The case stemmed from an incident involving Justice Noah Adade, who discovered that his personal information was being used to identify the driver after requesting a ride.

When the vehicle arrived, it was driven by Adade’s employee, Peter Walker, who confessed to stealing his identity and registering as a driver on the Bolt app.

The court found Bolt Holdings OU negligent, citing violations of the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), and ordered the payment of GH₵1.9 million in damages.

In response, Bolt issued a statement on Friday, clarifying that the identity theft did not occur within its platform or due to any breach of its systems.

“While we respectfully acknowledge the Court’s ruling, our legal team has reviewed the decision and intends to appeal. We are confident that an appeal process will provide a more accurate outcome,” the statement read.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the privacy and security of user data and assured that it would work with stakeholders and regulatory authorities to improve safety measures on the platform as it proceeds with the appeal.

Ghanaians react to new ‘Digital Transport Fee’ for Uber and Bolt https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaians-react-to-new-digital-transport-fee-for-uber-and-bolt/ Tue, 04 Apr 2023 20:13:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2236193 Ghanaians are up in arms on social media with ride-hailing applications over a development which is affecting their cost of using the services.

Over the past two days, various timelines have been awash with screenshots of receipts showing a new charge on some of the applications.

According to some users who patronise Bolt and Uber, the billing started on April 1 and was accompanied by a message.

“Effective 1st April 2023, we have introduced a new fee called the Digital Transport Fee (DTF) which will apply to all rides in Ghana,” Uber Ghana sent to riders.

The company explained that “this fee will be charged on all completed trips, and it will be set a
¢1 per trip.”

Bolt Ghana, however, described the new charge as a flat-rate booking fee “to improve your app and ride experience.

In response to a Twitter user’s inquiry, Bolt Ghana explained that the charge forms part of new regulations instituted by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authorities (DVLA).

In 2019, the DVLA introduced a GH¢60 annual fee for ride-hailing platforms in Ghana. Ride-hailing cars will also undergo roadworthy tests every six months.

This, according to the Authority, was in line with new guidelines introduced by the Transport Ministry, National Road Safety Commission, and Police MTTD.

But it is unclear whether it has anything to do with this new digital transportation fee four years on.

The DVLA is yet to publicly announce the changes in charges.

But social media users are lamenting over the development amid an economic hardship experienced by Ghanaians.

Lady ‘falls in love’ with Bolt driver [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/lady-falls-in-love-with-bolt-driver-video/ Wed, 29 Sep 2021 09:56:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2021538 An unmarried Nigerian lady is thanking her stars for deciding to order an online-hailing ride as she hints at finding her ‘missing rib’.

The lady, who shared her excitement with netizens, revealed that her rider arrived rocking the same outfit as herself.

They were both in an outfit made from Kente fabric and black trousers, a sign that the man could be more than just her driver for the day.

Sharing the video, she noted that she feels excited that he’s not married, so she’s safe.

“Guys I ordered bolt and as I got to the driver, I noticed we wore the same cloth. What does this mean? Like seriously thank God he is not married so I’m safe,” she said.

The rider could also not hide his excitement as he watches the ‘drama queen’ take videos of him.

Gatlin beats Bolt in 100m final https://www.adomonline.com/gatlin-beats-bolt-100m-final/ Mon, 07 Aug 2017 06:01:00 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=366361 Justin Gatlin stunned the world to claim the 100m World Championship title and leave Usain Bolt trailing in third place in his final individual race before retirement.
Despite a low-key season, Bolt was expected to claim a fourth 100m World Championship title but instead was left with a bronze medal, that will sit alongside his 2011 disqualification in Daegu rather than the jaw-dropping 9.58 world record of his 2009 success.
Instead it was the controversial Gatlin, twice banned for doping offences, who claimed a second World Championship title, 12 years after his only other 100m World Championship gold in Helsinki to go with his 2004 Olympic title.

Dopers must stop or Athletics will die – Bolt https://www.adomonline.com/dopers-must-stop-athletics-will-die-bolt/ Thu, 03 Aug 2017 06:02:08 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=357091 Usain Bolt says athletes who dope must “stop or the sport will die” as he prepares to race for the final time in his illustrious career.
Bolt, an eight-time Olympic champion and icon of world sport, will retire after this month’s World Championships.
The Jamaican, 30, will run in the 100m and 4x100m at the Worlds, which begin in London on Friday.
“Hopefully athletes will see what’s going on and what they need to do to help the sport move forward,” he said.
Referring to the McLaren report, which uncovered evidence of a Russian state-sponsored doping programme, he added: “Personally I think we were at rock bottom. After the scandal on Russia I don’t think it gets any worse than that.
“Over the years we’re doing a better job, it’s getting clean and we’re catching up to a lot of athletes. There’s an understanding that if you cheat you will get caught. Over time the sport will get better.
“I said a couple of years ago it had to get really bad, when there’s nowhere else to go but up. Doping is always a bad thing and it’s never pleasant because you put in the hard work and the sport starts going forward and then you have other guys bringing it back, it’s hard.
“It’s going in the right direction so hopefully it will continue in that direction.”
‘I’m still the fastest’
The men’s World 100m final is on Saturday, 5 August, while the men’s 4x100m relay race – which will mark the end of Bolt’s career – is on the following Saturday.
Bolt has won 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold at the past three Olympic Games – Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
However, his unprecedented ‘triple triple’ of nine gold medals was downgraded to eight after Jamaican team-mate Nesta Carter, who was part of the quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing, tested positive for a banned substance. Carter has appealed against the decision.
