why Burnley, he simply replied, “Why not?”

He sees the fight for Premier League survival not just as a job, but as a quest for a different kind of prize.

“This is like a trophy for me. If we survive this, I’ll count this as 17. Like you just said there, 16. This will be 17 for me just because of people writing us off and thinking that we won’t have a chance.”

Walker’s motivation is deeply personal, stemming from a lifelong desire to prove his doubters wrong.

“I love proving people wrong. I’ve done it my whole life, and when people doubt me, it just gives me some fuel,” he said. “I’ll just keep going until I break you, and then I’d say, ‘Look, I’ve proved you wrong.’ Yeah, that’s just me as a person. Write me off. Okay, I’ll just keep going.”

His arrival brings a wealth of experience to a young, hungry squad.

Walker has quickly taken on a leadership role, setting the standard for his teammates.

“I hope I’m leading and I hope I’m showing them that there’s standards to meet every day,” he said. “You don’t take your foot off the gas because people smell weakness. They’re going to tread all over you in this league.”

Beyond the club, Walker still has personal goals, chief among them reaching 100 caps for England.

Currently on 96, he sees it as a monumental personal achievement.

“I’m quite content now that if it was 96 and it was out, it’s kind of like, okay, I gave it a good bash. I gave it all I could,” he said, referencing the difficult decision he considered to retire after the EURO 2020 final loss. “The four is something I want to get to as something personal for myself just to say I’m the second Black player to get 100 caps.”

The move to Burnley also represents a homecoming of sorts.

Walker already had a “soft spot” for the club due to his son playing there and his long-standing friendship with manager Vincent Kompany.

“The club kind of sold itself to me,” he said, citing his frequent visits to the training ground.

He also looks forward to a poignant return to the Etihad, a place he still considers “home from home” despite wearing the opposing colours.

Ultimately, Walker’s move is a testament to his enduring passion for the game and his refusal to settle. He is a professional with a new job to do.

“My time with City is… you close that book and you move on and open another book, and this is my new journey now. When I step over that line, I’m representing the Burnley colours, and I want to win, and I’ll do anything to win.”

He finished with a confident assertion about the team’s chances: “I think we stay up. I believe honestly that there are worse teams than us in the league.”

Walker’s transition from a dominant force at a winning machine to a key leader in a relegation battle is a bold and captivating move, one that will test his grit and cement his legacy in a whole new way.

Last-gasp Salah penalty gives Liverpool dramatic win over Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/last-gasp-salah-penalty-gives-liverpool-dramatic-win-over-burnley/ Sun, 14 Sep 2025 15:31:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578358 Mohamed Salah’s dramatic stoppage-time penalty ensured Liverpool maintained their winning start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory at promoted side Burnley on Sunday.

With British record signing Alexander Isak forced to wait for his Liverpool debut having been left out the squad for the trip to Lancashire, the champions struggled to break down a dogged home side in the first half.

After a regroup at the break, the visitors upped the ante in the second half, with Dominik Szoboszlai finally forcing a fine save from Martin Dubravka in the Burnley goal.

Burnley were holding on for a well-earned point with ease, before the ball agonisingly struck substitute Hannibal Mejbri’s arm in the penalty area and Salah slotted the spot kick into the net in the 95th minute to break home hearts.

Liverpool are still to really get going this season, requiring a winner in the last 10 minutes of all four of their league victories so far. The goal that clinched an undeserved success at Turf Moor was certainly the most fortunate.

After one of the longest transfer sagas in Premier League history finally reached its expected conclusion, Liverpool supporters were forced to wait two weeks for their first glimpse of their 125-million-pound ($169.45-million) goal machine due to the international break.

While coach Arne Slot said this week that Isak would have to be utilised carefully due to his previous injuries and lack of action so far this season, the Swede was still expected to at least be on the bench at Turf Moor.

The wait goes on as, without their expensive new forward, Liverpool mustered just one shot on target in the first half, from left-back Andrew Robertson.

Burnley, who conceded the fewest goals in English football league history last term to earn them promotion, otherwise frustrated the champions with ease. Even Lesley Ugochukwu’s red card for two bookings in the 84th minute did not seem to fluster them.

Even without Isak, Liverpool still had much attacking talent on the Turf Moor pitch but they just could not find that killer pass.

Salah was especially below par but he made no mistake in the most pressurised moment after Hannibal had stuck up an arm to block Jeremie Frimpong’s cross.

The champions’ impressive Premier League goalscoring streak stretches to 38 games nonetheless, their longest such run in the competition.

Fernandes injury-time penalty gives Man Utd victory over Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/fernandes-injury-time-penalty-gives-man-utd-victory-over-burnley/ Sat, 30 Aug 2025 17:02:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573097 Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes kept his nerve to convert an injury-time penalty and give Ruben Amorim’s side a priceless victory against Burnley at Old Trafford.

United’s continuing goalkeeping woes looked set to cost them three points after another blunder from Altay Bayindir gifted Jaidon Anthony a second equaliser of the day for the Clarets.

But Anthony went from hero to villain for Scott Parker’s men as the contest entered stoppage time.

Trying to halt Amad’s run into the penalty area, Anthony grabbed the Ivorian’s shirt. At first the contact was outside the box, but it continued as Amad ran into it.

Although referee Sam Barrott initially waved away the penalty claims, video assistant referre (VAR) Stuart Attwell asked for the official to review his decision.

It took Barrott four minutes to give the penalty, announce his decision to the crowd and clear the penalty area of Burnley players.

Fernandes – who missed from the spot at Fulham six days earlier – kept his cool before taking a deep breath and finding the bottom corner.

The 25-year-old, who joined Spurs from West Ham United during the summer transfer window, registered two assists on his debut as the Europa League champions eased past Burnley 3-0.

Speaking after the match, Kudus expressed delight at the positive beginning but stressed that he is focused on continuous improvement.

“I am really glad to be in an environment like this with a high level of work and competitiveness to challenge for every trophy,” he said.

“With the help of the team, they’ve really helped me settle in quite well. I still have a lot to improve, a lot to show more,” Kudus told the Tottenham media team.

Kudus will look to build on his debut performance when Tottenham face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next weekend.

The Ghana international, who joined Spurs from West Ham United over the summer, started his first match for the club and wasted little time making his mark.

In the 10th minute, his precise cross found Brazilian forward Richarlison, who converted to give Tottenham a 1-0 lead at halftime.

After the break, Kudus again set up Richarlison, who finished with a spectacular acrobatic effort to double the advantage. Brennan Johnson then wrapped up the scoring in the 66th minute, securing a comprehensive 3-0 win.

Kudus was substituted in the 85th minute for French international Mathys Tel, leaving the field to applause for his influential performance.

The dynamic attacker will now hope to earn another starting role when Spurs travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City next weekend.

