Guided by the experience in which all of Ghana’s boxers failed in two separate Olympic qualification competitions in Senegal and Italy, the GBF wants to feature boxers who are capable of qualifying for the Olympic Games as the road has not been smooth, but very tough.

All 12 boxers who fought for Ghana in the Olympic Games qualification round in Senegal last September were eliminated.

The Black Bombers tried again at the second Olympic qualifiers in Italy earlier in March, but none of them qualified.

The Ghanaian delegation will have the last chance to secure their tickets to compete in the Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok.

Abu Kamoko, who won a silver medal at the African Games has not been able to impress the boxing authorities.

Also known as Ambitious Tilapia, he caught the attention of Ghanaians when he reached the final of the 86kg cruiserweight division at the 2023 African Games but lost to Algerian opponent Kanouni Ousama in the finals and settled for silver.

According to the GBF, he must up his game to be able to represent the nation at a high level, as he looked very raw at the African Games.

However, Abu Kamoko who trains at the Bronx Gym feels because he got a silver at the African Games he must go to Thailand.

Also, not going to Thailand is Mohammed Aryeetey who won gold at the African Games.

Meanwhile, the GBF is planning to take the reserves in the Black Bombers to a tournament in New Zealand.

While previously hinting at a possible shift in international allegiance towards the United Kingdom, Freezy Macbones has committed to competing in the forthcoming Africa qualifiers set to transpire next month in Dakar, Senegal. The goal of this venture is to secure a position for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.

Announcing his decision via his official Twitter handle, the boxer conveyed his enthusiasm for contributing to Ghana’s boxing aspirations in the context of the Olympics. He conveyed his dedicated preparations to transform his ambition of representing his homeland into a tangible reality.

In his statement, Freezy Macbones declared, “I have received the call to represent my nation, Ghana, at the forthcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. This journey will commence post the African qualification rounds slated for next month in Dakar, Senegal. My current intense training regimen is geared towards triumphing in these qualifiers and securing the coveted Gold next year.”

Expressing his gratitude for the remarkable opportunity, the boxer regarded the chance to participate in the world’s foremost sporting event as a fulfilment of his cherished aspirations. Freezy Macbones acknowledged his responsibility to honor his country, family, and friends, vowing to join the ranks of Ghana’s Black Bombers to actualize this dream.

In a heartfelt note, he extended appreciation for the encouragement he has received thus far and expressed his hope for continued support as his journey advances. His message resonated with determination: “Let’s Go! See you guys again soon!”

The boxer garnered nationwide recognition following his victory over Darryl Sharp at London’s Copper Boxing Arena in April. Amid the Joe Joyce vs. Zhilei Zhang main event, he participated in a preliminary bout, clinching victory by unanimous decision from the judges.

He said the Ministry is giving equitable attention to all sports, which is the desire of the president, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, a keen sports lover.

He was speaking to members of the Black Bombers, the national boxing team who expressed their concerns and challenges to him at the Trust Sports Emporium, where they are preparing for the Olympic Games that will take place in Tokyo, Japan from July 28 to August 8, 2021.

Mr Ussif assured all the qualified athletes and federations of the government’s support and appreciable rewards if they win medals for the nation.

He said that things must be done differently this time, to achieve the much-needed results, and his administration will ensure adequate preparations and appreciable motivation.

According to him, he will meet all the qualified federations and see how well everyone will be motivated to achieve results and win medals for the nation at the Olympic Games.

He said the Ministry of Youth and Sports is coming up with modalities for rewarding national athletes, and everyone who performs well will be honoured.
