Sarah Nyarko shines bright: Named Best Player at WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup https://www.adomonline.com/sarah-nyarko-shines-bright-named-best-player-at-wafu-b-u-20-girls-cup/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 09:12:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2599161 Black Princesses midfielder Sarah Nyarko has been named the Overall Best Player at the WAFU B U20 Girls Cup held in Benin.

The Dreamz Ladies playmaker delivered a stellar performance throughout the tournament, scoring two goals and providing an assist in Ghana’s four matches.

Despite her individual brilliance, Ghana’s U-20 women’s team were unable to retain their title, finishing as runners-up after a narrow defeat to Nigeria’s Falconets in the final.

Nyarko succeeds Stella Nyamekye, who won the maiden edition of the award in Kumasi.

The tournament also gave head coach Charles Sampson a key opportunity to evaluate his squad and make tactical adjustments ahead of Ghana’s upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Ghana came into the fixture on the back of a 2-0 win over Benin in the early hours of Monday.

Head coach for the side, Charles Sampson, made three changes to the starting lineup, with Theresa Darko, Mary Amponsah, and Fatima Fuseini all coming into the starting lineup.

Nigeria dominated the game and finished the first half two goals up, with Janet Akeremkowei scoring a free kick in the 15th minute, and Alaba Olabiyi adding the second in the 23rd minute.

Ghana came close to scoring with efforts from Mary Amponsah, Linda Owusu, and Sarah Nyarko, but were unable to beat the Nigerian goalkeeper.

The Falconets scored a third in the closing stage to seal the win and claim a double over Ghana, having already beaten them in their first encounter in the competition.

Head coach Charles Sampson views this as a valuable learning experience, allowing him to assess his team ahead of future assignments.

The Black Princesses end their tournament campaign, finishing second. They won two games, both against Benin, while losing two against Nigeria.

WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup: Black Princesses beaten by Nigeria https://www.adomonline.com/wafu-b-u-20-girls-cup-black-princesses-beaten-by-nigeria/ Sat, 08 Nov 2025 09:38:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2597733 The Black Princesses of Ghana fell to their first defeat in the ongoing WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Championship, losing 3-1 to Nigeria’s Falconets on Saturday.

Ghana had begun their campaign on a bright note with a 2-0 win over host nation Benin, but were undone by Nigeria’s clinical finishing in their second group game.

Janet Seimeyeha led the charge for the Falconets with a brace, while Chiamaka Favour added a late third to secure victory. Sarah Nyarko netted Ghana’s only goal, her second of the tournament.

Seimeyeha opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute after a foul inside the box, before doubling Nigeria’s advantage with a deft chip over the goalkeeper just before halftime.

Nyarko offered Ghana a lifeline shortly after the restart, pouncing on a rebound in the 49th minute after her teammate’s effort came off the crossbar.

But despite their improved second-half display, the Princesses were punished again late on, as Chiamaka headed home from a corner in the 88th minute to wrap up the win.

Ghana will look to bounce back when they face Benin on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 10:00 GMT.

Kofi Adams assures payment of outstanding bonuses to Black Starlets, Princesses, and Queens https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-adams-assures-payment-of-outstanding-bonuses-to-black-starlets-princesses-and-queens/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 05:36:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588104 Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured that all outstanding per diems and winning bonuses owed to the Black Starlets, Black Princesses, and Black Queens will be settled soon.

The Black Starlets are yet to receive their entitlements following their impressive run at the recently concluded WAFU B U-17 Championship in Ivory Coast, where they finished as runners-up.

Similarly, the Black Princesses, who are in the thick of qualifying matches for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, are awaiting payments despite progressing to the next stage of the qualifiers after eliminating Tunisia.

The Black Queens, on the other hand, earned a commendable third-place finish at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, their first podium finish at the continental tournament since 2018.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mr Adams, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, admitted that the Ministry owes the three national teams but assured that efforts are underway to clear all outstanding debts.

“It is not as if we had the money there, and we decided not to pay the Black Starlets during the WAFU B tournament. Per diems for the Black Starlets will be paid. Not only them alone, but the Black Princesses as well,” Adams said.

“I have gotten the approval, but when the money hits the Ministry’s account, we will pay them. We also have to pay the Black Queens some arrears, and so we are all doing our best to clear all these arrears,” he added.

The Black Princesses are firmly focused on securing a spot at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a resounding 6-0 aggregate victory over Tunisia in the qualifiers. Ghana defeated the North Africans 2-0 in the first leg and sealed the tie with a 4-0 win in the return fixture.

Speaking after the match, Coach Charles Sampson stressed the importance of taking the campaign one step at a time.

“Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup, but our intention is to go step by step. Now that we are done with Tunisia, our next focus turns to the next match against South Africa,” he said.