Burnley sign Walker from Man City in £5m deal https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-sign-walker-from-man-city-in-5m-deal/ Fri, 04 Jul 2025 12:10:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551803 Burnley have signed England defender Kyle Walker from Manchester City for a fee of up to £5m.

The right-back completed his medical on Friday and has signed a two-year contract with the Clarets.

The 35-year-old will work again with head coach Scott Parker, with whom he played at Tottenham Hotspur for two seasons.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Walker told Burnley’s website. “I can’t wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad.

“When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He’s done an amazing job here, guiding the club back to the Premier League.”

Walker made 15 appearances in the first half of last season for City before joining AC Milan on loan in January, but the Italian club decided not to make his move permanent.

He won 17 trophies during his time at Etihad Stadium and was part of the squad that won the Treble in 2023.

Walker, who started his career at Sheffield United, signed for City in the summer of 2017 for an initial £45m and made 319 appearances for the club.

Burnley were promoted back to the Premier League last season following their relegation in 2024.

The Clarets creatively announced Walker’s arrival on X, using Popstar Lionel Richie’s music video for his song ‘Hello’.

Walker is their fifth signing of the summer, following the arrival of defender Axel Tuanzebe, left-back Quilindschy Hartman, goalkeeper Max Weiss and French winger Loum Tchaouna.

Leeds and Burnley secure promotion back to the Premier League https://www.adomonline.com/leeds-and-burnley-secure-promotion-back-to-the-premier-league/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 17:00:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527228 Leeds United and Burnley have sealed automatic promotion back to the Premier League after beating Stoke City and Sheffield United respectively in the Championship on Monday.

After beating Stoke City 6-0 earlier in the day, Leeds knew that anything other than a Sheff Utd win in their match at Burnley would seal their top-flight return, while a victory for the Clarets would ensure automatic promotion for both Leeds and Burnley.

Two Josh Brownhill goals earned Burnley a 2-1 victory, confirming Leeds and Burnley as Premier League clubs for the 2025/26 season.

Dutchman Joel Piroe was the star for Leeds, who end a two-season absence from the top flight, after scoring FOUR goals, all in the first half, as Leeds went 5-0 up at the break. The Dutchman’s quadruple puts him first in the race for the Championship Golden Boot with 19 goals, two more than his nearest rival, Norwich City’s Borja Sainz.

Burnley’s win confirms an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation from the competition in 2023/24.

This is the third time Scott Parker has secured promotion with a Championship side, having done so with Fulham in 2019/20, AFC Bournemouth in 2021/22 and now Burnley in 2024/25.

How have Leeds and Burnley secured automatic promotion?

With both Leeds and Burnley winning on Monday, they can no longer be caught by third-placed Sheff Utd or any other team lower in the table.

This is because both clubs have 94 points with only two matches, or six points, left to play for.

So even if Leeds and Burnley lose their final two fixtures, and Sheff Utd win both, the Blades can only reach 92 points.

Current Championship standings*

Team P GD Pts
Leeds 44 +60 94
Burnley 44 +46 94
Sheff Utd 44 +25 86
Sunderland 44 +17 76
Bristol City 44 +8 67
Coventry 44 +5 66
Middlesbrough 44 +10 63
Millwall 44 -1 63
Blackburn 44 +4 62

Who else will be promoted?

One more team from the Championship will also be promoted, via a playoff system. The clubs who finish third to sixth in the Championship after 46 matches will compete for that coveted spot.

The two-legged playoff semi-finals will pit the third-placed team against the side who finished sixth, while the clubs in fourth and fifth will also meet.

The winners of those semi-finals will face each other in the playoff final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 24 May to determine who will join the top two in being promoted to the Premier League.

When will Leeds and Burnley become an official Premier League team?

Leeds and Burnley will be formally confirmed as Premier League teams at the Premier League’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) this summer, when they are both issued with a share certificate.

Their supporters will find out who they will face first in the 2025/26 season, due to start on 16 August, when the fixtures are released at 09:00 BST on Wednesday 18 June.

Fulham sign Burnley midfielder Berge for £25m https://www.adomonline.com/fulham-sign-burnley-midfielder-berge-for-25m/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 10:42:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2437313 Fulham have signed Burnley midfielder Sander Berge in a £25m deal.

The Norway international has penned a five-year deal at Craven Cottage and the club have the option of extending that by a further 12 months.

Fulham will pay an initial £20m for the midfielder, with a further £5m in add-ons.

Berge, 26, joined Burnley from Sheffield United in 2023 and was voted the Clarets’ player of the year as they were relegated to the Championship.

“It feels fantastic,” said Berge.

“It’s been a little bit back and forth the last few weeks, but I’m finally sitting here in the shirt in this beautiful stadium, knowing that my future is here, which feels great.”

The midfielder becomes Fulham’s fourth signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Emile Smith Rowe, Jorge Cuenca and Ryan Sessegnon.

Berge, who played 37 times for Burnley last season, has been left out of both of the Clarets’ Championship fixtures so far this term.

The midfielder has been capped 46 times by Norway.

Fulham host Leicester City on 24 August in their first home match of the Premier League season.

Ronaldinho son would be Burnley ‘project’ signing https://www.adomonline.com/ronaldinho-son-would-be-burnley-project-signing/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 07:56:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2434629 Burnley manager Scott Parker says he understands the excitement around the expected signing of Ronaldinho’s son Joao Mendes – but insists the winger will be a “development prospect”, not a first-team regular.

The Championship club are reportedly putting the finishing touches to a deal which will see the former Barcelona teenager swap the Nou Camp for Turf Moor on what is expected to be a two-year deal.

While the Burnley manager admitted he understood the buzz about the 19-year-old given his father’s achievements in the game, he has urged perspective regarding his prospects.

“This is a player we see as a development player and a project in that sense,” said Parker before Burnley’s home game against Cardiff this weekend.

“As of right now the paperwork has not been signed but there is definitely something in it for sure.

“I get the excitement around it but I think it would be unfair to heap a huge amount of pressure on a young boy coming here.

“He knows why he is coming here in terms of development so I wouldn’t want to heap more pressure than that which is already on him.”

Mendes came through Cruzeiro’s academy in Brazil before signing for Barcelona’s Under-19s in 2023 following a successful trial.

He did not make an appearance for Barcelona’s senior side and his 12-month contract with the La Liga giants ended in June 2024.

Revealed: Why Michael Essien’s move to Burnley in 1999 fell through https://www.adomonline.com/revealed-why-michael-essiens-move-to-burnley-in-1999-fell-through/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 08:01:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428644 Former Burnley Chairman Brendan Flood has revealed that the club missed out on signing Michael Essien in 1999 due to wage issues.

