The situation follows the tragic deaths of over 11 individuals, including a final-year student from Nkwanta Senior High School, linked to tensions over New Yam rituals in the Nkwanta area.

In response, the Ministry of the Interior imposed a curfew, citing intelligence reports indicating heightened risk. The curfew hours, originally from 10 PM to 5 AM, have since been revised to begin at 6 PM, significantly affecting evening travel plans.

As a result, many commuters had no choice but to seek refuge in Brewaniase, waiting until morning to continue their journeys.

As night fell, the distress of the situation became more apparent. In interviews with Adom News, several travellers expressed frustration, particularly over the incessant mosquito bites they endured while sleeping outdoors. Many were forced to rest on pavements, exposed to the elements.

“We couldn’t sleep. The mosquitoes were just too much,” one passenger lamented.

Travellers have appealed to the government to take urgent steps to restore lasting peace in the Nkwanta area and its surroundings. They also called on local stakeholders and community members to come together to rebuild trust and bring back the vibrancy of the town.
