Prof Collins, a respected scholar of African popular music and a key figure in documenting and promoting Ghanaian highlife, had suggested in an interview that Bisa KDei may have copied the highlife guitar pattern of Brother Brother from an old record.

“What Bisa KDei did in Brother Brother was that he picked the typical guitar band sample. I don’t even know which band he got this from, but it was very distinctive. He didn’t get a guitarist to play it. He just looped it and used it occasionally,” he claimed.

Reacting to the comment, Bisa KDei took to his Instagram story to stress that he never samples in his work and played the guitars himself.

“The fact that I got it so perfect doesn’t mean I copied it. I never sample. None of my songs is sampled because I understand originality very well. I also produce and play the guitar. The guitars in Mansa and Brother Brother I played myself, and I understand highlife, so I play according to flow. Someone should tell the professor to do proper research next time. lol,” he wrote.

Prof Collins is widely recognised for his extensive research on Ghanaian music, having worked with highlife greats such as Ebo Taylor, Koo Nimo, and Fela Kuti, and for setting up the Bokoor African Popular Music Archives Foundation.

Bisa KDei is one of Ghana’s leading contemporary highlife musicians, known for blending authentic highlife rhythms with modern production. His catalogue includes songs such as Mansa, Baba, Asew, Jwe, and Metanfo.

Apart from singing, Bisa KDei is also an instrumentalist and music producer.

In an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Bisa Kdei said: “I wasn’t scared. I am protecting my wife from social media. I don’t want people to come and say anything about my marriage. That is how I like it.

“My wedding was a coded affair. I did it in January. I didn’t want anybody to hear about it. Somebody leaked the video. There were soldiers and a lot of people at the ceremony,” he explained on Hitz FM.

He further emphasized his point by sharing an experience at one of President Akufo-Addo’s daughter’s wedding, where despite measures to prevent photography, someone still managed to take and share pictures on social media.

Bisa Kdei also recounted how news of his mother’s passing surfaced on social media without him announcing it, highlighting his desire for privacy.

Speaking in an interview with Accra FM, Bisa Kdei bemoaned the promotion of foreign music during the December in GH period.

“During recent Year of Return events, I don’t think we use them well enough for ourselves. There are instances where foreigners come to experience Ghanaian music but end up listening to other genres.

We know a lot of people came to Ghana during the Year of Return, but a lot of shows were not playing Ghanaian songs but promoting other genres,” he said.

He also noted that some promoters have hindered the rise of Ghanaian music, especially at the global level, due to their negative approach towards the music industry.

According to Bisa Kdei, it is very wrong to say Ghanaian music is not good enough while downplaying the efforts of the musicians, who put a lot of handwork into the craft.

Bisa Kdei also stated that the badmouthing of some promoters has also limited the growth of our music, especially with investors not willing to invest in the industry.

“You would have some promoters say no Ghanaian artiste can’t sell the O2 Arena, and they keep downplaying the efforts of the Ghanaian artistes.

“Let’s say good things so that it will encourage others to do their best. Nobody should say our music is not that good because some other artistes come to Ghana and even learn,” he said.

Bisa Kdei is currently promoting his heartfelt single “Medaase” which is gradually making waves across the country.

The event was spectacle, with performances from top artistes including Gyakie, S3fa, and Sista Afia.

After being opportuned to listen to Sarkodie’s Try Me, a diss song and reply to Yvonne Nelson, Bisa opined that his colleague’s song is fire, adding that it has earwormed its way into his head.

What he did not see coming was the insults and backlash from netizens who advised him to focus on his music and desist from inserting himself into matters that do not concern him.

Bisa is quoted to have responded that “there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging how good a song is. Their problem is between them. I have my own issues too. Don’t tag everything as same.”

However, his reply further invited drags as netizens reminded him of a similar scandal he was involved in with artiste Becca and how that narrative was unfair to his brand.

A seemingly irate Bisa Kdei warned netizens to desist from dragging Becca’s name into the mud while they focus on their own lives.