Essien, who gained prominence at the U-17 FIFA World Cup in New Zealand in 1999, was pursued by several clubs despite Ghana’s elimination in the semi-finals after losing to Brazil on penalties.

Burnley, then playing in the Third Tier of English football, came close to signing Essien after trials, but failed to secure his services due to wage demands.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Flood shared in a 2009 interview with The People: “I discovered Michael Essien had been on trial here for a few days. One of the best players in the World Cup – and we hadn’t signed him.

“The club policy meant we wouldn’t pay an apprentice more than 60 quid a week. It smacked me in the face that the problem was a lack of communication within the club that stopped our youth guys from making an exception to the rule,” he added.

Despite the failed deal, Michael Essien went on to play for Bastia, Lyon, and eventually made a big-money move to Chelsea in 2005.

He later played for Real Madrid, AC Milan, and other top European clubs.

Burnley’s Kompany surprise candidate for Bayern job https://www.adomonline.com/burnleys-kompany-surprise-candidate-for-bayern-job/ Tue, 21 May 2024 11:06:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2397818 Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is a surprise name on Bayern Munich’s list of potential candidates to become their new coach.

Kompany and Bayern have had initial talks though it is not known how far they have progressed and how close the parties are to making a decision.

The Bundesliga giants have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned the job down.

Talks aimed at persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem.

Kompany has built a decent reputation during his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets’ relegation – following lofty pre-season expectations – has not reflected well on the Belgian.

However, he has knowledge of the Bundesliga from his time as a player at Hamburg and speaks German.

If Bayern were to make a formal approach, it is sure to be attractive to Kompany, who signed a five-year contract extension at Burnley in 2023 but refused to answer questions about his future after Sunday’s season-ending defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Bayern endured a trophyless campaign under Tuchel, finishing third in the league behind unbeaten champions Leverkusen and second-placed Stuttgart.

Burnley relegated from Premier League by Spurs loss https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-relegated-from-premier-league-by-spurs-loss/ Sat, 11 May 2024 17:24:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2393335 Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after they could not secure a win at Tottenham which would have kept their hopes alive.

The Clarets, who knew a draw or defeat meant they would no longer be able to catch fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, took the lead when Jacob Bruun Larsen slid in a 25th-minute opener.

The joy among the travelling fans was tempered seven minutes later when Pedro Porro hammered in an equaliser.

After dominating the second half without finding a way through, Spurs were finally rewarded when defender Micky van de Ven burst forward and expertly slotted the winner into the bottom corner.

The draw would have done few favours for fifth-placed Tottenham, who needed a win to keep the pressure on Aston Villa in the race for the Champions League.

Burnley are five points behind Forest with one game remaining, meaning they join Sheffield United in making an instant return to the Championship.

Burnley face relegation after Newcastle humbling https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-face-relegation-after-newcastle-humbling/ Sat, 04 May 2024 16:30:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2389931 Burnley are staring at a second Premier League relegation in three seasons after being humbled at Turf Moor by a rampant Newcastle United.

Vincent Kompany’s men won the Championship last term and had a glimmer of survival hope before Saturday’s game, but following this wretched collapse at home and Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 win at Sheffield United, they sit five points from safety with two games remaining.

The Clarets started brightly but could not capitalise as Jacob Bruun Larsen’s effort in the third minute was smothered by Martin Dubravka, while Kompany was left incensed after referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty for Bruno Guimaraes’ shove on Lorenz Assignon in the box.

The visitors took the lead with their first attack of the game as Callum Wilson reacted quickest to slot in after Arijanet Muric parried Alexander Isak’s effort back into the danger area.

Eddie Howe’s men looked devastating each time they poured forward and took total control by netting twice more before half-time courtesy of first-time finishes by Sean Longstaff and Guimaraes.

Josh Brownhill tugged Anthony Gordon’s shirt in the box in the second half and though Isak’s penalty was saved by Muric, the Swede lashed in soon after for his 20th league goal of the campaign.

Dara O’Shea’s header gave Burnley a late consolation goal but Newcastle’s emphatic victory moves them up a place to sixth, two points ahead of Manchester United who travel to Crystal Palace on Monday (kick-off 20:00 BST).

Onana costs Manchester United as Burnley grab draw https://www.adomonline.com/onana-costs-manchester-united-as-burnley-grab-draw/ Sat, 27 Apr 2024 17:03:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2387015 Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana cost his side victory as Zeki Amdouni converted a late penalty to grab a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Despite another unconvincing display from Erik ten Hag’s men, they did look set for victory thanks to Antony’s well-taken 79th-minute effort.

But, just as he did on the opening day against Wolves, Onana recklessly charged from his line in an attempt to punch the ball clear but hit an opposition player instead.

Although referee John Brooks missed the incident in real time, unlike against Wolves the video assistant referee, Peter Bankes, stepped in. Substitute Amdouni recovered from being on the wrong end of Onana’s fist to send the keeper the wrong way.

The result moved Burnley to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.

It means United are still to win successive league games since February and, with new technical director Jason Wilcox watching on, boos from the home fans greeted the final whistle, although they were not as loud as the ones triggered by Ten Hag’s decision to take off teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after 65 minutes.

Burnley boost survival hopes with win at Sheff Utd https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-boost-survival-hopes-with-win-at-sheff-utd/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 18:50:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2383667 Burnley gave their Premier League survival hopes a huge boost with a vital victory to push bottom side Sheffield United further towards relegation.

A must-win game for both sides went the way of Vincent Kompany’s men as clinical finishing allowed them to move just three points off safety, while Chris Wilder’s side are now 10 points adrift.

The Clarets were second-best for much of the first half with Arijanet Muric making crucial saves to keep his side in the contest before they scored twice in the space of three minutes.

On-loan Jacob Bruun Larsen broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when his scuffed volley took a deflection and wrong-footed goalkeeper Ivo Grbic to dribble in at the near post.

In the next attack, Burnley doubled their advantage courtesy of full-back Lorenz Assignon weaving through and poking home via Grbic’s outstretched leg and the crossbar.

Muric made an outstanding save to deny James McAtee’s strike which was bound for the top corner, but he could do nothing about Gustavo Hamer cutting inside and curling in a sumptuous finish to give Sheffield United hope.

But the visitors restored their two-goal advantage following Lyle Foster’s tidy, first-time finish from Assignon’s cross and substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson added a delightful fourth for a thumping triumph.

O’Shea scores late as 10-man Burnley hold Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/oshea-scores-late-as-10-man-burnley-hold-chelsea/ Sat, 30 Mar 2024 17:36:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2375283 Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley at Stamford Bridge as Vincent Kompany’s side twice came from behind with 10 men to frustrate the hosts.

At five league games, it became Chelsea’s longest unbeaten run in the league in almost 18 months, but there was little good cheer directed towards Mauricio Pochettino and his players by fans at the final whistle after they saw Dara O’Shea snatch a point for Burnley late on.