Sampson revealed he has already studied the South African team, who opened their campaign with a 5-0 win over Eswatini. Confident in his squad’s ability, he added:

“I have already watched them in the first leg against Eswatini, where they scored five goals. We are up to the task; our aim is to go to the World Cup, so any opponent we get, we will study them and work on how we can outweigh them.”

Ghana will meet South Africa in the next round of qualifiers, scheduled for early next year.

FIFA U20 WWCQ: Black Princesses cruise past Tunisia to reach third round https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-u20-wwcq-black-princesses-cruise-past-tunisia-to-reach-third-round/ Sun, 28 Sep 2025 19:35:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583340 The Black Princesses of Ghana booked their place in the next stage of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers with a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory over Tunisia.

In the return leg played on Sunday afternoon, Mercy Attobrah opened the scoring in the 37th minute after Ghana had squandered a couple of early opportunities.

Ivy Osei Owusu nearly doubled the lead with a brilliant solo effort, but her strike narrowly missed the target as the Princesses went into halftime with a slim advantage.

Head coach Charles Sampson’s tactical changes after the break paid off immediately. Substitute Agnes Yeboah made an instant impact, scoring with her very first touch in the 46th minute to extend Ghana’s lead.

Despite creating several more chances, the Princesses were unable to add to their tally, with Tunisia’s stubborn defense holding firm.

Nonetheless, the result sealed a 2-0 victory on the day, adding to their first-leg advantage to complete a 4-0 aggregate triumph.

Ghana will now face South Africa in February in the third round of the qualifiers as they continue their bid for a place at the U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Al Ahly striker, who only linked up with the squad in Tunisia, was handed a starting role by head coach Charles Sampson.

Leading the attack alongside Linda Owusu Ansah and Zeinab Haruna, Attobrah wasted no time in making her presence felt, breaking the deadlock inside five minutes to hand Ghana the lead.

Despite creating several chances, the Black Princesses were unable to extend their advantage before halftime, with poor finishing keeping the margin narrow at the break.

Attobrah, however, doubled her tally after the restart, unleashing a superb strike from 20 yards that left the Tunisian goalkeeper helpless.

Ghana nearly added a third when Sarah Nayrko went close from close range, but her effort drifted wide.

In the end, Attobrah’s double proved decisive, sealing an important first-leg victory ahead of the return fixture in Accra on Sunday, September 28.

The Black Princesses, who are seeking an eighth consecutive U-20 Women’s World Cup appearance since their maiden qualification in 2010, will look to finish the job at home.

2024 U-20 WWC: Black Princesses eliminated from tournament https://www.adomonline.com/2024-u-20-wwc-black-princesses-eliminated-from-tournament/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 10:15:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2445773 The Black Princesses have been eliminated from the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following Argentina’s victory on Sunday evening.

Ghana was hoping to secure the final spot available for the best third-placed teams with a win against New Zealand.

However, their chance of qualifying for the next round is over due to the outcome of Argentina’s match against Costa Rica.

Heading into their game, Mexico, Canada, and South Korea had all accumulated four points as third-place teams, while Argentina had only one point.

Argentina managed to score in the first half and held on to win, bringing their total to four points.

This result dashed Ghana’s hopes of advancing from the group stage, marking their seventh consecutive failure to progress to the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Under the guidance of Yussif Basigi, Ghana lost their opening matches against Austria and Japan. A win in their final group game against New Zealand would have given them only three points overall.

The Black Princesses faced New Zealand at 11:00 pm on Sunday.

This elimination continues Ghana’s streak of unsuccessful attempts in the competition since their debut in 2012.

2024 U-20 WWC: We lacked concentration – Yusif Basigi on Black Princesses’ defeat to Japan https://www.adomonline.com/2024-u-20-wwc-we-lacked-concentration-yusif-basigi-on-black-princesses-defeat-to-japan/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 12:00:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2445120 Black Princesses head coach, Yussif Basigi has blamed his team’s 4-1 loss to Japan in the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on lapses in concentration.

Ghana faced a tough challenge in their second Group E match on Thursday night, falling to the Asian side.

After the game, Basigi acknowledged that while the team had a solid game plan, their focus waned at critical moments.

“I will attribute this game to a lack of concentration at a point,” said Basigi after the game.

“I think we mapped up a very strong strategy against them it worked until the 40th minute then [the players] lost focus in the next few minutes we conceded which was not the best.

“Even in the second half, we were able to read exactly what they were going to apply and then we ask [the players] to stay focused and mark them only for them to lose concentration again and unfortunately they had another two goals.”

This defeat follows Ghana’s earlier loss to Austria, marking back-to-back losses in the tournament. The Black Princesses now face a must-win situation in their final group game against New Zealand, as they aim to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Ghana is still striving to make it past the group stage for the first time, despite having qualified for six consecutive tournaments.

