The Spaniard had his most recent contract extended this summer by an extra 12 months to prevent him leaving on a free transfer, but he was still linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Azpilicueta told Chelsea’s official website: “I am really happy to extend my stay at Chelsea, my home.

“It is almost 10 years since I first arrived and joined the club so I really feel the love and I am really excited for the new project we have in our hands.

“I would like to say thank you to Mr Todd and Mr Behdad for giving me the opportunity to keep my journey at this amazing club and I am really looking forward to continuing our adventure. I am a really proud captain and I hope we can share many good memories together.”

He was believed to be a target for Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez as he continues his rebuild in Catalonia.

Reports suggested that Chelsea were reluctant to do business with Barcelona after they were the side to sign central defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla, and he will now almost certainly stay with Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Chelsea were keen to keep the player after showing strong leadership qualities of the 32-year-old during the time they were operating under sanctions last season.

Under Roman Abramovich’s ownership it was rare for a player over 30 to be offered new deals longer than 12 months.

Azpilicueta is 24 games short of playing 500 games for Chelsea.

Kai Havertz & Cesar Azpilicueta offer to pay Chelsea’s travel costs https://www.adomonline.com/kai-havertz-cesar-azpilicueta-offer-to-pay-chelseas-travel-costs/ Wed, 16 Mar 2022 11:12:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2091720 Chelsea teammates, Kai Havertz and Cesar Azpilicueta have both said they would be happy to foot the bill for Chelsea’s travel to away matches.

The Blues are currently under a fleet of financial sanctions in relation to owner Roman Abramovich, a result of his alleged ties to the Kremlin and president Vladimir Putin amid Russia invasion of Ukraine.

As well as restrictions on transfers, contracts and ticket sales, the Blues are also unable to exceed a travel budget of £20,000 for away matches.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of travelling to face Lille in the Champions League last 16 second leg on Wednesday, Chelsea head coach, Thomas Tuchel suggested that this limit could become problematic in terms of logistics and avoiding injuries.

“It isn’t about luxury and bling-bling,” he said

“This is just a professional level of sports, where we play with two days between matches with our opponent having four days between matches and we arrive with the possibilities of injuries. For that, it is better to arrive with a plan rather than a bus.”

“We try to do it. From my understanding, we have a framework to go and play in Lille with absolutely no excuses.”

“Regarding these organisations, it is already more difficult to arrange things on a professional level, in the best way possible, for the FA Cup. But we will deal with it.”

Speaking after his manager, Havertz revealed he would be willing to pay for the team’s travel for away fixtures.

“I will pay, it is not a problem and it isn’t a big deal,” he said. “To get to the games is the most important thing. There are harder things going on in the world right now, so if we have to take a bus or plane to any away game, I will pay. It is not a problem.

“We are all professional footballers and everyone knows it is a strange situation for the club. We are the players so we have to focus on playing football matches, that is the best we can do.

“The other stuff, the club can sort out by themselves. I can’t speak about it much because we’re all focused on the games and this is the most important thing at the moment.”

According to Mundo Deportivo, club captain Azpilicueta has also offered to pay for travel out of his own pocket.

Chelsea: Azpilicueta reveals mind games in Club World Cup final https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-azpilicueta-reveals-mind-games-in-club-world-cup-final/ Tue, 15 Feb 2022 14:13:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2079846 Cesar Azpilicueta has revealed he tried to take the pressure off Kai Havertz by pretending he was going to take Chelsea’s extra-time penalty in the Club World Cup final win over Palmeiras.

Havertz scored from the spot in the 117th minute to secure victory for Chelsea in Abu Dhabi.

Before Havertz netted the penalty it looked as though Azpilicueta was set to take it as he picked up the ball and stood by the penalty spot.

Palmeiras players crowded around the defender to try to put him off before Azpilicueta handed the ball over to Havertz.

“It was a tactic because I knew how they are,” explained Chelsea captain Azpilicueta.

“I knew they were coming for the penalty taker, so I took the ball.

“Kai knew that he was going to shoot so it was to release the pressure from him. It was a decisive moment and Kai is one of the best penalty takers.

“I waited and listened to everything their players told me, and I think it worked, which is the most important thing.”

Having signed for Chelsea in 2012, Azpilicueta is the first player in the club’s history to win every major honour.

He adds the Club World Cup to the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup and European Super Cup.

“When I arrived in 2012 I couldn’t imagine the journey I would go on,” said the 32-year-old, who is into the final six months of his contract.

“I’m really proud to be the Chelsea captain, leading the club on and off the pitch. This title feels very good because it’s the first time in our history. The club deserves it, the owner deserves it and I’m proud we achieved it.”

Havertz, who also scored the winning goal in last season’s Champions League final against Manchester City, said he was feeling nerves ahead of the penalty.

“It’s amazing. After champions of Europe, we are now champions of the world. It sounds better.

“I was nervous [taking the penalty], I have to be honest. It’s a big penalty. It’s just crazy. It was good I kept the nerves. I am very happy.

“I was the third penalty taker but I was the only one left on the pitch. My teammates gave me trust. I dreamed always as a kid of this. This is an amazing feeling for me.”