Cole Palmer had earlier scored twice, the first a penalty after defender Lorenz Assignon had been dismissed for fouling Mykhailo Mudryk, then making it 2-1 after being set up by a delightful flick from the under-fire Raheem Sterling.

In between, Josh Cullen volleyed Burnley level against the run of play early in the second half, as their top-flight survival bid received an unlikely boost.

The first opportunity had been Burnley’s. A long ball up from halfway drifted over the head of Benoit Badiashile and was lashed across goal and wide by Jacob Bruun Larsen.

Next to go close was Enzo Fernandez. His shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection towards the top corner, before being brilliantly turned onto the crossbar and behind by Arijanet Muric.

It was a bright Chelsea opening, Palmer and Conor Gallagher readily a threat when linking up whilst Mudryk, fresh from scoring the goal that sent Ukraine to Euro 2024, showed speed and tricky footwork rampaging down the left.

Yet Burnley were not blunt. Wilson Odobert drew a fine, flying save from goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, finding space to fire from range after stepping inside Malo Gusto, who allowed him past too easily.

Nicolas Jackson too might have done better when he raced on to Palmer’s incisive through-ball, danced round two defenders and aimed for the corner, again though Muric saved.

Axel Disasi thought he had given Chelsea the lead midway through the first half, turning the ball in at the far post from Mudryk’s cross, only for VAR to rule it had gone in off the defender’s arm.

Mudryk fired straight at Muric after being teed up by Jackson jinking in off the right, as Chelsea’s shot count rose to 12 inside the opening 35 minutes.

The sense that Burnley were clinging on grew, and shortly before half-time their task was made exponentially harder.

Assignon initially looked to have Mudryk under control as the pair raced to reach the ball in the left channel. Mudryk stepped across him, and Assignon heaved him away and to the ground with a raised arm at neck height.

In the chaos that followed, the defender was shown a second yellow card, the fulminating Kompany too saw red, leaving Burnley a man down and with their manager banished from the touchline. With his impudent penalty, Palmer added insult to injury to give Chelsea the lead.

It was richly deserved, and so Burnley’s equaliser immediately after the break stunned the home crowd. Cullen played a one-two with Josh Brownhill 25 yards out, receiving it back and crashing an instinctive volley beyond Petrovic with the second half barely two minutes old.

The visitors would have been ahead had Petrovic not saved brilliantly one-handed from Odobert’s close-range header, then at the other end Muric was again Burnley’s saviour, beating away Jackson’s low first-time drive.

Home fans were contemplating another frustrating result when Sterling, on for Moises Caicedo, diverted the ball beautifully into the feet of Palmer with a devilish flick, and Chelsea’s top scorer crashed it into the bottom corner to restore the lead.

It lasted under three minutes. At once Burnley were up the other end winning a corner, and from it nobody in blue followed O’Shea as he ran across four defenders and headed the ball through Petrovic’s fumbled grasp to level.

Sterling should have won it when he burst onto Palmer’s far-post cross but inexplicably nodded wide, before Jay Rodriguez headed against the crossbar in the 88th minute as Burnley threatened the improbable.

Burnley’s survival hopes hit as Bournemouth win https://www.adomonline.com/burnleys-survival-hopes-hit-as-bournemouth-win/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 21:27:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364288 Burnley’s slim hopes of staying up suffered another setback as Bournemouth won in the Premier League for the first time in 2024.

Justin Kluivert set the Cherries on their way with a powerful finish past James Trafford after poor defending.

Burnley responded strongly with Neto producing an outstanding save to keep out Jacob Bruun Larsen’s free-kick while Vitinho headed a good chance over the bar.

Larsen also had a goalbound shot blocked by Adam Smith after Neto denied David Datro Fofana.

Josh Cullen’s disallowed goal – ruled out for a foul in the build-up – only added to the sense of frustration inside Turf Moor, before Antoine Semenyo wrapped up the points with a deflected finish in the 88th minute.

Burnley are 11 points from safety with 11 games left.

Bournemouth’s fifth away win of the season lifted them one place to 13th before four successive home games.

Antoine Semenyo scores in Bournemouth win over Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-scores-in-bournemouth-win-over-burnley/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 18:23:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364247 Ghana striker, Antoine Semenyo was on the scoresheet in Bournemouth’s triumph over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Turf Moore.

The match saw Dutch talent Justin Kluivert swiftly secure the lead for the visitors, finding the net just 13 minutes into the game, granting Bournemouth a favourable halftime advantage.

In a standout performance, Semenyo amplified the lead with a powerful goal, securing victory for his team just two minutes before the final whistle, capitalizing on an assist from Lewis Cook.

Semenyo’s impact on Bournemouth’s campaign has been undeniable. With five goals and two assists to his name in 22 appearances in the English Premier League, the 24-year-old forward has proven to be a pivotal asset for his team.

As the season progresses, Semenyo aims to sustain his impressive form, providing Bournemouth with a potent offensive edge.

Semenyo will hope to return to the scoresheet again when they host bottom-placed Sheffield United at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Liverpool return to top with win over Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-return-to-top-with-win-over-burnley/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 18:55:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2354169 Liverpool returned to the top of the table as they got back to winning ways against struggling Burnley in front of a club-record league crowd at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were looking to respond after last weekend’s defeat by Arsenal, and having fallen a point behind Manchester City.

They took the lead through Diogo Jota’s header from a corner which Burnley keeper James Trafford failed to claim.

The Clarets, who have been in the relegation zone for most of the season, levelled before half-time through Dara O’Shea’s superb header before Luis Diaz restored the lead in the 52nd minute.

Burnley had several chances to equalise before Darwin Nunez’s header from Harvey Elliott’s cross sealed the points.

On a tetchy afternoon, both Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany were booked by referee Tim Robinson for protesting after decisions went against their teams.

Liverpool were without first-choice keeper Alisson because of illness but stand-in Caoimhin Kelleher made a fine save to deny David Datro Fofana an equaliser when the score was 2-1.

The Reds, watched by a crowd of 59,896, had briefly been replaced at the top of the table after City’s 2-0 win over Everton in the early kick-off.

But Liverpool reclaimed their two-point advantage – albeit having played one game more than their nearest rivals – while Burnley remain 19th.

Alvarez nets twice on birthday as Man City beat Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/alvarez-nets-twice-on-birthday-as-man-city-beat-burnley/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 22:32:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2350122 Erling Haaland was upstaged on his return from injury by fellow striker Julian Alvarez as Manchester City strolled to victory against Burnley.

Haaland made his first appearance since fracturing his foot in the defeat at Aston Villa on 6 December when he was introduced as a 71st-minute substitute at Etihad Stadium.