The ‘Mansa’ hit maker also revealed that he was not the only musician involved in an accident but he was with female singer Sista Afia.

According to Bisa Kdei, he strongly believes that had it not been for prayers he and his team offered to God that moment, they would have been dead long ago. 

Sharing his ordeal on Accra-based Hitz FM with Dr Pounds monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Bisa Kdei recounted “we were coming back from Aburi and something was telling me that we should pray repeatedly with my boys. So I told them that I feel like something is telling us to pray so we parked on the roadside. By then I had signed Sista Afia few days earlier. Sista Afia was even part of the team.

“So we parked and we all held our hands and prayed, 15 minutes later we crashed with two cars. It was bad, and at that time, I thought I had lost my voice. All of us had our necks locked but I stood up like a robot and went to check on my boys; everybody was okay but the cars were all damaged. It was crazy, Bisa Kdei revealed.  

The one-off listening party held at the Cafe Koko in Camden Town, London was attended by top UK music industry players including Eddie Khadi, Adesope, Nomanoms, and DJ Paek.

Others were representatives from Sony Music, Universal Records, YouTube, Nikita, Apple Music, Spotify, Imuller, Blacklist, Guap Magazine and the Grammy Academy.

The listening party allowed music fans to hear the album, which saw Bisa Kdei collaborate with some of the best musicians on the African continent, including Stonebwoy, Kidi, Teni, Camidoh, Sefa, and football star Memphis Depay.

During the listening party, the multi-award-winning Highlife musician revealed that he had been working on this project for over three years and was overjoyed to finally release it.

“This music project was monumental, and I am grateful to all artistes who featured on it and made it a reality. I wanted fans to explore the versatile aspect of my craft, and I am already thrilled with the feedback,” he said.

Bisa Kdei also announced plans to stage an album tour around the world with his musical band in his quest to grow Highlife music.

Bisa Kdei has already released the “Next Chapter” video off the “Original” album, which addresses issues pertaining to early career setbacks and success chalked up in his 10-year music reign.

The “Original” album since its release a few days ago has racked up impressive streaming numbers, as it was the third-most streamed album on Audiomack earlier this week.

Sitting with Entertainment Journalist Kwame Dadzie for a YouTube interview posted on Monday, January 16, 2023, the popular musician said “it’s the best,” to be an independent artiste compared to signing to a record label.

“It’s my opinion but I think,” he explained. “You can have a record deal, maybe you can have a distribution deal, it depends on the contract, just don’t sell yourself away,” Bisa advised. 

Explaining what it means to sell oneself away, the respected songwriter said: “The thing is that you can sell your whole catalogue to a record label and you’re [ruined].”

Kwame wondered if it is always bad to sell ones catalogue to a record company regardless of how lucrative the deal offered may be.

Bisa Kdei insinuated that US$2 million is not enough for an artiste to hand over their catalogue to a record company but granted that it will be a mouthwatering offer for some music acts, nonetheless.

“I’m not going to lie to you, I’ve had offers but I turned them down because I don’t want to give my catalogue away,” he revealed but without stating the amount involved. “It’s very important as a musician that you keep that. That’s why I said it’s the best [to be an independent artiste].”

Born Ronald Kwaku Dei Appiah, he asserted this is what is meant by the popular showbiz phrase ‘selling one’s soul to the devil’.

“Because you sell your whole catalogue and at the end of the day, you’re making nothing out of it and the record label is taking all the money,” he added. 

Noting “it all depends on the kind of contract,” an artiste is given, the serial hitmaker underscored the importance of “lawyers and you need intellectual people around you who will check these kind of things for you.”

Concerning the labels that reached out to him, he revealed they are “very big record labels,” from the international world. 

“I’m not saying record labels are bad, they are good. It [only] depends on the kind of deal they are bringing,” the 36-year-old clarified. 

Kwame Dadzie asked what he thought of a US$200 million deal.

The ‘Mansa’ hitmaker answered by citing the Ghanaian proverb that teaches: “Eating [well] regularly is better than eating all at once.”

