The situation, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), left scores of commuters and residents stranded.

In a statement, GNFS said a crew was dispatched to the scene in good time and by means of appropriate protection and a ladder ascended the faulty pole.

They managed to seal off the openings in the pole used by the bees with bolts and nuts to make way for the repair works.

Their intervention restored normal human and vehicular traffic on the affected stretch of the road.

According to the leader of the church, Pastor Francis Ofori, the bees stormed into action after some children from the Ateiku community attacked the bees with a catapult and fled the scene.

The scattered bees entered the children’s auditorium of the SDA church which is very close the scene, to retaliate the attack.

According to the information gathered, the children alerted the adults and the parents, and together with their children, run helter-skelter upon seeing the bees.

The deceased, a one-year-old baby, who could not run for her life, became a casualty, and the only person at the receiving end of the bees’ retaliation attack.

The baby, who was sent to the Wasa Ateiku clinic for treatment after the attack, was pronounced dead a few minutes after admission.

Pastor Francis Ofori pleaded with parents to caution children against bees attack which in the long run poses threat to third parties.

Reports suggest that a swarm of bees invaded an examination hall, chasing away the students and invigilators.

In the video posted by Instablog9a, the students could be seen running helter-skelter from the stinging bees.

It is said that one of the students was severely attacked, for which she has been hospitalised.

Church members, who remained in churches around the area before the invasion of the bees, are currently locked up in their auditoriums after witnessing the stinging of persons who stepped out.

A woman, whose shop is on the street, said she had to close her shop and run for cover in one of the churches in the area.

She said, “immediately they hear a sound outside on the streets they attack. They are even entering cars and stinging people. Many people have fled their cars for safety.

“Some people, who were coming from church, had to lay flat on the road and take off their clothes to cover up to avoid getting attacked by the bees.”

A resident, Ebenezer Owuewie, indicated that the bees have always had their nests in a mango tree and the roofs of a house in the area.

He recounted: “The tenants of the house who have lived there for about three years now say they came to meet the bees there. But we don’t know why they are out now. Someone just run to the place we are hiding in the church with all lips swollen.”

The stranded residents said all calls to the assembly member for the area to help them contact relevant agencies to help them have fallen on deaf ears.

The situation has affected passengers on the Afram Plains ferry.

Speaking to Agoo News, the captain of the Ferry, Rockson Kwao, said passengers have been advised not to come out from their vehicles due to the current condition.

According to him, some affected persons have been hospitalised, one is in critical condition and almost died due to the attack by the bees.

The injured persons are currently undergoing treatment in one of the nearby hospitals at Kwahu.

The bizarre incident is said to have occurred at Eldoret in Kenya after the victim hired the services of a witch doctor.

In the photos fast circulating online, the swarm of bees mobbed the right hand of one of the suspects clad in a red t-shirt.

The other, who was shirtless, had the bees around his head and on his bare chest as he holds the stolen items.

Witnesses trooped to the scene and followed them as they return the stolen items to where they had been picked them from.

According to reports, the bees are attacking anyone on sight causing many to abandon their cars and motorbikes.

An elderly man is said to be in critical condition after the swarm of bees attacked him.

A witness, Jonathan Tetteh, said motorists from the Tema Motorway have abandoned their cars for fear of being attacked.

“We suspect the bees came from a tree nearby. Many have abandoned their cars and motorbikes at the Valco roundabout for fear of being attacked,” he added.

The old man, who was attacked by the bees, was lying helpless since no one was ready to risk his life to save him.

He appealed to the police to come to the scene to ensure law and order.

The swarm of bees had built their hive in the tower of a Mosque in the area and were provoked when some children hurled stones into their colony.

In all, six persons, including a two-year-old baby, a pastor, and some residents, who were injured, were rushed to the Assin Fosu St. Francis Xavier Hospital for medical attention.

A witness told the Ghana News Agency that some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and newsmen, who rushed to the scene later, were not spared by the bees.

According to him, the priest at the Church of Christ, was on his way to church when he unknowingly drove into the bees and received severe stings from the insects.

He fell unconscious and crushed his car into a parked taxi nearby whose driver was also escaping from the bees.

The insects went on a stinging spree that resulted in the injury of two persons, including an elderly man.

The situation compelled the police authorities to mount a barrier in front of the police command to prevent unsuspecting commuters from using a stretch of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road where the police command was located.

The Bolgatanga District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Richard Anaba Salifu, who confirmed the incident, intimated that the affected people were subsequently rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital.

One person had so far been discharged while the other person, the elderly man, was currently responding to treatment, he noted.

Chief Supt Salifu said the elderly man had come to the police command in connection with a case involving a family member and while returning home, the bees stung him mercilessly.

The man fell flat on the ground to prevent further attack on him, but the bees continued to sting him.
According to the district police commander, the police authorities quickly called in personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Zoomlion Ghana Limited who managed to bring the situation under control.

Chief Supt Salifu noted that as of now, everything was calm and the district police command had since resumed work after the situation was brought under control.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the bees were attracted to the elderly man because of the perfume he had used.

About bees
Bees belong to the Phylum Arthropoda of Kingdom Animalia, and they take one of the top spots in the world when it comes to population.

The major attractors to bees are scent and colour of the natural environment. Food, flowers, light and other attractors also catch the attention of bees.

What attracts bees more than anything else is scent. Bees look for flowers for pollination and to consume pollen and nectar.

Therefore, they mostly get attracted to sweet, flowery scents.

The bees according to Tain FM’s Nana Kwasi Gyimah have occupied the compound of the school, making it virtually impossible for the teachers and the pupils to attend classes.

He said residents and pupils of the town have been beaten severely by the bees.

The beating, which did not spare the Odikro of the community, Nana Kofi Kyere, also left some of the pupils when the bees pounced on him.

Nana Kofi Kyere told Adom News the bees invade the school every day but it has become very deadly this time around.

Though the Ghana National Fire Service have come to the rescue of the residents and pupils to salvage the situation, Nana Kwasi Gyimah reported on Adom Midday News that their vehicle has been stucked in a mud making it difficult for the fire service team to bring the situation under control.

The Odikro however suggested to the school management to prepare beehives at the outskirts of the town to attract the insects, as an economic venture.