However, while the Norwegian’s major involvement was to draw laughs from team-mates Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic on the bench when he mis-kicked what was intended to be a shot on the turn, Alvarez turned 24 in style.

The Argentine took man-of-the-match honours by becoming just the 10th player to score two goals or more on their birthday in a Premier League game.

Both efforts came in the opening period. Matheus Nunes chipped a superb cross into the six-yard box for Alvarez to head home in the 16th minute.

And just six minutes later, Alvarez profited from a brilliantly worked training ground free-kick routine as Kevin de Bruyne shaped to curl a cross into the box but instead rolled a perfect 20-yard pass which just needed the first-time finish.

Rodri added a third in trademark fashion in the opening minute of the second-half, driving home Phil Foden’s cut-back from the edge of the area.

Burnley boss, and former City captain, Vincent Kompany would have been pleased with the way his side kept battling until the end.

They were at least able to grab an injury-time consolation as defender Ameen Al-Dakhil bundled in their first goal in seven visits to this stadium since 2018.

They were ultimately powerless, though, to stop second-placed City’s eighth successive win all competitions and 13th consecutive victory against Burnley.

The result allows Pep Guardiola’s side to keep pace with Liverpool and Arsenal in their chase for an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title – and keeps second-bottom Burnley mired in relegation trouble, with only three victories all season.

Liverpool go top after hard-fought win at Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-go-top-after-hard-fought-win-at-burnley/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 22:13:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2336742 Liverpool signalled their title ambitions by going top of the Premier League thanks to a hard-fought victory at relegation-threatened Burnley.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have only been beaten once so far this season and went two points clear of Arsenal at the summit despite some wastefulness in front of goal.

The Reds got the perfect start by netting after just six minutes as Darwin Nunez guided in a lovely finish from the edge of the box to end a run of 12 club games without a goal.

The impressive James Trafford was kept busy in the Burnley goal and had already smothered Harvey Elliott’s low drive before making a stunning fingertip stop to deny Mohamed Salah.

The wave of attacks from the Reds was unrelenting and Cody Gakpo had a goal disallowed for Nunez’s foul on Charlie Taylor, while Salah rattled the crossbar – all before half-time.

Elliott also had an effort chalked off for Salah interfering with play in a offside position, but the visitors did finally get their second when Diogo Jota smacked home in the final minute.

Burnley, meanwhile, failed to work Alisson into a single save and are in deep trouble in the bottom three, now fives points adrift of safety.

Aston Villa will go level on points with Liverpool if they beat Manchester United later on Tuesday (20:00 GMT kick-off), while Arsenal can regain top spot with success over West Ham on Thursday.

Rebecca Welch officiates Fulham v Burnley to become Premier League’s first woman referee https://www.adomonline.com/rebecca-welch-officiates-fulham-v-burnley-to-become-premier-leagues-first-woman-referee/ Sat, 23 Dec 2023 20:04:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2336147 Rebecca Welch made history on Saturday when she became the first woman to referee a Premier League fixture.

The 40-year-old took charge of Burnley’s 2-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Welch became a referee in 2010 when she combined it with a job in the NHS, before becoming a full-time official in 2019.

In January, Welch became the first woman to referee a men’s fixture in the Championship.

She returned to Craven Cottage a month on from serving as the fourth official during Fulham’s 1-0 Premier League defeat by Manchester United.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, who spoke to Welch at full-time, said: “I wanted to congratulate her because it’s a big moment.

“After the game it’s fair to say that it’s a milestone moment and may there be more, and the best thing will always be when someone is judged on merit.

“But you have to have a first and this is it, so well done [to her] and I’m happy to be part of this moment.”

Welch was the first woman to take charge of an FA Cup third-round tie in 2022 after being added to the EFL’s national list for men’s football, which oversees both League One and League Two fixtures.

The referee, from Washington in Tyne and Wear, has been a leading light for English officials in the Women’s Super League.

Her work has been recognised on the international stage too as she was added to Fifa’s elite list of international match officials in December 2020, before refereeing at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in the summer.

“We have not seen a female take charge of a Premier League game ever before,” referees’ chief Howard Webb told BBC Sport.

“We have some really talented officials in the men’s and women’s game. Rebecca is leading that.

“She went to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She has been exposed to some big games and is a really good model for women and girls to think refereeing is for them when previously they didn’t.”

In July, the Football Association laid out plans to recruit 50% more referees from “historically under-represented” backgrounds by 2026, targeting an increase of 1,000 women referees and 1,000 black or Asian referees at all levels of football in three years.

Mohammed Kudus reacts after grabbing two assists in West Ham win at Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/mohammed-kudus-reacts-after-grabbing-two-assists-in-west-ham-win-at-burnley/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 12:25:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2325836 Ghana international, Mohammed Kudus has reacted after assisting twice in West Ham United’s win against Burnley over the weekend in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old however conceded a penalty that Jay Rodriguez converted to put the hosts in front.

But, rather than dwell on his misfortune, Kudus rose to the occasion and provided two devastating crosses in the final stages of the game to lead his side to an unlikely yet hugely satisfying 2-1 victory.

“Until the last whistle goes, we’ll keep fighting until the end and Saturday you could see an example of that,” he told West Ham TV.

“I just keep my focus throughout the whole game. It’s easy to give up in games like this, especially when they have more of the ball and we are defending a lot, but we still believed and still kept doing what we do best and luckily we got the win.

“[After conceding a penalty] I knew I had to do anything to bring the team back into the game and you could see that in the last actions.”

With time running out in Lancashire, Kudus first beat three men before crossing low and hard and, as Divin Mubama challenged, Dara O’Shea put through his own net.

Then, in the first minute of added time, he again worked space before swinging the ball to the far post for Tomáš Souček to volley unerringly past James Trafford.

“Like I said, I had to make something happen I had to use my individual skills and luckily it worked,” he continued. “If there was no run there [from Divin], the defender would have easily cleared the ball so it had an effect on that. Strikers have to be there so I hoped he would get the goal, but we take the three points!

“[For the winning goal] when I come inside on second balls, we practice that a lot and it was a good finish from Tomáš!”.

West Ham’s win was their second in a row in the Premier League and fourth in five matches in all competitions, setting the Irons up for a busy period of nine games in 29 days to close out the calendar year.

“We keep improving and the points are very important, so we’ll build and focus on the next game,” Kudus concluded. “It was a good win to come back from the international break, as everybody was away in different places playing different styles with their countries, so it’s good to get back together and get that winning feeling again.”

Mohammed Kudus after 16 appearances for West Ham has five goals to his credit. He will hope to keep his fine performance intact when the Hammers travel to Backa Tapolo in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Arsenal go second with victory over Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-go-second-with-victory-over-burnley/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 22:59:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2317895 Arsenal moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City courtesy of a hard-fought victory over beleaguered Burnley.