The award-winning Ghanaian singer, songwriter and record producer’s fourth album, ‘Original’, is slated for release on Friday, January 20, 2023. 

The award winning artiste expressed great excitement considering how far he has come in the industry.

“It is a great feeling to stage this concert in the UK as I celebrate 10 years of doing music, I want to urge my fans to come out in their numbers to support me,” he said.

Bisa appreciated his fans for their support saying “I appreciate my fans who played a vital role in my success story as a musician. The November concert will be remembered dearly.”

The Odo Carpenter hit maker further indicated that the concert will be held in the UK and Ghana respectively.

“I will organize another concert in Ghana after that of the UK to celebrate my success,” Bisa noted.

The UK concert is scheduled to come off in London, Indigo at The O2, on November 18, 2022.

This, he stated in an interview with Graphic Showbiz.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Adom TV’s Sister Sandy, Bisa Kdei disclosed he is very aware of the accusations, but had no time to react because they were not as important as his music.

He has, however, debunked the rumours, insisting that he rose into the limelight as a result of his ‘hustle’.

Speaking on why his associates could cook up such a story, Bisa said it was just a ploy to bring him down, after a minor fallout.

He disclosed that such naysayers are persons who came to him for help, but were not patient enough for the appointed time when he could hold their hands to the top of their music career.

“It is not exactly greed or envy, it is just life, it’s bound to happen. You need these kinds of things to succeed in life. If you don’t get those types of people, you will never succeed [You need this experience]”.

There have been rumours recently suggesting that the highlife musician may have preferences for people of his sex.

The rumour doesn’t seem to sit well with the musician because he has battled so many cyber bullies.

When one blogger posted an allegation from Snapchat, claiming Bisa Kdei was gay, the musician said nothing but challenged him and those who think like him to find out the truth by giving him their sisters.

According to him, he believes there has been a deliberate attempt by some industry players to ignore submissions of Bisa Kdei’s works for the VGMAs over the past two years.

In 2018, 10, we submitted two songs on the Highlife Konnect album… and this year too I did the same and it wasn’t nominated as well, he told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.

He also touched on how the board failed to nominate Bisa Kdei’s ‘Asew’ song that got featured on Netflix and his ‘Sika’ song that features singer Gyakie.

And you know how big the ‘Asew’ song was… If I do so and you don’t nominate then what are you telling me? No disrespect to anyone though, he added.

Speaking on the 2021 VGMA Highlife Song of the Year category, Booza Kay, said the board goofed by nominating Dada Hafco’s Playboy that featured Akwaboah as part of the songs that battled out in the category.

I never heard of Dada Hafco’s song, the ‘Playboy’ song… his song can’t be compared to the ‘Sika’ song. Playboy shouldn’t have made it to the list… The ‘Sika’ song can compete with all of the songs that were nominated so why wasn’t Bisa nominated? He quizzed.

While searching for some memories of his life prior to his 35th birthday, Bisa Kdei stated he found his baby picture.

Born to a Ghanaian mother and a Slovakian father, the 11-year-old actress, in an interview with Hitz FM’s Kady Asamoah, disclosed how she got chosen to feature in the Christmas musical film.

In the interview, she also disclosed how featuring in the film had affected her social life positively.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to come to Ghana this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic but she hopes to visit when all is calm as she does every other year with her family.

According to him, he was overly excited about the news, adding that, it’s a big win for Ghana and the entire Black movie fraternity.

I think as an artiste you need to focus on yourself, your music and fans and you don’t have to focus on others waiting for you to achieve a milestone. I am a Ghanaian and I cannot change my identity.

I am selling highlife… the same funeral songs are winning. They try to ask me about highlife and our culture here and I think that’s another reason they chose me because I am selling my culture and the sound is authentic.

We had a couple of emails from the production team and the wife of the director, … she is a huge fan of me and she has been listening to most of my songs,. So when the email came in…they thought my sound was different, Bisa Kdei said.