Eager to secure their first win of the tournament, the Princesses put up a strong fight but ultimately conceded two goals in each half, marking their second consecutive loss.

Ghana started the match with confidence, holding off Japan for 40 minutes. However, Japan broke the deadlock just before halftime, with Sasai scoring in the 45th minute. Matsukubo added a second goal in stoppage time, capitalizing on an error by Ghanaian goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku.

In the second half, substitutions were made, with Mafia Nyame and Mercy Attobra coming on for Wasiima Mohammed and Mary Amponsah. However, the changes did little to stop Japan, as Bayana extended the lead with a goal from a goalmouth scramble.

Ghana managed to pull one back when Stella Nyamekye converted a penalty in the 83rd minute after being fouled. But Japan quickly responded, with Matsunaga scoring to seal a 4-1 victory.

The result leaves Ghana without a point, following their earlier 2-1 loss to Austria in the opening match.

Coach Yusif Basigi and his team will face New Zealand in their final Group E match on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali.

Despite making six consecutive appearances at the tournament, the Black Princesses are still chasing their first-ever qualification from the group stage.

2024 U-20 WWC: Black Princesses coach confident about chances despite defeat to Austria https://www.adomonline.com/2024-u-20-wwc-black-princesses-coach-confident-about-chances-despite-defeat-to-austria/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 11:21:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2443250 Black Princesses coach, Yussif Basigi remains optimistic about his team’s chances in their upcoming group match against Japan, despite their 2-1 loss to Austria in the opening game of the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup on Monday.

Reflecting on the match, he noted the team’s slow start but highlighted their improved performance in the second half, where they dominated play but failed to convert key scoring opportunities.

“We started the game slowly, but towards the end of the first half, we began to find our rhythm. In the second half, we dominated play even though we were a goal down. “Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize on our goal-scoring chances. This is an area we need to refine to stay competitive” Basigi remarked after the match.

He praised the second-half performance but acknowledged that a stronger start could have changed the outcome.

“If we had begun the game the way we played in the second half, it would have been a different story. But we started slowly,” he added.

Despite the pressure to perform, Basigi remains motivated and focused on improving the team’s performance in the upcoming matches.

With a talented squad and experience from previous international friendlies, the Black Princesses are determined to bounce back strongly.

“There’s definitely some pressure, especially since a win or draw against Austria would have boosted our morale. Now, we have no choice but to give our all in the remaining two games,” Basigi said.

Ghana will face Japan in their second Group E match on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

The Black Princesses are eager to advance beyond the group stage for the first time, despite having made six consecutive appearances at the tournament.

Hannah Fankhauster opened the scoring for Austria in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a well-executed team play. Laura Spinn delivered a low cross from the right flank, which Valentina Maedl cleverly let pass through her legs, allowing Fankhauster to fire the ball into the net.

Austria’s goalkeeper, Mariella El Sherif, showcased her impressive reflexes by making a crucial save against Stella Nyamekye, keeping Austria in the lead. Despite Ghana’s relentless efforts to equalize, the World Cup debutants managed to maintain their narrow advantage until halftime.

In the second half, Ghana made strategic substitutions, bringing on Mafia Nyame and Beline Nyarkoh for Salamatu Abdulai and Asana Mohammed. Ghana captain Stella Nyamekye came close to scoring with a long-range shot that struck the post in the 52nd minute.

Austria continued to press for a second goal but was denied by a solid block from Afi Amenyeku. Tracey Twum had a chance to equalize for Ghana but headed wide from close range following a precise cross from Comfort Yeboah. Nyamekye almost scored a spectacular goal, but her effort was thwarted by the crossbar.

The match’s second goal came unexpectedly when Asana Alhassan handled the ball in the box, resulting in a penalty. Nicole Ojukwu calmly converted the spot-kick, extending Austria’s lead to 2-0.

Ghana’s Stella Nyamekye managed to pull one back in the 90th minute, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, as the match ended 2-1 in Austria’s favour.

U-20 WWC: We are ready for tournament – Black Princesses coach Yussif Basigi https://www.adomonline.com/u-20-wwc-we-are-ready-for-tournament-black-princesses-coach-yussif-basigi/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2440349 Black Princesses coach Yussif Basigi is confident about his team’s prospects as they prepare for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Currently training in Colombia, Ghana’s U-20 women’s national team has played two friendly matches in preparation for the tournament.

They first drew 0-0 with Mexico and then played to a 2-2 draw against South Korea on Tuesday evening.

Basigi expressed optimism about the team’s progress, noting, “Our performance has definitely improved since the first game. Against Mexico, there was noticeable tension, but the team played much better against South Korea. Despite the penalty against us, which is part of the game, the team held its own well.”

He acknowledged concerns about conceding two penalties but sees it as a learning opportunity.

“It’s concerning to give away two penalties, but it helps us understand what to expect in the tournament. Referees often protect players, and minor infractions can result in penalties, so we need to be cautious.”