The Gunners, beaten at Newcastle last weekend, had struggled to break down a disciplined Clarets side for much of the first half but broke the deadlock when Leandro Trossard bravely nodded in at the far post for Arsenal’s 1,000th goal at Emirates Stadium.

Burnley equalised eight minutes into the second half when Josh Brownhill’s low shot was deflected into the net by Gabriel, but the visitors were level for only three minutes before William Saliba headed in Trossard’s corner from point-blank range.

Oleksandr Zinchenko completed the scoring with an acrobatic finish into the top corner after Dara O’Shea had inadvertently steered another Trossard corner onto the crossbar.

Arsenal finished the game with 10 men after second-half substitute Fabio Vieira was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Brownhill, but the Gunners held on comfortably.

Burnley stay in the relegation zone while Arsenal trail league leaders City on goal difference – although Pep Guardiola’s team can restore their three-point lead with victory at Chelsea on Sunday.

“I’m very happy with the performance,” Gunners boss Mikel Arteta told BBC Sport. “The way the team dominated the game, we fully deserved to win.

“They were defending really deep [but] we generated a lot today and looked a threat every time [we came forward]. The timing of the equaliser was perfect.”

Sterling inspires Chelsea to comeback win at Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/sterling-inspires-chelsea-to-comeback-win-at-burnley/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 16:42:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2303328 Raheem Sterling inspired Chelsea to an impressive comeback win as Burnley slumped to their fifth successive Premier League home defeat of the campaign.

Eighteen-year-old French forward Wilson Odobert marked his first Premier League start by drilling low and hard past Robert Sanchez to send home fans into raptures at Turf Moor.

Chelsea were disjointed for spells but were back on level terms before half-time thanks to an unfortunate own goal.

A cross by Sterling, back in the starting XI after a virus, struck the knee of Belgium defender Ameen Al-Dakhil and looped over James Trafford into the net.

Chelsea then scored three times in a strong second-half showing to take the points.

Sterling, who has not featured for England since the World Cup, won a penalty after being fouled by Brazilian defender Vitinho, which allowed Cole Palmer to score his first goal for the Blues since moving from Manchester City.

The four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City then scored his side’s third with an arrowed finish after Conor Gallagher had spotted his run.

Play restarted after Sterling’s goal before referee Stuart Attwell stopped the game as a check by the video assistant referee (VAR) for a potential offside was continuing.

However, the goal was eventually allowed to stand.

Substitute Nicolas Jackson sealed the points with a spin and finish, with Sterling once again involved in the move.

Having won at Fulham on Monday, it is the first time Chelsea have secured back-to-back away wins in the Premier League since October 2022.

Fernandes stunner helps Man Utd to win at Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/fernandes-stunner-helps-man-utd-to-win-at-burnley/ Sun, 24 Sep 2023 08:39:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2297659 Bruno Fernandes’ stunning volley gave Manchester United a much-needed victory as they edged past winless Burnley in the Premier League.

United were in desperate search for inspiration following three straight defeats and received it on 45 minutes courtesy of captain Fernandes, who brilliantly volleyed home a first-time finish from Jonny Evans’ lofted pass.

The sublime strike was worthy of winning any game and gave United their third win from six league games this season, leaving Vincent Kompany’s side bottom of the table with only a point so far.

Burnley played some delightful football in periods and Zeki Amdouni gave the visitors a scare with a free header that was pushed away by Andre Onana at full stretch.

The Burnley frontman had an even better chance when he was played through by Aaron Ramsey, but a low shot cannoned off the foot of the post.

Evans thought he had given United the lead when he headed in a corner, but the effort was ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) for Rasmus Hojlund’s block on goalkeeper James Trafford.

Burnley went hunting for an equaliser in the second period and Sander Berge narrowly headed over as United held on for victory.

PL: Hudson-Odoi stunner earns Forest draw against Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/pl-hudson-odoi-stunner-earns-forest-draw-against-burnley/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 08:35:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2295583 Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a glorious equaliser on his Nottingham Forest debut to earn a Premier League draw against Burnley.

The Clarets looked to be controlling the game but deadline day signing Hudson-Odoi had other ideas, curling a stunning strike into the top corner on the hour mark.

Burnley had taken a first-half lead through Zeki Amdouni’s well-taken shot into the bottom corner after fine work by the lively teenager Luca Koleosho.

Swiss striker Amdouni, who scored the winner here in the Carabao Cup just 20 days ago, had already given goalkeeper Matt Turner a warning sign with a stinging drive from range before netting a cool finish.

Vincent Kompany’s visitors thought they had grabbed the winner 12 minutes from time when Lyle Foster stroked in from close range, but it was ruled out for a handball by Sander Berge in the build-up.

Burnley’s night then ended on a sour note when top scorer Foster was sent off for violent conduct in injury time, after a needless off-the-ball elbow on Ryan Yates.

Following three straight defeats, the result allows Burnley to get off the mark this season, while Forest have made a decent start to the campaign with seven points from five games.

PL: Son hits hat-trick as Spurs thrash Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/pl-son-hits-hat-trick-as-spurs-thrash-burnley/ Sat, 02 Sep 2023 20:56:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2290056 Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick as Tottenham recovered from a goal down to thrash Burnley at Turf Moor and continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Lyle Foster finished a lovely, flowing move to give the Clarets an early lead, but Son’s delicate finish restored parity 12 minutes later and the visitors never looked back.

They dominated the rest of the half and Cristian Romero’s curling effort from the edge of the box completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time.

James Maddison continued his fine start to the campaign with a peach of a goal nine minutes into the second half, the former Leicester man curling beyond James Trafford after Burnley had gifted the visitors possession inside their own half.

Son side-footed past Trafford for his second of the game before completing his treble with a low strike after latching on to Pedro Porro’s delightful through ball.

Josh Brownhill’s neat finish pulled one back for Burnley in stoppage time, but it was no more than a consolation.

Spurs, who were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Fulham on Tuesday, move to ten points from their opening four games, while Burnley remain without a point this season.

PL: Haaland scores twice as Man City beat Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/pl-haaland-scores-twice-as-man-city-beat-burnley/ Sat, 12 Aug 2023 08:29:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2282741 Erling Haaland was back in the old routine with a devastating display of finishing as Manchester City opened the defence of their Premier League title with a comfortable victory at Burnley.

The goalscoring phenomenon, who hit 52 goals as City won the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League last season, took only 185 seconds to open his account for the new campaign, striking a blow from which the newly promoted Clarets never recovered.

Haaland pounced in the area when Rodri headed down Kevin de Bruyne’s cross, then curled in a magnificent left-foot strike into the top corner beyond Burnley keeper James Trafford after 36 minutes to effectively end the contest.