The musician said he was yet to watch the full movie because he had been occupied with congratulatory messages, adding that, due to the excitement I have to watch it again.

We started working on this since last year. It’s a big win for Ghana. When I was speaking to them, they told me it’s a movie that is dear to their heart. They have been working on it for the past 20 years. It’s a big win for Africa as well because it’s a black thing.

Jingle Jangle is about a toymaker whose apprentice betrays him after stealing all his work.

The once joyful toymaker finds new hope when his bright young granddaughter appears on his doorstep.

The movie released on November 12 features Academy Award (Oscar) winning actor Forest Whitaker, Emmy nominated actress Phylicia Rashād, Emmy Award winner actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key and Madalen Mills. 

In a short video, the emerging musician with a growing fan base in Takoradi, said the highlife star used to charge outrageous prices and felt bossy anytime he approached him for a song feature.

However, the ‘Dane’ musician added that, no one will ever sabotage musician K’dei’s career, hence he should do his homework well and come out with a song.

He said the ‘Brother Brother’ hitmaker is selfish and arrogant, a tag some entertainment critics have also put on him. He has, however, rubbished such allegations.

So Bisa K’dei you said the media is not playing your songs because they have been paid. When you were on top you were arrogant and selfish. When we approached you for a feature, you mentioned outrageous prices like you were hungry.

Meanwhile, musician K’dei in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM has apologised to people working in the media space.

He attributed his mistake to his Personal Assistance, who he said, tweeted that the media is fake without his approval.

Mr Bolton, speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, monitored by Adomonline.com said, the ‘Mansa’ hitmaker went far by saying the media is fake.

According to him, if you issue such a statement, you will rather change the state of mind of the media and might rather pay you through your utterances.

The music producer told Andy Dosty that, the musician should rather consider liaising with media gatekeepers than blame them.

He came to the top so quickly and to maintain that is very difficult. It’s about how you will relate with the media guys, the bloggers others.

If all goes well, he is okay but something little, he falls off. He has to start nurturing good relationship with people.

If I were him, I will retweet an apology, Mr Bolton advised.

In a tweet, the singer said he was aware of an agenda by people who have been paid to bring him down in the Ghanaian music sphere.

His statement generated lots of reactions on social media, where most people bashed him for saying that “the media is fake”.

But Mr Logic, reacting to this on Daybreak Hitz, said Ghanaians don’t have to rain insults on him until he is unable to testify which people are draining his career.

I think the best thing is to get him to give us proof. To insult him means you are naïve, some are calling him stupid, depressed and past, its not important.

If I say the justice system is fake, I should be able to prove. He has to get good rapport with people. If he cannot do it, they should get people on the road to do it for him though he has the right to complain, Mr Logic said.

According to the renowned presenter, he has issues with the musician claiming the media is fake though he has friends in the same space who are keen to support him to the core.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the Love You Die musician said he cannot fathom why the musician is now lambasting the media but had no friction when he was on top of the airwaves.

Andy Dosty, reacting to this said, I think it’s offensive from where I sit. From time, we were playing your songs, even now, I play songs for people and once ‘Mansa’ plays, ‘Brother Brother’ must follow.

How much will someone influence me not to play Bisa K’dei’s songs? He asked on the show.

Additionally, the popular presenter said he would have had no issue if the musician had mentioned names.

What if he has proof? My sword is always double-edged. Why don’t you say some media persons? He has to mention names, he dared him.

Meanwhile, the presenter said he could put himself in the musician’s shoes due to a similar encounter he had with an artiste manager sometime back.

When I was at Peace FM, I met a man who was so much in pain and willing to stop songs of an artiste from being played on airwaves because his artiste ditched him. He was in so much pain.

‘Mansa’ by Bisa Kdei paved way for Victor to exercise his dancing prowess once again as the floor was at the mercy of the lad.

The music hit the soul of composer extraordinaire, Bisa Kdei when he joined him on stage to perform.

With the liveband to boost his performance, Victor was not a disappointment to the judges.
