Festus Aboagye (Rtd) has called on the government to investigate allegations made against the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier-General Michael Opoku.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Brigadier-General Opoku of plotting to rig the upcoming December 7 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

At a November 19 press conference, NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi alleged that the military officer was involved in activities such as ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, and deploying operatives disguised as military personnel to disrupt the electoral process.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM, Col. Aboagye emphasized the importance of an impartial investigation into the matter.

“What the NDC said, whether it’s true or not, the government needs to investigate. It’s been 48 hours, and the government has not said anything about the issue,” he noted.

The security analyst clarified the distinction between political parties and government institutions, urging agencies such as the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), or the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to handle the matter.

“The government is distinct from political parties. Political parties are elected to govern, but the constitution mandates them to look after the country. Therefore, the allegations against the NPP are not directed at the government as a whole. While the government is formed by the NPP, constitutionally, it is not just the NPP. Agencies like the NIB, EOCO, or CID should be allowed to conduct an investigation,” he explained.

“These allegations, if unresolved, can destabilize the country. The government must act swiftly to ensure transparency and stability,” he added.

Why now? Sam Pyne questions NDC’s election-rigging allegations against Brigadier Gen. Opoku https://www.adomonline.com/why-now-sam-pyne-questions-ndcs-election-rigging-allegations-against-brigadier-gen-opoku/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 11:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473733 Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Mayor, Samuel Pyne, has questioned the timing of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) election-rigging allegations in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Pyne expressed disbelief, stating that he could not understand why the NDC would make such claims just 17 days before the December 7 election.

On Tuesday, the NDC called for the immediate removal of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Brigadier General Michael Opoku.

The party alleged that President Akufo-Addo tasked Brigadier General Opoku with rigging the election in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region.

As part of these allegations, Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku was recently promoted to his current position and had been promised the role of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) if the NPP wins.

However, Mr. Pyne, a former NPP Ashanti Regional Secretary, dismissed the claims as baseless during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

Admitting he was not a spokesperson for the military officer, Mr. Pyne argued that such accusations, lacking evidence, should not be entertained.

“I don’t speak for Brigadier General Opoku, but there are certain things you hear, and you should ask even a child if it makes sense.

“They claimed he was in charge of operations at the National Security before being promoted and transferred in July. So, why are they making these claims now? Why didn’t they raise concerns earlier? Is it only now they’ve realized he’s supposedly there to rig elections?” he questioned.

The KMA Mayor challenged the NDC to substantiate their allegations if they claim to have credible evidence.

NDC calls for Brigadier Gen. Opoku’s immediate removal https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-calls-for-brigadier-gen-opokus-immediate-removal/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:03:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473504 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate removal of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces(GAF) Brigadier General Michael Opoku.

According to the NDC, unlike many professionals and noblemen and women in Ghana’s security agencies, Brigadier General Opoku has a “notorious” track record unbecoming of his position.the

Addressing the press on Tuesday, November 19, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, said that this “devious” character carries the mayhem and brutality Brigadier General Opoku supervised at Ayawaso West Wugon as a badge of dishonour.

“A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections. Given his history, we call for his immediate removal from his position as GOC of the Central Command,” he said.

He further asserted that a “miscreant” like Brigadier General Opoku should not be involved in the security architecture for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

“The NDC wishes to serve notice to Brigadier-General Michael Opoku and his collaborators in the New Patriotic Party that we have them under our radar and will continue to monitor them with eagle eyes. This time around, he and his ilk shall not succeed. Violence cannot and will not win the NPP this year’s election,” Mr Gyamfi warned.

The NDC also called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to ensure no individual usurps his authority.

The party noted that Ghanaians still await justice for the eight innocent Ghanaians who were shot and killed during the 2020 elections, including those shot in broad daylight at Techiman South.

“The IGP and the Elections Security Task Force must get to the bottom of this election-rigging agenda and stop Brigadier-General Opoku and his thugs from embarking on another Techiman South-styled killing.

“The IGP owes a duty to the people of Ghana to be firm and fair-minded to ensure peace during and after the elections. In this regard, we assure him of our fullest cooperation.”

The party further called on the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, to investigate these allegations and hold Brigadier General Opoku accountable.

“The NDC and by extension, the people of Ghana will hold the IGP, the Chief of Defence Staff and our security heads responsible for the loss of a single life in the 2024 general elections. ”

“Elections are about counting heads and not cutting heads. No person must lose his or her life on the altar of elections,” the party added.

2024 Polls: NDC accuses Brigadier General of election-rigging plot https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-ndc-accuses-brigadier-general-of-election-rigging-plot/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 16:54:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473474

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged a plot by President Akufo-Addo to rig the 2024 election in the Ashanti Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the NDC, Akufo-Addo has tasked the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Brigadier General Michael Opoku, to execute the plan.

NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi made these claims at a press conference on Tuesday, with 18 days remaining until the December 7 election.

As part of the alleged strategy, Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku was recently promoted to his current position.

“In his current role, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been tasked by Akufo-Addo to carry out a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region, through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets, and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 this year,” he claimed.

He added that the military officer should have been reprimanded for his role in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence but was instead rewarded with a promotion.

He further alleged that the officer has been promised the position of Chief of Defence Staff if the NPP wins the 2024 election.

“Having relocated his family to the United Kingdom, Brigadier General Opoku has vowed to do whatever it takes to carry out his shady election-rigging plot in exchange for the position of Chief of Defence Staff in the unlikely event that the NPP wins the 2024 election,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi also alleged that the NDC has received intelligence that Brigadier General Opoku is training NPP thugs at the Asutuare military camp.

“Brigadier General Opoku plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters, and innocent civilians on Election Day.”