Burnley, roared on by a passionate home crowd, never gave up but City’s control grew more emphatic as the game went on, Rodri turning home the third with 15 minutes left after the home defence failed to clear a free-kick.

It all ended very comfortably for City, their night only marred by another injury for De Bruyne, who limped off after only 23 minutes to be replaced by summer signing Mateo Kovacic.

Burnley had Anass Zaroury sent off in injury time, after a the video assistant referee review, for a dangerous lunge on Kyle Walker.

Vincent Kompany: Burnley boss signs five-year deal after winning Championship title https://www.adomonline.com/vincent-kompany-burnley-boss-signs-five-year-deal-after-winning-championship-title/ Mon, 08 May 2023 13:52:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2246778 Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year contract to remain with the Championship title winners until the summer of 2028.

The 37-year-old led the Clarets back to the Premier League at his first attempt this season, having joined in 2022.

The club could become the first Championship side to break the 100-point mark since Leicester in 2013-14 when they face Cardiff on Monday.

“Burnley and Turf Moor felt right pretty much from the start,” he said.

“So it also feels right to sign for the next five years.

“Together with the fans, we have made Turf Moor a fortress again and continue to look forward to the future and the job of making Burnley better with every step.”

Kompany has transformed the fortunes of a club that was short of confidence, having been relegated from the Premier League last season.

They have lost on just three occasions in the league, just once at home, so far this term.

Such has been their dominance that, headed into the final game of the season on Monday, the Clarets command a 19-point gap on third-placed Luton Town.

It has led to Kompany being eyed by Premier League Chelsea as a potential new head coach, while he was also linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

“He is the perfect fit for how we all see Burnley Football Club moving forward,” club chairman Alan Pace said.

“An extraordinary leader, setting ever higher standards and driving our club to the levels we all want to achieve.”

Kompany’s new contract comes two days after Burnley had a transfer embargo lifted.

It was imposed after a late submission of their accounts because of a change of auditor.

Burnley promoted to Premier League after win at Middlesbrough https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-promoted-to-premier-league-after-win-at-middlesbrough/ Sat, 08 Apr 2023 08:10:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2237368 Vincent Kompany’s Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt with victory over fourth-placed Middlesbrough.

The Clarets, unbeaten in the league since November, took an early lead when Ashley Barnes redirected Josh Brownhill’s low shot into the back of the net.

The home side equalised just after half-time when Championship top scorer Chuba Akpom scored from the spot after Josh Cullen felled Cameron Archer in the penalty area.

Connor Roberts steered in the winner from Nathan Tella’s near-post cross and Kompany’s men saw out the rest of the game in comfort to spark wild celebrations on the pitch and among their travelling fans.

Victory for the east Lancashire side sent them 19 points clear of third-placed Luton, who have six games left to play.

Kompany left Belgian top-flight side Anderlecht to take over at Turf Moor after they were relegated on the final day of last season, and the former Manchester City defender has enjoyed a near-flawless first campaign.

Despite a massive turnaround of players in the summer following the end of their six-year spell in the Premier League they have become the first team in the English Football League to secure promotion in 2022-23, having been top of the table since 25 October.

The Lancashire side now need just 11 points from their final seven games to secure the title, while 13 will see them become the first Championship team to break the 100-point barrier since Leicester City in 2013-14.

The Clarets host second-placed Sheffield United, the last team to beat them in a league game 19 matches ago, on Monday.

For fourth-placed Middlesbrough this was a damaging second successive defeat and they are nine points adrift of the Blades, who have also played a game fewer.

Haaland hits FA Cup hat-trick as Man City rout Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/haaland-hits-fa-cup-hat-trick-as-man-city-rout-burnley/ Sun, 19 Mar 2023 04:01:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2229689 Erling Haaland scored his second hat-trick in five days as Manchester City cruised into the FA Cup semi-finals by hammering Championship leaders Burnley at Etihad Stadium.

Haaland followed his five-goal haul against RB Leipzig in the Champions League by claiming another three to take his tally for the season to 42.

The Norwegian is now just two short of the record jointly held by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mohamed Salah for the most goals in a season for an English top-flight club in all competitions during the Premier League era.

Julian Alvarez added two goals and substitute Cole Palmer also scored on a sobering night for former City skipper Vincent Kompany, whose Burnley side have surged 13 points clear at the top of the Championship.

Burnley did well in the first half but could not match Haaland’s staggering efficiency in front of goal.

City opened up in the second period though, underlining the chasm in class between England’s top two divisions.

“He is at the right place for his development because he is still very young,” said Burnley boss Kompany of Haaland. “He will get better – he has the right coach and the right mindset.

“I have played against the greats. They are part of a special elite. The very best find it difficult to stop these guys. They keep finding a way. He looks like a superstar who is willing to improve and that is exciting to see. The goalscoring record puts you in a certain bracket – it is the hardest part of the game.”

It will be City’s sixth semi-final appearance in seven seasons under Pep Guardiola, and on this form few will argue against them lifting the trophy for only the second time in that period as they retain hopes of completing the Treble.

The draw for the FA Cup semi-finals takes place on Sunday following Brighton’s tie against Grimsby Town (14:15 GMT), live on BBC One.

Former Man City captain Kompany named Burnley boss https://www.adomonline.com/former-man-city-captain-kompany-named-burnley-boss/ Tue, 14 Jun 2022 13:26:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2126180 Burnley have appointed former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany as manager.

The Belgian, 36, was in charge at Anderlecht for two years before leaving by mutual consent in May, having led them to third the Belgian top flight.

Burnley sacked Sean Dyche in April and replaced him with interim boss Mike Jackson, who was unable to prevent relegation from the Premier League.

“I’m excited by the challenge ahead,” Kompany said.

“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager.

“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club which aligns with my own and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

Former Belgium defender Kompany spent 11 years at City, where he won 10 major trophies, including four Premier League titles.

His appointment comes amid Burnley’s financial troubles. They received a £65m loan with American finance company MSD Holdings, a “significant proportion” of which now has to be repaid after falling out of the top flight.

Burnley have not specified the length of Kompany’s contract.

The previous time the Clarets went down from the Premier League, in 2014-15, Dyche stayed in charge and led them to the Championship title the following season.

Kompany’s managerial history

Kompany returned to boyhood club Anderlecht as player-manager in 2019, his first coaching job.

However, he relinquished managerial duties after only four games to concentrate on playing, with the club having won only two points. They went on to finish eighth.

Kompany retired from playing and took over as manager in August 2020, after which Anderlecht won 41, lost 19 and drew 30 of his 90 games.

Anderlecht finished fourth in his first full season in charge and this season finished third, 11 points behind champions Club Bruges.

Anderlecht chief executive Peter Verbeke said Kompany was an “essential part” in rebuilding the club.

