Nurse Manager at the facility, Vida Ompong, said the hospital is scaling up community outreach and public education initiatives to encourage women to seek screening and medical attention early.

Speaking to Adom News during a breast cancer awareness float, sensitisation exercise, and free screening event in Bechem, Mrs. Ompong revealed that many breast cancer-related deaths in the municipality result from patients reporting late to health facilities.

“It is worrying to see women dying because they do not report early for treatment. That is why we have intensified sensitisation and free screening exercises for churches, schools, and community groups,” she explained.

She added that the hospital’s community-based approach — which includes health floats, door-to-door education, and targeted outreach — is already helping more women understand the importance of early detection.

“We believe these efforts will help end the late reporting of breast cancer cases in Tano South,” she said.

The Akwamuhene and acting president of the Bechem Traditional Council, Nana Boampong Bekoe, who chaired the event, commended the hospital for its proactive stance in the fight against the disease.

He urged national health authorities to expand awareness campaigns beyond October, suggesting that Breast Cancer Awareness Month be observed three times a year due to the deadly nature of the illness.

“Given how dangerous breast cancer can be when not detected early, I believe Ghana should intensify awareness campaigns throughout the year,” Nana Bekoe said.

The event drew participants from various communities, with over 100 women benefiting from free screening and education sessions led by the Bechem Government Hospital’s medical team.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month https://www.adomonline.com/october-is-breast-cancer-awareness-month/ Sat, 11 Oct 2025 05:33:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587315 This is a good moment to reflect on our relationship with this most complex organ that is, for most of us, our first source of nourishment and so central to love and male-female interactions.

It generates proverbs, from the profound to the profane. My favourite, for inspiration, is “Every big, beautiful breast you see was once a nipple.”

This gives encouragement to all, wherever they are in life. Unfortunately, despite the obvious visibility of the breast, breast cancer is widespread and, for Africans, extremely deadly.

It affects one in eight women across the world. While the 5-year survival rate in North America is about 91%, it is only about 50% in Sub-Saharan Africa!

This is mainly due to the fact that 60-70% of breast cancer in Africa is diagnosed late. In 2022, according to the National Institute of Health, 198,300 new cases were diagnosed and there were 91,300 deaths in Sub-saharan Africa.

I believe these figures are on the low side. This is projected to double by 2050! This is a real crisis. We need to increase breast cancer awareness and screening.

Beginning around 40, women should have mammograms, combined with Clinical Breast Exams every one to two years till they are 75.

In addition, they should know that smoking, alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise are risk factors. While screening is important, women–and men who are also at some risk for breast cancer need to know the signs and symptoms to look out for.

These include breast lumps, nipple discharge and flattening, breast skin changes etc. These must be reported.

Governments too must increase resources and support the training of more cancer doctors.

My appeal here though is to every African. Don’t just sing sweet mother– encourage her to get a mammogram. Don’t just get her a phone, pay for her mammogram.

Don’t just think of smooching– ask whether she had a mammogram.

Don’t just say, “Black woman, woman of Africa– Say black woman, get a mammogram”! Make this breast cancer awareness month count. God bless you and God bless Africa.

In a statement issued on October 6, 2025, which coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the former Gomoa Central MP expressed gratitude for life and good health, while emphasising the need for early detection and regular medical screenings to combat the disease.

“Breast cancer continues to affect thousands of women and families across Ghana, and many cases are detected too late. With early detection and timely care, lives can be saved,” she said.

Ms. Appoh urged women to perform regular self-examinations and encouraged families and communities to support survivors and those battling cancer.

She also called on the government, civil society, and the media to intensify education and expand access to affordable healthcare.

Commending the Ghana Health Service for its upcoming Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign from October 7 to 11, she noted that the initiative, targeting 2.4 million girls aged 9 to 14, is a major step toward eliminating cervical cancer in line with the World Health Organization’s global strategy.

She concluded by urging adolescent girls to take advantage of the vaccination, describing it as safe, effective, and essential for protecting their future health.

Tima Kumkum, Top Choco embark on breast cancer awareness campaign in SHSs https://www.adomonline.com/tima-kumkum-top-choco-embark-on-breast-cancer-awareness-campaign-in-shss/ Tue, 18 Oct 2022 14:14:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2173112 Top Choco and Adom TV presenter, Cynthia Tima Yeboah, aka Tima Kumkum, have embarked on a breast cancer sensitisation programme in two Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Accra.

The beneficiary schools were Dansoman-based St Magaret Mary SHS and La Presbyterian SHS.

The awareness, which adds up to the numerous annual campaign on the deadly disease in October, forms part of Top Choco’s Social Corporate Social Responsibility.

A nurse, who was with the team, took the students through the self-examination method which is the first and easiest way a person can detect a change in his or her breast.

She urged regular self-examinations which she noted will help individuals, especially women to be familiar with their breasts in order to recognise any change that may occur.

Breast cancer awareness: 5 reasons you must massage your breasts https://www.adomonline.com/breast-cancer-awareness-5-reasons-you-must-massage-your-breasts/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 09:45:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170303 Breast massage is not only limited to sexual stimulation but one’s overall well-being.

Breast massage is any form of intentional self-touch to your breast.

This can take the form of kneading, rubbing, holding, or stroking — whatever feels good for you.

Breast massage not only feels amazing but can have many physical health benefits.

If you do it for long enough (15 to 20 minutes), it also releases a bunch of hormones such as oxytocin and prolactin, which can make you feel relaxed, connected and calm.

Read on to know what happens during a breast massage and how it can potentially improve your breast health.

  • Helps prevent cancer

Malignant cells can often form a knot in your breast leading to lumps. When external pressure is applied during the early stages of this knot formation, it can force the cells to go back to their original form. This can help reduce the risk of cancer.

  • Better sexual stimulation

Once you start massaging your breasts, you also increase their sensitivity. This is simply because massaging makes you more aware of touch and how it can positively affect your brain. This can often lead to better orgasms.

  • Firmer, tighter breasts

If you are struggling with sagging breasts, massaging can do the trick for you. This can help tone up the tissues in your breast and lead to firmer breasts.

  • Anti-ageing effects

Once you are internally happy due to the secretion of hormones such as oxytocin, prolactin and estrogen, it can directly lead to anti-ageing effects.

These three hormones are powerful in their anti-ageing properties and hence, make you look and feel younger.

  • Can enlarge them

Breast massage can help increase blood circulation in this fat-storing tissue. Due to massage, a breast enlarging hormone, prolactin, is also secreted.

You can opt for either an essential oil like lavender for this massage or even warm coconut oil can lead to a change in size.