Basigi is reassured by the team’s development and feels ready for the upcoming World Cup.

“We’ve identified the key aspects we needed to address, and the team has shown promise. We are hopeful and prepared for the challenges ahead.”

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Colombia from August 31 to September 22, 2024.

Ghana’s first match is against Austria on September 2, with additional group-stage games against New Zealand and Japan.

Meanwhile, Stella Nyamekye has been named as the new captain for the team.

The team, which will be making its seventh consecutive appearance in the tournament, has failed to advance beyond the group stage in each of the previous six editions.

The Black Princesses have been drawn into Group E alongside New Zealand, Japan, and Austria, and will be looking to break their curse at the World Cup.

Despite their previous performances, which have seen them win only three of their 12 matches, with their best finish being a third-place finish in the group stage in 2018, Okraku is confident that the team can do better.

“We’ve not gone beyond the group stages in the past six times we’ve been to the World Cup,” Okraku said.

“This year, our vision is clear – we want to do better than our previous performances. We believe that the technical team is well on course to deliver, and we’ve given the team all the support they need.”

The Black Princesses will move to Accra today to complete their preparations ahead of the tournament.

They will open their campaign against Austria on September 2, before taking on Japan and New Zealand.

U-20 WWC: We will do everything to qualify from group stage – Black Princesses coach Yusif Basigi https://www.adomonline.com/u-20-wwc-we-will-do-everything-to-qualify-from-group-stage-black-princesses-coach-yusif-basigi/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 11:26:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2424792 Black Princesses coach, Yussif Basigi, has expressed his commitment to ensuring the team progresses beyond the group stage in the upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana’s U-20 women’s national team is preparing for its seventh consecutive appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Despite their consistent participation, the team has never advanced past the first round. Their best performance was in 2012 when they were eliminated in the group stage despite earning six points.

Basigi, who coached the team in the 2018 edition where they finished third in their group, reflected on the challenges they faced at that time.

“In my case, it was unfortunate the time we went for the World Cup in 2018; that was the time of the expose – the Normalisation Committee period but things were not normalised. I wouldn’t say that is an excuse though,” he said during the team’s Media Day at the Cape Coast Stadium on Monday, July 22.

The team has been training in Cape Coast for the past three weeks in preparation for the tournament. Basigi emphasized their determination to succeed this time around.

“This time, we are motivated to go again and make a mark because we are all looking forward to breaking that jinx. We have made the girls aware just as we the technical staff are aware,” he continued.

“We don’t need anybody to task us to do that job. We know how difficult it is. It’s a  herculean task but we will do all that we can to go beyond the group stage before we think of any other thing.”

With the expansion of the tournament to 24 teams from 16, Basigi is hopeful this will be the year Ghana finally advances beyond the first round.

The U-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Colombia later this year, with Ghana placed in Group E alongside Austria, New Zealand, and Japan.

Ghana will face rivals Nigeria in the final of the tournament on Saturday at the Baba Yara Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 18:30GMT.

The Black Princesses sealed a place in the final after a 3-1 comeback win over Burkina Faso. Nigeria, however, recorded a 3-0 win over Benin.

Ahead of the final, Basigi says the Princesses are determined to make history and is confident of winning the ultimate.

“Ghanaians should have faith in this Black Princesses team. They are coachable and I have been satisfied with their performance,” he told Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“We are playing Nigeria who have experience. They have good players who have played in World Cup but we are going to match them and I am convinced we will lift the trophy.

“The players are highly motivated ahead of the final. GFA boss, Kurt Okraku, spoke to the team before the start of the tournament and what they were told still rings in their minds. I am sure they want to write their names in the history books.

“Getting to the final and winning the trophy is a different thing but we want to win the maiden edition of the tournament. The body language of the players indicates that they are ready for the final against Nigeria,” he added.

Ghana’s campaign in Costa Rica came to a bitter end after a 4-1 loss to the Netherlands in the final group game.

It came after defeats to the United States and Japan as they finished bottom of Group D with zero points and scored one from three games.

Ghana failed to make it out of the group stages in all six editions of the World Cup they have played since their debut in 2010.

After the final game, Fokuo who revealed that plans to progress to the next stage had failed, believes the team will work hard to compete in the next edition.

“This is the sixth time we have not been able to qualify from the group stage and it is very worrying,” he said as quoted by the Ghana FA.

“When we were coming to this competition for the sixth time, we decided to make sure that we qualify from the group stage for the first time and later progress from the quarter-final but it is unfortunate we lost all three matches and are out of the competition.”

He also added that the team will return to Ghana and turn attention to the next edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

‘’We did our preparations and worked hard towards the competition but things didn’t go as planned.

‘’We will work hard and try again in the next edition and hopefully, the team will make it past the group stage for the first time.”