“He brought professionalism and expertise and has also been important in the development of young players,” Verbeke said.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace said: “Vincent is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the club back to the Premier League.

“Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium’s biggest teams back to European football and a cup final last season and we’ve been excited by his philosophy, approach and ambition for the club.”

Burnley sack manager Sean Dyche with eight games left https://www.adomonline.com/burnley-sack-manager-sean-dyche-with-eight-games-left/ Fri, 15 Apr 2022 15:10:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2105132 Burnley have sacked manager Sean Dyche with eight games left of their season in the Premier League.

The Clarets, who have lost five of their last six top-flight games, are 18th and four points from safety.

Dyche was the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, having taken over at Turf Moor in October 2012.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace said it was “an incredibly difficult decision” to part company with Dyche, but “we feel a change is needed”.

Dyche’s last game in charge of Burnley saw them lose 2-0 to Norwich City, who are bottom of the Premier League.

Assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer have also left the club.

“Firstly, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sean and his staff for their achievements at the club over the last decade,” said Pace.

“During his time at Turf Moor, Sean has been a credit both on and off the pitch, respected by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community.

“However, results this season have been disappointing and, while this was an incredibly difficult decision, with eight crucial games of the campaign remaining, we feel a change is needed to give the squad the best possible chance of retaining its Premier League status.

“Under-23s coach Mike Jackson, assisted by academy director Paul Jenkins, Under-23s goalkeeping coach Connor King and club captain Ben Mee have been asked to take charge of the team for Sunday’s game with West Ham United.

“The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course.”

PL: Man Utd in top six after beating Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/pl-man-utd-in-top-six-after-beating-burnley/ Sat, 01 Jan 2022 00:00:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2063605 Manchester United scored three first-half goals for the first time in the Premier League since January as they swept Burnley aside at Old Trafford to move back into the top six.

Scott McTominay’s eighth-minute curler from the edge of the area was United’s quickest top-flight goal since the Scot scored twice in the opening minutes against Leeds more than 12 months ago.

Jadon Sancho’s deflected effort doubled the hosts’ advantage before Cristiano Ronaldo – who had wasted a glorious chance after being sent clean through when the game was still goalless – tapped into an empty net after McTominay’s shot had been touched on to a post by Burnley keeper Wayne Hennessey.

Aaron Lennon took advantage of a poor first touch from Eric Bailly to pull one back for the visitors with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

However, in their first game since 12 December, Burnley lacked the stamina or the guile to trouble United further and remain in the bottom three.

The victory extends United’s unbeaten run since the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to eight matches, although as they are only two points closer to the top of the league than the bottom, they still have some way to go if they are to start to create a meaningful legacy to the feats of Sir Alex Ferguson, who celebrates his 80th birthday on New Year’s Eve.

PL: Burnley snatch a hard-fought point against Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/pl-burnley-snatch-a-hard-fought-point-against-chelsea/ Sat, 06 Nov 2021 22:15:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2039822 Premier League leaders Chelsea would have won their game against Burnley 99 times out of 100, said boss Thomas Tuchel as they let the Clarets “steal a point by pure luck”.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Chelsea with a header from Reece James’ cross, only his second league goal this season.

The Blues could have scored a hatful with Thiago Silva’s header hitting the post, while Nick Pope saved well from Callum Hudson-Odoi in each half.

But Burnley levelled when Ashley Westwood whipped in a cross which Jay Rodriguez headed across to Vydra to stab home.

“That’s why everyone loves the game – a team can steal a point if the other team forgets to score the goals they deserve,” Tuchel.

“We played a fantastic match. Of course, I’m disappointed.

“If we played this game 100 times, we’d win 99 times. Today we didn’t win it. The second goal would have decided it. It’s always possible you miss one ball, one cross, and this can happen.

“It’s our fault. We should have scored. We created so many chances.

“You have the opponent where you want to have them. You create so many chances. We let them believe it was possible to steal a point by pure luck and that’s what happened.”

Chelsea are three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, while Burnley remain in the relegation zone.

Arsenal dominated the early proceedings and could have found more reward than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s sixth-minute strike which squeezed under Nick Pope’s hand at the near post.

Six minutes before the break Burnley were gifted a lifeline when Arsenal’s error-prone Swiss midfielder just eight yards from his own goal tried to clip a ball square to David Luiz but saw his pass deflect off Chris Wood and into the net.

Five minutes from time it seemed like Arsenal would have a chance to win the game when they were awarded a penalty and Erik Pieters sent off for handball after blocking Nicolas Pepe’s effort at goal, but VAR ruled the ball hit his shoulder and the penalty and red card were rescinded.

Spurs made a dream start as Bale netted inside 70 seconds, latching on to the end of Son Heung-Min’s teasing cross to stun the usually resilient Clarets.

And the hosts looked dangerous every time they went forward and doubled their lead 15 minutes later as Bale added an assist to his goal with a pinged cross-field pass to Harry Kane who smashed past a helpless Nick Pope.

A third goal looked inevitable as Spurs ran riot and Lucas Moura scored it after finding the ball at his feet following Sergio Reguilon’s cross, rifling past Pope from close range.

Burnley looked a better side in the second half but the hosts landed a killer blow just as the Clarets were finding their rhythm.

Son again turned provider as he found Bale in acres of space out right, before the Welshman cut inside and curled a wonderful effort into the corner for his second goal of the game.

Burnley were limited to series of long-range efforts as Matej Vydra did his best to get the visitors on the scoresheet.

But Tottenham kept their opponents out to add gloss to a brilliant attacking performance that sees them leapfrog Arsenal into eighth in the table.

Pep Guardiola’s side started the day in 14th having failed to score more than once in their last six league games, and without a win in their last two.

But any notion that City could be frustrated by Burnley were put to bed after just six minutes when Mahrez opened the scoring after yet another assist from Kevin De Bruyne.

City doubled their advantage in the 22nd-minute when the visitors were caught napping from Kyle Walker’s throw-in with Mahrez pouncing and curling home his second.

Benjamin Mendy piled more misery on Burnley as he scored his first goal for the club with a lovely first-time volley from De Bruyne’s floated cross five minutes before the break.

Ferran Torres grabbed his fifth goal of the season, but his first in the Premier League, to make it 4-0 in the 66th minute following a lovely attacking move involving Walker and Gabriel Jesus.

And three minutes later Mahrez was celebrating his hat-trick after heading in at the back post from substitute Phil Foden’s deep delivery.

It was a baptism of fire for Burnley’s Premier League debutant goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who replaced the injured Nick Pope, and the 24-year-old had VAR to thank for chalking off an unfortunate own goal as City thought they had a sixth.

It means that for the fourth consecutive meeting between the sides at the Etihad City recorded a 5-0 victory, a win that moves them up to eighth, three points adrift of the top four, while Burnley remain 17th.
